00:06podcast and today it's going to be like
00:08a storytime hour we go deep on a subject
00:10I've got a episode prepared for you
00:12called the seven deadly sins of music
00:15production I actually did an episode a
00:17while back it might be a couple years
00:19old now really popular one called the
00:21seven deadly sins of mixing and in that
00:24one it was really a response to someone
00:26reached out and said hey Justin what are
00:28the things that you find as a m ing
00:30engineer that come up in mixes again and
00:31again what are some of the most common
00:33things that go wrong so we can avoid
00:34them in our mixes and that's what that
00:36episode the seven deadly sins of mixing
00:38is about really targeted and it just
00:40happened to be seven it came out to like
00:42I'm looking for the things that happen
00:44again and again and it really is seven
00:46things if I did eight or if I did six it
00:49wouldn't have been
00:50true ever since I did that episode I've
00:53wanted to zoom out and do it on music
00:55production more generally but when we
00:57zoom out and go wide and figure out
00:59those things that are really holding us
01:00back in our whole careers as Musicians
01:03music producers audio Engineers or
01:05really honestly in any creative field
01:08when we go that broad music production
01:10generally we have to go broad with our
01:12seven things and our seven deadly sins
01:14today are going to be the actual seven
01:17deadly sins yes we're going to do Pride
01:21lust uh we're g that one's a weird one
01:23we're going to do that one in a very
01:25different way than you might expect now
01:27that I've said that we're going to do
01:28lust in a different way than you'd
01:30expect I wonder if you might now expect
01:33what I'm going to do or maybe I did that
01:35so I could trick you I don't know all
01:37that I know is you don't mess with a
01:38sicilian when death is on the line all
01:40right we're going to do Envy we're going
01:41to do sloth we're going to do all of
01:43these because we're looking at this not
01:46in a religious sense this is meant to be
01:47you know accessible to anyone whether
01:49super secular atheist religious whatever
01:53but I really think that the seven deadly
01:55sins it's almost a bit of a misnomer
01:58they're not really s sin so much as they
02:00are habits of mind usually when we think
02:03of like a sin it's an action a
02:05wrongdoing but each of these seven
02:07deadly sins is a habit of mind we fall
02:09into and we don't actually have to
02:12specifically do something wrong to be
02:15experiencing one of these seven deadly
02:17sins they
02:19are ways of thinking ways of processing
02:22the world that are wrong and lead us in
02:25the wrong direction don't lead us in
02:27fruitful directions and just being ble
02:30to put a name on these things being able
02:32to say to yourself oh man that's Pride
02:35effing with me again or oh I'm starting
02:38to get that Envy Feeling Just
02:40recognizing them can help us really
02:42reset our whole framing of an issue that
02:45we're running into and lead us to much
02:47more success we'll get into sponsor talk

03:00cuz I want to get right into the big mam
03:02Jama what they call the mother of all
03:05sins and that is pride the sin that
03:08leads to all other sins or in this case
03:11the habit of mind the mental trap that
03:14we fall into all of us all of us fall
03:17into this one and this is the number one
03:19thing that holds people back from
03:21success in
03:22music it holds people back from success
03:25in audio and in life in general and it's
03:28definitely something that I've had to
03:29over come and continue to have to
03:31overcome you're never going to overcome
03:33these things and be like done with the
03:35battle forever that's not how it works
03:37they're going to come back but pride is
03:40that idea of let me see if I can
03:43encapsulate in a sentence the problem
03:46with pride is that you can't get to
03:49where you want to go if you're
03:51pretending that you're already
03:53there and pride stops so many of us in
03:56our tracks from succeeding with what we
03:58actually need to do this steps we need
04:00to go through to create a career for
04:02ourselves to get really good at mixing
04:05to get really good at an instrument
04:07Pride telling ourselves that we're not
04:10already just good enough but better than
04:12good enough and we shouldn't have to
04:13stoop to the same things that others
04:15have to stoop to because we're too good
04:19we're too big we're too talented oh man
04:23and the worst the worst you're going to
04:26get hit with pride is when it's partly
04:28true when you are exceptionally talented
04:32and I have seen people be held back by
04:36their
04:37talents more than people get held back
04:39for lack of talent let me say that again
04:42when it comes to succeeding in music
04:44you're more likely to get held back by
04:47your talent than by your lack of
04:50talent this sounds crazy to people
04:52because you think oh man Talent you got
04:54to be talented at music to succeed in
04:57music well you've probably got to have
04:59some aptitude you know if you are legit
05:03ton deaf you're probably not going to
05:05become a great
05:07singer but then again there's some
05:08singers who have succeeded despite not
05:10being great
05:16singers I've run into this TR problem
05:18with pride and I think one of the
05:19reasons I succeeded at being an audio
05:21engineer and a general music production
05:24guy rather than succeeding at being a
05:27musician is that I had less Pride when
05:30it came to audio and music production
05:32when it came to audio and I started
05:34messing around with a for track we're
05:35going to do some story time here I'm
05:36going to give you some examples of Flesh
05:37the stuff out hopefully you can relate
05:38to some of them when I started messing
05:40around with the for track and started
05:42learning audio I was confronted with the
05:45fact that I didn't know what an ox send
05:48was or how it worked what a bus was and
05:51this concept was so foreign to me the
05:53idea that you could take an audio signal
05:55and split it in two and have it go to
05:57two different places at once this is
05:59crazy talk how would that even work I
06:01couldn't even wrap my head around that
06:02idea and here I was thinking I was a
06:04relatively smart guy couldn't understand
06:06that and my early recordings I mean they
06:10really sounded like the songs were
06:11coming through a
06:13pillow and I had to listen to them and
06:15go like wow this isn't good and one of
06:18the reasons I was able to say this isn't
06:20good is because I had no expectation of
06:22myself that I should be good and I could
06:25look at it honestly and be like yeah I'm
06:27not where I want to be and that this
06:30idea of going into audio knowing that I
06:33knew nothing helped me learn
06:37everything and anywhere else I've
06:39succeeded in
06:40life even if it's modest successes
06:44whether it's in jiujitsu or learning
06:47about economics or kind of trying to get
06:48my head around my finances all that
