00:03my name is alan bullard and i'd like to

00:05talk to you about my scale explorer

00:07books

00:08it's a five volume series which helps

00:11you to learn your piano scales and

00:12arpeggios really well

00:14and to use them in a real life situation

00:18scales and arpeggios after all are the

00:20building blocks of music

00:22and knowing them makes learning new

00:24pieces so much easier

00:28the books are published by abrsm and are

00:31based on their practical piano syllabus

00:33and in this video i'm talking about the

00:36grade 5 book

00:37and playing some of the music in it for

00:40each key that features in the syllabus

00:42there's a section of exercises leading

00:45to the complete scale or arpeggio

00:47and then some pieces using them as with

00:50the earlier books

00:51we begin with the scales already learnt

00:53in previous books

00:55but unlike in the earlier grades all the

00:57scales

00:58new and old are played hands together in

01:00the exam

01:02though of course hands separately

01:03practice is still useful too

01:06so for each key there are workouts

01:09a complete scale and or arpeggio and

01:12pieces

01:13and there is a tune factory for some

01:14keys too

01:17as with book four there is a suggestion

01:19in the introduction to practice the

01:21workouts in different ways

01:23steadily and evenly of course but also

01:25with dotted rhythms

01:27this all helps with finger control and

01:29smoothness

01:30but today i'm just going to play a

01:32selection of the pieces

01:34and i'm going to begin with gentle

01:36awakening

01:37in the b major section but which uses

01:40the diminished seventh broken chord

01:42starting on b

01:44which is new at this grade so gentle

01:52awakening

02:46moving through the book to the a flat

02:47major scale

02:49which is to be played staccato in the

02:51exam

02:52here's a piece called staccato scouzo

02:57you'll notice that this piece modulates

02:59two different keys

03:00many of the pieces in the book do this

03:02but they are always the keys that have

03:04already been learnt

03:38f sharp minor now and an active piece

03:41called hungarian song

03:43using the scotch snap rhythm

04:35that last piece was followed by a tune

04:38encouraging more use of the scop snap

04:42now for some new keys for d flat major

04:45i've written a piece called nightfall

06:29as usual at the end of the book there

06:31are some extra pieces

06:33i'll play reconciliation in f sharp

06:36and then a duet called city square

06:39there is one duet in each book and they

06:42can be played by pupil and teacher

06:44or by two pupils or if you've got a

06:47digital piano

06:48you can record the player two part and

06:50then play the player one part with it

06:53which is what i've done today first of
