00:00it's been 18 years since one of my
00:02all-time favorite pedal companies called
00:05it quits and today I'm gonna walk you
00:07through some of the history and I'm
00:09gonna play every single pedal they made
00:11so that at the end of this episode you
00:13can help me keep the amazing legend of
00:29in 1995 two guys from England decide to
00:33start a pedal company they cease
00:35production of their pedals in 2001 so in
00:39six short years they had a theme and I
00:41think that thing changed the pedal
00:43industry for good I need you to place
00:46yourself back in 1995 for a second and
00:48as you watch me play these pedals in a
00:50moment I need you to think about what a
00:52pedal was and what they had been what
00:55you're gonna see is something radically
00:57different let's talk first about how you
00:59even bought a pedal well you went to a
01:01store and bought a pedal or you ordered
01:04it through the mail that's a radical
01:06change from today where we just get on
01:08Google check things out and it's at our
01:10doorstep next day or two days later that
01:13just wasn't an option then which means
01:15even when these are being made they were
01:18incredibly rare and in my opinion the
01:21truest form of Boutique now let's talk
01:23about them sonically and visually there
01:26was nothing like this basically love
01:29tone took everything normal sane and
01:31comfortable and threw it out the window
01:34and forever changed the game you can see
01:36traces of love tone all through the
01:39petals of the modern age that we live in
01:41now you can see people allowed to do
01:44things out of the box people don't feel
01:46weird about making a crazy pedal anymore
01:48because love tone kind of kicked that
01:51door down it's almost like the Beatles
01:54musicians saw them and realized hey we
01:56can do that too well love tone did that
01:59for guys like me and all of my friends
02:01you make pedals so without further ado
02:04let's look at them I'm going to show you
02:06the box as you don't see a lot of those
02:08floating around and if you're a
02:09collector it's really cool also I'll
02:12open it up you can see how they packaged
02:14it but basically you got a big cardboard
02:16mailer like this you got the address
02:18phone number and all that stuff and then
02:20on the backside they use the same stamp
02:23and they would simply check what model
02:25it was so this is a Wagyu later
02:26I know someone's gonna call that phone
02:29number it doesn't work trust me so you
02:32open it up and you got this kind of
02:35arrangement so the pedals like down in
02:41there's your pedal another thing are
02:44these cool postcards so this black pedal
02:48board here there are a few people that
02:50actually have this board I believe John
02:52Mayer told me he has the whole display
02:54in it so that's probably pretty rare on
02:58the back side it says the love tone
03:00pedal board a legend in its own
03:02lunchtime and then it says which is
03:05really great has a little sticker on it
03:06only while stocks last last thing to
03:10show you are a few of the manuals
03:12because in today 2018 these just fill
03:16absurd but they're basically just
03:19stapled sheets of paper I'll show you a
03:21couple of my favorite I mean look at the
03:23meatball because these pedals are so
03:25ridiculously like tweakable I can't
03:29imagine writing these manuals out I
03:31write my manuals on a card like this big
03:33you know I don't need any space but look
03:39you'd get these kind of start guides
03:42here okay I have a lot to go through
03:48here I'm just gonna go for it and it's
03:50all in no particular order I'm going to
03:53start with the doppelganger
03:55so the doppelganger is a phaser vibrato
03:58that has two LFOs meaning you can do
04:01some pretty crazy stuff because you can
04:03put those against each other
04:04you have expression pedal inputs you
04:07have a host of knobs you have wave form
04:10you switch between phaser vibrato here
04:13turn it on and off and then you can
04:15choose between one or the two of those
04:51next up I'll do the big cheese this is
04:54hands-down the most known and you may
04:56have actually seen this one it's on a
04:59lot of famous records a lot of players
05:01used it everyone from Radiohead to Jeff
05:03Tweedy at Wilco pavement you too it's a
05:08fuzz pedal it's fairly simple operation
05:10but the sounds are really really awesome
05:13and versatile you have a Kurds knob hog
05:15and B knob you can choose your type of
05:18cheese little click switch and then you
05:21have a way control it's pretty amazing
05:25maybe my favorite just because it's so
05:27accessible and usable I actually have
05:31this is a blackout version of it that
05:33what I heard I talked to Dan and I
05:36believe he said there were two of these
05:38ever made for a dealer in England got
05:41ahold of this guy doesn't get much more
06:19the next one is the meatball this is
06:23also really well-known not as well-known
06:26but if you're a bass player
06:28this probably pops up in your search for
06:31fun effects and actually I think Kurt
06:35Hemet used this on a random intro of a
