00:02get overwhelmed and make mistakes in the
00:04process as you're in those early stages
00:06i know for myself i was guilty of this
00:09and made a lot of just mistakes along
00:11the road so what i wanted to do is
00:13revisit a topic that i certainly have
00:15covered in the past many years ago
00:17looking at beginner watch buying
00:18mistakes and refreshing it for just kind
00:20of a new perspective that i have in 2022
00:23and just to give some further
00:25information and ideas as you're maybe
00:27beginning your watch buying journey now
00:28i've looked at other just kind of
00:30concepts of this nature in the past
00:32looking at things i wish i knew before
00:33building a collection which was more
00:35about like a philosophy around
00:36collecting and what is kind of the
00:38thought process you should have when
00:39starting to amass a collection this is
00:41going to be more into the alignment of
00:44what are some common misconceptions
00:46mistakes that a lot of new buyers make
00:49when looking to purchase a watch now
00:51before we jump into this video check out

01:20unrealistic expectations of accuracy so
01:24when you're first getting into watches
01:26you're coming into a world that is
01:27dealing with technology and types of an
01:30art form that is not going to
01:31necessarily appeal to
01:33the greatest modern innovations so when
01:35you come in you have this preconceived
01:37idea of okay this is my life with my
01:40smartphone i know the exact time you're
01:42looking at getting a mechanical watch
01:43you see the price and you're like okay i
01:45can expect this thing to be fairly
01:46accurate which is a reasonable
01:48assumption i find most people don't know
01:50what could be deemed as acceptable when
01:52it comes to ranges of deviation for
01:54accuracy let's look at an entry-level
01:56option with mioda so their mioda 8
01:59series movements these are very popular
02:00found in many watches under 500 range of
02:03deviation on here is minus 20 to plus 40
02:05seconds a day and even with a swiss made
02:08standard grade at a 28 24 you're looking
02:10at plus or minus 12 seconds a day up to
02:12plus or minus 30 seconds a day so a lot
02:14of people what i find is they'll say hey
02:16this watch is running 30 seconds fast a
02:18day and they may have an entry-level
02:20myota movement or a seiko movement and
02:22the reality is there's nothing wrong
02:24with that movement that is kind of the
02:27realities and i think this is more the
02:28case when you're getting into those
02:30affordable watches and you're just
02:31expecting this amazing performance out
02:33of the box which in most cases is just
02:35not going to happen or at least you have
02:38to all keep it just relatively speaking
02:40into context these affordable watches
02:42are just going to be mass produced
02:44they're not going to have the same level
02:45of accuracy and really at the end of the
02:47day i think mechanical watches accuracy
02:50shouldn't be the number one thing you're
02:51going for now some people might disagree
02:53with me on that but if my accuracy
02:54really matters to you i would look for
02:56those type of certifications from cosc
02:58master chronometer certifications any
03:00internal testing standards that are
03:01quoted by a manufacturer if that really
03:04is important to you but for me i don't
03:06mind if a watch is say even 20 to 30
03:09seconds off a day from perfect time i'm
03:11perfectly okay with that but you really
03:13have to kind of set this expectation for
03:14yourself because i see it quite a bit
03:16now also being an ad people are just
03:18like oh this watch is running not the
03:20greatest it's it's a faulty watch or
03:22it's it's defective when it's running
03:23say 25 seconds fast a day and it's like
03:26a timex well that's perfectly in the
03:28acceptable range for accuracy for that
03:30watch so just keep this in mind if
03:32accuracy is important you look at courts
03:34or just don't get into mechanical
03:36watches at all have the right
03:37expectations here so now for this next
03:41thinking that an affordable watch or
03:43really any watch is going to appreciate
03:44in value and be an investment now i
03:47don't want to say that this is not
03:48possible there are watches that will
03:50appreciate in value but 98 to 99 of the
03:53watch market if you're talking about
03:55everything from designer watches all the
03:56way up to the most luxury independent
03:58brands i would say 98
04:01are going to act more like the car
04:04market than they are going to be other
04:08meaning that once you buy a watch
04:10chances are your watch is going to dip
04:12in value immediately some of them are
04:14going to hold their value more than
04:16others but mostly there are a few brands
04:19that are responsible for actually seeing
04:20any type of appreciation and this is
04:22also where a lot of people will say hey
04:24there's a lot more going on and i have
04:25an entire video talking about the ideas
04:28of supply and demand with a lot of these
04:30luxury products and just talking about
04:31watches as investments in more detail so
04:33i don't want to go into all of it here
04:34but really comes down to the brands that
04:36do the best when it comes to just
04:38appreciating in value as rolex ap patek
04:40and then some other independent brands
04:41like richard mill and fpjorn there's
04:43also no proof on how this is going to
04:44continue as we move forward in the watch
04:46market and i'm not trying to give
04:48investment advice that's not what i'm
04:49trying to do but i just think people are
04:50like looking for they have this bitcoin
04:53type of mentality where everything's
