00:06hello valley viewers and welcome to a
00:09really interesting and actually still a
00:11controversial piece of history during
00:14the falklands or the malvinas conflict
00:18i bring you to the 25th of may so the
00:22end of the battle of san carlos this is
00:25where the main british landings were at
00:27san carlos waters which is about there
00:30and in particular we're looking at the
00:32times between 1800 and 1940 local
00:36and the argentinian attack and
00:39subsequent sinking of the british
00:41atlantic conveyor this is a reenactment
00:44video but i don't just want to fly a
00:46plane and go and shoot some ships i want
00:49to tell the entire story we're going to
00:51spend first about 10 minutes reading and
00:54listening from the royal museum of
00:57greenwich about the atlantic conveyor
01:00and from a sailor who was on board at
01:02the time she was sunk then we're going
01:05to spend 5 or 10 minutes looking through
01:09naval debrief of the incident and then
01:11finally we'll spend 10 minutes or so
01:14flying the mission so first let's learn
01:17from the royal museum of greenwich on
01:202nd april 1982 argentinian forces
01:23invaded the falkland islands efforts to
01:26resolve the conflict diplomatically soon
01:28failed and on 5th april the british
01:31government launched an amphibious task
01:33force in response not all of the ships
01:36that traveled south were part of the
01:37armed forces however a number of
01:39merchant vessels were requisitioned by
01:42the government to transport troops
01:44supplies and equipment one of those was
01:47the 15 000 ton container ship ss
01:50atlantic conveyor the ship was refitted
01:53allowing it to both carry and fly
01:57and helicopters it left plymouth 25th
02:011982. at this point i'll say that all
02:03relevant links to these documents will
02:05be in the video description and before i
02:07forget to credit andy smith for helping
02:09me with the research among those on
02:11board was howard omarod prior to the
02:14falklands howard worked at devonport
02:16naval base where he was responsible for
02:18issuing naval stores to the devonport
02:22base fleet he also had some sea going
02:24experience serving on the royal fleet
02:26auxiliary vessels and traveling
02:28throughout europe to the usa kenya and
02:30the bahamas when he was asked to
02:32volunteer for the naval task force he
02:34readily agreed a decision helped by the
02:37fact that his partner liz a senior
02:39nursing officer had already deployed
02:41aboard the hospital ship ss uganda with
02:44the task force let's hear from howard
02:46the original role was to be a
02:50semi-aircraft carrier taking down
02:52sea harriers grand attack carriers
02:54wessex and chinook helicopters as both
03:01aircraft that were already down there on
03:05battle losses so we were reserved if you
03:07like that was a that was the main role
03:10because you need a big ship for that to
03:12have a big debt then it meant that there
03:14was a lot of spaces below decks
03:16so the decision was was also made well
03:18let's let's make good use of these and
03:20let's fill as with as many stores as we
03:23think we can or we need knee ammunition
03:29uh kerosene um a landing area for for
03:37accommodation stores like many in the
03:39task force howard expected the conflict
03:41to be resolved swiftly by politicians
03:43and assumed that neither he nor the ship
03:46would ever reach the falklands the ship
03:48made a brief stop in sierra leone before
03:50continuing to the ascension island
03:52the true gravity of the situation became
03:55ever clearer particularly following the
03:57sinking of the argentine general
03:59belgrano and the british hms sheffield
04:03atlantic conveyor continued southwards
04:06and soon all of the harriers were
04:08transferred to the royal navy aircraft
04:10carriers invincible and hermes though
04:12the helicopters remained on board on
04:1521st may the british landed around 4 000
04:18troops on the east of falkland island
04:20this was the battle of san carlos the
04:22argentinian forces responded with air
04:24raids against british ships focusing on
04:26the royal navy warships hms ardent and
04:29hms antelope which were lost in the
04:3325th may was argentina's national day
04:36the british forces braced themselves for
04:39further assault this time atlantic
04:42conveyor was hit by two exit missiles
04:45the smoke coming through to us
04:47so we had had previous
04:51the tunnel system air red warning red so
04:55it was a case of go to your emergency
04:59um which in my case just happened to be
05:08my colleague ron told me he'd heard
05:12captain north say well well boys it's
05:1520th for may it's the argentinian
05:17national day we expect something
05:19special to happen today
05:25area warning red go to your mustache
05:29and i think very shortly i'm not even
05:32sure whether the phrase had been
05:35the next instruction was hit the deck
05:39at the same point if not at the same
05:46um and felt a little judd i felt at that