06:50stuff the only reason I was able to get
06:52some Mastery in those areas is because
06:54those are the areas where I admitted to
06:56myself I know absolutely nothing I'm
06:58terrible I suck I don't necessarily even
07:00have a natural aptitude so I'm going to
07:02have to start as if I know
07:07nothing and that that humbling of
07:09oneself and not putting yourself down
07:12not false humility false humility is
07:14putting yourself down hoping that
07:16someone else will compliment you right
07:17we all do that sometimes too right real
07:20humility is recognizing where you
07:22actually
07:23are false humility would be pretending
07:25you're even lower than you are real
07:27humility is to say wait a second
07:29if I want to get into understanding
07:31Finance or economics do I know what
07:34money is or why it's worth anything at
07:36all that was a question I had to ask
07:39myself when I wanted to learn economics
07:41and when I wanted to learn Finance I had
07:42to ask myself the question wait a second
07:44why are stocks worth anything it doesn't
07:48seem like you can do anything with them
07:50are they just like pogs like with pogs
07:52you could like trade pogs or with magic
07:54the Gathering cards or something like
07:56you use them in a game maybe there's
07:58some why are St worth anything at all
08:01and there's an answer to that question
08:03but you know what I've talked to people
08:04who have bachelor's degrees in economics
08:07who cannot give an intelligent answer to
08:09the question why are stocks worth
08:11anything at
08:13all if anyone wants to know the answer
08:15that question we can go into it in the
08:16comments uh I'm not going to give you
08:18the answer here because that'll be a
08:19whole another
08:21podcast but do you see how it was easy
08:23for me with audio because I admitted to
08:25myself I don't know this stuff and that
08:28allowed me to learn
08:30and now not being prideful not boasting
08:33matter of factly there are very few
08:36questions about audio and how it works
08:38about how the science of Sound Works
08:39about different people's approaches to
08:41doing things what are the common best
08:43practices in different schools and in
08:45different genres those are questions I
08:47can answer for you because each one of
08:49them I had to admit I didn't know the
08:50answer
08:52to this is sometimes tricky for people
08:55who have talent in music and I had some
08:57talent in music
09:00but once you start identifying with the
09:02idea that you have talent and you think
09:04that you should already be good enough
09:06and you're not able to humble yourself
09:09to the level of there's so much I don't
09:10know yet there's so much I could do
09:13better that number one sin of Pride will
09:16mess with you and get in the way so what
09:18is the antidote with pride it's humility
09:20it's accurately stating where you are
09:24not pretending you already are where you
09:27want to be taking actual stock of where
09:29you are taking actual stock of where you
09:32want to be where you want to wind up and
09:35then recognizing that a path between the
09:37two has to be created and you don't know
09:38what it is
09:40yet that's
09:42humility humility is also recognizing
09:44that other people know things that you
09:47don't know other people have skills that
09:49you don't have which leads us to the
09:52second big deadly sin and this is the
09:55other big killer when it comes to music
09:57production and audio
09:59I I'm doing these in the order of how
10:02much I think they
10:03affect specifically people in music
10:05production and this one man this number
10:07two one maybe it's even tied for number
10:10one and it is
10:12Envy oh this is a big one especially in
10:15the studio especially when you're always
10:17looking at how many other toys the other
10:19guys
10:21got and there are these magic toys that
10:24would just make everything better if you
10:26had them right and it's not only the
10:28magic toys we also know it's the
10:31advantages those other people had those
10:35rich kids who succeeded because they had
10:37everything handed them on a silver
10:40platter I have a whole episode about
10:42that one if you ever are really angry
10:44about uh rich kids in the music industry
10:46just Google colleti or sonic scoop uh
10:49rich kids in the music industry I think
10:50it's my best podcast episode ever not
10:52one most popular ones but it's one of
10:55the most helpful things I've ever done
10:56for a lot of people I think the comments
10:57in that one show it so you if you want
10:59to go really deep into this one about
11:01Envy check out that episode rich kids in
11:03the music
11:05industry but I've heard it said that
11:09jealousy is wanting what someone else
11:12has but Envy is even worse Envy is not
11:15wanting the other guy to have it to
11:17begin
11:19with oh man that's dark isn't
11:23it not even wanting others to have the
11:27advantages that they do
11:31and this is a dark one because a lot of
11:33us specifically even more so in the past
11:36when there were seemed like more
11:38barriers to entry in the world of audio
11:40and music
11:41production it really seemed like you
11:44needed all the fancy toys and the reason
11:45your record didn't sound great was
11:47because you didn't have all the toys or
11:49you didn't have all the advantages you
11:50didn't have all the time maybe that
11:52someone was independently wealthy
11:55had man there's so many success stories
11:57that just fly in the face base of this
11:59idea of you can't make it unless you're
12:00rich you can't make great signing
12:01records unless you have all the gear
12:03obviously patently not true and we can
12:04do a whole entire episode about that and
12:07there's also so many examples to the
12:08contrary where I've met people who had
12:11the trust fund they had the inheritance
12:12they built the fany studio and nothing
12:14came of
12:18it but the big thing with Envy is not
12:22wanting at others to have their
12:24advantages and for each of these seven
12:27deadly sins I mean when use the term
12:29seven deadly sins this comes out of a
12:32western religious tradition that idea
12:34that terminology but I think it's
12:36something that transcends all cultures
12:38just a
12:40great way of thinking about our negative
12:43habits of mind but in the tradition that
12:46the seven deadly sins come from they
12:47also have something called The Seven
12:48Virtues four cardinal virtues and three
12:50other virtues that we could talk on some
12:53other podcast episode so each one of
12:55these sins has a virtue that's the
12:58opposite of it and the one for Envy is
12:59very surprising for Pride The Virtue
13:02that's the opposite of pride is obvious
13:04right
13:05humility but what's the opposite of
13:08Envy what is the virtue that's the
13:11opposite of Envy Envy this one was
13:13really Illuminating for me when I read
13:17it The Virtue that's the opposite of
13:19Envy in this 1500 year old tradition
13:23virtue is the opposite of Envy is
13:27kindness
13:29and then you have to go back and think
13:30wait a second what even is
13:33kindness because you're not going to
