00:00is the meta certificate program actually
00:03worth it that is going to be the topic
00:05of today's video and we're going to be
00:06talking about how long it takes to
00:08complete the certificate the cost the
00:10demand the salary production value of
00:12the course the course's chances of
00:14lending you a job the value of the
00:16certificate overall the pros and cons of
00:18the cert and at the end i'm going to go
00:20over whether or not i think the
00:21certificate is worth it now meta has
00:23several other professional certificates
00:25that they've offered before but the ones
00:26i'm going to be talking about right now
00:28because they're super hot and they just
00:29dropped are going to be the front end
00:30developer and back end developer
00:32certificates so i'm going to be
00:34basically answering any question that
00:35you have on these certs and if i don't
00:37answer one of your questions go ahead
00:39comment down below i'm sure myself or
00:41somebody else in the community will be
00:43able to answer the question and if you
00:44have any experience with the certs
00:45yourself go ahead and comment them down
00:47below as well and if you enjoy videos
00:49like this go ahead and let me know by
00:50gently annihilating the like button and
00:53let's try to get to 3 000 likes on this
00:59so without further ado let's jump right
01:01into it by answering the question what
01:02exactly is the meta professional
01:04certificate program and second why is
01:07everybody talking about it right now so
01:08like i mentioned before meta previously
01:10known as facebook had released a few
01:12certificates before but they recently
01:14released two software development
01:16related courses one of them is on
01:17front-end development and the other one
01:19is on back-end development and these are
01:21introductory courses that are designed
01:23to get you a job and as little as seven
01:25months now their biggest competitor
01:27google has not released any
01:28comprehensive courses on software
01:30development and google is meta's biggest
01:32competitor so meta stepped up to the
01:34plate to provide this option and
01:35challenge google as well so there really
01:37is three main reasons to take these
01:40certificates one is to get your first
01:42entry-level job two would be to either
01:43get a raise or switch into a position
01:45that has a little bit more software
01:46development and then three would be to
01:47transition into a completely new career
01:50now the front-end course has nine
01:51different modules which i'll read off to
01:53you really quickly introduction of
01:54front-end development is the first
01:56module then programming with javascript
01:58then version control html and css
02:00in-depth react basics advanced react
02:03principles of ui and ux design front-end
02:05developer capstone and then coding
02:07interview preparation then the backend
02:09course has 10 modules introduction to
02:11back-end development programming in
02:13python version control databases django
02:16web framework apis the full stack cloud
02:19computing backend developer capstone and
02:22coding interview preparation so before i
02:23get into whether the meta certificate is
02:25worth it i want to briefly talk about
02:27the video i did last year where i talked
02:28about whether or not the google
02:30certificate programs were worth it now
02:32at the time the google certificate
02:33programs were relatively new and unknown
02:36kind of like the meta programs are now
02:38and to be honest the jury wasn't in on
02:39them yet as to whether they were worth
02:41it or not so in theory i did love the
02:43idea of certificates because college
02:44degrees in many cases teach people
02:46outdated information and they're
02:48unnecessary for many careers so these
02:50big well-respected companies like google
02:52started coming out with certificates
02:53that covered high demand jobs and the
02:56reason for that is because they couldn't
02:57find people that had the skills to fill
02:59these jobs themselves and college simply
03:01was not preparing people for these
03:03careers now imagine how frustrated these
03:05companies must have been to go through
03:07the trouble to basically create their
03:08own college curriculum to teach people
03:11the skills that college wasn't teaching
03:13them however since then i've recommended
03:14these to a bunch of different people
03:16i've gotten a lot of feedback and it's
03:17gone from a theory or a hypothesis to
03:20something that i routinely recommend to
03:22people depending on the career path
03:24they're trying to go down i was
03:25extremely skeptical about their claims
03:26last year when i did that video but at
03:28the end of the video i still gave it a
03:30thumbs up overall now here are a few
03:32comments from that video from people who
03:33actually took these certificates here's
03:35a guy who landed a six figure job after
03:37taking the google data analytics
03:39certificate in two months here's a guy
03:40who took the it certificate in one month
03:43and was able to land a job from it
