00:02today I'll be sharing this Cartier
00:04Santos adlc with you all I'm going to
00:07talk about its physical attributes tiny
00:09details at watch size and Publications
00:11tend to gloss over and do a quick
00:13unboxing to show what comes with it
00:16now I use quotes with unboxing here
00:18since I've actually had this for around
00:19the year now I just wanted to make this
00:22video as informative as possible for
00:24everyone and turn it into the resource
00:26that I wish I had when I first
00:28considered buying this watch
00:30that said I'll also talk about my first
00:32year ownership experience and how things
00:34have held up towards the end of this
00:38based on the Santos de carte line launch
00:40in 2018 this adlt variant was released
00:43by Cartage just two years later in 2020.
00:46I was immediately interested when I
00:48learned about it but didn't really have
00:50free funds to buy one back then
00:52the pandemic also prevented me from
00:55actually going somewhere and having the
00:57opportunity to buy the Santos avlc
01:00fast forward to 2022 when my wife and I
01:03fresh from our wedding finally got to
01:06we have this long trip that started in
01:08New York continued down to New Orleans
01:10west of San Jose and a few nights in
01:13Yosemite then San Francisco before
01:15finishing with a beautiful Pacific Coast
01:17Highway Drive South to Los Angeles
01:19I would admit to having visited more
01:21than one car chase store before the PCH
01:23drive but it wasn't until we got to
01:25Santa Barbara that I finally came face
01:27to face with this Santos adlc
01:30the dealer gave me a great price along
01:32with some freebies for my wife and the
01:41going to say adlc a lot of times in this
01:44video so I might as well talk about it
01:47adlc stands for amorphous diamond-like
01:50carbon it's a coating that's applied to
01:52pre-finished materials in this case
01:54stainless steel at around 200 degrees
01:56Celsius and is supposed to provide
01:59Superior wear resistance over materials
02:01that are left otherwise untreated
02:03I'll talk about how it has held up later
02:06in the ownership experience part of this
02:09before anything else I want to show you
02:11guys the dimensions on this watch
02:13someone commented in a past video that
02:15carte doesn't really disclose full face
02:17Dimensions anymore so hopefully this
02:21the footprint on this is almost
02:23identical to large Santos de cartes by
02:26the way I say almost because there seem
02:28to be extremely minor differences
02:30between the two which I'll show you guys
02:34so the k-swift is around 38 millimeters
02:38and with the crown guard the figure
02:40increases to around 40 millimeters the
02:43crown itself is around four millimeters
02:45long and the full width of the watch
02:46with the crown is around 42 millimeters
02:49onto the lengths excluding lugs the
02:52Santos adlc is around 37 millimeters
02:57including them it's 47 millimeters long
03:01viewing the side here the center section
03:04is just a little over nine millimeters
03:06thick with the bezel accounting for
03:09around two millimeters of that
03:12with all those Dimensions out of the way
03:13let's talk about the watch itself carte
03:16has made a lot of changes to the Santos
03:18design language over the last few
03:19decades and the most significant
03:21departure from tradition for the Santos
03:23de Cartier was the way they made the
03:25bezel flow to the top and bottom edges
03:27of the case instead of keeping to the
03:30given the rather short lug to luck
03:33Dimensions the bezel flow helps the
03:35watch look ever so slightly longer than
03:39viewing the non-adlc Santos de carte
03:42you'll notice the bezel is polished and
03:48I'll probably talk about that in another
03:49video anyway this stands in contrast
03:52with the Santos adlcs which has vertical
03:55brushing instead of a nice smooth
03:59on one hand it enhances the illusion of
04:02length that the flowing vessel
04:03introduced on the other it helps subdue
04:06the overall look of the watch and make
04:08it wear a little smaller than the
04:10non-adlc Santos de Cartier
04:13in contrast to the brushed finish on the
04:15bezel face its sides are polished you
04:18don't really notice it unless you
04:20closely examine the watch but there's a
04:21nice little detail for when you actually
04:23do it moving on to the rest of the case
04:26the face and sides of it are brushed
04:29lengthwise as well while the chamfers
04:33instead of a traditional blue spinel
04:35cabochon the adlc crown gets a black one
04:38instead further adding to the stealthy
04:42Circle back to the case chamfers here
04:44for a moment another one of carte's
04:47departures from tradition was their
04:49Integrations the crown guards for the
04:51Shaffers on prior Santos models the
04:54crown guards kind of just stick out from
04:56the side of the case
04:57the latest ones have them nicely flowing
05:00off of the case chamfers
05:02this change reduces the visual weight of
05:04the crown guards when viewing the Santos
05:08though this is something more obvious on
05:10the standard case pieces then on the
05:14if you're interested in the different
05:16little changes that carte did the Santos
05:18line over the years I made a video about
05:20the carte Santos's design Evolution a
