00:02this video I'm going to be answering
00:04your questions that you had about the
00:06music industry making songs sound design
00:10anything that you ask me on the amas
00:13that I'm doing on Instagram I've been
00:15posting these to my stories just uh
00:18trying to get people to uh provide me
00:20any questions they had so I can answer
00:21them on my Instagram and then just
00:23providing answers written answers I
00:25wanted to kind of break them down a bit
00:27more in depth in this video and put it
00:29on to YouTube also if you do want to see
00:32some of these that I didn't answer I'm
00:33going to try to get through the ones I
00:35thought were probably the most useful in
00:36this video but if you do want to see
00:39kind of all them I'll put them in like a
00:41there's like a highlights reel on the uh
00:44Instagram page on my Instagram page
00:46there's like a little highlight box
00:47where you can put stories that you
00:50posted in the past so you can kind of
00:52see a lot of the answers that I put in
00:54uh to these questions that you guys
00:56asked so hopefully in this video you
00:59will learn something about making music
01:02or maybe something about the music
01:04industry that you didn't know before and
01:06even if you just kind of get like one
01:08little thing out of this video that is
01:10useful then I think it will be worth it
01:12so I'm going to be like just like kind
01:14of reading through these off my phone
01:16this is going to be mainly like try to
01:20keep this relatively unedited I'll
01:21probably edit a few things in here as
01:23I'm going through these questions um but
01:26try to keep this um a bit more free
01:30flowing and I'll also try to put up the
01:33an the questions on the screen I'll
01:35figure out how to do that from uh the
01:37screenshots that I took so let's go
01:40ahead and just jump right into it advice
01:42on deciding whether to move on from a
01:44track or finish it so this is kind of a
01:48hard one because as you know most of the
01:51time you might be always moving onto
01:55another track instead of finishing it
01:56and if that is your problem then maybe
01:59it's time for you to decide to finish a
02:01track for once because if you're always
02:04coming up with some idea maybe a loop or
02:06a short little demo and then just losing
02:09excitement uh about the track a few days
02:13after it and then moving on to the next
02:14one then that is kind of probably your
02:16biggest problem that you need to fix so
02:21um there's also this thing where maybe
02:23you think that the track isn't good
02:25enough and you want to kind of move on
02:27to a better idea but I'll kind of tell
02:30you what I have found that is useful
02:33something that I have done when I am
02:36making tracks is that I'll usually
02:38schedule like a week or so where every
02:41night of the week I am making a song
02:45idea so I'm always going to be making a
02:47new song idea so let's say I start on
02:49Monday and I decide Monday through
02:52Friday every nights uh at 8:00 for 2 or
02:564 hours or whatever I'm going to make a
02:59song idea and then at the end of the
03:01night I'm just going to save my session
03:03export that audio doesn't matter how far
03:05I got in the song idea and then put it
03:07into a folder so I'll do that for Monday
03:10Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday for 5
03:11days put all five of these songs into a
03:13folder it doesn't matter if they were
03:15good or bad or how far I got maybe I
03:18didn't get very far uh in one idea or
03:20maybe I didn't really like it but I just
03:21I kind of export all the audio files of
03:25the tracks put them into a folder then
03:27at the end of the week I have these five
03:29ideas
03:30and then I'll listen to the ideas and
03:32then I'll decide okay this one's bad
03:34this one's bad this one's bad but maybe
03:36there's one or two of these songs where
03:37I'm like okay these have potential so
03:40this is kind of like the next morning
03:41test where you make a song the next
03:44morning uh you realize it like maybe as
03:48you're making it you're like oh this is
03:49awesome and then the next morning you're
03:50like oh this kind of sucks well this is
03:51like the next morning test but we're
03:52doing it at the end of the week where
03:54you're going through all five of these
03:55songs and you're deciding okay let's
03:58pick out one of these songs that I think
04:00is actually good and I still have
04:01excitement about it and if there are
04:03multiple uh of these songs that you have
04:05excitement about still then that's a
04:07good sign and maybe you want to continue
04:10with um more than one of these songs but
04:12let's say you make five of these
04:15demos then at the end of the week you
04:17have one that you're like this is the
04:19one that I want to continue and finish
04:21then you kind of put that into another
04:23folder where it's kind of like your
04:25works and progress folder and then maybe
04:27you do this for another week where you
04:28make another five ideas and then uh you
04:31decide okay here's the second song I'm
04:33going to put this one into my Works in
04:34progress and then after that you shift
04:36your focus instead of to uh generating
04:39these ideas these uh from scratch then
04:41you shift your focus into working on
04:44these one or two songs for the next
04:46couple weeks and then you just finish
04:49those songs like you you know that you
04:50had the initial excitement about them
04:52you had the excitement after you listen
04:53to them them after week so you have to
04:55figure out some way to finish them and
04:57and the problem with a lot of people is
04:59that they'll
05:00uh and I assume that the person asking
05:02this question is that they uh probably
05:06move on from the tracks after they kind
05:08of get tired of them so I think this is
05:10kind of like a way that you can
05:12eliminate um all those ideas into like
05:14one or two song uh track ideas and then
05:17try to finish them um so that's kind of
05:19like what I do this question is how do
05:23you come up with content ideas
05:24additionally unrelated but would you
05:26ever try to recreate dubstep so let me
05:28just kind of answer the dubstep question
05:30I don't really Listen to Too Much
05:32dubstep it's not super popular um as far
05:35as like people don't really ask me to
05:37remake dubstep songs so it's really hard
05:40for me to kind of go into that and I
05:42think it's probably one of the more
05:44complex genres that you could pick for
05:46sound design so I don't really um know
05:48if I uh have any real reason to to try
05:52it yet um now for how do I come up with
05:56content ideas so if we're talking about
06:00um things like me trying to figure out
06:03what songs to to remake like which which
06:07uh which sounds from which songs to
06:08remake I'll usually go on to bport look
06:10at the top 10 bport tracks and then
06:13figure out which one of those songs I
06:14can remake sounds from a lot of times
06:17the tracks on the top bport might not
06:20have something that I can remake like a
06:23lot of times the the house songs on that
06:25top E port tra uh uh list they're might
