00:00did I ever mention how much I hate
00:01industry standards you know I can
00:03understand someone going out of their
00:04way to create something the way they
00:06want to and it not working on an
00:07audience but what infuriates me is some
00:09guy in a suit whose speciality is
00:11[Â __Â ] business walking in and telling
00:13someone to do some [Â __Â ] he's held on
00:14the Great Vine that kind of make sense
00:16and then cuz apparently no one has any
00:18[Â __Â ] critical thinking skills people
00:19just go along with it and perpetuate it
00:21until it becomes a [Â __Â ] infallible
00:23lore of Storytelling despite the fact
00:25that everyone's doing it and 10 seconds
00:26of research into the unpopular stuff
00:28would show that there's a mountain of
00:29evidence to prove that it doesn't
00:31actually make any [Â __Â ] difference
00:33personally this is one of the reasons I
00:34love Hunter Hunter so much I mean maybe
00:37it's cuz it comes from an early time or
00:38maybe it's just cuz Tashi doesn't give a
00:40[Â __Â ] I yeah no it's definitely the
00:42second one but hunter hunter has like
00:44none of this you got a guy like riding a
00:46dragon or something just like [Â __Â ] it
00:47add another Dragon why not it's creative
00:49medium go [Â __Â ] yourself oh what's that
00:51industry I have to start on an action
00:55fishing okay okay I mean maybe not how
00:57about Bland ass main characters [Â __Â ]
01:00that [Â __Â ] child character not a teenager
01:02and he's got like easily identifiable
01:04personality traits and I don't mean like
01:05oh I can fit myself in his shoes
01:07identifiable I mean he feels distinctive
01:09and I can quickly identify what makes
01:11him different I've never mentioned it
01:12before but I really hate this idea of
01:14relatable characters as if stories are
01:17some [Â __Â ] roleplaying game like
01:18humans are incapable of empathy and we
01:20had to make a story all about us to give
01:22a [Â __Â ] Tashi also didn't fall into the
01:23other Pitfall of child characters a
01:25realism as opposed to plausibility it's
01:27so refreshing to me to see child
01:29characters aren't bratty and useless but
01:31they still feel like kids of course
01:32they're playful and lack certain adult
01:34experiences sometimes really important
01:36adult experiences hey left the as a kid
01:39never Le sex head do you want this you
01:42know cuz I think character investment is
01:44effectively the same thing as friendship
01:45you don't befriend an [Â __Â ] and if you
01:47do it's because you're focusing on a
01:48different quality like they're funny or
01:50something you shouldn't let a strict
01:51sense of realism control your story it's
01:53creative medium go [Â __Â ] yourself I
01:55really feel like hunter hunter gets this
01:57actually every character is introduced
01:58with some kind of reason to just give a
02:00[Â __Â ] about them in the York new ark I
02:02swear Tashi just makes a bunch of
02:03characters purely to sacrifice to uan
02:05just to build his character and then
02:07when he's built up he sacrificed in the
02:09same way to kurpa because kurer is your
02:11god and and gods require
02:21sacrifices oh that sounds sexual they
02:25all show off some kind of redeeming
02:26trait or relevance to a pre-existing
02:28plotline before expecting you to take
02:30any Exposition about them in fact I'd
02:33equate the series to Log Horizon
02:34actually the character design in both
02:36these series are stupidly well-rounded
02:38in fact I'd actually say it's got the
02:39same problems as it too like okay I'm
02:41about to suck Hunter Hunter's dick for 6
02:43minutes plus because I think it gets a
02:44lot of things right but like Log Horizon
02:46I do think it has like one single large
02:48factor that pulls it back from a huge
02:50amount of success granted I think Hunter
02:52Hunter has a little less World
02:53Exposition and more exposition to give
02:55characters the logic to move them from
02:56place to place and plot point to plot
02:58point but basically the same concept
03:00lots of exposition but the exposition is
03:02in surface of creating a smarter plot
03:04despite the exposition though I think
03:06more sha and should strive for the
03:07clever fight design at least one of the
03:10Fantastic things about Hunter Hunter is
03:12that it doesn't think you're a [Â __Â ]
03:13[Â __Â ] and can really engage with this
03:15Dynamic battle of wits that's present in
03:17everything from the fights to the every
03:18movement within the plot and you can owe
03:20a lot of this to the genius power system
03:22which my God I need to have like a whole
03:23video on this beautiful thing if you're
03:25going to have a long running sha in
03:26having a well cemented system like this
03:28that gives you as much potential as it
03:30does should be a must cuz that's the
03:32beauty of long running two episodes of
03:34exposition can provide you with clever
03:35engaging situations for the next 20000
03:38at no extra cost oh and the restraint
03:40vow system is the most amazing plot
03:42device that allows for such powerful
03:44moments because eh I digress I should
