00:18reveals and surprises there's a lot to
00:20talk about who better to talk about the
00:23present and future of Xbox than the

00:29friend not me Phil Spencer thank you and
00:32welcome to IGN live thanks thanks Ryan
00:36thanks everybody so your energy is
00:38incredible we have one hour together on
00:42the dot and we have some friends coming
00:44in halfway through some other awesome
00:45Xbox developers so people actually build
00:48games I yeah I I don't want to waste a
00:50second with you here and I want to start
00:52uh I'm I'm I said this earlier on this
00:54stage I think you just had the best
00:56showcase you've ever had I really mean I
00:58said it before you got here thank you
01:00Ryan it really was fantastic now I know
01:03you plan these things months and months
01:05in advance for anybody that doesn't know
01:06that like planning for this starts like
01:08the beginning of the year kind of thing
01:10it's crazy so I'm curious at what point
01:14do you with this one this year do you
01:16get a feeling that oh this one's looking
01:19pretty good yeah you know don't be
01:22humble just tell us the real answer
01:24here honestly like until our fans the
01:28customers you guys give us the feedback
01:31like Aaron Greenberg and I were talking
01:34about this two weeks ago now the thing
01:36that probably hit me the most was
01:39obviously just The Passion of the teams
01:41of putting their amazing work on stage
01:44and seeing so many teams do great work
01:46but it was basic I'd say two months ago
01:49when I just looked at the kind of scale
01:52of the franchises how much work the
01:54teams were doing to show up and the way
01:56they did and the partners that we had in
01:58the show like was I was in awe of this
02:01show there's a couple games I want to
02:03ask you about specifically before we'll
02:05talk about some other stuff too but um
02:09the the one that I I said right for me
02:11of all the great stuff from today stole
02:14the show for me was something I wasn't
02:16expecting to see today again which was
02:18perfect dark I knew you were going to
02:22Dark a first person spy Espionage some
02:27Parkour a little mirror edge in there
02:30um all playable like all in game
02:33somebody and that game's been cooking
02:35for a long time we know that we followed
02:37Partners at Crystal been doing amazing
02:38work yeah Crystal was brought in to help
02:40it keep going so what has it been like
02:42for you to kind of follow the very long
02:45trajectory of that game from you know it
02:48that started with with Daryl Gallagher
02:50starting a studio and down the street
02:52yeah and now we're finally here like so
02:54how has how has it been kind of getting
02:57to this point with perfect dark yeah you
02:59know in parallel building a studio while
03:01you're building a game and something
03:04that Perfect Dark back to N64 and
03:06obviously us with pdz on 360 like
03:09there's just such anticipation for that
03:12game and I I really appreciate
03:14everybody's patience cuz we've been
03:16talking about this for a long time and
03:19like my team can verify this when I saw
03:21it I said this is the one that Ryan's
03:24going to love cuz we know his love for
03:26spy and I said this is the one and just
03:30so proud of the team um and it it really
03:32just came together so well and I mean a
03:35cool little story uh Daryl had our other
03:38Studio heads down at the studio just
03:40yesterday and walk through that same
03:42section in game to show them like this
03:45is a game being played and I I love
03:47seeing our community of creators coming
03:49together that way well another uh the
03:52one more thing which we were all hoping
03:53for and got was a new Gears of War game
03:58wasn't it was wasn't gear six it was not
04:01it was not gear six so well you know
04:04you're you have a visibility into
04:06everything but but I'm curious when
04:07you're in a meeting with maybe it's Matt
04:10booty maybe it's Allan Hartman but the
04:12Coalition folks like when you learn that
04:16they've gone down the eay road the
04:18prequel Road rather than gears like what
04:20was your reaction when when you found
04:22out that that was going to be the next
04:25direction for Gears of War well you know
04:26this we we've had some changes in
04:29leadership at the studio Rod who was
04:31there is now leading Diablo for us so I
04:34actually thought a Diablo game I'm
04:35playing a ton of I thought it was a nice
04:38opportunity for that team to establish
04:41their gears right and going on following
04:43on Gears five just because the numerical
04:45thing like I think it would just it this
04:47was an opportunity for them to take it
04:49back to An Origin story that I know you
04:51know that has a lot of like real depth
