00:26your heart and soul down and then you

00:33right there beside them you're figuring
00:34out every single detail you're in it you
00:35get lost it and then you come out the
00:36other side and it sounds like this yeah
00:38I feel like I just so lucky to have the
00:41amount of fun I did this time yeah and
00:43it was really cool to hear that and I
00:44could tell when we spoke virtually the
00:45other day when we played Risk um that
00:48you had had a lot of fun and I was
00:49really really encouraged to see that
00:51because I know that you've been
00:52searching for a place to be able to
00:55write with a broad spectrum of of
00:58emotional resonance for a while and the
01:01last Al felt like you had did some stuff
01:02to work through still I hope I'll always
01:05feel like I'm chasing the next kind of
01:09best version or whatever I actually need
01:11for myself any given time with each
01:13album that I'm lucky enough to make but
01:15this one just was this just matched
01:18where I'm at in such a real way as did
01:20good riddance at the time but this I
01:22just I feel like I'm in a different
01:23place and I know that probably next year
01:25I'll look back and be like oh what was I
01:26talking about but even the human being
01:27that's sitting in front of me is
01:28different to the person who came in talk
01:30to me during good riddance I feel like
01:31you were still trying to figure out what
01:32you wanted to say about that record
01:34because it was very close and it felt
01:36very near to you and I and we had a
01:38great conversation about it but you know
01:40you there's a different light around you
01:42this time around a thanks oh I've got a
01:44sound effect for that what that's what
01:48was that my voice can you imagine if we
01:49just turned it around that quick holy
01:51 that actually just scared wait will
01:52you play it one more time
01:58a can you imagine the future is coming

02:02do it it would be you pretty soon you'll
02:04be able to say something I'll just have
02:05it on my board and I'll repeat it back

02:07echo nightmare so this beautiful album
02:10um The Secret of us we got some stuff to
02:12talk about um what I like about it is
02:14that I don't feel compelled having
02:15listened to it multiple times now to um
02:18walk a line between um how personal we
02:21get with some of the subject matter or
02:22not which I always try to do really
02:23thoughtfully cuz I feel like there's
02:25some character work going on here and
02:26some fun stuff going on here and it's
02:28like you've opened up the doors away
02:29from your own experience and allowed
02:30yourself to see through other people's
02:32eyes wow I is that fair yeah I think all
02:36of the songs are based in seeds of Truth
02:39yeah from my life and experiences and
02:43relationships and from I would say the
02:46Audrey's who's Audrey Hobert who I wrote
02:49many of the songs with my bestie and um
02:52and also you know friends of ours and
02:55but what was so much fun constantly
03:00with all of these songs was that so I
03:02think like we'd take the seed and then
03:04be like well what if it's the most
03:06dramatic version of this feeling yeah WR
03:09it yeah just to a point of embarrassment
03:12often um yeah that's what I love about
03:15risk that's what I talked about like
03:16that's why I got overwhelmed when I was
03:17playing the song in front of you and I
03:18was just like I'm going to take it too
03:20soon to tell you it's is brilliant it's
03:22that that that that historical reaction
03:25to emotion is part of the human
03:27experience and we often curb it when
03:29we're in the art because we're like I
03:30don't want to show that side of myself
03:32like I need to be play cool or I need to
03:33find a different way in how for people
03:35who are looking forward to doing that
03:38now that you've had the courage to do it
03:40how like rewarding and freeing was it
03:43just to let that side of the Human
03:45Experience fly and not curb it that's
03:47what made it
03:48fun I think it
03:51was exploring it fully and and um I also
03:56think it was it just helped me
04:00across the board like be that expressive
04:03about about those feelings and it's like
04:05it's just Universal I think when you're
04:07in your head about um someone new which
04:11is the subject matter of a a lot of
04:13these songs yeah um and exp if you're
04:16like
04:17remotely an anxious leaning human I feel
04:20like you kind of in your head work
04:21through every possible outcome of a
04:23situation or a relationship before you
04:25even y have the information to do so
04:27properly well that's where anxiety lives
04:29and the unknown of the future or the uh
04:31impossible to change elements of your
04:34past right that should be in the
04:36dictionary that's what it is it's like
04:39you can't do either anything either side
04:40of it and so the present becomes an
04:42untenable situation and I think rather
04:45than not talking about it with people
04:47which I've done before this was the
04:50opposite where like you know I live with
04:51my best friend now between chunks of
04:54tour we'd come home and just like
04:56download yeah hardcore and and to have
04:59someone who was also 24 being like no
05:02totally was really you
05:04know useful that's a really important
05:07Point um as someone who's spoken to a
05:09lot of artists at a point in their life
05:13not unsimilar to yourself where it's
05:15like things are happening but you're
05:16still young but you're observing things
05:19through with a maturity that comes from
05:22um the acceleration of expression
05:23through the Arts so it's like most 24
05:26year olds who don't make music may not
05:27be thinking the way you're thinking
05:28because they're not being forced cuz
05:30you're like I'm trying to get to a place
05:32even ahead of myself through my music
05:33I'm trying to see things that I feel
05:35that other people might not come around
05:37to till much later that's how I've
05:38always kind of seen the kind of for lack
05:40of a bit of term and this is a
05:42compliment the precocious side of being
05:44an artist is like I know it's in there
05:46I'm going to look for it now and not in
05:47four years 5 years time I don't always
05:50know that it's in there for like person
05:52I think I
05:54I often when I'm in the middle of
05:56writing something I don't necessarily
05:58believe in it immediately and that was
06:00another one of the benefits of having
06:01such a close partner in making most of
06:05these songs and then making all of them
06:07with Aron you know cut you off at the
06:09first guess before you get to the second
06:10guessing yeah like just kind of a seal
06:13of approval of you know that there's
06:16it's worth exploring you know but
06:19um man I don't know I'm a little bit
06:21nervous right now to be talking about
