00:05hello everyone today I'm going to be
00:07changing the automatic transmission
00:09fluid on my Hyundai Sonata 2011 it's a 2
00:13T or the turbo the 2-liter turbo engine
00:17I'm not sure if it's the same procedure
00:20for all the transmissions but basically
00:23I went into a lot called up Hyundai they
00:28told me $300 $300 to change my
00:32transmission fluid so I said got to be a
00:34better cheaper solution well the battery
00:36cheaper solution is doing it myself I'm
00:38going to be using the max life full
00:40synthetic let's see multi-vehicle ATF
00:46and this stuff is what is rated for the
00:51Hyundai even says on the back Hyundai
00:54spec see if I can bring that in for you
00:58I'm getting a bit of a shadow there
01:00whole lot ok I don't know if you can
01:04read it but it is this is what they spec
01:06for this car this is $16 16 bucks $17
01:10actually I bought 2 just in case and you
01:14know I may want to do it twice just to
01:16flush it up as it doesn't drain all all
01:19the liquid in the transmission first
01:23time to do it so let's get at it here
01:28all the tools and parts that I used to
01:30change the ATF oil on my cone a sonata
01:342011 2.0 T 2 liter turbo engine might be
01:40the same for the other but I don't have
01:42it so really can't say I would suggest
01:44that you watch the whole video prior to
01:46starting the service so you can figure
01:48out how you're going to do it do you
01:49don't necessarily have to do it how I
01:50did it just make sure that the car is
01:53level when you're draining and filling
01:55the fluid that's really what's important
01:57okay so what do we got we got oil pan
02:00ATF oil I'll put the specs for that in
02:02the description long funnel nice to have
02:07no don't need to have it you can get
02:08away with a smaller one a measuring cup
02:14again nice to have don't need it
02:18Phillips screwdriver the 24 millimeter
02:21saw a Phillips screwdriver 24 millimeter
02:23socket 22 millimeter socket both of
02:25these are 1/2 inch 1/2 inch torque
02:28wrench 1/2 inch ratchet a I used a 3 3/8
02:34extension with a half inch converter on
02:37the end to take the fill hole I'll fill
02:40plug out out a quarter-inch sorry a 3/8
02:45inch ratchet and a quarter inch ratchet
02:48with a 10 millimeter socket a level a
02:53and set of ramps I need to use the ramps
02:57to get underneath the front of the car
02:59and the jack to back to Jack the rear of
03:02the car up and get the card level for
03:06the fluid check okay here's the Hyundai
03:10Sonata 2011 YF 2 2014 trans axle service
03:18adjustment procedure and basically I'm
03:21just putting this on video I'm going to
03:22put the link in the description as well
03:25I just wanted to go through it here so
03:29that you can see it you can see the
03:31pictures so on so forth so I'm going to
03:35slowly scroll through this so you can
03:37see online this is the plastic eyelet as
03:42they call it or I bolt as they call it
03:44and you know here it apparently looks
03:49like it's made out of metal but
03:50regardless it's it's very similar this
03:54is the plastic drain hole or level hole
03:58which we use oil level plug is called
04:01and keep going and that's on the front
04:06of the transmission ok and again it
04:10states horizontal state right in other
04:12words no good look the car has to be
04:15level and all the procedures are here
04:19the tightening torque 32.6 foot-pounds
04:24okay and it says here automatic
04:30the ATF every sixty thousand miles for
04:33severe usage well I would say you know
04:37look at the what they call severe usage
04:40driving in rough road bumpy gravel snowy
04:44unpaved roads driving mountain roads
04:46ascent descent repetition of short
04:48distance driving more than 50% of
04:50operation and heavy traffic during hot
04:52weather well in Texas I would say that
04:56definitely is over this temperature for
04:5950% of the traffic time police taxing
05:02commercial operation trailers and then
05:06it goes into how to remove the oil and
05:12it says fill the oil about five liters
05:13well I could only get four liters into
05:15mine and you know the rest of is in the
05:23video but I just want to show you this
05:25and put it into the video and I will put
05:28this link here into the description
05:32we're looking down into the engine
05:34compartment at this point moment this is
05:37the air intake channel or you know
05:41tunnel if you want to say if you want to
05:43take but anyways this is the air intake
05:45right here and here's the battery there
05:49you can see the fill hole or what they
05:51call the eyelet for the transmission
05:56okay you can't get in there quite you
05:59know easily with a socket to get it up
06:00as you can see I could put a socket
06:02right on no problem there's lots of room
06:03to work there too but you're going to
06:07fill the transmission through that hole
06:09too and getting a funnel down there
06:12unless you use a hose or something it's
06:14going to be a little tight so I'm just
06:15going to take off the air intake here
06:19it's only two bolts one two and then it
06:22should just remove by pulling out in
06:24this direction okay so use your ten
06:27millimeter socket on this bolt here and
06:30this bolt here and then this will remove
06:33in this direction okay bolts are off
