00:00on today's episode we're gonna look at a
00:02really strange line of pedals that korg
00:04released sometime in the 1990s
00:06there's not a lot of information but
00:08what i do know i'm gonna share
00:10i can't make promises but i can make
00:12guarantees let's roll the intro
00:26in 1999 line 6 appears on the pedal
00:29scene with a brand new stompbox called
00:31the dl4 delay effect modeler
00:33this entire series changed how guitar
00:37at digital pedals forever up until this
00:40a lot of companies had tried to use
00:42brand new processors and dsp
00:45innovation to get digital processing
00:48sounds to feel and act like analog
00:51it's very very difficult and there were
00:53some pretty good attempts we have things
00:55like boss with the me series we have dod
00:58and digitech with things like the fx7
01:02and we have zoom which was a heavy
01:04hitter in the early dsp
01:05era with things like the 505. this is
01:08actually my first pedal ever
01:09and it still has some pretty good sounds
01:12another company that contributed to this
01:14initial trail blazing of early dsp
01:18was korg and they released sometime in
01:22a tone work series now here's the
01:24problem i usually like to offer you tons
01:28but there's nothing there's no
01:29information on these nobody knows
01:32they're super mysterious and i'm going
01:34to do the best i can
01:35to lead you on a journey of
01:37understanding this period of time and
01:40this series now they don't have a name
01:42so i'm just going to name them the
01:45spirit animal series
01:52because they have these weird animals
01:53we'll get into that later and
01:55i have a manual this manual is in
01:59and as you can tell i am not japanese
02:01i'm gonna turn to page four
02:03and there's one hint that's very useful
02:05in the investigation
02:07of trying to figure the series out now
02:09as a pedal detected what i'm sharing
02:12is very valuable but it's completely
02:13free on today's episode we have
02:15a section here called ce mark of
02:18european harmonized standards
02:20it's a very nerdy term for this is the
02:24and approval to use certain components
02:26in these pedals and it says
02:28ce mark which is attached to our
02:32ac mains operated apparatus until
02:35here's the cliffhanger december 31st
02:40that means korg had approval
02:43to make products with components that
02:46they were using here
02:47until december 31st of 96. that means
02:50these pedals came before that
02:52i don't actually know anything past that
02:54but i know they're kind of weird they're
02:57they have funky animal things on them
02:59and i'm going to start with
03:01the tonework spirit animal series
03:05105 od classic overdrive you'll notice
03:08it has a spider on it
03:10um is it is it an ant
03:14does it have four legs uh it's four legs
03:18it's a spider ant overdrive by korg
03:20spirit animal series
03:22it has a boost function and it has a
03:25aliasing harmonic that's slightly
03:27irritating as the note decays
03:30but just like certain family members are
03:33it's kind of endearing
04:09next up of the four petals is number two
04:13spirit animal series
04:20multi effects now that's actually the
04:24um now this pedal out of everything i
04:27in this room thousands of pedals it wins
04:31complicated user interface i've ever
04:35it's so confusing that i'm about to demo
04:38it and i'm just gonna play and let nick
04:40try to figure it out i gave up
04:42maybe this switch changes these numbers
04:44the switch down here correspond
04:47i don't know there's presets users then
04:50i okay so there's priest
04:51there's a preset what's the bank i don't
04:53know what user means but there's a
04:55there's just letters d t c m a l and
04:58that stands for drive tone contour
05:01and then nr level there's an off knob
05:04but the not there's stuff that makes no
05:08this is confusing but uh it has a lot of
05:12and and uh the spirit animal of multi
05:16is apparently like a jackal
05:19like a jackal ant eater like a it's like
05:23said a jackal kit so this is the spirit
05:30jackal cat 411 effects
05:34that's what this is i promise you
06:23number three in this four part series is
06:28the 301 dl dynamic echo i have the box
06:33there's a price tag on the box 179.99
06:37now when you're investigating a pedal
06:39line you want to know
06:41how well did it do what year is it from
06:43what little tidbits can you
06:45find from the artifacts of history and
06:50price tag on a pedal from the 90s is
06:52probably your evidence
06:54and proof of why it did not last long
06:58and why people didn't like it that's
06:59really crazy expensive
07:01but i had this pedal a long time ago
07:03they're pretty cheap on reverb i know
07:05people are already complaining the price
07:06is going up not my problem but
07:08you have this 301 deal dynamic echo
07:12and it has what seems to be a lizard
07:14frog on it i'm not sure i'm going to say
07:17it's a lizard does it look like a
07:18lizard nick yeah like a newt a newt frog
07:23this is the tone works spirit animal

07:30dynamic echo now what's cool about this
07:34old primitive digital rack mount delays
07:37now those are super cool a lot of the
07:40albums a lot of stuff that brian eno
07:43all these amazing records i've always
07:45loved use really low five digital delays
07:48and this does it really well you have
07:50one row of knobs four knobs
07:52and you flip the switch here and those
07:54knobs change to different settings it's
07:57it's the first time i had ever seen
08:00ducking on a delay which means
08:02you turn the ducking control up and when
08:04you're playing the delay is faded into
08:06really useful and really cool so

08:18i don't know where we're at with this
08:19name does that sound good
08:21yeah all right let's play
09:05last in this series is the
09:08toneworks spirit animal series 104 ds
09:12hyper distortion with cabinet resonator
09:16cr i don't know what any of that means i
09:18also notice in the manual it says
09:20guitar hyper performance product so
09:24this distortion is pretty accurately
09:27defined as a hyper performance product i
09:30we all know what those are they're all
09:31over the place you can buy hyper
09:34razors drinks this is a hyper
09:36performance distortion pedal
09:38and the spirit animal is definitely an
09:41i think it's an eagle like a hawk eagle
09:45uh what do you think nick i think it's
09:46like a crane eagle like a crane eagle so
09:50spirit crane eagle hyper distortion
09:54i don't have a lot to say about this
09:58it it knows nothing of subtlety
10:02it is on it is definitely on
10:05and it has it has a gate that's always
10:09i don't i like this pedal don't take
10:12what i'm about to say wrong but i hate
10:14gates and distortion pedals because
10:16especially when you can't turn
10:18them off i can't turn this gate off it's
10:19like when you two forced their album
10:22they forced gate into my tone and that
10:24rhymed and that's amazing
10:26i just i don't like the gate i'm playing
10:29a floyd rose and i can't drop deity
10:32scared to death of that it's a mess it's
10:34a mess i'm gonna try a riff
10:36it has a cab simulator i'm never gonna

12:57and cool they don't necessarily do the
13:00things that you would expect them to do
13:02but they have some fantastic creative
13:05sound so if you're a session player if
13:06you're someone looking for something