06:22the album just to say it yeah just to
06:25say it but it's also okay this this is a
06:27really cool thing I'm really
06:28appreciative of this cuz had a few
06:30people coming in on the um as new music
06:33is coming out who have expressed a sense
06:36of kind of a healthy sense of anxiety
06:38about this particular process it's never
06:40really it's always been an unspoken
06:42thing in conversations I think because I
06:44feel it it's not like I sit here and be
06:46like okay item number 305 Gracie Abrams
06:49The Secret of us next interview like I
06:51take this really seriously and I
06:53listen to the music and I really try to
06:54feel it so I know what kind of vibe I'm
06:57trying to create in the room so I feel
06:58it too I think it's really cool people
07:00are acknowledging it just to say in case
07:02I'm like you know sweating in a visible
07:05way I know we're sitting like 5et apart
07:06but you might still see it I didn't want
07:07to say anything but a little I know
07:09touch up tou up tou up I'm just kidding
07:11I'm just kidding what I was no what I
07:13was going to say before was not at all
07:14what I was going to say before was that
07:16it's an important point to make that
07:17you've surrounded yourself with someone
07:18your own age who's going through what
07:19you're going through because so much
07:20about being an artist in this industry
07:22when you start to get build
07:23infrastructure teams great or otherwise
07:25around you is that everyone comes in to
07:27tell you or try to help you or or
07:29influence you on what's best with more
07:31years how many artists have been told
07:33man you know I just I've got this like
07:35I've seen this before isn't it great to
07:38be able to go home to someone and see
07:39things for the first time together yeah
07:41and it's I a million percent and it's
07:44one of the things I appreciated so much
07:46about working with her because she
07:48hadn't written music before we started
07:49doing these songs and there's people
07:52have asked me what it's like and she's
07:54so good she's so good but it's like
07:56there because there's a kind of pure
08:00approach to just trying to express the
08:02thing we both know is there why not yeah
08:04why not oh why not and also I think
08:05that's why I keep that's what kept it
08:07fun and I keep saying that word and I
08:08need to use slightly different but just
08:13because often times the lyrics that we
08:15ended up keeping were the ones that made
08:20us like smile not where we're like
08:22undermining the feeling but where it's
08:25just like oh that's actually that is the
08:27core of it like felt good about until I
08:30didn't like that is a funny line thanks
08:33it is and it starts the album in a
08:35really meaningful way because then you
08:37explain it and you give it a criteria as
08:39to why this feeling exists but it's a
08:43hell of a way to start the album it's
08:44the kind of thing that you say to
08:45somebody on the way out the door as they
08:47go as either you're leaving or they're
08:49leaving and it's like your your your
08:50parting gesture to another disappointing
08:53scenario is well I felt good about you
08:55until I didn't I know we should put it
08:57on the back of a shirt it's really good
08:59cuz
09:00yeah no you should have felt good about
09:01you on the front until I didn't on the
09:03back you get 50% of all it's okay you
09:06can keep all revenue I'm doing fine in
09:08my life ideas are ideas are free and the
09:11day we stopped pretending they weren't
09:12free we up we really up
09:15ideas are free um no I can I can
09:18definitely get a sense of the of the fun
09:21side of the honesty that goes into this
09:23and often honesty in songwriting is kind
09:25of attributed to pain and tough and
09:28Trauma and honest thank you for being so
09:30honest how many times have I say that I
09:31meant it every time thank you for being
09:32so honest thank you for being honest and
09:34being fun about it and being playful
09:36with it as well it just helps you
09:40swallow embarrassment disappointment um
09:44and it's also really important to go
09:46through that you know those
09:48relationships where you're like Oh I
09:49thought this was going to be something
09:50else and I think I've also like what I
09:52also learned about myself through this
09:54album is I just do so much projecting
09:58all the time time and I think it's maybe
10:01why I'm I'm even I feel nervous around
10:04talking about the album with you uh
10:08because I I don't you know I change my
10:10mind a lot right and I think this album
10:12is a lot of changing my mind and a lot
10:14of kind of like defending my um pride in
10:19the face of someone
10:23who I'm like drawn to and wanting to not
10:26be embarrassed and wanting to like look
10:27cool but not knowing how to do it and
10:29this album is kind of like the inner
10:32tornado um I guess when you're trying to
10:35present away and then it just doesn't
10:37actually really ultimately work damn
10:40Gracie you just summed it up I had to
10:42Dro a bomb on that just to embarrass you
10:45even further you know I don't drop him
10:47unless it's truth it's a truth bomb
10:49button okay I like that no it's amazing
10:51what you just said because you just
10:52summed up the um innate and instinctive
10:55thrash of indecision that ultimately we
10:57live in every second of every day we
10:58just done a presence of mind to
11:00acknowledge it like I'm hungry not
11:02really hungry I really I like you but
11:04equally you kind of piss me off but then
11:05I know I'm annoying to be around EXA
11:07know it's just like that actually what
11:08you just said is yes right but you're
11:11just doing it in such a kind of Rapid
11:13pace and the songs have they do have a
11:15really and again compliment they have a
11:17frantic energy to them in terms of the
11:19performance and the writing and and you
11:21know what Aaron does so beautifully is
11:23he builds calm around that so that in
11:26itself to listen to is a really cool
11:28contradiction oh thank you you know like
11:30excellent obv it's a really safe place
11:32you know um up in wherever the he
11:34is in the middle of nowhere in the
11:36sticks up up and up and up and up um for
11:39you just to sort of let it all happen so
11:42when you started writing songs long
11:44before this album
11:46existed and you knew you had a voice
11:48that you wanted to explore and things
11:50you wanted to say through music
11:53um was it an embarrassing experience for
11:56you did it take a lot for you to climb
11:58over that that sense of how how do I
12:00show and tell this I just wasn't showing
12:02it like when I started writing songs it
12:04was just an extension of journaling
12:05which I would never show anyone you know
12:08um and I think the the thing that I I
12:13guess at the time yes I was just it