06:36these are got rubber grommets on them
06:38here with these shims in the center so
06:41make sure you don't lose those if they
06:43fallout you never know but this one just
06:45lift and pull it up and there you go
06:48that's the ear assembly or the air
06:50intake assembly off and that gives you
06:52much better access to the transmission
06:55so that way now let's look at what we
07:02got this is a view looking down into the
07:05engine compartment now that the air
07:09intake cowling is taken off and it just
07:13just pulls off it's really very easy out
07:15like that but now you can see that you
07:17have full access to that bolt that bolt
07:20right there and put my finger are
07:23pointing to right here
07:24that's the eyelet the inlet hole for the
07:26transmission and where you'll be filling
07:29up the transmission oil from or to at
07:34this point you can see that you can have
07:35you have easy access to a socket there's
07:38lots of room here to work with so that
07:40should be no issue taking that off plus
07:42no problem getting your funnel in there
07:45to put your transmission fluid in there
07:47I think I don't have a transmission
07:49funnel this long a shorter one will do
07:51just as well as long as it fits in there
07:53and as long as you can pour the
07:54transmission fluid in there you'll be
07:56so the next step is to take off the
08:00bottom engine cowling or cover and let's
08:05get at that this bottom panel needs to
08:08be removed from the bottom of the engine
08:09you can see that there's a bunch of 10
08:12millimeter bolts all the way around that
08:13need to come off every single one needs
08:15to come off some people say you have to
08:18take this front panel off I don't
08:19believe so because you can just pull
08:21down on it and get at the front screws
08:22I'll show you that next ok now we're
08:25looking at that panel from the rear of
08:28the car looking towards the front of the
08:30car and this is the front bumper panel
08:33here but as you can see there's bolts
08:36underneath it and that's pretty easy to
08:38just pull that down and put your socket
08:40in there and get those bolts out so that
08:42shouldn't be an issue
08:43after I'm done pulling the panel off
08:45I'll show you all the positions for all
08:47the bolts pretty obvious when you're
08:50doing it but just so you know you know
08:59okay there's the bottom panel there's
09:03the bottom panel removed you'll see that
09:05there's one two three bolts on the
09:08driver's side there's two screws that's
09:12where the Phillips screwdriver came in
09:14over here and also note that all the
09:17bolts are different sizes so make sure
09:19that you keep them well organized so you
09:21know which size goes where back where
09:24there's another one down here on the on
09:29the back passenger side of the panel
09:31another one in the center and two in the
09:34front that we're under the front cowling
09:35but they're easy to get out without
09:37taking that front cowling out and as you
09:39can see those are the longest ones this
09:41one's almost as long and this one's a
09:43little this one's a little shorter so
09:46again make sure you keep your screws and
09:49bolts organized I just put them back in
09:51the holes and put the panel away
09:53carefully then when I put it back
09:55together again I know which size which
09:57bolts go where okay just for everybody's
10:01reference I'm going to zoom in on those
10:06bolts this is the front of the cowling
10:11those are the only black bolts and both
10:14go there and they're the longer ones
10:16we'll go down to this middle and that's
10:20a almost as long not quite as long but
10:22it's not black and down here at the very
10:26end we have a shorter silver bolt there
10:31and I'm just doing this to make sure
10:34that everybody knows what size bolts go
10:36where so next we have the screws that go
10:41into the back there's the two holes and
10:43the two screws there Phillips and then
10:47we have the three identical bolts on the
10:51driver's side of the panel next we're
10:55ready to begin the draining process of
10:58taking the fluid out of the transmission
11:00note that if your engine is hot things
11:03in this area may be hot too the fluid in
11:07we'll be hot as well so be careful with
11:10hot fluids as you might you know injure
11:13yourself so again don't burn yourself
11:18and be careful with hot fluids so let's
11:25there's the fill plug that's the first
11:28thing I needs to come off for the fluid
11:30to drain out so we're going to take that
11:33off and it comes off fairly easy it's
11:39very light it's a plastic plug so put my
11:46extension on that take that off all the
11:47way remember it's made out of plastic so
11:59when you're putting it back on don't
12:00work it on super tight it's just a it's
12:03just a plug there we go there it is out
12:12of the transmission I'd say looks pretty
12:16pretty nice pretty easy to put fluid
12:19back in there it's a very wide spout
12:22it's an old ring bolt so that's great so
12:28make sure your o-rings good and then put
12:30that away someplace clean
12:41okay here's the transmission drain plug
12:44I made a assumption that it was a 22
12:48millimeter it is not it is a 24
12:51millimeter I happen to have one of those
