00:00if you can't tell by now by my love of
00:03YouTube and Google and all of that kind
00:05of stuff I absolutely love organic
00:09content marketing I think it's the piece
00:11that most people are missing and if I
00:15which you should already know this
00:17because I mentioned it a lot on this
00:18channel that Google is the number one
00:20search engine and YouTube is the number
00:22two what would you say you think is the
00:25number three search engine if you said
00:27Pinterest you would be right if you said
00:29anything else you're wrong
00:31um Pinterest Pinterest is the third most
00:36popular search engine in the world only
00:39behind Google and YouTube that's huge
00:42and we should really be using Pinterest
00:44to like further our efforts of our
00:47already existing organic marketing
00:49strategy so if you're already creating
00:51content on YouTube you should be using
00:53Pinterest if you're creating content on
00:55Instagram you should be using Pinterest
00:56if you're creating content on your blog
00:58you should be using Pinterest if you
00:59have products you should be using
01:01Pinterest so let's talk about how you as
01:04a beginner to Pinterest can get started
01:06right now and use it to grow your
01:08business what is up y'all and welcome
01:10back to the hey Jessica Channel I am
01:12that you are here today we have Sahar an
01:15amazing Pinterest strategist to deliver
01:17you everything you need to know to grow
01:20on Pinterest to start on Pinterest and
01:22to get your business found on Pinterest
01:24so I'm gonna shut up and let Sahar take
01:28let's go thanks for having me Jessica I
01:31am so pumped for this episode all right
01:34let's get into how to get started with
01:36Pinterest now I'm pretty sure that
01:38you've heard of Pinterest or you're
01:40familiar with the platform but what most
01:42people get hung up about is actually how
01:44to use it to grow their business I've
01:46had so many conversations with
01:48entrepreneurs especially online
01:50entrepreneurs who kind of look at me
01:52like oh wow you teach Pinterest for
01:54business how how does that work and I
01:56totally get it because it's unlike all
01:59the other social media platforms it's
02:01less intuitive in that sense because
02:03it's less of a social platform as I'll
02:06explain shortly but nevertheless it is
02:08quite simple to use once you get the
02:11hang of it so what is Pinterest and how
02:13does it actually work now the first
02:15thing I would love for you to take away
02:16from this episode is that Pinterest is
02:19not a social media platform I know mind
02:23um it is actually a visual search engine
02:26and it's a discovery platform so think
02:28of it more more like Google but like a
02:31visual prettier version than Google and
02:34that's exactly how people use Pinterest
02:36they approach it like they do Google the
02:38search engine versus how they would
02:41approach Tick Tock or Instagram or
02:43Facebook they're not on there for the
02:45social element and so the way it works
02:47is that once you log into Pinterest
02:48whether on your phone or on desktop or
02:50whatever device you're using you're
02:52gonna find that it's got a whole bunch
02:53of images which are called pins now pins
02:56are those vertical images that usually
03:00can be yes images but they can also be
03:02videos and what you'll find is that once
03:05you click on them they will usually have
03:09a link that is connected to the image or
03:12the video and once you click on on that
03:14link it will take you to an external
03:17link like a website and so in a very
03:20simple way that's how the platform works
03:22it is a brilliant tool for driving
03:26traffic to your website so if you as a
03:28business us owner create a Pinterest
03:30account and start to put out pins on the
03:33platform what you'll see is that you can
03:35get a ton of traffic if you know what
03:37you're doing because people will start
03:38clicking on your pins if they're
03:40engaging and if they really want to get
03:43what's on the other side of the pin and
03:46there's a process to that then that's
03:48how you find that you'll end up getting
03:50a ton of people clicking over on your
03:52links and heading over to your website
03:53now another thing that people tend to do
03:56with Pinterest is they tend to save
03:58images and saving on Pinterest is
04:01slightly different to say saving a post
04:04that you like on Instagram or say tick
04:06tock saving is quite integral to the
04:10Pinterest algorithm in fact the
04:12Pinterest algorithm ranks saving as the
04:15highest engagement on Pinterest so and
04:18the way people use it is is a lot more
04:21intentional I would say than they would
04:24do on other social media platforms so
04:26it's a very very important part of the
04:28Pinter experience the reason for that is
04:31because the people that use Pinterest
04:33tend to be planners and also creatives
04:36and whenever they're approaching the
04:38platform they are actually going on
04:40there because they want to plan for
04:42something or they want to work on
04:45something they're working towards a
04:46project they're working towards building
04:48a dream that they have so whether it's
04:49redesigning their uh their bedroom or if
