00:00almost exactly a year ago I decided to
00:02get rid of all of my Fuji equipment and
00:04buy a full-frame Sony camera admittedly
00:06not out of necessity I was indeed very
00:09happy with my Fuji cameras with just a
00:11few minor issues here and there but to
00:13be honest I just wanted to finally find
00:15out what the hype is all about and more
00:18importantly I finally wanted to know
00:20what it's like to own and use a proper
00:22full-frame mirrorless interchangeable
00:24lens system I always had a passion for
00:27cameras but it wasn't until I bought my
00:29first at are back when I was still in
00:31University in my early 20s that I really
00:33got into the hobby a big part of what
00:35inspired me to actually go out and buy a
00:37D in the first place was of course
00:40social media with platforms like
00:42Instagram being in what I would consider
00:45to be their Prime at the time and also
00:47seeing influencers like B Brown and
00:49others going on adventures with their
00:51Canon 5D Mark II's and getting all of
00:53those great shots now back then I
00:55certainly could not afford a full-frame
00:58camera not even close so so my first
01:00DSLR was a Canon 1000d which I later
01:04managed to replace with a Canon 70D and
01:07you know at the time that Canon 7D was
01:10already a huge financial investment for
01:13me and it was also totally worth it not
01:16in the sense that I made any money off
01:18of it because I didn't and I wasn't even
01:20trying to but because it allowed me to
01:22just capture so many great memories that
01:26I still hold on to and I wouldn't want
01:28to miss them for the world so overall no
01:31regrets but what kind of bugged me and I
01:34know that this will sound kind of
01:36ridiculous to a lot of people out there
01:38but back in the day it kind of always
01:41bugged me that I sort of had to make du
01:44with just an apsc camera and that I
01:47wasn't able to get a fullframe camera
01:51because that seemed to be the goal at
01:53the end of the day so having to deal
01:56with an apsc camera felt almost kind of
01:59like a disadvantage or like I wasn't
02:02getting everything out of my images that
02:04I could get out of my images I mean
02:06after all 35 mm film stock or what we
02:09would now consider full frame has been
02:11the go-to film size for the longest time
02:14and you always sort of get reminded of
02:16that because when you're buying a lens
02:18for your apsc camera you're always
02:20thinking about fullframe equivalence or
02:23at least I was so when I was getting a
02:2516 mm lens I wasn't doing that because I
02:27wanted to have a 16 mm focal length it
02:30was because I wanted to have a 24 mm
02:33fullframe equivalent so what I'm trying
02:35to say is that there's always that
02:37reminder that you're working with
02:40something that is kind of wrong and
02:42perhaps a chip on your shoulder at least
02:45for me that might be inferior to what
02:48you probably actually want to use and
02:50therefore you know I was always just
02:52kind of curious to find out how big the
02:55difference between apsc and fullframe
02:57actually is anyway I later decided to
02:59switch from Canon to Fuji because at the
03:03time Circa 2018 Canon seemed to have
03:05just abandoned their apsc customers and
03:08left them for that because they refused
03:10to release a camera that could actually
03:13shoot 4K video without a crop especially
03:16in the apsc segment and so I made the
03:18jump over to Fuji and bought a Fuji xt30
03:22alongside a Fuji x100f fast forward a
03:25bit and I had also bought a Fuji xt4 at
03:28the time Fuji's flagship camera along
03:30with a few solid prime lenses now while
03:32I love the xt30 with all of its charm
03:35good looks and character built into such
03:37a compact little camera the xt4 was a
03:40real game Cher for me not only did it
03:42look and feel like a much more
03:44substantial camera but finally having
03:46Ibis really allowed me to take full
03:48advantage of those prime lenses
03:50especially when shooting handheld and I
03:52cannot even begin to tell you how happy
03:55I was with the results my three favorite
03:57lenses for my xt4 were the 2G 16 mm f1.4
04:01hands down probably one of the best
04:03densers that I've ever used and also the
04:0513 mm and 56 mm f1.4 primes by vro I
04:10also started shooting my videos in fog
04:12with the xt4 because of those juicy
04:1510bit files and yeah all of this
04:17combined just allowed me to get some
04:19really lovely photos and videos if I do
04:21say so myself it wasn't all perfect
04:23though the autofocus in video mode had a
04:25tendency to hunt every now and then even
04:28though in my opinion it's not where near
04:30as bad as some folks on this platform
04:32make it out to be also if you leave the
04:34camera in Auto exposure in video mode it
04:37will always make some kinds of
04:40adjustments to the light and to the
04:42brightness of your image even though the
04:44conditions might not change at all and
04:47my biggest gripe the Ibis had that
04:49really bad warping effect when using
04:52wider lenses like my vtrs 13 mm Prime
04:55handheld for video in terms of low light