13:35understand these seven deadly sins and
13:36these Seven Virtues unless you first
13:38humble yourself to say what do I even
13:39know what kindness is isn't that being
13:41nice isn't that what kindness is no
13:44that's not what kindness means look at
13:46the emology of it when whatever you want
13:47to really understand what a word means
13:49where it comes from where its heart is
13:50look at its emology its root
13:53kind kin to be kind is to be like
13:58someone else
14:00to show someone kindness is to recognize
14:03that you are like them and they are like
14:06you that we're close to being
14:10kin the antidote to Envy is to looking
14:14at other people who have what you want
14:17and
14:18saying good for you
14:21brother right that's awesome also
14:24kindness and the respect that well what
14:27one man can do what one man can achieve
14:30another man can do another man can
14:32achieve I'm like you I can have that too
14:35often Envy comes from us not being kind
14:39to others in that we're not seeing
14:40ourselves like them not allowing us to
14:42be happy for them that's one respect in
14:44which envy and kindness are opposite but
14:47another way that Envy comes up is we
14:49secretly see others that have something
14:51we don't have and we recognize that we
14:54don't have it ourselves and rather than
14:56admit to ourselves that that hurts and
14:58that there's a gap between where we are
15:00and where they are and we actually want
15:02to close that Gap
15:03potentially rather than recognize that
15:07that we can do
15:08that we see it as that's unattainable
15:12for me what you have is unattainable for
15:14me so I don't want you to have it but if
15:16you actually kind Not only would you be
15:19nice in the respect that you want good
15:20things to happen to them but you'd be
15:22kind in the respect of recognizing that
15:24you are like them and what they have
15:25achieved you can also achieve
15:30and not believing that about yourself is
15:32also one of the things that leads to
15:35Envy so when you feel that Envy bubble
15:37up inside of you you've got to think
15:39kindness in both of those ways kindness
15:40as in good for you brother but also
15:42kindness as in I'm kind of like you and
15:45if that's something I really want then I
15:47can get it for myself or and here's a
15:50third
15:51way families kin are made up of very
15:56many people who are different from one
15:57another
15:59sure there's similarities in your family
16:00as you can probably tell we're how many
16:02minutes into this episode and I've been
16:03talking non-stop for 16 minutes could
16:05you guess that I come from a family of
16:07people who
16:09talk right I come from a family of very
16:12verbal people also a family at least on
16:14one side of very musical
16:17people but within that there's also so
16:20much difference in my family I'm The
16:22Quiet One I'm The Listener in my family
16:25you get me together in a room with my
16:27immediate family and I'm doing less
16:28talking than all they are doing which is
16:31I think I hope what at least early on
16:33made me into a very good interviewer
16:34because I would be willing to really
16:35just listen to people talk for a long
16:37time because I was so used to it now
16:39sometimes I get the complaints on my
16:41podcast interviews that I talk too much
16:43because I treat it like uh this is I
16:44don't know the Joe Rogan podcast or
16:45something was like a conversation where
16:47I'm not just interviewing people having
16:48a conversation with them because I'm
16:50bringing people in front of my audience
16:52and giving them my perspective as well
16:54instead of just being a
16:57conduit but I digress inside of a family
17:01although there are a lot of ways in
17:02which you're
17:03alike you kind of often have the brainy
17:06one or the Mischief one or The Quiet One
17:07like people play different roles inside
17:09a family and although each one of those
17:12family members may seem like they have a
17:13lot in common when you compare them to
17:15the outside world within that family
17:17circuit they can't all play the same
17:20role dad and mom and brother and sister
17:22and big brother and little brother and
17:24big sister and baby sister don't all
17:26play the same role in the family
17:29and kindness recognizing that we're like
17:32one another and that we're supposed to
17:34treat each other like we're like one
17:36another allows us to recognize that we
17:39also have differences from one another
17:40and those differences are welcome so
17:42sometimes when we feel Envy we can feel
17:45appreciation where you actually don't
17:47want to close the gap between you and
17:48someone else you want to take advantage
17:50of the gap between you and someone else
17:53someone else has a ton of gear they you
17:56know have a great Studio you you don't
17:59well they have something you don't but
18:01you probably also have something that
18:03they don't and how can you trade with
18:04them when you see someone that has
18:06something that you don't can you think
18:08of the things that you have that they
18:10don't and how can you make trades with
18:13people these are ways of being kind
18:16instead of envious I've harped on pride
18:18and envy
18:20because I think that the two biggest
18:22killers in our
18:24field but all the rest of these are
18:27funny ones too and important ones and
18:30lust is the next one that we're going to
18:32get into are we going to get super dirty
18:34on this one when I go into lust where
18:36are we going to go with this one uh this
18:38is interesting we're going to look at
18:39lust from a couple different angles but
18:41before I do isn't this a weird spot to

22:14pretty darn big all right uh ultimate

22:44let's get into our next one
22:47lust man I'm going to take this from a
22:51side angle we're not going to just go at
22:54it from the perspective of the sexual
22:56side of lust and we will talk about that
22:59briefly because I think that can be an
23:01issue in music and music production too
23:03how we we'll touch on it but real quick
23:06before we even get into that I want to
23:07talk a little bit about what I thought
23:09was one of the most corrosive forces in
23:12music production in the studio world
23:14when I was getting in to this stuff and
23:17something that I was a little bit
23:18addicted to a shamed to admit that I was
23:20addicted to yes it's true I would go to
23:22the computer and hope my girlfriend
23:25wasn't looking because I would be
23:26pulling up
23:28gear
23:29 the website once known as gear
23:32 has since been renamed gearspace
23:35in the post me too era but it was for a
23:38long time known as gear and there
23:41would be uh I would say predominantly
23:44men hunched over their laptops like in a
23:46dark room um in my case literally hoping
23:49my girlfriend wasn't looking at how much
23:51time I was spending on gear
23:53 reading comments sometimes getting
23:56infuriated sometimes getting envious
23:58sometimes getting prideful it really
23:59brings out all of these things doesn't
24:03it but I've heard it said that lust and
