00:00this is the Canon R8 and this is the
00:02Canon R6 Mark II if you click this video
00:04it's probably because you're interested
00:05in one or both of these cameras but
00:08specifically the differences between
00:10them on paper both of these cameras
00:11sound very similar so should you spend
00:14the 6 7 $800 more to upgrade from the R8
00:18to the R6 Mark II or are they
00:21effectively the same camera last week I
00:23brought the R8 and the r62 with me to
00:26shoot an air show which might seem
00:28counterintuitive given that I probably
00:29could have shot on the R5 or gotten
00:32something like the Canon R7 which is a
00:34crop sensor and would have given me a
00:36little bit more telephoto reach but the
00:38R8 is currently on loan to me from Canon
00:41and so I've been wanting to shoot on it
00:42more and specifically compare it to the
00:45r62 which is a camera that I personally
00:48purchased and have owned since the day
00:50it was released at first glance both of
00:52these cameras are very similar the specs
00:54sound the same Canon actually advertises
00:56that the R8 uses the same sensor and
00:59internal processor as the R6 Mark II and
01:02you might look at both of these cameras
01:03and go well really the only difference
01:06is the size but actually it's not that
01:08straightforward there are quite a few
01:10features that are in the r62 that didn't
01:13make their way into the R8 but before we
01:16get into that let's talk about the one
01:17thing these cameras do have in common
01:19which is the sensor so Canon advertises
01:22the R8 as the same 24 megap sensor so
01:256,000 by 4,000 megapixels if you're
01:28shooting photos and this is good news if
01:30you're someone who only cares about
01:32resolution and dynamic range the r62 and
01:35the R8 have the same in fact if you go
01:38online and you look out shudder readout
01:40speeds you'll find that both of these
01:42sensors read out at the same speed which
01:44is a good indicator that Canon is in
01:46fact telling the truth that the sensor
01:48in both of these cameras is in fact the
01:50same and a kind of fun fact is that both
01:52of these cameras actually have a faster
01:54sensor readout than the higher-end Canon
01:57R5 now of course that camera is a little
01:59bit older at this point and does have
02:02more resolution more megapixels so it's
02:03kind of a unfair comparison but the big
02:06thing is that the R8 has no Ibis or no
02:10inbody image stabilization that means
02:13unlike the r62 which has Ibis the sensor
02:16inside the R8 is fixed it doesn't move
02:19there are actually two big advantages to
02:21that the first is that there's less
02:24internal requirements that there just
02:26there's not as much space for all of
02:28those Ibis components and so when you
02:30put these cameras side by side you'll
02:32actually notice that the R8 is not only
02:34a lot thinner but when you compare the
02:36other dimensions it's a lot smaller I'm
02:38I'm not recommending you do this but you
02:40can actually fit the R8 in into your
02:43pocket it's kind of dumb but you can do
02:46it the other Advantage is that because
02:48there is no Ibis you don't get those
02:50crazy Corner Jello-O Ibis wobbles which
02:54if you've seen any of my Vlog Style
02:56videos where I'm holding my lens out
02:58like this and shooting at 15 16 mm you
03:01know that the corners tend to get a
03:02little bit crazy so while I found that
03:04the footage from the R8 doesn't have
03:07that for wide angle when you switch to
03:09telephoto that's when you start to
03:11notice the lack of Ibis and that's where
03:14it becomes a disadvantage the other
03:16disadvantage is that the R8 doesn't have
03:19a full mechanical shutter it has a
03:21shutter we'll talk about that in a bit
03:23but the one thing you can't do with this
03:25camera is have the shutter down when the
03:28camera Powers off so if you grab an R
03:30six you can see that on there's the
03:33sensor but if I turn it off the shutter
03:37goes down when the R8 is off the sensor
03:40is just always exposed there is no
03:43shutter there is no cover there is
03:45nothing that comes down to cover the
03:47sensor so at a high level Bird's ey view
03:49summary of the R8 the R8 is a good if
03:54not great option for the price comparing
03:56everything else out there that's full
03:58frame they're basically are no other
04:01options if you're looking for an
04:02entrylevel full-frame camera this is
04:04what you want to go with I don't think
04:05it replaces the r62 for some of the
04:08reasons that we'll talk about in a bit
04:10but if you're someone who doesn't have
04:11the money for an r62 it's a good option
04:14or if you're someone who has an r62 and
04:17is looking for a backup camera body mind
04:20you with slightly fewer features the R8
