00:06we've all heard about it but what does
00:08it really mean the website game skinny
00:11no comment defines it as basically A
00:14Game's backstory it's all the elements
00:16that complement a principal narrative
00:18these details add depth and richness to
00:21the universe of a video game expanding
00:23its history outside the main plot
00:25alright enough of that snooze Fest uh
00:30this page was empty it's basically
00:31what's going on behind the scenes it's
00:33the explanation for why things are the
00:36way they are when we think of games we
00:37think of the story that's what motivates
00:39the players actions why am I crushing
00:42live animals to save the princess why am
00:45I forcing live animals to fight each
00:47other to become the champion why am I
00:49partaking in so much animal abuse A
00:53Game's story directly affects the player
00:55and the player directly affects it A
00:57Game's lore on the other hand are things
00:59that have already happened the stories
01:01before this one so while most games have
01:03a story not all games have lore which is
01:06stupid a lot of games just give you a
01:09half-assed backstory that justifies the
01:11current story and call it a day which
01:13makes it so much more special when
01:15developers actually take the time to
01:16craft a universe that explains why this
01:19guy is such a bald freaking weirdo
01:23oh it's because of the PTSD okay never
01:25mind Fallout New Vegas is the Big Daddy
01:28when it comes to lore not that big daddy
01:31but you got your head in the right place
01:32champ good job you have a very specific
01:35goal in mind when you start the game
01:36find this [Â __Â ] but you almost
01:39immediately forget about it once you
01:42head out and gets and get sucked into
01:46the story and politics of the Wasteland
01:48I mean you could Breeze through
01:50everything and just track down this h m
01:52suit but it's almost impossible to not
01:54stumble upon the aftermath of some crazy
01:56[Â __Â ] I don't even know if I'm allowed to
01:58show this speaking of stumbling upon
02:01some crazy [Â __Â ] the Japanese version of
02:03Paper Mario the Thousand-Year Door has a
02:05crime scene for you just walk all over
02:07what could have even happened here man
02:10the older Paper Mario games do a really
02:12good job of crafting a living world one
02:14where Mario and Luigi can truly be
02:16themselves almost every NPC you talk to
02:19tells you something about the world that
02:21brings it to life in that same sphere
02:22you've got the [Â __Â ] mind-blowing
02:25Pokemon series with so many random
02:27tidbits of lore there's so much
02:29potential for these games so it really
02:30makes me glad to see that they're
02:32putting creativity and taking risks with
02:35yes games this year I would love to talk
02:38about all the World building that game
02:40freak has done in the past 12 months but
02:42one I didn't play Legends Arceus and two
02:44I don't want to spoil anything from
02:45Pokemon Violet and silver from Pokemon
02:48scarlet and violet because those games
02:50are actually pretty dope but don't you
02:52worry champ we've still got plenty of
02:53stuff to go over with creepy Pokedex
02:56entries the phenomenon that is unknown
02:59and how ditto is a failed clone of Mew
03:02but that kind of dips into Theory area
03:04and we're talking about lore and that's
03:06just a theory a game
03:09thanks for watching Pokedex entries are
03:12a great way to give some insight into
03:13this world of extraordinary creatures it
03:16explains that ride on actually became
03:18smarter by only using Italian legs yeah
03:21still waiting for that one doc still
03:22waiting drifloon is rumored to grab the
03:24hands of children to drag them away to
03:27the afterlife it also dislikes heavy
03:30children if for some reason its body
03:32burst its Soul spills out with the
03:35screaming sound please stop adding lore
03:37to this one Torchic a fire burns inside
03:39so it feels very warm to hug the Pokemon
03:42unknown is a total missed opportunity
03:45it's pokedex entry claims this Pokemon
03:47is shaped like ancient writing it is a
03:50mystery as to which came first Research
03:52into this topic is ongoing but nothing
03:54is known funny but can we do something
03:57about that that sounds really cool
03:59alright that's enough of Pokemon I've
04:00been going over it for like seven hours
04:03like The Seven Hour war and Half-Life
04:06which is the most important event
04:07between the two games and is hardly ever
04:10mentioned damn are we ready to get into
04:13back when valve made games not excuses
04:16zero days off grind every [Â __Â ] day no
04:19bad vibes no they had an insane track
04:21record of making great games and just
04:24sprinkling just just a tiny little bit
04:26of lore on top not nothing too crazy
04:28Team Fortress 2 is a game about shooting
04:30guns leaving behind funny sprays
04:33leaving behind funny sprays and
04:36diversity but what's that there's a
04:38reason behind the fighting red and blue
04:40are not just colors they're companies
04:42started by two brothers who are fighting
04:44over the land that their father left to
04:46them and their names are Redmond and
04:51I'm definitely going to keep that in