06:29just have like a bass and and some or
06:32some natural instruments that I can't
06:33really like remake a syn sound from so
06:35I'll usually start there and then I'll
06:37also go to like new music Friday see if
06:39anybody released any new tracks this
06:41week that are interesting that are kind
06:43of like more geared toward the dance
06:45genre and then after I kind of go
06:47through that then I'll go to to any like
06:50the tech house operator playlist on
06:52Spotify I'll go to that playlist and see
06:54if there's any new tracks on there that
06:55they added and that's kind of like how I
06:56come up with ideas for which songs to
06:59pick and also I'll go through the
07:01comments of people seeing what they
07:03comment and a lot of times unfortunately
07:06the comments are from obscure songs that
07:08wouldn't really make sense for me to to
07:11remake but if it's a comment that I see
07:13other people are liking or if it's a
07:15comment where they're asking for for me
07:18to remake a song that came out within
07:20like a month or so then I'll I'll
07:22probably be more likely to remake that
07:24so that's kind of what I do for doing
07:26the um when I'm looking for a sound to
07:29remake but for other content like if I'm
07:32doing trying to come up with some
07:33Ableton related piece of content then
07:37that's just a lot of like I I'll open up
07:39Ableton and just see if there's anything
07:40that I any ideas that I can come up with
07:42and a lot of it has to do with like just
07:45committing to a schedule like I'll put
07:47on my calendar like today I have to post
07:49something I'll have to post a Tik Tok or
07:51post a video and just committing to a
07:54schedule of putting out content I think
07:56will help you come up with ideas so
07:59uh committing to putting out the video
08:02first and then deciding on the content
08:05second is kind of what you have to do
08:07now because it's a lot about the volume
08:11of videos that you put out and also the
08:13consistency like maintain some type of
08:15consistency cuz if I come up with an
08:18idea and I'm like uh this idea isn't
08:20that good then I might not post a video
08:23uh it's kind of
08:25better to post a video that is a an idea
08:30where you're kind of like unsure about
08:32you think like might not be a great idea
08:34because you can't really predict how
08:36people are going to respond to it either
08:38it might be an idea that you think isn't
08:39very good and it's like well I have to
08:43post something today so I'm just going
08:44to do this idea and then maybe the video
08:46actually does well so I think it's kind
08:48of like for me I try to commit
08:49to uh doing three to five short videos a
08:53week and then one YouTube video a week
08:55and then maintain that consistency helps
08:58me helps push me to come up with with
08:59content ideas so this question is what
09:02do you recommend doing to help with the
09:04music production consistency grind now I
09:07assume that
09:08this means that let's assume most people
09:13are not making money full-time off of
09:17music production so I think a lot of
09:20people have to work a day job I think
09:22that's totally fine that's kind of what
09:23I've done uh for most of my life until
09:27only recently like only about a year AG
09:29go uh but if you have to work a day job
09:33I would
09:34say to find something that's really easy
09:37and isn't so mentally stimulating that
09:40by the end of the day you're so
09:41exhausted that you can't work on music
09:44anymore I think that a lot of people uh
09:47and I think they think that I'm going to
09:50go into a service job and wait tables or
09:54drive or do delivery and it's like
09:56you're constantly physically working
09:59doing that stuff and by the end of the
10:01day you're just like physically and
10:02mentally exhausted so I almost would say
10:05find like if you have to find a day job
10:07like find some easy 9 to-5 job where you
10:10sit in like an air conditioned office
10:12all day so that you're just so like
10:14hungry after work to kind of get into
10:18making music and producing music cuz
10:21even if it's like you're sort of making
10:23money on uh music production or like
10:26you're trying to do it as an artist it's
10:28really hard
10:29to be motivated if you're spending all
10:32that time uh all day like working some
10:36kind of job but I think if it's
10:38something where you're just sitting down
10:39at at a desk it's a lot easier to be
10:41motivated I think that's that's what I
10:43did I worked at uh as an assistant for a
10:46while like at a law firm and it was just
10:49like I was I knew that every day I was
10:51there by 9:00 and out by 5:00 p.m. and
10:53then after that it was like I could just
10:55focus on music all the time but I think
10:58also like if you're doing a service job
10:59you might have a different schedule and
11:01it just kind of messes up everything
11:03it's hard to maintain some type of
11:04consistency when it's like you don't
11:06know when you're working or like you
11:09don't know how long a shift is going to
11:10be and the pay probably isn't that great
11:13so I would actually would would if you
11:15can avoid it try to avoid getting a
11:16service job but find some kind of desk
11:18job that is kind of low mental energy
11:21like an assistant job um and then when
11:23you get to making your music so a lot of
11:26people will say like you'll see videos
11:28where it's like my 9 to5 is this and
11:31then my 5 to9 is this like your 5 to9 is
11:34your kind of other side hustle job I
11:37think you really have to to treat your
11:39side hustle job like a real job if you
11:43think about and I got this from Steven
11:45pressfield had a book that was called
11:49the uh Art of War no the war of artart
11:53he kind of flipped it so it's called The
11:54War of Art and I think if you read that
11:56book it'll change the way that you think
11:59about about creative work because one of
12:01the things I took away from it that was
12:04important was that if you treat your
12:08creative work like a real job then
12:13you'll be more successful at your
12:15creative work a lot of people come home
12:18they're tired and they make the excuse
12:19well I'm too tired I I'll work on it
12:21tomorrow but you're essentially not
12:23giving your creative work the amount of
12:24like respect that it deserved cuz if you
12:27don't show up to do your day job then
12:30you'll get fired so you if you don't
12:33show up to your creative work you have
12:34to assume like uh you could get fired
12:37like just kind of treat it like a real
12:40job so show up to do your creative work
12:43uh no matter how tired you are no matter
12:45like what's going on you just have to
12:46like show up and do the work so at like
12:48what I what I used to
12:50do um after work cuz I was working till
12:539 till like 5:00
12:54p.m. is I would set a reminder on my
12:58phone that would go off at like 8:00
12:59p.m. and then I knew that no matter what
13:02happened I would had to be at my desk at
13:038:00 p.m. to work on music for like 2
13:06hours or however many hours I could get
13:08in that night and that was like a time
13:10for me where it's like I knew that by