24:05the conventional sense of lusting of the
24:08flesh right sexual
24:10lust that you you're lusting when you're
24:14treating a person like an object when
24:17you're treating a
24:19person like a means to your ends that's
24:24lust and I wonder if it can also work
24:27the other way with gear because with
24:30gear it's almost like
24:33treating
24:35object with the reverence respect due to
24:39a human being and that's what would
24:41happen on gear slots it would be
24:43treating
24:44Gear with the reverence and respect due
24:47to a human being elevating gear to the
24:51status
24:52of talent experience taste and always is
24:57looking for a Magic Bullet of what am I
25:00doing wrong what's the piece of gear
25:02that I don't have and it would always
25:03come down to things like preamps what's
25:05the preamp that I don't have that's
25:07separating my records from sounding like
25:11actually good
25:13records and it is so weird such a weird
25:15environment in gear because you'd
25:17be getting these responses from people
25:18some of whom would be legit audio
25:21engineers and music producers with some
25:23real abilities there was some of those
25:24who would comment and there was a lot of
25:26Engineers and producers without much
25:28experience who would comment just as uh
25:31forcefully and just as
25:33confidently and perhaps pridefully and
25:36there would also be just like a whole
25:37lot of people who literally is their job
25:39to sell gear or drum up lust for
25:43gear commenting on what gear was the
25:45best and why this preamp was going to
25:47change everything about your sounds
25:50forever and I would be surprised if of
25:53those three categories like number three
25:56is like the most vocal part of the group
25:58like oh I'm actually a yeah I make
26:00records you know I I work in the studio
26:02and I'm also like the US distributor for
26:06Brand X that we're talking about right
26:08now but I'm just an an anonymous name
26:11here you know so this is not me um
26:15trying to get wrathful or envious about
26:17gear so L perhaps I could uh fall
26:19into either or both of those deadly sins
26:21I'm going to fall into all of these sins
26:23by the way after after we're done
26:24talking about these like I'm not
26:25completely immune to them I try to
26:27recognize them and sidestep them when I
26:29can but they come up they're habits of
26:31mind that um hopefully we can do less
26:33and less frequently but we only do that
26:35by not being prideful and acknowledging
26:37that they're going to come up so that's
26:39the one big one in the studio world I
26:42want you to watch out for is the lust
26:44for gear the gear lust there's a a
26:48reason they named it gear this was
26:50not an accident I mean it might not have
26:52been methodical they might have gone
26:54through a whole bunch of names and were
26:55like oo gear that one feels right
26:58because it feels oh so wrong so we've
27:01all lusted after gear we've all
27:05attributed to it the powers and respect
27:09due
27:09to experience due to Bringing other
27:13talented people and because this is the
27:14thing that would bug me people who are
27:16like I just need to get a better preamp
27:18and then you would hear the recordings
27:19and it's like no you need to start
27:21working with better musicians or you
27:22need to become a better musician or you
27:24need to make better EQ choices has
27:26nothing to do with your preamps
27:28like your Kick Drum is way louder than
27:31your bass in a song where the kick drum
27:34isn't playing an interesting pattern of
27:35the bases like have you thought about
27:36that
27:41yet that said the actual lust of the
27:46flesh also is potentially an issue in
27:48the music
27:51world musicians often are people who are
27:54high in creativity and people who are
27:56high in creativity are often often high
27:58in a personality trait called openness
28:01man would you ever want to see this
28:03there's another thing we could talk
28:05about habits of mind the five big
28:07personality traits that become more and
28:08more popular in recent years uh they've
28:10been popularized by some extremely
28:12famous person um who you've probably
28:14heard of but um there's good science
28:17behind them and but one of the the the
28:19personality traits openness this idea of
28:21being open to new experiences open to
28:22aesthetic experiences open to new ideas
28:25creative people sometimes at open
28:28also shows its face in intimate
28:30relationships between people and I have
28:34met and I've heard the story of artists
28:37where one of the reasons they got
28:39involved in music was because they
28:41thought it would help their prospects
28:43with the opposite
28:45sex and realistically it's mostly men
28:48getting into music for that reason
28:53um I've heard it said that what what
28:55lust is to men attention is to to women
28:58so sometimes women are less getting into
29:00music hoping to expand their dating
29:02opportunities but men are generally
29:04getting to music at least some part of
29:07them they think it'll help expand their
29:09dating opportunities and there's some
29:11potential truth to that and that can
29:13potentially be a positive thing hey I'm
29:15not like a jock but this is one area
29:16where I can show off like that I have
29:19some usefulness some light inside of me
29:22you know something to share with the
29:23rest of the world that's
29:25awesome but wanting to go specifically
29:28into music so that you can be part of
29:32this NeverEnding Carousel of
29:35relationship after relationship after
29:36relationship after relationship that
29:38last like several hours I don't think
29:41it's generally healthy it's generally
29:43not a healthy way to live but also I
29:45don't think you can keep up making great
29:47music for a long time when that's the
29:49goal like if anything that you're doing
29:51with your music reminds you of a VH1
29:54Behind the Music special from the 1990s
29:56about a band that was really big and had
29:58two big songs and then they all became
30:00alcoholics that went bankrupt if there's
30:02like any part of their lifestyle that
30:04like you're chasing or trying to do you
30:06probably shouldn't do that
30:10thing so I would say we'll get to this
30:12later when it comes to Greed but I would
30:18say the best reason to do
30:20music is because you love the puzzle of
30:23doing music and you feel like it's the
30:26place where you can contri contribute
30:27the most to the world and to others
30:29rather than specific things you can get
30:31out of it we'll talk about that more in
30:32a minute the next one after this which
30:35dovetails nicely into lust is gluttony
30:38we're on our fourth deadly sin here let
30:41me see pride Envy lust gluttony yeah and
30:46gluttony is an interesting one we often
30:48think
30:49about
30:51gluttony as being eating too
30:54much but there's more than one meaning
30:56to gluttony and one
30:58way that gluttony can come up is just
31:02stuffing our faces right eating way too
31:05much when we should already be done
31:06eating but that's not the only way that
31:09gluttony comes up and how does this make
