00:00well hey guys I hope your week is going
00:02well I thought it would be fun to do a
00:04video today talking about coconut oil
00:06for hair and for skin you guys really
00:10seem to enjoy many of my videos talking
00:12about natural ingredients in skin care
00:14and hair care and I get questions what
00:16about coconut oil is it good for our
00:19hair is it something that can be used as
00:21a body moisturizer so I thought I would
00:23talk all about coconut oil today and
00:26coconut oil is a natural oil derived
00:30from the mature coconut the meat of the
00:33mature coconut and coconut oil has been
00:36used in many cultures traditionally for
00:40hair care and body care for many many
00:43years and commercially you will find
00:46coconut oil and coconut oil derivatives
00:48and a lot of body moisturizers cleansers
00:52shampoos and conditioners coconut oil is
00:56a ideal and interesting ingredient for
00:59inclusion in skin care products because
01:02of some of its structural features
01:04coconut oil is a small low molecular
01:07weight oil and it also is rich in
01:11triglycerides specifically it is very
01:14rich in the triglyceride lauric acid and
01:17this imparts a overall positive charge
01:20to coconut oil it is the positive charge
01:24along with the small size of coconut oil
01:27that makes it uniquely suited for
01:30inclusion in skin care and hair care in
01:34terms of hair care I think where it
01:36really shines quite literally is in
01:40helping with the care of the strands of
01:43your hair cutting the hair with coconut
01:47oil before exposing your hair to water
01:49can help reduce something that commonly
01:54high growth fatigue I've never I never
01:57hear people talk about this outside of
01:59the dermatology literature I don't hear
02:01it in the way you know in the public the
02:04high real fatigue is something that
02:06occurs on your hair shaft when you get
02:09your hair wet and then dry your hair
02:11it occurs to a greater degree if you wet
02:14the hair and then subsequently heat
02:17blow-dry it dry it with a with a hot
02:19blow-dryer and what it is is that the
02:22hair cuticle gets saturated with the
02:26water and then that water is then
02:29removed very quickly when you either
02:31towel dry or blow-dry the hair and that
02:34count ruffled the outer hair cuticle and
02:38make the hair shaft more susceptible to
02:40breakage certain hair types are more at
02:43risk for this than others if you have
02:45color treated hair or chemically treated
02:49hair again it's going to be more
02:51susceptible to hydrophobic SPO sure to
02:54water and this can result not only in
02:56hair breakage but making your hair
02:58frizzy and just not as as cooperative
03:03with your hair styling coconut oil
03:06really can help a lot with that and has
03:09been actually examined and studied for
03:12coconut oil applied to the hair has been
03:16shown to reduce the degree of high roll
03:19fatigue by I believe it upwards of forty
03:21eight percent in a study that looked at
03:24submerging the hair in water for I think
03:26an hour so you know it can help in terms
03:29of reducing the amount of hair breakage
03:31that occurs with washing your hair or
03:33you know if you swim in a pool or you
03:36swim outdoors coconut oil is something
03:39that can kind of help to buffer against
03:41the damage to your hair shaft also if
03:43you're somebody new colors color colors
03:46your hair heat Styles your hair coconut
03:48oil is something that can really help
03:50and it's the combination of the low
03:52molecular weight of coconut oil and that
03:53positive charge from the lauric acid
03:55that allowed to do this it penetrates
03:58the hair shaft very well and can help
04:02seal that cuticle down and protect you
04:05from from those shifts in water that
04:08leach you frizz and breakage
04:10coconut oil also has some desirable
04:13properties for skin care it is naturally
04:16antibacterial and has been shown to
04:18inhibit the growth of certain pathogenic
04:21bacteria that can colonize the skin like
04:23certain strains of Staphylococcus and it
04:26does also have a little bit of
04:27antifungal activity and can potentially
04:30inhibit the growth of the types of
04:32fungus that cause things like ringworm
04:34athlete's foot it has been examined in
04:37comparison to mineral oil and has been
04:40shown to be equally if equally as
04:42effective as mineral oil and in some
04:44studies superior to mineral oil for use
04:49as a body moisturizer in comparison to
04:51plain mineral oil and probably some of
04:54the studies showing it's superior maybe
04:56that has to do with the fact that
04:58coconut oil unlike mineral oil has some
05:01antibacterial properties so if you
05:04recall back to my video on no Mueller
05:06eczema or discoid dermatitis is it's
05:10also called I mentioned how important
05:12body moisturizer uses and coconut oil is
05:15an option as an emollient it's not
05:18fantastic decreasing trans epidermal
05:21water loss and really keeping the skin
05:23hydrated but it can definitely soften
05:26the skin on and works just as well as
05:28mineral oil by itself so it is often
05:31because about it is often included in
05:34moisturizers and body moisturizers and
05:36many natural you know all natural kind
05:40of marketing around skin here might use
05:43coconut oil instead of mineral oil you
05:47know to kind of get around to kind of
05:49cater to the desire to use more natural
