00:03our top five non-luxury subcompact SUV
00:07list and the thing is we have something
00:10interesting coming up Andrew and I
00:11couldn't decide on number five no now we
00:14do it all in alphabetical order but we
00:17couldn't decide on one of on one all
00:20right so we each had to go our own way
00:22so that's coming that'll be that'll be
00:24towards the end so see what Andrea likes
00:26and what I like and the reasons for that
00:28and we also have what after our top five
00:30we do some honorable mentions some that
00:33didn't make the top five list but still
00:35worth mentioning okay so we don't go 5 4
00:383 2 1 we list our top five and the
00:41attributes and negatives of each because
00:44what might be right for one family is
00:46not right for another so that's how we
00:47do it so let's get into it up first in
00:50alphabetical order is the Honda HRV it
00:53has one powertrain option so if this was
00:55a year ago we were really heavy on Honda
00:59for the pricing they had made for the
01:01HRV and a lot of their other vehicles
01:03they put the prices way up but you know
01:05what a year has passed Andrea and the
01:07rest of the market has caught up to them
01:09so they were kind of first out of the
01:11gate with uh very high prices and
01:13everybody seems to have caught up but
01:14this is a good allrounder and I just
01:17want to clarify in Canada particularly
01:20the prices were quite high but as Zach
01:22mentioned it's all kind of worked out in
01:25the end of course the Honda HRV some
01:27pros it's spacious it's 9 in longer and
01:313 in wider than the previous model so
01:34you've got a big subcompact vehicle it's
01:37comfortable I would say it's got updated
01:39technology but it is missing some
01:42features yeah it doesn't have in the
01:44back seat an armrest or cup holders we
01:46found that very odd and another negative
01:49is it uses uh the Honda Civic platform
01:51the previous version was on the Honda
01:53Fit platform so as Andrew mentioned it
01:55got bigger it's gone one class bigger on
01:57the Civic platform and it uses the Civic
01:59base engine the 2 L which is Bulletproof
02:02by the way it's a great engine we have a
02:03Honda Civic with this engine no problem
02:05but in this application it's a little
02:08Pokey it's Pokey in the city if you're
02:11just running errands going from A to B
02:13it's no problem you'll actually find
02:15that the power is sufficient it's when
02:17you get on the highway and it's the
02:19passing power that uh it's a little bit
02:22slow you're going to have to pack a
02:23lunch to make a move uh but it does a
02:27lot well overall JD power gives it a
02:30great reliability score of 82 out of 100
02:34I was a little bit disappointed with the
02:36fuel economy on this model and also that
02:39there's no hybrid option but I hope one
02:41will come from Honda okay so we
02:43mentioned it's on the Civic platform it
02:44has the Civic interior which was a
02:47standout when the Civic arrived and
02:49they've used it through many vehicles
02:51and it works perfectly well in this
02:53product so that's the HRV now let's get
02:56into the specs the HRV has a 2 L
02:584cylinder matched to a CVT 158
03:02horsepower and 138 lbet of torque
03:05front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive
03:07options are available here's the price
03:09range in Canada we'll get to the US in
03:11just a second the base front-wheel drive
03:12model starts at just over
03:14$31,000 and the most expensive EXL with
03:17navigation is 40 Grand in the United
03:21States the base model is $24,000 and the
03:23most expensive EXL is
03:27$275,000 here's the fuel economy 9.4 L
03:30per 100 km in the city 7.8 on the
03:33highway that's 25 M per gallon City 30 m
03:37per gallon highway up next is Ika seltos
03:39with two powertrain options and I would
03:42say that this is a class leader for
03:45value and features it has features that
03:49many of the sub compact vehicles just
03:51don't have like power front seats driver
03:54seat memory ventilated front seats
03:57heated rear seats and a power tailgate
03:59yeah these are all things you kind of
04:01get in the compact class but in the subc
04:03compact Class A lot of these vehicles
04:05just don't offer those features and when
04:08you add in what they're charging for