12:15wasn't it was Private um and when I
12:18started doing anything online it was
12:21easy both because I grew up with the
12:24internet so that was just always there
12:26and I didn't have to face yeah people so
12:28it didn't
12:29feel didn't feel like I was
12:32confronting um real reactions or
12:35criticism or I feel like your generation
12:37was probably one of if not the first
12:39generation to be able to draw a line
12:41between the internet being real and kind
12:43of something else in a weird way I'm
12:46like I feel like now I I'm in I'm just
12:49on it less in general so I I'm relieved
12:52to be in a place where that's true but I
12:54I think I totally believed it at the
12:57time to really be like you know as
12:59tangible as everything else here is yeah
13:02but then it the thing that I love now
13:05and what I feel so grateful to to have
13:08realized is that I think the the most
13:10important thing with songwriting and
13:12it's what I really we wanted to do with
13:14this album is just if you can articulate
13:17a feeling and you can just put it
13:20somewhere you know for someone else who
13:23isn't you to connect with that is makes
13:25it all feel magic yeah it just does and
13:28and I I think I think that that was why
13:33we tried to make this F or it just came
13:36out in a way that was purely fun and I
13:39was imagining the tour the whole time we
13:40were writing because I just think the
13:43exchange of
13:46um or I guess acknowledging like we're
13:48all we've all felt this way because in
13:50the in the moment it's so shitty sort of
13:53to be like I don't know how this person
13:55feels about me I don't know and and then
13:57also to have a even bigger picture view
13:58of like well also who even cares this is
14:01a small problem in the grand scheme of
14:03problems but if we thought like that no
14:05odd gets made I know I think that's
14:07that's probably right but um that's
14:09where my brain goes anyway so I think I
14:11think I just feel like an overwhelming
14:13sense of gratitude to have had such a
14:15good time making something that I hope
14:19um allows other people who are feeling
14:22these feelings to you know sing or
14:25scream about it with their friends
14:27rather than box themselves in and uh you
14:30know shy away from like
14:33how strange it can all be well it's
14:36going to get stranger because you're
14:37going to see that every night on tour
14:39and I mean you've written a collection
14:41of songs here that really do
14:45um they are asking for the community to
14:49partake in them these are not the inner
14:51workings of an artist trying to find
14:53themselves entirely this is a outward
14:55expression of joy and confusion to
14:59audience to say if you feel it let me
15:01yeah totally give it back you're going
15:03to get that I mean I feel that this
15:05feels like I mean it's it's it's almost
15:06your EDM record oh my God should I start
15:10saying
15:11that tell everyone it's so strange I
15:14love it but it is it's like your
15:16community experience record in a lot of
15:18ways at least the first one yeah I I I
15:21think so I mean it was like you know I
15:23again had a partner in the room with me
15:26we were just singing the lyrics together
15:28and that just felt good like versus
15:30every other project I've made is like in
15:33the quietest corner of the smallest room
15:35alone you know what I mean like a trying
15:36to really self-isolate this was
15:38different and it feels like who I am
15:41today so it's a relief yeah so you kind
15:44of summed up who us was at the beginning
15:46in terms of like if you want to talk
15:47about it from a songwriting palette and
15:49here are the colors the colors are a
15:50little you know some of me some of you
15:52know Audrey right Audrey some of my
15:54friends that's the US whatever but I
15:56think the US might be you and Audrey
15:57isn't that the secret of us kind of the
15:59two of you just kind of coming together
16:00and laying it all out on the table I
16:02think there's like a plethora of uses
16:05that are wrapped in which is what makes
16:06it fun for me um but yes I mean yeah
16:09it's a diversionary tactic you've
16:10created the ultimate songwriting
16:11diversionary tactic I'm like so let's
16:13talk about song number seven and you're
16:15like well it's just one of the uses
16:16exactly just one of the many US no but
16:18it's true I mean this is totally a it's
16:20an amalgamation of lots of different
16:22things but yes I think I mean we've
16:24already talked about it but yes she and
16:26I are deeply deeply close and doing this
16:29together you know the environment that
16:30you're making this record in pretty well
16:32now I mean you know this is not your
16:33first time working with Aaron um you
16:35guys have cut your teeth together to
16:36figure out what works for the two of you
16:37makes it unique because every producer
16:39has a unique approach um so how did you
16:41push each other on this record where
16:42were the learnings for the two of you on
16:44on secret of us he was so encouraging
16:47that I co-produce with him and that
16:53was just his kind of selflessness first
16:57of all or like lack of ego I guess is
16:59what it is is like something that I
17:02admire so deeply because um I think what
17:06he has always encouraged me to do is
17:10just go deeper and and you know grow
17:13more and more connected to what I've
17:15written you know and and um so you know
17:19he
17:20totally just green lit every idea that I
17:25had um and our our instincts are
17:28different so it was kind of just like
17:29we'd try a ton of different synth sounds
17:32before agreeing on the right one but
17:34like the fact that he was like yes play
17:37Everything touch everything do it all
17:39like get in there change all the levels
17:40and in a way that I don't think everyone
17:42is wildly encouraging of because it's
17:45also like it's his space and yeah but we
17:47know each other so well we're like
17:48family at this point so it was really I
17:50think this album and exploring and and
17:53pushing it further and into a new kind
17:56of Lane I guess for both of us um
18:00it felt natural and also is like a real
18:03gift I'd imagine he doesn't have to work
18:05with anybody unless he's curious about
18:08how they're going to change his
18:09environment and his way of working I
18:11mean I often think if you're a producer
18:13or an engineer and you find yourself in
18:15a space where you've got it so dialed in
18:17that people have got to kind of um
18:19curtail to your to to your vision it
18:21must be regardless how it makes someone
18:23else feel just on personal growth level
18:25redundant what are you learning yeah
18:28totally he's so he's such a curious
18:30person and he he the people that he
18:33works with and the friends that he has
