00:00all right here we are two canon l series
00:0424 to 70 f 2.8 and the 24 to 105
00:10f 4. both of these lenses are absolutely
00:13incredible in their own ways they both
00:16have advantages and today we're going to
00:18talk about my thoughts on which one of
00:20these lenses you should buy and it kind
00:23of more broadly applies i think or at
00:25least my experience now having shot on
00:28the rf platform for about three years
00:31now let's see one of the r come out 19
00:34yeah a little over three years now i'm
00:35gonna give you three scenarios to think
00:36about when making a purchase decision
00:38trying to cover this focal range whether
00:41you want to go with the f4 and have a
00:44focal length and save a lot of money or
00:47if you want to go with the f2a to lose
00:49some of that focal length and definitely
00:50spend a heck of a lot more money and
00:52i'll say this right out the gate and i
00:54feel like this is super important
00:55because it's something that i didn't
00:57really fully grasp early on in my
01:00photography career and that is that a
01:02fast aperture is only one third of the
01:04equation when it comes to subject
01:06separation and i know that's a really
01:08important thing and everyone can be
01:09tempted to move towards that faster
01:12aperture but the other two pieces are
01:14just as important which is focal length
01:16and distance to your subject along with
01:18your subject's relationship to their
01:20background so the first scenario
01:22scenario one that i think you need to be
01:24thinking about lenses and which one of
01:26these lenses to go with is like weddings
01:29or events if you're doing professional
01:31event and wedding photography you have a
01:33book or maybe your second shooting for
01:35someone you lined up for a season you
01:37know that work is coming in and maybe
01:40you just got your first r series or rf
01:42series camera i think this lens the rf
01:4624 to 70 f28 is probably going to be
01:49your best bet and not just because it
01:50has that faster aperture and is able to
01:53give you sort of like a really nice
01:55focal length a couple things that i've
01:58i think this lens i ended up i end up
02:00like referring to it as my
02:02uh like church and events lens anytime i
02:04like do something for my church uh this
02:06is always the one that sort of goes on
02:09my camera and now while i don't shoot
02:11weddings personally i have many friends
02:12who are photographers that have and i've
02:14been in a ton of weddings and
02:16you guys have seen some of those videos
02:18as well but i've definitely shot at my
02:20fair share of events and paid event
02:23shooting type stuff well i'm not gonna
02:24get into in this video why i chose the
02:2724 to 70 f28 over the 2870
02:30f2 i do have that video on my channel
02:33and i will link it down below so you
02:34guys can see what that comparison looks
02:36like but i think this is more of a
02:37conversation for the beginner the person
02:38who's just diving in just getting
02:40started especially if you're second
02:41shooting or if these are your first uh
02:44wedding photos wedding photography
02:46opportunities the 24 to 70 is i think
02:49the best bang for the buck it's gonna
02:51narrow you in on that focal range and in
02:54my experience you're not really shooting
02:56past like a hundred a lot of wedding
02:59photographers that i know are typically
03:01shooting with primes they're gonna shoot
03:02with like a 35 and maybe like an 85 at a
03:05faster aperture but if you're not quite
03:08there yet and you want to feel out your
03:09style i think this is a great lens to
03:11have especially if you can't afford
03:13those high end primes right out the gate
03:16this lens is going to get you i think
03:17most of the way there also can really
03:19help you out if you're hybrid shooting
03:20maybe you need to shoot a little bit of
03:22video as well if you're second shooting
03:23this particular lens is going to do
03:24great in that department because it does
03:26have image stabilization you don't get
03:28that with the 28 to 70 you aren't going
03:30to get that with any primes and you can
03:34with that ibis image stabilization like
03:36the r6 the r5 maybe the r3 if you have
03:39that but you're probably not starting
03:41out on that and even if you don't have
03:42that even if you're shooting something
03:45this lens is going to at least give you
03:47that opportunity to have some image
03:48stabilization which is going to help in
03:50those event scenarios wouldn't that be