13:135:00 p.m. I would be home I would be
13:15able to eat dinner I would be able to
13:17like work out get everything else I
13:19needed to get done and and by 8 so that
13:22by 8:00 P.M I had nothing else to do I
13:24could just like focus on focus on that
13:27creative work also what you can do is
13:29and this is what I did is I would do
13:31something where I would at 8:00 I would
13:33reward myself so you can kind of create
13:36some kind of pavlovian response for
13:37yourself to to maintain this consistency
13:40of doing your creative work so like if
13:42you set a time every night then when you
13:45sit down then you can reward yourself
13:47with something I used to I drink wine a
13:49lot so I would pour myself a glass of
13:51wine at 8:00 and that would be my reward
13:53and maybe have some like chocolate or
13:55something so that's how I would kind of
13:59reward myself and get myself more
14:01motivated to sit down and do the work
14:03and be more consistent about it every
14:05day this question is how can I be more
14:08creative with
14:10sounds I think if you experiment with
14:15samples it's it's a lot easier to
14:17manipulate samples and then just
14:20constantly rebounce re-edit those
14:23samples like you could start with a
14:25simple
14:26vocal like one shot or a melody
14:29chop that up alter it using some effects
14:34Distortion Reverb print it to audio slow
14:37it down stretch it out chop it up put it
14:39into a sampler do all kinds of things
14:42with it create a Melody out of it like
14:44once you start with this uh I think just
14:47sitting down and spending a session
14:50where you're like I'm going to spend
14:52these next two hours not working on a
14:54song but I'm going to spend these next
14:55two hours just manipulating sounds and
14:58just just make a whole session out of it
15:00where you're just being creative with
15:03the uh like some samples or maybe some
15:07synth sounds and you're not really
15:10having just try not to have any
15:12expectations for what you're um what the
15:14end result is because it's like you're
15:18just you're just trying to have fun and
15:20be creative you're not really trying to
15:22like make a song or anything in this
15:24session and then what you can do is you
15:27can like if you make a sound is just
15:29save that as a one shot or like a loop
15:32or something and then put it into your
15:34sample folder create a sample folder of
15:37your own of your own samples if you
15:39don't have one already and then just
15:42spend that two hours making some cool
15:44sounds and then just save them away and
15:46then kind of do this periodically these
15:49sessions I'm calling them sessions
15:51because it's like setting this time
15:53period by yourself to to just get into
15:56Aon or whatever your dot is and then
15:58kind of experim with sounds and then
16:01just always save and Export the audio at
16:03the end of it like whatever you make
16:04just export it put into a folder and
16:06then uh hopefully like you'll just kind
16:09of collect all these Unique Sounds that
16:12you made and then when you are going to
16:15create your own music your own songs or
16:18your own tracks you'll have a cool
16:20selection of song of sounds that you
16:22made that are unique and then you can
16:23use them in your songs and then that
16:25will help make your songs more unique
16:28this question is when or how do you know
16:30when your music is good enough to be
16:33released well the answer is I don't
16:37think you ever really know I don't think
16:39every anyone ever really
16:40knows there's this quote I I say this
16:43quote a lot it's attributed to Leonardo
16:46da
16:47Vinci and he says art is never finished
16:50only
16:52abandoned which means like you just have
16:55to at some point abandon your art and
16:58really it to the world because you could
17:00spend a whole lifetime
17:02tweaking sounds in the song or mixing
17:06the song I think that you really just
17:10have to let it go and then move on to
17:12the next uh
17:15song one thing I put in here that I
17:17liked in this answer was your 80% is
17:21someone else's
17:23100% because when let's say You release
17:27a song and you're not super happy with
17:28like the mix down the first time that
17:31somebody hears that song They're either
17:34going to like it or they're not going to
17:36like it and they're not going to be
17:37thinking about like if they like it it's
17:40uh if they don't like it it's not going
17:42to be because of like the mix it's
17:45they're just going to be have there some
17:46other reasons why they don't like it but
17:48if they do like it it's not going to be
17:51because of the mix either it's going to
17:52be something with how it sounds that
17:56like touch them that they uh really
17:59reacted to positively like you can't
18:01really explain why people like a song or
18:04don't like a song um so most of the time
18:08when we are uh thinking about whether
18:12the song is good enough to be released
18:14it's always
18:15like things that we don't really have
18:17control over that we think that we do
18:21have control over that if I just do this
18:25to the vocal if I just do this to the
18:27drums if I just change this in the song
18:31then it will like all of a sudden make
18:33people like it more I think that um this
18:37is why
18:39also sometimes like the demos of songs
18:41can become the Viral Song That Everyone
18:45likes because if there is some kind of
18:49uh bones to this song that everybody
18:52that like that everyone reacts to
18:54positively then then that is really all
18:57that matters so you don't really know
18:59you can't really predict this stuff I
19:00think you just have to set a deadline
19:03like a hard deadline let's say you're
19:05working on a
19:06song and you want to release it but you
19:10don't know like oh is this good enough
19:12then just say no matter what happens I'm
19:14going to put the song out in like four
19:16weeks and then commit to that deadline
19:19put the song out if people like it great
19:21if they don't like it put out another
19:23song um you can't it's you can't really
19:26like uh you can't really predict how
19:30people are going to respond to it this
19:32one says how do you find good vocals as
19:34a beginner that doesn't want to spend
19:36money
19:38well this was uh this one's difficult
19:42because even like even if you're paying
19:44for splice you're technically spending
19:46money every month to get
19:48vocals the only way that I can think of
19:51uh of getting vocals without having to
19:54spend money is just to make remixes of
19:57like bootleg remixes and that's a pretty
19:59popular thing common thing for DJs to do
20:01is just find the AC capella of a popular
20:04song make a remix of it and then post it
20:06to SoundCloud or YouTube I think
20:09SoundCloud lately they're trying to do a
20:11push to come back I feel like I've been
20:13talking to some DJs that have been
20:14saying that SoundCloud is coming back so
20:16you can definitely try to post more of
20:18your stuff to SoundCloud like find some
20:22find some AC capella of a popular song
20:24or even just put the song into one of
20:28those stem separation platforms like la.
