00:03today's an interesting one because today
00:04we're talking about Assassin's Creed
00:06Ubisoft historical revisionism and the
00:09Japanese government there's more a lot
00:11more but the hook is that a wildly
00:13popular gaming franchise that being
00:15Assassin's Creed after a series of very
00:17unfortunate decisions is actively being
00:19accused of cultural Invasion a problem
00:22that an official representative is now
00:23bringing in front of the Japanese diete
00:25which is their parliamentary government
00:27his name that is crazy that it has escal
00:30ated this much that is
00:33insane bro it's a game I know the
00:37representative is Satoshi Hamada and
00:39I'll get to that part later on but the
00:41gist of it is that an entire historical
00:43narrative was crafted over the span of
00:45about 9 years only to now be heavily
00:47disputed at the expense of a
00:48multi-billion dollar franchise which
00:50attempted to build its latest entry
00:52almost exclusively off the back of a
00:54highly suspect body of work in essence
00:57Ubisoft has made their next entry in the
00:59Assassin's Creed fr anch the focal point
01:01of a brewing International Scandal great
01:04job this is where I have to go through a
01:06sort of narrative Arc so to speak and
01:08give the underlying context I'm really
01:10kind of impressed at how bad they [Â __Â ]
01:12this up and my favorite thing about this
01:14is the fact that they [Â __Â ] this up by
01:17trying to not like they wanted to
01:19project like a forward-thinking
01:21progressive View and they did the exact
01:25opposite that's my favorite thing about
01:27it the situation before expanding on
01:30yeah had the complete opposite effect
01:32Assassin's Creed is one of the top
01:33grossing video game franchises of all
01:36time oh yeah it's on the top three or
01:38the top five mind you and it pales in
01:39comparison to franchises like Pokemon or
01:42Mario having surpassed 200 million
01:44copies sold with billion total revenue
01:48it's one of the most successful
01:49Entertainment Properties on Earth with
01:51no signs of slowing down just to
01:53highlight that point Assassin's Creed
01:54Valhalla the latest entry before Shadows
01:57which is it's crazy how like Halo is
01:59still up there that high and the last
02:00Halo game made was uh Halo Reach yeah
02:04nuts we're talking about today sold over
02:0720 million separate copies making it the
02:10highest grossing entry in the series
02:12period as a franchise like it or not
02:14personally being a DI hard fan of the
02:16original trilogy with main character
02:17Etso Assassin's Creed is more successful
02:20now than ever before making it a focal
02:22point in the video game landscape as
02:23Ubisoft progressively I do think
02:25Valhalla made the game a lot more
02:27mainstream it did because like I I feel
02:30like and this is even something I said
02:31like I I felt like Assassin's Creed
02:33games should not appeal to me because
02:36like I don't really like stealth games a
02:37whole lot so the fact that I wanted to
02:39play it is like I don't know like is
02:41this really Assassin's Creed
02:43anymore increases their marketing and
02:45development budgets year after year
02:47after year with notable success while
02:49doing so sure they have their failures
02:52at times but Assassin's Creed isn't one
02:54of them and baring any sort of
02:55unexpected consequences this latest
02:58entry that being Shadows would would
02:59seem very likely to continue that Trend
03:02maybe for anyone who isn't already aware
03:05Assassin's Creed Shadows is set in
03:07feudal Japan which really isn't
03:09surprising at all after a game called
03:11ghost of tsushima basically copied the
03:13formula and sold almost 10 million
03:15copies over four years that game went
03:17crazy like I didn't even realize how
03:20popular it was that was
03:22insane as a PlayStation exclusive people
03:26have been asking for a game about feudal
03:28Japan Ubisoft have progressively
03:29expanded their repertoire of locations
03:31for the franchise and all things
03:33considered it seems like a perfect time
03:35for the franchise to make that jump
03:37however if you're going to make a
03:38Japanese themed game you probably
03:41shouldn't piss off Japanese people and
03:43that's where Ubisoft epically dropped
03:45the ball in May of 2024 Ubisoft unveiled
03:48the official trailer for the game and
03:50pretty much immediately afterward things
03:52started to get a little bit people crazy
03:54the story was set to feature two main
