02:25generation Crosstrek but it is still
02:28built on a modified version of the
02:30global platform the last generation was
02:32built on they just enhanced the
02:34wheelbase a tiny tiny little bit but do
02:36you notice a difference in the way it
02:37drives for sure I can feel big
02:39improvements in here this has been
02:42re-engineered from the ground up with
02:44improvements to the suspension you can
02:46really feel that you eat up those bumps
02:49in the road it's a more pleasant Driving
02:51Experience it has a 10 percent stiffer
02:55chassis and the dampers have also been
02:58softened now the interesting thing is in
03:01the last time we drove the Crosstrek
03:02Andrea found out that Consumer Reports
03:05listed this as the quietest subcompact
03:07crossover and improvements have been
03:10made to all the bonding materials and
03:12the stiffer platform Andrea mentioned
03:14and it improves the amount of vibration
03:16and noise that comes into the cabin so
03:19already the quietest is now quieter
03:21however we will say at highway speeds
03:24and especially at passing Maneuvers it
03:26gets a little bit noisier but you know
03:27what in the city it's very quiet Subaru
03:30focuses more on utility and practicality
03:33rather than performance with this
03:36Crosstrek although I must say that the
03:39steering is a little bit heavier than I
03:42thought it would be it's quite pleasant
03:44we should probably say that we've chosen
03:46this the last two years as our top pick
03:48in this category and I think it's going
03:49right back to the top as well because
03:51they've just taken a diamond and
03:53Polished it a little bit more they have
03:56a great product they've just an
03:58incremental improvements to make it
04:00remain at the top of the class and it's
04:03very very hard when you start driving
04:05this comparing it to the others to knock
04:07it off that top position and you're
04:09right about that I just kind of tweaking
04:11different things in this model like the
04:14exterior you might look at it now now
04:16and say have they really changed all
04:18that much it's just kind of fine-tuning
04:21the vehicle yeah we saw it for the very
04:23first time in person yeah at the Toronto
04:25Auto Show and I even asked the rep from
04:27Subaru I said is this all new or is this
04:30just a face stuff they said no it's all
04:31new so the grill is a little bit bigger
04:33and the headlamps are thinner and you'll
04:36notice that there's a bar at the top
04:38that goes right into the headlamps and
04:40each trim gets a different color option
04:44for example the base model has matte
04:47black and this Onyx model gets gloss
04:50black and then the top trim has more of
04:53a gloss gray and then that matches the
04:56exterior side mirrors moving to the
04:59interior that is really where you're
05:01going to see the biggest improvements
05:03with a new center console design once
05:06again practical pretty good storage in
05:08here for a sub compact vehicle and now
05:11you've got the available 11.6 inch
05:14touchscreen with Wireless Apple carplay
05:16and Android auto now we should say it
05:18really is kind of standard it's only the
05:21base based model that doesn't get it so
05:23the reality is everybody for the most
05:25part is getting this unless you're cheap
05:27and you really want the base model it
05:30actually comes with some pretty good
05:33a little more get the 2.5 liter trust us
05:36on this one we've driven the other two
05:37liter it's kind of Pokey it's maybe a
05:40little more efficient do yourself a
05:42favor and get the two and a half liter
05:43do yourself a favor and get the bigger
05:46do yourself a favor and try this one big
05:49Improvement in here is the Comfort level
05:51of the seeds they've really made some
05:54big changes definitely feels more
05:56cushioned more comfortable I'm not sure
06:00that there's any more thigh support in
06:03here a little bit short yeah but still
06:06comfortable so try it you might just be
06:08fine with that and over here in the
06:10passenger there's an airbag actually in
06:13the seat bottom and if you were to get
06:14into an accident it inflates and it
06:17stops the passenger from what they call
06:18submarine into the footwell that's okay
06:22I don't mind that but they went through
06:23this whole presentation that said the
06:25seat bottom has been modified so your
06:27head doesn't Bob around as much
06:31you know we'd have to get a bobble head
06:34doll and try it out one anyway but I'm
06:37not sure if that's just marketing spin
06:39let's just say from my backside to you
06:41it's pretty comfortable and the heated
06:43steering wheel is not heated all the way
06:46through yeah surprisingly it's only nine
06:49right now nine and three yep come on add
06:52that come on candidate the interior of
06:56this does have a mix of hard plastic and
06:59soft touch materials which we would
07:01totally expect from this subcompact
07:03class I'd like that Subaru has gone with
07:06some different design elements with the
07:08trim there's very little piano black in
07:11here except at the center console and
07:13then of course around the screen now we
07:16did get some feedback when we did a