18:35and his family it's like it's such a you
18:39know the range of personalities and um
18:43yeah I want to be like that well you are
18:45and I mean it's the beautiful thing
18:46about continuing to build a creative
18:47relationship with someone like Aaron is
18:49that you learn as you go and the next
18:51thing you know you're doing it with
18:51somebody else and somebody else and so
18:54is that your biggest learning from that
18:55that actually as well as being a
18:57songwriter and a performer
18:59um and somebody who can build an artist
19:01world around themselves that you can now
19:03see a a world like you just said where
19:05you can do that where you can start to
19:07work with artists from that perspective
19:09yeah I mean I I guess working with
19:12Audrey was a is a good example of yeah I
19:16guess working with someone new just
19:18because her energy is so specific and um
19:23different from mine but like in a way we
19:26both trust entirely and so it gave us
19:29the space you know cuz we wrote most of
19:30these songs on our couch at home to yeah
19:34be as kind of outrageous about it as we
19:35want but there is trust there so I think
19:37like it's something I've learned from
19:39Aaron and something I've been really
19:40privileged to experience you know
19:42throughout the course of the past
19:44handful of years that I've been
19:45recording I've always worked with people
19:47who I genuinely love and trust and um so
19:50I'm always yeah that's like it's been
19:52such a privilege that that's been the
19:54Baseline for me because I know that
19:55that's a really rare thing for young
19:57musicians for musicians period you got
19:59you've been you've been and up being
20:01raised by great parents creative parents
20:03and of course you have great parents but
20:05great creative parents totally it you're
20:07right it's incredibly common for artists
20:10to find the wrong parents totally and I
20:12think it's like I I think about it all
20:14the time because I just in different
20:15conversations I have with people
20:17about yeah I guess like safety in the
20:19music industry even um like I know that
20:24the one of the greatest Gifts of my life
20:27is I don't feel like I've been like
20:29personally like burned by anyone that
20:31I've been vulnerable with and it is
20:33already inherently just such a weird
20:36thing to like step into a room and be
20:37like here are my feelings and this is my
20:39heart and soul and I'm you know and the
20:42fact that um I've been lucky enough to
20:45work with people that honor that and
20:48aren't boundary Crossing and that um
20:51it's just so lucky so you know I guess
20:53my hope is to continue
20:56to work with people who want want to
20:58honor that kind of environment I think
21:00it inspires others to make good
21:01decisions I also think luck does play a
21:03part in timing and great music but you
21:05know there's a strength that you whether
21:07you recognize it or not that you do
21:09exude in terms of your vision and what
21:10you want to do that I think um even if
21:12somebody was coming in there to try to
21:14manipulate the scenario for their
21:15benefit might think twice when they meet
21:17you whether you recognize that or not
21:19I've certainly recognized that when I
21:20met you as a young artist I'm like all
21:21Gracie knows what she wants right and so
21:25where now as you mature as an artist do
21:26you see your greatest strength as an
21:28artist do you think or even just as a
21:29person navigating this strange world as
21:31you put it oh that's such a good
21:35question oh man I'm I've a little too
21:39early for deep self analysis no I mean
21:41no I I think um my bad no no no I
21:44honestly I I just I feel right now very
21:48uh surrendered
21:51to um like I I feel like I know
21:54myself enough to um
21:59like be a good
22:01listener and that's something that I've
22:03been like actively working on over the
22:05past couple years but I think that it's
22:08really helped my writing like I think
22:12that as an
22:14artist my that is one of my biggest
22:17strengths right now I hope it is at
22:20least and I hope that the people in my
22:21life feel that way but I'm really like
22:23actively trying to do that I tell you
22:26why that's cool because I benefited from
22:27it myself and I learned it way after
22:28after you m I came into this thinking
22:30that you know I had to fill the dead air
22:32and try to find ways to keep the
22:33conversation moving and add constantly
22:35add add add add and I love to add
22:37because I love having conversations well
22:39you're very good at it obviously I
22:41appreciate that but the truth is is that
22:43my greatest learning curve came when I
22:45realized that actually just if I just
22:48listened to what the talented people in
22:49front of me were saying I'd be fine I
22:52feel like it's so fascinating because I
22:53feel like what I what my
22:57um I think that what I recognize is
23:00feeling different and it's probably
23:02because I'm the one who's experiencing
23:05it up close but I feel like with you
23:09know the people that are generous enough
23:11to listen to the music that I make that
23:14audience and I have a
23:17really sincere
23:20relationship that makes me want
23:24to that makes me want to make things
23:27like it just it it's it's weird keep the
23:29relationship alive yeah like it does
23:31feel like a real exchange to me and and
23:34I think that um you know most of my days
23:37for the past two and a half years have
23:38been on the road touring and so it's
23:41it's it makes sense that it would have
23:42kind of really gone up in terms of my
23:45list of priorities like maintaining that
23:48kind of um it feels really sacred to me
23:50and I think a lot of that has to do with
23:52listening to each other um and I know
23:54that they you know they listen to my
23:55songs but like I really I want to know
23:58them as much as they know me and um it
24:02fuels the kind of music that we make and
24:04you know the tone of this album is very
24:07much uh influenced you know yes by my
24:13feelings and you know Audrey's feelings
24:15and our imagination but also by their
24:20personality um and so yeah trying to
24:23like tune into that as much as
24:25possible all the time what is the
24:28what is the sort of commonality that you
24:31recognize having met now thousands of
24:33people who you have in common that you
24:36make music and you speak with to them
24:38and they speak to you and you share this
24:40kind of common ground of Human
24:41Experience what are some of the traits
24:43that you feel you see on more often than
24:44not well I think there's
24:47just there are formative experiences
24:50that you go through when you're growing
24:51up and we are growing up together me and
24:54them um which which acknowledging that
