00:07so it sounds like for this particular
00:09sound we need to go an octave up on this
00:22one so you want to add synth layers to
00:24your songs but you don't know where to
00:26start I was there too however with the
00:28tools that you already have it might be
00:30easier than you think the first thing
00:33that I want is like an arpeggio PLU and
00:34the second thing that I want is some
00:36sort of pad okay so the first way is
00:38just using a preset and so inside of
00:40Ableton I'm going to go to instruments
00:42and like I said I want some sort of
00:43pluck and so I'm literally going to
00:44search for pluck and we're going to go
00:46through these sounds to see what sounds
00:47the closest to give us a good starting
00:57point this one's pretty close this
01:00Bridge pluck here now that I found my
01:01sound I'm going to use an arpeggiator
01:03inside of Ableton so I'm going to go to
01:04all and then just find arpeggiator click
01:06it before that sound that we just found
01:09and so this is what we have right
01:12now so I want my ARP to be in 16th notes
01:15so under rate I'm going to bring it to
01:19notes now I'm going to start turning all
01:21the knobs just to see if I can get it
01:47okay so now that we have it close let's
01:48listen in context to see if it sounds
01:50good with everything
02:01okay so I'm not hearing it too much so
02:04I'm going to do is I'm going to make it
02:05an octave higher inside of Ableton I'm
02:07just going to grab everything control a
02:09hold shift and hit the up Arrow so
02:11that's going to go up one
02:24octave sounds pretty good I want it to
02:27be a little bit wider now we can come in
02:29here and start to see if we can make it
02:31wider given these parameters in here
02:33there's a lot going on and if it's too
02:34intimidating for you there's a free
02:36plugin and it's literally called wider
02:38so here's the the plugin here this is by
02:40polyverse Infected Mushroom wider and it
02:43literally does what it says and so you
02:45have 0% to 200% and this is just your
02:47width here and so I'm going to play it
02:49again in context and then we're going to
02:50turn up this wider plugin here
03:01so now it's just a little bit too loud
03:03so I'm going to bring it
03:07in sounds pretty good it's right there
03:10you know next let's try to find a pad so
03:12I'm going to do the same thing
03:24pad so I like this analog soft pad I'm
03:26going to bring it into my pad chords
03:28here and right away I'm going to hear
03:35like so you can see the difference here
03:37it's not a controller this is actually
03:39the wave table plugin inside of Ableton
03:42and so a lot of this comes down to just
03:44moving things around moving all the
03:46knobs to see what happens and so with
03:48this solo I'm going to just start moving
03:49things around to see what happens looks
03:51like we have our wave table here which
03:53has different wave shapes and you can
03:55change this based on you know this
03:57spectrum here you have a filter and then
03:59you have your and stuff like that with
04:00an envelope filter and stuff like that
04:02however again that's too high level
04:04right now and so the biggest thing is
04:05just turn knobs see what
04:19happens okay so it looks like you have
04:21two oscillators in here which is
04:23basically just sound sound one sound two
04:26what type of sound is sound one and what
04:28type of sound is sound two you can see
04:30here you have your different things here
04:31but again don't worry about that too
04:33much just move start moving things
04:57around see like this Matrix and like
04:59that's too much for me I I don't know
05:01what this is but I'm not too worried
05:02about that it's close it's really close
05:04just for fun let's add a Reverb so I'm
05:06going to go to all type in Reverb and
05:08I'm just going to grab the stock Reverb
05:10from Ableton and I want to bring the
05:11Decay up which is basically just the
05:20Reverb again everything that you put in
05:22there start turning on see what it does
05:32let's bring this an octave up because
05:33this arpeggio goes all the way through
05:35you can see I don't have my AR I mean my
05:37uh pad going let's add a quick note
05:39there just to see what it sounds like
05:41it's just going to do one note I don't
05:47Legato as you're doing this you're going
05:48to start to hear maybe a note change
06:02so these these fit really really well
06:04feel like both of them fit really good
06:06with the pluck I realized that having a
06:08more metallic pluck it's going to peek
06:09out of the mix a little bit more and so
06:11if you have a dense mix kind of like
06:13this is here you're going to want
06:14something more metallic for your plucks
06:16just so they poke out a little bit okay
06:18so for the next Idea Idea number two we
06:20are going to pick an instrument inside
06:22of our doll could be inside of any Dawn
06:24that you have as well the uh instrument
06:26that I'm going to choose is drift so
06:28with drift I am the most familiar with
