00:00 what's going on everybody welcome back
00:01 to death slopes it is 2024 and we wanted
00:04 to kick off this year with something
00:06 special so I spent the last 8 hours
00:08 researching the coding job market and
00:10 that's what we're going to be looking at
00:11 right now so right now we're in q1 of
00:13 2024 and there's a lot going on and
00:16 people are asking questions of where is
00:18 the coding job market going and I'm here
00:20 to provide some relief to aspiring
00:23 programmers and if you're wondering if
00:24 you should learn how to code in 2024 if
00:26 it's even still a great field to get
00:28 into so a lot happened in 2023 and
00:31 that's no doubt so let's take a look
00:32 first at what people are saying about
00:34 2024 if we look on Reddit here I got
00:36 laid off back in May with about 1 year
00:39 and 8th month experience I haven't been
00:41 able to land anything and I did get some
00:43 interviews But ultimately got rejected
00:46 and now I barely get interviews applying
00:48 to jobs fills me with so much dread
00:50 because all of the rejection is starting
00:52 to impact myself steam I'm at the point
00:55 where I'm literally open to any Office
00:57 corporate job just so I can have a
00:59 salary and use my degree somewhat people
01:02 asking questions like Will the Market be
01:03 back anytime soon I was laid off earlier
01:06 this year with no luck I've been living
01:08 by myself for a minute in hopes that if
01:10 the job Market opens for entry-level job
01:13 I can return to work easily so let's
01:16 take a look at what happened in 2023 so
01:18 in 2023 these were the job postings on
01:22 indeed in the US so we can look right
01:24 here nothing was going on too crazy in
01:26 2020 and in 2021 going into 202 2 we had
01:30 a major spike of job postings on indeed
01:34 there were a lot of job openings and the
01:37 market was high high high programming
01:40 was a very in demand field we started to
01:42 see this drop off around June to
01:44 December of 2022 and in 2023 things look
01:48 like they started to just fizzle down
01:50 slower and slower so the question was
01:52 was there a tech hiring bubble and yes
01:54 if we look at jobs open compared to
01:56 software development jobs there's a big
01:58 gap comparison they put here is it
02:00 operations and help desk versus software
02:02 development jobs and let's look at this
02:04 Gap look at this Gap software
02:07 development was in high demand and then
02:09 closer towards the end of the year it
02:11 started to fizzle out the graph shows
02:14 overall level of job postings declined
02:16 during the onset of the covid-19
02:18 pandemic bouncing back to pre pandemic
02:21 levels 12 months later soon after and
02:23 while help wanted ads for it and
02:25 operation help the Staffing remain
02:27 depressed the level of job postings in
02:29 software develop started to quickly
02:31 outpace the rising National Trend ads
02:34 for Designing Computer Applications or
02:36 programs more than doubled their
02:38 February 2020 level so it's clear that
02:42 we had a lot a lot a lot of jobs open
02:45 and the best part about that was there
02:47 were high paying jobs web developers
02:49 were getting paid around
02:51 $89,000 a year for an average salary now
02:54 that's a lot of money with top paying
02:58 $165,000 a year so the field was
03:01 crushing it around 2022 and 2023 so
03:04 what's happening now why are we seeing
03:06 this Decline and what's coming next so
03:09 if you look at who was affected by a lot
03:11 of the layoffs in 2023 we can clearly
03:14 see that a lot of big tech companies let
03:17 employees go there was massive layoffs
03:20 in 2023 let's just remember what
03:22 happened with Twitter Facebook meta all
03:25 of those things so the question was who
03:27 was affected 20 7% of layoffs in Tech
03:32 related to HR and talent sourcing while
03:35 22% of layoffs were in software
03:37 engineering if we just take a look at
03:38 this graph here we can see that software
03:40 engineering did take a big hit when it
03:42 came to layoffs nearly half of those
03:44 impacted in the layoffs were around the
03:46 30 to 40 age range and most effective
03:49 were the 20 to 30 now what this tells us
03:51 was it was a lot of Junior positions a
03:53 lot of entry-level job positions that
03:56 were affected by this now the aftermath
03:59 who is in on the job market a worrying
04:01 statistic in our Tech layoff research is
04:03 that just over 10% of the workers in our
04:06 sample have found new job as of January
04:09 2023 the rest are still on the job
04:12 market competing from the same positions
04:14 during hiring freezes in continuing
04:16 layoffs a lot of the Fang companies
04:18 really laid off a lot of people and this
04:21 trickled downward to a lot of the
04:23 smaller companies people realize that
04:24 they didn't need as many developers to
04:27 do certain things the layoffs May
04:28 partially be consequence of company's
04:30 plans to invest in Ai and automation now
04:34 there I'm going to get into some of the
04:35 things that you need to keep in mind if
04:37 you're struggling to look for a job or
04:38 if you're looking for a job or if you
04:40 think coding is even a programming field
04:42 you want to get into so just stay tuned
04:43 for those but let's go ahead and take a
04:45 look at how AI is affecting the job
04:47 market by checking out the stack
04:49 Overflow developer survey now this is
04:51 what programmers have to say about Ai
04:54 and if you guys want to check out this
04:55 survey and any of the information it's