05:52products and coconut oil is actually an
05:55evidence-based oil alternative to
05:57mineral oil coconut oil is actually
06:00pretty safe and low irritancy and does
06:02not appear to be sensitizing a 20-17
06:06cosmetic ingredient review expert panel
06:09concluded that coconut oil
06:11non-toxic is not irritating it's not
06:14sensitizing and it does not appear to be
06:17a risk factor for leading to
06:19sensitization and the development of
06:22allergic contact dermatitis while
06:24coconut oil itself is an unlikely
06:27allergen when applied to the skin
06:29there are many derivatives of coconut
06:31oil that are used in personal care
06:34products cosmetics and people can and
06:37frequently do become irritated by and/or
06:40sensitized and subsequently allergic to
06:43these derivatives of coconut oil they
06:47include things like Coke Mentos butane
06:50coconut dye at the nola mine cook a
06:54mental purple diet methylamine as well
06:58as a newer emerging class of skin
07:02allergens the alkyl glucosides which can
07:05be derived from coconut as well it's not
07:09the coconut oil itself that is an
07:11allergen but these derivatives of
07:14coconut oil frequently are both
07:17irritating and also can potentially be
07:21sensitizing and something you become
07:22allergic to but I want to emphasize that
07:24coconut oil by itself just pure coconut
07:27oil does not seem to be a likely contact
07:30allergen however there are some concerns
07:33around coconut oil and its inclusion in
07:36skincare products coconut oil actually
07:38is comedogenic and can layer and worsen
07:41acne so while it has been shown to be a
07:44good choice as a body moisturizer for
07:46children in particular with eczema
07:49consideration for people who would like
07:51a more natural alternative to typical
07:54moisturizers that are recommended
07:56coconut oil is not a great choice if you
07:59have acne if you have body acne or
08:01facial acne I would not encourage you to
08:04use coconut oil in those areas it can be
08:08comedogenic and the reason for this is
08:10not it can be just either too heavy or
08:13penetrate around the pore in combination
08:17with your oils in your in your sebum the
08:21combination of that and
08:22coconut oil can lead to an irritation
08:25around the pore that can trigger and
08:27acting like flare so coconut oil is
08:30something that is advised you avoid if
08:33you have acne also if you have any kind
08:36of skin condition due to malassezia or
08:40hetero spur on yeast on the body and
08:43that can be made worse by coconut oil
08:46because this little yeast loves oil and
08:49thrives in oil actually requires oil to
08:52to grow and therefore you see these
08:55rashes in areas of the body that have
08:57more more oil glands and our oil air so
09:01you can develop a rash on the body also
09:03fungal acne is related to malassezia
09:08coconut oil would not be a good choice
09:09as a moisturizer or even makeup remover
09:12for you also coconut oil in the scalp
09:17would be a bad choice as well for anyone
09:21with dandruff because there's a lot of
09:23malassezia on our scalp and coconut oil
09:27account in theory worse than not
09:29malassezia burden and contribute to the
09:32dandruff so while it's great on the hair
09:34shaft for cutting down on breakage and
09:36press not a good choice in the scalp
09:38also not a great choice in the scalp
09:41because you can imagine on the scalp as
09:44your head eats up and you go throughout
09:46your day some of that's gonna migrate
09:48onto your forehead and because it is
09:51comedogenic it can cause theoretically
09:55and acting like breakout or what's
09:58called closed comedones on the forehead
10:00we see this a lot and historically we
10:03saw this type of acne like rash to
10:06people in people using hair pomade
10:08it's called pomade acne it's a specific
10:10type of comedonal acne created by the
10:16perhaps coconut oil you know you can
10:18imagine it's equally that same kind of
10:21risk of an oil trickling down onto your
10:23forehead that is comedogenic that could
10:25lead to a flare of your acne so i
10:28wouldn't recommend it
10:29or for use on the scalp for those
10:32reasons not only put it flair dandruff
10:34but also could trickle down onto your
10:36face and lead to lead to coma dermal
10:39acne in a worsening seborrhoeic
10:42so while coconut oil itself does not
10:44appear to be allergenic or irritating by
10:49itself like pure coconut oil that you
10:51buy like virgin coconut oil and
10:54specifically husband is is what was used
10:57in some of the eczema studies that
10:59showed benefit while that appears to be
11:01perfectly safe and not a problem in
11:03terms of being an allergen or an
11:05irritant do you be aware that when you
11:07see coconut oil listed as an ingredient
11:09in skincare products
11:11it may not be pure coconut oil you know
11:14that's kind of one of the things about
11:15cosmetic manufacturers they're not super
11:18transparent on the disclosure of things
11:21they can use coconut oil and you know
11:23maybe it is they have additives like
11:26other types of oils so it's really hard
11:28to say is that coconut oil in its pure
11:30form and therefore sometimes coconut oil
11:34and products can lead to irritant
11:36contact dermatitis or allergic contact
11:38dermatitis it might be responsible for
11:40those not because of the coconut oil but
11:43because maybe it's some sort of additive
11:45that they're not being super transparent