04:53it's coming up with a recipe or if they
04:54want to save a product that they saw and
04:57that they really like that's how they
04:59come approaching Pinterest they're not
05:01coming on there to socialize and check
05:05um what their favorite influencers are
05:06doing that's not how it's used and so
05:09saves are really important because when
05:11people see something that they like then
05:13they save it to their board and what a
05:16board is I want you to think about it
05:18like a digital version of like a mood
05:20board you might have in your office or
05:22bedroom where you hang up all these
05:25different pictures and ideas and dreams
05:27that you have like the your your dream
05:29house or the income that you want to
05:30make or a certain goal you want to reach
05:32right so people save these images in
05:35boards so they're a collection of visual
05:37ideas so whether it's for hairstyles or
05:42um maybe gardening or whatever it is
05:45people will have their own boards and
05:47they will save their ideas on these
05:49boards so the way you want to think of
05:51Pinterest is that you've got pins and
05:53you've got boards okay those are the two
05:55main things that people are doing
05:57they're saving their pins to these
05:59boards so that's why saving is really
06:01important now of course that's all well
06:02and good but what you probably want is
06:05people to come and check out your
06:07website you want to drive traffic right
06:09that's the ultimate goal but usually
06:11having a high number of saves is always
06:13going to benefit you because that's what
06:15the algorithm wants and so if you create
06:17content that people are loving and
06:19saving to their boards guess what's
06:21gonna happen the Pinterest algorithm is
06:23going to rank your account and your
06:25content higher which means more people
06:27are going to see and that's how you
06:28actually become viral on Pinterest and
06:30it's way easier to be viral on Pinterest
06:34than almost other social media platforms
06:36now don't worry if people are only
06:39saving your content it's only a matter
06:41of time as long as you do a few things
06:43with your pins to and people know that
06:45they can click on them so you have to
06:47give them a reason to click on them like
06:49using headlines or good text or things
06:51like that but as long as you give them
06:53that reason you will get that traffic so
06:55saving and driving traffic go hand in
06:58hand in Pinterest and so this is why
07:00Pinterest is great for business because
07:01it takes us back to the heart of
07:04business which is providing solutions
07:06for people and meeting their desires and
07:08needs like there is no greater thing
07:11than knowing that you are serving your
07:13customers and your clients and your
07:15people and your audience right and
07:17knowing that they are getting what you
07:19are giving them and they're really happy
07:21with it and that's what Pinterest is all
07:23about and that's how they've positioned
07:25themselves they've positioned themselves
07:26as a positive platform platform where
07:29there is no toxic like social media
07:31culture because you're not going on
07:34there and people aren't going on there
07:36and having to deal with comparison and
07:39shaming and all sorts of like you know
07:42the the cancel culture like all of that
07:44stuff just simply doesn't exist on
07:46Pinterest because it's all about ideas
07:48it's not about people really
07:51um and so that's why I love it it's just
07:53such a positive space But ultimately I
07:56love it because it's quite simple to use
07:57once you get the hang of it and so once
08:00you learn how to get started with it you
08:03can really see great results with
08:05Pinterest okay so I've explained all the
08:07great things about why Pinterest is
08:09great and how it works now let's get
08:11into how you can get started with
08:14Pinterest so I'm going to share with you
08:15six simple steps that you can Implement
08:18right now today so that you can get
08:20started so step number one is once you
08:23decide you want to use Pinterest for
08:25your business whether you have an
08:26account or not I suggest that you first
08:30if you haven't got one and if you
08:32already have one make sure that you
08:34convert your personal account into a
08:36business account okay so the ultimate
08:37goal with step one is you want to set up
08:41once you've done that you're gonna see
08:43that you're also gonna have access to
08:45Pinterest analytics so Pinterest
08:47analytics is really important uh
08:50especially if you're like a Creator or a
08:52business owner and you really want to
08:54take Pinterest seriously and start to
08:56see what's working for you and what's
08:58not because in the analytics you're
08:59going to be able to see what pins are
09:02performing well how your boards are
09:04doing and a whole host of other
09:06information that is really helpful once
09:09you start pinning and getting into the
09:10hang of creating content for Pinterest
09:12because then you'll be able to do more
09:14of what works and stop doing what
09:17doesn't work and the way you can get
09:18started with that is you can set up a
09:20business account by going to the