31:11sense in music production why eating too
31:13much have to do with music production it
31:15doesn't
31:16directly but it dovetails into this idea
31:19of lust because one of the other
31:20meanings of
31:22gluttony
31:24is being too interest
31:29in the physical experience of eating
31:32like being too obsessed about getting
31:34the best or the the most this dovetails
31:38into this gear lust thing because it is
31:41possible for you to be a glutton by
31:44obsessing over quality and what I I
31:47found that very interesting I was
31:48reading all these different perspectives
31:50over about the seven deadly sins over
31:52the course of you know 1500 years or
31:53whatever they've been around slightly
31:54more than that and going back even fur
31:57further if you look at the seven deadly
31:59sins coming out of some of the virtue
32:00ethics of ancient Greece and all that
32:02stuff but gluttony it sometimes comes up
32:04this idea that you're obsessing too much
32:07about the quality of your
32:10experience and this dub tailes into the
32:12gear because sometimes when we're
32:15obsessing about the minutia between two
32:17different preamps between two different
32:18types of eqs between two different
32:20compressor
32:21settings that we're going down this
32:23Rabbit Hole debating about quality of
32:26experience when we've already gone far
32:29down that rabbit hole enough and I think
32:32gluttony is one of these ones where it's
32:34more of a matter of degree than an
32:39onoff right with pride and with envy and
32:42with lust it's kind of more of an
32:44onoff but with gluttony it's like how do
32:48you know you've passed that spot into
32:50gluttony it can be trickier for people
32:52I'll tell you what with food for me
32:56specifically when
32:58I don't have goals for how much I'm
33:00supposed to eat I will eat until I feel
33:03full and then a little bit
33:05more people who have more trouble with
33:07food than me will go to the point where
33:09they've eaten more than they need to and
33:12then keep on going and this is the big
33:15thing with gluttony you already know
33:17that you've done enough but you keep on
33:20going
33:21anyway and I
33:24think this is something that rears its
33:26head when it comes to gear when it comes
33:29to obsessing about little tweaks that
33:32we're doing inside of a mix when it
33:34comes to adding more and more
33:36instruments onto a mix and making these
33:38bloated Arrangements where they're not
33:41adding things to the song anymore in
33:42fact we're taking away from the song by
33:44adding additional fat that keeps the
33:47song from really expressing its true
33:50Spirit when we don't know when to
33:54stop or we've reached the point where we
33:57kind of know that we should stop but we
33:58keep on going anyway and the only answer
34:01I have to you for gluttony in music
34:05production is to give yourself a
34:08framework because I don't want you
34:11spending three weeks on mixing one song
34:14or sometimes three months or in the case
34:16of some of us it's probably been three
34:17years right this one song that we don't
34:19get done or we can spend hours twiddling
34:22with a kick drum EQ rather than making
34:24the song Better Or we can add element
34:26after ele element after element these
34:28things are
34:29gluttoning the idea of comparing
34:32microphones trying to find which is the
34:33best one for the singer great wonderful
34:36you should do that but should you be
34:39trying all 15 microphones in the studio
34:41when the singer there with you should we
34:43be obsessing about our compressor
34:44settings and exactly which compressor to
34:46use on this instrument whether we should
34:47boost by a half a DB or a full DB of EQ
34:50on this instrument for
34:52hours and the only way I know out of
34:55this trap of gluttony is to come up with
34:59Frameworks when I want to lose weight I
35:02tend to fluctuate somewhere between 150
35:04pounds and 160 pounds sometimes when I
35:06want to compete in Jiu-Jitsu to lower
35:07weight class I'll go all the way down to
35:09145 and I'll start to look like Skeletor
35:11you can find a a couple podcast episodes
35:13where I look a little bit like Skeletor
35:14because of it but when I want to lose
35:16weight the way that I have to do it is I
35:18have to track calories I have to look at
35:20what I'm eating if I want to be sure
35:23that I'm going to end up losing weight I
35:27can't just wing it and I think the same
35:30thing comes true if you want to stop
35:33wasting too much time on little bits of
35:35minutia and if you want to mix more
35:39quickly if you want to stop adding to
35:42your
35:43Productions once they're already great
35:46you have to give yourself limitations
35:48and framework so here's a couple of
35:50examples if you're going to try out
35:51multiple mics on a singer you try out
35:53three you take your three best guesses
35:56but why what if like mic number seven in
35:59the closet would have been the best on
36:00this
36:02singer you know what it doesn't
36:05matter the best of your three best
36:08guesses is good or good
36:10enough the best of your three best
36:12guesses is good
36:14enough you don't need to do better than
36:18that to make the best production that
36:20you're capable of
36:23making now sometimes can you go a little
36:26further than that you can say wow we're
36:27trying to get the this today in the
36:29studio we have endless time today's the
36:31day where we're just going to try out
36:32all the the mics on this thing we're not
36:34even going to care about getting okay
36:36great if you've created an even bigger
36:39framework of we're not trying to get
36:41this project done over the next two days
36:42or the next two weeks we're trying to
36:44get this project done over the next two
36:45or three months and we can afford a day
36:47where we try out every microphone in the
36:48studio and we twiddle a lot great if
36:51that's part of the larger framework of
36:52we're taking two months to make this
36:54album we can have a mic singer day
36:57where we try out
37:00everything but that only works within
37:03that framework otherwise it can turn
37:04into Chinese Democracy the
37:08uh Guns and Roses album which I think
37:10actually came out at the joke was that
37:12you know Chinese Democracy would China
37:15would have democracy before the album
37:16came out I think that did that end up
37:17being true I don't
37:20know I guess they kind of always voted
37:22the whole time but you're just were
37:24supposed to vote for the person who was
37:25going to win or else you'd be
37:27trouble I don't know if it's different
37:29now or not feel free to tell me in the
37:32comments all right I digress again
37:34hopefully you like these digressions
37:35maybe I should give myself a framework
37:37about too many digressions in my podcast
37:40episodes but the biggest Frameworks I
37:42have for you on the mixing side if
37:44that's what's messing you up and it's
37:46taking you days upon days to finish
37:48mixes or weeks upon weeks or months upon
37:49months is the course mixing
37:51breakthroughs but one of the biggest
