00:09one I'm going to take you through the
00:11basic preferences for this course to get
00:13you up and running we'll also look at
00:16some preferences to help you if you have
00:18a visual disability such as myself or if
00:20you're struggling with the user
00:21interface for freecad and you want to
00:23make it a little bit bigger and a little
00:26bit clearer so I hope you're enjoying
00:28this course and let's have a look how we
00:30set up freead to start our

01:05videos so before we start the course we
01:08need to set some settings through the
01:10preferences these are going to make the
01:12course a lot easier to follow and also
01:14it's going to help with a few other
01:16things as well such as visual
01:17disabilities to set these settings we
01:20got to edit and come down to
01:24preferences our preferences are
01:26displayed and we get to our first page
01:28the general and the general section now
01:31this course is in English but you can
01:33set the language in here along with the
01:36default unit system as standard which is
01:40millimet if you're working in the
01:42Imperial unit system then we can drop
01:44this down and set it within here please
01:47note that this can be accessed from down
01:53well so we can swap in and out of those
02:00the number of decimal places is set to
02:02two this determines the position when
02:05Dimension your geometry well this course
02:08I'll be using the FEMA classic we can
02:10change this to whatever we want in here
02:13we can also add preference packs by the
02:17add or manager if you want to change
02:20theme the size of the toolbar icons I
02:24increase to large this is only for
02:27demonstration purposes and also to help
02:30with visal disabilities such as what I
02:32have myself next we'll move to the
02:37selection in here you'll see enable
02:41pre-election this is the color that is
02:43shown when we pre- select faces that is
02:46when we roll over the faces of an object
02:49those faces will be preh highlighted
02:52including the vertices and the edges
02:55this may cause some headaches or visual
02:57disturbances so I'm going to tone this
03:00down to set it we click on it and coming
03:03in and changing the colors within so if
03:07I pick a ready color here and I hit
03:09okay I can see when I roll over the
03:12edges and the faces that we get this
03:16pre- selection in a different
03:22color we can reset that by coming down
03:24to the bottom and reset paste section
03:28and we get back to what we was before
03:31next is the notification area these are
03:34enabled by default when a notification
03:37is activated by something like a message
03:40or error a small popup window will
03:43appear at the bottom here along with
03:49toolbar which we can click at any time
03:55notification moving on for
03:57notifications and related to the report
04:00view the settings that we're interested
04:02in is to show report view on error and
04:05any of these that say show report view
04:09if you ever used freeat
04:10before then you may have noticed this
04:13panel popping up is quite irritating and
04:16because we've got this notification area
04:19here it's more or less unneeded though
04:21it shows important information it can be
04:24turned off and then notifications used
04:26instead to do that uncheck the show
04:28report View on error and any of the show
04:31report view on warning or normal
04:34messages including log message uncheck
04:37these and just use the notification menu
04:41itself or we can show the panel by
04:45view panels and Report
04:51view so we'll just uncheck that show
04:53report view so they're all
04:56unchecked the next section the display
05:01let's open this up and have a look
05:03within come down to the 3D
05:06View and we have this show coordinate
05:08system in the corner this is the
05:11coordinate system down here we'll
05:14increase the size of
05:15this I'm just going to increase it by
05:22apply you can see it there may be a
05:25little large so we can always take it
05:27and drop it down a bit more that's go
05:34that so you can see the corner system in
05:36the right hand corner we'll be using
05:38this a lot in our modeling especially
05:41when we understand what planes to mirror
05:43across and which planes to orientate to
05:47in the rendering section there is a
05:49setting called marker size at the moment
05:52this is set to 9 pixels this defines the
05:55size of the vertices in the Sketcher and
05:58the tech draw it's also used across some
06:00other workbenches as well we look at the
06:03Sketcher the markers are these points
06:06here so you can see we got a middle
06:07points and the points around the edges
06:11of this rectangle if we add a point as
06:14well it will also be the size of these
06:18points let's change those sizes come out
06:22preferences look at our 3D view look at
06:25the rendering the marker size let up
06:33apply and what you'll see if I move this
06:36over to the right you'll see the marker
06:40within it's up to you what size you want
06:42these but make it comfortable for your
06:48eyes camera type is set to orographic by
06:52default if you're using perspective
06:54rendering then the model will appear as
06:57it would in the real world but it'll
06:59have the same form of distortion where
07:02Parts further away will appear smaller
07:04than the parts closer therefore
07:07perspective modeling is really ideal for
07:09a real world render such as those for
07:11advertisements graphic work or marketing
07:14but not ideal for accurate measurements
07:17orthographic mode doesn't have these
07:20distortions there is another Sketcher
07:22setting that we're going to set if we
07:25come into the Sketcher and come into
07:28display you'll see the font size this is
07:32the font size of the dimension of
07:35constraints so you can see these
07:37Dimensions here it also affects the
07:40constraints themselves so you can see
07:42we've got this little line which denotes
07:44a vertical constraint and this one
07:47denotes a horizontal constraint and we
07:49can see we got symmetry constraints as
07:52well when we change the font size we
07:58those so at 17 at the moment I'm going
08:0324 if I move this to the side and hit
08:07apply we can see the constraints
08:11themselves and the font has increased in
08:14size there are other settings that we
08:16may want to set to increase such things
08:19as vertex size and line size and that's
08:23in the part slart design come into
08:27here and come into shape
08:30appearance we can see that we got the
08:33width and the vertex size in here we can
08:37increase these to make it easier on the
08:39eye to select these also another set
08:42that may help you if you're having
08:44trouble selecting say vertices and edges
08:48if we come out to General and come into
08:51selection we'll see the pick radius that
08:53sits here this can be increased to a
08:57value above the default of five so at
09:00the moment if we have a pck radius of
09:04this and have a look at this shape here
09:07as I come close if I'm within five
09:10pixels of that edge I can highlight
09:13it if I change that pick radius edit
09:17preferences and come into the pick
09:19radius and set this to something like 15
09:23so 15 pixels and okay that when I come
09:27within 15 pixels of that edge you can
09:29see it highlights sooner this will make
09:32your life easier when highlighting the
09:34edges but be aware if we set it too high
09:37then we have to zoom in and then
09:40highlight the edges because we may have
09:42a number of edges close to each other
09:45that may be within our pick
09:47radius so we might find it hard to pick
09:50one over the other please knowe with
09:52some of the settings that I've set the
09:53toolbars themselves may be out of
09:56position compared to the course you may
09:58see more less tools and some of them
10:01will be in a drop down like this which
10:04I'll be moving by dragging the tool down
10:07into new position but we'll go through
10:10that in our next video where we'll look
10:13at changing the panels and the toolbars
