00:29photographers and meeting new
00:31photographers photography for me has
00:35where it's not just something that i
00:36practice and do by myself but it's
00:38connected me to a group of just awesome
00:43that's why you saw ethan at the
00:45beginning of this video him and i've
00:46been talking on instagram i think for a
00:48year now at this point we finally got
00:51together a few weeks ago and the first
00:54conversation that we had it you know
00:56i'll just show you i'll just show you
00:58just for the for the sake of the
00:59audience uh nikon z6 with the 70 to 200
01:02and i have a 50 mil prime in there and a
01:05we basically brought the exact same kit
01:07except i brought the rf version for the
01:08canon if it's not about what camera do
01:10you shoot with the following question is
01:12always what lenses did you bring or what
01:15lenses are you using and i figured i'd
01:17make this video to actually talk about
01:19the three lenses that i have been using
01:21the most now over the last probably six
01:24months or so because it's kind of like
01:28but there's some modifications there's
01:29some differences and there's actually
01:31one lens that i kind of wish
01:34i got a different version of it when i
01:36initially bought it but i will hold that
01:38to the end and maybe this will help you
01:40decide what lens you want to purchase
01:42next or what kind of kit you want to
01:43build out for your photography needs i'm
01:46just going to get right into it the uh
01:49the lens that gets me the most work
01:51makes me like the vast majority of my
01:52money which if you would ask me that
01:56uh if this lens if i thought this lens
01:58would be the lens that would be doing
02:00all that heavy lifting i would have been
02:02like no you're crazy this is like a
02:04zoom lens right it's like one of the
02:06canon rf white lenses this is the rf 70
02:09to 200 f28 i've already made a video
02:12about this on my channel i titled it i
02:14think the epic travel photography lens
02:17yeah that's basically what this is what
02:19i didn't know about this lens that i
02:20wish i knew two years ago when i first
02:22started out because i think this is
02:24one of the more recent lenses that i
02:26purchased in the last year it was not
02:28the first lens that i purchased and i
02:29was actually really hesitant to purchase
02:30it because i thought it would be really
02:32like a niche lens but now over the last
02:35six i think i've actually had it for
02:36maybe almost a year now this lens has
02:38pulled its weight and more first off
02:41when it comes to shooting brands and
02:43people and in environments this lens
02:46absolutely rocks that order like every
02:48time i shoot with this lens people ask
02:49me like how did you get this shot how
02:52how did this come to be and dang like
02:55these are the shots that i find
02:57stop clients in their tracks stop other
02:59creators in their tracks and and make
03:00them really go like oh okay um
03:03yeah i want more of that please some of
03:05these shots include like the shots that
03:07i did with my buddy sam for a commercial
03:09that he was directing uh some shots that
03:11i did with my friend chuck the crocodile
03:15um my buddy cody cody
03:18go follow i'm gonna link all these guys
03:20down below but even ethan some of the
03:22shots that i took or if you guys saw the
03:24sequence of shots that i posted to
03:25instagram earlier this week or last week
03:27or whenever you're watching this i'll
03:29link it down below all of that whole
03:31sequence that entire post that i did of
03:34sort of that whole day with ethan ended
03:36up actually all being the stuff that i
03:37shot on this 70 to 200. but this lens
03:40isn't just for the sort of punchy
03:42really like focal compressed shots of
03:45people i mean that's what it does really
03:47well but i find that like in certain
03:50scenarios this ends up being my favorite
03:51landscape lens as well i've shot some of
03:54my most favorite landscape shots with
03:56this lens i mean laguna beach
03:59up here in the pnw i've been able to do
04:01so many awesome shots with this lens and
04:04this lens is actually
04:06pulled double duty maybe even triple
04:09with this lens i've forgotten the 85 one
04:12two which is an incredible lens but it's
04:14very narrowly focused at
04:16sort of that portraiture angle of things
04:18i've kind of held off on buying the 100
04:20millimeter macro because i've been able
04:22to get some really great
04:25100 millimeter f28 compression i know it
04:28doesn't have the magnification part of
04:30it but doing stuff like edc shots or
04:32doing things like more detail shots uh
04:35this lens also does that as well you can
04:37also love the like trees and the fog pnw
04:40kind of shots that you can get with this
04:42and especially combined with the r5
04:44being able to crop in on that 45
04:48that's also kind of helped me hold off
04:49on getting the 100 to 500 so really this
04:52lens has sort of like
04:55i guess the 100 to 500 100 ml macro the
04:5885 this lens en ended up being just such
05:01a value house a value house that is a
05:04that's a interesting choice of words
05:06stephen that's not on the script
05:09but it is it's like this lens has given
05:11me probably the most value of my entire
05:13kit i'm leading i'm leading the charge