37:53things I can give you is just to have
37:55this habit of mind that you have a
37:56specific amount of time in which you
37:58complete a mix of this type a lot of the
38:01best mixers on the planet finish their
38:04mixes in 4 hours or 8
38:08hours now that said they'll have
38:10assistance to help them out usually the
38:12assistants will do a whole bunch of
38:14pre-loading work that you're probably
38:16doing for yourself already that might
38:18take like a whole day of all this work
38:20that you do and it might take you days
38:22to do all of this prep work cuz you
38:23start doing the prep work when you've
38:25already started mixing and you have't
38:26separate them out into two processes one
38:28where I'm just doing prep and now I can
38:30spend an hour or two just doing prep and
38:32now it's set up beautifully so now when
38:33I come back fresh state of mind I'm
38:36ready to actually mix now it's going to
38:37take me my 4 hours or my eight hours and
38:39you have a framework a process a
38:41predetermined process for how to do that
38:43and you put these Frameworks in in place
38:46you know if you go past your framework
38:49you're probably going to feel a little
38:50bit guilty about it and say I'm going
38:51too far and you're probably not going to
38:53go all the way into
38:55gluttony so same thing with me with
38:58actual food right if I'm tracking my
38:59calories and I'm supposed to eat no more
39:01than 2300 calories today you know if I
39:05go over to 2500 I'm like oh damn I kind
39:07of cheated a little bit and I'm a little
39:08bit over but I didn't eat
39:113500 which is what gluttony looks like
39:13and which is what gluttony looks like
39:15when we
39:18let our inability to put constraints on
39:24how far we go with something get the
39:26better of
39:29us another thing about
39:32gluttony we're going to go on to Greed
39:33in a second but another quick thing
39:36about gluttony before we
39:37do is that the opposite of gluttony is
39:40temperance and that's doing the right
39:41things and the right
39:44amounts so gluttony can also be not
39:47doing only too much of something but
39:50sometimes doing too little of the right
39:52things can be akin to gluttony sounds a
39:55little weird and backwards
39:56but if it truly is the reverse of
39:58temperance that would be
39:59true all right greed and this one
40:03dovetails into gluttony because greed is
40:05not knowing when to
40:08stop but not just applying to food
40:12that's a big thing about greed avarice
40:14the idea of being after material
40:16possessions Mammon they called it in the
40:18old
40:20days being obsessed with attaining the
40:22Finer Things in life being obsessed with
40:25material gain
40:28now most of us realistically aren't in
40:32music because we think it's going to
40:35make us millionaire billionaire caj
40:37billionaires we probably don't think
40:39most of us that we're going to get
40:41insanely wealthy off of making music
40:42although if you do things right I mean I
40:45make a good multiple six figure income
40:47just doing music and audio stuff I've
40:49never done one of those episodes that
40:51some people do is like do you want like
40:52people in the personal finance would be
40:54like space on YouTube would like here's
40:56exactly how much I made this month and
40:58every month I could do that um I don't
41:01want to do that I've never have done it
41:03I think it' be a little weird in our
41:04space and but let's just say that if I
41:07did it the reason I wouldn't do it is
41:10because I'd be embarrassed that I was
41:12showing off like I've done okay through
41:14audio and music stuff a nice house
41:17decent net worth good annual income all
41:19that stuff although it took many years
41:21to build to that place wasn't always
41:24that way
41:27but greed would be not knowing when to
41:29stop with that and keeping on chasing
41:33material benefits to the detriment of
41:36other areas of life well this is
41:37something we don't have to worry about
41:38with music production and audio right
41:41not
41:42exactly because the way that I would
41:44frame
41:45greed in a broader way where it's not
41:48just having to do with having the most
41:51richest and the nicest car and all that
41:52stuff which I don't have and I don't
41:54aspire to have
41:58greed is to me valuing the
42:01outcome over the
42:04journey that's what greed really means
42:07is obsessing about the material outcomes
42:11of what you've
42:13done rather than the value of the
42:15journey to get there so for instance I
42:18have a a gold record plaque here on the
42:20wall behind me I have a platinum credit
42:22now should be getting platinum record
42:24next to that one too really excited that
42:26was going to cross that threshold in the
42:29year that just passed of 2023 we'll have
42:31my first platinum record on the wall
42:32shortly so excited about that the reason
42:34I point these things out though is not
42:37because like I'm super proud to have the
42:39thing or
42:41even that like I want to rest on my L
42:44and be like oh I I got see I did good
42:46the only reason I like to have those
42:48things and show them off is because
42:51they're a credibility Builder because
42:53they allow me to do more of the thing
42:55that I like
42:56doing and if I have some credibility in
42:59the eyes of my audience people will come
43:02to me so that I can help them learn more
43:05if I have more credibility in the eyes
43:07of my potential mastering clients more
43:09people will be like Justin can you work
43:11on my next
43:12record and I don't want to work on my
43:14next record so I can get the next
43:16platinum record or I can add another
43:18Wing to the house I want to work on the
43:20next record so that I can work on the
43:22next
43:23record I want to get the next coaching
43:26call with a
43:27client where I can help them learn how
43:29to mix better because I want to do the
43:32next coaching call with the next client
43:34where I get to help them learn to mix
43:36better and I swear scouts honor I'm not
43:39just saying this to be a Boy
43:42Scout whenever I'm I'm at my
43:45best I
43:48legitimately want all the the trappings
43:51of credibility and the trappings of
43:53success so I get more opportunities to
43:56do the thing that led to
44:00them I don't
44:03need you know multiple six figures of
44:05income or multiple Gold Records or
44:07multiple platinum records just because I
44:08want
44:09them although I do want those things
44:13because they allow me to keep on doing
44:14the thing that I like
44:16doing and if that's the way that you can
44:18approach music and audio production not
44:21being obsessed with the outcome for the
44:22outcome's sake but being somewhat
44:25interested in the outcome because it
44:27facilitates you keeping on doing the
44:30things that you know that you want to be
44:32doing and should be doing and that are
44:33legitimately fulfilling for you to
44:38do I mean I think that's where where
44:40real real success comes from is
44:42designing a day-to-day life for
44:45yourself that you enjoy living and that
44:48feels meaningful and usually most of