24:59makes it easier to speak to everything
25:01that we do in this album you know and
25:03it's what makes me excited about being
25:05able to sing it with them is because you
25:07know they write to me about their
25:10relationships every day I like they tell
25:13me to my face when I am lucky enough to
25:15be in the same room as them what they're
25:17going through and like I know it's all
25:19the same and I think it's funny
25:23because I don't know it um maybe maybe
25:26not everyone assumes that it's as un IAL
25:28as it is but I'm just it really is no it
25:31really is and it actually doesn't go
25:32away the weird thing is even though
25:33you're right some of these songs really
25:34do will resonate with with um fans your
25:37AG or young uh the people are falling in
25:39and out of friendships relationships
25:41romantic relationships all the time
25:44they're feeling irrational experiences
25:46internally all the time um as we get
25:50older though I think we just get better
25:51at either ignoring them um banishing
25:54them belittling those feelings those
25:56thoughts like it's like man why not just
25:58live in them for a minute I know I still
26:00do that all the time the belittling of
26:02it or like I find myself and it again it
26:06kind of influenced some of the album
26:08like the laughter around these feelings
26:10which was really useful but I think
26:12sometimes and it's what I'm trying to
26:14catch myself is like laughing in a way
26:16that actually diminishes the feeling or
26:18my experience or makes you know it can
26:21make someone else uncomfortable even if
26:22it's just my own you know me dealing
26:25with discomfort or embarrassment it's
26:27really important I find to just sit with
26:30it and I've been only you know kind of
26:33implementing that post album yeah in the
26:37way that I'm talking about it with
26:38people because the the truth is that I
26:39can be like yeah we had the best time
26:40and like I was laughing the whole time
26:42but I was also like really reeling and
26:44upset often too and a lot of what made
26:49the album
26:51feel a lot of what made me feel better
26:54through the album was yes like sharing
26:57in it and being like haha isn't it funny
26:59if we phrase this feeling like this and
27:01it's all true but I
27:03also it's like I made an album like I
27:07was feeling intensely like I can't even
27:10like put on a front that it wasn't that
27:12I wasn't affected that's why your music
27:13is so effective Gracie to me at least
27:15when I hear it and millions of other
27:17people is the fact that you are never
27:18too far away from self-examination and
27:21taking some some responsibility for the
27:22thing you never too far away from
27:24finding the ludicrous nature of it but
27:26also right at the core of it is a real
27:27emot I take at
27:30Smokey
27:32and tell me iset than she on the
27:34internet that's fny thanks right are
27:37your conversations cool like are you
27:39even interested that's just straight up
27:41 disc talk right then I know what
27:43you are you could have just said that
27:46that's the most cut to the Bone thing
27:48you can say to anybody in a moment of
27:49disagreement or distrust is I know not
27:52who you are I know what you are this
27:55one's Petty yeah up than the
27:58Stars tell me if she takes you far bar
28:00far enough away from all the baggage
28:02you've been carrying up another Hill To
28:03All the Girls who help you bury it
28:05they're just blowing smoke I'll say what
28:07they won't I know everything they don't
28:11like I was in a mood holy you're in
28:13a mood but you got it out and and and
28:15you made a great song out of it but it's
28:17just even in that chorus what's wrapped
28:19up in that is just like I hate you I
28:21hate me I hate her but then I hate me
28:23even more than her but I hate you for
28:25being with her and not me cuz now you
28:27made her life more Miser than mine and
28:29I'm glad to be done with you well it's
28:30so
28:31transparent it's just the thing it's
28:34like great ring thank you what us with
28:36thanks man it's transparent though too I
28:39think like I even in the moment where
28:41when I'm writing it I like wasn't
28:43thinking like well Grazy you know this
28:45is unhinged this is unhinged and also
28:48and but it's also
28:50like I don't know I think there's
28:52something when I feel compelled to write
28:54it's because I'm like bubbling up and
28:57and what feel like it feels like my
29:00veins are
29:02like truly like boiling I don't know how
29:05to like when it it's with blowing smoke
29:07specifically but honestly with all the
29:08songs on this album came from a place of
29:10just almost like I'm
29:12nauseous I'm nauseous if I don't get
29:15this out I could be sick here which is
29:16how I felt when I was little and writing
29:18and I think that's why I have there's so
29:20much joy associated with this album for
29:22me is because it's like seeped in um a
29:26feeling that I remember having when I
29:28was really little and I before I started
29:30putting out music and I was just writing
29:32you know for myself it just felt like
29:35the purest form like and I was writing
29:38in real time with this whole album so it
29:41really was I felt like I was internally
29:45like boiling over I suppose and um
29:49man that's why you hear it everyone's
29:51going to hear it like so exciting I mean
29:52they will have heard it by the time this
29:53conversation goes out people will be
29:55aware of all all of the the nuances and
29:59and the detail and the visceral
30:01experience you're going through that
30:03somehow you got to capture and you got
30:04to put it to music and then when you
30:06perform it you got to recapture it yeah
30:09yeah and figure out how it felt back
30:12then today it's so easy for me to do
30:15with this album when I think about it's
30:17not easy for me to do I'm not saying
30:18it's easy for me to do that no no no did
30:21we get it cut it print it it's already
30:23on the internet in fact I can play it
30:24off the wall here if you want here it is
30:26a there you go
30:29no what I mean is it's easy for me to
30:33with this album REM I remember like
30:36every I remember everything about the
30:40writing process I know it was quite
30:41recent so it's not that impressive but
30:43the way that I felt was I felt crazy
30:46when we were making this like I
30:47constantly felt like I was actually
30:49losing in and I think that like I'm like
30:50haha the character was unwell but I that
30:54character again I think like I think
30:57that I am I'm just desperately excited
31:00to perform it live cuz it is like I
31:02again it's just it's all just incredibly
31:05human feelings to have and I love
31:07leaning into um yeah the drama I guess
31:12there is a song at number five on the
31:15track listing which is a title track of
