00:05 today I'm gonna talk about some changes
00:08 in modern cars that you may not know
00:11 about no the first thing I got to talk
00:12 about is your car's battery and the
00:15 charging system the alternator you've
00:17 gotten very complicated lately but if
00:19 you understand their complexity you
00:21 won't fall into a trap that I've seen
00:23 many other people fall into for a lack
00:25 of knowledge it used to be the charging
00:27 system was simple the battery would
00:29 stock the car sending power to the
00:31 starter running the ignition and fuel
00:32 system and the alternator would charge
00:36 the battery decades ago companies like
00:39 Honda decided to get better gas mileage
00:41 they would have the alternator charging
00:44 controlled by the main computer of the
00:46 vehicle when they started out with those
00:48 systems I saw a lot of guys mechanics
00:50 included that would replace an
00:52 alternator in a car that wasn't charging
00:54 only to find that it didn't charge
00:55 either because it was a problem in the
00:57 computer system which is something you
00:59 don't want to occur so you want to
01:01 prevent it now in many modern cars
01:03 there's a sensor called the electronic
01:06 battery sensor it's on the negative
01:08 terminal going to the frame engine - it
01:10 grounds the whole vehicle the engines
01:12 transmission and the body of the car Wow
01:15 this electronic sensor sends feedback
01:18 information to the computer about the
01:20 battery voltage temperature sun's the
01:23 information so the computer can control
01:25 the charge incorrectly now the way these
01:28 things are set up today in a modern
01:30 computerized car you have to jumpstart
01:33 them correctly or you're gonna have a
01:34 problem with that system a lot of times
01:37 if you do jump start a car incorrectly
01:39 it won't run right after you do that so
01:42 all you gotta do is follow this follow
01:44 the directions that jump-starting a car
01:46 this way get you jump starter with the
01:48 positive on the positive terminal and
01:50 then get the negative for your jump
01:52 stick it on a gunmetal fire right here
01:55 there's a bracket right on the engine
01:56 block now originally people said you're
01:59 supposed to jumpstart a car that way
02:01 anyway because when you connect the last
02:04 cable a second one sometimes there's a
02:06 spark and if the spark is right up by
02:09 the battery sometimes you could have an
02:11 explosion from the hydrogen gas that
02:13 now it's a very rare thing it generally
02:16 only happens if a battery is somewhat
02:18 frozen or if you're in an enclosed area
02:20 I'm outside here so I really don't care
02:22 I never had any problems with it but now
02:24 you really need to do this because of
02:27 that electronic battery sensor because
02:29 if you jump-started it and put the
02:31 negative from your jumper on the battery
02:35 the car would start but the sensor on
02:38 that negative terminal is further down
02:40 and it messes with how it reads and once
02:43 you start the car often bad things will
02:46 happen why not I don't write the
02:48 charging system might not charge
02:49 correctly now if you did jumpstart it
02:52 wrong it doesn't do any permanent damage
02:53 but you have to visit a mechanic like me
02:55 that has a fancy scan tool then we go
02:58 through our scan tool stuff and we'd get
03:00 to the suction where we had reset the
03:02 electronic battery sensor system so
03:05 would work correctly but if you
03:07 jump-started by putting the negative
03:09 terminal on the engine somewhere you
03:11 don't have to worry about that so
03:12 jumpstart him that way
03:13 ain't no to worry about messing up that
03:15 stupid sensor system that many of the
03:17 computerized cars have these days now
03:19 the next thing we're gonna talk about
03:20 modern cars is the batteries yesterday
03:24 when you replace the battery you replace
03:26 it with the same style battery had the
03:28 same cranking amps cold cranking amps
03:30 but today there's various types of
03:32 batteries out there and you want to make
03:34 sure you're putting the right one in
03:35 your car as a replacement you got an old
03:37 car like this is just a let acid battery
03:39 no big deal let's say your car came with
03:41 an absorbed glass mat battery the marks
03:44 bounce up there more power they tend to