07:17little walk around video on this before
07:19that people don't like this new larger
07:22screen I don't know why you wouldn't
07:23want more real estate it makes your
07:25Apple carplay and Android auto look
07:27really great and usable some people
07:30complain that it's maybe a little bit
07:31laggy yeah um we did notice sometimes
07:34you go from one thing to the next and
07:36there's a bit of a heartbeat that it
07:38takes to switch but totally acceptable
07:40we've got our phones paired to wireless
07:43Android auto and I find going back and
07:46forth to my apps on the phone is very
07:49fast so let's get into safety you could
07:51say that having it come standard with
07:54all-wheel drive makes it a safer vehicle
07:56and I think a lot of people who are
07:58dealing with harsher winters will really
08:00like this this gets 8.7 inches of ground
08:03clearance which is fantastic and also it
08:07is the newest version of symmetrical
08:10all-wheel drive so Subaru is known for
08:12its eyesight system so you have stereo
08:15cameras what stereo means is two cameras
08:18and they look down the road for things
08:20like bicycles and pedestrians and all
08:21that kind of stuff now for this model on
08:24all trims they've added a third camera
08:26it's called a mono camera with a wider
08:29field of view so that camera has a 108
08:32degree field of view and the stereo
08:34cameras are also 38 percent wider so you
08:37got more coverage if anything was to
08:39happen also want to add that blind spot
08:42monitoring in rear cross traffic alert
08:44are available one up from the base model
08:47this comes standard with LED headlamps
08:49LED rear combination lamps 17-inch
08:53Wheels available 18 inch and you get a
08:56temporary spare tire let's get into the
08:58trims in Canada one up from the base
09:00model adds the larger 11.6 inch
09:03touchscreen Wireless Apple carplay and
09:05Android auto a six-speaker audio system
09:08premium cloth Upholstery and a heated
09:11steering wheel the Onyx trim has the
09:14power driver seat sunroof and a wireless
09:16charger and the top trim adds navigation
09:19a 10 speaker Harman Kardon sound system
09:22leather upholstery with orange stitching
09:24in the United States the power driver
09:26seat is optional on the sport and
09:28premium trims standard on the top trim
09:31and the moon roof is optional on all
09:33trims except for the base model a
09:35wireless charger is optional on the two
09:37base models standard on the top two the
09:40top limited trim adds most of the same
09:42features we get on our top Canadian trim
09:44but the Harman Kardon sound system is an
09:46option and there's not a heated steering
09:48wheel available on the U.S Crosstrack
09:50here's me getting in the back seat I
09:52would say that the leg room is good the
09:54Headroom is good the seats are
09:56comfortable we talked about that overall
09:58well done comparing the Crosstrek to
10:00other competitors like the Toyota
10:02Corolla cross and the Honda HRV the
10:05Subaru offers 42.9 inches of front row
10:08legroom which is the same as the Toyota
10:10and an inch more than the Honda second
10:13row legroom is great at 36.5 inches it
10:17beats the Corolla Cross by 4.5 inches
10:20but offers about an inch less than the
10:23HRV one great thing about the Crosstrek
10:25is the shape of the rear cargo area it's
10:28nice and square making it easy to load
10:31things in and out of the back cargo area
10:33Andrew mentioned it already but look at
10:36that underneath the floor that's a real
10:38spare tire cargo space behind the second
10:40row at 19.9 cubic feet is less than both
10:44of these competitors overall cargo space
10:47at 54.7 cubic feet is more than the HRV
10:51but less than the Corolla cross so we're
10:54on the road for this review and we
10:55finally remember to bring coffee time
10:58now for questions coffee and cars your
11:01questions from Instagram is Subaru going
11:04to offer the hybrid powertrain that is
11:05available for this model in Europe and
11:08other markets they are not going to
11:10offer it but we did speak to a super
11:13executive last night and they say that
11:16people want more fuel-efficient vehicles
11:18and so they are going to revisit it yeah
11:21nothing confirmed now the plug-in that
11:23was sold was done also as a compliance
11:26car meaning they had zero emission
11:28mandates in certain jurisdictions
11:30however the goal posts have moved and
11:33now those cars don't actually qualify
11:35for the zero emission mandate that's why
11:37they have soltera fear of full battery
11:40EV now they have that part taken care of
11:42how does this model improve on things
11:45from the previous generation into terms
11:47of fuel economy feature content and
11:50practicality well fuel economy is the
11:53same same no change in fuel economy
11:55numbers no change in practicality still
11:58a practical crossover still the great
12:01crosstalk around the same size the
12:03wheelbase is a tiny bit longer but
12:06that's about it feature content boy they
12:09really listen to Consumers few things
12:12consumers wanted more standard features
12:15on the base trim so Subaru provided that
12:18with adding heated front seats new