31:17sorts um you know the album is called
31:19The Secret of us um but the song has
31:22just simply caught us and
31:24and okay if if it was how do I put this
31:27if it was just you an acoustic guitar
31:29thematically I think would beautifully
31:30anchor the entire experience but it's
31:32not it's probably the most produced full
31:37sounding ambitious and realized ambition
31:41experience you've had as an artist in
31:43terms of like leaning into a place where
31:45power's required yeah and then you also
31:48brought your friend along and did it
31:50together which is a beautiful experience
31:52for both you and Taylor because Taylor
31:55chooses her collaborators very carefully
31:57and very thought it's never a trade it's
31:59got to mean something so you know it
32:00means something and I feel like it's one
32:03of those moments just as a fan where I'm
32:05hearing two friends really just sing it
32:09to each other MH not like okay you're up
32:14no no we are we're staring at each other
32:16the entire time and that's my favorite
32:18kind of collaboration CU it's like that
32:2080s it's that David Bo Tina turn
32:22like I don't give a who's watching
32:24us it's just us you know that's we felt
32:27very much
32:28um yeah we were I mean the whole writing
32:32process was like that night can you just
32:34tell the whole story just one I top to
32:36bottom top to bottom okay cuz it's
32:38dramatic we almost burned her house down
32:41literally like actually almost burned
32:43her it was very you can't laugh when
32:45people say that you nearly burned down
32:47Taylor fans will feel some kind of way
32:49about that yeah I'm like oh is that
32:51funny to you haha funny okay this is
32:54what happened we were we went to dinner
32:56and we uh drank a lot of
32:59alcohol and we were talking
33:03about our lives and then we were talking
33:07about our albums and she was in the
33:09middle of torture poets and I was in the
33:10middle of this and um we were just
33:14getting
33:16so like we were just so excited talking
33:21about all of it and she was like we have
33:23to go back to the house and I want to
33:25play you the songs and blah blah blah so
33:27we went like we went back to our house
33:29and we like opened a bottle of wine and
33:32we went song for song in the kitchen and
33:35we were being like theater kids about
33:38like like like but like standing and
33:40like running around the center Island
33:42being like you know about all the songs
33:45and they were um and it was
33:49just it was so funny like we the whole
33:54time I was like this is ridiculous like
33:55this is crazy and this at this point
33:56it's like two
33:58in the morning and
34:00we off the back of playing song for song
34:03for song for song for song for like I
34:05don't know how long we
34:07um were listening
34:10through sketches that Aaron had sent us
34:15and um the guitar part for us the came
34:19on yeah the opening part and immediately
34:22we were both like and so we ran to and
34:25we had no plan to make any you know
34:27whatever but it felt just like a
34:29Nashville writing session like we went
34:31to sat at the piano just like found the
34:33key and then wrote the whole song and at
34:372:00 in the morning at 2 from like 2: to
34:396:00 a.m. and um it's so cra like the
34:44amount of we filmed the whole thing cuz
34:46did not cuz we were like we need to film
34:47this but we just needed to get it all
34:49down whatever and it was so full body
34:51like it again it was like dramatic and
34:54but it was it was so much fun and um and
34:58it was it was like a the exact version
35:01of the way that like Audrey and I wrote
35:02all of the songs at home you know like
35:04after having wine and dinner and
35:06whatever and then you're like I can't
35:08not think about this feeling that I'm
35:09having like let's have a conversation
35:11and it just it the the dinner
35:13conversation ended up in the S do you
35:16know what I'm saying like yeah you're
35:18living an experience and you're emoting
35:20through it and the mute you found a
35:22piece of music at the time which
35:23actually triggered the whole thing
35:26completely again it's just a story right
35:27literally so then we're writing and we
35:30had the bridge is you know like a very
35:33large majority of the song it's like
35:36huge and whatever and we were the head
35:38banging to the piano whatever
35:40and i' heard um like a crack from the
35:44other room I was like what is that what
35:47is that and Taylor was like it's
35:49probably my cat like I think whatever we
35:52finished the bridge and we went into the
35:53kitchen to get probably wine and there
35:56was like a bond fire on her Center
36:00Island like truly like a huge ball of
36:03flame there had been a candle that we
36:06had lit when we got home and it was so
36:09hot that it burst and this the the base
36:12of the candle was this like wooden like
36:14a tree trunk kind of a thing that's a
36:17great
36:19product I'm going to get her a new one
36:21and and it was on fire and we were it
36:24was like you know six in the morning
36:25like what the and I mean when
36:26you're saying
36:28I mean like fire flames like Flames like
36:31it was and and I don't know how she knew
36:33where this was but she runs and grabs a
36:36fire
36:37extinguisher and no and and and for like
36:40and for like minutes is like trying to
36:42get it to work and it won't work and I
36:43was just like like this I'm like Cry
36:45Like Home Video I'm like hey girl but I
36:47had had a similar problem earlier I had
36:49a weirdly like a candle burst and I
36:50learned that if you put water on it
36:51because you buy the same C burst in your
36:54 trying to no no and um anyway
36:58eventually she burned it took it all out
37:00what put it out yeah yeah extinguished
37:02the fire extinguished it and then we
37:04both had like crazy cough like chest
37:07coughs for weeks after because the whole
37:10kitchen was like covered in anyway but
37:13but the US came from that night so that
37:15was a really good night um no one got
37:18her we actually both we did get like
37:20burned from the wax and all that stuff
37:22it was gnarly but it was so funny
37:24there's a lot to unpack here first of
37:25all fire extinguishers why so hard I
37:28mean if you need to use a fire
37:30extinguisher it been that we were drunk
37:32let's just not blame the device first
37:35there's a lot of flicking this and doing
37:37that and unlocking that and figuring
37:39that part out never had to obviously
37:41until now it doesn't sound like you a
37:43much help either you're filming the
37:44whole thing oh my God you are so
37:48genz you got your phone out and filmed
37:50it she's so Millennial she's just like I
37:52got to fix it your like I'm going to
37:54film it Taylor's always like I've got it
37:56no matter what the situation like me