03:46 last longer crank a lot better but if
03:48 your car has one of those in it you have
03:51 to replace that battery with another
03:53 absorbed glass mat battery because I
03:55 know the vehicles a little charging
03:57 system with the computer is designed for
03:59 that system the absorbed glass mat
04:02 battery stamped to be recharged
04:04 differently when I recharge them with my
04:06 fancy recharge or I have to put it on
04:08 the special setting for them you can't
04:10 just use the normal full blast
04:12 let s a battery charger or it won't be
04:15 charged correctly so make sure you
04:16 replace your battery with the correct
04:18 battery and in the case of quite a few
04:21 modern-day cars you will also have to
04:23 have the car reprogrammed for the new
04:25 battery and that's because of
04:27 further refinements in computer charging
04:30 technology the first company that really
04:32 want mass and that was BMW and when you
04:34 change the banner into BMW you have to
04:37 get a fancy scan tool hooked up to
04:39 restart it to tell the computer that its
04:41 power now has a brand new battery in it
04:43 now that's important because of the way
04:45 the software is designed you buy a brand
04:47 new BMW got a brand new battery let's
04:49 say it's four years old the computer in
04:51 your car knows it's four years old and
04:53 it tends to charge it more because an
04:55 old battery needs more charging to keep
04:57 it going but when it finally goes bad if
04:59 you replace the battery and just put it
05:02 in and don't reprogram the car it'll
05:04 start but your computer still thinks
05:06 that you've got a four year old battery
05:09 in the car it will charge it too much
05:10 overcharge the battery and often within
05:12 a year a new banner will be destroyed
05:15 now as you can see my fancy scam tool
05:17 he's got to cite you for that
05:18 BMS you just push that then you pick the
05:21 car that you're working on it has that
05:23 system and it allows you to reset it
05:25 we'll get a BMW here so what this
05:27 computer does when it's connected to a
05:30 BMW it isn't now but when it is it just
05:34 allows you to resets how you change the
05:36 Barry push buttons and then it resets
05:38 the whole system now you can't do this
05:40 yourself so if you find out that your
05:43 car was one of the cars on its list and
05:45 it has a battery management system that
05:48 has to be reset when you place the
05:50 battery you got to pay a mechanic to do
05:51 this because if you don't you're gonna
05:53 have problems down the line and you
05:54 might well ask Scotty what are they
05:56 making cars this insanely crazy well
05:58 because of course they can and they love
06:01 making stuff computer-controlled so
06:03 that's just the way it is realize you
06:07 got one of those cars when you have the
06:08 battery replace you're gonna have to pay
06:10 mechanic to reset the system you're not
06:12 gonna go buy one of these $3500 scan
06:14 tools you just pay somebody to reset it
06:16 I'd realize there is a tool you can use
06:18 when you change your battery or if you
06:20 disconnect your videos you're working on
06:21 the car that's one of these memory keep
06:24 alive systems this one was like I don't
06:26 know 12 13 bucks from Amazon it's very
06:29 simple this connects to any 12-volt
06:31 power supply and this it just plugs into
06:34 the OBD memory port there deep and so
06:38 you don't lose them
06:40 a car some of these cars minis BMWs even
06:44 Lincoln's you got automatic windows that
06:46 come up and then down a little when you
06:48 close them and then up automatically and
06:51 a lot of the systems they won't work the
06:53 car won't I don't write when you
06:55 disconnect the battery and either
06:56 replace it or work on a car and then
06:58 connect the back on if you have one of
07:00 these keep memory alive devices hooked
07:02 up you don't have to deal with any of
07:04 their crap so they're very handy things
07:05 and they're so cheap if you're gonna
07:07 work on your car if you're ever gonna
07:08 change a battery on your car you
07:09 definitely need to get one of these
07:11 other nuts changing technology you may
07:13 not know about has to do with the glass
07:15 in your car know your windshield has
07:17 always really made out of laminated
07:19 glass there's a layer of glass then
