00:00hello everyone my name is Lucy I'm not a
00:03native English speaker for many years I
00:05was confused for a question how to fix I
00:09can understand but I cannot speak
00:11English if you have the same confusion
00:13you are at the right place
00:15let me share my personal experience
00:17I learned English for many years from
00:20middle school to high school and during
00:22college I even passed the English exams
00:24such as TOEFL and else
00:26but when I started my graduate school in
00:29the US I find out very Strangely I can
00:32understand most of the lectures but I
00:35cannot talk with a complete sentence it
00:37has been pretty painful because I just
00:39shy away from very daily topics in the
00:42grocery stores in the restaurants and
00:44Etc even sometimes I need to think twice
00:47how to answer how are you excuse me at
00:49that moment I feel really painful I was
00:52so confused of my English capability so
00:55if you have the situation I'm here with
00:57you let's start with this one passive
01:00and active language skill
01:04as we see a huge number of countries
01:07have English and mandatory subjects in
01:09school but according to my travel
01:12experience and the people I met
01:14counter-intuitively most of the people
01:16in these countries cannot speak English
01:18because I was in the same situation
01:20before I can find that they can
01:22understand me but cannot reply with a
01:24complete sentence so you are not alone
01:27and we need to Twitch this English
01:28speaking a bit to me the speaking of
01:31first let's divide the English study
01:34into two skills active skills and
01:37passive language skills refer to the
01:40ability to comprehend and understand the
01:42language such as listening and reading
01:44in contrast the active skills involves
01:47producing such as writing and speaking
01:50so in school language learning often
01:52focuses on develop positive skills such
01:54as reading listening maybe a little
01:57writing but you know what how this is
01:59the same language but active skills do
02:01not come naturally it requires practice
02:03and repetition in speaking and writing
02:06so here comes my first tip is to
02:09practice more active skill or to say
02:12output steel rather than the passive
02:14skill we can also say the input skill of
02:18course the language input is very
02:19important and congratulations if you
02:22watch this video you have already
02:23figured out most of it it will be pretty
02:26fast to master the language for you be
02:29one of the good ways to find the
02:31environment to start speaking English
02:33but if you don't have this condition and
02:36here are some ways you can practice
02:38along for example writing you can start
02:40by writing short articles write a
02:43journal and also write short social
02:46media content such as Twitter and
02:48Instagram and practice your grammar by
02:50writing some sentences the next thing is
02:53to paraphrase back to my time in China
02:55preparing the TOEFL exam I do self-talk
02:58to describe the things in life and once
03:01I watch a movie I paraphrase them in my
03:04own word in English when I watch some
03:06social media content I try to paraphrase
03:09them in English that really helps us to
03:12use a language and develop our active
03:14skills even if you don't have anyone to
03:16talk with the next thing I feel very
03:19interesting is to make the social media
03:21accountant this have many benefits for
03:23example when you're involved in the
03:25English social media you can get the
03:28most updated information and what's up
03:30to now in the world and another perk is
03:33you record your talking and when you
03:35added the video you listen to the
03:37recording and you can identify the areas
03:39that need to be improved it's pretty
03:42easy for me to open my mouth because I
03:44know I can just cut out the unwanted
03:46clips and mistakes that makes me feel
03:50once you practice with those tips but
03:52still feel slow here is my second tip
03:56I make the title as remove the hurdles
03:58from traditional listening
04:02during my English study I got a lot of
04:06things like fruits grammar and
04:08translation it gave me an impression
04:10that if I want to speak this language I
04:13need to cross other hurdles to start to
04:16speak but this is not necessarily true
04:18as language is not a hard science it's
04:22more than a set of rules but a means of
04:24communication we can see it as the rules
04:27are not super important but of course it
04:30will help we need a set of more
04:32comprehensive skills such as listening
04:34speaking and Etc to master the language
04:36one of the mindset I had is I Rise my
04:40mind just like a child which is like a
04:43small child taking their mother tone we
04:45don't learn about rules grammar and any
04:48translations of course we get the
04:50speaking skill much more natively by
04:53immersing into the environment we focus
04:56on the things we are curious about and
04:58the ideas we want to convey rather than
05:00the language we use also by embracing
05:03the imperfections and mistakes we can
05:05learn from our errors and improve our
05:08English skills so are you ready to talk
05:10with someone in the real life here comes
05:13our next tip to find a group that
05:18let me go back to my experience even
05:20after I living in a English-speaking
05:22country I still shy away from the real
05:25speaking for a few months at the same
05:27time I often self-blame myself why you
05:30are not seizing any opportunities to
05:32practice but you are more like hiding in
05:34a corner and do nothing I feel that
05:37speaking with the native speaker can be
05:39very intimidating because I feel they
05:41can speak so fast but actually when I
05:43think about that later they're a really
05:45kind person how to find the support
05:50one of the easy way I can think about is
05:52to find the tutor especially they don't
05:55speak your native language this is a
05:57good idea to practice regularly and get
05:59your mistakes fixed at the same time you
06:01can feel more confident than speaking in
06:03real life because you know they are
06:05children and also you can try some tutor
06:07that do not speak your native language
06:08this is my experience when talking with
06:12people speak my native language and I
06:14have more tendency to switch back to our
06:17native language when we are correcting
06:19some mistakes so maybe you can try some
06:22tutors that's not speaking the native
06:24language of you the second thing I think
06:27is to join some language class
06:28personally I feel less shy speaking
06:31English with foreigners this is more
06:34like we are at the same stage and we can
06:36understand each other and we are very
06:39likely to have some more similarities
06:41you can feel free to join some language
06:44club and groups which can be online or
06:47offline learn from others at getting to
06:49know how others at the same state of you
06:51and last but not the least you can
06:54definitely speak with some native
06:56remember that people are very kind when
06:59I first move into an english-speed
07:01country I can only speak English very
07:03slowly yeah I never get any criticism
07:06from others instead they usually say
07:09your English is very good and even
07:11people say some mean words I mean not
07:13constructive criticism this is not your
07:16fault just let it go we can also think
07:19about it like this but when you meet
07:21someone speaking of a native language
07:23they are very polite and willing to
07:25communicate I would really love to help
07:27them and the imperfection in their
07:29speaking in their language is very
07:30minimal and remember that practice makes
07:33perfect the more you speak English the
07:36more confident and fluent you will
07:38become how about your journey to speak a
07:40foreign language what are your ideas and