20:32a is what I use and then just get the
20:34vocals out of that and then just remix
20:36it and then that's as a beginner that's
20:39probably the best way to really improve
20:42your production is just do a lot of
20:44those and put a lot of remixes out
20:47commit to some kind of schedule where
20:48you're putting out remixes maybe like
20:51once a month or if you can do it even
20:53faster than that like once every two
20:55weeks if you can get on some kind of
20:56schedule where you're putting out these
20:57bootleg remix is once a uh once every
21:01two weeks once once a month I think that
21:03can like really help you and then once
21:05you kind of build
21:07up your following cuz assuming you're a
21:10beginner you probably don't have a a
21:11following once you build up a following
21:15uh as you improve your Productions let's
21:17say people start finding out about your
21:19music then it'll be a lot easier to do
21:22collaborations from there so
21:24collaborations usually like hopefully if
21:27you're doing a collaboration with
21:28another singer who is somewhere on the
21:30same level as you then you can just do
21:32something where you split royalties and
21:33you don't have to pay them but I think
21:36that's a lot harder now to do because I
21:38think a lot of singers now want to be
21:40paid so um if you're pretty young and a
21:44beginner then hopefully just kind of
21:46starting with the remixes the bootle
21:48remixes will help you grow following and
21:50then from there you can reach out to
21:52other singers that are around your same
21:54level and then you'll have a social
21:57profile where you reach out to them
21:59they'll see your catalog of songs that
22:02are doing well and then you're following
22:06like maybe you have a good following as
22:07well you build up a following they'll
22:09kind of see some stuff that you have to
22:10back up it's a lot harder to reach out
22:12to a singer when you have no followers
22:17no songs out no profile photo like an
22:19empty profile photo so this is all stuff
22:22you need to get like kind of done first
22:25before you start trying to get
22:26collaborations is get some songs out get
22:28get some of those like remixes out get
22:31your socials kind of figured out do all
22:33that stuff before you go to the
22:35collaborations and then after
22:37collaborations then you can start kind
22:38of hopefully you can invest more realize
22:41that your project is working and then
22:43invest money into your project in your
22:46opinion can you actually make industry
22:47level Quality Music at home and a skill
22:51greater than equipment well I mean this
22:53is kind of an obvious
22:56one most Studio now are at home like a
23:01lot of the studios I think record plant
23:03is closing which is a big studio in La
23:04all these big studios are closing
23:06because nobody needs to use these
23:07Studios everyone's just even if it is a
23:11home studio uh like it's still going to
23:15be in a bedroom so technically it is
23:16still a bedroom that you're working in
23:18like maybe people have upgraded so that
23:22they're not just like in the I mean I'm
23:24still in my studio with my bed um or my
23:28like studio is still just my bedroom but
23:30if I upgrade it will just be a another
23:35apartment or house that has another
23:38extra bedroom where I'll put my studio
23:39in that another bedroom but it's still a
23:41bedroom Studio it's just like not the
23:44same bedroom that I am sleeping in so I
23:48think everybody most people in La have
23:50some type of home
23:52studio and they're all doing industry
23:56level Quality Music at home
23:59so it's like yeah you start in your own
24:01bedroom and then you just kind of
24:02upgrade to moving it out in your studio
24:04into another bedroom but still it's
24:06still at home and that's kind of like
24:07how uh everyone's been doing it there's
24:09a cool YouTube channel called Andrew
24:12Master he Andrew Master Andrew Masters
24:16he does a lot of like home studio tours
24:18and you can see all the stuff that
24:19people collect and I think that a lot
24:22times equipment is just like kind of a
24:24fun thing to have and and as you get
24:27older
24:28you over the years collect pieces of
24:32equipment I don't really collect too
24:34much equipment but there are people that
24:36like to collect equipment just because
24:37it's like fun and equipment is expensive
24:41but if over a 20-year period you're
24:44collecting equipment that is about $1 to
24:47$33,000 each year then and over that
24:50period you're probably going to have
24:51like $50,000 worth of equipment but
24:54that's just because you bought it over
24:56time so I think that when young people
25:00watch these Studio
25:03tours they see all this equipment but
25:06it's usually guys that are a lot older
25:09or more into further into to their
25:12career so if you're young and you do
25:14want to have equipment then just save up
25:17every year buy one piece of GE every
25:19year and then over a long period of time
25:21you'll have a bunch of cool stuff all
25:23right this question is how can I learn
25:24to create synths with serum like you do
25:27well
25:30I have a serum course you can check out
25:33that serum course where I detail
25:35everything uh that I know about serum
25:39and consolidate all my years of using
25:41serum I started using serum in
25:442017 so if you figure this is 2024
25:47that's 7 years of using
25:49serum and that's how long it has taken
25:52me I'm still trying to figure out stuff
25:54I'm still learning stuff about the synth
25:58and that is so let's say like six or
26:01seven years it kind of took me to really
26:02learn the synth uh so you could do
26:06something where you take my course where
26:07I try to consolidate all the information
26:09that I learn into a simple course
26:12there's probably some other courses that
26:13you can take as well also just like
26:17watching YouTube tutorials about how to
26:19use the synth and this is just like
26:21super important to know how to use the
26:24synth the basics of using the synth and
26:26then once
26:27you learn the basics then that will help
26:29expand your knowledge into like
26:32recreating sounds that you like I think
26:35the first place that you should start is
26:38downloading presets that are in a genre
26:42that you are trying to make so
26:45downloading Tech house
26:46presets taking a preset for a Basse
26:49sound opening up opening up the serum
26:52for that preset opening up another serum
