00:07that you need to know about
00:09is social media now you might hate
00:11social media or you might love it but
00:13either way it is a tool for you to use
00:15to get what you want that being
00:17recognition and financial stability so i
00:19want you to pick the platform you love
00:21the most or hate the least and run with
00:23it okay but how do i post good
00:26consistent content without taking time
00:29away from making my art and how do i
00:32even grow on social media fighting the
00:34algorithm and keeping up to date feels
00:37impossible i get where you're coming
00:39from but social media is a tool that can
00:41be used both ways both as a means of
00:44marketing and as a means of
00:46accountability the benefit of posting on
00:47a platform like youtube is that you can
00:49use videos that you post online as an
00:52excuse to work on your goals as an
00:54artist i don't just use youtube as a
00:56means of growing my income and building
00:58awareness for who i am as an artist but
01:00i also use videos to work on drawing
01:03heads portrait drawing i also use videos
01:05to try acrylic painting and oil painting
01:08you can post vlogs and painting
01:10practices you don't have to make content
01:12like anyone else makes content there are
01:14plenty of creators out there i know one
01:16personally that just post painting
01:18processes and a voiceover and make tens
01:21of thousands of dollars every month from
01:23their paid products and the other stuff
01:25they have going on with their art career
01:26which we will cover later in phase three
01:29but all you need to do is record the
01:32process as for how to make quality
01:34content i think good lighting good audio
01:36and a good story are really the
01:37fundamentals for success if you have
01:39that you are golden content creation can
01:41really be as complicated as you want it
01:44to be you can make really simple videos
01:46or you can make really in-depth videos
01:48like i make you can make content however
01:50you want to make content everything is
01:52up to you so i recommend that you pick
01:54one to two platforms and just post just
01:57and then once you have a good handle on
01:59the basics of creation that's where
02:02strategy comes in there are two things
02:04that you need to know to succeed on
02:06virtually any social media platform the
02:08first is what the community is like that
02:10you want to be a part of who are the
02:12main players in the community people
02:15like lee ellison radio rahman jazza for
02:17example slu those are big creators in
02:20the art community you want to figure out
02:23how they make their content what tropes
02:25do they use what kind of lighting do
02:26they have what are their camera angles
02:28what camera gear do they use and then
02:29you're also going to want to start
02:31paying attention to the current trends
02:32in your community you want to live and
02:34breathe the niche that you want to enter
02:36online and the second thing that you
02:39need to know arguably the most important
02:42is what sets you apart from all of those
02:45other creators every single content
02:47creator is unique everyone has a brand a
02:50look a specialty this is also something
02:52that sometimes called a comparative
02:54advantage what do you have that all of
02:57those other creators don't what unique
03:00outlook or perspective or skills or
03:02knowledge set you a part in your content
03:05what can you do to take the niche to a
03:07new level how can you present new
03:09information or a new approach this might
03:12be an editing style it might be
03:14the same content presented in a more
03:16engaging way a thing always said in
03:18marketing is that you can either be the
03:19first the best or different the first
03:22and the best are really hard to achieve
03:24especially as a beginner there are
03:26probably already lots of people in your
03:27niche but how can you be different
03:29that's what you want to figure out let's
03:31look at my content as an example i don't
03:33just post studio vlogs and painting
03:36processes but i'm also really into the
03:39data the numbers i post content about
03:41entrepreneurship social media growth and
03:43how to start making money as an artist
03:45that is information that a lot of other
03:47art youtubers really share and i'm more
03:50transparent than a lot of other creators
03:52i post like exactly the numbers of how
03:54much money i've been making as i
03:56progress in my art career because i want
03:59this whole channel to exist as a
04:01resource for you i want you to start
04:03building your art career and then being
04:04able to look back on all of the videos
04:06in this channel to see exactly what i've
04:09done i am not just telling you the
04:10roadmap that i'm using right now but
04:13all of the videos on my channel exist as
04:16like a real life proof of the road map
04:19as it developed my career and that is my
04:21comparative advantage my willingness to
04:24share what other creators don't and my
04:26overarching focus on strategy when i was
04:29just starting out i really wanted
04:30information on how much money i could
04:32make as an artist but there weren't a
04:34lot of videos out there especially for
04:36the stuff that i wanted to make so i
04:38noticed a gap in the market and i filled
04:40it with my own content and once you've
04:42identified your comparative advantage
04:44and your identity as an artist and a
04:46creator it's really just a matter of
04:48time of making killer content and being
04:50patient it took me six months to reach
04:53100 subscribers here on youtube and over
04:55a year and a half to reach 1000 but ever
04:58since hitting 1000 in september my
05:00channel's been growing really well ever
05:02since so just stick in there be patient
05:05but i actually have a little bit of a
05:07confession to make because you see
05:09when i mentioned that roadmap before
05:12i've actually been guiding you along
05:13this roadmap the entire time
05:16and we're on phase three phase one was
05:19what i like to call the starting out
05:20phase or more absolutely getting your
05:22 together you're figuring out how
05:24you want to market yourself be it on
05:25social media or some other way like in
05:28person through conventions or on a blog
