00:51 embrace me Filipino I mean I was I was
00:55 always like kind of sure of myself
00:56 pretty confident but there were all of
00:58 those always those moments where I felt
01:00 like okay I'm too Filipino for the black
01:02 kids I'm too black for the Filipino kids
01:04 that got all these different
01:06 perspectives of life and I kind of
01:08 formed my own and there's a bunch of
01:10 women who need somebody to look up to
01:12 that is not a certain mold you know that
01:15 that believes that there is no mold for
01:17 what a woman should be or what it artist
01:19 should be or what a black woman should
01:20 be or a black artist should be what was
01:22 your experience like you know growing up
01:24 in the Bay of them I love the very I
01:27 love run from the authenticity of it and
01:29 there's a sense of community there so I
01:31 always felt like I had a good foundation
01:32 a good support system what music was
01:35 playing in the house oh my gosh
01:36 everything a lot of old school my mom
01:39 loves Bally's Filipinos love ballads and
01:41 love Whitney Houston they love Mariah
01:43 Carey you know they love Alicia Keys I
01:45 feel like I did feel something from
01:48 Whitney singing I was inspired to sing
01:51 because of a Whitney you know and I was
01:53 inspired to perform a certain way
01:55 because she paved the way my dad he
01:59 listened to a lot of Prince he was
02:00 everything he was rocked he was blues he
02:02 was pop he was Barbie
02:04 there's just magic to me I feel like
02:06 we'd let in this food go to waste get
02:08 along in we could definitely just
02:11 like eat and talk I think he says

03:21 special occasions like holidays just

03:36 sometimes and it felt okay
03:39 there's another chain but there's
03:40 something else that we've been missing
03:42 what was the inspiration for that one
03:44 you know it was crazy with Kobe's
03:47 passing and on the day of the grand
03:49 means how fitting the message was you
03:51 can't always plan you know life you just
03:55 got to be positive and and just just go
03:59 sometimes and that's what the song is
04:00 about is just like it's really hard but
04:04 I know I have to trust when we come off
04:05 from the piano pull out the guitar you
04:08 put your leg up and just start going and
04:11 shredding on the guitar it really made
04:14 me think about the young black girls and
04:16 boys that you may inspire that may not
04:18 know Prince but may know her and may
04:21 know that Grammy moment the influence
04:23 that you might have when a young
04:24 generation is out of the donut
04:25 I was just making what was honest to me
04:27 you know I just knew what I loved I
04:29 released my my project to volume one in
04:32 2016 and people started to say like wow
04:36 she's speaking my life you know
04:38 oh I've felt this before and I'm and I
04:40 first was like surprised like oh really
04:42 eventually it was just like wow okay I
04:45 am a voice for young women or fur for
04:47 anybody who's felt this way it's still
04:49 kind of surreal and it's I still have
04:51 those moments of like wow you know what
04:54 other artists did for me I'm doing for
04:56 people and to be a young black woman who
04:59 is able to unleash that power and to be
05:03 able to impact other young black women
05:05 especially to pick up a guitar I just
05:08 feel grateful and blessed you know to be
05:10 that kind of influence what type of
05:12 audience you attract when you're out
05:13 there oh my gosh can I tell you a story
05:15 it's very mixed I just did this festival
05:19 there's two days and on the first day it
05:21 was a lot more black artists right and I
05:23 was I was on the second day and at first
05:26 I was kind of like I was an I on the day
05:29 and with like the more army folks I did
05:31 the show and I was like wait a minute
05:33 these people know the words to my songs
05:35 and they love my music at that moment I
05:37 realize I put myself in that box like
05:39 why did you think that you were not
05:42 prepared for this second day when my
05:45 goal was to be a prince who appeals to
05:47 everybody and it was one of the best
05:49 shows I ever had just mix it up yeah
05:59 okay I want to go into the birth of her
06:02 it's sitting here with you like you're
06:04 an open book with your feelings and your
06:06 emotions and especially in your music so
06:08 the acronym of having everything
06:09 revealed I think on the surface it was
06:11 mysterious but you just open up what was
06:15 that thought that made you wanna maybe
06:17 pull the veil I remember when I was
06:20 making all this music having a hard time
06:22 like being honest and everybody in my
06:25 life kind of see me as this little girl
06:27 prodigy you know the little girl right
06:30 and always feeling like I had to you
06:33 know live up to a certain expectation
06:35 it's hard to be honest it's like are
06:38 people gonna like the music first of all
06:39 and are they going to accept the message
06:42 I didn't want anybody to know how old I
06:45 was or you know what I look like I
06:49 wanted to get back to music being the
06:51 forefront and when I released Volume one
06:54 I said okay I want the cover to be just
06:58 the silhouette and that's all you get
07:00 and then I did it and everybody was like
07:02 who is this who is she I think it's so
07:04 and so that was the idea of just the
07:06 birth of making music the forefront and
07:09 people paying attention to that focusing
07:19 I've been this it is all me you know you
07:28 talk about being scared initially and
07:30 having this fear of being honest mm-hmm
07:31 have those fears been alleviated do you
07:34 feel like you can be more honest in your
07:37 I feel like I have a responsibility to
07:39 be at this point because so many women
07:42 have came to me and said you made me
07:44 comfortable within myself just as black
07:47 artists get put in a box swim and get
07:49 put in a box to be a certain way to look
07:52 a certain way especially artists we did
07:56 that you it's delicious
07:58 ah it's not a peanut butter finish
08:01 product I can't wait to eat this just
08:05 gonna cut it it's delicious the best
08:08 everything yes it wouldn't be a Filipino