04:23is going to be a great option the only
04:24other camera that I would consider
04:26comparing it to is this guy the Lumix S9
04:31which I think I'm going to do a separate
04:33video on talking about the S9 in
04:35comparison to the R8 but it is a more
04:39expensive camera it does have inbody
04:42image stabilization it does have bigger
04:45batteries that last longer than the R8
04:48so we'll talk about that in a future
04:50video and the S9 is arguably a better
04:53camera for video if you only record in
04:56small batches but jumping back to the
04:57r62 and the R8 last year when I was
05:00speaking for Canon at profusion I had a
05:02lady come up to me and she was ready to
05:05buy a camera and the question she asked
05:06me was R8 or R six Mark I I told her
05:11well do you have the budget for the r62
05:13and she told me yes and I said well go
05:16with the r62 and her reply back was oh
05:19but I like the smaller size and the
05:21smaller form factor of the R8 which
05:23again for some people is going to be an
05:25advantage if you're someone who travels
05:27with your camera and needs something
05:28smaller one of the things that I found
05:30is that the R8 does fit into spaces that
05:34r62 normally wouldn't like instead of
05:37bringing an extra lens and putting that
05:39into my camera bag I can pretty much fit
05:41this in the same space that I would pack
05:43something like uh like a small prime
05:45lens but the reason that I told her R
05:48six Mark II is because the way the body
05:50is designed the R8 lacks a few key
05:53functions that I really like in the R6
05:55Mark II that are present in Canon's
05:57higher-end mirrorless cameras one is the
05:59rotary dial that you get on the back and
06:02the little nubbin the the the joystick
06:04that you can kind of use to navigate the
06:06menus or change your autofocus points on
06:09the R8 while there is the four-way d-pad
06:13it's not as versatile as having both the
06:16joystick and the rotary dial also
06:18there's no rate button sounds stupid I
06:20know but a lot of the time I'm going
06:22through reviewing photos in the moment
06:24hitting rate so that when I open them
06:25later in Lightroom my photos are already
06:28somewhat pre sorted and if you take a
06:30look at the top dial you'll notice that
06:32there's also one less custom mode it
06:34might be hard to tell at first but the
06:36R8 does have a slightly smaller screen
06:39and electronic viewfinder so if you're
06:40looking for something that's a little
06:42bit more robust something that's maybe
06:44going to give you a better picture when
06:45you're out shooting in the middle of the
06:47day or something that's just a little
06:48bit bigger so you can see it easier the
06:50r62 does have that advantage to me
06:53personally the r62 is just more
06:55comfortable in my hands like ideally I
06:57want something that I can fit all of my
07:00fingers on it's something that I really
07:01only get with Canon cameras like even
07:04comparing to Sony cameras or or other
07:05cameras I always find that my my pinky
07:08like you can see with the R8 it's a
07:09little bit shorter it just it just wants
07:11a place to live and I don't get that all
07:14the time or I kind of have to like
07:16scrunch my hand up to get my whole hand
07:18on the grip I mentioned that the R8
07:20doesn't have a full mechanical shutter
07:23so if you go into the menu you'll find
07:24that mechanical shutter isn't there as
07:26an option what you get instead is
07:28electronic first curtain so mechanical
07:31shutters have a first curtain and a
07:33second curtain or a top curtain and a
07:34bottom curtain and when you actuate it
07:36depending on your shutter speed the
07:38distance between those two curtains
07:40opens and closes with the r62 the R5 and
07:43the higher end cameras you get both of
07:45those curtains but with the R8 you only
07:48get it closing with the curtain so the
07:50first curtain instead of being present
07:52is electronic so the sensor opens
07:55electronically and closes mechanically
07:58that means the R8 is slightly more
08:00susceptible to Flicker and while the
08:03camera does have an anti flicker mode it
08:05doesn't work in every scenario but there
08:08is one advantage to electronic first
08:10curtain which is the camera will vibrate
08:13less it means that there's nothing
08:15inside the camera that shakes prior to
08:18the exposure occurrence it's a little
08:19bit of a confusing concept to explain
08:22but it basically means in some very rare
08:25shooting instances the image quality
08:28with electronic first curtain will turn
08:29out better than mechanical now one of
08:32the disadvantages with electronic first
08:34curtain is that it can mess up the bokeh
08:37inside your images so the background
08:38those blurry orbs that you get in some