05:30and you just start doing it phase two is
05:32the crucial strategy phase this
05:35is when you're going to want to start
05:36developing a coherent plan for your
05:39overall marketing strategy you want to
05:41figure out who you are as a creator who
05:43you are as an artist and what your
05:45comparative advantage is for your
05:46business so this is the part where you
05:48start thinking about making money now
05:50there are tons of ways of making money
05:52as an artist you could go the
05:54traditional route of having your work in
05:56galleries or you could sell prints
05:58originals or whatever you'd like in an
05:59online shop you can also sell a course
06:01to places like skillshare you could have
06:03your work in art fairs uh conventions
06:06i don't know like restaurants cafes
06:08boutiques i mean the sky is the limit
06:10you can do whatever you want but that
06:13being said i highly recommend you start
06:17out with a couple of passive income
06:18streams passive income streams are not
06:21directly linked to your creative output
06:24you basically make them or set them up
06:26once they make money in the background
06:27this is stuff like youtube adsense it
06:30could also be a skillshare course or
06:32digital products these are easier income
06:35streams to set up and they don't require
06:37a lot of active work from you after you
06:39get them going this is a really great
06:40way to have money trickling in while you
06:43keep working on your marketing strategy
06:44and start building out other more active
06:46income streams that require more
06:48attention like an online shop or trying
06:50to get your work an exhibition or a
06:52gallery once you have some smaller
06:53income streams set up and a little bit
06:55here and there trickling in add in
06:57another one maybe a patreon or an online
07:00shop just keep adding income streams
07:02making sure to have a healthy balance of
07:04active and passive until you have enough
07:06to make ends meet okay this might be
07:09starting to sound a little bit
07:10overwhelming and like a lot of things to

08:08and it's time consuming to maintain so
08:11you can sell digital and physical
08:13products directly on your koji profile
08:14you can take commissions you can take
08:16donations you can take tips you can
08:18again build an email list and so much
08:21more koji has hundreds of mini apps on
08:23their marketplace i don't even have time
08:26to talk about them all from being 100
08:27honest but there is limitless potential

08:54you're in phase three
08:56you're gonna have a lot of stuff going
08:58and the time that you have to make art
09:00might take a hit trust me i know
09:04but at this point you probably have a
09:06fairly solid marketing strategy you are
09:08used to posting on social media and you
09:10have a good grasp of what you're doing
09:13this is when you should start
09:14considering scaling back the quantity of
09:16your content and increasing the quality
09:18so this might totally be a hot take but
09:21i would argue that the artists with the
09:23best marketing strategies are the ones
09:25that make you drop everything when they
09:27release a new exhibition or post a new
09:29video you drop everything that you're
09:31doing and you cherish their work like a
09:33fine wine it is an event when they do
09:36something and then they off for
09:38three months and you miss them with
09:41social media we can get a little bit of
09:43everything all of the time there is an
09:46endless sea of content always at the
09:49ready but here's the thing art is not
09:53the goal here remember
09:55is to launch your art career not to
09:58become a content creator there is a
10:00difference we are using social media as
10:02a tool to get what we want recognition
10:05and financial stability but you don't
10:07have to use social media like everyone
10:11the drop model the posting schedule for
10:13artists should be different than other
10:16content creators we are a different
10:18class of person we are not a lifestyle
10:20vlogger or a tech reviewer it takes time
10:23to make what we make
10:25and we should give that the respect that
10:27it deserves so don't be afraid to post
10:31regularly make your art an event that
10:34people stop what they're doing to go and
10:36experience and now we're in phase four
10:39expanding remember you do not own the
10:42social media platforms or the art
10:44galleries or conventions or art fairs
10:46you sell your work at they could vanish
10:48at any moment phase four is all about
10:51cementing your career to actually have a
10:54stable income for the rest of your life
10:58you want this student you can retire on
11:00okay internet careers burnout they're
11:02short they're fast you want to surpass
11:05that you want to exist beyond that
11:08and you know how you do that
11:10an email list an email list is literally
11:13the holy grail of marketing okay
11:16an email list is a direct line of
11:18connection to your most engaged
11:21followers that email list that will live
11:24far beyond the lifespan of a social
11:27media platform okay youtube might go
11:29down tomorrow but email lists baby those
11:32are forever okay and you don't need
11:33anything special to start building an
11:36i build mine through koji and my website
11:39two great options but i'm calling phase
11:42four the expansion phase because it
11:44really is all about direct expansion you
11:47are not only expanding your longevity by
11:49building an email list but you also want
11:50to branch out and get involved in your
11:52community this might look like being
11:53interviewed on a podcast starting a
11:57collaborating with other artists in your
11:59niche you want to spread the word and
12:01spread the brand awareness of you out
12:03into the world and at this point you're
12:06probably already well on your way to
12:08building an art career that will last
12:12that will guide you through your entire
12:15your art will change and evolve but
12:17email lists and social media platforms
12:20they will follow you to the end
12:23and at this point you have built a
12:25career that does not rely on you being
12:27available 24 7 and you probably have
12:30more time for your creative practice
12:32than you ever have before
12:36that is literally the dream
12:39does this cover everything
