00:02stories you've ever heard as a producer
00:05you know when you've produced the main
00:06idea of your project maybe it's a drop
00:09or a chorus or just a full 16 Bar Loop
00:12and as you get more into finishing the
00:14project it just seems like progress gets
00:16slower and slower it feels like all you
00:18do for a few days is just open the
00:20project maybe you adjust some things
00:22here and there but overall the track
00:24Never evolves which leads to you not
00:26finishing it this is precisely what 99%
00:29of producers and artists go through but
00:31just imagine a reality where you finish
00:33double the amount of music that you do
00:35right now there's is one thing that not
00:36enough producers know about it's
00:38something that's literally been in front
00:39of you this entire time it just exists
00:42everywhere in the world after I learned
00:44this the game was changed it's called
00:46the Paro principle or the 8020 rule you
00:49might have heard of it before but just
00:51let me explain so you can finish more
00:52music it essentially means that roughly
00:5580% of the effects come from 20% of the
00:58causes and you might be like well how
01:00does this apply to me how does this
01:02apply to my music well trust me I'll
01:04show you and hopefully I'm going to blow
01:06your mind so let's just make something
01:08real quick but I'm not going to focus
01:09too much on production for this
01:14video yeah I like this one
01:22better this is 20% of our efforts right
01:25now making 80% of the
01:57interesting start adding more notes
02:38beautiful I'm just going to arrange this
02:40a little bit add a little bit more
02:41details not too many and then we can be
02:55done 80% of our track comes from 20% of
02:58our efforts which is exactly what I just
03:01did there but the extra 20% of our track
03:04all the fine details and all that stuff
03:06come from 80% of our efforts and this
03:09makes so much sense this is exactly why
03:11all these producers end up quitting
03:13before they actually completely finish
03:15the track the most fun part about making
03:18a track is that initial burst of
03:20creativity and the other 20% all of the
03:22details is a lot less fun and that's
03:24when all of these problems come in time
03:26and progress seems to get slower and
03:28slower and you begin to feel feel
03:30resistant because it's getting boring
03:32and you have a lack of direction of
03:34where to go with the track you're just
03:35in this kind of plateau state where it
03:38feels like nothing really gets done now
03:40think about if you were able to get
03:42through this almost every single time
03:44how far would it take your skills and
03:46here are some ways we can do that number
03:48one is set a clear direction for where
03:50you want to take the track this is
03:52powerful because it literally sets a
03:54direction for where you want to go and
03:56it helps you stay on track that one's
03:59simple enough and another one is to stop
04:01aiming for Perfection now a few years
04:03ago I think it was in 2020 I got in
04:05contact with one of the biggest EDM
04:08Artists in the world and I'm not going
04:09to name him he was part of a group
04:11actually I remember sending some demos
04:13for his label and he was straight up
04:15honest with me which is exactly what I
04:16needed he told me that the tracks I sent
04:18just weren't there yet and that my
04:20skills weren't there yet and after
04:21hearing that I felt kind of disheartened
04:24because I did not want to let go of the
04:26tracks but he also told me that I
04:28shouldn't worry about it because within
04:29a few few years my skills would be
04:31higher and I'd be making better tracks
04:33anyway so stop aiming for Perfection and
04:35just learn to let go they don't have to
04:37be perfect for you to finish them I
04:39guarantee within a year from now your
04:42skills will be way higher and you're
04:44going to make better tracks anyway you
04:46probably won't even think about the
04:48track that you're focusing on right now
04:49and if for some reason you still are
04:52just remake it with the new skills that
04:53you have a year later the third thing is
04:55to not be complacent and to break any
04:58resistance that you feel be mindful of
05:00why you're listening to your track over
05:02and over again is it actually helping it
05:05sometimes you're going to have to force
05:06yourself to finish the last 20% of the
05:08track and that's okay sometimes your
05:11mind or your lyic system takes over and
05:13you're going to find every excuse to not
05:15finish the track to not make music all
05:19anyway and the final thing is to quit
05:22while you're ahead I know this might
05:24seem contradictory to all the other
05:25stuff I just said especially about
05:27breaking resistance but sometimes it is
05:30better to just quit on the track if it's
05:32going to go nowhere if you really think
05:34that it's not going anywhere within the
05:35next hour might as well just quit and
05:38then you can use that time for another
05:39track now think about it if you take
05:41this advice and implement it right now
05:44into one of your projects what would
05:46happen Okay so it's about a day later
05:48after I made the original idea of this
05:50project but whenever I was refining the
05:51details doing the structure and stuff
05:53the last 20% I didn't record because I'm
05:56an idiot but that's okay I'll just walk
05:59you through it most most of the time
06:00whenever you make the main idea that can
06:02take like 10 minutes to I don't know an
06:04hour and a half usually after you do
06:06that just take a break for like a day or
06:08even a few hours because you want to
06:10have a fresh perspective whenever you
06:12come back to finish the last part of the
06:14track I'll just play part of the track
06:43pretty good all I did was take that 80%
06:45of the track that main idea and of
06:47course built off of it to create the
06:49rest of the track and during this
06:50process I just followed the guidelines
06:52that we spoke about a lot of the time
06:53when you're producing the rest of the
06:55track you're kind of adjusting things
06:57aimlessly and just doing random stuff
06:59hope that it's going to go somewhere so
07:01setting a mental direction obviously
07:03sometimes you want to produce with no
07:04specific aim in mind but when we're
07:06talking about finishing the rest of your
07:08track and you don't have any direction
07:10on where you want to take it or how you
07:11want to finish it it's almost like
07:13wanting to start a fire with a
07:14magnifying glass you already have the
07:16firewood laid out you got to take your
07:17magnifying glass but instead of focusing
07:19the energy of the sun all you do is just
07:22wave it around like this and of course I
07:24could probably do more stuff here I
07:25could probably fix the mix up a little
07:27bit do things to add more character and
07:29uniqueness to the track but I'm at a
07:31point where I'm happy with it obviously
07:33you don't want to get complacent you
07:34want to keep improving your music and
07:36stuff like that but you get what I'm
07:37saying right basically just don't keep
07:39trying to make the most perfect track
07:41ever within the next year your skills
07:43will go up and you'll probably make
07:45something better anyway if we can get
07:47better every single day setting
07:49direction for our tracks and all of that
07:50stuff then we can be ahead of the game
07:52now that you've learned all this imagine
07:54going down the same path that you were
07:56before where you aren't aware of this
07:57stuff and you still Plateau every single
07:59time you produce I'm not perfect with
08:01this but I've been trying to take action
08:03on this as much as possible and it's
08:05been working and I want it to be the