26:55that's initial preset that has nothing
26:58on it and then just copying everything
27:00from that first preset to the second
27:02preset uh to the second copying
27:04everything from the first serum to the
27:06second serum and then trying to get it
27:09to sound exactly the same and if you
27:11can't get it to sound exactly the same
27:12after copying everything then there's
27:14something that you're missing and that's
27:15where you'll learn because you got to go
27:17in Deep dive into what is not uh making
27:20it sound the same so that's the that's
27:23probably the best way to really get
27:25ahead is just to learn how to copy
27:28presets and that will help you learn
27:30what everything does in serum really
27:33fast and the uh once you kind of open up
27:38the first serum are able to copy it into
27:41a second Serum by copying all the
27:44parameters then do it again but without
27:47that first serum open so just do it from
27:49memory so okay you copied everything now
27:52it's like okay now I remember oh I got
27:53to do this so just try to do it from
27:55memory without having to look at the
27:56first one and then once you
27:58are able
27:59to copy this copy this modulation of
28:03that and all that from memory then you
28:05kind of like lock it in your memory so
28:07that when you are opening up new presets
28:10and wanting to alter new presets then
28:13you can kind of go back in your mind
28:16where you kind of put that uh
28:19information in your mind into memory
28:20where you're like oh I got to change
28:22this modulation and now you can can like
28:24remember it a lot better um so that's
28:27just like something that I do every time
28:30that I make my videos I have to write
28:33down
28:34everything all the prameters I write
28:36them down and then I try to do it from
28:38memory so I'm still doing that to to um
28:42for like all my short little videos so I
28:45think like that's just really important
28:47is um trying to copy presets and making
28:50sure that you're able to copy the sound
28:52exactly and then also locking it into
28:54your memory this one is is it good to
28:57guide from other is it is it good to
29:00guide from another songs in other words
29:02I think it just means is it good to
29:03learn by copying other songs and of
29:07course this is essentially everything
29:08that I do this is how you learn if you
29:10think about if you've ever played guitar
29:13or any other instrument like if you ever
29:16learned how to play piano they're
29:18probably going to start teaching you how
29:21to
29:22play Mozart if you're learning classical
29:25music or maybe you want to learn a
29:26popular song if you're if you're
29:27learning guitar
29:29then you're probably going to start with
29:31like when I was learning guitar I
29:32started with learning Blink 182 and then
29:35Metallica and then I think it was other
29:40guitar players like Steve rayon or Jimmy
29:42Hendrick like I just started you start
29:44to learn all these popular songs and
29:47that's just how you have to to do it to
29:50learn an instrument and producing is
29:52essentially an instrument and the way
29:54that you have to learn how to produce is
29:57that you have to learn how to kind of
29:58copy the drums how to copy the synths
30:02how to copy the mixing of the vocals and
30:06once you do this over a long period of
30:08time for a bunch of
30:09different uh songs then you kind of take
30:12all everything that you learn and then
30:13you're able to kind of output your own
30:17unique work that is kind of like an ins
30:19kind of taking everything and
30:21inspiration from all the uh different
30:24types of works that you that you uh were
30:26inspired by so one thing that I
30:28mentioned in this answer that I gave
30:31was that you're yeah you're essentially
30:33just creating like a mashup of all your
30:35influences and then that becomes your
30:37own style and I remember I went to see
30:40an exhibit an exhibit an art exhibit at
30:44lachma which I think I think it was at
30:47lakma but it was Picasso and Picasso his
30:51dad was actually an art instructor and
30:54he
30:55believed that in order to kind of
31:00improve as an artist you had to copy the
31:03Masters so essentially copying other
31:05artists uh other big artist work so he
31:09it says um Picasso's father believed in
31:12disciplined copying of the Masters and
31:14drawing the human body from live models
31:16and plaster casts so I went to see this
31:19this exhibit and it was like Picasso
31:22over the years and you could see like
31:24the very beginning drawings where it it
31:27would say like Picasso copying this
31:29artist or Picasso copying that artist
31:32and they were just like sketch drawings
31:33and then you could see over the years
31:35after he started copying and and copying
31:38he would do like sculptures and stuff
31:40learning how to do all this stuff by
31:41copying other artists that were popular
31:43at the time he began to develop his own
31:46style that was unique to him and this is
31:49kind of the goal for you is is hopefully
31:52after copying enough work of other
31:55artists by and doing that to learn that
31:58you develop your own style what part of
32:00the song do you usually start with lead
32:02chords bass or
32:04drums for me I like to start with the
32:07well first of all I pick the
32:10BPM because that kind of determines what
32:12type of song it's going to be if it's
32:14going to be a house song I know the BPM
32:16if it's going to be a ratone song I know
32:18the BPM so I'll pick the BPM and then I
32:22will create the Baseline because a lot
32:25of times the Baseline is going to be the
32:27most important Parts especially for like
32:29house music and then from the Baseline I
32:32can build the chords off of the Baseline
32:34and then usually if I know the genre I
32:36know what the drums are going to sound
32:37like so I'll kind of add in maybe the
32:40drums after the Baseline and then the
32:43chords after the drums like uh adding
32:47the chords on top of the Baseline so
32:49yeah I like I like starting with the
32:50Baseline especially like cuz I I play
32:51guitar and a lot of times when I would
32:53come up with songs on
32:54guitar I would just like play play a
32:58single note on the guitar and then play
33:00like a try and come up with like some
33:02kind of Rhythm just playing a single
33:04note and then after that I could like
33:05come up with a chords after playing that
33:07single note on the guitar so I think