12:53I will help make sure that you get that
12:55start of this video as a notation
12:58okay so 24 millimeter got the pan
13:02underneath we're ready to take that off
13:04we've got the top bolt off the fill plug
13:06so here we go alright so we're draining
13:30out here now notice that this is a
13:32magnetic plug and I can see there's all
13:37sorts of metal stuck to it well that's a
13:39good thing that's what it's supposed to
13:41do it's supposed to take the metal out
13:42of the solution so make sure that you
13:44clean this plug right off and get all
13:45that extra metal off of there this is
13:49actually making me very glad that I'm
13:51taking this fluid out and replacing it
13:57alright I realize at this point that the
14:00car is on the ramps and it's not level
14:02so I'm going to use a jack to lift up
14:07the rear of the car and level it I will
14:09chop the wheels on the front as well to
14:11make sure they don't the car doesn't
14:13roll because I want the transmission
14:16fluid to get out of all I want to get as
14:19much transmission fluid out of it out of
14:20the car as possible and I want the car
14:23to be level when I'm filling it up again
14:25so I'm going to Jack the rear of the car
14:27up and put it on jack stands okay so I
14:30did level out the car I used just a
14:34simple level like this it's magnetic
14:36it's got a magnet on the bottom I had
14:37lying around from Believe It or Not a
14:39flat screen frame install but I put this
14:44on the frame of the car on the rocker
14:46panel or on the box frame on the way in
14:49the middle of the car to show me whether
14:50the car was level or not
14:52and when I did so I did get more fluid
14:55out of the transmission so I would
14:59recommend jacking up the rear of the car
15:01or lovely new car some fashion or
15:03another so let's put the blood back in
15:06now get rid of that a little bit of oil
15:10it's up there nice and clean plug is
15:20nice and clean all this bowl of magnetic
15:24particles are off of it okay and this
15:30goes back on at a torque of oh wait hold
15:32on a second sorry got to show you I
15:37mentioned to you that there is a washer
15:40on this and it looks like going to lumen
15:41on washer and looks fine to me so I'm
15:44going to reuse it if you want to replace
15:46it well water one from Hyundai and
15:48replace it anyways the torque on this
15:52bolt is thirty two point six foot-pounds
15:55thirty two point six foot pounds so I'm
15:58going to use my wrench on that right now
16:01set my torque wrench to twenty-three
16:04all right I got my 24 millimeter on
16:07there and I'm just going to torque this
16:09to thirty two point six lines that click
16:27type of torque wrench salt we're there
16:35thirty two point six so now we've got
16:38the plug back in now we need to put the
16:39fluid back into the transmission and I'm
16:43glad I leveled it but next I'll show you
16:45how to do that okay so now we have the
16:48fluid level plug and that is this
16:51plastic plug right here it's in a
16:55plastic housing as well so it's okay now
16:57all you need to do is turn this
16:59counterclockwise to remove it so we're
17:02and your sockets should fit right in the
17:04center so and once you get it to that
17:14point just turns by hand and pull it up
17:17careful with the dirt around it you
17:20might want to clean carefully around
17:22that don't get any dirt in the hole and
17:27basically what this is is the fluid
17:29level check so what happens here is when
17:32you fill it up with fluid when you get
17:33to the right level it starts to pour out
17:35of here so make sure your pan is
17:37underneath this when you're doing this
17:38next we go up top and start putting
17:41fluid into the transmission until it
17:43comes out here so now we're ready to
17:45fill it and you see the fill hole right
17:47there so I'm putting my funnel straight
17:49into that my long funnel so it's nice
17:53and clean and if you can see down here
17:55that's the overflow opening or port and
18:00when it starts filling a draining out of
18:02there you know you've got enough in
18:04there okay so I'm going to measure it
18:07out and see how much I put in and we'll
18:10go from that okay this will be my first
18:12half liter going in and what you're
18:16looking for is down there the overflow
18:21make sure that it's that you look at it
18:25and make sure that when it starts to
18:27pour out of there that you stop putting
18:28it in so that's half a liter in there
18:40okay I got four liters in there and it
18:44appears to be spilling out at this point
18:46I'm going to follow the procedure for
18:50checking the fluid level and show you
18:52that on video as well with the car flat
18:55on the ground once I properly warm up
19:02the transmission and get the car off the
19:04ramp okay next I'm going to put this oil
19:12plug in the oil level off plug back in
19:16on the side of the transmission you'll
19:19see me doing it down there right going
19:23right in there and it's just the reverse
19:24procedure of taking it out
19:42give me excess oil off there nice and
19:46neat the wine stains on your driveway or
19:51your garage next I'm going to drop this
19:55car off the ramps level it up and then
20:00open this port again actually going to
20:07read the instructions on what to do
