00:00by now everyone knows that starlink can
00:02give you satellite internet anywhere but
00:04the box I'm holding is completely
00:06different this is starlink mini it is a
00:08self-contained tiny device that can give
00:11you that same internet anywhere you go
00:13you could even power it using something
00:15like a cordless drill battery now I'm
00:17going to do a number of tests and really
00:18try this thing out in the field but it
00:20all begins with the initial kit that you
00:22can purchase inside this box you'll
00:24receive the main starlink dish there is
00:26no separate router because the router is
00:28built inside the SLE unit on the back of
00:31the device is this folding stand that
00:33works quite well if you're putting it on
00:34something like a tabletop but it can be
00:37easily removed and they also include
00:39this pole adapter now they do include
00:41this AC to DC adapter in the box that
00:43will correctly power the unit but here
00:45is a major advantage of starlink mini it
00:47can be powered using DC current anywhere
00:50from 12 volts to 60 volts that opens up
00:53a huge amount of possibilities running
00:55it from things like car batteries all
00:57the way up to higher rank gear that you
00:59might be using a power something else as
01:01I mentioned there is a built-in router
01:02and it's full featured it gives you
01:04Wi-Fi controls the device along with
01:06things like filtering but there are two
01:08ports on the back of starlink mini now
01:10the first is used for your DC power
01:12supply but the next one is covered by
01:14this plug once you remove it this thing
01:16actually has a built-in ethernet port
01:19now that is pretty unusual because the
01:20main Starling system only has that as an
01:23accessory and this is a real ethernet
01:25port it's not designed for something
01:26like internal communication and you can
01:29plug a regular Cable in or at least
01:31almost if your ethernet cable has one of
01:33these strain reliefs you will need to
01:34cut it just to get that plug all the way
01:36in but I really don't recommend doing
01:38this unless you have no other choice
01:40because once it goes in the port and
01:42that tab connects in you won't be able
01:44to release it without using a type of
01:46flathead screwdriver and then you can
01:48pull the cable out starlink does offer a
01:51cable that will also maintain the
01:53waterproof abilities of this device
01:55because starlink mini is completely
01:57weatherproof provided you're using the
02:00now there was conflicting information
02:02online whether or not this ethernet port
02:04could handle power over ethernet to run
02:06the starlink mini so I did connect up a
02:09standard power over ethn adapter and
02:11plugged it into the port but
02:13unfortunately this was not successful it
02:15did not work for me and I wasn't able to
02:17power it up another clever feature is
02:19once you've got those cables plugged in
02:20if you want to put the stand back on you
02:22don't even have to remove them because
02:24they've got it kind of cut out so that
02:25the cable slip right in they include a
02:2730ft cable in the Box for the power
02:30needs for the device and you can see the
02:31end of this cable has two
02:33weatherproofing rings so once it's
02:35inserted this will maintain a completely
02:38weather type connection this ethernet
02:40port can be connected directly to a
02:42computer or router you can switch it to
02:44bypass mode which basically eliminates
02:47any internal routing and moves those
02:49functions to your external router and
02:51here is the proper starlink cable this
02:53is pretty unique it can plug into the
02:55port with those weather sealing rings
02:57but if you just give it a tug it
02:58automatically unplugs and you don't have
03:00to mess with getting that little tab
03:02undone starlink mini is designed to be a
03:04kind of grab Ando internet solution that
03:06you can take anywhere so as such they
03:08can't fit a motorized Mount of course
03:11into that device so once you set it up
03:13it might not be pointing correctly at
03:15the right satellites it's actually going
03:16to do a check and it will tell you
03:18precisely how to turn the dish now I
03:20didn't think this feature would really
03:21work or it would be cumbersome and not
03:23fast enough but instead this app
03:25actually works perfectly now you don't
03:26need to know much of anything just spin
03:28it in the direction that the app shows
03:30you once it's done correctly the app
03:32will tell you to stop it will do another
03:33check and make sure the dish is
03:35perfectly aligned power consumption is
03:38always a big concern unfortunately this
03:39small dish does not use a lot of
