00:00Follow Actions are available
in Session view.
00:02They're an automated way of triggering clips,
so that instead of looping or stopping
00:06they can trigger another
clip on the same track.
00:15They can be as simple as playing the next
clip after a fixed amount of time
00:19kind of like a mini DJ set, or as complex as
creating infinitely revolving drum grooves
00:24or glitch effects with
extreme randomization.
00:32They can be used in a live performance or in the
studio as interesting sound design tools.
00:38In this video, I'll give you an
overview of Follow Actions
00:41and demo a few of my
favourite ways to use them.
00:48In this first example, let's keep things
simple and just use two clips.
00:52These are drum loops playing
different patterns.
00:55To reveal Follow Actions you
look down in Clip view
00:58and click the triangle to show
the clip launch settings.
01:01Then you can enable them by pressing the
Follow Actions button so it turns yellow.
01:06Or, if you're into keyboard shortcuts,
you can select one or more clips
01:10 and then press the Shift and Return keys to
enable Follow Actions on all the selected clips.
01:16When a clip has a Follow Action enabled,
you'll see the Clip Launch button changes style
01:21and the next clip that's going
to be triggered will flash.
01:30Now that we've got a feel for
how this function works,
01:32let's amp things up and take a
look at some more advanced uses.
01:37We've got a track here with a selection of different drum
loops on it with quite a bit of variation between them.
01:45Let's explore some of the
ways they could be triggered.
01:49Follow Actions are divided into Follow
Action A and Follow Action B,
01:53so you can introduce some randomization with the
Follow Action Chance slider if you want.
01:58For now, we're just going to go with the
default behaviour of using 100% Follow Action A.
02:05The choices you have
are pretty intuitive.
02:09You can have the clip stop.
02:23Play the previous or next clips.
02:38And play the first or last
clips in the sequence.
02:51Any, will randomly select the next clip
to play from the entire group
02:55of clips on the track with Follow Actions engaged.
This includes replaying the current clip.
03:01Other, will play any other clip
at random on the track.
03:08While Jump, allows you to select a specific
clip to play next by selecting the number
03:13of the clip you want to trigger.
03:16It's important to note that clips will always
launch according to their launch mode and quantisation.
03:22Quantisation is Global by default,
which you can change up here,
03:27but you can set individual quantisation on clips for
interesting stutter effects when in Repeat mode.
03:37These clips all have different repeat
quantisations and that's particularly useful
03:41when using a MIDI controller
or keyboard mapping.
03:54Now, let's take a look at Linked and
Unlinked Follow Actions.
03:58An unlinked Action will play the clip
for a specified Follow Action time
04:02and then carry out the next chosen Action.
04:11When you use Linked mode, it will play
the clip for the full length set by the loop's rate
04:15and then loop it the number of times you can
set in the Follow Actions multiplier parameter
04:19before triggering the next clip.
04:26In our next example, we'll take a
look at a musical loop.
04:33There's a series of clips all playing the
same pattern but with different synth sounds.
04:38I want to preserve the pattern
but switch up these sounds.
04:48When using a regular Follow Action,
the next clip starts at the beginning.
04:52However, in this case, I want the next clip
to come out where the first one left off.
04:57This is where Legato mode is
useful and does just that.
05:16Now let's use a glitch example.
05:19You can use Randomization to divide
between Follow Action A and Follow Action B.
05:23Depending on the position of the
Follow Action Chance parameter.
05:28This allows you to create an evolving sequence
that will avoid repetitions and stay sounding fresh.
05:43If you want to take things to the next level,
you can also use Follow Actions on entire scenes.
06:10This gives you a whole new world of creative
possibilities for DJ sets and live performances.