03:56protagonists one male one female like
03:58before but the male Agonist was
04:00determined to be yasuke who is quote the
04:03first black samurai and referred to
04:05elsewhere as the first foreign born
04:08Samurai as well this is where the
04:10controversy starts because according to
04:11an interview with game director Charles
04:13Ben conducted in Xbox gamewire quote
04:16we're at the end of soku era in a
04:18turning point of Japan history
04:20Assassin's Creed is well known for its
04:21depiction of the history and accurate
04:23Recreation of the world and it's what
04:25players can expect with Assassin's Creed
04:27Shadows we're showing real hisorical
04:30figures such as Oda noaga and a lot of
04:32events that happened during that time so
04:34you're not only playing in feudal Japan
04:37but learning about this fantastic time
04:39period also remember what they said the
04:41other day about how it's the exact
04:43opposite godamn wokeism and again right
04:46it's like who is the person who's saying
04:48this just your average white guy that's
04:53is giving the opportunity to the players
04:55to live not just one but the two best
04:58fantasies of Japan the Samurai and the
05:00Shinobi end quote on its face that's
05:03pretty good however opinions rapidly
05:05took a turn for the worst when the true
05:07atmosphere of the game started taking
05:08shape with examples like this cropping
05:11up from the Gameplay trailer and getting
05:13plastered all over online messaging
05:15boards and social media Village not
05:18while I have breath in my lungs and a
05:27him I'll wash away with your blood for
05:31anyone who didn't notice there the
05:32background track is basically hip-hop
05:35infused Asian battle music which
05:37absolutely does not match the time
05:39period the atmosphere or the subject
05:42matter except for one particular way
05:44I'll skip over the smaller stuff here
05:46and get right to the main issues but the
05:48general consensus around this game began
05:50to rapidly sour especially in God see
05:54yasuke the main protagonist and the
05:56quote first African Samurai has rapidly
05:59ascended the rungs of popularity and
06:00recognition in the west but not so much
06:03elsewhere in the world yasuke is the
06:05subject of a Netflix animated series now
06:08he has multiple media mentions there's a
06:10Broadway show about him even slated for
06:122026 and he also shows up in other video
06:15games as well show about him even slated
06:17for 2026 and he also shows up in other
06:20video games as well like a boss fight in
06:22neo2 called the obsidian Samurai but
06:25pretty much all of that recognition
06:27stems from a particular historian
06:29historian named Thomas lley this
06:38is this is really something special
06:42man by the way another white guy the
06:48guys with the whitest of white guy
06:57Thomas this is where things get
07:00pretty much every modern Western mention
07:02of yasuke tracks back directly in some
07:04capacity to Thomas lley for the prior
07:07examples I even gave myself the
07:08Smithsonian article referring to yasuke
07:10as the first black samurai quotes lle
07:13directly referencing his book and that
07:15very same book relas in 201 is the basis
07:18for almost every modern depiction of Yas
07:20that I could even find Thomas lley is
07:23the Premier historian associated with
07:26yase but the incredible popularity of
07:28Assassin's Creed and the anger at
07:30inaccurate portrayal of Japanese feudal
07:32society it's all referring back to
07:36him it all goes back to this one guy
07:40this is insane that this has happened
07:42and he sourced himself yes he's writing
07:46Wikipedia entries about himself under
07:50another off a controversy that may
07:52undermine ly's entire body of work as it
07:55forces Ubisoft to openly apologize and
07:58causes a NeverEnding debate online about
08:00whether or not Yos was ever even really
08:03a samurai just to get this out of the
08:05way right now I don't personally have a
08:07stake in all of this Assassin's Creed to
08:09put it very bluntly has never been tied
08:11to reality in my mind and for a perfect
08:13example we can look at Assassin's Creed
08:153 which conveniently took place in
08:18Revolutionary America yeah I don't
08:20actually think that the half Mohawk
08:22Indian assassin fought side by side with
08:25George Washington to recover an alien
08:27object I'm not going to sit here and
08:29complain about historical accuracy when
08:31the entire franchise is about a secret
08:33League of athletically superpowered Time