05:50point that it was probably a bomb
05:52but it wasn't long after that
05:54that um we we found smoke seeping
05:58it didn't matter any sense what it was
06:00we were having a problem
06:02i didn't really know what was going on
06:06um the amount of smoke coming through to
06:12was indicated that there was a
06:14significant problem the ship's internal
06:16telephone system was lost in a strike
06:18and the extent of the damage was not
06:20initially clear however eventually
06:22howard ran to the bridge to find
06:24officers pulling on survival suits as
06:27the fire on board grew out of control
06:30the order came to abandon ship so we've
06:32been told to move out onto onto the deck
06:34at but at that point you know the
06:37skeleton had become a little bit clearer
06:39because we could see
06:40i'm not sure what we can see
06:42fire up like we certainly see lots of
06:44smoke pouring out from below
06:46the smoke plus the various bangs and
06:52assumed were as a result of
06:54kerosene oxygen cylinders and all sorts
06:59close to the heat and fire and exploding
07:02um was a little bit disconcerting
07:06so when when the order came to start
07:09getting down off the ship
07:10i don't think many of us would was too
07:13the next stage was was to get down the
07:16ship had no life boats of course so it
07:18was a case of using the
07:24thrown overboard pushed overboard
07:32in in in in a queue in a line we were
07:36told to stop going down and getting into
07:41but of course by then the life loss
07:43begun to to drift away from the ship
07:48a third of the way down
07:50um and such was the pressure of of
07:53getting people off the ship then people
07:55from above were shouting jump jump
07:59i could see i could also hear people
08:01blow saying no don't jump because if the
08:03ship rolls you get sucked under the
08:07so in the event i compromised i went
08:10about halfway down and then jumped
08:12but it was into the water
08:14so i had to swim towards the light raft
08:17i didn't notice temperature at all
08:21i do remember swimming towards the life
08:23raft and the life raft um
08:28be a long way away but as i approached
08:33seemed to pick up the life often
08:36landed right on top of me which pushed
08:41and i i think that was the time when
08:46through my mind very very quickly
08:50because i thought well you know i may
08:56i did there were actually some people in
08:59the life left at that time so when i got
09:00there they were able to help me inside
09:03howard was taken aboard hms alaska which
09:05is gathered alongside scrambling up the
09:08net on the side of the ship to safety
09:10not everyone was so lucky twelve men
09:13lost their lives in the sinking of
09:15atlantic conveyor the sinking also had
09:18repercussions for the broader conflict
09:20valuable equipment including nine
09:22helicopters were lost meaning that
09:24troops had to travel on foot from san
09:27carlos to port stanley which we will be
09:29covering in the following weeks next the
09:31incident report i'll check that i can
09:33share this and if i can i'm sure i will
09:35be able to then i'll also link it in the
09:37video description what we've got here is
09:39the official record of what happened
09:43pieced together via the official reports
09:45from each of the ships involved roughly
09:48scanning by first contact 1936 from
09:51ambush guard the ego of radar detected
09:54targets at three one zero it also shows
09:57what they do when they deployed chaff
09:59and so on 30 seconds later aircraft
10:01detected 28 nautical miles with no
10:03bearing next hms brilliant 30 seconds
10:05later two aircraft detected 26 nautical
10:07miles hermes at the same time two
10:10contacts detected at that bearing exeter
10:12then uses her a-game radar to detect
10:14hostiles at 3-4-0 chaff deployed
10:17ambiscard hermes brilliant ambus god
10:20exeter and finally brilliant with the
10:23missiles seen on video initial tracks
10:25directly towards the ambush guard but
10:27then veered to missiles left apparently
10:30towards the chaff having passed
10:32ambassador missiles impacted starboard
10:34quarter of atlantic conveyor it then
10:37follows a really interesting series of
10:38reports each ship's signals and records
10:42show exactly what they saw and what they
10:45did at each point at the end as is
10:48normal with a naval debrief we have the
10:51plot a summary of all of those records
10:54put together and we can see here that we
10:56have ambassador contact here at that
10:58time interestingly hermes detects the
11:00same target there and that shows fog of
11:03war nothing's perfect ambassador
11:05detected the pair of extra sets here
11:08they came in obviously from the north
11:10west the missiles were targeted
11:12apparently at ambassad here
11:14she let out a chaff pattern as shown
11:16here the missiles then apparently
11:20away from ambassador and went to and
11:23the chaff the scale is here by the way
11:26about two miles to the east the missiles
11:29then impacted atlantic conveyor how they
