00:00what's happening it's shane here it's
00:02that time of year again
00:04some of my most requested videos the top
00:08five videos the top 10 videos where i
00:11basically rank the best types of
00:14different degrees so in this case we are
00:16going to be talking about the top five
00:18master's degrees all right so getting a
00:20master's degree usually you know you got
00:23your bachelor's first that takes about
00:25four years or so and then you get your
00:27master's which is going to take probably
00:29an extra two years so those who get a
00:31master's degree usually they're going to
00:33be about 66 000 in debt according to the
00:37national center of educational
00:38statistics and according to education
00:40data.org they're about 71 000 in debt so
00:44it can be very expensive but as i've
00:46talked about in other videos on the
00:47channel um like is a graduate school
00:50degree worth it for instance uh when it
00:52comes to master's degrees sometimes
00:55doing those extra two years can in fact
00:57be worth it at least from a financial
00:59standpoint but sometimes it's not worth
01:02it and in today's video i'm going to be
01:03talking about some of the degrees where
01:06in my opinion as long as you do your due
01:08diligence do your research it can be
01:10worth it all right so let's jump right
01:12into it number five on the list is going
01:15to be a technology related master's
01:18degree like computer science okay so
01:21according to the national center of
01:23educational statistics about 12 000
01:25people get a computer science related
01:28master's degree every year and that of
01:30course is just here in the united states
01:32but i'm sure there's a lot more than
01:33that if you look worldwide can't say
01:35enough about the skill set of coding and
01:37computer science and there are some
01:39companies out there that do want to see
01:40people get master's degrees for certain
01:43types of coding so especially the types
01:45of programming that are very complicated
01:47you will see companies want to hire
01:49people that have master's degrees
01:50instead of bachelors however when it
01:52comes to technology it's good at pretty
01:55much every level whether it's like an
01:59no degree at all or whether you're going
02:01up to a master's or even sometimes a
02:04doctorate technology degrees and just
02:05technology skills in general are just
02:08good on every level so there are some
02:10cases where from a financial standpoint
02:13which is pretty much all i'm going to be
02:14talking about in this video it is going
02:16to be worth it for you to get a master's
02:18degree but for most types of programming
02:20jobs out there that are a little simpler
02:22you can get along with just a bachelor's
02:24degree sometimes even less than that and
02:26in some cases if you're really good at
02:27teaching yourself you're an auto didact
02:30you can just take a boot camp or even
02:32just learn on your own but with that
02:34being said according to glassdoor
02:36computer scientists make about a hundred
02:38and six thousand dollars per year and
02:40this is all different types of computer
02:42scientists so ones who have master's
02:44degrees likely would be making more than
02:46this and this of course is the average
02:47base pay and when you work for
02:49technology companies at least a lot of
02:51tech companies out there they have first
02:53of all incredible benefits and then on
02:56top of that you can get some
02:58unbelievable bonuses as well so your
03:00actual compensation would be quite a bit
03:02higher than 106 000 a year and if you
03:05want to know exactly how much you would
03:07be making with the different positions
03:08that you would be applying for i always
03:10recommend checking out
03:12levels.fyi really great website where
03:14people basically secretly share not only
03:17their base pay but how much they bonus
03:19and how much they might get in something
03:21like stock options and stock options for
03:24those of you who don't know is where a
03:26company actually pays you partially in
03:28the company stock next one on the list
03:30i'm going to be talking about is an
03:32engineering master's degree so there are
03:34certain engineering degrees where it
03:36makes a little more sense for you to
03:37pursue higher education and get your
03:39masters one of them where it would make
03:41sense in many circumstances of course
03:44depending on what job you're going for
03:46is going to be electrical engineering
03:48and there are about 11 000 electrical
03:50engineering and electronics engineering
03:52masters that are handed out per year in
03:54the united states so again
03:57many jobs out there where you do not
03:59need a master's degree you'll get by
04:01just fine with a bachelor's however