05:22few weeks ago I'll have a link up in the
05:25card and in the description box below so
05:27please do check it out once you're done
05:28with this video before we move on to the
05:31rest of the watch I want to share two
05:33things here first the adlc treatment
05:36softens the edges and corners on the
05:39on the stainless steel Santos de Cartier
05:42the transitions between polished and
05:44brushed finishes are very sharp and
05:46prominent you can even feel these
05:49transitions when you pinch the watch
05:50case like I'm doing here and the
05:52sharpness is apparent even on the 45
05:54degree angles that the chamfers share
05:57with the face and sides of the watch
06:00you don't get the same visual and
06:02tactile feedback with the Santos adlc
06:05second while the two Santos de cartes
06:08are officially listed as large models
06:10the proportions of their cases vary ever
06:13so slightly as to make this shipping
06:15protector for the avlc piece
06:19not fit as well over the stainless steel
06:25I can't tell you exactly how they vary
06:28but the difference is there
06:31fortunately this minor variance between
06:33case Dimensions did not affect the quick
06:35switch strap changing system that was
06:37first launched in the 2018 santosacarte
06:39the Santos adlc comes with this black
06:42rubber strap shown here and another flat
06:44black alligator strap which I'll show
06:47it's also compatible with the straps for
06:49all the large Santos the car case that
06:52I can even install the stainless steel
06:55bracelet on it trouble free
07:00note that the deployance change sometime
07:02in late 2019 or early 2020 though older
07:06Santos de cartes used to have the single
07:08fold friction lock deployam that made
07:10folding both strap ends underneath it
07:14newer ones including this adlc piece now
07:18come with this push button single fold
07:19deployment that's much more comfortable
07:22one end has a fixed length and is
07:24installed with a quick release spring
07:26bar while the other has holes for the
07:28clasp to slot into the excess tucks
07:31neatly underneath for a clean look
07:40in line with tradition the Santos adlc
07:43gets Roman numerals on the dial down to
07:46the watchmakers 4. all of them are
07:49luminous this time around which provides
07:51a nice utilitarian twist to the classic
07:54the date window still stays in the six
07:56o'clock position but now has white print
07:58on a black background to better match
08:02or Railway track minute scale stays
08:06where it's supposed to be and is also
08:07done in white on black
08:10a lot of similarities with prior Santos
08:12to car chase and yep a lot of
08:17While most of the others get flat dials
08:19the Santos adlc sports a multi-layered
08:22one that steps down inside the railway
08:24track minute scale while the outer
08:27border housing the Roman numerals is
08:30the inner square has vertical brushing
08:32that matches the bezel and the rest of
08:35it isn't anything drastic the inner part
08:38of the dial steps down just enough to
08:41convey a sense of depth on close
08:44another departure from the norm is
08:47carte's use of mismatched hands on the
08:49Santos adlc look closely and you'll
08:52notice that the second hand is the only
08:54exposed polish component on this entire
08:56thing saved for the deployment
08:59in contrast the loomed hour and minute
09:01hands are both given the adlc treatment
09:05the aesthetic sort of works sure but I
09:08suspect that the second hand was too
09:10thin to be reliably done in adlc
09:13nonetheless the exposed stainless steel
09:15gives better visibility to the second
09:17hand given the lack of loom
09:21finally we get to the movement all the
09:24large and medium Santos de cartes run on
09:26Cartier's 1847 MC entry-level movement
09:30this was developed by Cartier to slowly
09:32face out their 049 caliber which was
09:39gauging by reactions online a lot of
09:41folks seem to be disappointed by the
09:43Dismal 40 hour power reserve on the 1847
09:47understandable since entry-level watches
09:50such as a Hamilton khaki field now come
09:53with 80 hour power reserves courtesy of
09:57that's double the power reserve for a
09:59mere fraction of the price
10:02I have opened this timepiece up I'll
10:05talk about that later as well in the
10:071847 MC isn't the most finely decorated
10:12so what are its merits
10:15I mentioned earlier that this was
10:17developed by Cartier to be the
10:19replacement for the eta-based 049
10:21caliber I have a Santos galbi extra
10:24large with the 049 inside it and even
10:26after a full service the automatic
10:28winding on that would often be
10:30inadequate for my shamefully sedentary
10:32office lifestyle after a few days
10:35I never encountered this problem with
10:37both of my Santos de cartes the winding
10:40efficiency of the 1847 MC is just so
10:43much better than the o4 knights
10:46another feature that I don't really
10:47understand why carte doesn't talk about
10:49in press releases is the above average
10:52magnetic resistance 1 200 Gauss to be
10:57this is courtesy of a paramagnetic ring
10:59around the movement and not the movement
11:01per se but the figures higher than that
11:04of the first Rolex milgauss's and
11:06definitely worth talking about
11:08the 1847 isn't the most elaborate or