04:53to it in terms of emergence day um and
04:56tell that story through the Coalition as
04:58it is today I thought like what a great
05:00opportunity I was excited and then we
05:02you probably saw I know you heard it the
05:04Mad World tune in the play piece oh yeah
05:07like for those that us remember the 360
05:09commercial like how iconic was that so
05:12when they went back and sourced that and
05:14brought that through the piece I think
05:16it just showed that they they they kind
05:18of stay true to what gears is but tell a
05:20new story new arc now you're wearing a
05:23very cool Xbox Pride shirt today but a
05:26year ago at the Xbox showcase you freak
05:29out people like me by wearing a hexen
05:33shirt which is a game that I have very
05:35near and dear to my heart and uh now
05:39well then too you had just acquired
05:42hexen you owned that as part of many
05:44other things but then
05:46today I I see the reveal for Doom the
05:49Dark Ages and I go wait a second how
05:52awesome was that hold on are like are
05:54are you secretly making a hexen game in
05:58the Doom Universe cuz I know you and I
06:00share the love for this yeah no I would
06:02like to say I'm I'm actually smart
06:04enough to predict anything like that I
06:05wasn't but definitely if you look at
06:08Doom Dark Ages and thanks to Marty and
06:10the team they let me introduce that
06:13right so I got to come out and like I
06:15was going through all my old school
06:16stories for those as old as me who
06:18remember it's Doom one on a floppy going
06:21my only PC that could run it was my pc
06:23at Microsoft so I would sneak in at
06:25night put it in so I could play so the
06:28opportunity to stand there and get to
06:30announce a doom and then Doom Dark Ages
06:32which definitely has some hexen in it um
06:36and I just thought Hugo and the team
06:38fantastic work I'm so proud now I can't
06:40help but bring up uh something that's
06:42been a topic of conversation a lot
06:45recently which is uh that Doom the Dark
06:48Ages is also going to ship on PS5
06:50something that you've done with some
06:52other games so can you can you from a
06:55business level like can you walk me
06:56through you know you paid 7.5 billion
07:00to acquire Bethesda andx so what what's
07:03the calculus like what's the the process
07:05there for deciding like okay new Doom
07:08let's keep it multiplatform as it has
07:11been or rather than or just put it on
07:13Xbox so what's what's kind of the the
07:15thought process there well on Doom it's
07:17definitely one of those franchises that
07:19has a history on so many devices yeah I
07:21think they have like Doom running on a
07:22lawnmower somewhere um when you go back
07:25but um and you know it's a franchise
07:27that I think everybody deserves to play
07:29um I'm really proud of what the team and
07:31to be honest like I was in a meeting
07:33with Marty and the team a couple years
07:34ago and I asked Marty what he wanted to
07:36do um and he said he wanted to ship it
07:38on on all platforms I said let's go do
07:39that like it was as simple as that now I
07:44want to bring it back though because I
07:46get a lot of questions about hey if I'm
07:48an Xbox owner what does it mean and what
07:51I want to say and I thought it showed up
07:52so well in the the show today you saw an
07:56amazing collection of games that are
07:57coming to Xbox that they're going into
08:02one and Game Pass showed up so well if
08:06you buy the game on our console you get
08:08to play it on PC you buy it on PC you
08:10get so the cross entitlement stuff is
08:13all there you know and and we're focus
08:15on future Hardware with forward
08:18compatibility our commitment to our Xbox
08:21customers is you're going to get the
08:22opportunity to buy or subscribe to the
08:24game we're going to support the game on
08:26other screens and you are going to see
08:27more of our games on more platforms
08:29and we just see that as a benefit to the
08:31franchises that we're building and we
08:33see that from players and the players
08:35love to be able to play well uh thank
08:39go I I have to do the journalistically
08:42responsible thing now and bring the
08:44bring the mood down otherwise the the
08:46the internet would tear me apart so I
08:48wanted to ask you you you haven't really
08:50commented publicly much in the last
08:52couple months so I wanted to ask you
08:54about the studio closures and and Tango
08:57Gameworks and some of the you know some
08:58of the thoughts behind the the decision
09:00making there I mean you had a a critical
09:03darling in Hi-Fi rush you had uh folks
09:06like Aaron Greenberg saying it checked
09:08all these boxes for us and did all the
09:10the right things here so uh like what
09:14walk me through the the the the decision
09:17of of why really Tango specifically not