05:15i'm leading the video with like the i
05:17think the lens that like
05:21this is it so that's why it has a place
05:23in the kit this is actually the lens
05:25i pretty much don't go anywhere without
05:27the one place recently i think in the
05:29last six months that i did not take it
05:31to was on the mexico trip to morelos and
05:34i instantly regretted it because when i
05:36took that shot of popo got the petal
05:40i had to do it with the 50 mil
05:42wasn't the same i'm coming back pablo
05:44got the petal i'm bringing this
05:46now at the center of this kit the rf
05:49trinity you should actually buy
05:51is the canon rf 50 mil you guys heard me
05:54talk about this i think it was funny
05:56that ethan had basically the exact same
05:58kit that i did the rf50 mill one two is
06:01i think canon's best rf prime so far i'm
06:04still waiting for the 35 millimeter f12
06:07i'd really love to see that lens
06:16is absolutely amazing this is the lens
06:19that behind the 70-200 has gotten me
06:22probably the most work and also produced
06:24the most value just kind of second only
06:28the 70-200 not only has it been great
06:30for some of these like photo and
06:32lifestyle shots for different brands
06:34that i've worked with some of my
06:36favorite thumbnails that i've shot for
06:38this channel like the edc video that i
06:40did this past year or the moment cp
06:43filter video that i did this past year
06:45both of those were shot on this 50
06:48millimeter lens i will say though this
06:51lens is highly underrated for landscapes
06:53as well there's a little bit of
06:55compression because it is 50 but if you
06:57really need to like air out the space
06:59and just have something that feels big
07:01still without going maybe down to like a
07:0415 to 35 or 14 to 35 this lens still
07:07gets the job done i'll show you guys a
07:09few shots here of some of the shots that
07:11i've been able to do on the 50 that look
07:1650 or not as compressed as 50 but i find
07:19especially out here in the pnw and even
07:22down on some of the travels in mexico
07:23and some of the other places that we've
07:25been this particular 50 millimeter prime
07:28has just done so well but the thing that
07:31it does absolutely shine at is the that
07:34portraiture that product photography and
07:37i will say this though it's kind of been
07:38a fun lens to just take around and just
07:41have on the camera especially if i'm not
07:44shooting video and i just want to say
07:46you know i'm going to go out and just
07:47shoot photos today of whatever it is
07:49we're doing this lens has ended up being
07:52like my favorite lens to sort of just
07:54take around and take photos with because
07:55i'm not changing i'm not zooming you
07:58know i'm not really thinking about
07:59anything it's like that fixed focal
08:01length prime feeling you get out there
08:03you take photos and they look great they
08:05look awesome so as far as the rf kit
08:08goes what does this compete with i
08:10already made a whole video talking about
08:11the 24 to 70 and the 28 to 70 for the rf
08:15mount if you haven't seen it for some
08:17reason i will link it down below so you
08:18can check it out i ended up choosing the
08:2024 to 70. it was more versatile for my
08:22needs as a hybrid shooter doing both
08:24photo and video again i don't shoot
08:26weddings and i don't really do out and
08:28out portraiture for my business for my
08:32that lens didn't make sense for me but
08:38nothing beats a prime i know people want
08:40to talk about the 28 to 70 being a prime
08:42killer it's not and as good as the 24 to
08:47having something that goes f1 2 having
08:50something that is a prime having
08:52something that's native made by canon so
08:54canon glass on a canon body there's
08:56something that's just a step up
08:58here i think with this lens now that
09:00doesn't mean to say that like i think
09:02sigma makes great lenses
09:04tam i've seen some of the tamron stuff
09:06even if you go back to like older ef
09:08class and just adapt that onto your r5 i
09:10think that's a great way to get
09:12really awesome primes on
09:14your rf mount body at the end of the day
09:17centerfold on the rf platform i think
09:19the 50 mil is the thing that you want
09:22sitting in there especially having the
09:25on one end which i'm kind of giving away
09:26with the next lenses i should put this
09:28over here so i can actually talk about
09:30it and the final lens for my
09:33sort of trinity carry that i have is the
09:3615 to 35 f28 this is actually the 24 to
09:4070 because the 15 to 35 is what's
09:43shooting this video but there's sort of
09:45a twist to this lens and and i'll
09:47explain it to you here
09:49first of all the 15 to 35 has been my
09:52most shot with lens when i actually
09:54pulled photos for this video to look
09:58you know what are some of my best shots
09:59what are some of my favorite shots over
10:01the last year or so shooting on this r5
10:04and with this glass hands down like the
10:10is the lens that i've shot the most
10:13photos with and had the most favorites
10:15that i pulled in to like curate for this
10:18video i used this lens for the
10:20self-portrait project that i did uh last
10:22year i used this lens
10:24for the oregon coast trip that i did
10:27with my wife and my sister-in-law i used