04:10this compared to other vehicles it
04:12really is the value leader and it's one
04:15of the biggest in this class so it could
04:18be our overall number one pick but
04:20that's not what we do here we let you
04:21decide what you like and you don't like
04:23now on the negative some people just
04:25don't like the look of it it's not the I
04:27wouldn't say it's the best looking in
04:28this class but uh you might be excited
04:31about the design when you know what you
04:33get and what you pay for it I really
04:34like the turbocharged engine it has
04:36plenty of power the base engine is uh a
04:40little bit slow on the highway it
04:42doesn't offer that great power obviously
04:44that the turbocharged engine has and
04:47it's wired Apple carplay and Android
04:49auto in the selos no Wireless at this
04:52time for Kia but we hear these new
04:54models will be getting it JD Power
04:57actually gives the Kia SOS a great great
04:59reliability score of 82 out of 100 okay
05:02so the base engine comes with a
05:04continuously variable transmission and
05:06then the turbo comes with a new 8-speed
05:08they got rid of the Dual clutch and went
05:09to an 8speed so let's go through all the
05:11specs the base engine is a 2 L
05:134-cylinder matched to a
05:15CVT 147 horsepower and 132 lb feet of
05:19torque front wheeel drive and all-wheel
05:21drive options are available there's also
05:24the 1.6 L turbocharged 4 cylinder with
05:27an 8-speed automatic transmission 195
05:30horsepower and 195 lb feet of torque
05:33this is an all-wheel drive model we'll
05:35go through the US pricing in just a
05:37moment here's the price spread for
05:39Canada the base model starts at
05:42$275,000 and goes on the xline 1.6t to
05:47$41,000 in the United States the base
05:49model starts at just over $224,000 and
05:52the most expensive model is just under
05:55$30,000 for the base 2 ler the fuel
05:58economy is 8.8 l L per 100 km in the
06:00city 7.5 on the highway that's 27 m per
06:04gallon City 31 m per gallon highway the
06:07turbocharged engine gets 9.4 L per 100
06:10km in the city 8.7 on the highway that's
06:1325 MP gallon City 27 MP gallon highway I
06:17just want to add before moving on to the
06:19next vehicle that KIA offers a warranty
06:21of 5 years which is more than many of
06:24the competitors except for of course
06:26Hyundai they offer five years as well
06:29next in alphabetical order is the Subaru
06:32cross trk it offers two powertrains and
06:35it's brand new for this year the design
06:38of it you wouldn't know it's all new but
06:40it has been improved improved platform
06:43they made it stiffer they improved the
06:45dash they put in the larger screen on
06:46most trims of course Subaru comes
06:49standard with their all-wheel drive
06:50system and great ground clearance and
06:52this is really a good Swiss army knife
06:54it does everything well yeah and I think
06:56the ground clearance and that all-wheel
06:58drive system is a big deal for some
07:00people purchasing subar Vehicles the
07:03cross trck gets 8.7 in of ground
07:05clearance and of course that Wilderness
07:07model gets more um so it's a terrific
07:10vehicle that's spacious Subaru really
07:12worked on the Comfort level of the seats
07:14and we found um that they are more
07:17comfortable in this new model now one
07:20thing that it is missing is a power
07:22tailgate we did speak to Subaru about
07:25that and they have no plans to bring one
07:26in well you know what most vehicles in
07:28this class don't have a power lift gate
07:30there's a few outliers there and we've
07:32already highlighted one uh so you know
07:34what this is a nice compelling package
07:36and it's surprising because it has a
07:39four cylinder and a CVT or continuously
07:42variable transmission they can usually
07:44be a little bit droney but the
07:46surprising thing with the cross trck
07:48it's one of the quietest vehicles in
07:49this class yeah it it does a great job
07:52with insulating the cabin and subar
07:55actually improved on that once again and
07:57with this new model and of course course
07:59for this new model the manual
08:00transmission is gone and the plug-in
08:03hybrid is also gone I think that that is
08:06a shame because people are looking for
08:08an electrified option in this category
08:11JD Power gives the cross trck a score of