33:10like it's almost like just playing a
33:11bass guitar and then building the song
33:13around that bass guitar this question is
33:16want to pursue my music career but
33:17afraid I'll fail and work at Walmart for
33:20the rest of my life what's your
33:24advice well I don't know if he means
33:27like he doesn't want to work at Walmart
33:29or if he is working at Walmart
33:32currently I think it's
33:35like if you're working at Walmart
33:38currently you could either work at
33:41Walmart and pursue your music career as
33:44well or just work at Walmart and not
33:46pursue your music career you're always
33:47going to be working at Walmart insert
33:50whatever your job is now in there like
33:54not it doesn't have to be Walmart you
33:55could just say like your software
33:57engineering job like you could work at
33:59your software engineering job and pursue
34:01your music or you could just work on
34:02your on at your software engineering job
34:05and not pursue music like either way
34:07you're kind of stuck at that job doing
34:09doing that work that maybe you don't
34:11want to do and if you want to get out of
34:15it you might as well just like pursue
34:16music on the side and like I was
34:20saying that uh earlier is that you have
34:24to kind of commit to trading your music
34:28work as a full-time job as well or or
34:30like um treat it as a job but I know
34:34it's not like a full-time job as well
34:35because you don't have time because
34:36you're actually working a full-time job
34:38but treat it
34:39seriously um because if you
34:43are uh working a day job like just
34:47pursue your music career as well until
34:50you're able to make enough money off of
34:52your music career and it's good to have
34:55a day job because then then you can pay
34:57to to do music things like for me it was
35:00useful to have a day job because I was
35:02able to pay for vocalists when I wanted
35:04them to sing on a song like when I first
35:07moved to LA I made the mistake mistake
35:10of just like not having a job for the
35:13first year or two but then I couldn't
35:15really do anything because I didn't have
35:18any money to pay singers I didn't have
35:21any money to kind of like test out
35:23mixing Engineers but then I got a day
35:25job and it was like so much easier for
35:26me to actually put songs out because
35:28they had money to put uh hire singers
35:31like good vocalists and pay them money
35:34so I think like having a day job is
35:36actually helpful to your music career
35:40and I think it's like if you're 20s
35:42something years old like life is really
35:44long if you're probably going to live
35:47till you're 80 70 or 80 like if
35:50something terrible tragic doesn't happen
35:52you're going to live for a long time so
35:53life is a really long time and I just
35:55couldn't imagine
35:58living another 50 60 years being afraid
36:02um of not pursuing your music career so
36:07I I think it's
36:08like even if it took you 10 20 years of
36:12your life to let's say you hustled for
36:1410 20 years of your life and then took
36:16that long like that's
36:17still if you're
36:2021 and you spent 20
36:23years and you're 41
36:27yeah I mean you're not the prime age for
36:30being in the music industry but let's
36:32say you all of a sudden make it as a hit
36:35songwriter or you all of a sudden make
36:38it as a DJ at like 41 you're not going
36:40to like you're not going to be some pop
36:42young pop artist obviously like at the
36:44age so it's also about pivoting like if
36:47you want to work in the music industry
36:49you have to also pivot and realize what
36:52your strengths are like as you
36:54unfortunately for the music industry
36:55it's a very young centered
36:58industry and like as you age out of it
37:02you have to kind of figure out what
37:03other things you can do because there's
37:06just a lot of things that you can do you
37:08just have to be uh Brad in your scope of
37:10of what you want um what you would be
37:13happy with doing cuz like obviously for
37:16me when I was younger I wanted to be in
37:17a band and make it in a band when I was
37:20in high school but then it's like then I
37:22got into my mid 20s and it's like okay I
37:24can't really be a in a band anymore I
37:27got to like go produce or be a DJ or do
37:30music production and that's kind of like
37:31what I'm doing now is more so like music
37:34production focused stuff in sound
37:37design so it would be pretty terrible if
37:40you're s if you're
37:41like asking me this question now what if
37:46I'm afraid to pursue my music career but
37:48I'm afraid to fail and you're 21 and
37:51then you got to spend the
37:52next uh 50 to 60 years regretting that
37:57decision that you made so just make that
37:59decision now and uh work hard at it
38:03because um it would be sad that if
38:07you're 70 or 80 and you look back at
38:09your life and and you could have just
38:12spent cuz if you if you're 80 years old
38:14and you spent back and you and you look
38:16back at your
38:18life uh I mean it's like you might as
38:20well just have spent however long it it
38:23would have taken to get to where you
38:25wanted to be in your music career and if
38:26like
38:2820 years doesn't if you're
38:3021 20 years seems like a long time but
38:33if you're 80 20 years does not seem like
38:36a long time so there's this like effect
38:38where the older year that you get one
38:41year of time doesn't seem like that long
38:44so I know that being like a 20-some year
38:47old me saying like spend 10 10 20 years
38:50like doing this it seems like a long
38:52time but uh like that's just all you
38:55have to do I think it took me in order
38:58to be able to quit my job I've been
38:59doing music for like 20 years H working
39:03a day job for the past eight or eight
39:05years or so and uh this is only the
39:10first year where I'm actually making my
39:13entire living off of music it's taken me
39:15like 20 years this question is how can I
39:18completely overcome creative
39:20block now this is a quote from the war
39:24of art by Steven
39:25pressfield he said someone once asked
39:29Somerset moham who's an author if you
39:33wrote on a schedule or only when struck
39:35by inspiration and he responded I write
39:39only when inspiration
39:40strikes he replied fortunately it
39:44strikes every morning at 9:00 sharp
39:48and this is the just stating the
39:51importance of finding a time to do your
39:55creative work and really committing to
39:56that time for me it was like 8:00 p.m.