04:57performance the xt4 with its Ibis was
04:59already so much better than anything
05:01that had experienced prior because again
05:04it really Unleashed those primes but
05:06still if it got dark enough there was
05:08still a lot of noise going on that
05:10rarely ever bothered me though mostly
05:12because of the overall very film-like
05:14look of the photos and videos that you
05:16get out of the Fuji so the high ISO
05:19noise just looked a bit like you know
05:22film grain but truth be told that little
05:24chip on my shoulder that I had from
05:26years ago back in University when I
05:28wasn't able to afford a fullframe camera
05:31was still there and still nagging me and
05:34so a year ago then I had some cash on
05:36the side and Sony was running their
05:39usual Christmas sales and I decided to
05:42go for it and so I bought a Sony a74
05:45along with a couple of lenses in terms
05:47of the camera's capabilities and stats
05:49it's fairly close to what I was used to
05:51with my Fuji xc4 so it could shoot 4K
05:5410bit video 4K 60 with a crop 120 FPS in
05:581080 has I I and a flip screen two SD
06:01card slots and so on the main difference
06:03this time around being that it's a Sony
06:06has a higher megapixel sensor and most
06:08importantly it is a full-frame camera
06:11mind you this is not my first ever
06:13full-frame camera because I actually
06:15bought Leica Q2 about 2 years ago and it
06:18is to this day my favorite EDC camera
06:21but the a74 is in fact my first
06:24fullframe camera with interchangeable
06:26lenses so with all of that out of the
06:28way with thousands of Euros wiped off of
06:32my bank account was it worth it well I'm
06:35honestly not quite sure there's a bit of
06:37nuance here so let me explain so what I
06:40expected or what I wanted to get out of
06:42my Sony camera was noticeable better
06:44image quality both in photos and in
06:47videos better low light performance
06:49better video autofocus better Ibis
06:52especially with wider lenses more
06:54dynamic range sharper images and more
06:56Boke especially when shooting with wider
06:58lenses and I would say that for the most
07:01part my expectations were actually met
07:04but mind you I haven't actually done any
07:06scientific testing this is very much
07:08just based on my very vague personal
07:12perception but in terms of dynamic range
07:14and overall image quality I actually
07:16think that there's not as much of a
07:19difference as I would have thought and
07:21that is especially true when we're
07:22talking about videos Fuji's F lock files
07:25behave very different compared to Sony's
07:27s lock files and I have to overexpose
07:30the living out of my Sony to get
07:32the results that I want while my
07:34exposure compensation was always set to
07:36zero on my xt4 but what I can say with a
07:40fairly High degree of certainty is that
07:43a the low light performance of the a74
07:46is way better than that of the xt4 and I
07:50also no longer have any issues with Ibis
07:53wobbles when filming handheld with wider
07:55lenses and yeah when we are talking
07:58about bokeh it honestly doesn't make the
08:00biggest difference with longer focal
08:02length but it's certainly a different
08:04story when we are talking about wide-
08:06angle lenses while I led my 13 and 16 mm
08:09f1.4 prime lenses on the Fuji and I do
08:12think that these are just about the
08:13closest you could get to a full-frame
08:15look on an apsc camera they are still no
08:18match for something like this Majestic
08:2024 mm f1.4 G Master for the Sony so you
08:24could say that in terms of Shear
08:26capabilities the upgrade experiment
08:29while a success well you could also
08:31argue that I don't need all of those
08:33capabilities and that the difference in
08:35image quality and such will not make my
08:38photos any better or my videos any more
08:41interesting and you would absolutely be
08:42right in saying that but obviously that
08:44was not the point uh this experiment was
08:47just to well tame my curiosity about
08:51what the difference would be like to
08:52actually have use a full-frame camera
08:55and also a bit to be honest to fight
08:58that inferiority complex of just having
09:00an apsc camera so in essence I guess you
09:03could say that I had fallen prey to the
09:05great marketing of camera manufacturers
09:08but yeah at least I had gotten a great
09:11and very capable camera out of it so all
09:13is good and well right but it's not like
09:17there are no negatives to this so
09:19firstly one thing that I've honestly not
09:22appreciated enough while I still had my
09:24fui xt4 is the shutter sound that it
09:28made because the shutter sound of the
09:30xt4 is fairly silent and somehow just
09:34very pleasant and high quality overall
09:38now again this rarely ever mattered to
09:40me but in 2023 I got to shoot two
09:44weddings for friends I'm not doing this
09:46professionally but when I was shooting
09:49those weddings I really understood why
09:52having a silent shutter sound would
09:55actually be beneficial and the shutter
09:57sound of the Sony a74
09:59just sounds kind of terrible especially