06:37Metallica song it's really versatile but
06:39what we have here is an envelope trigger
06:41envelope follower filter so kind of an
06:44auto wah thing but it does so much more
06:47and does some really fantastic sounds
06:49there's too many controls to even go
06:51over but I'll play it for you but I mean
06:53it's extensive and it's nuts what all
06:56this pulls off you've got effects loops
06:58as well where you can put other effects
07:00into it so they're triggered into the
07:02envelope expression pedals and so on
07:26now the modulator Bob you later is a
07:31dual LFO tremolo stereo pan of echt and
07:36that's a mouthful but it really just
07:39does so many great things in the trim
07:41category and because you can choose so
07:43many different wave forms shapes depths
07:47put the LFOs against each other it does
07:50so much more sonically than when you
07:52just think of a tremolo you could really
07:54create some amazing effects of this as
07:58usual you've got all kinds of inputs and
08:01outputs you've got click switches you
08:03can enable the left and right in your
08:05pan and there's even LFO triggers and
08:08stuff I mean it's pretty pretty amazing
08:09I also came across a custom color of it
08:12I don't really know the story but this
08:15is it so take a look
09:04next is the brown source this is the
09:08most normal kind of simplified petal
09:10you'll ever see from love tone it's an
09:12overdrive pedal and it has Drive high
09:15and low like a tone control and then a
09:16tone click switch and a volume control
09:19so I think Browns source is playing on
09:22the term Brown sound as in Marshall
09:24overdrive and it does that really well
09:26but in my opinion this is just a really
09:29unique open airy uncompressed overdrive
09:32that I think is fairly unique from a
09:34circuit design standpoint and just easy
09:37use so I find this these are actually
09:40pretty affordable when you find them
09:41popping up so this might be a good
09:43gateway into maybe owning a lip tone
10:01this next one is one of the craziest
10:04ones and it's one that's really hard to
10:06find and a lot of people search high and
10:08low for it because of all that it does
10:10it's called the ring stinger and
10:13basically this is a ring modulator
10:16simple analog synthesizer and an octave
10:20fuzz I know that sounds crazy but that's
10:22just what it is you have VCO inputs you
10:26have LFO depth pedal you can do carrier
10:29in VCO out so you can chain this in two
10:32things you have different LFO selections
10:35here you can turn on the octave or
10:39ringing different waveforms it's just
10:42kind of nuts and they did put a blend in
10:44there plus it's pink you know I'm a fan
10:48of pink so this is maybe the
10:50best-looking one you been
11:37next is the flange with no name
11:40sometimes it's just called question mark
11:43you know kind of like Prince was a
11:45symbol I don't know something like that
11:47but it's a stereo flanger but more than
11:50that it's a stereo modulation device and
11:53I think that's even how they marketed it
11:54because it does a crazy amount of chorus
11:58vibrato flange type sounds it's also a
12:02simple synthesizer you can set it up to
12:04do rhythmic percussive synth things as
12:07well and just kind of nutso sound you
12:11can just make sounds of this that I've
12:12never heard any other pedal do you got a
12:14ton of settings you got a ton of
12:16switches as usual you do have an effects
12:19loop you have a trigger for the gate you
12:21have a CV in for a pedal ya mono or
13:25last but not least is the first one I
13:29it is the cheese source the cheese
13:32source is simply this it's the big
13:35cheese and the brown source buzz and
13:38overdrive two and one and I don't really
13:42need to explain anything else that's
14:05got to show you something how they open
14:07most puddles have a back plate these
14:10have a hinge look at that I think it's
14:15I mean if nothing else I'm just showing
14:17myself this for when I watch this later
14:19maybe someone thinks it's cool I don't
14:25today's record sign was brought to you

14:34one day probably four or five six years
14:37ago I walked into the shop and this was
14:40blaring from the moment I heard it it
14:42blew my mind because it felt like Paul
14:45McCartney had this love child with
14:47Steely Dan and Queen and Jimi Hendrix it
14:50was really really amazing at first
14:52listen and then I really started
14:55noticing the recording techniques the
14:57way the drums are tracked and the vocals
14:59the guitar is the way it's mixed and
15:01mastered it's just a really really
15:04amazing album because it throws back to
15:07classic rock without feeling weird or
15:10like feeling like it's copying something
15:12it does it in a really original way so I
15:15really encourage you to go check this
15:17out Zeus busting visions and in the
15:19comments I would like for you to leave

15:24throws back two classics without being
15:27obnoxious something that still feels
15:30fresh are relevant but they're obviously
15:31using those tones and techniques from
15:34the days gone by so put that in the