03:44here's another guy who was in the
03:45process of taking the it certificate and
03:47was already getting messages from
03:48recruiters and here's another guy who
03:50took a certificate and got a job within
03:51a few months so yeah i think you get the
03:53idea a lot of the time these
03:54certificates right now are basically
03:56like a cheat code and who knows how long
03:58it's gonna last and the best time to get
04:00these certificates before they become
04:01saturated is right now right when they
04:03get released because these companies are
04:05extremely competitive with each other
04:06they're constantly trying to scalp
04:08talent for instance facebook has been on
04:10a rampage the last few years stealing
04:12talent from other fang or manga
04:14companies now on the front end
04:16professional certificate itself it says
04:18launch your career as a front-end
04:19developer build job ready skills for an
04:21in-demand career and earn a credential
04:23from meta no degree or prior experience
04:25required to get started it's also a
04:27shareable certificate and it's 100
04:29online so you can do it from anywhere
04:30you want as long as you have an internet
04:31connection and on top of that you can do
04:33it at your own pace and they say right
04:35here that it's a beginner level
04:36certificate and by the way there are
04:38actually ways of looking this up on
04:40linkedin so that recruiters and hiring
04:42managers can find you based on the
04:43certificates that you've taken so even
04:45if you aren't done with the certificate
04:46already if you just started taking it
04:48make sure to put that on your linkedin
04:50because people can actually start
04:51looking you up before you've even
04:53finished the certificate and if you want
04:54to follow along with me by the way i am
04:56going to provide links to both of the
04:57certificates i'll put them down in the
04:59description as well as the pinned
05:00comment below i am an affiliate for
05:02coursera so if you click the links i
05:03might get a small commission from that
05:05but to be honest with you it's not all
05:06that much and i would recommend coursera
05:08whether or not i was an affiliate for
05:10them i recommended them last year
05:11without being an affiliate at all for
05:13instance so how long does it take to
05:14complete these certificates well for
05:16front end it says approximately seven
05:17months and for back end it says
05:19approximately eight months now everybody
05:21knows it's easier to get a job as a
05:22front-end developer than a back-end
05:24developer that's common knowledge but at
05:26the same time there's a lot more people
05:27trying to land jobs in front end than
05:29there is in back-end so it could give
05:31you a small advantage if you're somebody
05:33who prefers more of a back-end developer
05:35type role now based off of the amount of
05:36time my students were reporting to me
05:38that it took them to get through the
05:39google search you know it says on there
05:40that it takes six months to get through
05:42the google it certification but many
05:44students were telling me it takes
05:46anywhere from like a couple weeks to two
05:47months at most for the data analytics
05:49cert it said six months most of the
05:51students were getting through it in two
05:52to three months now with that being said
05:54this isn't an itcert and no offense to
05:56my it peeps out there but you know
05:58software development is going to be
05:59harder than that for instance i monitor
06:01different types of boot camps out there
06:02and i t boot camps or digital marketing
06:04boot camps tend to get people jobs a lot
06:07faster than software developer boot
06:09camps do so for instance here's a
06:10bootcamp website they say it takes about
06:11seven months to get a job in digital
06:13marketing and 10 months for full stack
06:14web development here's another boot camp
06:16they say it takes about 14 weeks to get
06:19a job in it support which is about four
06:20and a half months whereas for java
06:22development it takes about nine months
06:24to get a job so based on my past
06:25experience i'm gonna guesstimate these
06:27certificates are gonna take somewhere
06:28between three to five months for you to
06:30complete and the front-end developer
06:31certificate will probably be easier and
06:33it won't take you as long but even if it
06:35takes you five months for the cost which
06:37we're going to go over in a bit the cost
06:38is extremely low it's going to be a much
06:40better deal than going to something like
06:42a coding boot camp which often times can
06:45take 18 months to get a job and they're
06:46going gonna charge you like ten to
06:47fifteen thousand dollars now with that
06:49being said one thing that's also great
06:51about this is it might save you a lot of
06:53time because you take the certificate
06:54and you realize you don't want to be a
06:57software developer that is great if you
06:59take this cert and halfway through it
07:01you realize you don't want to be a
07:02software developer congratulations you
07:04just saved yourself four to five years