10:02in a setting like this now you could
10:04obviously just use the electronic
10:06shutter and with that the a74 would be
10:10silent but I kind of do like to have a
10:12shutter sound because it gives me that
10:14reassuring feedback that I have actually
10:17just taken a shot so yeah I would much
10:21prefer to have the shutter on of the xt4
10:23back but anyway that's of course not the
10:25main issue the main issue is this why
10:29while I do have huge respect for the
10:31capabilities of my Sony a74 I simply do
10:35not have the same passion for lack of a
10:38better word for it that I had for my
10:41Fuji xt4 you see the Fuji xt4 was not
10:44only extremely capable as a camera but
10:47it was also just a very beautiful and
10:50nice tool to behold I absolutely love
10:53the old school design and layout but I
10:55also love how Fuji managed to give you
10:58all the dials and buttons you need to
11:00maintain modern usability it's really
11:03The Perfect Blend of old and new the
11:06Sony on the other hand is just a tool
11:09there is nothing wrong with that of
11:11course but to me it comes off kind of
11:14soulless I have almost never felt an
11:17urge to just grab it and go out and
11:19shoot the way I did with my xt4 it's
11:22just not inspiring for lack of a better
11:25word so I usually just grab my ler Q2
11:28and and only use my a74 when I want to
11:31shoot something very specific and the
11:33lier just can't do it so while my a74 is
11:37actually my Workhorse camera that I use
11:39for these videos primarily it almost
11:41never leaves the house also and you
11:44probably will have heard this if you've
11:45watched one of my videos about switching
11:47from the Fuji X100 V to the Leica Q2
11:51shooting with a Fuji camera just is more
11:53fun in general and a huge part of that
11:56in my opinion is because you get more of
11:59an instant gratification when you're
12:01shooting with a Fuji camera and that is
12:04at least in part also down to Fuji's
12:06color signs and the ability to create
12:08custom jpeg recipes in essence you get a
12:11customizable Fuji preset slapped onto
12:14every image you take which makes it look
12:16great the second you have taken it and
12:18look at it on the back of your camera
12:20whereas with the Sony or the ler for
12:22that matter you get a fairly boring flat
12:25and more natural image which then has to
12:27be edited and po to really make it pop
12:30obviously editing your photos in
12:32Lightroom can still yield great or
12:35probably even better results and me
12:37personally I have simply gone back to
12:40editing all of my photos in Lightroom
12:42and that's fine but again it just lacks
12:45that sort of instant gratification that
12:48you get with a Fuji camera and yes of
12:51course that is not a big problem with
12:53the camera that is more of a me problem
12:55but it is what it is with that being
12:57said though the Sony just has started to
13:00win me over more and more with just how
13:04insanely capable it is as a tool and you
13:07know part of me thinks that this is
13:09probably just what I needed because with
13:11the Sony you kind of lose the fashion
13:15aspect of having a camera it's just not
13:17a goodlooking object but it really
13:19focuses in on what matters most I guess
13:23which is getting the shot and it's very
13:26very good at that so yeah who can tell
13:28what more important the process of
13:31taking a photo or actually getting the
13:34results who can tell anyway I'm getting
13:37sidetracked in conclusion I would say
13:39that overall I'm very happy that I made
13:41the jump from Fuji to Sony not
13:44necessarily because the Sony provides a
13:47lot of things that the Fuji simply
13:49wasn't capable of or because I needed to
13:52have the Sony or full-frame camera in
13:54any way but because a it is very nice to
13:58have all of those those capabilities and
13:59B I've finally been able to quiet that
14:02nagging voice in my head that just
14:05wanted to know what it's like to shoot
14:07with a fullframe camera with that being
14:10said would I make the jump again knowing
14:12what I know now probably not honestly I
14:15mean it's certainly nice to have the
14:17Sony a74 and again the a74 is also
14:20certainly the more capable camera but
14:23you also just miss out on a few aspects
14:26however with that being said I'm also
14:27not planning to go back to to Fuji for
14:29the simple reason that I would have to
14:32sell all of my Sony gear and then rebby
14:35all of my Fuji gear which I have just
14:38sold for a loss that would just be
14:42financially so yeah I think I will just
14:45stay in the Fuji ecosystem for a while
14:48which also has other benefits that I
14:50haven't even talked about like the
14:52ability to use that plug andplay hot
14:55shoe which allows you to plug in an
14:58external mic microphone without having
14:59to deal with any sorts of cables um so
15:02it's just a very streamlined and
15:05sensible system overall so those are my
15:08thoughts on switching from Fuji to Sony
15:11I'm not exactly sure what we've learned
15:13today but I hope this was still somewhat
15:15interesting to you if it was don't