09:20to not to disrespect the other Studios
09:22that that uh were closed but that was
09:24the one that really seemed to kind of
09:25stick in the community's craw a bit so
09:28I'm hoping here you can take the
09:30opportunity to to address that closure
09:33and and some of the recent changes in
09:34Xbox yeah the closure of any team is
09:39hard obviously on the individuals there
09:41hard on the team and I try to spend all
09:43of my focus as you said I haven't been
09:45talking publicly about this because
09:47right now is a time for us to focus on
09:48the team and the individuals it's
09:50obviously a decision that's very hard on
09:52them and I want to make sure through
09:54Severance and other things that we're
09:55doing the right thing for the
09:57individuals on the team it's not about
09:59my BR it's not about Xbox BR it's about
10:02those teams in the end I've said over
10:04and over I have to run a sustainable
10:06business inside the company and grow and
10:09that means sometimes I have to make hard
10:10decisions that frankly are not decisions
10:12I love but decisions that somebody needs
10:14to go make um we will continue to go
10:17forward we will continue to invest in
10:19what we're trying to go do in in Xbox
10:22and build the best business that we can
10:23which ensures we can continue to do
10:25shows like the one we just did on uh
10:30on the you know the Activision Blizzard
10:32Saga you know that's that's all been
10:35that probably maybe Saga well I don't
10:38know did did it it from just from
10:40covering it and watching it it felt like
10:42it put like five years on my life as
10:44somebody that covers Xbox I can't
10:45imagine how it was for you but as that
10:48came to a close uh and you started
10:51integrating them into Activision
10:54Blizzard King into Xbox Studios ha has
10:57that changed the way you think about
11:00running the business at all with because
11:02the organization just got quite a bit
11:04larger like almost overnight in a in a
11:07sense um no I mean we're still and I I
11:10hope we show this today we're going to
11:12be about building great games for people
11:15to play about giving them choice on Xbox
11:17to go play we've got a broader library
11:20of games the thing I'm starting to see
11:22which I really love is the organic
11:25collaboration between our teams that are
11:27coming out um and trying to build at
11:29community of creators that I mean you
11:32and I will go back to the time of Xbox
11:34where we basically had four games Fable
11:37Fort gears Halo and we would just
11:39literally every four years and I would
11:42have to come to E3 and I'd somehow try
11:44to make those four games seem different
11:46every year for the community um and now
11:49what we have in in gaming is just an
11:51amazing collection of of teams and
11:53franchises that are doing great work so
11:56I think you know I I feel an added
11:58responsib ility is somebody who loves
12:00this industry for the franchises that
12:02show up on our stage um but I still
12:05think in the end it's about putting
12:07amazing games out like I'm really proud
12:09of the work that Ninja Theory did with
12:11hellblade and how hellblade's been the
12:13response to that and we have an amazing
12:16internal team now that's focused on us
12:19doing a bunch of unreal games as an
12:21example um and then you see things like
12:23south of midnight which might have been
12:25my game of the show I thought it looked
12:26so good um you got dark you have gears
12:31so like for us as the organization gets
12:33bigger I think it's just more important
12:35that we can take bets together uh and
12:38try to do Innovative creative things um
12:40and that will continue to drive us all
12:42right well we've got to take a very

13:15Phil Spencer joining us at IGN
13:20live we still have so much more to talk
13:22about Phil um you know you and I in the
13:25past have have talked a lot about the
13:27past of Xbox cuz there's a lot of great
13:30memories but the the present as we saw
13:32today on the Xbox game showcase is great
13:35the future looks super promising here uh
13:38and and the the Xbox business has has
13:40changed dramatically dramatically uh
13:44just in the past few years and so on the
13:47on you know with when you make a a a 70
13:51almost 70 billion doll
13:53acquisition do do you start hearing from
13:57your bosses more or are they still
14:00staying out of your way and letting you
14:01run the business because that's you know
14:03that's not an insignificant amount of
14:04money to spend on grow definitely not an
14:07significant amount of money no I the
14:09support we get from the company and my
14:11boss is the CEO of Microsoft Sati
14:13Nadella hey Satia um you know we are
14:17given a ton of leeway to go and run and