07:21 there's a vinyl layer in between and
07:23 then there's another layer of glass
07:25 under that's so it won't break and
07:28 shatter if you get the wreck and hit it
07:29 it'll crack but it won't cause jagged
07:32 pieces to come and comfy but the side
07:34 glass now originally they actually came
07:37 with laminated glass but ten years later
07:38 they changed the laws of the United
07:40 States and instead they have what they
07:42 call safety glass and this is tempered
07:44 glass it's made so that if it hits it
07:48 shatters into a zillion different pieces
07:50 it's not like the laminated stuff it's
07:53 cheaper to make but there's a little
07:54 tiny pieces that won't cut and if you're
07:57 in a wreck and you're stuck in the power
07:59 windows don't work anymore a lot of
08:00 people have those little hammers those
08:02 little glass headers that they pop on it
08:04 then it shatters then climb out the
08:06 well some of the newer cars they don't
08:10 use safety glass on the side they've
08:12 gone back to using laminated glass and
08:15 if you have a car like that and you get
08:16 in a rollover the little hammer devices
08:19 and the little ones that have a pin that
08:21 snaps and shatters the glass they won't
08:24 share it of the glass because it's
08:25 laminated glass you'll just stay there
08:27 so if you've got a relatively new car it
08:31 behooves you to find out does your car
08:33 have side glass that's the old-fashioned
08:36 tempered glass that will shatter or is
08:39 that the more modern laminated glass on
08:42 the side now you windshields always
08:43 gonna be laminated that's no problem but
08:45 the side ones they could go either way
08:47 now find out before you need to know the
08:51 last thing you want to know is if your
08:52 car rolls over he's talking
08:53 ditch and you can't get off gee I wonder
08:55 what kind of glass I have if I can break
08:57 it or not find out ahead of time
08:59 give them your in number and I can say
09:01 that has laminated glass or that has
09:03 tempered glass on the side easy to do
09:05 but you want to know now not if you're
09:07 in a pinch so now you know cars are
09:10 evolving they're becoming more
09:11 complicated that you should know a
09:13 little bit more about so you're not only
09:15 gonna stay safe you're gonna keep from
09:18 having to pay for a really expensive
09:19 repairs that you could have avoided in
09:22 the first place with a little knowledge
09:25 and here's some bonus questions and
09:28 answers Willy Wonka's a full-size 2013
09:32 Toyota Camry 4 cylinder I lose power
09:35 once it gets about 4,500 revolutions
09:38 I had a mechanic look at it he can't
09:41 figure it out it's got three codes po7
09:44 17p 1603 and P 1605 a rough idling
09:48 engine stalled input speed sensor
09:50 there's a lot of reasons cars can't rev
09:51 up too high you can't lie cavernous
09:53 clogged it'll do that
09:54 Toyota's are known for that if the fuel
09:55 pumps weak well the older Toyota's like
09:57 that aren't known for fuel pump problems
09:59 that's a new thing that they've made
10:00 something wrong and they got to recall a
10:02 bunch of them but that's newer than
10:04 I fixed one a couple months ago with the
10:06 same exact problem I drove it around
10:08 with my scan tool hooked up erased the
10:10 codes the code started coming back I
10:12 pushed my record button and then I
10:14 looked at the data it turns out sensor
10:16 one oxygen sensor air fuel ratio sensors
10:19 but they look just like an oxygen sensor
10:21 that's the sensor that's before the
10:23 catalytic converter when I looked at
10:24 that data it was going on it would just
10:26 drop to zero so I checked the wiring it
10:28 was all ok so all I did was buy a new
10:30 sensor from Toyota the original
10:33 equipment one don't get a cheap
10:34 after-market one like a Bosch or
10:35 something they won't work get the
10:37 original equipment oxygen sensor bolted
10:39 on and it could easily fix a problem
10:40 because it did on mine thank goodness it
10:42 wasn't the computer because the computer
10:43 circuit could go out and do that - it
10:45 was the actual sensor itself I replaced
10:47 the bank one oxygen sensors one before
10:50 the catalytic converter fix the whole
10:53 so if you never want to miss another one
10:55 of my new car repair videos remember to