04:03there are some careers some jobs some
04:06companies that like to see people who
04:08have a master's degree because it does
04:10require a little bit of extra knowledge
04:12so there are certain cases where doing
04:14those extra two years getting that
04:15master's degree can work out from a
04:17financial perspective and also it can
04:19help you just from a knowledge
04:21perspective in general so according to
04:23glassdoor electrical engineers make
04:25about 95 000 a year on average
04:28and of course if you had a master's
04:30degree you would be making quite a bit
04:31more than that so engineering is very
04:34solid on every level you look at from
04:36associate degrees uh bachelor degrees
04:38master's degrees and in some cases
04:40getting a doctorate engineering is not
04:42something that you can get into on your
04:44own and kind of just teach yourself it
04:46is something you do need to actually go
04:48to school and get educated in order to
04:50learn and in some cases getting a
04:52master's degree can be worth it number
04:54three on the list is going to be a
04:57masters in data science now there's
05:00several different ways that you can
05:01become a data scientist this is one of
05:03the newest and hottest careers out there
05:06and of course there's always some
05:07confusion about like what the heck is
05:09the difference between a data scientist
05:10and a computer scientist because they
05:12basically sound like they're the same
05:14and what data scientists do is they take
05:17some information and they derive meaning
05:20from that information right they take
05:22some a bunch of information that a
05:23company might be getting from
05:25impressions what they're doing with ads
05:27for instance and then they derive some
05:29meaning from that information and it
05:31might sound like that's not very
05:32impressive right it sounds very simple
05:34probably doesn't help companies all that
05:36much but that's actually where you're
05:37wrong because this is one of the most
05:39profitable skills that you can possibly
05:41learn so imagine that you're a company
05:43and you have a marketing budget of you
05:46know ten thousand dollars or something
05:48like that and you can show
05:50your ad to i'm just gonna make it simple
05:52like a hundred thousand people and let's
05:54say this ad is selling a squid game
05:56hoodie okay so you know people who are
05:58huge fans of the show
06:00might want to buy this hoodie if you
06:02show this hoodie to a hundred thousand
06:04random people you might get like i don't
06:07know one or two purchases however if you
06:09show this ad to a hundred thousand
06:11people that through data science you
06:13have verified are fans of the show that
06:16might increase your sales from one or
06:18to 20. and if you can go even further
06:21with data science let's say you are able
06:23to figure out that okay i'm going to
06:25show it to 100 000 people who are fans
06:28but you even go one step further and you
06:31show it to 100 000 people who are fans
06:34and it's been shown in the past that
06:36they like to purchase merchandise for
06:39shows that they really like that might
06:41increase your sales from one to two to
06:44one to two hundred so data is incredibly
06:47valuable it's something that has just
06:49absolutely exploded especially over the
06:51last 10 years there's also a ton of
06:53controversy around it because some giant
06:56companies you know are harvesting your
06:58data against your wishes or against your
07:01will so anyways what a data scientist
07:03actually is is either a statistician
07:06who's pretty good at programming or a
07:08programmer who's really good at
07:09statistics and then they basically
07:11create models that use data in order to
07:13solve big problems for a company so one
07:16of the most common ways of becoming a
07:17data scientist is graduating with a
07:19master's in statistics which 3 100
07:22people actually do that every year in
07:24the us and a data scientist according to
07:26glassdoor makes about a hundred and
07:28seventeen thousand 000 per year and data
07:30science is very new this is one of those
07:32careers that probably didn't even exist
07:34when you were born and there is a ton of
07:36debate especially in the technology
07:38industry whether you actually need to
07:40get a master's in order to get into data
07:42science or not but many people think
07:45that you do so in some cases it can be
07:47worth it for you to get a masters over a
07:49bachelor's however the next one on the
07:51list is a career where you absolutely
07:54have to get a master's in order to get
07:56into it and that is going to be number
07:58two nurse practitioner all right so
08:01nurse practitioners are basically super
08:03nurses they are able to diagnose as well