04:54seen as like an investment now you got
04:56nfts bitcoin i'm looking where to put
04:59discretionary income where can i start
05:00investing and making extra money watches
05:02seem like a great thing i just don't
05:04think people really understand that this
05:06is not really the case watch is yes you
05:08can make money with certain ones but
05:10it's just not really the realities it's
05:12very rare and it's something that when
05:14you're early stages it doesn't make that
05:15much sense you're basically buying penny
05:17stocks especially when you're talking
05:18about that affordable end no affordable
05:20watch is going to start out of nowhere
05:22become worth 20 000 in a short period of
05:25time that just does not happen keep all
05:27this into context and also consider that
05:29if you're trying to move on say you're
05:31even trying to sell a watch like
05:32something appreciates say like 25
05:35well are you going to be able to sell it
05:37yourself typically you're going to have
05:38to have a reputation as a seller to sell
05:41it at the going market rate because
05:42there's going to be established dealers
05:44that are going to be able to mark things
05:46up to that market price
05:48most cases you're not going to see that
05:49premium so factoring all that in maybe
05:51you have to use a third-party service to
05:53actually sell it where there's going to
05:54be selling fees at the end of the day
05:56it's probably not going to even be a
05:57profit-generating activity when you
05:59factor all those costs in and just
06:01having the difficulty of somebody that's
06:02going to trust you to buy it from you so
06:04just keep all of this into context this
06:06is something i just get questions about
06:07this all the time and it's if there's
06:09one question that annoys me the most is
06:10talking about just watches as
06:11investments uh but you know what i think
06:13we've all kind of perpetuated this idea
06:15in a way the market has perpetuated this
06:17with just the certain circumstances that
06:19have just unfolded in the last several
06:21years but that's my take on that this is
06:23something i certainly would just dismiss
06:24and do not make this mistake and
06:26thinking that your affordable watch
06:27really any watch is going to appreciate
06:29like crazy in value now this next one
06:31might seem obvious but whenever i show
06:33somebody a watch for the first time that
06:34they're really not into watches in
06:35general one thing that they always just
06:39is the strap or the bracelet that is
06:41attached to the watch i remember one of
06:43my college roommates said i like the
06:44apple watch because i can change my
06:46strap and it made me realize that i
06:47don't think a lot of people recognize
06:49that you can change out your strap when
06:51you're looking to buy a watch one thing
06:52i'll just say here is i think you have
06:54to develop a expectation and almost a
06:57ability to visualize how a watch could
07:01change with a different strap on it this
07:03will come in like two different phases
07:04one is okay just understanding like how
07:06would that look with a nato strap how
07:07would that look with a different leather
07:08strap in a different style also maybe
07:10factoring in how does the
07:13structure of the lugs and where the
07:15strap would maybe actually fit within
07:18factor into the case profiles they have
07:20longer lugs like how can you visualize
07:22how a strap would look on an additional
07:25watch i just bring this up because i
07:27think a lot of people i remember just
07:28doing a video about just showing some
07:29people like a blank pawn and it was on a
07:31nato strap like they said oh yeah i like
07:32the watch but then i don't really like
07:34the nato strap that's on it and that was
07:36like the number one thing that got in
07:38the way of them saying like it's a good
07:39watch versus a bad watch and this is
07:41something that i think when you're early
07:42on maybe you don't consider fully like
07:44how can you have that visualization to
07:46see whether or not this watch could work
07:48for you if it did come with something
07:50else or you're able to have some
07:51creativity to express it in a different
07:53way than what's coming from the factory
07:55for number four here
07:56pretty basic but i think this is huge
07:58when you're early on is buying
08:00impulsively whenever you start to
08:01develop a new passion it's very easy to
08:04get caught up in just spending a lot of
08:05money all at once and you feel like you
08:07have to just develop this taste and just
08:09keep going and have all this experience
08:11in a very short period of time
08:13excitement can create impulsiveness when
08:15it comes to buying and this could be a
08:17really difficult thing to overcome as
08:19time goes on a couple things that happen
08:21your tastes are just going to change so
08:23you end up just buying so much when
08:25maybe your knowledge level is not where
08:26it should be to be able to make these
08:28decisions in a proper way to just know
08:30your uh really personal leanings when it
08:32comes to what you want out of a watch
08:33and you have all these watches that you
08:35don't really like and then you're stuck
08:36in this situation where
08:37i don't really know how to move on from
08:39them and like i don't really know where
08:41to go from here and you have all this
08:42confusion around your collecting journey
08:44i think you're especially susceptible to
08:46this in the early stages because you
08:47can't sometimes rationalize buying a
08:50more expensive watch in these stages so
08:52you just think okay i'm just gonna buy