08:1480 out of 100 all right let's get into
08:16all the specs the base engine is a 2 L
08:184cylinder matched to a CVT 152
08:22horsepower and 145 lbet of torque the
08:25second option is a more powerful 2.5 l
08:29182 horsepower and 178 lbet of torque
08:33standard all-wheel drive here's the
08:35price range for the cross Trek the US in
08:37just a second it starts at $31,500 in
08:42$4,700 for the top trim the base model
08:45in the United States is just over
08:47$25,000 and the most expensive model is
08:51$32,000 here's the fuel economy for the
08:53base 2 L 8.5 L per 100 km in the city
08:57and 7 L on the highway that's 27 m per
09:00gallon City 34 m per gallon highway the
09:032.5 L is 8.8 L per 100 km in the city
09:07seven on the highway that's 26 M per
09:10gallon City 33 m per gallon highway up
09:13next is the Toyota Corolla cross with
09:16two powertrain options so we do have the
09:18honorable mentions coming up in just a
09:20second and then we have a tie for our
09:21fifth place vehicle so this Corolla
09:24cross is going to be hard to beat if you
09:26want a fuel economy champion because one
09:28of of the two powertrains is Toyota's
09:31hybrid system it delivers great fuel
09:33economy in a package that is going to
09:35appeal to a lot of people and Toyota is
09:38the only one except for Kia with the
09:40Nero that's offering a hybrid option in
09:43this Sub Compact class it's spacious it
09:46offers some good rear seat legro and
09:48cargo space it's got all the updated
09:51technology in it of course it doesn't
09:53have the features that something like
09:55the cellto has but it does offer a power
09:59tailgate which is good all right the
10:01inside is a bit Bland uh but you're not
10:03buying this vehicle for its Aesthetics
10:05really you're buying it because brand
10:07appeal it's a it's a Toyota it's the
10:10hybrid system and unlike the Kia Nero
10:13which is also a hybrid this has more
10:15power a lot more power and it's an e
10:18all-wheel drive system meaning you get
10:20the rear wheels powered by a small
10:22electric motor and the Kia doesn't offer
10:24that so if you want all-wheel drive a
10:26hybrid and a subcompact this is the only
10:28one yeah you'll be surprised to hear as
10:31well that the hybrid top trim actually
10:33comes in under some of these gas model
10:37top trims of other brands so I think
10:39that that's offering a lot of value for
10:42a hybrid vehicle JD Power gives the
10:45coroll across a score of 82 out of 100
10:49there is one negative that I feel with
10:51the gas model is that when you're on the
10:54highway that cabin does get louder and I
10:56wouldn't say it's quick with the passing
10:59either but the um hybrid is quite a
11:02great option we did find the steering on
11:04the hybrid to be a little bit vague okay
11:07Pro tip if you're going to go into the
11:09dealer just get the hybrid you'll thank
11:11us after all right let's get into the
11:13specs the gas model has a 2 L 4-
11:15cylinder engine matched to a CVT 169
11:19horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque front
11:22wheeel drive and all wheel drive options
11:23are available a hybrid with a 2 L 4
11:27cylinder is matched to an ecv
11:29it gets a combined 195 horsepower and
11:32it's standard all-wheel drive here's the
11:34price range in Canada we'll do the US in
11:36a second the gas model starts at just
11:39over $30,000 and goes to
11:42$385,000 the hybrid starts at
11:45$37,000 and goes to just under
11:47$40,000 in the United States the gas
11:52$235,000 and goes to
11:54$29,000 the high road at just under
11:56$28,000 up to $31,000
11:59here's the fuel economy for the base gas
12:01engine 8.1 L per 100 kmet in the city
12:047.4 on the highway that's 29 m per
12:08gallon City 32 m per gallon highway the
12:11hybrid is rated at 5.2 L per 100 kmers
12:14in the city 6.2 on the highway that's 45
12:17m per gallon in the city 38 m per gallon
12:20highway now we've moved our final picks
12:23out of alphabetical order because we
12:25couldn't decide on that last pick in our
12:29top five Zach what did you go for well
12:31we're going to do rock paper scissors
12:32see who goes first okay that's fine by
12:363 one two three oh shoot okay you go
12:40first okay so I could not leave this one
12:44off although I like Zach could although