04:52mind when I'm getting pwned in the game
04:54you know this little kids chair might be
04:57a bad decision it's really squeezing my
04:59cheeks right now if you're able to pay
05:01attention over your friends screaming
05:03and left for dead too you come to
05:04realize the scale of this virus the
05:07tales of the people who had to endure
05:09this living hell and how your hashtag
05:11Squad is only alive because you guys are
05:16I mean why else would you be walking
05:19around then comes portal
05:24I may or may not have written this whole
05:26thing just so I could talk about portal
05:28guess we'll never know I know Half-Life
05:30is the bigger series that gets all the
05:35more deserves it more not only is the
05:37story genuinely amazing the lore is
05:40[Â __Â ] fascinating I wish I could do
05:42whatever they did in that Jim Carrey
05:44movie where he doesn't just make silly
05:46faces and just forget everything about
05:48the game so I can go into it blind no it
05:51is not a problem the first game is
05:53already a strange and unsettling
05:55experience and then by the end of it you
05:57start finding these weird little layers
05:58that are just totally out of place
06:00you're given such limited information
06:02about the world so finding these little
06:04dens just raises way more questions than
06:07they answer who made these why are they
06:10here can you really cook beans on a PC
06:12it makes the already creepy atmosphere
06:15of the game just so much worse you see a
06:17few more of these until the game ends
06:19and of course there's no explanation it
06:22wasn't until a few days before the
06:24launch of Portal 2 that valve released a
06:26digital comic that bridged the gap
06:28between the two games and damn it I
06:30don't want to read a comic I don't know
06:32which way they go Portal 2 has a few
06:34more ratman layer and it looks like he
06:36took some art lessons since the last
06:38game damn okay these are pretty good
06:40these ratman dens do not affect the
06:43gameplay but they make you realize that
06:45you're not the only one in this facility
06:48Stewie Griffin uh [Â __Â ] sweat rag okay
06:52going off the game alone we don't know
06:54when these very superstitions
07:02occurred or what happened to the person
07:04behind them these dens are one of the
07:06few times you can even see evidence of
07:09humans in the game the only other human
07:11interaction happens in the second game
07:13when you take a little slip and help
07:15I've fallen a million feet and I can't
07:17get up and find yourself in the old
07:19parts of aputure Laboratories here
07:22you're Guided by the recordings of Cave
07:23Johnson one of the biggest influences on
07:272012 internet humor as you learn about
07:29the company's history and we're getting
07:31into the story this is only about the
07:33lore this whole section of the game
07:34might be one of my favorite sections of
07:36any game it's just so freaking cool dude
07:39you learn about how aperture went from
07:41being an Innovative and successful
07:43company into a failing company on the
07:45brink of bankruptcy the pre-recorded
07:47messages paint a picture of a much more
07:49lively aperture signs one where
07:51candidates actually consented to these
07:54very weird tests I know I've been
07:56talking about this one series way too
07:58long but let me just leave you with this
08:00before you even go down into the depths
08:03of the Laboratories you see a science
08:05project in the facility created by no
08:07not Jimmy Neutron but you
08:14overall the portal series is just really
08:17great and if you haven't played it go
08:20buy it man I'll buy it for you nothing I
08:22even mentioned today goes into the
08:24gameplay I what was I even talking about
08:26again so why is lore important well do
08:30you want some dumbass going on about
08:31your game for 20 minutes over 10 years
08:33after it was released
08:36all right I don't blame you all these
08:38things I talked about don't have any
08:40effect on the gameplay but they make
08:41these worlds feel so much more alive
08:43it's like you're being given a sneak
08:45peek into another world which is a
08:47really amazing thing erect in a
08:49dispenser all right I did not need to
08:51see that much when everything in the
08:52game is about a player and there's no
08:54development outside of their point of
08:56view it makes the game feel really
08:58shallow and one-dimensional if you
09:00didn't come through and fix everything
09:02wow this is awesome thanks the world
09:06inside the game would still be
09:07interesting you could still imagine the
09:09characters everyday lives they feel like
09:11more than just ones and zeros that are
09:13there to make you feel better about
09:16hey thanks man I needed that I just
09:19really like when games have more to them
09:21than just what's on the surface and I
09:23think a lot of people feel the same way
09:24I mean look at all those Iceberg videos
09:27that blew up a little while back people
09:29want lore When You're Gone these desert
09:32freaks will still be roaming these
09:34Predators will still be abducting
09:36children and this old robot will still
09:39be doing tests in the end lore is
09:42important and love is blind thanks for