11:32did that i'm not sure whether they
11:34impacted her by pure bad luck or whether
11:37they tracked a new target after the
11:39decoy we also have tristran here hms
11:42brilliant here and hermes here and so
11:45finally on to our reenactment we're very
11:48lucky in that we have a one-to-one scale
11:49map of the falklands and the south of
11:51argentina here is the naval task force
11:54of consequence on that day set out as
11:57best i can from the documents within a
12:01we have our atlantic conveyor full of
12:04chinooks other helicopters ammunition
12:07and stores ambush guard here tristan
12:10here brilliant there
12:12hermes there in terms of the environment
12:14the clouds are as best i can set up to
12:16the day the wind is the best i can set
12:17up to the day the time of day i have
12:20changed because i need to make a video
12:22and i need you to be able to see what's
12:23going on geography the super attendance
12:26which carried out the attack operated
12:28from rio grande here
12:30they flew 330 nautical miles northwest
12:33of the falklands here where they
12:35intercepted their tanker
12:36they needed to take on fuel to complete
12:39then another 190 miles to the target
12:42missiles were fired at about 22 nautical
12:44miles from the task force they then
12:47returned to the tanker and returned home
12:49the aircraft themselves were of course
12:52french-built super 10 darts they were
12:55armed with just a single exorcism
12:57missile why is that well mainly because
13:00argentina only had a handful of french
13:03xsat anti-ship missiles either eight or
13:05nine i forget which now let's join them
13:07at rio grande i'll see you please taxi
13:11all right here we go
13:24except missiles are massive as you can
13:33super e of course also
13:56okay i'll see when you're ready we'll
13:57take off we'll punch through the clouds
13:59and then we'll set wait for the
14:00falklands sorry the malvinas
14:06here we go okay let's do it
15:02where are the tops of these these are
15:04really big clouds over argentina today
15:08wow they just keep going plenty of ifr
15:26i think we're freaking through here we
15:27go yeah this is getting less
15:45okay valley viewers we're gonna
15:46basically be on this heading at high
15:48altitude because we want to save fuel
15:49and be as efficient as possible
15:51for 360 nautical miles at about 400
15:55knots or so it's gonna be just under an
15:57hour we will report back at our pit stop
16:00welcome back an hour has passed and
16:02we've done well over 300 nautical miles
16:04now tanker would usually operate high up
16:06to be efficient and save fuel but in
16:08this wartime scenario we've actually
16:09agreed him agree to meet him just below
16:11the clouds because we're actually not
16:13that far from the falklands or alvina's
16:15island so i'm gonna try contacting him
16:272 000 meters about 6 000 feet i'll see
16:29he's down below the clouds we know he's
16:31on the nose because that's the
16:31rendezvous point so we've got to punch
16:33our way through the clouds
16:36he's going to be just below the clouds
16:39so we're going down yeah okay
16:43yeah always a worrying thing to do he
16:45should be out 10 miles on the nose ish
16:48point lots of if flying today hopefully
16:51it's not raining anymore anyway don't
16:53believe it was actually raining at this
16:55in this area but you never know because
16:57the weather around here was a bit
16:58temperamental no it is raining
17:01oh there you go oh so where we want six
17:03thousand feet uh 2000 meters yeah
17:07just go below the level just go slightly
17:08below the cloud deck and we'll spot him
17:12yeah here we go we're coming through now
17:15all right keep an eye out for a funking
17:16great argentine tanker it will hopefully
17:19appear at some point yeah the old super
17:25yeah dangerous flying over water is so
17:29thank god for the radar altimeter or
17:32just the altimeter i've actually just
17:33seen something out to our right arm so
17:34you can i'm going to take lead
17:39i saw a flash out to our right
17:41okay all right finding a freaking tanker
17:44in the freaking soup
17:46with minimal fuel what's my feel now let
17:51yep pretty much on fumes
17:57okay i'm on your i'm on your three
17:59o'clock put a flare out it's not sop but
18:08i'm sure i saw him right god damn it
18:10where has he gone okay i had to cheat in
18:12the end i say uh he's on my left now
18:14looks like i put him a little too much
18:16in the clouds so this is going to be an
18:17interesting approach finding a tank of
18:19air-to-air refueling in the cloud
18:23pretty sure they don't do that pretty
18:24sure they don't do that as well
18:26you just follow me and i'll figure on my
18:30yeah and yes i am gonna have to cheat
18:32i found him found him right
18:36i see i i got you what the heck is he
18:38doing well he certainly is camouflaged
18:41he did promise it would be camouflaged
18:43i guess in reality they would probably
18:45have attack hand or something on board