12:46I like Zach's pick a lot it wasn't
12:49enough for me to miss the one that I
12:51love the most the Mazda
12:54cx30 if you ask me it is the heavy
12:58performer in this Sub Compact class
13:00whether you choose the non-turbo or the
13:03turbocharged engine it is terrific it's
13:06engaging and it's fun to drive a
13:09negative to this vehicle is the lack of
13:11rear Headroom and cargo space as well as
13:14rear legro but this is how I look at it
13:17it's a sub compact vehicle can we not
13:21have fun in the sub compact class still
13:24if you need a bigger one go for the CX5
13:27and move up to the compa back seat's too
13:29small cargo area is too small
13:31turbocharged engine is out of step with
13:33the industry everybody's going to
13:34hybrids and fuel efficient they get a
13:36turbo that is way too expensive for what
13:38you get and it doesn't have independent
13:41rear suspension that's five for me no
13:43disagree all right all right uh do you
13:45want to hear mine yeah okay what and
13:47this is going to be controversial as
13:49well there's going to be a lot of haters
13:50I can I can feel the the keyboards
13:52clicking away right now the Chevrolet
13:55Tracks and the number one reason why I
13:58chose the Chevrolet Tracks is because of
14:00value in Canada the tracks the most
14:03expensive model including Freight is
14:06$31,000 the most expensive model in the
14:09United States is uh 24 Grand yeah like
14:13just think about that it's a real value
14:15play it's got lots of room it actually
14:19performs and handles well and I just
14:22think that has got some great things
14:24about it negative xandria MH only
14:26front-wheel dri and a lot of people
14:28don't like the fact that it's got a
14:29turbo three-cylinder engine well the
14:31worry is is how reliable is this turbo
14:34engine um it's new I can tell you that
14:37the previous model got a great
14:39reliability score of 83 out of 100 from
14:42JD Power but this is new and there have
14:44been some complaints about this model
14:46there are some glitches with the
14:48infotainment system some of the um gear
14:51changing has been a problem but I have
14:54to say with Zach this is offering
14:56incredible value at a time time where
14:59people are having a tough time putting
15:01food on their table so I applaud
15:03Chevrolet for coming out with a vehicle
15:07um that is Affordable and it is spacious
15:10and it comes standard with some great
15:13technology including wirless Apple
15:15carplay and Android auto you're coming
15:17to my no but if I could have them both
15:21on the list I would be happy but I
15:23cannot go with the Chevrolet Tracks over
15:26my Mazda cx30 it's pocketbook issue time
15:30everybody's complaining about the
15:32economy pocketbook trumps your turbo cx3
15:36I want to have some fun one thing for me
15:39when I get into a vehicle the vehicle
15:41that I buy has got to have some fun
15:44factor to it I want to put a smile on my
15:46face and Mazda delivers that for me I'd
15:49smile every time I look at my bank
15:50balance all right let's get into the
15:51specs of these two the tra has one
15:54powertrain option it's a 1.2 L
15:56turbocharged 3 cylinder with a six-speed
15:59automatic transmission 137 horsepower
16:02and 162 lb feet of torque front-wheel
16:05drive only we'll do the incredible us
16:07pricing in just a moment right now the
16:09Stellar Canadian pricing it starts at
16:13$245,000 and the most expensive tracks
16:15is 31 Grand in the United States it
16:20$25,000 and only goes to just under
16:23$24,000 the fuel economy is 8.3 L per
16:26100 kilm in the city 7 .4 on the highway
16:30that's 28 MP gallon City 32 MP gallon
16:33highway let's get into the terrific cx30
16:37two powertrain options a non-turbo and a
16:40turbocharged 2.5 L 4 cylinder both match
16:44to a six-speed automatic transmission
16:46the non-turbo model has 191 horsepower
16:49and 186 pound feet of torque the
16:53powerful 2.5 l t has 227 horsepower and
16:583 110 lb feet of torque on regular fuel
17:01you get a bit of a bump and power if you
17:03used premium 250 horsepower and 320 lbet
17:07of torque us pricing in a moment in
17:09Canada the base model of the cx30 is
17:13$31,000 and the most expensive turbo
17:15model is 43 Grand in the United States
17:18the base model is just under
17:20$25,000 and the most expensive model is