08:54more and when you buy more then it just
08:56creates these impulsive easy decisions
08:58because you can in some cases do that
09:00financially responsibly and it just
09:02starts to create this hoarding mentality
09:04in a way and you just kind of will buy
09:06things based on whatever looks cool in
09:07the moment you don't sleep on decisions
09:09you just go ahead and purchase anything
09:10in sight that looks cool to you i think
09:12knowing that your taste will change and
09:13also just understanding the idea that
09:15refinement in a great collection only
09:17comes after you exercise patience number
09:19five having a limited or just
09:21unstructured way of looking at
09:24dimensions and knowing what works for
09:25you so what i usually do and i've
09:28definitely learned a lot more with just
09:29my personal taste my range of sizes that
09:32work well for me has definitely expanded
09:35as i've been able to handle more and
09:36more watches over the years but it was
09:38always good and helpful for me to be
09:40able to try a watch make that mistake
09:42and it's always great to make this
09:43mistake without having to actually buy
09:45it at a really extreme premium to really
09:48understand your watch size and your
09:50preferences for your wrist size now i
09:51have a whole video on this subject where
09:53i go into details and like things to
09:55consider so i don't want to go into all
09:56of this but since more people are going
09:58to buy watches online and i think this
10:00is going to continue to expand in the
10:02coming years you really want to know
10:04what your preferred sizes are and some
10:06just recommendations i would have is
10:08just look at your collection look what
10:09fits you well think of things like dial
10:12the bezel ratio lug to lug also think
10:14about the actual watch itself and what
10:16features or what is it really its
10:18intended purpose a fleeker watch should
10:20wear different than a dress watch all of
10:22this helps build that context around
10:24what your preferred dimension set is
10:26going to be i think it's good to keep an
10:27outline on what you prefer but also
10:29don't be so stringent here keep it a bit
10:31fluid understand the things you like you
10:34don't like and test out different things
10:35within your own collection or just be
10:37that guy go to the store with some
10:39calipers and just try some things on see
10:40what you like and you don't like and
10:42figure out the sizes of those watches or
10:44try things on in store and then go on
10:46the internet and just kind of cross
10:47reference like hey that fit really well
10:49that's the size dimension set for that
10:51i'd probably be able to buy that or
10:53maybe something similar and really enjoy
10:55it use this get those data points figure
10:57out what you like and don't just go
10:59crazy and make a ton of mistakes and
11:01just buying something that maybe isn't
11:03really just meant for you now for our
11:05final point we have buying to be
11:07accepted and part of the community now i
11:09am well aware of the snobbery and just
11:11sometimes the intense nature of many
11:13collectors and how they're maybe not the
11:14most welcoming people at times but i
11:17like to say just ignore those people and
11:18i think at the end of the day you have
11:20to buy what you want and you can't get
11:22really caught up in this idea that
11:24there's like this watch that's like a
11:25rite of passage to become a collector
11:27that you have to own or you need to have
11:29a certain type of collection that is
11:31correct or you need to own one of
11:32everything i need more watches just to
11:34be a collector this is all nonsense and
11:36you really don't need to even think
11:38about this any further than hey i like
11:40this i want to buy this that's really
11:42what it's all about there's no one watch
11:43that's going to be like hey i'm part of
11:45the club now and you know hey look at me
11:46guys that just doesn't happen i remember
11:49when i was first getting into collecting
11:50i just bought an skx because hey
11:52everybody's got an skx that's just what
11:54you do when you collect watches right
11:55well no you don't need to buy any type
11:58of watch there are going to be those
11:59hype pieces that if you like them
12:01absolutely go for them if you like an
12:02skx if you like a prx you like
12:05you know some other seiko watches and
12:06some hamilton khaki feels like just go
12:08for those watches if you enjoy them you
12:10think you can really utilize it then go
12:13for it but otherwise i just wouldn't put
12:14any more weight to this concept and it's
12:17really interesting because for me
12:18watches are so much an expression of
12:19individuality but as you get into wash
12:22collecting a lot of people just like the
12:24same things and it's almost like a huge
12:26exercise of groupthink where i think the
12:29better thing to do is just the shared
12:30point should be enthusiasm not the
12:32watches you decide to collect if they
12:34just so happen to over uh overlap with
12:36other people and what they like that's
12:37fine but just make sure you're making
12:39those decisions based on what you like
12:41what you're interested in at the time
12:42don't hold so much weight and be hard on
12:44yourself if you maybe change your mind
12:46in the future but just keep all this
12:47into context i think you'll be a happier
12:49collector as an end result but guys
12:51those are six mistakes and
12:52misconceptions that i think new watch
12:54buyers make and i just wanted to kind of
12:56mention and call attention to so that
12:58you can avoid them because i certainly
12:59have been guilty of several of these in