14:20grow our business but I'll say the thing
14:23that we challenge ourselves to do is to
14:26try to do new things like I think if I
14:28go back back eight years ago we said hey
14:32we're going to go ship all of our games
14:34on PC and console and if you buy one on
14:36one you get it on the other and I got
14:38some like reaction from people of this
14:41the worst decision ever like this is
14:43going to be the end of
14:44Xbox we announced Game Pass and we
14:47started doing Game Pass and I know some
14:48people looked at that and said oh you're
14:50going to teach people that games are
14:52free um and you're going to undermine
14:54the value in games and what I can say
14:55sitting here today from our decisions on
14:58Cloud on Game Pass pass on Console like
15:00right now we have more Xbox console
15:03users than we've ever had in the history
15:08gu and even when I look at things like
15:12the impact of Game Pass cuz I watch that
15:14and I Love Game Pass like how it showed
15:16up in the show today I think was
15:17fantastic but we also want people to be
15:19able to buy games so I go back and I
15:21look and I say okay over the last five
15:23years what's happened to Third Party
15:25game Game sales on our platform we're on
15:29up double digits every year over the
15:30last five years on game sales on Xbox
15:34consoles so when I look at it I will
15:36just you know doing a70 billion
15:39acquisition will push us to try to do
15:41more it'll push us on cloud it'll push
15:43us to go find customers in new places
15:46continue to think about access to
15:47amazing games enabling creators to do
15:50great work but I actually think for the
15:52team that's just a self motivation that
15:54the team has and it's fun to be a part
15:56of Black Ops 6 day one game pass Black
15:58Ops sweet right like people said I
16:02wouldn't do that yeah most people in
16:03this room have probably been used to
16:05spending 60 70 bucks on it every year
16:07now if they're already subscribing to
16:09Game Pass and good to go but it's a
16:11choice like we didn't say to anybody you
16:14have to subscribe to play if you want to
16:16buy Black Ops it's great it's it's great
16:19for us it's great for the developer if
16:21you want to subscribe it's also great
16:22like I want to give you the choice on
16:25how you play your games and who you play
16:27with and not try to do slimy platform
16:30things to force you to do what I want
16:32you to do give the players choice and
16:35what they want to do and who they play
16:36with so the the Activision Blizzard
16:40thing you know we watched it play out uh
16:43in in court rooms and Regulatory places
16:46with my tie on yeah like I I'm curious
16:49what what was the biggest unexpected
16:51challenge for you and the team at Xbox
16:54during the course of that you know for
16:57the management team like aab Bond Lori
17:00Wright Linda Norman who's our lead
17:02lawyer at Xbox like the distract we all
17:05had our same job of running Xbox and
17:08doing the things that we needed to go do
17:10Matt booty but then we actually added
17:12like this second job in the time of
17:15having to work through Regulatory and I
17:17didn't like it's it's my fault as the
17:19head of the business I didn't really
17:20internalize that in the beginning of
17:22what a drain that would be on the team
17:24and I think we saw that I think we saw
17:26it in our execution on a couple things
17:29that we were doing multiple things at a
17:31time that we hadn't planned for and I'll
17:32say it's really nice to be post the
17:34acquisition working with those amazing
17:36teams I mean I I how they showed up in
17:38our show today fantastic right I just
17:41thought it was great I mean we had World
17:43of Warcraft in an Xbox show like it's
17:45just crazy was there ever a point in the
17:48process cuz it it really between the CMA
17:50and the FTC and and all these places was
17:53there ever a point where you thought oh
17:55this might this might not happen like
17:58this might get get get uh rejected well
18:01we always have to plan for all
18:02contingencies like we consider
18:04everything like you have to in running
18:06the business but we felt like we were on
18:08the side of right like and if meaning we
18:11weren't doing this so we could pull Call
18:13of Duty from PlayStation players it was
18:15never in our plans I mean I think my
18:17whole inbox leaked on the internet so if
18:19anybody wanted to find that that was the
18:21plan you would find it somewhere and it
18:23wasn't there so we believed we were on
18:25in the right on getting this deal done
18:28um so we stayed convicted but there were
18:30dark days like with the you know when
18:32the CMA came out and said no this isn't
18:34going to go through and you know the the
