00:13today we're going to touch on some
00:14questions and a few people have asked
00:16and and let focus a little bit on dhabi
00:18vision we're gonna bring in the expert
00:26everyone knows Andrew Andrew come on in
00:29hi folks how's it going welcome back to
00:32home theater engineering YouTube channel
00:34and thanks to the introduction enzo so
00:37today we're just going to review a
00:39little bit of part one where we talked
00:40about the best settings for apple TV 4k
00:42but especially today Dolby vision now
00:46before we get going one of the important
00:48things is to validate that your TV will
00:51do high dynamic range and that it will
00:53do dog vision how do we do that Andrew
00:55okay so we'll go into the menu alright
00:57and we will just force HDR first so you
01:00know format yep I'm just gonna go ahead
01:04yeah alright now what you're seeing this
01:07blank this is actually a good thing it's
01:08much faster on a television but most
01:10projectors take some time to do what we
01:12call the handshake this is this
01:14projector setting itself up to change
01:16format from standard dynamic range to
01:19higher dynamic range or to Dolby vision
01:20so what happened there we got a window
01:24that popped up that said yes and we
01:26accepted the change and we now have 4k
01:29HDR also we've got a special device
01:32plugged in here that tells us that HDR
01:34is working so this is a thing called an
01:37HD fury and in here this gives us all
01:42the information as to what's going on
01:43what's being sent and what's being
01:44received the eve eve information this is
01:47the information ya extended display
01:50information to data so at the moment we
01:56can see we're now running HDR now we're
01:57going to go back and we're gonna try to
01:59all be vision so let's just pop up and
02:01see if door b vision works now just for
02:04clarity here yes we're using a projector
02:06no projectors don't support Dolby vision
02:08I don't want to confuse the issue you
02:11need to make sure that your TV supports
02:14we're using a special device here to
02:16allow us to enable the revision to do
02:18this demonstration on a projector but no
02:20projectors generally don't support the
02:22Olbia vision you do need to make some
02:24changes that's an entirely different
02:25video folks ok so we now have this flag
02:28that says here D V Dolby vision right so
02:32it's accepted gold.we vision with now
02:34check that our TV or projector accepts
02:37high dynamic range HDR and we've checked
02:39it supports Dolby vision alright
02:42that said we can now go to the proper
02:44settings so what we're gonna do is go
02:45back to our settings again so I've put
02:48it on to 4k SDR now yeah now the menus
02:52are in standard dynamic range if you
02:54want them to look really colorful and
02:55great you need to be in SDR so we've got
02:58and we'll just review these 4k SDR you
03:01saw us changing the settings there HDMI
03:04output Y CBC I just leave it on there
03:06chromophore for for just press on that
03:09for a second right you've got different
03:11options here you might see 4 2 2 4 2 0 4
03:144 4 the higher the number the better
03:17unless you're getting weird results and
03:19then take it back down to the lower
03:21number now just for general information
03:23most of the content you'll ever see is
03:25actually in 4 to 0 but you can send it
03:28to your TV or projector in a higher
03:31detail basically so here we've selected
03:344 4 4 we're back out of here most
03:37important of all select match dynamic
03:40range so this will now match whether
03:43it's SDR HDR or Dolby vision and max
03:45framerate that's going to be whether
03:47it's 24 Hertz or 60 Hertz and this is
03:49where the catch is because Apple TV out
03:52of the box forces 4k HDR and the match
03:55content is off and off yes and sometimes
03:58even if you've done an update or there's
04:00been a loss of power or you've unplugged
04:01it it will always revert back to the old
04:04settings so you've got to keep an eye on
04:06this quite often that's absolutely
04:08correct and even whilst we're setting up
04:09for the video today if we unplug and
04:11plug the HDMI cable and use different
04:13devices the Apple TV keeps defaulting
04:16back to HDR so let's just confirm that
04:19we'll just go back for a second I just
04:21want to confirm in the settings one more
04:26so it's really important you understand
04:294k SDR is what you need match range and
04:32framerate is what you need after you've
04:34proven that you can do HDR on television
04:37okay so this is the optimum settings for
04:39your Apple TV absolutely now let's go
04:41what we're gonna do Enzo's going to find
04:43some content that we know is in standard
04:46dynamic range so we'll use a karyotyping
04:49movie we'll go down to sanctum not that
04:52I enjoy cave diving okay there it is on
04:56tangled is that yours so we're gonna
05:01play this this is just an HD movie and
05:03we'll just show you the data that we get