07:06of time because a lot of people go to
07:08college get their degree get one year
07:10into their career or maybe they you know
07:12try to get a career and they can't get a
07:13job and they decide that it's not for
07:15them or a lot of people will go to
07:17college and halfway through their degree
07:18they decide they don't want to go into
07:19their career either so a lot of them
07:21will waste 5.1 years on average and 80
07:23000 because that's how long and how much
07:25it takes to get a bachelor's degree on
07:27average this is fine
07:29i'm okay with the events that are
07:31unfolding currently now the great thing
07:33about these certificates is they're
07:34going to teach you exactly what you need
07:36to know for the job because they're
07:37designed by companies who hire people
07:40for these positions so if you take this
07:41certificate and halfway through you
07:43realize it's not for you that is awesome
07:46it probably only costed you like maybe
07:47fifty to a hundred dollars and a few
07:49months of your life rather than eighty
07:51thousand dollars in debt and five years
07:52so in terms of the time it takes and how
07:54much time and opportunity cost it saves
07:56you this is a phenomenal option and this
07:59is what in my opinion really sets online
08:01courses and certificates apart from the
08:03competition it's a really cost effective
08:05and time effective way to figure out
08:07what you want to do with your life
08:08speaking of the cost let's talk about
08:10that next now i've gone over on this
08:12channel how much a college degree
08:13typically costs it's going to be 80k
08:15people go 40 000 in debt on average and
08:17it takes 5.1 years so it's extremely
08:19costly both to your wallet as well as
08:21your time then boot camps came along and
08:23they were a pretty good alternative to
08:25college and i've worked with a lot of
08:26students who have gone to boot camp
08:27sometimes that's the best option for
08:29people i recently worked with an
08:30international student who immigrated
08:32from brazil college wasn't an option for
08:33him so we figured out a way to get him a
08:35job with a bootcamp and he was able to
08:36land a job within six months as a
08:38software developer with that being said
08:40a lot of boot camps take something like
08:4218 months to get people jobs and they
08:43can cost 10 to 15 000 so they're very
08:46expensive and they can be even more
08:47expensive if you sign an isa or income
08:50share agreement coursera on the other
08:52hand for the professional certificates
08:5539.99 per month so let's say it takes
08:57you five months because i estimated this
08:59would take three to five months so
09:01that's pretty good can't really beat the
09:02value there next we're going to be
09:04talking about the demand so for the
09:06software developer certificates you can
09:08see that it is a career where there is a
09:10ton of demand if you go into it for
09:13instance on bls software developers have
09:15a 22 expected job outlook over the next
09:1810 years which is much faster than
09:20average and that's with 1.8 million jobs
09:22right now in the us technology
09:24occupations in general are growing 13
09:26over the next 10 years which is one of
09:28the fastest out of all different types
09:29of occupations and if you type in
09:31software development at the entry level
09:33on linkedin you're going to see 429
09:37000 results and if you look up the zip
09:39recruiter skills index which basically
09:40tries to value different types of skills
09:42you're going to see software engineering
09:44is number one and software development
09:46related skills are basically all over
09:48the top 20. they're like 15 out of the
09:50top 20 or something like that and on my
09:52personal college degree ranker that i
09:54created computer science is the number
09:55one degree that you can get because
09:57there is so much demand for it at about
09:59154 demand score so yeah ridiculous
10:02amount of demand here probably the most
10:04in demand skill that you can possibly
10:06learn however it is not the easiest
10:08skill to learn there are many careers
10:09out there where you can learn the skills
10:11needed for the career much faster than
10:13software development like you can't just
10:15say i'm a software developer snap your
10:16fingers and you got a job might have
10:18been true 10 years ago but now companies
10:20have gotten wise and they can tell if
10:22you're just bs'ing so you really do have
10:24to know your stuff when it comes to
10:25software development if you want to land
10:27that first entry level job but yeah the
10:29demand is just phenomenal here i mean it
10:31does not get any better than software
10:33development next we're going to be
10:34talking about salary so software
10:36developers make about 110 000 a year
10:39according to bls and technology
10:41occupations in general pay on average 97
10:44000 a year which is the highest by far
10:48out of all different types of
10:49occupations and over a lifetime aka over
10:51the last 40 years computer and math