18:36drag on the teams the teams at
18:37Activision Blizzard and King like
18:39they're dealing with this uncertainty so
18:41it's so nice to have it passed behind us
18:44and now we can just focus on building
18:48together you know on that topic like we
18:51talk about all these huge changes to not
18:54just the industry but again specifically
18:55your business the Xbox business over the
18:57last five or so years
18:59what is today like as we sit here now
19:02what's the thesis statement what's the
19:04modus operandi for for Xbox today and
19:08how has it changed over the last five
19:11years yeah and I I see some of the
19:13feedback that our messaging from some
19:15people that maybe our messaging hasn't
19:17been consistent and I always hear the
19:18feedback and I take it like feedback is
19:20is great I will say from early on we
19:23would say when everybody plays we all
19:25win like how do we get in a place where
19:27everybody can play play video games and
19:31we've made different progress on PC now
19:34like PC is a huge business for us we
19:36love that we have so many PC players
19:37more than we've ever had our console's
19:39doing so well but I think if you sit
19:43back and you try to frame this industry
19:46through the lens of the tradition of who
19:48sold a console today and that's the only
19:50solution to making gaming better I think
19:53you know Xbox is doing something
19:54different than that we love our consoles
19:57we love our PC players but really about
19:59creators and players and amazing games
20:03them it has admittedly for all of us
20:07creators players it has been a a weird
20:10generation because it started weird in
20:12this pandemic and I'm curious would you
20:15do anything differently in this in this
20:18Xbox series generation if you could kind
20:21of go back and and tell yourself I'm not
20:23really a regrets guy like I don't like
20:26there's aund decisions I make that yeah
20:28like in hindsight maybe I would make it
20:30different with all the data but you got
20:32to just bet you got to bet on yourself
20:34and bet on the teams have a vision of
20:36what you're trying to do when you get
20:38punched in the face you get back up and
20:40you try to go do things so like I I'm
20:43not really one who looks back and say I
20:45wish I would have done this or that um
20:47you know if you're in a position like
20:49this you you just with the team that we
20:51have you just have to believe and you
20:52have to keep pushing forward and take
20:54the feedback from amazing customers that
20:56talk to us every day
21:00has the calculus CH you kind of spoke to
21:02Game Pass a little bit and how you know
21:04how much of a value proposition is has
21:06increased after today even but has the
21:08calculus changed on on how much Game
21:11Pass subscriptions are valued at
21:15Microsoft versus direct sales like you
21:18know what because now you when Game Pass
21:20started it was wow this sounds really
21:22cool and you've pledged to put every
21:25first party release in there and at the
21:27beginning there weren't a lot of those
21:28but now you're almost like you had a
21:30whole show full of them so kind of
21:33what's how does how does that metric for
21:35Success like how does Game Pass
21:37influence the the success of the
21:39business the thing I look at every
21:41morning is how many people played on our
21:44platforms and how long did they play if
21:47they played through the subscription or
21:48they paid buying their games or they're
21:50playing a free-to-play game I honestly
21:52like that's not the most important thing
21:54I so you know Game Pass I love it I
21:56think it's the thing I really love about
21:59Game Pass let me think in our show today
22:01a game like mixtape like a game like
22:04mixtape is a game that we can go um
22:07Nathan and Val and I can have a
22:09conversation and say with a team that's
22:11been in in Game Pass before when you you
22:14think about the studio behind they had
22:16great success now we're going to do a
22:18second game or like winterboro another
22:20like just awesome game that we can go
22:23invest in and game PASS gives us an
22:25ability you can go invest in Call of
22:27Duties and Diablos all day and we love
22:29that but you also get to invest in new
22:31things that come out and we just think
22:33that's a really important part of the
22:35equation so we don't have like one Subs
22:37now Game Pass is up double digits like
22:39and most of it grow we we said it PC is
22:41growing really well Cloud's growing
22:43really well but if somebody decides they
22:45want to buy their games and build their
22:47Library peace like there's there's no we
22:50need to turn everybody into this or that
22:52we just want people to play I want to