11:11feature-packed of movements but it's
11:14more than etiquette for a daily
11:15Workhorse that you don't baby around
11:18we have monitored its great consistency
11:20over the course of months and both the
11:22shock and magnetic resistance of the
11:24movement serve it well
11:31so as promised here's a quick unboxing
11:33just for you all to see what comes with
11:35the watch for fans of the brand the
11:37Cartier outer and interbox should look
11:39familiar simple gold branding on their
11:43open the outer box by taking its cover
11:48the front side of its lower shelf falls
11:50down for easy access to the inner box
11:53to take the inner box out first
11:56that envelope on the bottom is for the
11:59receipt from the dealer by the way I
12:01want to go over it with you guys since
12:02it isn't really something that's
12:04consistent across purchases
12:06but here's the inner box there's a tiny
12:09gold button on the front side of the
12:11inner box that unlocks the clamshell
12:13press that and the Box opens on its own
12:16you're then greeted by gold branding
12:19inside the lid and black suede material
12:22this is so much better than the
12:24cream-colored faux leather material that
12:26Cartier used to use inside their inner
12:28boxes that material tends to get flaky
12:35lift the two fabric tabs on both sides
12:37of the top shelf to take it off
12:39inside you get a divided bottom layer
12:43the upper right corner houses the
12:45warranty card and the sleeve
12:48contains a simple instruction booklet
12:51and the multilingual invitation to join
12:54the carte Care Program
12:55doing so and registering your timepiece
12:58online extends the warranty to eight
13:00years by the way which is nice let's put
13:02all of these back to where they belong
13:06the bottom half is where they put the
13:10this is the flat black alligator strap
13:12that I mentioned earlier I haven't
13:14opened it yet since I already bought a
13:16slightly rounded black alligator quick
13:18switch strap a few years ago and wanted
13:20to wear that out first
13:22remember that all Santos de cartes
13:25regardless of color or finish should
13:28come with at least two strap sets if
13:30they don't come with a bracelet and just
13:32one set if they do this is something to
13:35keep in mind when you're buying
13:40finally we have this metal tool right
13:43here enclosed in a clear plastic sleeve
13:46I never really understood what it's for
13:49so if anyone has ideas please do share
13:52them in the comments below
14:00with the carte Santos de Cartier adlc so
14:05when I got the watch it was running
14:07around two or three seconds slow each
14:09day while these numbers were well within
14:12chronometer specs I always prefer my
14:14watches to run faster than a little slow
14:17somewhat similar to namaste's philosophy
14:20on timekeeping I wasted no time putting
14:23the watch on the time grapher and
14:24regulating it when we finally came home
14:26from our trip and has reliably gained an
14:29average of 2 seconds a day since then
14:32other than the obvious doorknob or seat
14:34belt I don't really baby my watches at
14:37with this in mind I can say that the
14:40shock and magnetic resistance of the
14:411847 MC movement definitely helped with
14:45consistent time keeping
14:47a swan neck regulator with a sweetened
14:49the deal and made the movements
14:50regulator pretty much impossible to
14:52knock out of position but hey so far so
14:56now how about the adlt Finish
14:58like I said at the start of this video
15:00ablt stands for amorphous Diamond like
15:03carbon so how Diamond like was it I
15:07think there's no better way to explain
15:08this than to show you guys the same two
15:11watches you've been seeing throughout
15:14both the blue and adlc Santos de cartes
15:16get the same treatment from me I'd even
15:19say that I'm less careful with the ablc
15:21one than the blue one since I know in
15:23the back of my mind that it's coated
15:25with something that's supposed to make
15:26its finish more durable
15:30the watch still looks new whereas the
15:33blue Santos de carte already had about a
15:35third of the scratch as you see here
15:37after its first year
15:39for the most part the adlc treatment did
15:42it's not all perfect though
15:45the adlc layer seems to be thinner on
15:48some areas and you'll notice that the
15:50coating on the bezel corner right here
15:52has worn off a little after taking some
15:55still it isn't really obvious most of
15:57the time and only catches your attention
15:59when light hits it at specific angles
16:03as for the rest of the Aesthetics the
16:05stealthy look with the Santos adlcx
16:07suits doesn't really lend itself well to
16:09formal pairings I mean if I wanted to I
16:12could wear it with a suit but there are
16:14better mattress out there
16:15anything more casual than that however
16:18the watch is able to cover
16:20especially with the versatility that a
16:22quick switch system affords it I can
16:24dress it now with a gray suede strap
16:26make it look sharp with some black gator
16:29and cover everything in between with the
16:33so there you have it everything I ever
16:36wanted to know about the Santos de
16:37Cartier adlc when I first considered
16:40adding it to my collection condensed in
16:42video form for all of you to enjoy