08:41very rare instances you might notice a
08:44loss in quality I personally didn't
08:47notice it but something I did notice you
08:49can see in these two images so this is
08:52an ISO test a high ISO test the R8 is on
08:56the left the r62 is on the right and if
08:59we Zoom zoom in we take a look it is
09:01really hard to notice a difference the
09:03iso performance at 2 25 25,000 600 looks
09:08the same it's what we'd expect since
09:10both of these sensors are identical
09:12there is going to be some differences in
09:14the composition of this image because
09:17the sensors aren't exactly in the same
09:19place when I put them on the tripod but
09:21you might notice in the background
09:23there's this pattern to the noise
09:25there's these horizontal lines so it
09:27might be hard to see on YouTube maybe
09:29pause the video and see if you can
09:31notice it and that's because we were
09:33shooting an electronic first curtain
09:35with an LED panel which naturally causes
09:38some flicker now I was using the
09:40anti-flicker detection the same settings
09:43on both of these cameras but if I grab
09:46the one on the right which is our r62
09:49and I switch it to the mechanical
09:51shutter I don't know if you noticed but
09:54the lines went away so in mechanical
09:56shutter you don't get that flickering or
09:59you won't get as much flickering in some
10:01instances with certain LED panels you
10:03still will get flickering but in this
10:05case the mechanical shutter does a much
10:09better job at mitigating that that lines
10:12those like that I don't it's not really
10:14moay if you want to call it Moray but
10:16it's basically the line flicker caused
10:18by LED lighting also fun fact I don't
10:20know if you noticed but I shot those
10:22photos on the new 35 mm
10:27f1.4 which I have right here so stay
10:30tuned for uh a video maybe some photos
10:33maybe something from the 3514 I don't
10:36know what yet but it will be coming but
10:38perhaps the biggest limitation with the
10:40R8 is the fact that it uses Canon's
10:43smaller LP LP 17 batteries they do not
10:48have as many milliamps meaning they
10:50don't have as much juice as the larger
10:52batteries and because I only got one
10:55sent to me with this camera to test I I
10:58was con stantly having to oh boy I put
11:00this in wrong wrong way because I only
11:03had one sent to me with the camera I
11:05found myself constantly having to
11:07recharge the camera which you can do
11:09through USBC but if you're going to get
11:11this camera just do me a favor get more
11:13batteries because it it it eats a lot of
11:16juice orange juice apple juice Booster
11:19Juice also a disadvantage the camera
11:21only has a single card slot so with the
11:23r62 you flick open the side there are
11:25two SD cards with this guy the card slot
11:28is shared with the battery so it's right
11:31in the bottom and you only get one so if
11:33you're someone where redundant shooting
11:35is important or you're shooting
11:37something super critical like weddings
11:39or you're if you're getting paid to do
11:41your photography it might be
11:44advantageous very advantageous to get
11:47something like the r62 for a little bit
11:49over $11,000 the Canon R8 offers
11:52incredible value when you compare it to
11:54its much more expensive $2 2000ish doll
11:57bigger brother the Canon RC 62 I know
12:00for myself if I was to go back 10 years
12:02with my little Rebel t1i and been given
12:05the choice to upgrade to something like
12:08a 7D or the 70D at the time which is
12:11what I was looking at or an entrylevel
12:14fullframe camera for the exact same
12:16price I 100% would have gone with the
12:20full-frame camera and that's the main
12:21reason why the Canon R8 is so popular
12:23for a lot of photographers it's going to
12:25be the choice between this guy or
12:28something like the Canon r 7 which is
12:30apsc it's a bigger Fuller size body but
12:34it doesn't have that fullframe juice the
12:37oomph maybe even just the clout of
12:39owning a full-frame camera I'll be the
12:41first to say that the R8 is easily the
12:44best value full-frame camera currently
12:46on the market I don't think any other of
12:48the camera brands Come Close over the
12:50month that I shot with the R8 I found
12:52myself grabbing it just as often as I
12:54was grabbing the r62 and not really
12:57worrying about it there was no fear
12:59inside me that somehow I was losing out
13:01on image quality or that there would be
13:05something I wouldn't be able to shoot a
13:06type of photography I wouldn't be able
13:08to shoot on the R8 that I would if I had
13:11the R6 Mark I but more than likely if
13:13you've watched this far in the video
13:14you've probably already made up your
13:16mind which one is for you or maybe you
13:18already own one or both of these cameras