06:30drift however that doesn't mean that I
06:32know it a ton I think this is a good
06:33experiment to show you how I would go
06:35about just exploring the plugin to find
06:37the sound that's close enough to what I
06:40think fits in this mix so this arpeggio
06:42I have the arpeggiator 16 still
06:44everything is the same here I didn't
06:46touch anything and I just brought in
06:47this is just a stock drift here and so
06:50let's see what it sounds
06:52like what's crazy is it's already really
06:55close it's super close to what we need
06:58however there's some things inside of
06:59drift that we can do to kind of make it
07:01more stereo and stuff like that um again
07:03there's a few things that I know how to
07:05do inside a drift and so let me show you
07:06the first things so the first one is
07:08turning your mode into stereo and then
07:10turning the percentage of the stereo up
07:12which is basically your width so I'm
07:14going to turn that up and you can hear
07:21does awesome that's already like super
07:24close now let's just start turning knobs
07:52nice it's really close already I'm going
07:54to immediately grab a Reverb and just
07:56Chuck it in there see what happens
08:09Decay nice next thing that we can do is
08:11inside the arpegiator let's start
08:13turning knobs and moving stuff around
08:15there there's some things that I really
08:16like inside of the arpeggiator and so
08:18the first thing that I usually do is
08:33let's see what it sounds like in our mix
08:34we might need to make it more
08:47metallic let's say that we wanted to
08:49make it more metallic the first way that
08:51I would go about doing it again if I was
08:52just like I don't know what all this
08:54stuff does I don't know I'm just going
08:55to grab I don't know let's say let's do
08:58a saturator here so I'm going to put
09:15Reverb so you can hear it's already just
09:18pushing it a lot more so I'm going to
09:28down Okay so we're going to do the same
09:30thing with our pad I'm going to use
09:31drift again so right now this is what
09:35like pretty boring right I'm going to
09:38immediately start to do the things that
09:39I did on my arpeggio bring the mode up
09:41to 100 then I'm going to bring my attack
09:44and just start to mess with these things
09:45I want it to kind of like swell in and
09:48that's that attack knob here so you can
09:49see when I move this this is here
09:51showing you like this is how long it's
09:52going to take before it reaches its peak
10:00I'm going to mess with my release so it
10:01kind of Blends into the other notes
10:24there so you can see here so with
10:26oscillator one or sound one you have
10:28sound one and your your sound shape
10:31basically but this goes all the way here
10:32so this is going to be the envelopes for
10:34sound one and this is going to be the
10:36envelopes for sound two and so that's
10:38why again just move things around you're
10:39going to start to see like oh there's a
10:40two there oh this is OS two okay so I'm
10:43assuming this is kind of messing with
10:44this here that's not bad okay I'm going
10:46to immediately put a Reverb on there to
10:49see what it sounds like
11:02all right let's listen in
11:24context so it sounds like for this
11:26particular sound we need to go and
11:27octave up on this one let's bring our
11:29release down on here sounds like it's
11:41long and so just playing around with
11:43drift until you understand it that's
11:45what it is there's plenty of tutorials
11:47on how to use it exactly but this is my
11:49Approach and just kind of experimenting
11:51exploring seeing what things do then you
11:53can go to the tutorial and be like ah
11:54okay these make a lot more sense now so
11:57the point of this video wasn't to really
11:58show you you and give you like the
12:00fundamentals of synthesis and what an
12:03oscillator is right the point of this
12:04video was to show you how I go about
12:06trying to get things in there fast so I
12:08can just fill in and add layers to my
12:11song and there's so many other ways that
12:12you can go about doing that the cool
12:14thing about you know buying other
12:15plugins and other synthesizers is it's
12:18going to have your imagination just run
12:20that much further and give you sounds
12:23that are a lot closer a lot faster and
12:26that's the way that I like to work I
12:27like to work fast I like to get the
12:28sound in there so I can move on to
12:30adding you know maybe a different guitar
12:32part or a different bass part again I'm
12:34not too worried about the fine details
12:35of like what this synth does what this
12:38oscillation is doing to my synthesis
12:41it's like that's too much for me I just
12:43want to find a sound that's close tweak
12:46The Sound by turning all the knobs
12:47getting it close chucking it in there
12:49blending it in and that's it you know
12:51and so I decided to use both of the
12:53drift sounds that we made um I feel like
12:55it sounded really good and so dudes