11:47is present so be aware of that it's not
11:51the coconut oil itself but sometimes
11:53additives and things can make the
11:56coconut oil more irritating more likely
11:58to irritate or cause skin problems so
12:02overall I would say some of the best
12:03best uses of coconut oil include as a
12:07body moisturizer for people with eczema
12:10who are looking for a more natural
12:12alternative it does have antibacterial
12:14properties which is good for the for the
12:17healing skin of eczema and it's also a
12:20good choice to put on your hair as a
12:22conditioning agent on the shops that I
12:24would encourage you to avoid putting it
12:27onto the scalp but a good hair
12:29conditioning agent for people who have
12:31in particular for people who have color
12:33treated hair heat styled haired hair
12:35this prone to breakage to buffer against
12:39some of the damage that
12:40from getting the hair wet particularly
12:42as we're going into summer if you swim
12:45in the ocean the salt water the exposure
12:48to water and then getting out and towel
12:50drying and the heat that can really lead
12:52to a lot of damage on the hair shop
12:55consider you think coconut oil you know
12:57not harmful for the environment and
12:59consider slaughtering that on your hair
13:01before you go swim in the ocean you know
13:04it might cut down on some of that for
13:06you so that is that's a good use of it
13:08and then lastly one other situation that
13:11I will draw your attention to that is
13:13incredibly uncommon but I do think that
13:16it's worth mentioning particularly since
13:18you guys watch me from all over the
13:20world so I don't know maybe this is
13:22germane to you in particular it is a
13:24condition though I've never seen before
13:26but I've read about it and you only see
13:28it in South India so I know many of you
13:30watched me from India and forgive me I'm
13:33going to butcher the name of this it's
13:34called mu D should mu D I CH ood
13:39literally it means heat of the hair this
13:42is something that I've seen in southern
13:43India where there is kind of a desire to
13:48have many young women like to have long
13:51healthy hair and that's like they're a
13:54desire and one of the things that is
13:56common or commonly practiced in that
13:58area of the world particular is cutting
14:00the hair with oil and so my
14:03understanding is in particular at women
14:04will you know wash their hair the hair
14:07will be wet and coat it with the coconut
14:09oil or coat it with any with other types
14:11of plant oils there's Sun usual skin
14:14rate reaction called moody shoot that
14:16could happen it was only seen here where
14:20it's a combination of the oils on the
14:23hair and then they have a very long hair
14:25that then sits on their back in the back
14:27of their neck so that wet hair with the
14:31oil sitting on the skin and combined in
14:34combination with the heat of southern
14:35India it's very hot there leads to this
14:38rash of moody shoot or heat of the hair
14:41and it starts out as a little kind of
14:43pus bumps that are acne like that then
14:46heal as discolored flat top bumps and so
14:52the knack on the on the upper back
14:54wherever the hair is touching it's
14:55thought to be that combination of mixing
14:57of the water which is an irritant as
15:01well as the oils in combination with the
15:03body oils in combination with the heat
15:06it just creates this weird unusual skin
15:10rash called moody shoot or heated the
15:14hair I've never seen it before but I
15:16have read about it it is frequently
15:17mentioned and a lot of dermatology
15:21review articles and it is something that
15:24you see for whatever reason only been
15:26reported in the southern inyo I guess
15:27because it's commonly practiced to cut
15:30the hair and it's not just coconut oil
15:33they're either olive oil or sesame oil I
15:35believe is also been reported with this
15:37so it's not only coconut oil but you
15:39will comment below on how you use
15:41coconut oil and your skin care hair care
15:43I know many of you like using it
15:45personally I've tried using it to remove
15:48my sunscreen and it works well do it to
15:52do that particularly on the body I don't
15:55have great success using it on my face
15:58just because it's a little hard to apply
16:00but a messy so I don't use it on a
16:03regular basis but if you have a really
16:04heavy layer of water resistant like zinc
16:08based sunscreen that you're using when
16:10you're outdoors in summer and you want
16:11to remove it when you get inside before
16:13you hop in the shower slaughtering your
16:15body and coconut oil before you get into
16:17the shower is one way to help facilitate
16:19removing on I also don't use it on my
16:22face because like I saw it is
16:24comedogenic but I mostly don't use it on
16:27my face because I find it a little a
16:29little messy and hard to work with as
16:31opposed to just playing mineral oil or
16:34or some of the cleanse at the hada labo
16:36cleansing oil that i typically is but i
16:39know it is popular as a makeup remover
16:41as an eye makeup remover so comment
16:44below of those of you who use it how you
16:45use that but i hope this video is
16:47helpful to you guys and sharing with you
16:49some the benefits potential risks of
16:52using coconut oil if you liked it give a
16:55thumbs up share it with your friends and
16:57don't forget sunscreen and subscribe
16:59I'll talk to you guys tomorrow