12:21steering responsive LED headlamps with
12:24high beam assist and then of course they
12:27added some new features that are
12:30available on this model okay so the base
12:32model has the stack seven inch screens
12:34we saw that with the old Legacy and the
12:36Outback now that's only on the base
12:38model every other gets the big show
12:40stopper screen here connectivity is a
12:42big deal also wireless charger is a big
12:45deal Wireless Apple and Android so
12:48there's a long list of things one thing
12:49I wish they had added Andrea oh by the
12:52way they added the sunroof on the Onyx
12:54trim the one we're in the old outdoor
12:55didn't have that is a power liftgate
12:57yeah no power liftgate there aren't a
12:59lot of subcompact crossovers that have a
13:02power liftgate there are only a few so
13:04it's not surprising that it doesn't have
13:07it but it would be a nice feature to
13:09have there's also no height adjustment
13:11on the passenger side and two features
13:14that this Crosstrek doesn't have that
13:15you may find in other subcompact
13:18crossovers ventilated front seats and
13:21heated rear seats will there be a
13:23cross-truck Wilderness model the Outback
13:26Wilderness is a big success in sales in
13:28Quebec you know what they missed Andrea
13:30they missed our walk around video at the
13:32New York Auto Show they unveiled it at
13:34the New York show so you have to kind of
13:37think about it this way so we used to
13:39have the outdoor model which was their
13:40best seller they've gotten rid of that
13:42they've added this Onyx which is kind of
13:45like it and the sunroof is a big
13:46addition for a lot of people but it also
13:49opened up a hole for a more outdoorsy
13:52version and that's where you get see
13:54these are cloth seats that's where you
13:56get those wipe down neoprene kind of
13:58seats on that one right yeah these are
13:59these seats our durable cloth seats on
14:04the Onyx trim and then some of the other
14:05trims get premium cloth cloth and then
14:08Leather So a couple things about the
14:10Wilderness model it will be arriving
14:12towards the end of this year the
14:15Wilderness model in the U.S and Canada
14:17will be made in the U.S some of you have
14:20asked us about that Alpine green color
14:23for the Crosstrek which the U.S gets
14:26made in the U.S cross tracks are the
14:29ones that get the Alpine green so since
14:31the Wilderness will be made in the U.S
14:33the Canadian wilderness will also get
14:37the option of Alpine green okay so we
14:39should probably back up a little bit all
14:41of the Canadian crosstracks come from
14:43Japan and then half of the models or the
14:47ones with the smaller base engine come
14:49from Japan all of the ones with the
14:51bigger engine which is the one you
14:52should buy are made in Indiana okay so
14:55Americans you get the American-made one
14:57in Indiana and get the larger engine do
14:59yourself a favor and now it it's time
15:01for our Hot Topic what's this one Andrea
15:03we will probably be cross shopping this
15:05versus the Mazda cx-30 to replace my
15:09wife's 2013 CX-5 this summer I see so
15:13many crosstreks on the road they must
15:14know something so I would say that the
15:16Crosstrek is a better all-rounder
15:19because the cx-30 is small for the back
15:22seat and the cargo area however they
15:26have one ace up their sleeve and that is
15:28a turbocharged engine yeah the cx-30 is
15:32definitely the one to get based on
15:34performance it is such an engaging Drive
15:37whether you get the non-turbo or the
15:40turbocharged engine both of them are
15:42terrific but I think that for the
15:45Crosstrek when you're looking for
15:47practicality and maybe a second vehicle
15:49for a family with car seats in the back
15:52you're going to find this just to be a
15:55little bit better more practical
15:57all right so let's get into the two
15:59different engines in the fuel economy
16:01and More in our vital stats let's start
16:03with pricing we'll do Canada first and
16:06then move on to the U.S the two liter
16:08four-cylinder starts at just under 29
16:11000 Canadian and the top limited trim is
16:14just under 37 000. in the U.S the base
16:18model starts at just under 25 000 and
16:21the top limited trim is just under
16:23Thirty one thousand dollars here's the

16:30that's 27 miles per gallon City 34 miles
16:34per gallon highway the larger 2.5 liter
16:37gets 8.8 liters per hundred kilometers
16:39in the city seven on the highway that's

16:45gallon highway the Crosstrek can tow
16:471500 pounds the warranty is three years
16:49sixty thousand kilometers or 36 000
16:52miles so you want a subcompact crossover

17:37one thousand dollars so there are four

17:41consider lightning round two things we
17:44like two things we like to see improve I
17:46really like the changes that Subaru made
17:48to the suspension I like the fact that
17:50they just improve what already worked
17:52I'd like to see a height adjustment on
17:54the passenger side even if it is a
17:57manual adjustment one little luxury
17:59feature I'd like a power lift gate we
18:01thought the last one was good this one
18:03is even better and it remains at the top
