00:43i've been shooting with the fuji x pro 3
00:45and i thought i'd share a few of my
00:48please bear in mind it's these things
00:49are subjective and these are just my
00:52so i'm a professional photographer based
00:53in the uk i've been shooting canning
00:55cameras most of my life i've shot in
00:56most of the other main systems out there
00:58so the thing to remember with this
01:00camera is is that it was designed i
01:02quite specifically for around the street
01:04photography genre so it's not going to
01:06be everything to everybody not
01:07everyone's going to like it
01:08and there's a few quirks with this
01:10camera that i'll go on to talk about
01:12and again those are things that people
01:14might really like or might dislike and
01:15that's up to the individual to make
01:18so to begin with i really like cameras
01:22bionicly connected to me from the first
01:25moment that i picked them up and this is
01:26this camera has that in bucket loads
01:29every setting is where i want it to be
01:31every dial is where i want it to be it
01:33just feels right for me
01:34and it's rare that that happens to me i
01:37don't think i felt quite so connected to
01:38a camera in a long time actually
01:41it looks great as well i really like the
01:43aesthetic it looks very discreet and for
01:45street photography that's really
01:48so when you pick it up my hand went
01:50immediately to the on
01:52off switch which is up here near the
01:54shutter button and then the shutter
01:55button falls exactly under your finger
01:57your left hand instantly goes to the
01:59aperture ring which is on the lens which
02:01is all very old-school and cool
02:02the shutter speed is up on the top with
02:06aperture control if you want it and then
02:10dial on top of the shutter speed which
02:12is really instinctive if you're used to
02:14specifically if you're used to
02:16old-school cameras it reminds me very
02:18much of the olympus om-1 that i used to
02:20the best thing for me is the exposure
02:22control dial which is near the thumb at
02:23the back which is where your thumb falls
02:25instantly i like shooting in aperture
02:28and it's great to have that control
02:31and the weight of the dial is actually
02:34just about perfect for me i've got quite
02:36big hands and so some
02:37some of the cameras mirrorless cameras
02:38in particular are a bit fiddly for me
02:40is about right really nice it has dual
02:43card slots which is really important for
02:45kind of hugely important when you shoot
02:48professionally to have a backup and i
02:50really like that they've done that the
02:53big conversation piece with this camera
02:55is the electronic viewfinder
02:58hybrid optical viewfinder thing that is
03:00on the side now most
03:01cameras have their viewfinders in the
03:05and you and that can kind of lose a bit
03:06of connection because you're hiding
03:08behind the camera when you're looking
03:09this is nice because it's over on the
03:11side and so if you're shooting street or
03:13documentary it means you have a really
03:15good level of connection um with what's
03:18going on around you and maybe with your
03:19subject and i'm very fond of the
03:21viewfinder being in that in that
03:23position now the hybrid nature comes
03:25because the first time that you look
03:26through it you will see an evf which is
03:28an electronic viewfinder electronic
03:30version of the image typical with most
03:33cameras these days and that works fine
03:35however if you flip this switch then you
03:37go over to the hybrid optical viewfinder
03:40which is very much like a leica
03:41rangefinder so if you're
03:43liking shooting like that style then you
03:46and in the corner you can press the
03:47button again and you get a little
03:49electronic focus aid which is really
03:52cool so if you wanted to use manual
03:54focus or zone focus you can
03:56kind of hop between all of those
04:00i thought it wouldn't work to begin with
04:02i thought it might be a bit quirky but
04:03i found myself using it a surprising
04:06amount and really enjoyed it and i think
04:07a lot of people that
04:09choose this camera will find themselves
04:12drawn to experimenting between the
04:15viewfinder options and trying out
04:17different things with different
04:19and then probably finding one that they
04:22like to stick to and i think a lot of
04:23people will probably end up using the
04:26mostly i've been shooting with the 23
04:29f2 lens equivalent to 35 mil in old
04:31school money which is a great street
04:34and it's great sharp wide open f2 it's
04:38nice and light and compact and small and
04:40fuji do a great range of lenses these
04:42days i think most people
04:43are shooting with the camera like this
04:45are going to use the smallish
04:46prime lenses or the standard lens but it
04:48works with any of the
04:49lenses from the fuji x lineup the image
04:53quality of the camera is fine if you
04:55what you need out of this camera then
04:56you're doing something significantly
04:58wrong the files look great
05:00and the the iso range is great too goes
05:03up really high i shot some
05:04self portraits with it the other day in
05:06really dark lighting
05:0812 800 iso i believe the pictures
05:11fi the picture quality is fine it's a
05:12bit grainy but that's quite nice and i
05:14think most people that shoot with this
05:15kind of camera won't mind that kind of
05:17grainy look so the next conversation
05:21piece with the camera what people will
05:22either like or dislike and i dislike it
05:24i'm afraid is the screen
05:26it doesn't have a typical screen in the
05:28back it has this little square