22:54talk about Fallout for a second so you
22:59you guys are currently having an an
23:04moment yeah months so good so good
23:10uh but I C I can't help think about that
23:14a year or two ago I was sitting with
23:16Todd Howard with a camera rolling and
23:19and I asked him well you know Fallout 5
23:21is that you want to do that yourself or
23:23maybe now there's all these Xbox Studios
23:26you could you could maybe get have some
23:28help with it and said no I I want to
23:30that's going that's mine I'm direct that
23:32yeah but does Todd likes his things and
23:35but does the does the massive success of
23:38something like fall like Fallout I would
23:40I would argue is the is
23:42Xbox's biggest cultural moment in quite
23:45a while like it transcended outside of
23:47gaming yeah yeah yeah and so you know
23:49after the TV show blows up and there
23:51there'll be a season two and I'm sure
23:52it'll probably keep going past that do
23:55you do you talk to Todd about like you
23:58you know you can't you can't stop the
24:01Elder Scroll 6 and say go do Fallout 5
24:04but but you have all these Studios like
24:06do you have a conversation about like
24:08well how can we do a new like a big new
24:11Fallout while the the iron's really hot
24:14here with the TV show yeah I'll just say
24:17that Todd's recognized the success of
24:19the television show on his own right he
24:21didn't need me to kind of go and it's it
24:24is amazing to see how gaming is now
24:29playing such a role all up in pop
24:31culture if you go back like as an old
24:33comic nerd I go back like 10 years and
24:36it seemed like every Hollywood thing
24:37came from the comics and now you see
24:40video games in this art form that we've
24:41loved for so long whether it's the Mario
24:44movie Last of Us Fallout show like you
24:48see our creatives in our industry being
24:51recognized for the worlds and
24:53storytelling that they can go do um for
24:55us specifically fallout's been amazing
24:58and yeah Todd's kind of looking at the
25:00plans on what he's doing I'm not going
25:01to get into it but I'll say Todd has
25:04recognized the success on his own and is
25:06thinking through what that means uh I
25:09guess while we're on the subject have
25:11you seen the Elder Scroll six lately
25:13because I know you get to take a look at
25:17stuff I um I'm gonna I'll refrain from
25:22comment I think we all know what what
25:25you mean by that that's right Boomie Bo
25:29boy oh my goodness well ask Todd to you
25:33know know you can't hurry it up Todd
25:35we're we're waiting here pal um there's
25:38one one other thing I wanted to ask you
25:40about that I thought we actually might
25:42hear something about from you I mean you
25:44had a great show I'm not complaining but
25:47I thought well there's something that's
25:49been rumored that's been talked about we
25:51talked about on the pre-show there was a
25:52big reaction from our audience here and
25:54that is an Xbox handheld yeah yeah yeah
26:00so you are you're a guy I mean you have
26:04the gamer score to prove it like you you
26:08walk the walk you are not a guy that
26:10that runs the business and never touches
26:12a game you you actually pretty much do
26:14nothing but play video games and I mean
26:17that in a as a compliment I do work
26:20sometimes but yeah yeah but but really
26:22seriously like the I love that I don't
26:24do anything about play video gam it's
26:26kind of true the uh you know you've
26:28you've been building the business around
26:30this Mantra of of go where the players
26:32are you know whether it's on PC whether
26:34it's through so we should have handheld
26:36I think so I think we have a hand out
26:38you want to say anything about no I
26:40don't want to say I think you have to
26:41have Sarah on Sarah Bond our president
26:44of Xbox which is awesome um but like the
26:47future for us in Hardware is pretty
26:50awesome and the work that the team is
26:52doing um around different form factors
26:55different ways to play I'm incredibly
26:57excited about today was about the games
26:59yeah we showed some of our ex our gen n
27:02consolle Series S series X the work that
27:05we're doing but we will have a time to
27:07come out and talk more about platform
27:09and we can't wait to bring it to you
27:10guys all right I'm not going to let you
27:12off the hook quite one more time tried
27:15so hypothetically hypothetically
27:17hypothetically if if Microsoft did an
27:19Xbox gaming handheld you know PC device
27:23would it be a steam deck like dedicated
27:27hard piece of Hardware that I can play
27:28offline or would it be something I would
27:30need a Wi-Fi connection to stream things
27:33from no I think if you're what I'm
27:35finding I'll do it this way so I like my
27:38Rog Ally my rag Ally is my Lenovo Legion