18:47that hook that would allow us to find
18:48him via the attack and but we don't have
18:52well now you're coming at me yep you
18:54just gotta figure that out or i'll see
18:57i'm just gonna worry about the tanker
19:01oh i see him yeah i saw him for a minute
19:04but now he's welcome to that lovely
19:07what's your heading we're on our heading
19:09of two one zero at exactly two thousand
19:12meters in a slight left orbit right i'm
19:15gonna see if we're gonna hook up
19:22i'll go for the rigmarole now trying to
19:25contact with this guy
19:27there are a few i'm on left hose
19:30although it looks like he's got his
19:31right hose out he hasn't
19:34on the server so you'd have to request
19:35it oh look at that i've got a little the
19:37super he's got a little thing that helps
19:38me refuel i've never seen that before
19:40okay good news it's the only plane i've
19:42ever flown with the refueling nozzle
19:43right in my face so this is gonna be the
19:45easiest refueling i think i've ever done
19:49wind is on today 23 knots with
19:51turbulence as it was in the real life so
19:54nothing's easy with 23 knots and 12
20:08refueling real life valley jurors is
20:10really it's pretty easy in dcs generally
20:12in real life it's hideously hard
20:16pcs well um but you know you've flown
20:19real planes and i've played a few real
20:20planes now and the micro the micro bits
20:24of turbulence just in even normal air
20:26normal air that buffet you around
20:29you just don't really get that in dcs
20:33i think that uh i think it's more
20:36forgiving in real life
20:39really actually yeah
20:41justification i don't think dcs can
20:43handle all the variables when it comes
20:46to so i mean so i think it's harder in
20:48real life i don't think it's easy
20:50but i don't think it's
20:53uh i wasn't concerned and the reason is
20:57because you have uh feedback yes you do
21:00you do have the feedback dcs you do kind
21:02of have turbulence model value viewers
21:05it's not as complex as in real life so
21:06in turbulence real turbulence it's kind
21:09of well kind of randomized by nature
21:12so my plane will will be affected and i
21:14don't mean turbulence off another plane
21:15i mean general turbulence
21:18so my turbulence that i experience will
21:20be slightly different to the pain on my
21:21right and the plane on the left whereas
21:23dcs it seems to be uniform everyone
21:25experiences the same turbulence you know
21:28everyone moves in unison
21:31what i've experienced in real life and
21:32i've flown i'm not flown by i've been in
21:34a plane in wing tip formation now which
21:37i'm lucky enough to say it's a light
21:38aircraft so it did get bounced about but
21:40we were experiencing different things
21:44taking fuel from this tank is hard rc
21:47yeah it really is it keeps he keeps
21:50breaking i know how to refuel when this
21:51guy keeps breaking anyway let me know
21:52you thought of viewers a lot of you guys
21:54have got much more experience than real
21:55flying me and rc so i'm really enjoying
21:57my real flying at the moment so it makes
21:59me hideously sick but
22:01that is uh what happens when you're
22:02chemotherapy unfortunately
22:04right come here son of a gun you can
22:06hook up but it bounces on off the hose
22:08it's a bit of a swine
22:10out of you so we may be here a while
22:12because i've got lots of fuel to take on
22:15okay number 2000 kilos
22:18i'm almost done actually the plane only
22:24it's two and a half thousand kilos yeah
22:26what you find is this nozzle was a funny
22:28shape or whatever it just bounced out
22:29the bucket bounces out the bucket
22:32but ugly it's not modeled quite right i
22:35probably go with that
22:38i'm kind of taking a key a liter of fuel
22:40at a time fill me up
22:44do you have your afterburner on i know
22:48i assume the super he doesn't really
22:49have that little thing i'm done
22:55jim i'm not 100 sure he didn't say
22:56anything which usually means he's done
22:57but i'm a fan of the super e by the way
22:59i love french players friends planes are
23:02super eas right up my alley in terms of
23:05and the local ladies happy when the f1
23:08comes out about that i'll be right up my
23:10never still get to a jaguar
23:13which is also french actually i'm
23:16how close did you need to be pretty
23:32that was hard refueling actually as it
23:35now it's time for monster rc you don't
23:36worry about me i'll worry about me
23:39as i cut right in front of you do you
23:41know what shows you're on now i'll see
23:42because he has them both out for me but
23:43only want to be activated i don't have i
23:45don't see any of them out huh look at me
23:47leaving you alone to concentrate it is
23:49interesting on the uh
23:52you know right ahead of you
23:56you should have to worry about friggin
23:58offset now you know you compare that
24:01just ignore him i just don't need to
24:04you'll see it just pops you out every
24:05now and then because he gets bored
24:07we've been in longer than i have