37:59I've got it anyway so us came from
38:02that yeah yeah that is a even better
38:06story than I could have possibly
38:07imagined but you know getting away from
38:09the potential fire hazard and the cough
38:11which we haven't even focused on how
38:12gnarly the cough was that's pretty heavy
38:14and so you would text each other she was
38:15in the middle of tour so she has to like
38:16go out and play she was on she got by
38:18the way she had gotten I think I think
38:20it was from I don't it was South America
38:23I remember but she had landed like truly
38:25like an hour before it went to I don't
38:27know what anyway her capacity for all
38:29things is beyond me for funun for her
38:31capacity for fun yes like I like that we
38:34can say that on the a because everyone
38:36talks a lot about um Taylor's talent and
38:39the way that it equates to success it's
38:41a given you put that much quality and
38:44consistency into a life of servitude to
38:46the Arts and gift it to people they're
38:48needless to say if you hold your line
38:50and you are you're a good person you
38:51hold it down success will come that's
38:53wonderful everyone's obsessed with that
38:55 but I like the fact that she's
38:57having fun like that's what I like and
38:59every time I've ever met her she's a
39:01riot get her on the air yeah she's dead
39:03serious better craft and we have that in
39:05common I'm dead serious about her craft
39:06too but off the air she's wicked she's
39:10the best yeah it was it was um obviously
39:13and then she's been an unbelievable
39:16friend to me um but I also am sitting
39:20there being like I used to play that
39:22game in my head when I was little
39:24writing songs of like what would Taylor
39:26Maybe here like I literally like I used
39:29to that used to be a like you know who
39:31would you choose if you could pick
39:33anyone in the world to write a song you
39:34know and then I'm like wow I we almost
39:37both died in Flames writing a song
39:40that's not what I thought I want to stay
39:42there in that moment for a second where
39:43you were when you
39:45were making it all up dreaming it all up
39:48mhm because I think you know so much
39:52about making art and quickly gets turned
39:54into scale like okay I work at a
39:56streaming service so numbers math great
39:58math is the div is the Divine is the
40:00Divine equation of music sixcess now
40:03math it's not what I ever imagined and
40:06now we're going into a whole world where
40:07we're going to have to sort of fight the
40:09good fight to ensure that um AI remains
40:11a tool and not a scalable replacement
40:14which is very real and you won't let it
40:15happen and I won't let it happen so it's
40:17not going to happen because they can't
40:18do it without the artists and they can't
40:19do it without the people who support the
40:20art and the fan there aren't enough fans
40:22who like easy to to build a career
40:25around it it's not you have a lot of
40:26faith but don't you love making music
40:29what yeah duh I mean it's like why would
40:32you do it why would you make it easier
40:33for yourself I have this Theory no no no
40:35God no can I share it with you yes
40:37please the idea of AI is to create is to
40:39ultimately this is what they tell us is
40:40to ultimately create more time for
40:42people to do things that will um enable
40:45us to build a to to grow to evolve into
40:47a holistic better human whatever that is
40:49right right right right so one of the
40:51things I would imagine at the very top
40:52if not at the top of that list would be
40:54to learn an instrument and express
40:55yourself so why the are you saving
40:58time making music isn't that the thing
41:00you should be using your spare time to
41:02do that just concerns me yeah I I think
41:06uh yeah anyway we feel the same way I'm
41:08all about progress but anyway I'm not
41:09I'm not I was worried I'm not worried
41:11because I realize when artists make it
41:13they love it so and also I'm not worried
41:15because it's not anyone's dream to spend
41:18five minutes making something through AI
41:20you don't manifest joy and a wonderful
41:23life's experience doing that you
41:25manifest joy and a wonderful life's
41:27experience dreaming of playing football
41:29with Lon Messi or in the WNBA and then
41:33making it or going and um you know being
41:38a surgeon and studying under somebody
41:41who inspires you as a student and then
41:43ended up and then end up sharing a
41:45faculty with yeah yeah completely and
41:47dreaming of writing songs for Taylor
41:49Swift and then writing a song with
41:50Taylor Swift that is the purpose is it
41:53not I know it took a minute to get there
41:55but do you know what I'm saying No it's
41:56it's such a privilege to be able to
41:59spend any time and hopefully as much
42:01time as possible doing the thing that
42:03you you love to do through the work and
42:05through the pain and the challenge of it
42:07yeah I mean it's required in order to
42:10evolve you got to acknowledge the magic
42:11of a to B yeah totally and also accept
42:15all the time in the middle that you took
42:16to get there but just simplify the
42:18equation of I was a and I got to B yeah
42:22that's beautiful like there's a lot of
42:25messy and gnarly kind of middle yes it's
42:28it's beyond me this album is called The
42:31Secret of us um it finishes with a song
42:33called close to you why I'm a big
42:36tracklisting fan and I want to know why
42:38well it was it it was initially 12 songs
42:40and it ends on free now which in my
42:43mind is still the O um closer the
42:48closer close to you
42:51thematically and sonically finally
42:54worked within this colle songs am I not
42:57sure about it yeah no I love the song I
43:00genuinely I mean where it is in the
43:01order of things oh no no no it's
43:02perfectly there but if you see the track
43:07list the way it's written it's PS yeah
43:10the song wouldn't have been Revisited 7
43:13years after it was written if it wasn't
43:14for yeah my audience really adamantly
43:18going after it so I just it fits here I
43:22love the concept of ending on it it
43:26makes me happy um I picture the live
43:30show and I see it similarly and that
43:32made me happy and I wanted them to have
43:34it so um that's really cool so it
43:37belongs so you have this really great
43:38friendship with Audrey where the two of
43:40you have had your first stab at living
43:42together and writing together and now
43:43she's a songwriter MH it's pretty cool
43:46epic I'd imagine that's something that
43:47you don't want to let go of and I mean
43:49we all look for new reasons to explore
43:51and experiment and grow and nothing
43:54lasts forever but um must be nice to
43:57think that you've got that to come home
43:58to again it's so important to me and our
44:00friendship is the number one priority