05:30and this little square shows you which
05:32film simulation preset you're using
05:34which we'll get on into a minute
05:35but it doesn't have the typical screen
05:37on the back what it has is
05:40the ability to flip it out and
05:43put the screen into waist level finder
05:46for your street photography and i love
05:48these kind of flip out screens like this
05:50because it means that you can discreetly
05:53take pictures you can take pictures from
05:55and you can take pictures from high up
05:57if you want to just like a rolleiflex or
06:00works great love it but it won't go
06:07kind of screen on the back of the camera
06:11mode and that is a huge pain and i find
06:14it really frustrating
06:15because the reason they did it was
06:17actually really smart thinking
06:19they did it so that photographers would
06:20become more pure in their photography
06:22and i'm sure a lot of people will love
06:24it they'll become more pure in their
06:26photography they won't be chimping and
06:27looking at the pictures that have gone
06:29and they'll be much more in the present
06:31and focused on the pictures that they're
06:34and so they've actually sort of
06:35restricted photographers from looking at
06:37the screen by actually making it not
06:38quite so available also doesn't tilt out
06:40by the way so you can't do any selfies
06:42or anything like that easily
06:43but for me though it just doesn't work
06:45not having the screen
06:46available as standard on the back of the
06:48camera i've just become
06:50too used to using it over the years
06:53and i rely on it a lot and i don't chimp
06:56a lot i'm not somebody that walks around
06:58staring into the back of the camera i
07:00tend to be quite in the present when i'm
07:02but i do like the ability to be able to
07:04glance down in between shots and just
07:06see that i've got what i
07:08thought i was going to get with the
07:10camera and make sure that i'm roughly in
07:12the right place in my settings
07:13i know that you can do that through the
07:16but i quite like to do it while i'm
07:18talking to a subject or while i'm
07:20or you know i don't want to be kind of
07:23to preview my pictures through the evf
07:25while i'm talking to somebody for
07:26example and so for me it doesn't work
07:28for others it might i'm not going to
07:30talk about video because that's not why
07:31i got hold of this camera in the first
07:33it's got some pretty impressive specs 4k
07:35up to 60 frames a second
07:37one of the things i was interested to
07:38try out and i wasn't sure if it was
07:39gonna be for me or not
07:40is the film simulation options that this
07:44and what this is is that the fuji color
07:46scientists looked at some of the old
07:49they studied the the aesthetic and the
07:50look of that film and then recreated it
07:53and baked into this camera so that you
07:54can apply it to your pictures as you
07:56take them and you can choose between i
07:5810 different options there's black and
07:59whites and colors and sort of high
08:01saturation and low saturation options
08:03and they all relate back to some of the
08:04actual fuji names of the film
08:07and it's cool you can flick between them
08:09as you shoot so you can
08:10one minute be shooting black and white
08:12and then you can move over to a color
08:14and that's very nice and i quite like
08:16the effects the problem for me is that
08:19it works only in jpeg and i really like
08:22i really like shooting raw and coming
08:24back with a file that represents all the
08:27quality that the camera can take and
08:30applying my own look to that picture in
08:33post-production afterwards rather than
08:34having it done for me in camera
08:36now i can see why people would love the
08:39i think it works really well and
08:41actually better than i thought it might
08:43work on the camera and the jpegs look
08:44great so i think it's
08:45for anyone that's doing that i think
08:47it's an impressive way of working
08:49and it cuts down a lot of your
08:52post-production time it's just not for
08:54again if i was shooting for fun i
08:56probably would use that all of the time
08:57but just when i'm working professionally
08:59it's important to me that i have a raw
09:00you can shoot raw and jpeg at the same
09:02time and apply those settings
09:04the film simulation look into the jpeg
09:07which is probably the best of both
09:09but it also creates more files and more
09:13um if you shoot as much as i do and it's
09:16just another thing to worry about
09:18but i think for a lot of people shooting
09:20both might be really good option
09:23the interesting thing with this camera
09:24is that it shoots 11 frames per second
09:26on the motor drive if you want to
09:28so if you're predominantly into street
09:30or documentary but occasionally like to
09:32shoot a bit of sport
09:33then you could whack a big long lens on
09:35the front of this and go and use the evf
09:37and you've actually got a very very
09:40sports camera and the same for landscape
09:42if you like shooting landscape you've
09:45flip down screen that you could stick a
09:48nice wide angle lens on here
09:50and your filters and put it on a tripod
09:51and you could go out and you could
09:53you have a very capable landscape
09:54photography camera and i'm very grateful

09:57i know that there's probably things i've
09:58missed out of this review and
10:00i'm sorry for that if you've been hoping
10:04else but these are just my thoughts and
10:07pursuing this camera but i may be
10:09pursuing the x pro 2
10:10which i believe has a more static style
10:14and similar image quality so you never
10:17i'd love to hear your opinions if you're