39:58every night I would just commit to that
40:01to get into doing this work and I don't
40:05think
40:07that uh creative having a creative block
40:10is like really a real thing I think it
40:12is almost just like excuse itis where
40:14you're just kind of making up some kind
40:15of excuse for not doing the work but if
40:19you just every day set of time every day
40:23that you can commit to just sitting at
40:25your desk and then I sit at my desk and
40:26I have this stupid timer thing and I'll
40:29just like set this timer for 60 minutes
40:32and if you just sit at your desk set a
40:34timer for 60 minutes or 30 minutes or
40:36whatever you want and just sit
40:38there then that inspiration May strike
40:43it may not strike but if you do it
40:45consistently let's say over a week maybe
40:50three out of four seven of those days
40:53you actually came up with something that
40:55was useful that's a lot further along
40:58than you would have gone if you didn't
41:02spend any days sitting at your desk
41:04because you said you had creative block
41:06for that week so you didn't do any work
41:08ultimately I think this so ultimately I
41:09think that saying you have creative
41:11block is just really a form of
41:13procrastination so like I was saying set
41:15of time every day that you can really
41:17commit to getting this work done treat
41:21it like a job if you don't show up
41:23you'll get fired and give yourself some
41:26kind of treat or something maybe eat a
41:28piece of candy when you sit down to
41:29reward yourself so that you create
41:32almost like a a pleasant response in
41:34your brain to sitting down to get ready
41:37to do the work and sometimes like yeah
41:40you'll set a timer for like 15 minutes
41:41if that's all you can do but then maybe
41:44after 15 minutes you really get into a
41:45flow then continue on and keep on
41:47working if you don't get into the flow
41:49stop cuz you just you you sat down you
41:52committed to do in the time and nothing
41:54came out of it but like if you feel good
41:57and want to continue then continue and a
41:58lot of times you'll continue on and work
42:00longer than you thought you could was
42:02there one thing that drastically helped
42:04you improve at producing so I don't
42:06really the one thing that I can think of
42:07is that I used Logic for like the
42:10longest time and logic pro has a lot of
42:13really cool stuff for composing and a
42:15lot of like really cool
42:17instruments um but I really wanted to
42:19make electronic music and I wanted to
42:23move into using Ableton cuz everyone
42:25that was making elect electronic music
42:28was doing it in Ableton and so I just
42:32committed to uh only using
42:35Ableton at at one point and I I realized
42:38that if I just said that anytime I want
42:41to start work on a new song I would only
42:44start creating that uh opening up a new
42:47Ableton session I would just like stop
42:49using logic completely I wouldn't go to
42:51aeton try to use Ableton and then be
42:53like oh I can't figure this out and go
42:54back to logic I would just only use
42:56Ableton I spent a whole year trying to
42:58figure out
42:59Ableton and Als in Ableton like there
43:02wasn't I didn't have any good
43:04instruments there weren't really good
43:05things in Ableton like I had to use a
43:08lot of
43:09samples and I think that helped a lot is
43:11that I didn't have a lot of like good
43:13vstd instruments in
43:15Aon um because in logic I thought there
43:17were like a lot lot of good ones that
43:19came stock with it and so when I started
43:22using Ableton I just had to start
43:23manipulating samples and and learning
43:26how to use samples a lot more instead of
43:27using like midi and I think that helped
43:30a lot with my
43:31production any tips for beginner artists
43:34in regards to mixing mastering a rule of
43:36thumb or
43:37anything well I think that if you are a
43:41producer as well focus more on the
43:44production and not the mixing and
43:46mastering a lot of mixing and mastering
43:48Engineers that are the top Pro mixing
43:51and mastering
43:52engineers get the songs already done so
43:55well that they don't really have to do
43:56too much like it's all about the
43:58production of these songs and if you
44:02just spend more time improving your
44:04production then ultimately the mixing
44:06and mastering will come after that and
44:09it won't even really matter like if you
44:11have a well well produced song that
44:13sounds really good it doesn't really
44:15matter too much if the mix isn't all
44:17that great focus on that production
44:20first don't worry too much about the
44:22mixing and mastering I think that a lot
44:24of people um focus on oh I need to get
44:28this song mixed and mastered and all of
44:30a sudden it will become a good song but
44:32that definitely is not true and I know
44:34this because I mix and master people for
44:37people and ultimately like when I do
44:40that I try to keep the mix the mixing
44:42close to their original demo cuz I think
44:45a lot of people really just
44:46like uh their song to sound how they how
44:50they made it originally but just maybe a
44:52little bit different a little bit
44:54cleaner but it's not going to make the
44:56song it's it's not going to make or
44:57break the song and I think I made this
45:01mistake um in early on because I started
45:05I felt like I was making some songs and
45:08I was like I don't really feel confident
45:10about mixing and mastering I'm just
45:11going to hire somebody and I paid a