10:29this lens just a ton on the glacier trip
10:31with cody this one's got a a massive
10:34workout in the seattle trilogy vlog that
10:36i did with sam and this lens pulled
10:39heavy weight over de los muertos in
10:41mexico and all the stuff we did around
10:43mexico city this lens is like the
10:46champion lens of my kit it's my favorite
10:47lens whether you need to take portraits
10:49of people at like 35 or you're doing big
10:52landscapes all the way out at 15 or some
10:54of these more like detail shots or even
10:56more just sort of like establishing
10:58shots like this lens just does so much
11:02you want to talk thumbnails like
11:04some of my favorite thumbnails also have
11:06been taken with this lens i think this
11:08was the first lens that i bought for
11:11this camera now i did mention that the
11:1324 to 105 f4 is like i think that's the
11:16first lens everyone should buy that was
11:17the first lens we got back when my wife
11:19got the r and i was kind of playing with
11:21the r and and that lens i think is
11:23probably the first lens you should buy
11:25but if you're looking to build out like
11:26a trilogy kit you would be hard-pressed
11:28to do better than the 15 to 35. with
11:32that said there's i think
11:34two things to consider with the 15 to 35
11:38had i been making this purchase decision
11:43i don't think i would have bought the 15
11:44to 35 as much as i love all the photos
11:47as much as all the videos that were shot
11:49on this channel now over the last year
11:51and some change have been done through
11:52this lens this lens is is it the two
11:55things that i would consider is one the
11:57price yes you're paying a lot i think
11:59well over two thousand dollars for this
12:01particular lens when you look at that
12:03price especially compared to some of
12:04these other lenses where like the 50 mil
12:07really does have to compete with that 28
12:09to 70 with the 24 to 70. and the 7200 is
12:13sort of pulling this triple duty against
12:14the 100 mil macro and the 85s and and
12:18even the 100 to 500 the 15 to 35 for me
12:22kind of really only competes with the 35
12:25mil prime or maybe if i wanted a 24 mil
12:27prime uh both of which canada doesn't
12:29offer in rf versions yet and it sort of
12:32has this little brother which is the 14
12:34to 35 f4 now what i can tell you about
12:38here is i i shoot these videos in this
12:41studio at f4 because i want that focal
12:44plane to be wide enough to allow me to
12:46mostly stay in focus obviously if i
12:51but even at f28 i find is a little too
12:53tight of a focal plane to be doing video
12:56in here i'd much rather have the f4 in
12:58here when it comes to video most of my
13:00video on this camera is shot at f4 if
13:03i'm outside maybe i'm shooting like f56
13:06maybe f8 depending on if i have a vnd or
13:09just like a cp filter on and then when
13:11it comes to photography as much as i
13:13love a lot of these photos so many of
13:16them were shot at f4 f56 i'm not
13:19actually shooting a lot at f 2 8 with my
13:23photography with this wide
13:26of a lens choice or with this particular
13:28focal length because
13:30it's one of those focal lengths where
13:32you want stuff in focus you want to be
13:34able to see the surroundings and sort of
13:36get immersed in what's going on and even
13:42if you're shooting at such a depth
13:44remember that bokeh that nice soft blur
13:47that everyone likes is not just a
13:49function of aperture it's a function of
13:51aperture and focal length and then
13:54applied to your to your composition so
13:58shallow as you go to as far
14:01deep as you go all of that is a function
14:03of how much blur you're going to get and
14:05if you're taking a 35 out or even
14:07shooting as wide as 15 and you're gonna
14:09go shoot on a frozen lake you're gonna
14:12go shoot out over the jungles of mexico
14:14you're going to still get plenty of blur
14:17with f4 or even f56 so i think if i was
14:21going to make this purchase again today
14:23i'm not going to sell this lens this
14:25lens is awesome but if i were someone
14:27who needed to make this purchase
14:28decision today in 2022 i would probably
14:30go with the 14 to 35 f4 save like a
14:34thousand dollars on buying that lens and
14:37then apply that to maybe getting like a
14:42you know 35 1 4 and then have an extra
14:46or apply that to being able to get the
14:49f1 2 or the 70 to 200 i will also say
14:53this the one outlier of the 15 to 35 now
15:00is the fact that it's an 82 millimeter
15:04and the other two lenses are 77 and if
15:06you don't want to be adapting your
15:08filters all the time
15:09the 14 to 35 is also a 77 millimeter
15:13thread mount so you can buy one set of
15:14filters all 77 millimeters for your vmds
15:18your polarizers uv filters maybe if you
15:20want more like cinema like anamorphic
15:23flare type stuff or some of like the
15:25mist filters that are out there having
15:27to only buy one set and not having to
15:29like go through the hassle of adapting
15:31to different lenses as you you know work
15:34um that's kind of nice i i really like
15:36that so i would like to have the 14 to
15:3835 for those reasons you could save a
15:42little bit you're still covering i think
15:43all the aperture that you want for that
15:47um and and you could save some hassle
15:49with the um the filter stuff so let me