09:21settings and if you want more
09:23information you can simply go to the
09:25Pinterest website and they have all this
09:27documentation that shows you exactly the
09:30step-by-step process of how to do that
09:31but it's super simple now step number
09:33two is you want to make a decision about
09:35what content are you going to create and
09:38what is your Niche or Niche depending
09:40where you're from go going to be now if
09:43you're a business owner I imagine of
09:45course that you probably have a a
09:48service that you provide or a product
09:50that you sell and so if your ultimate
09:51goal is to sell something or let's say
09:54if you're a content creator but you
09:55maybe have affiliate products or
09:57whatever it is that you sell I want you
10:00to think about the customer or the
10:01client right when they are approaching
10:04your content how are you going to
10:07nurture them and attract them because
10:09people are going on Pinterest they're
10:11searching and discovering they might
10:13need some time to make the decision to
10:16buy from you so as a business owner as a
10:19content creator I wouldn't go in leading
10:21with selling something I would go in
10:23with value and creating value content
10:26let's say you sell gift wrapping paper
10:28as a product-based business what content
10:32can you create for your customers that
10:34they would find helpful so you can talk
10:36about gift wrapping different type of
10:39gift wraps for different seasons and
10:41Holiday days and celebrations but you
10:43can also share like gift guides and talk
10:45about the art of giving and maybe gifts
10:47for him gift for her so you can create
10:50um the main content which is to do with
10:52whatever it is that you want to sell but
10:54you can also create content about things
10:58um what you are selling so for example
11:00you might not sell gifts you might just
11:02sell the gift wrapping paper but
11:04someone who is thinking of buying of
11:06gift wrapping paper would find it really
11:08helpful if you create content about
11:09gifts because they need to have a gift
11:11in order to buy your gift wrap makes
11:14sense so I would start off with that
11:16once you make a decision
11:19um on what it is I want you to write
11:21that down and the more like niched you
11:25are the better because the Pinterest
11:28platform is an SEO based platform which
11:31means it uses search engine optimization
11:34which is another complicated way of
11:36saying keywords right like it just needs
11:38a lot of keywords for the content to be
11:41found and so once you have a platform
11:44that needs keywords you really need to
11:46hone in on those keywords um Pinterest
11:49doesn't like it when people are vague or
11:51when they create lots of different say
11:53boards or pins and I'll talk a bit more
11:55about that in a minute that are
11:57unrelated or don't seem like you know
12:00they're just completely random right so
12:03you it doesn't it makes sense for you as
12:06a business owner to have a hairstyles
12:08board and then a recipes board and then
12:10your gift wrapping guide board and then
12:12some gifts board and then some cats cat
12:15memes board like it's all over the place
12:18right like it's okay if you're using it
12:20for your personal use you could create
12:21whatever board you like but as a
12:23business owner as a content creator you
12:26want to make sure that you're specific
12:27and you're not confusing the algorithm
12:29or your audience because once they check
12:31out your profile they want to know what
12:33are you all about what are you selling
12:35um you don't want to send any mixed
12:37messages or signals so get specific and
12:39decide what your Niche is going to be
12:40step number three is you want to find
12:42the right keywords now you found your
12:44Niche or Niche but you want to find the
12:47keywords that are related to that and
12:49that is really important now I want to
12:51share with you a story I had a client
12:53who was a photographer and she provided
12:55photography services and so she hired me
12:57to help her find out why her Pinterest
13:00account wasn't growing and when we did
13:01an audit the first thing I noticed was
13:03that yes you was using keywords like
13:06words like photography and things like
13:09that but when we actually looked at it
13:11and did the research we found that she
13:13wasn't using any keywords from Pinterest
13:15these were all words that she thought
13:17would come up on the platform like
13:20Instagram hashtags so she didn't do her
13:23homework and she didn't find the
13:24keywords that actually had to do with
13:27her niche in her account which is why
13:29none of her content was going anywhere
13:31and so another thing that I want you to
13:33take away from this is that if you get
13:36everything wrong but you get this one
13:38thing right you'll be fine which is
13:40find the right keywords for your account
13:43for your content for your pins because
13:46without using keywords you are not going
13:48to get the the visibility that you're
13:51looking for people are not going to find
13:53you they won't be able to discover you
13:55because it's keywords are so integral to
13:57the algorithm and how the platform works