08:35Travelers fighting another secret
08:37society no this is actually what
08:39happened extraterrestrial artifacts this
08:42is what happened the fact that yasuke
08:44existed as a sort of blank slate
08:46historical character that was in fact a
08:48real person but we don't know all that
08:50much about him kind of makes him perfect
08:52as a narrative blank canvas especially
08:54when he existed in close proximity to
08:56significant historical events however
08:58that's my person personal opinion and
09:00when it comes to Thomas lley personal
09:02opinion goes entirely out the window
09:04hopefully everyone can follow along with
09:06this part I'll do my best to make it as
09:07straightforward as possible okay yasuke
09:09increasingly popular in Western media
09:11with growing recognition across
09:13Entertainment Properties didn't always
09:15hold the same level of recognition right
09:18now if you go to his Wikipedia page
09:20there's a pretty sizable entry but back
09:22in 2014 the entry was just a tiny
09:24fraction of the size except if you go to
09:26the edit history for his Wikipedia page
09:35oh man it's really kind of impressive
09:37that this has happened bro why you
09:38Americans so focus on race all the
09:41time hey hey this I didn't do this I
09:45this don't put this hey don't put this
09:46on me I didn't [Â __Â ] write
09:51this find something very interesting and
09:54that is a particular user named totor
09:56Tom who has made sizable edits to the
09:59page the sources and the information
10:01contained within it one
10:03ofar Thomas this is the second in a
10:05series of edits I will carry out
10:07following a study of his life and times
10:10all will be properly referenced when I
10:11get the chance end quote right and if
10:13you look at the actual profile of tooram
10:16you see quote tooram is Thomas lley a
10:19faculty member at Nihon University
10:21College of Law Tokyo Japan his interests
10:24are primarily Japanese history wait I
10:26didn't even know this
10:29I thought this was just assumed that it
10:31was him but it actually says that it was
10:41him related end quote that may seem even
10:44know that the moment or insignificant
10:46rather because any profile on Wikipedia
10:48can write anything it wants in the Bio
10:50Section but Thomas lley is listed on the
10:53nhon University faculty page and the
10:55account toor Tom was adding his papers
10:58and his book as page sources before the
11:01work was even published here's where it
11:03gets really strange speaking to Time
11:05Magazine discussing the life of Yas in
11:07reference to the Netflix anime series
11:09lley had this to say quote there's no
11:12record but tradition holds it that
11:14yasuke was the one who took nobunaga's
11:16head to save it from the enemy
11:18continuing later yasuke therefore by
11:20escaping with the head could have been
11:23seen and has been seen as changing
11:26Japanese history end quote what he said
11:29acknowledges in the briefest of ways
11:31possible that there's no actual evidence
11:33but goes on to say that yasuke has been
11:36seen as changing Japanese history
11:52him who cares what do you would do you
11:54disagree I mean of course this yeah no
11:57this is just the way it is
12:00if you look at the Japanese version of
12:02his book not the English version it
12:04holds an entirely different atmosphere
12:06please understand I don't speak Japanese
12:08nor could I find someone who can
12:09translate for me at this particular time
12:11so I used Google and various different
12:13transcription tools these are highly
12:14imperfect but the differences here are
12:16so profound I don't see how they could
12:18possibly fit together based purely on
12:19Mis transation by Google so here it is

12:56have mentioned it second escaping from
12:58the middle of feel like that' be kind of
13:00a pretty that'd be pretty noteworthy you
13:07[Â __Â ] he's making [Â __Â ] up the Japanese
13:10website translates foreign language
13:11Professor but nothing about
13:13history he's writing by many enemy
13:16soldiers would have been extremely
13:17difficult without the added task of
13:19carrying in addition to one's weapons an
13:21incredibly large and unwieldly object a
13:23human head end quote that is a very
13:26different tone than what he puts forward
13:28in Time Magazine when publishing for a
13:30Japanese audience he expresses that it's
13:32incredibly unlikely to be true and
13:34highlights his own doubt about the
13:36subject matter but when talking to a
13:38western audience he says that yasuke