44:51that meaning that you get out of life is
44:53going to
44:54become is going to come from as cheesy
44:57as it sounds it's going to come from
44:59helping others it's going to come from
45:01being a meaningful part in someone
45:03else's meaning and all of us doing that
45:05for each other at all
45:08times I get way too sentimental in
45:11goodie two shoes if I go down the rabbit
45:12hole on that so let's talk about some
45:14more dark excuse me I don't usually
45:15curs in the podcast I apologize got to
45:17put a disclaimer on this one I said a
45:19four-letter word all right I guess I am
45:21a Boy Scout the next one is
45:24sloth
45:26and sloth is not doing what you should
45:29when you
45:30should and this is a problem for me
45:32sometimes I seem to the outside world
45:35sometimes I seem productive there was a
45:37time where I was writing like eight
45:39articles a month for different
45:40Publications and I was doing you know a
45:42video a week on top of that and I was
45:44working in the studio and I was doing
45:45all this
45:47stuff and people would say to me like
45:49Justin how come you seem to be able to
45:52do all this stuff you seem so busy all
45:54the time and I'd be like like no I'm
45:57like afraid I'm not busy enough like I'm
45:58not doing I feel like I'm never doing
46:01anything I feel like I've never
46:02accomplished anything and that's why I'm
46:04doing all the stuff or at least it
46:05appears to other people but I wouldn't
46:06even recognize I was actually achieving
46:08and doing a lot of stuff I would just
46:09notice the times where I was feeling the
46:12feeling of sloth of I should be doing
46:13something but I'm not now what I'm
46:16describing can go pathological in the
46:18wrong direction right you can be so
46:20obsessed with constantly doing things
46:22that you have no peace but you can also
46:26be on the opposite side of it sloth and
46:28sloth is really associated with
46:32sadness with not doing the things that
46:35you should be doing and that you
46:37actually want to be
46:39doing and the biggest thing in sloth is
46:44fear sloth can look like procrastination
46:47procrastination is our modern word for
46:49sloth
46:50right we used to use ugly words for ugly
46:53things and now we use prettier words for
46:55the same ugly things so we don't feel
46:56quite as bad about them I'm just
46:59procrastinating feels a lot better than
47:01being oh I'm being slothful
47:04today imagine if you said that oh you
47:06get that project done oh I'm
47:07procrastinating a bit before I do it you
47:09get that project done yet no I'm being
47:12slothful imagine if we talk like that
47:15probably stop being slothful or
47:16procrastinating more
47:20quickly but the biggest thing with
47:22procrastination which is a problem for
47:23me I'm a huge procrastin
47:28but the reason procrastination works is
47:31because the reason that we are slothful
47:33is that we are afraid of doing the thing
47:35that we know we should be doing we're
47:36afraid of doing the thing that we know
47:38we want to be doing so we don't do it
47:40out of fear because we're afraid of what
47:43will happen if we try what will happen
47:45if we try and it's not good enough what
47:47will happen if we try and we don't
47:49succeed what will happen if we really do
47:51the things that you're supposed to do to
47:54get a big Following on Spotify or you
47:57know get a blow up on Tik Tok or YouTube
48:00or to finish your album or you know to
48:03open up for a big band whatever your
48:05goals are to land more
48:09clients if we actually try to do the
48:11things we're supposed to do to get there
48:14and then we didn't achieve them oh my
48:16goodness we'd feel so much worse right
48:18than if we hadn't tried at all because
48:20at least when we're not trying at all we
48:21can say well it's not my personal
48:22failing I just didn't
48:24try that's Pride effing with us again
48:28right you know I probably could have
48:30done it if I tried but I didn't try
48:33so good thing for
48:37that the only thing that has worked for
48:39me and tell me if you have a better
48:40answer to this because I hope that there
48:41is a better
48:43answer but maybe this is the best we've
48:46got the answer to being too
48:50afraid to do something for me has always
48:53been being too afraid to not to do
48:56it and that's where the Tipping Point
48:59you felt this in your own life you know
49:00it this where the Tipping Point in
49:01procrastination comes where you actually
49:02do the thing that you should have been
49:03doing the whole time is when you start
49:06being more
49:07afraid of the negatives that will ACW to
49:10you by not doing the thing than by doing
49:12it and
49:14failing and that's one of the reason
49:16I've switched to doing this in a live
49:18streaming format because it helps me
49:21with my procrastination and my sloth I'm
49:24like I got to be there at a certain time
49:25I've said I'll be there and I've got to
49:28be ready at that time otherwise I'm
49:30going to have an audience that goes like
49:32where's that guy he doesn't show up
49:34anymore or is he not doing this anymore
49:35I guess I'll go somewhere else for my
49:40fix and I did the same thing with
49:42deadlines back when I wrote articles um
49:44when I was starting to write articles I
49:46gave myself deadlines and I was never a
49:47good person to being on time or getting
49:50things done on on deadlines but I was
49:53like if I have a deadline and I'm more
49:55embarrassed about not meeting the
49:57deadline then I am about how bad the
49:59article comes out then I will get it
50:01done and by getting it done again and
50:04again and again and again that's how I
50:06will get good and that's how it works
50:09that is how it
50:10works be more afraid of not doing the
50:12thing than you are afraid of doing the
50:14thing and you have to figure out
50:15whatever it is whatever it takes to make
50:17you feel that way in school for me it
50:18was like I never really ever did
50:20homework in school but I would turn in
50:22just enough of like the big assignments
50:24that you're supposed to turn in that I
50:26would get like a c or a d right I here's
50:29how annoying I I would get like A's and
50:31A+ on test without studying because I'm
50:33annoying and I would be
50:36like I already know this stuff I don't
50:38have to do any homework I don't really
50:39care about what grades I get I don't
50:41want to go to college anyway I just want
50:42to
50:44rock but then I would get Fs if I didn't
50:47turn in anything so I'd have to turn
50:48like one or two big final products uh
50:50projects and I was so afraid of like
50:52totally failing and not at least getting
50:54a c or like a d or something that I
50:55would finally turn the thing in and I'm
50:57not saying this is the healthiest way to
51:01live but whatever modest success I have
51:03in my life apparently has come from uh
51:05that ability to be more afraid of not
51:07doing the thing than of doing the
51:10thing man I should psychoanalyze myself
51:12further in the show because this is an
51:13area where I could get way way way way
51:17better all right and then the last one
