00:32reminisce about there's a fresh
00:35generation of iPad kids who don't get to
00:37experience the yearly tradition of
00:39coming together as a community and
00:41watching the newest YouTube Rewind and
00:44absolutely hating it in case you all
00:47forgot the website youtube.com used to
00:50make these celebratory videos showcasing
00:53all the important events and memes that
00:55had happened throughout the year and all
00:57these YouTubers would get together and
00:59do a silly little dance and everyone had
01:02a grand old time and since these videos
01:05were produced by the very platform
01:07you're currently watching this on
01:09rewinds would always receive a lot of
01:12attention now according to my memory
01:14YouTube rewinds were pretty well
01:16received at first but you see as time
01:19went on the general public and the
01:21YouTubers involved started to grow weary
01:25people were throwing around words like
01:27cringe and this isn't what YouTube
01:30represents and that's that Ah that's
01:33that and it all accumulated to YouTube's
01:36magnum opus YouTube Rewind 2018 everyone
01:41controls rewind # YouTube Rewind which
01:45is a video that was so universally hated
01:49that it holds the world record for most
01:52disliked video ever a record it will now
01:55hold perpetually because of the whole
01:57dislike thing the audience wasn't happy
02:00the YouTubers involved weren't happy
02:02until finally YouTube snapped and was
02:04like all right fine if no one wants it
02:07we'll stop doing it we were just doing
02:08this as a favor anyways and so YouTube
02:11discontinued the rewind project
02:14indefinitely with 2018 being the last
02:17time we ever got a rewind what what what
02:20about me James how dare you even
02:24consider yourself worthy of being called
02:26a rewind 2019 a top 10 video really at
02:31least 2011 had Rebecca Black hosting
02:352019 before I tell you the top 10 ways
02:38on how I'm going to hurt you so getting
02:40back to the actual last YouTube Rewind
02:43you know the one with the most dislikes
02:45in the whole world if we skip to 3
02:47minutes and 2 seconds into that video we
02:50see guys let's do the in my feelings
02:54jeez that's me I know I'm a little late
02:57to the party but since we've all had
02:59enough time to grow and reflect as
03:02people I would like to finally share
03:04some of my thoughts and experiences
03:06working on YouTube Rewind 2018 the first
03:10thing I want to talk about is how none
03:11of the YouTubers involved got any type
03:14of monetary compensation at least none
03:16of the ones I talked to did this was a
03:18big issue that a lot of other YouTubers
03:20had in their expose videos but I
03:23personally was not bothered by it was I
03:28exposure yes in fact I actually lost
03:31money doing this because I had to get my
03:33friend rush to animate some of the
03:34scenes so I you know paid him for his
03:37work but what I'm trying to tell you is
03:40that as much as I'm about to complain
03:41about YouTube Rewind don't feel any sort
03:44of empathy for me okay I I did this to
03:46myself I think the best piece of advice
03:49I could give you is that if YouTube ever
03:51reaches out to you and is like hey do
03:53you want to be a part of rewind you
03:54should say let me read the script first
03:57but I didn't know that in 2018 and I
04:00also didn't know that in 2017 if you
04:02look at YouTube Rewind 2017 and watch
04:04all the way to the end keep going right
04:09there right there in the credits is me
04:11and Jaden doing a floss in space it was
04:15a lot cooler back then they also wanted
04:17all the animators to animate our
04:19characters in the middle of a jello
04:21fight and I think they wanted to put our
04:23cartoon characters over footage of real
04:26life YouTubers in the middle of a jello
04:27fight but they gave us no dire ction and
04:30I don't think they ever filmed a scene
04:32where they were like okay real life
04:34YouTubers remember to leave that spot
04:36empty because that's where the animated
04:38gu is going to go cuz you know they got
04:40to plan that kind of stuff out ahead of
04:41time right so instead they just threw
04:43our unusable animated jello fight with
04:46no background at the very end as this
04:49extremely out ofpl post credit scene so
04:522017 was pretty uneventful for me like
04:55yeah I was in YouTube Rewind but you
04:57know I was in the credits who's going to
04:58stick around and watch the credits you
05:00know but 2018 was going to be my year
05:04rewind wanted me back and this time they
05:06were giving me a speaking roll holy sh
05:11my line was going to be guys let's do
05:15the in my feelings Challenge and then
05:18the YouTuber Swoozie who would be in his
05:20real life human form would say right and
05:23then we'd fist bump Who Framed Roger
05:25Rabbit style so do you remember that
05:27Trend in 2018 where people were doing
05:30that dance outside of their moving car
05:32well apparently that was called the in
05:34my feelings challenge back in 2018 I