10:53related occupations pay the second most
10:55behind engineering and i wouldn't be
10:57surprised if over the next 40 years they
10:59surpass engineering and they become
11:01number one now one subreddit that i love
11:03to follow is the fire subreddit that
11:05stands for financial independence retire
11:07early and if you follow this subreddit
11:09for any amount of time you're gonna
11:10notice that most of the people in the
11:12subreddit are in the technology industry
11:15and many of them are software developers
11:17or coders and this speaks volumes
11:18because a lot of the people who are
11:20trying to retire by the time they're 30
11:2135 40 etc are working in tech and a lot
11:25of them are working in software
11:26development so to even think that you
11:28can retire early you have to be making
11:30really really good money so this is an
11:32extremely profitable skill i would say
11:34as an employee this might be the most
11:37profitable skill on average there's some
11:39other ones that are pretty profitable
11:40but they're very incentive based or
11:42they're entrepreneurial so for instance
11:44like sales jobs you can make more money
11:46but it's extremely incentive based so
11:48you have to sell like a million dollars
11:49a year or something if you want to make
11:51you know 200 300 000 so yeah when it
11:53comes to salary software development is
11:55absolutely amazing next we're going to
11:57be talking about the production value of
11:59the course now this is going to be the
12:00hardest one for me to speak on because
12:02the course is brand new but i have taken
12:04tons and tons of courses in my life i've
12:06taken really good ones that were
12:07phenomenal and i've taken ones that were
12:09terrible but this course was actually
12:11taught by meta staff so these are people
12:13who are on the front lines probably got
12:15hired in the last few years and they're
12:17people who likely help with the hiring
12:19and training process of entry level
12:21employees so this isn't like a boot camp
12:23who is made by somebody who got a
12:24software developer job like 10 years ago
12:26it's also not made by a professor who
12:28used to work as a computer scientist
12:30like 20 or 30 years ago and that's
12:32important because these types of skills
12:34rapidly change there are languages that
12:36were really popular five years ago that
12:37are no longer as popular and there's
12:39also languages that didn't even exist
12:41five years ago that are becoming
12:42extremely popular now there's not that
12:43many ratings yet only about 52 but the
12:45back-end professional developer
12:47certificate for instance has a 4.8 star
12:49rating so that's fantastic and if you
12:51look at one of the first modules the
12:52programming with javascript module that
12:54has a five-star rating so perfect and if
12:56you look at one of the courses that came
12:57out earlier that a lot of people have
12:59gone through about 9 900 people have
13:01rated the meta social media marketing
13:03professional certificate at 4.9 stars
13:06overall so it looks like they did a
13:08phenomenal job with that and chances are
13:10they did a really good job with this so
13:11it's going to get that high rating as
13:13time goes on now i'm not going to go
13:14over all the technical skills you can
13:16learn you can check all that stuff out
13:17but i'll briefly just kind of flash it
13:18on the screen so this is the front-end
13:20web developer stuff that you're going to
13:22learn and here's the skills that you're
13:23going to gain i really do like that
13:25they're teaching react that's one that
13:26i've seen help a lot of people get jobs
13:28here's the back-end developer stuff what
13:30you'll learn and the skills that you'll
13:31gain and just overall professional
13:33certificates typically have very good
13:35production value and they're relatively
13:36engaging and educational next i'm going
13:38to be talking about your chances of
13:40landing a job and this is probably the
13:43most important part so i've seen a ton
13:44of courses out there on like udemy or
13:46like private courses unteachable that
13:48teach people skills and that's great
13:50don't get me wrong i think it's awesome
13:51that they teach people skills but they
13:53totally leave out the whole getting a
13:55job thing which is incredibly important
13:57and one of the most important things you
13:59can do in order to get a job is to do
14:01projects and build your portfolio so i
14:04love that meta actually focused on this
14:06so you can see here there's an applied
14:08learning project so they're actually
14:09going to have you complete nine
14:10different projects in the front end
14:12developer course for instance and these
14:14are projects that you can showcase to
14:15prove that you actually have the skills
14:17that you're saying that you have are a
14:19very particular set of skills
14:22skills i have acquired over at a
14:23professional certificate program so by
14:25the end of the program you're basically
14:26going to have an entire portfolio and on
14:28top of helping you build a portfolio