14:00and so I helped her out by giving her a
14:02bunch of keywords that she could add in
14:04her pins in her in her boards everywhere
14:06that is relevant for her which had then
14:08helped her account to grow now another
14:11thing I want to say about keywords is
14:13that once you know what your content is
14:16going to be about it is very important
14:18that you do your research on Pinterest
14:20and not just assume that it's going to
14:22be the same as maybe the hashtags you
14:25use on Instagram because you might find
14:27that the messaging and the wording on
14:29different platforms like Instagram or
14:31Tick Tock or Facebook is actually
14:33completely different on Pinterest and
14:34I've seen that time and time again where
14:37people using the same words or the
14:39keywords that they think are going to
14:41work on Pinterest but when you actually
14:42search it nothing comes up and they find
14:45that the word that they're looking for
14:46is worded slightly differently so for
14:49example gift ideas depending on where
14:51your base it could be a presence you
14:53know here in the UK where I'm based
14:55people use the word presence quite a bit
14:58as well so not saying that that's a
15:00keyword on Pinterest but I'm just saying
15:02um these are the things you need to
15:04think about how are they worded exactly
15:06on Pinterest don't make assumptions do
15:08your research and the way you do that is
15:11you simply go on the search bar on
15:13Pinterest and as soon as you start
15:14typing what you're looking for you just
15:16start with the assumptions that you have
15:19um Pinterest actually suggests a list of
15:21keywords underneath as soon as you start
15:24typing exactly how it happens when you
15:26go and do a Google search you know how
15:28the more you type the more keywords
15:29start to show up Pinterest does the same
15:32thing and that's the best way for you to
15:35do your keyword research and that's the
15:36first place I would start and then once
15:39you've figured out a few keywords I
15:41would collect at least maybe 20 to do
15:44with my Niche and put them in like an
15:46Excel spreadsheet somewhere that I can
15:48refer to time and time again so I can
15:50add it in my content so that you're not
15:52having to research every single time you
15:56can get into more details with keywords
15:57but that's where I would start step
15:59number four is once you've got your
16:01keywords now is the time for you to set
16:03up your profile and your account when it
16:06comes to your profile so the first thing
16:08people see when they click on your name
16:10and they see your page there are four
16:12different elements that you need to
16:14consider you have your profile image you
16:17have the cover image you have your
16:19profile name and your profile
16:20description so for your profile image
16:23what you want to do is if let's say
16:24you're a service based business or your
16:26content creator where you're the face of
16:27the brand you want to put in a really
16:29good quality photo in there so that
16:32people can recognize your face and if
16:34it's the same photo you use in different
16:36platforms that's even better so that you
16:38have that consistency across different
16:40platforms and then with the cover image
16:42that's an interesting place where you
16:45can use that space to promote what it is
16:49that you have on offer so for example
16:50what you'll find is that the cover image
16:52is like this big rectangular image that
16:54sits behind your profile image and what
16:57I would do is I would actually create a
16:59graphic for that cover image and I would
17:04promote whatever it is I have on offer
17:05so let's say you are a product based
17:08business if you have a discount for
17:10first-time buyers I would put that there
17:13so that people know or if you have a
17:15time limited offer I would put that
17:18um if you have a free lead Magnet or
17:20something that you're giving for free in
17:23order for people to sign up to your
17:24email list I would promote that there as
17:26well and I would include the link so
17:28that people can see it make sure that
17:30the link is not a complex one like it's
17:32an intuitive one an easy one to remember
17:34as much as possible and then what you
17:37want to do is you want to set up your
17:38profile name so that would be your name
17:40if you're that's your brand name or the
17:42name of your business and you also want
17:45to put in a profile description which
17:47describes The Who and the what and or
17:51who are you as a business and what
17:52services do you provide how do you help
17:54your audience your clients and your
17:57customers so you want to make sure that
17:58you put that in there you can also throw
18:00in a like a link to your web site it's
18:03not clickable in the description but
18:05again if you make it memorable and easy
18:07to read people will remember it and
18:09that's pretty much it when it comes to
18:11setting up your profile now step number
18:13five is you want to set up at least
18:16starting out anyway a minimum of three
18:18to five boards all to do with your Niche
18:21and the keywords that you found and the
18:24best way to think about your boards is