03:41electricity by powering this through my
03:43ecoflow with the AC adapter I only saw
03:46drawing between 20 and about 50 Watts
03:48maximum now I could use the built-in
03:50starlink speed test app but sometimes
03:52that thing is kind of flaky and I want
03:54to make sure that this is just a
03:55standard user type test meaning I want
03:58to test the speed that I would actually
03:59get just using my device so I'll be
04:01using the speed test.net app right for
04:03my phone wirelessly and as you can see I
04:06got about 124 Meg down with 15 Meg up I
04:11then repeated that same test on my
04:13laptop with a wireless connection and I
04:15got around 93 Meg down and around 14 Meg
04:18up now I'm going to do that same speed
04:21test using only the built-in ethernet
04:23port now generally this will give a
04:25pretty large speed increase but you've
04:27got to remember the testing on satellite
04:29can vary widely when I ran the test the
04:31first time I got 121 Meg down with 19 up
04:35so that was only a small speed increase
04:37on the upload so I repeated the test
04:39again and this time the results were
04:41actually worse and you might be thinking
04:43well who cares I'll never use ethernet
04:44I'll just stick with the wireless
04:45connection now that is fine if you're
04:47really close to the router but if you're
04:49going to be a little bit of a distance
04:50away I would highly recommend using the
04:53ethernet connection but now it's time to
04:55really try this device out in a way that
04:57you would normally use it now again
04:59remember Starling mini is designed for
05:01True off-grid connections where you want
05:03a tiny device and you're probably only
05:05using it in a really short-term basis
05:08here I'm using my two- wheel drive
05:09electric upco to get me down in my pond
05:11and I don't have any type of Cellular
05:13Connection or even Wi-Fi down here but
05:15you could easily use this thing on top
05:16of a mountain in the middle of a desert
05:18anywhere that you want an internet
05:20connection that you can't really get it
05:22any other way now for power this is
05:24where I'm going to use this Milwaukee
05:25drill battery combined with this mount
05:28on top of the motorcycle to hold the
05:30antenna setting this thing up is really
05:32easy now on the motorcycle I'm using
05:33this thing called a RAM mount to hold it
05:35securely but the other benefit is once
05:37it's powered up if I need to align it I
05:39can simply rotate it by loosening the
05:41clamp on the antenna
05:44mount so with this tiny dish that fit
05:47inside of a laptop case within 5 minutes
05:49I was on the internet the dish was
05:51aligned properly and I was getting over
05:54135 Meg down and 13 Meg up now keep in
05:58mind I'm connecting to this dish dish
06:00wirelessly using my iPhone from now
06:02about 30 ft away so those are pretty
06:04impressive speeds considering I'm not
06:06even using any other equipment and the
06:08whole thing is being powered off a
06:10cordless drill battery and I could run
06:12the starlink dish for about 6 hours
06:14using that small battery and now for the
06:16most important part the price first
06:18you've got to buy the hardware and
06:19they're currently selling it for
06:22$599 and that is that whole kit with the
06:24cables and the power supply the monthly
06:26plan is a bargain at just $30 a month
06:29but there's a catch you've got to
06:30already be a starlink user on top of
06:33that $30 a month they're only giving you
06:3650 gig of data transfer now you can go
06:39over it at a dollar more per gig now
06:41before you say this is a total ripoff
06:43when they introduce something new they
06:45generally price it much higher than it
06:47will eventually be sold to most people
06:50so I think this starlink mini is
06:51actually going to change in about 6
06:53months where they may reduce the price
06:55of the hardware but most importantly I
06:57think they will bring the monthly price
06:59of the day plan down and probably offer
07:01it as a standalone plan as well now old
07:04style satellite connections could cost
07:06you $3 to $400 a month and they may only
07:09give you one to 5 gig but I personally
07:12think if they want this thing to succeed
07:14they have got to completely change that
07:16plan maybe giving you unlimited data I
07:19have been using this for a couple of
07:20weeks I've learned a lot about it but
07:22most importantly it does work and it's
07:23very stable and I think the features in
07:25it are actually pretty impressive I just
07:27want to see that price come down and
07:29offer a lot more data transfer so that
07:31people could use this in many other ways
07:33but if you've got thoughts to share or