03:47save the battle system for another video
03:49oh man this song is so
04:01the other thing that separates Hunter
04:02Hunter is the fact that there is no fan
04:05service I don't think that counts now I
04:08used to think fan service was fine I
04:09thought as long as you didn't bust it
04:10out in emotional scenes it wasn't
04:12distracting but you know what I don't
04:14know about that anymore after watching
04:15Hunter Hunter and berserk there was just
04:17something nicer about these series they
04:19felt dignified and self-respecting I
04:21mean at first I thought this was
04:23Association bias I I arbitrarily
04:25associate fan service with a lack of
04:26maturity and as a result I don't want to
04:28associate myself with the ser that uses
04:30it I didn't like fanes not because there
04:31wasn't inherently anything bad about it
04:34just because of what it was associated
04:35with a lack of maturity I call that a
04:37bias because fan service doesn't
04:38inherently mean mature you can
04:40absolutely have a deep plot and
04:41three-dimensional characters and also
04:43have tits flopping about nothing
04:45inherent about fan service stops you
04:46from doing that hell some things make
04:48fan servers a part of that but then I
04:51realized the real reason why people
04:52don't like fan servers I noticed there's
04:54a connection it has to another Concept
04:55in design that like fan service also
04:57gets a bad fat and that's jump scares
05:00see the thing is that neither of these
05:01two are real engagements sure they
05:04create a reaction from your player/
05:05audience but what I notice about them is
05:07that neither of these two use your mind
05:09fan serves and jump scares are
05:11instinctual not mindful when you're
05:14given a challenge you think about how to
05:15solve it when you're given a world you
05:17think about what's over that Hill when
05:18you're given tips you're not using your
05:20head you're just using your head and I
05:22hear what you're saying if jump scares
05:23are instinctual well wouldn't horror
05:25games be instinctual as
05:27well was that a pop T jump scare do you
05:31notice how you can quote unquote scare
05:32anyone without even making like a scary
05:35face it's because jump scares aren't
05:37actually inherently scary they make you
05:39Flinch it's an instinctual response to
05:41Danger it doesn't feel like anything
05:43it's a shot of adrenaline and your body
05:44moves by itself now combine that with a
05:46creepy buildup and then you might have
05:48something that feels Justified and real
05:50but if you're making your audience
05:51Flinch constantly without any fear or
05:53potentially you're putting them in a
05:54situation where they go through the
05:55whole experience so often that the
05:57buildup no longer scares them and you're
05:59still jump scaring then you might have a
06:01negative reaction so yeah maybe people
06:03react poorly to Fan servers because
06:05unlike core engagements it's instinctual
06:07fan service aside I think just in
06:09general Hunter Hunter feels a lot more
06:10dignified than other shaen like for
06:12instance a lot of shaen feel the need to
06:13go for these crazy character designs and
06:15while I appreciate the uniqueness of
06:17that a lot of it comes without reason
06:19and they just don't feel very grounded
06:21in contrast Hunter Hunter Tunes this way
06:23the [Â __Â ] back so characters kind of feel
06:25like human beings and it instead
06:26transfers that uniqueness to nen Powers
06:29the one that's already inherently going
06:31to have an explanation every n power has
06:33a practical application so now it's not
06:35just [Â __Â ] weird when a minor
06:36character has some stupid look going on
06:38and you know you're never going to get
06:39an explanation for it human pretty
06:41accurately describes Hunter Hunter as a
06:42whole actually a lot of the villains the
06:44Phantom troop in particular feel like
06:46real people they banter with each other
06:48and clearly have feelings actually
06:50failed to mention it about hoker in my
06:51top 10 list but he definitely does have
06:53this and if you've seen that list I
06:55mentioned humanization on like two of
06:56the antagonists it's like a stupidly
06:58rare trait for for some reason my
07:00theories on humanization are a little
07:01vague right now so I'm just going to not
07:03go into details but maybe when I've made
07:05some progress on that I'll do a phantom
07:06troop case study but for now there you
07:08go distinctive strong characters
07:10intelligent moments thought out battle
07:12systems removal of fanss and grounded
07:14characters go and improve your genre
07:16Japanese companies that don't watch my
07:18channel actually I say that but it's
07:19been a while since Hunter Hunter came
07:21out now and you know what it's a good
07:23day cuz I honestly feel like we' started
07:24to see a shift in these industry
07:26standards I also don't care enough to
07:27throw stuff on the screen to prove that
07:29because uh [Â __Â ] you it's creative
07:32medium oh man I can't wait until 5 years
07:34from now we have an entirely new
07:36selection of [Â __Â ]