17:25$37,000 here's the fuel economy for the
17:27base engine 9.9 L per 100 kmers in the
17:30city 7.7 on the highway that's 24 m per
17:34gallon City 31 MP gallon highway for the
17:37turbo it's 10.5 L per 100 kilm in the
17:41city 7.9 on the highway that's 22 mes
17:45per gallon in the city 30 on the highway
17:47well there it is Andrea a five and a
17:49bonus a real bonus mhm I can hear the
17:53keyboards clacking away right now or the
17:55on your phone are you camp Andrea you
17:58camp Zach which is it are you it's it
18:00price or power all right so that's our
18:02top five sub compacts now we get into
18:05what Andrea our honorable
18:10mentions first up is the Hyundai Kona
18:13with three power train options a
18:15non-turbo a turbo gas model as well as a
18:18pure EV the Kona is all new with updated
18:22technology a nicer interior design it's
18:25bigger than the outgoing model but it
18:27lacks some featur Fe compared to some of
18:30its competitors like the seltos so this
18:32is the cousin to the Kia SOS which did
18:34make the top five why didn't the Kona
18:36make the top five and the Kona is
18:38available with an EV we haven't driven
18:39that one yet unfortunately uh it's just
18:41comes down to the feature list in the
18:43pricing Kia really adds more features in
18:45their product versus Hyundai and uh
18:49their price is less so that makes the
18:51list and the Kona not so much I also
18:53thought that the Kona because it got
18:55bigger and it no longer has the Dual
18:57clutch transmission is it's just not as
19:00fun as I remember but if you want
19:02something that's bigger and that's
19:04comfortable the Kona is a great option
19:07our second honorable mention goes to the
19:09Kia Nero the Nero has three electrified
19:12powertrain options hybrid plug-in hybrid
19:15and a pure EV it's priced well it's
19:17spacious comfortable and it gets great
19:20fuel economy unfortunately there's no
19:23all-wheel drive option and the hybrid is
19:25underpowered so this has a lot going for
19:28it it's big when you get in the back
19:30seat there surprising amount of space I
19:33like the kind of fun looking design the
19:35interior is very logically laid out so
19:38why is it in the list well because
19:39there's no all-wheel drive option but
19:41wait a second you just chose the Chevy
19:43tracks which doesn't have an all-wheel
19:45drive option but did you check out the
19:47price of the tracks that's why it made
19:49it on the list for me this Nero uh the
19:52base model is the hybrid and it is a
19:54little bit underpowered compared to many
19:55of these others GD power gives zero a
19:58reliability score of 76 out of 100 and I
20:01just want to mention 83 out of 100 for
20:04the previous model Kona this new one
20:06obviously hasn't been rated yet and our
20:09final honorable mention goes to the
20:11Volkswagen Taos which is quite unique in
20:14its own way it's got a great dual clutch
20:17transmission it's spacious and it's
20:19quite fun to drive for this subcompact
20:21class so the vehicles that have the
20:24optional engines with more power so
20:26that'd be the selos the Kona and the
20:28Mazda cx30 Volkswagen gives you a turbo
20:321.5 L with a dual clutch Transmission in
20:35every single TOS it is quite engaging to
20:37drive it's one of the biggest in this
20:40class it is a big panel roof I kind of
20:42like the design and it's reminisent of
20:44the old golf uh the dashboard anyway
20:47doesn't hasn't gone to that full Digital
20:48dash they have in like GTI they've kept
20:51the older Dash in this new product and I
20:53like that there's a fair amount of
20:55plastic in the tows and I just want to
20:56point out that the front wheel Drive
20:58model doesn't get a dual clutch
21:00transmission it's an automatic
21:01transmission but all all-wheel drive
21:04models do get it JD Power gives the to a
21:06reliability score of 77 out of 100 so
21:10there's our list there's our honorable
21:12mentions I'd love to hear your order
21:15which one would you choose and why
21:16that's why we do don't do them 54 321
21:19because for one person might be all
21:21about the power and then there's all
21:23about the thriftiness over here gosh
21:25he's really playing it up isn't he a
21:27little too too much I might add no
21:29there's not enough you can't lay it on