04:57 all going to be in the link down below
04:59 so be sure to check it out so 70% of all
05:01 respondents are using and planning to
05:03 use AI Tools in their development
05:05 process this year those learning to code
05:07 will be more likely than professional
05:08 developers to use AI tools so the the
05:11 general idea is that AI is going to be a
05:14 part of programming there's no doubt
05:15 about that we've seen that with chat gbt
05:17 we've seen that with automation we've
05:19 seen that with I don't know if you guys
05:20 have gone into your code and tried using
05:22 chat gbt to write your code it's a fun
05:25 process but it's also very worrisome for
05:27 some people now we made an entire video
05:29 about Ai and programming I'd recommend
05:32 checking that out it's going to be right
05:33 here cuz we're not going to go too in
05:36 depth but that video goes really in-
05:37 depth on AI and its effects on the
05:39 programming industry but what I do want
05:41 to look at is the statistics behind AI a
05:45 lot of people are very favorable to
05:46 using AI but what are they using it for
05:48 they're using it to increase
05:50 productivity and a lot of people don't
05:52 highly trust AI now this kind of goes
05:55 into the accuracy of AI odds are it's
05:58 going to write bad code like 60 70% of
06:00 the time and that's not really a
06:02 trustworthy thing but what a lot of
06:04 people are using is for AI to help write
06:06 their code debug and get help this
06:09 doesn't mean AI is going to take over
06:10 programming jobs this means that it's
06:12 going to serve as a tool for programmers
06:14 to use with in their programming job the
06:16 analogy we like to use is farming back
06:19 in the day you had hundreds of people
06:20 working on a farm until you invented
06:22 tractors now you didn't need as many
06:24 people working on a farm because you had
06:25 a tractor so take that same concept and
06:28 apply it to what's going with AI and
06:30 programming AI is going to be your tool
06:32 so we're not going to need as many
06:33 developers to do the small things but we
06:36 are going to need developers what's
06:38 going on now what's going on now with
06:40 2024 what is the job market looking at
06:43 now now if we look at the job market
06:44 here it's been stable from February 2023
06:47 to now now that's a good sign that's a
06:49 good sign what we don't want to see is a
06:50 decline like we saw in May to February
06:53 what we want to see is that stability
06:55 and growth and if we take a look at the
06:57 Bureau of Labor Statistics this is where
06:59 we get a lot more information of what's
07:01 to come and what people are projecting
07:03 the job outlook to look like overall
07:06 employment of software developers
07:07 quality assurance analysis and testers
07:09 projected to grow from 25% from 2022 to
07:13 2032 much faster than the average for
07:16 all occupations there are about
07:18 153,000 openings for software developers
07:21 each year on average over the decade
07:24 many of those openings are expected to
07:26 result from the need to replace workers
07:28 who transfer to different occupations or
07:30 exit the labor workforce increased
07:32 demand for software developers will send
07:35 from the continued expansion of software
07:37 development for artificial intelligence
07:39 internet of things and other automation
07:42 applications this is what we want to see
07:44 this is the exciting part employment
07:46 2022 1 M 1.7 million employment
07:49 projected in 2032 2.2 million these are
07:52 good signs this is what we want to see
07:54 and while we're in this little phase
07:56 right now where everything seems to be
07:57 stable this gives us some some hope that
08:00 in the future we're going to be seeing a
08:02 lot more growth now to answer the
08:04 question of should you learn how to code
08:06 in 2024 I would say the answer is yes
08:08 the answer is yes just because we're
08:10 seeing stability and we're not seeing an
08:12 increase and influx in the 2024 job
08:14 market doesn't mean you shouldn't take
08:16 on a skill like programming but there
08:18 are some key things to keep in mind
08:20 employers are no longer looking for just
08:22 any developer out there you need to have
08:24 the right skills and the right skill set
08:26 to bring value to the team this means
08:28 having more than just technical skills
08:30 and this is where a lot of people mess
08:31 up on they learn one or two languages
08:33 they apply for a job and they think that
08:35 they're just going to get in no no no no
08:36 no no we have to stop that if you want
08:38 to get a job in 2024 you need to be
08:40 prioritizing both the soft skills and
08:43 the technical skills and when it comes
08:44 to the technical side of things you need
08:46 to be able to write clean and effective
08:47 code not subpar code you need to
08:50 understand the principles that can help
08:52 make your code scalable easy to maintain
08:55 and easily adjustable you also need to
08:57 be a good Problem Solver and I don't
08:59 mean that as like a cliche as learn how
09:00 to solve problems I mean that
09:02 legitimately how do you sit back look at
09:04 a project and say okay I need to do this
09:07 to make this work I need to make sure
09:08 this is able to be accessed by my entire
09:10 team I need to be able to look at this
09:12 holistically and break it down into
09:14 smaller pieces how do you create and
09:16 build cool on a professional level
09:19 if you're to survive in the 2024 job