24:13i guess i did have you yapping in my ear
24:21now you're just showing off
24:28and i am not a good reviewer obviously
24:30he's not going to fuel her apparently
24:36the one thing i can say about the jeff
24:39because i like that it has the fuel on
24:41the hood oh isn't that good
24:44there are some really good features it's
24:46actually really once you get used to
24:47this idiosyncrasies which has a few it's
24:50actually bloody user friendly and bloody
24:54again what is the green light flash in
24:56real life is it any good i don't know
24:58but in dcs uh well how much fuel you've
25:01gotten if you know he'll tell you when
25:04yeah i would have thought you'd be cool
25:05by now i was only on the house right
25:07just feeling green light flashing on the
25:10it just means good it means you're at
25:11the right distance probably by fluke now
25:14all right you're just showing off
25:16that valley viewers is showing off don't
25:19listen to him all right just gets his
25:21big head well i'll see please set course
25:23four one one zero to the task force that
25:27where our spies are telling us
25:29the task force is we're going to go low
25:30at this time because um we don't we you
25:33know we're in attack formation here
25:34um we're going to get picked up we'll go
25:36mill power because we want to minimize
25:38our ingress time obviously
25:40uh try not to crash into the sea i guess
25:43one one zero yeah why does the uh super
25:47e have that little light behind valley
25:48views does the real engine have that i
25:54for reasons i think the rain will clear
25:57up as well on a nice clean shot on this
26:01this tile source with my air-to-ground
26:02radar does the supreme have an
26:05afterburner and we're live yeah it
26:09all right i'm low at 700. all right 32
26:12minutes that's what you are uh we've got
26:14200 miles to go so i will report back
26:17welcome back we're about 170 miles
26:21according to our information the
26:23atlantic task force is pretty much on
26:25our nose by about i don't know 40-ish
26:28the falklands island or malvinas is
26:30actually there but we are too far north
26:32actually see it we want to keep the
26:35accurate to real life we're going to
26:36turn our radar on we need to do that to
26:38find the task force to send the missile
26:41out to them so i'm going
26:44edge ground radar on
26:46we are now searching
26:47for the hostile vessels
26:57due to earth's curvature and whatnot we
26:59can't fire these from you know hundreds
27:00of miles out or even them oh hello
27:04signal don't know what it is
27:06multiple targets right
27:10we should go for middle target i don't
27:12know why and i don't really know which
27:14ships are out there but my instinct
27:16tells me middle target
27:17i've got a ways to go yeah
27:20so we'll just keep that in mind okay uh
27:23do a launch depreciation override but
27:24we're too far to fire at the moment
27:26let's get further more like they fired
27:29about 22 nautical miles i think it was
27:3770 kilometers around 40 miles we're too
27:39far out really missiles can go that far
27:43i've uh i'd like to get much closer in
27:45real life the visibility was actually
27:47five nautical miles uh i've increased
27:49visibility massively again it just makes
27:51a better video for you guys so you can
27:5950 kilometers 30 miles give it five more
28:01miles and then we'll
28:03stick it to those british
28:04stay away from our malfinas
28:16okay i'll see we've reached 40
28:17kilometers about 25 miles you're
28:19permission to fire i'll follow your fire
28:39290 please oh they're spiking us well
28:42they just started spiking us all right
28:43let's get the heck out of here before we
28:49i'm gonna get my autopilot on i'm gonna
28:51try and follow those misses yet they're
28:52after us i'm gonna send their sea
28:53harriers after us very shortly leave us
29:05the missiles have been spoofed by the
29:12they slam into the starboard quarter all
29:17atlantic conveyor chinooks on board are
29:21now she actually survives another three
29:24days and she actually sinks being towed
29:26back to the port but
29:30poor old atlantic conveyor
29:43don't you do not oh i'll say we're going
29:44to go back to safety
29:47all right get out get out see darts c
30:03i didn't know they actually modeled with
30:07yeah that was just me kind of gabbing i
30:08didn't know they're actually modeled wow
30:18hey valley viewers so our reenactment
30:20went a bit differently uh obviously
30:22decided to go and check the bd8 but he
30:23got shot down by a sea dart plane why
30:26and your blades are flying i made it
30:27backward i'm making it back on autopilot
30:30let's see where it goes we might as well
30:32follow this to the bitter end as we're
30:35going to take you back to argentina
30:36super e want to live
30:42oh it sunk the the uh the actual thing
30:49it seems like it's going to go down
31:00okay valid viewers a few historical
31:02inaccuracies as usual but good fun and i
31:05still hope you enjoyed it and learn a
31:06bit anything from rc