14:30they're also going to help you with the
14:31coding interviews plus and this might be
14:33the most valuable thing of all you're
14:34going to get access to an exclusive job
14:37board not only will it make it more
14:38likely that you get hired at facebook
14:40but there's 200 plus different companies
14:42that have agreed to recognize the meta
14:44certificates and they agreed to source
14:46talent through these certificates so
14:48these certs are actually highly
14:49respected by recruiters hiring managers
14:51and business owners and a lot of the
14:53time people actually search linkedin
14:55using the certs like i mentioned that
14:56guy in the comments section who actually
14:58put on his linkedin that he was in the
14:59process of taking that certification and
15:01recruiters were already starting to
15:03reach out to him he didn't even have to
15:04reach out to them so this gives you many
15:06chances of being discovered as a talent
15:08now these certs are new there's not as
15:10much statistics but the google i t certs
15:12about 42 percent of people said it
15:14helped them make more money 37 of people
15:16said it helped them get a job and 94 of
15:19people said they'd recommend it to a
15:20family member or a friend now you might
15:22think 37 is low but you have to realize
15:25that a lot of people probably just took
15:26the certificate to brush up on their
15:28skills so many people weren't taking
15:29these certificates in order to get a job
15:31they already had one so these are
15:32actually phenomenal numbers especially
15:34for something that costs so little and
15:36doesn't take that much of your time so
15:38in my opinion these certs are definitely
15:40going to help you get a job now let's
15:42talk about the overall value of the
15:44certificate when you're talking about
15:45overall value i like to think of things
15:47in terms of risk and reward so what are
15:50you risking and what is the possible
15:52reward and what are your chances of
15:54getting that reward so in this case
15:55you're risking maximum like 200 in three
15:58to five months of your life the possible
15:59reward for this is learning an in-demand
16:01skill set and getting a job that will
16:03basically mean that you are financially
16:05set for life now when you compare this
16:07to the risk reward of college college
16:09costs around eighty thousand dollars and
16:11it takes five point one years of your
16:13life or the risk reward of boot camps
16:15which cost ten to fifteen thousand
16:16dollars and take somewhere between six
16:18to eighteen months of your life so it's
16:20kind of a no-brainer and i'm not saying
16:21those other options aren't good as well
16:23for certain careers those other options
16:24can be viable and let's be honest
16:26comparing these things it's really an
16:28apples to oranges comparison but the
16:30true value i see for certificates is two
16:32things one it's a very cheap way for you
16:34to figure out if that's a good career
16:36for you and two it's a way of being
16:38discovered it's very easy to find people
16:40who have these brand name certificates
16:41from companies like meta or google and
16:43another great thing about these
16:44certificates is the companies tend to
16:46only make them for career paths that are
16:48in very high demand and the reason for
16:50that is because again like i said they
16:52were frustrated with colleges and they
16:53weren't finding people who had the
16:54skills they wanted so if you take these
16:56entry-level certs and you find that you
16:57enjoy the work congrats you might have
16:59just found yourself a job for life so
17:01the value here overall is incredible now
17:04let's quickly talk about the pros and
17:05cons of the certifications so the pros
17:08here uh affordable fast not much risk
17:11brand recognition value gives you access
17:13to more job opportunities and you can
17:15learn from anywhere the cons here it's
17:17new so it's relatively unknown not a lot
17:19of reports on them certificates aren't
17:21very social they're also not that
17:23interactive so you kind of have to be
17:24somewhat self-directed you know if you
17:26decide not to work nobody is going to
17:28stop you from doing that and you're also
17:29not guaranteed a job but let's be honest
17:32college and boot camps don't guarantee
17:34you a job either so overall is the
17:36certificate worth it or not so when i
17:38reviewed the google certificate program
17:40last year i gave it one thumbs up and
17:42like i said before that's because it was
17:43still relatively new and unknown now
17:45that i have more references and i've
17:46worked with a lot of people who've gone
17:48through these programs i give this two
17:50major thumbs up it is a phenomenal
17:53option for a bunch of people out there i
17:54highly highly recommend them and they're
17:56especially good for somebody who's new
17:58and they want to dip their toe in
17:59different careers and see what's best
18:00for them and you want to be able to do
18:02this without risking all that much
18:03effort time or money if you enjoyed this