03:52cool if like you were at a wedding and
03:54you're able to shoot like a bunch of
03:55like 100 to 200 70 to 200 stuff i'm sure
03:58people have done it i'm sure it's a look
03:59but um typically this focal range right
04:01here for events 24 to 70 is uh bread and
04:04butter for those types of things i do
04:06kind of wish i've said this before that
04:08canon made like a 35 to 85. i think that
04:11would be a really cool lens to have
04:13specifically for events and portraits
04:15and things like that
04:18we don't have that we have the 24 to 70
04:20f28 and still a pretty awesome lens now
04:23if you're doing more product photography
04:25lifestyle photography type stuff if
04:27you're working with brands something
04:29that i've built my personal brand and
04:31portfolio work off of we did that all on
04:35this the 24 to 105 f4 and here's why i
04:38think this is actually the better choice
04:40over the 24 to 70 f28 this lens is a
04:43part of that canon l series pedigree
04:45that canon is known for it is not a
04:48skimp it is not a sacrifice on quality
04:51across any of the lenses in the l series
04:53category that overlap with it it is f4
04:56so you're not going to get as much of
04:58that subject separation but what i've
05:00found is shooting outdoors especially
05:02whether it's overcast or sunny
05:05f4 is more than enough and if you have
05:08the outdoors and the space to put some
05:10space between you and your subject your
05:12subject and your background you can
05:13absolutely get some isolating shots
05:15still at f4 and at that 105 or even down
05:19like 85 70. and that is because the
05:21separation is not just aperture it is
05:24aperture combined with that focal length
05:26and then applied to your composition
05:28with your subject i wish someone had
05:29told me that and at least as plain as
05:31hopefully i'm telling you guys that
05:33today but yeah this lens is super light
05:36it feels like it's almost like half a
05:37pound lighter than any other l-series
05:39lens that i've ever held so it's great
05:40if you need to hike up a mountain or i
05:42just need to be out on a shoot all day
05:44having this on your camera body all day
05:46is gonna save your wrists your back just
05:48that ever so slightly more and you're
05:50gonna save about a thousand dollars by
05:52buying this lens over something
05:54like the 24 to 70 or 28 to 70 or really
05:58any other l series zoom lens that canon
06:01offers today and i will say this there
06:03is a 24 to 105 zoom lens that has a
06:05variable aperture and i think that's
06:07where you don't necessarily get the
06:09benefits of what this l series 24 to 105
06:12has to offer that constant f4 is a super
06:16power at those higher focal lengths more
06:19than enough compression it is definitely
06:21different than having like that i think
06:22it's seven one or eight
06:24somewhere uh that the top end of the
06:28non-l-series version of this glass
06:30closes down to and remember this is just
06:32to get started this is to sort of find
06:35your footing with the rf platform if
06:37these are the sort of first two lenses
06:39that you're looking at for your first rf
06:41piece of glass and maybe you haven't
06:42been shooting previously on like a full
06:44frame camera like the old like 5d mark
06:47iv or really any type of ef full-frame
06:50camera if you're just getting your toes
06:51in the water this lens is great because
06:53you are saving that money and you will
06:55be able to then make that l series
06:57quality work and apply that extra
07:00thousand dollars you're gonna save to
07:01the prime that you want that's gonna get
07:03you the right sort of look then you'll
07:06be able to start prototyping your work
07:08hey do you like shooting at 50 35 are
07:10you finding that you're using a lot of
07:11that compression maybe you want to save
07:13up for a 70-200 i wish i had spent more
07:16time in those higher focal ranges when i
07:19first started out i was really like
07:20enamored with 35 and 50 for some reason
07:22um with this lens and i was just stoked
07:24how good it looked even at those uh more
07:26normal focal lengths but um i think had
07:29i been listening to myself if i go back
07:31and tell myself that
07:33i think i would have um
07:34jumped into the 70-200 a lot quicker and
07:39right there it's in the arsenal now but
07:41i have this lens to thank for that and i
07:44still use this lens to this day my wife
07:46still uses this lens today as well
07:48fantastic lens never giving it up it's
07:50awesome so finally if you're a hybrid