05:05to confer so by matching framerate and
05:08content if it's an SD movie it's an SD
05:11picture it doesn't force HDR that's
05:14now we may not see that on this one
05:17because we've been staying in the SDR
05:18color space we'll see what pops up here
05:21we go okay PT 709 that's the 709 color
05:25space 8-bit standard dynamic range we
05:28are now watching a movie in SDR all
05:30right that's exactly as it should be now
05:32we're gonna pop out of that movie now
05:36we're gonna find an HDR movie not a door
05:38B vision movie but an HDR movie okay
05:46these blank periods that you're seeing
05:48these are the handshake periods quite
05:50fast on the TV can take quite some time
05:54just like HDMI right so now we're
05:58playing a movie that we know is HDR high
06:00dynamic range here we go again another
06:06handshake is the projector reconfigures
06:08itself in terms of things like light
06:10output and dynamic range for this
06:14content and here we go so now we're in
06:16the BT 2020 color space doesn't miss
06:19mean that you're receiving BT 2020 color
06:21by the way that's just the container
06:23it's sent in 12 bit now high dynamic
06:27range and that's exactly what this movie
06:30is designed to be all right so we know
06:33that HDR is working let's go back again
06:39which is a fork a film that does bobby
06:43vision there's quite a few of them now
06:44which is a good thing it's interesting
06:46because as Enzo and I was setting up to
06:48do this video we were amazed at how much
06:50content was going on and we were looking
06:51at some of the discs coming out that are
06:53actually aren't marked as Dolby vision
06:54but have Dolby vision content and that's
06:56quite interesting okay so now that we
06:59know this is a Dolby vision movie and we
07:03are going to play that and for those of
07:07you are saying you're using Dolby vision
07:09or a projector yes we are again that's
07:11another video don't worry about that the
07:13fact of the matter is we're showing the
07:14Apple TV we'll switch to the real
07:16correct format even when it's set on
07:18standard dynamic range so now we have DV
07:23okay BT 2020 color space so we are
07:26successfully getting the standard
07:28dynamic range we are successfully
07:30getting higher dynamic range and we are
07:32successfully getting Dolby vision all
07:35with your Apple TV set to 4k SDR and
07:38we'll go back to the settings one more
07:40time just to prove that that's
07:41absolutely what's happening again you
07:44see the menu right is in standard
07:47dynamic range and if you want these
07:49colors to really pop that's what you
07:51need to be in so here we go just a quick
07:54review we are set to 4k SDR we know it's
07:58counterintuitive but this is the way it
08:00goes that's the foundations we've got to
08:03get the foundations right yeah and then
08:05most importantly match range match
08:07framerate then the Apple TV looks at the
08:09content says what is the hot dynamic
08:12range and matches and what is the the
08:14framerate and it matches it and it sends
08:17it to your system okay and the default
08:20is SDR which is what the Apple TV menu
08:23is in so if you want all your colors to
08:25pop and look great then fine
08:27now we've had a few people comment that
08:29they've done this and it looks strange
08:31if it's looking washed out and faded
08:33there are several reasons one is that
08:36your HDR is not working properly or your
08:38Dolby vision is not working properly or
08:40you haven't used the right cable there's
08:42a whole lot of reasons Internet
08:44bandwidth probably not so much that
08:46would more be a change in resolution and
08:48picture quality but ultimately these
08:52proven them we've got the eated
08:54information here we know this is an
08:57absolute fact the only thing I would say
08:59again is please remember if you unplug
09:01and plug your HDMI cable with different
09:03devices please always go back to these
09:05settings and check that they're correct
09:07I've made it a habit of checking this
09:09thing a couple days now yeah because I
09:10know this Apple does some weird stuff
09:12and yeah we found them magically back to
09:15standard again I guess never enable and
09:19sometimes I've noticed as well the Apple
09:20gets a bit cheeky and the next day you
09:22turn the TV on it actually asks you
09:24again do you want to enable and just
09:27make sure you tell everyone in the
09:28family not to touch that button yeah it
09:30you want to do it it's kind of tempting
09:33it's likely and on the big red button
09:34that says do not push that everybody
09:35wants to push don't do it leave it on at
09:384k SDR do not enable HDR and you will be
09:41fine all right we'll do another video
09:43later we'll look at audio but for now
09:46that's plenty and we hope this really
09:49helps people trying to understand does
09:50Dolby vision work in this format yes it
09:54absolutely does but please test all of
09:56your system first to make sure it works