44:02you know among all of it but the fact
44:04that we can do all of these things at
44:07once feels really lucky because it's
44:09always complicated you know what I mean
44:11living with someone is complicated then
44:12like working with someone's complicated
44:14and being having a best friend is always
44:16complicated but we just trust each other
44:19and we're really we've gotten good at
44:20communication I think through each other
44:23um just directness and again all we do
44:26when we're writing is expressing are
44:27feeling so it's so is it important to
44:28the two of you that you go out on the
44:30road or is it important that you have
44:31space and come back with new experiences
44:33that are separate to each other because
44:34otherwise you'll be writing about the
44:35same thing yeah I mean we just are
44:36different people and we have our own
44:37lives so I think maintaining that is
44:39also just crucial but it's not which
44:42doesn't feel like we're ever thinking
44:44too hard which is what I think it
44:47benefited the album um just being like
44:49fluid with all the feelings all the time
44:52what about the songwriting side of your
44:53life outside of yourself I know this
44:55might seem cheeky because no one sings
44:57your songs better than you but that's
45:00definitely not true I don't think that's
45:02true I think I mean I've heard people
45:04like unlike people who are generous to
45:06enough to know the lyrics I've heard
45:07people sing it I'm like that's yours now
45:09you mean online and stuff yeah I'm just
45:10like that's cool I mean you can have
45:11that opinion that's what came into my
45:14head when you said that I was like well
45:15I've heard someone saying about I was
45:17trying to figure that out cuz I mean
45:18it's like I mean you mean in general
45:20because of the personal voice if I take
45:21the the internet out of things which I
45:23try to do in my life all the time it's
45:25factually correct no one can sing your
45:27songs yeah yeah yeah okay okay yes yes
45:31but that being said that being said you
45:33know you've got a voice as a writer now
45:36which I can imagine I can hear somebody
45:39singing for the first time on this album
45:42before I could never do that I was like
45:43Gracie sings Gracie songs I wonder
45:45whether you'd be interested in writing
45:47with others in the same way that
45:48Taylor's had a great and and some of
45:49your other friends and Aaron works with
45:51people all the time how you feel about
45:52the idea of being part of a a collective
45:55of creative people now that your voice
45:56is so strong and so established I want
46:00to do it I want to do it um you sounded
46:02like you convincing yourself so want to
46:06well don't you want to know what I mean
46:07this is what I recently Sor it's the fun
46:09part of the interview I can't the ls I
46:11need the ls keep them up I was at
46:14Electric Lady uh couple weeks ago and um
46:18had we did close to you there
46:20um two months ago or something like that
46:23for 48 hours like it was quick and that
46:25was my first time working there but I've
46:26been in and out a bunch just like
46:28visiting and saying hi to whatever and
46:29Jack's Place basically is where you've
46:31been hanging atck exactly and his scene
46:33not seen as we spent 20 minutes trying
46:35to figure out an our conversation but
46:36yeah Karen yeah yeah yeah yeah yes yes
46:39so in that room I was I was there a
46:43couple weeks ago and for like a week and
46:45a half and um it was the first time that
46:47I'd really been into a studio where it's
46:49like the first of all and I think part
46:51of it is New York and I've been um
46:53spending a lot of my time there and it
46:55has felt really generative just kind of
46:57more conducive with coming back yeah and
47:01uh I guess honestly the reason that my
47:04answer to your question is like big yes
47:07is because having been at electric lady
47:10like people are the every room is filled
47:14and it's different people every day and
47:17and everyone's curious about like
47:18interacting with each other and new
47:20music has come from that you know new
47:23music of
47:24mine that wouldn't have come had there
47:28not been Community I'm going to cut yeah
47:31I'm going to cut to the chase here
47:32you're making another record or at least
47:33some songs I'm making we're just making
47:35making music and the door is more open
47:38than it's been before because your
47:39collaborative exper I'm this what I'm
47:41taking your collaborative experience
47:42with ory has show Audrey has shown you
47:44that you can yes and that it's like it's
47:47like a good time and I think my my I
47:50have led with like fear of doing you
47:53know anything with anyone ever and I
47:55don't mean like just music just in life
47:56if I'm always I've just leaned anxious
47:59cautious um like self-protective in a
48:02way that has often been unnecessary and
48:03only ever like hindered my you know
48:06abilities to like grow I guess but I
48:09feel like I'm really trying to get over
48:11that and like going to a big a good
48:14frame to you there it has been but it's
48:16also been the the you know listening
48:19back and doing any kind of analysis of
48:22the self has been funny because I'm like
48:24the person that I've actually realized
48:26that I am through this album is
48:32like sort of a realist or wanting to be
48:34a realist but actually like deep down
48:37wanting all the magic and being a
48:39romantic and I think those two things
48:42often buttheads and um I feel that a lot
48:46of the time and I think it's a choice to
48:49lean into the magic yeah and it
48:53takes
48:55active thought
48:57to do that for me um but I'm trying to
49:01more and more and that extends into you
49:04know collaborating with people or
49:05falling in love with someone or you know
49:08meeting an epic friend or something you
49:10know it's just like leaning in so trying
49:12to do that yeah man 24 and figuring
49:15it out one album at a time one day at a
49:16time it's um it's great to see you I you
49:19know when we first started playing your
49:20music I think everybody knew you know
49:24deep down that this was like going to be
49:26as long as you kept doing it that we'd
49:28see this and hear this growth and we
49:30we'd have this artist that we could come
49:31back to and listen to over and over
49:32again and that's what you want you just
49:34want to be like oh cool I can add this
49:35person to my own experiences through
49:37song or whatever um but to hear you make
49:40this record and and just get a sense
49:42that you're so happy and and excited
49:44about the future is great I'm really
49:45happy for you and I I know everyone's
49:47going to love this I'm seeing more shows
49:49get put on you know how about two nights
49:52at Radio City Music Hall you big three