13:39quote has been seen as changing Japanese
13:43history hopefully everyone can kind of
13:45see the problem as if that's not
13:48uh if I looked at this with the
13:53most generous perspective that I
13:56possibly could I could come to the
14:01that this is a quote that was done by
14:04him and it could have been taken out of
14:06context with him saying that and then
14:09providing context afterwards that was
14:15so I'm not sure if I believe this yeah
14:18Lost in Translation yeah or I mean no
14:20the thing is like Time Magazine is going
14:22to say this because it's going to make
14:23it seem more extreme right Lost in
14:27Translation yeah enough and the Tipping
14:29Point at least for me on ly's own
14:31credibility may24 an article and
14:34interview in the Japan times was
14:36published pertaining to the controversy
14:38around whether or not Yos was ever even
14:40a Samurai at all which said quote most
14:43telling to lley however is that no
14:45reputable Japanese historian has raised
14:47doubts about y's Samurai bonafides
14:49including sakin Corino who serve as a
14:52fact checker for African Samurai and is
14:54one of the country's foremost experts on
14:56the 1582 honji incident for which Yas
14:59was believed to be present end quote
15:01that's a very big deal one of the
15:03country's foremost experts on the 1582
15:05pooji incident and he was a fact checker
15:08for ly's book over the authenticity of
15:11yasuke being a Samurai with no disputes
15:14that's pretty important yeah of course
15:16except it's a lie sakin Corino publicly
15:20on Twitter published a statement that
15:21read quote when the Japanese version of
15:23Nobunaga and yasuke Oda publishing based
15:26on the original work by Thomas lley was
15:28published in 17 the translator yoshiko
15:31Fuji asked me to read it and give my
15:33opinion so I gave a few opinions it was
15:36just that and it wasn't something as
15:38Grand as a fact check
15:52and the crazy thing to me about this is
15:55the fact that they're lying about these
15:57people because they're thinking to the
15:59eles they're Japanese they can't read
16:01what we're saying anyway they're never
16:06out this is nuts man how do you do
16:12this oh my God quote after which the
16:16Japan times updated their article
16:18removing the claim by lley that Saku Jin
16:21Corino had served as a fact checker for
16:23African Samurai one is a fluke two is a
16:26coincidence three is a pattern Thomas
16:29lley appears to have been editing the
16:31yasuke Wikipedia page as far back as
16:322015 citing his own work which had not
16:35even been published yet he appears to be
16:37telling different versions let's listen
16:39to that again Thomas lley appears to
16:42have been editing the yasuke Wikipedia

16:51he that's crazy how do you do
16:55that what they did with the Egyptians
17:02appears to be telling different versions
17:04of historical events at the very least
17:06portraying them in radically different
17:08ways depending on his audience Western
17:10versus Japanese and he appears to have
17:12directly lied about the authenticity of
17:14his book using an appeal to Authority as
17:17it's called by claiming a certain expert
17:19fact checked that work before the expert
17:22themselves had to come out and clarify
17:24that was not true really one is a fluke
17:27two is a coincidence three is a pattern
17:30just in case for anyone still on the

17:38discovering this particular interview
17:40this new book of yours might read too
17:42many like a novel but uh to my
17:47understanding you're not a novelist no

18:00think 2017 so the book which you would
18:04find in front of you African Samurai is
18:09um readable version less academic far
18:13more narrative um though it's still
18:15based on the exact factual history it's
18:19just simply not full of uh references
18:21and other things like that just to recap
18:23that he says quote wait so a group of
18:26white devs are hijacking and changing in
18:28other countries culture and history
18:29based off of a white guy hijacking and
18:31changing another country's culture and
18:37history that is exactly what's
18:43yep the book which you find in front of
18:46you is a much more readable version less
18:48academic far more narrative though still
18:50based on the exact factual history
18:53however later on when the host Jing y
18:56Lee who was a PhD candidate cultural
18:59historian of 19th century Japan goof
19:01figure questions the biography referring
19:03to it as more historical fiction he
19:06replies by just brushing it off