09:21 market and onward you need to be able to
09:23 actually hone in on your programming
09:25 skills additionally as people are saying
09:28 on Reddit you have hundreds of people
09:29 that are competing for the jobs how do
09:31 you stand out this is all about your
09:33 resume and all about are you prepared
09:35 for the technical interviews are you
09:36 prepared to create something that people
09:38 can look at and say okay this is the guy
09:40 I want on my team a good way to do this
09:42 is something we do on death slopes it's
09:44 part of our earn why you learn
09:45 curriculum we help you land freelance
09:47 projects to help put on your resume in
09:50 order to help leverage you into jobs I
09:52 want you to think about what employers
09:53 are seeing when they're looking for
09:55 software developers they're seeing an
09:56 influx of people applying for their jobs
09:59 with subpar coding skills as well as
10:03 computer science degrees a piece of
10:04 paper certificates udm certificates all
10:07 of these things that are just fluff
10:08 pieces this this isn't going to stand
10:10 you out from the crowd how can you show
10:12 a potential employer hey you want me on
10:14 your team because I can actually provide
10:17 value and that's where freelance
10:18 projects come in you can showcase your
10:20 work you can say hey look I did five
10:22 freelance projects that I was actually
10:24 paid to do people have paid me for my
10:26 work and something I also saw on Reddit
10:29 that this guy hit it on the nail here
10:31 how many jobs are you applying to how
10:33 picky are you about the jobs you're
10:35 applying to what is your response rate
10:37 on application so this guy said usually
10:39 around 10 to 20 a week I get maybe one
10:42 first round interview a week if I'm
10:43 lucky but I have been rejected after the
10:46 initial call and I love what he said
10:47 that slow you should be hitting that per
10:49 day this is the thing you cannot
10:51 complain about the coding job market
10:53 being difficult if you're not putting in
10:55 the time and effort that you need to be
10:57 if you're just sending one the the same
10:59 copy and paste resume to everyone and
11:01 you're not tailoring it for what that
11:03 business needs of course you're not
11:04 going to be able to get that job same
11:06 thing applies for if you're only sending
11:08 10 to 20 job applications a week you
11:10 need to be sending 10 to 20 job
11:12 applications a day Landing a job and
11:15 2024 is not about sending out a copy and
11:17 paste resume you need to be able to
11:19 stand out from the crowd so to recap on
11:22 everything people are worried about
11:23 software development jobs the job market
11:25 has declined as of M as of June 202 2 to
11:29 February of 2023 but it has remained at
11:32 a steady Pace since then with a subtle
11:35 incline a subtle incline not not almost
11:38 not even worth noting but it is there a
11:40 subtle incline as we can see growth
11:42 11.9% from low programming is still one
11:46 of the top paying jobs with starting
11:48 salaries sitting at $889,000 per year
11:51 and top paying salaries at
11:53 $165,000 per year this is specifically
11:55 for web development but that's what a
11:56 lot of people are looking for when
11:58 they're getting into coding there were
12:00 massive layoffs in 2023 we know that for
12:02 a fact we've seen the news we've seen
12:04 everything with Twitter with meta and
12:06 we've seen a lot of the affected
12:07 positions AI is a part of that effect
12:10 and people are finding that they're
12:11 going to be using AI to help write their
12:14 code help debug and get help and just
12:16 overall to help improve their experience
12:19 AI is going to be used as a tool it's
12:21 not going to be used as a replacement
12:23 with that being said we then dive into
12:25 it is not a time to write subpar code
12:27 you need to be able to write code that
12:28 is scalable easy to maintain and
12:31 interchangeable you need to be able to
12:32 write code that works well within a team
12:34 and you yourself need to have the soft
12:36 skills to work well with within a team
12:38 that means you have the problem solving
12:40 skills the teamwork skills the
12:42 communication skills there's no more
12:44 lone wolfing in programming and lastly
12:47 to bring everyone some ease according to
12:49 the Bureau of Labor Statistics there is
12:51 a projected growth of 25% from 2022 to
12:55 2032 much faster than the average of all
12:58 occup occupation so guys
13:00 all-encompassing programming jobs are
13:03 still there programming jobs are still
13:05 there you just have to fight a little
13:06 bit harder for them so take this
13:08 information digest everything give
13:10 yourself some ease and just relax relax
13:13 programming jobs aren't going anywhere
13:15 AI isn't going to come take everyone's
13:17 job you're going to be fine programmers
13:20 are going to be fine and if you're
13:21 interested in learning how to code and
13:23 you want to dive into coding and you're
13:25 questioning man I don't know jobs are
13:26 looking fuzzy cut that out of your mind
13:29 take the leap learn the skill because at
13:31 the end of the day if you do everything
13:32 right there's going to be a job out
13:34 there for you that's it for now
13:36 everybody thank you guys so much for

13:44 think I want to know what you guys think
13:46 about the coding job market your
13:47 experiences with it everything I just
13:49 said in this video thank you guys so
13:51 much and I can't wait to see you guys in
13:53 the next video peace