51:21here is wrath anger and I didn't know
51:24how to work this one into a podcast on
51:27music and audio
51:30production um is anger holding us back I
51:34really see the Envy the the the anger
51:36that comes from Envy being something
51:38that holds us
51:40back the anger from that comes from
51:43lusting after something that we don't
51:44have and not wanting others to have it
51:46that kind of
51:49anger but maybe this is a blind spot for
51:53me because I will admit
51:56MIT that sometimes some of My Success
52:00has come from being
52:02angry sometimes when I do episodes like
52:04this where it's the slap in the face
52:06that we all need RJ Enriquez writes into
52:08the chat right now this episode has been
52:09the best slap in the face I've gotten
52:11and needed lately LOL some of my best
52:13episodes at least my favorite ones to do
52:15and sometimes my most popular ones are I
52:17get angry I go into rant mode right go
52:19to rant mode about um s excessively High
52:23sample rates and how they don't what
52:25people think that they do
52:28provably and me being angry at gear
52:31slots is one of the reasons I became an
52:33audio journalist person to begin with
52:35and started writing about and
52:36interviewing and trying to find the
52:38scientific answers to and finding the
52:40best practices from all the greatest
52:42producers and Engineers one of the
52:43reasons I did that I was so angry that
52:45gear was like like that was our
52:47primary mode of communication in the
52:49music production space for a number of
52:51years and it was the exact moment where
52:53the whole industry was like imploding in
52:55on itself and I'm like how's this doing
52:58for us how is this treating us there's
53:00got to be something better what's out
53:01there sucks and I can do better and
53:03you've got to have a little bit of that
53:04in you to be a musician you have to have
53:07there's like this tiny bit of Pride
53:08right and this tiny bit of anger we like
53:10wait they're successful I could do that
53:12why them Why Not Me In fact I have
53:15something even better to offer and it is
53:18U it is a disgrace and a dishonor and an
53:21injustice that it's not me and I'm not
53:24just going to whine it I'm not just
53:26going to be envious I'm not just going
53:27to be prideful I'm going to get angry
53:29and I'm going to do
53:31something that can be a powerful thing
53:34to move you
53:35forward it can
53:38be but I don't think that can power you
53:42forever like it's the kind of Rocket
53:45Fuel that yes can help the spaceship you
53:48know maybe burst out of the
53:51atmosphere but you can't keep burning
53:53like that your whole life cuz it's not
53:54going to take you all the way to
53:56Mars how's this analogy going made it up
53:58on the spot H
54:03HH I remember talking to uh the great
54:06Cameron whose last name I don't know of
54:08Venus Theory I think his middle name is
54:10Venus and his last name is Theory Mr
54:12Theory Cameron de's Theory we had a
54:14great uh podcast interview episode with
54:17him and he was talking about anger being
54:19a motivating factor in what he does
54:22creatively and I was like oh man I could
54:24so relate to that
54:26when I was starting to really get into
54:28the business of communicating about
54:30audio and music production I was like
54:31there are things unsaid that need to be
54:33said there are things that people are
54:34saying wrong there things that people
54:36have wrong there are priorities that are
54:37misplaced I've got to go out there and
54:39do something about it and i''d be angry
54:42about it doing an episode like this it's
54:44about being angry at all the ways that I
54:46have failed and I want to see you not
54:48fail and that anger of like ah how much
54:51I've had some modest success by some
54:53people's standards not as much as some
54:54people have as much as maybe I could and
54:56I want to see you do better and I'm
54:58angry about it but you see how it starts
54:59to mix together all of a sudden it's not
55:01just about anger at a certain point like
55:05you've got to be
55:06angry out of
55:09love and I think that a modest amount of
55:11anger can be
55:14fuel that anger that comes out of love
55:17like I just wish that people understood
55:19this better and the fact that they don't
55:21and the fact that there's people
55:22misleading them makes me annoyed
55:27that kind of
55:28anger that's fueled by
55:31Love Like Love what is love actually
55:34wanting the good for another willing the
55:38good of the other I've heard it put
55:39that's what love is love isn't a squishy
55:41feeling in your heart it's willing the
55:44good of the other it's a beautiful
55:45conception of what love is if you have a
55:48little bit of that that's driving your
55:50anger and that the anger comes from a
55:52place of love then it can be used
55:55useful but this is another one where I
55:57think it's important to
55:59recognize what the opposite of the sin
56:02is what is the virtue that is supposed
56:06to be the opposite of Wrath and the
56:08tradition that this comes from what is
56:10the virtue opposite of Wrath any
56:15guesses it's
56:18patience
56:20wow that was that was another cool one I
56:22read that oh the opposite of Wrath is
56:25patience and so often when we're angry
56:28when we're angry with others when we're
56:30angry with
56:32ourselves it's because we're things
56:34aren't happening on the timetable that
56:36we
56:36wanted in the way that we wanted we want
56:39to be done a certain way a certain time
56:42we want to be done our
56:45way and when you start getting there
56:47when you start getting really wound up
56:49if you can get to instead that point of
56:53patience
56:57that is the antidote to
56:58wrath and some of these things in
57:02here wrath greed lust Envy sometimes
57:06even Pride I've been talking about how
57:08they can keep us back from
57:10success but another thing can happen
57:12that's even
57:15darker which is that even obviously the
57:18successful have these traits and
57:19sometimes for some people who succeed at
57:21what they wanted to succeed
57:23at they were fueled by some of these
57:27sins or probably better understood
57:30they're not actions these negative
57:32habits of
57:33mind and if you get all the way to
57:35success because you're fueled primarily
57:38by any of these seven Pride Envy lust
57:41gluttony greed sloth wrath and you get
57:45to what you thought was going to be the
57:46promised land fueled by one of these you
57:48might find out it's not the promised
57:50land after
57:53all
57:56so that's a caution if Envy is a
57:58motivator for you and wrath is a
57:59motivator for you if greed is a
58:02motivator for you and they actually help
58:03you
58:05succeed
58:07beware and I think that comes back to
58:09the idea of greed valuing the outcome
58:14over the journey start valuing the
58:16journey over the
58:18outcome and also of Pride really feeling
58:21like you
58:23know
58:25where you should wind up and that you
58:27are the one with the master plan don't
58:29get me wrong you should make plans but
58:33that's a whole another episode I've