19:08immediately and as we talked about
19:10earlier many May read this book as a
19:14novel because of well apart from the
19:18very specific um historic background
19:22there's also a lot of depictions of the
19:26characters um um I guess inner
19:30development um but it's category on
19:35Amazon and good reads is
19:38biography yeah well personally I feel
19:41like it's more of a historical fiction
19:44so how would you define the nature of
19:46this it's getting called out even in the
19:48interview Jesus well there's very very
19:52little there which is actually fiction
19:59scenes which were added because we knew
20:02that they might have happened there's
20:04one scene where uh yeske is is watching
20:07a Hawking session uh and we know that
20:10nooga was was almost obsessed by Hawking
20:14and and hunting with birds so therefore
20:16it's highly likely I mean we can say
20:18probably we're 99% sure that the ASE
20:21would have seen that so we did make up
20:23the occasional scene just to give a
20:24little bit of atmosphere if you like I
20:30in the aftermath of this new scrutiny
20:32seems to have fully deleted all of his
20:34social media profiles he has distanced
20:36himself entirely from that's what I
20:38would have done I would have roached the
20:41absolutely the oh [Â __Â ] oh
20:47mey but the controversy is not done with
20:50him posted by Satoshi Hamada as a
20:53serving member of the House of
20:54counselors in Japan which is the upper
20:56portion of the diete though he seems to
20:58be more like a fringe candidate than
21:00anything else rather than a central

21:59samurai but a legendary Samurai that was

22:05this blew up so much is that if they
22:08just had the guy in the story I don't
22:10think anybody would have really
22:12complained about it but the issue is
22:14that people like this always take it too
22:17far it's not enough to have the
22:20character in the game you have to also
22:22say that they're a samurai you also have
22:24to say that anybody who disagrees is
22:27like a racist and then you also have to
22:30say that they were in fact a legendary
22:33Samurai like it's just you can't it's
22:36not one step it's like four or
22:41five been seen as changing Japanese

22:46presumably relying on his work as one of
22:48the narrative pillars here given that
22:50the game centers on yosuke as an active
22:52Samurai who participated in a lot of
22:54combat routinely and Thomas lley is the
22:56only person pushing him forward
22:59can we also just just for a second like
23:01the combat in this game doesn't really
23:05good like this looks like about average
23:09if not a little bit below that right I
23:11mean I don't know I I don't think this
23:14great from an academic perspective in
23:17Japanese cut down the bambo now had to
23:19issue an apology that reads quote we
23:21have put significant effort into
23:22ensuring an immersive and respectful
23:24representation of feudal Japan however
23:27Our intention has never been present any
23:29of our Assassin's Creed games including
23:30Assassin's Creed shadows as factual
23:32representations of history or historical
23:34characters end quote and yet this is the
23:36same company once again referencing the
23:38Xbox game wire interview yes that said
23:40they are showing real historical figures
23:43so you're not only playing in feudal
23:45Japan but also learning about this
23:48fantastic time period right and what
23:50better thing to learn from about history
23:54Fiction why would you be learning from
23:56things if they're telling fictional stor
23:58like this doesn't jive to be perfectly
24:00clear I can actually see why they chose
24:03blank for the purpose of Storytelling I
24:05don't personally look at Assassin's
24:06Creed and think where's the historical
24:08accuracy but when you make a game about
24:10a certain I actually think that it's
24:12really cool the idea of it is really
24:13cool that you take a historical context
24:16and you use it as a canvas to tell a
24:18really interesting story but I think
24:20that whenever you start changing the
24:22actual historical characters in a way
24:25that is inauthentic then it could be
24:29I I think that's really what the issue
24:30is and it's also about why the change is
24:32happening is the change happening
24:34because this is some sort of like a
24:36virtue signal which is what I think this
24:38is or is it because it makes the story
24:40better or more interesting you see what
24:43I'm saying I think that's what the
24:46is culture which Assassin's Creed has