18:25the different types of content that
18:27you're going to create that sit within
18:29your keywords so you're someone that
18:31going back to the gift ideas
18:34example if your whole thing on Pinterest
18:37is sharing gift ideas then maybe your
18:40three to five boards could be on gifts
18:42for him gifts for her you could do
18:44Valentine gifts you could do graduation
18:47gifts you can so you can see there's
18:49different types of content that you can
18:52create and what you want to do is make
18:54sure that you name your boards and give
18:56them a description that describes
18:57exactly what goes in there and then you
19:00can start pinning to these boards which
19:02brings us to to step number six which is
19:04the final step and that is actually
19:06creating the content all about designing
19:09pins now pins are vertical images that
19:13have an aspect ratio of two to three so
19:15they are like these long rectangular
19:16images and you want to make sure that
19:18they're beautiful that they've got great
19:20quality images because it is
19:22um you know Pinterest is a visual
19:24platform so you want to make sure that
19:26your aesthetic is of a good quality but
19:29what you also want to do is you want to
19:31make sure that you put a headline that
19:33converts okay and you want to put that
19:36headline on the image so you want to let
19:38people know that if you click here you
19:41know there is a link behind this image
19:43there is a blog post there is a YouTube
19:44video there is a website there's a sales
19:46page whatever it is you want people to
19:48know that it is a clickable link and it
19:50will take them externally somewhere
19:51where they can find out more once you've
19:53designed your image and you added in a
19:55short like description or headline so
19:58a great tip I'll give you is listicles
20:01do really well on Pinterest like 10 ways
20:04to do something or five different steps
20:07um you know whatever it is that you're
20:09you're teaching or adding value and then
20:11once you've done that you want to add a
20:13pin description so just like Instagram
20:15has captions Pinterest does as well and
20:18there's a character limit so it's you're
20:20not gonna write a whole bunch of text
20:22but just keep it short and simple
20:24describe what's going to happen uh when
20:27people click on the link what are they
20:29going to find out more about on your
20:31website on your YouTube channel wherever
20:33it is that you're linking and a question
20:35that I get a lot is how many pins am I
20:38supposed to pin a day or a week and I
20:42like to respond to that question with
20:44another question which is how much time
20:46do you have and I think it's really
20:49important that you get honest with
20:51yourself and decide how much time you're
20:55um because I've seen too many people use
20:58social media get a whole lot of anxiety
21:00because they have this picture of their
21:01mind of I'm supposed to post three times
21:03a day every day but you have life you
21:07have kids you have a full-time job and
21:09you're starting off with a side hustle
21:10and you just cannot do it in a
21:13sustainable way so I want to ask you
21:14what is sustainable for you and then of
21:16course that depends on how quickly
21:18you're going to grow I genuinely believe
21:21in slow growth is a good thing because
21:23you're going to learn you are going to
21:26make mistakes you are going to figure
21:27things out you're going to figure out
21:29what works and what doesn't work it's a
21:31journey right there's no rush so find
21:34the best Cadence for you and for your
21:37life and try to create pins out of that
21:40but the going advice is about three
21:42times a day now of course that depends
21:44on how much actual content do you have
21:47long form content because Pinterest is
21:49always pointing to a longer version of
21:52your content like a pin is just a
21:54picture or it's a short video so they're
21:57not going to get that much out of it so
21:58it has to point to a longer form of
22:01content so whatever it is that you're
22:04creating if you've got a long form
22:05content you can create different pins
22:07for the same content but the best pins
22:09obviously are always the ones that are
22:12for completely fresh new ideas you could
22:14create more pins for the same kind of
22:16content and try to avoid pinning the
22:18same pin to different boards over and
22:20over again I would only recommend you do
22:21that a few months at a time and as long
22:24as the board is relevant and that is
22:26important because Pinterest back in the
22:27day kinda got spammy because that's how
22:30people would grow quickly they would pin
22:31the same thing to like a hundred boards
22:33and the user experience just started to
22:35get worse and worse and worse so
22:37Pinterest is looking for fresh content
22:38so you could put a fresh spin on content
22:41you've already created or create new
22:42pins for new content makes sense now
22:45I've had experience with Pinterest
22:46marketing for over seven years now so
22:48it's been quite a while and I promise
22:50you that this stuff works and it works
22:53across every Niche every industry it
22:56works okay now I am super excited to see