07:52shooter if you're someone who's not just
07:53going to be doing photography some type
07:55of professional photography but if
07:57you're also doing video maybe more on
07:59like the vlogging youtube side not
08:01necessarily doing cinema stuff though i
08:03have used the 24 to 70 in some scenarios
08:07to do some like second cam type shooting
08:09stuff and you'll get you know with that
08:10wider aperture a really good looking
08:13image but with that said i think if
08:14you're hybrid shooting i would still
08:16recommend to start on the 24 to 105 and
08:19here's why if you're a youtuber or
08:21anyone who wants to do vlogging or
08:23creating video for even like instagram
08:25or tick tock or whatever it is and you
08:27want that that mirrorless full frame
08:29quality i shoot most of these videos if
08:32not almost all these videos recently at
08:34f4 even though i have on the camera
08:37right now the 15 to 35 f28 i think i
08:41zoom lens that canon makes for the rf
08:43platform i still shoot all these videos
08:44at f4 and that is because i want to have
08:48my focal plane for my body and what i'm
08:51doing to be wide enough that you don't
08:54constantly get that focus
08:56breathing that can just be really
08:58annoying at least as a viewer i don't
08:59enjoy it i know my a lot of my viewers
09:01don't enjoy it they like that you can
09:03have a sort of locked off shot and they
09:05can just focus on you and they're not
09:07like okay the camera's focusing and what
09:09should i be looking at right now i find
09:11at these wider focal lengths like i'm
09:13shooting this at 20 right now i find
09:15that these wider focal lengths kind of
09:17need a stop down aperture to make that
09:20focal plane a big enough distance for a
09:23human being to sit in it with maybe
09:25something that they're talking about now
09:26that said you may be saying hey i don't
09:28have the best lighting in my studio or
09:30in my van if you're doing like van life
09:31or tiny house i've talked to several
09:33people who do van life and tiny house
09:35and that was a concern but if you are
09:37buying the f4 over the f2 8
09:41you're saving a thousand dollars you can
09:43afford even like a really nice aperture
09:45light which is what i have right here i
09:47have an aperture 120d on with a nice
09:49little softbox light dome you could get
09:53cheaper than that but you could even
09:56lighting setup for your studio or
09:58wherever you're going to be filming and
09:59that's going to give you a lot more
10:00control than just opening up your
10:02aperture and hoping that something looks
10:04a little bit better your scene will look
10:06better with a stop down aperture and
10:09controlled light than just trying to
10:11open your aperture and then having to
10:12find a light source that looks good this
10:15is i think a critical thing that a lot
10:17of people don't necessarily think about
10:18right out the gate when they're buying
10:20their glass they're only thinking about
10:21how the glass can solve the problem for
10:23them i think if you think of the the
10:24holistic picture of what you're trying
10:26to make you know this is even money that
10:28you could save and then invest in audio
10:31like i'm using a boomed microphone right
10:33now to a little apogee interface um that
10:36makes these videos sound a lot better i
10:41so many rode microphones that are like
10:44rode videomicro the rode videomic pro
10:46plus great microphones but it's nice to
10:48have like an actually boomed microphone
10:50and again if you aren't trying to solve
10:52all the problems in in the lens and you
10:54can build an environment around you
10:56where you can get the job done i think
10:58just as good with an f4 lens
11:01use that money to build out um
11:03the set and the space and i think that's
11:05the better investment
11:07for most people so i'm curious how many

12:37uh all the positive effects that it's
12:38had not just for my business but for my
12:40mental health i kind of wanna i'm diving
12:43in a little bit more with like the
12:45journaling and the reading and sort of
12:47like the stuff that i do in my daily
12:48practices for my own
12:51mental health and hopefully make that

13:24with both these lenses
13:33which should be on the 15 to 35 and the
13:3514 to 35 i don't think the 1435 has a
13:39um i know they're short throws but um
13:41every zoom line should have a lock
13:46every zoom lens should have a lock
13:48just how to get that out super important
13:51very super important
13:58such good lens 24 to 105
14:01like the most underrated rf lens