08:07as prescribe medications almost like a
08:09doctor and they don't even have to be
08:12under doctor supervision in order to
08:14become a nurse practitioner at the
08:16master's level you're going to need a
08:18masters of science in nursing and last
08:21year there were about 28 000 people who
08:23graduated with this degree one of the
08:25best careers you can go into a
08:27ridiculous amount of demand also has
08:30very high meaning medical careers do
08:33tend to have very high meaning scores so
08:35that means over a long term basis you're
08:37probably going to be a little bit more
08:39satisfied with your career medical jobs
08:41also tend to be incredibly stable and
08:44according to glassdoor you're going to
08:45be making a cool 121 thousand dollars a
08:49year now this is actually very similar
08:51to the next one on our list which is
08:53going to be physician assistant now
08:56known as physician associate so
08:58apparently all of the pas the physician
09:01assistants got together and they were
09:03like you know what it's a little bit
09:05degrading the doctors refer to us as
09:08their assistants so effective
09:10immediately i am promoting you
09:12from assistant to the regional manager
09:14to assistant regional manager
09:17and so now they want to be known as
09:18physician associates right they are not
09:21assisting the doctors they are just
09:23associated with them however pretty much
09:25every major government organization that
09:27collects statistics on this stuff that i
09:29you know use for these videos still
09:30refers to them as physician assistants
09:33but there's about 8 500 of them that
09:36graduate every single year and this is a
09:38master's degree and they are very
09:40similar to nurse practitioners and that
09:42they're almost like mini doctors they
09:45can diagnose they can prescribe however
09:47they do have to be under the supervision
09:50of a doctor so this is a great career
09:52for somebody who kind of wants to do a
09:55lot of the things that doctors get to do
09:57but they also don't want to have to deal
09:59with going to medical school you know
10:01spending 12 years in school and then
10:03doing a residency that can be up to like
10:05seven years and then sometimes doing an
10:07extra two years in a fellowship it can
10:09just be a little bit overwhelming how
10:11you know you spend all the best years of
10:13your life studying like 80 hours a week
10:15and then you're like working 80 hours a
10:17week in residency and you're probably
10:19500 000 in debt by the time you actually
10:22start to make money in your mid-30s or
10:24something sometimes even late 30s and so
10:26if you don't want to deal with that
10:28whole headache of a process
10:30you know looking into something like
10:31nurse practitioner or physician
10:33associate might be a good idea for you
10:36so yeah ridiculous amount of demand for
10:38this one according to glassdoor they
10:40make around a hundred and one thousand
10:42dollars per year so yeah not too bad
10:45one reason why i actually rank them
10:47slightly better than nurse practitioner
10:49which is different than last year
10:51is because there seems to be some signs
10:55that a nurse practitioner might be
10:57headed towards getting over saturated
11:00now i'm not saying they're getting
11:01oversaturated at this point and actually
11:03they're not getting oversaturated at all
11:05i mean i don't even know why i said that
11:07uh really just a little bit saturated
11:09and really all that has to do with is
11:11how the accrediting boards and the
11:13people who regulate universities operate
11:16so if they give universities the green
11:18light the go-ahead to basically churn
11:20out as many people as possible in these
11:22different careers of course eventually
11:25it is going to become saturated this is
11:27a huge problem in pharmacy right now for
11:29instance and it appears that the people
11:31in charge are kind of limiting that when
11:33it comes to physician associates and
11:36when it comes to nurse practitioners
11:37they are kind of giving the green light
11:39the go-ahead but again nobody knows what
11:41happens they could change this tomorrow
11:44there's only indicators out there both
11:47of these careers are fantastic at this
11:49point so yeah definitely a few options
11:51for you to look into if you are somebody
11:53who is interested in higher education
11:55you are interested in getting a master's
11:57hope you enjoyed the video um i forgot
11:59to ask you to like subscribe and all
12:02that sort of thing i think i was
12:03supposed to do that at the beginning of
12:04the video um hopefully we can get to
12:06like a thousand likes
12:08that'd be cool right that's a decent
12:09goal and i will see you guys next time