24:48routinely done why would you choose the
24:51only example of a samurai who isn't even
24:53agreed on as being a samurai as your
24:56main character and then put a cringy
24:58filter over that culture's music why
25:00would you make it so that when
25:01Assassin's Creed is finally set in Japan
25:04you don't even play as a Japanese
25:06warrior half of the time instead
25:08focusing on an outsider who brutally
25:10Slaughters real Japanese Samurai all
25:12over the open world well here's a really
25:13good question if you were to consider
25:16every Japanese every fighter at in the
25:21period if you were to add up all of the
25:25women and black guys what percentage
25:31at I bet probably one or
25:35two% if not zero when every single
25:39previous Assassin's Creed game focused
25:41on a character that actually related to
25:43the culture of origin in the
25:45Revolutionary War the Assassin was half
25:47mohawk in the original trilogy SEO
25:49auditory was Italian in Valhalla iore
25:52was a viking etc etc and also like keep
25:55in mind that those characters that were
25:57in the main character and the stories in
26:00the previous games were not real
26:02people so there's a different
26:04expectation it's like whenever you play
26:06as Abraham Lincoln but then you're
26:09fighting for the south in the Civil
26:11War well hold up that's a lot different
26:14than if you just played as a random
26:15confederate soldier because Abraham
26:18Lincoln was kind of like against that
26:20[Â __Â ] so obviously when you take a
26:23character that already has a history
26:28the expectation would be that the
26:30character probably would be closer to
26:37sense why are you breaking that Trend
26:39now at the end of the day the Yas
26:41disaster is the story of a historian who
26:44centered his entire body of work on
26:45portraying a little known Japanese
26:47figure as some sort of legendary hero
26:49twisting his words all over the place
26:51depending on who was in the audience at
26:53that particular time and Ubisoft went
26:55and made half of a AAA game about it in
26:57response Scholars critics regular
27:00players pretty much everybody online has
27:02been weighing in on whether or not his
27:04character was ever really a samurai
27:06whether or not he should be the main
27:07focus of the game and why Ubisoft might
27:10have made all of these creatively
27:11baffling decisions in the first place
27:13but at the end of the day I don't really
27:15have those answers my opinion Ubisoft
27:17wanted to score some diversity points
27:19that's really just what it boils down to
27:21yosuke happened to fit a pretty
27:23convenient narrative template while also
27:25scoring them those diversity points and
27:27allow them a historical figure who
27:29stands out dramatically in feudal Japan
27:31for some of the wrong reasons if you
27:33take this controversy of face value and
27:35they use that as their starting point
27:37and unwittingly rope themselves into a
27:38culture War for all all of the wrong
27:41reasons I think that's exactly what
27:42happened I do I think that is exactly
27:47absolutely at the worst possible time as
27:50people accuse each other of either
27:52rewriting history maliciously or being
27:55viciously racist depending on which side
27:57of the political aisle you're on that's
28:00it that is the Yas controversy explained
28:03and none of it will likely impact the
28:05game at all which is almost certainly
28:07going to sell between 10 and 20 million
28:09copies or more becoming wildly
28:11successful regardless of what we talk
28:12about today I think that whenever this
28:15game comes out this will be probably not
28:18even in the top five or 10 problems with
28:23game everything that I've seen from
28:26Ubisoft recently has been aggressively
28:29mediocre and this game was no
28:33different I don't feel like there's
28:35anything in in any of the gameplay that
28:37I saw that was very Innovative like at

28:46that the game might sell well but I
28:48think that it will do that and by
28:50delivering a subpar experience will make
28:52people less likely to buy the next
28:56one the game is not for you really like
29:00okay well what about Star Wars Outlaws
29:02is that one not for me too I feel like a
29:04lot of these games like it they just
29:05don't really look that appealing they
29:07don't look that look that good and hey
29:10maybe maybe I'm wrong but as somebody
29:13who's watched and played a lot of action
29:15combat games a lot of action combat
29:19games my perspective is that it's not so