20:09all right I'm going to back the car off
20:12the ramps before starting the car make
20:15sure you take the rag that you put into
20:17the air intake hole out you can actually
20:22start the engine and run it without the
20:23cowling in there anyway but you know
20:27make sure you take that off before you
20:29pull off before you start the engine up
20:31okay and they recommend Hyundai I got
20:37the manual here and I'm going to put
20:38this PDF on on the video as well
20:45they recommend that you warm the engine
20:47up and that you get the transmission oil
20:49temperature to 50 to 60 Celsius or 144
20:54sorry 120 to 140 Fahrenheit and it says
20:58with the GDS I figured that is the
21:00device or the electronic sensor that
21:04shows you that then it says shift the
21:06lever slowly from park to drive and then
21:09from drive to park and repeat one more
21:12time at idle okay then it says remove
21:17the oil level plug says lift the vehicle
21:20and remove the oil level plug so I guess
21:23you know it remove the oil level plug
21:27but we are not the lifted to do that you
21:29can do it with on level ground says that
21:32this time the vehicle must be at levels
21:33at the level state so I'm going to do
21:35that if the oil flows out from the
21:37overflow plug in a thin steady stream
21:39the oil is correct level and is correct
21:43then finish the procedure and tighten
21:45the oil plug okay so I'm going to also
21:49put my bolt back into the oil filler
21:52hole down here so let's just do that
21:56right now there we go
22:05and again you can use just your rent
22:08your socket driver on that I'm going to
22:11do that sure you can't see thing they're
22:18whole lot there it is right down there
22:25so I'll put my wrench on it wears or
22:30fortunately my and camera angle is going
22:33to cover that but basically it goes in
22:35there this is where the extension comes
22:45in handy I'll use it yeah it just slips
23:01out of there when it gets tight anyway
23:03I'm going to use the point two on it and
23:12again it's just not not tight
23:14there's the 22 fits on a perfect that's
23:19good it is a plastic block I suspect
23:24that I'll probably have to take that off
23:26again down there there it is right there
23:30but we'll see when I get the card level
23:32and I pull the drain plug sorry the
23:35level plug out and see if it actually
23:36drains out first I'm going to warm up
23:39the engine ill I follow the procedure
23:44given to me by Hyundai which is warm up
23:49the engine warm up the transmission put
23:52it into drive sorry at the park and then
23:55it's a drive while the engine is idling
23:56and then back into drive and into Park
24:00you know a few times you know at idle
24:05and good enough now I'm going to take
24:09the top plug off and the bottom drain
24:12plug down here car is now level on the
24:16ground it's a it's on my level
24:20sorry garage so it's both wheels are on
24:23the on the ground at this point and so
24:26we're going to check to see if the oil
24:28flows out if it doesn't flow out I'm
24:30going to add more if it does flow on I'm
24:32going to let it flow out until it stops
24:34that will mean that it's a correct level
24:38so we need to 22 it 22 millimeter socket
24:48and your three-quarter-inch sorry so
24:53let's start with the fill plug here I'm
25:02sorry if I'm in the way of the shot but
25:04it's really the only way I can get this
25:05done you go once you get it loose it's
25:13pretty basic pretty easy to pull off and
25:19I'm doing this because I want the air to
25:22flow through it when I take the another
25:28plug off okay so next let's take the
25:34level plug off if I can do it from up
25:39I remember my engines hot at this point
25:41yours will be too so be careful I'll do
25:58make sure your fans underneath
26:17and a small stream is coming out which
26:22is good I'm going to let that drip out
26:32and when it's done dripping out I'm
26:34going to put the plug back in put it
26:37back up on the rafts and put the bottom
26:40cowling on and the air intake air intake
26:47cowling back on as well okay once again
26:50I wanted to show you again
26:52there you can actually get a feel for
26:54the color that's coming out of it it's
26:55slightly brownish it should be reddish
26:57but there's brown in it so basically
27:01it's dirty even though I just replaced
27:03four liters of it so you can imagine how
27:05the how dirty the original four liters
27:08were and this is done at sixty thousand
27:12who and I says that this never needs to
27:15be done if the car is not driven in
27:17adverse conditions well if you look at
27:20what they described as adverse
27:21conditions most people are driving and
27:23adverse conditions especially for living
27:25in Texas because you're doing a lot of
27:27hot weather driving so like I said look
27:32at that color I'm going to drive around
27:34a week with this current or matte oil in
27:37in this transmission just to get it all
27:40nice and basically uniform and then I'm
27:46going to drain it again and that should
27:49help to clean it up some more next so at
27:53this point I'm just going to put the
27:54plugs back in put the bottom cowling
27:59back on and the air intake scoop our
28:03cowling back on as well and then you're
28:06done that's it for my video thank you