08:42 outside of music the Bay Area is the
08:45 birthplace of the Black Panther movement
08:47 how did that influence you it's kind of
08:49 crazy to think about like thinking that
08:52 that was the center of it all people
08:54 from the bay just naturally have this
08:56 confidence about themselves and that's
08:58 really what you know the Black Panther
08:59 movement was about it was about like
09:01 being black and being proud be a leader
09:04 understand what's going on and change it
09:06 do something about it that's the
09:07 influence I had on me as far as just
09:09 being proud and confident in Who I am
09:10 and that I knew anywhere I went I could
09:13 be myself I feel like every prize that
09:17 you peel back a layer we learn a little
09:18 something more about you yeah and even
09:20 sonically you explore different things
09:22 again opening up that box of what we're
09:25 talking about right you know it's not
09:27 just our B it's fog its soul if you
09:32 could kind of describe the evolution of
09:33 your discography yeah it's her that was
09:35 the perfect explanation right thank you
09:38 it's really just been evolution of self
09:42 like it's been illusion of me and who I
09:44 am who I'm becoming as a woman I think
09:46 you really hear that in the music this
09:48 upcoming project is definitely going to
09:50 be reminiscent of the first two projects
09:53 sonically but elevated because it's
09:55 gonna be much more musical it's going to
09:57 be opened up so you know finally once
10:00 about legacy someone was a Google search
10:03 you insane yes what do you hope to find
10:06 man I mean so much has happened in the
10:09 last two years I don't even know what by
10:12 that point what's going to be found like
10:15 to be honest with you before I released
10:17 Volume one I created a vision board and
10:19 I pretty much covered majority of the
10:23 things on that vision board at the end
10:25 of the day all those big accomplishments
10:28 little people around the world can say
10:31 oh my gosh this song changed my life
10:33 this song helped me get through this I
10:34 don't think I've even fulfilled my full
10:37 purpose I'm here to do multiple things
10:39 and I've only just begun I'm only 22
10:42 years old so you know sky's the limit
10:45 Grammy award-winning 22 year old her
10:50 related and and winner yes and I got to
10:53 ten nominations in two years so who
10:56 knows what's gonna happen you know it's
10:58 just about impact it's about just being
11:01 myself and not being afraid of living up
11:03 to any expectation but my own and
11:06 telling any other artists or any woman
11:09 black woman whoever that that's the only
11:13 expectation you have to live up to is