05:37didn't even know it was called that I
05:39thought it was called stupid now if
05:42you've at all watched YouTube Rewind
05:432018 everyone controls rewind # YouTube
05:46Rewind you might be wondering why after
05:49I specifically suggest we do the in my
05:52feelings challenge that not a single
05:54YouTuber or talk show host can be seen
05:57dancing outside of a moving vehicle
05:59that's because YouTube didn't want to
06:01promote unsafe Behavior so they didn't
06:04want to show anyone dancing outside of a
06:07car so they weren't really doing the
06:10challenge then were they YouTube if you
06:13don't want to promote unsafe Behavior
06:15don't promote the in my fing feelings
06:18challenge kids are still going to look
06:20up the in my feelings Challenge and then
06:22watch multiple videos of people dancing
06:24outside of cars on YouTube we don't want
06:27to promote unsafe Behavior it's all on
06:29your platform dog you know looking back
06:32that should have been my first red flag
06:34but I was still optimistic I was so
06:37excited to be a part of this huge
06:39project and I knew there were going to
06:41be a bunch of YouTubers involved but I
06:43was going to be one of the few animated
06:45ones I was going to stand out I was
06:48going to be the odd one out knowing how
06:50rewind handled animation in 2017 when
06:53they asked me to be a part of 2018 I
06:55told them hey love the line but I think
06:58it' be a good idea we met in person you
07:00know and that way you can show me
07:02everything you're planning and I can ask
07:03you all the right questions and they
07:05agreed and invited me to visit the set
07:07the day they were filming swoozie's line
07:09so I was there physically behind the
07:11camera when Swoozie said right and then
07:14fist bumped nothing I got to experience
07:16what it was like to be on a real film
07:18set with actors and directors and
07:20costumes and catering and makeup and it
07:23was a lot honestly for just one line and
07:25maybe it was because they had booked
07:27Swoozie for a full hour but they had
07:29this beautiful man say right and then
07:31fist bump nothing no less than 50 times
07:35it's one line guys I think we got it and
07:38then after like take 87 my stomach sank
07:41when the director said okay Swoozie how
07:43about you try saying guys let's do the
07:47challenge wait a minute that's my line
07:51are we changing it which line am I
07:54animating now do you want me to do both
07:56just like how you got Swoozie to do both
07:58and what oh you'll pi your favorites I
08:00asked the director right there which
08:02line was I animating and he said he was
08:04going to let me know and then we went
08:07outside and film Swoozie dance in front
08:09of a brick wall and which parts of him
08:11dancing was I going to animate my guy
08:13next to he said he was going to let me
08:16know that too so I took all the
08:18information I learned that day and
08:19referred it back to the other animators
08:21what they wanted were two shots they
08:23wanted 5 Seconds of our characters
08:25dancing and they wanted another shot of
08:27all of us sitting around a campfire
08:29singing horribly after doing some quick
08:31math I realized that if all seven of us
08:33animators did A 5-second Dance that
08:36would be 35 seconds of cartoons dancing
08:40which for a YouTube Rewind would be a
08:42lot of screen time I had a sinking
08:44feeling that they weren't going to be
08:46using our full 5-second clips and they
08:49didn't even let me know now for my
08:51lifechanging speaking role I had record
08:53my line on my own which normally
08:56wouldn't be a problem but in late 2018 I
08:59had just moved to California and I
09:02didn't have my own setup set up and to
09:04make the whole situation worse I was
09:07only given one week to finish my
09:09animation and record my line so you know
09:12the Clock Was ticking now I think the
09:14second best piece of advice I could give
09:16you is that if you're ever in need of a
09:18quick Jerry rigged sound booth go into
09:21your closet and hide under a comforter
09:23in fact hello real life human James here
09:26coming to you on a Blue Yeti inside of a
09:28bathroom the Acoustics in here are
09:30terrible could you imagine voicing a
09:32cartoon character in this guys let's do
09:36the in my feelings challenge see it
09:38doesn't work now all right and now we're
09:40here inside of our makeshift sound booth
09:43and you can hopefully hear the quality
09:45change right away you know like guys
09:47let's do the in my feelings challenge
09:50see you know we we don't need expensive
09:51sound booths to have a good time but
09:54back in 2018 I wanted the most important
09:57line in my career to be recorded in a
09:59professional sound booth luckily I was
10:02in luck you see California is one of the
10:05few places home to something called a
10:07YouTube space a YouTube space advertises
10:10itself as a place to Aid content
10:12creators providing them with facilities
10:14to create content for their YouTube
10:16channels and to access said facilities
10:19you needed at least 10,000 subscribers a
10:22little weird they put a number on it but
10:23I get it I had just moved to California
10:26I knew I was going to be hitting this
10:27place up all the time when when I first
10:29went to the YouTube space I didn't call
10:32ahead or set up an appointment or
10:33anything because there wasn't an option
10:35to do so on the website but I figured
10:38they would have to help me out right the
10:41line I needed to record was for a
10:43YouTube Rewind and you're a YouTube
10:47space like Susan personally asked me to
10:50be here you know so I drove an hour to
10:54the space I went inside showed them my
10:56sub count and they said that in order to
10:58use facilities I had to fill out all
11:01these forms on my computer back home but
11:05it's for you to rewind then I drove
11:08another hour back home and started
11:10filling out the forms but by the time I
11:12got to the quizzes I realized huh I
11:15think this wild goose chase is probably
11:17going to take longer than a week to
11:18resolve with time running out I gingerly
11:21asked my new friend Aaron if I could use
11:23his setup and he said yes and I didn't
11:26even have to show him my sub count I
11:27mean I showed him anyway though so the
11:29line you hear me say in the 2018 rewind
11:32was recorded in the game grumps office
11:35which I think means at the very least
11:38Game Grumps deserves to be credited in
11:40the description of rewind come on
11:42YouTube they were the only ones who took
11:44me in when your own company turned me
11:45away the deadline was fast approaching I
11:48mean it was fast approaching as soon as
11:50I got it but I've been in crunch mode
11:52before and I'm sure the nameless video
11:55editors were just trying to hit their
11:57impossibly tight deadlines too I
11:59reminded myself what I was making all of
12:01these sacrifices for everyone was going
12:04to unanimously love this video and what
12:07it represents and look up my channel
12:09afterwards and subscribe December 6th
12:132018 a day that changed history it was
12:16raining that day and the world was
12:19exposed to what YouTube had been cooking
12:24collectively hated it like a lot like
12:29like to the point where I would be lucky
12:31if I didn't lose subscribers I think the
12:34audience knew that none of the YouTubers
12:36involved had any say in the creative
12:38process we were just reading our lines
12:40from YouTube script you know so at least
12:42I get to say I'm in the most disliked
12:45video in history and no one's too mad at
12:47me right so was all of this stress worth
12:54it now I got paid in exposure and the
12:58exposure was overwhelmingly negative in
13:00fact I think rewind was only positive
13:06YouTuber do you have any guesses Jaden
13:10mothering animations pulled off the
13:13biggest prank of 2018 one of the reasons
13:16people disliked 2018s rewind was because
13:19PewDiePie the number one YouTuber at the
13:21time wasn't included but Jaden being the
13:24genius that she is knew he wasn't going
13:27to be included again so she snuck in a
13:29PewDiePie reference into her 5-second
13:32dance and no one caught it and it made
13:34the Final Cut Jaden was crowned the
13:38least cringy part of rewind and everyone
13:40loved her and she got a big boost in
13:42subscribers and all I got to say to that
13:48Jaden how are you enjoying that cake and
13:50eating it too now there were a lot of
13:52valid reasons why people disliked 2018s
13:55rewind one of them being that the video
13:57starts out with Will Smith he's not a
14:01YouTuber but they didn't seem to mind
14:03when 2016 started out with The Rock and
14:052017 started with the kar show but
14:08whatever and I don't know if you
14:10remember what YouTube was like in 2018
14:13but uh it was in the news a couple of
14:15times you know you know over a few small
14:17things however with all of that being
14:20said I do genuinely Miss YouTube rewinds
14:23getting to wake up and go wow it's
14:25December and a new YouTube Rewind just
14:27dropped I'm going to watch it and then I
14:29get to see a handful of YouTubers I
14:31recognize do a dance and not recognize
14:33any of the other YouTubers and then I
14:35get to see the rest of the internet's
14:37reaction to it it's better than
14:39Christmas for me even if it's the
14:41cringiest video ever we still all
14:44watched it together as a community and I
14:48think that's what I missed the most when
14:50YouTube felt more like a community as
14:52long as it's not a top 10 video I
14:55welcome back YouTube rewinds with open
14:58arms and and if they do make a comeback
15:00I don't think I'd want to be a part of
15:01them not because I got burned in 2018
15:04but because I wouldn't want to Rob
15:06another ignorant YouTuber of the once in
15:09a-lifetime opportunity to be taken
15:11advantage of and work for free and be a
15:15part of history for now we just have to
15:17live with the nine rewinds we do have
15:20but if you're like me and are just dying