45:14mixing engineer and it just like was a
45:16really terrible experience and then
45:20after that happened I just started
45:23improving my production and then
45:26eventually just started
45:27uh releasing my songs on my own mixing
45:29and mastering them on my own and it was
45:32like it doesn't really matter too much
45:34about the mix if the song is um good
45:38enough then then it should like
45:40hopefully like the production will help
45:43a lot if you kind of like focus on
45:46learning how to improve your production
45:47and if you're an artist and I don't know
45:49who asked this question if he's also a
45:50producer if you're an artist who doesn't
45:53also produce then just try to find a
45:55good producer who doesn't need to
45:57Outsource the mixing and mastering
46:00advice for releasing First Tech house
46:01track should I send two labels or self
46:05release so what I said is set a deadline
46:09for when you want to release it then
46:12find labels that release Tech house and
46:15email them most likely you won't get a
46:17response and this is why I'm just saying
46:19when you finish a song Set A release
46:22date so let's say I finish a song I'm
46:25going to set a release date for 6 weeks
46:27from now in that time I'm going to reach
46:30out to these labels see if they want to
46:33sign it but now I have a whole period of
46:37time where it's like I have a release
46:38date I need to contact these labels I
46:41need to send the song to DJs go to
46:461001tracklist
46:52docomo DJs or they're they're putting
46:55Tech house sets on 101 track list put
46:59together a spreadsheet of like the
47:00contact emails or Instagrams of these
47:02DJs hit them up if you don't have their
47:05email contact them on Instagram ask if
47:09they have a promo email that you can
47:10send your demo to so if you see a DJ um
47:16that has a a set list on 101 track list
47:19you find them in Instagram DM them hey
47:22do you have a promo email I can send a
47:24demo to I think ask for that email first
47:28I'm not sure if you should just say Hey
47:31listen to my song because I think that
47:33stuff is like no DJ is gonna I mean I
47:35don't like I don't like that when people
47:36do that like I'm not just going to click
47:38on your song because you sent me your
47:39song but it's like if you asked me uh
47:42for me like a lot of people ask me for
47:44feedback and if they if someone asked me
47:46like hey do you give feedback I would be
47:47like yeah go to this link and I'll send
47:48them a link where they can send their
47:49feedback but if they just send me their
47:52track in a DM hey can you listen to this
47:55hey what what can you give me feel like
47:57I'm I'm not gonna I'm probably not going
47:59to like listen to it unless it's
48:01somebody that I know and a lot of times
48:03it's not from somebody that I know so if
48:06you're going to reach out to somebody
48:07contact their uh them through try to
48:11find the correct channel to contact them
48:12on it uh so like their promo email or if
48:15they have some kind of show maybe their
48:16show email uh like if they have a radio
48:19show and then once you do that you
48:22contact the labels you contact the DJs
48:26you uh just start promoting your song on
48:28all the platforms like Tik Tok Instagram
48:31reals look at how other Tech house DJs
48:34are promoting their songs find some tech
48:37house songs that went viral gained a lot
48:40of popularity like um I know that MK and
48:44Dom dollar are big DJs but they someone
48:47teased that their song rhyme desk which
48:50weren't they weren't going to put out
48:51but then it became like really popular
48:53on Tik Tok and then they had to figure
48:56out a way to clear the sample and then
48:57put it out so if you can find some way
49:00to get a song to go viral then you can
49:03find a way to get the rights cleared
49:06like if it is using a
49:07sample uh I think disco Alliance did
49:09that too with the song he used a vocal
49:13from from Donald Glover and he was able
49:16to actually the song went so viral that
49:18he was able to clear that the actual
49:19vocal in his song and then put it onto
49:22streaming
49:23services I would also check out hyped
49:25edit which is is this platform that a
49:28lot of people use for SoundCloud I use
49:29it to provide free downloads and you can
49:33post your track on there like so post
49:35your track onto SoundCloud post a hype
49:37edit link and then they have their own
49:41like charting system and maybe you can
49:44chart on that hyped edit I I don't know
49:46if I'm saying that right hyped it I
49:47think maybe that's how I say it maybe
49:49you can chart on there and then that
49:51will gain some help your song gain some
49:53kind of popularity among other DJs and
49:56maybe help it go viral and then let's
49:58say you put out your song so you post it
50:00to drro
50:02kid um then after you even post like
50:05release your song on all these streaming
50:08platforms you can still keep doing all
50:10the same same things that I said you
50:11could still reach out to labels if your
50:14song goes viral then these labels will
50:16start reaching out to you uh so just
50:18like put out the song and then try to
50:20keep promoting it by reaching out to DJs
50:23and uh posting it to social media advice
50:26for when think a song idea has potential
50:28but you can't figure out what it needs
50:30so what I like to do is I'll take a
50:33break from the song and when I say take
50:35a break I don't mean like put the song
50:37in a folder and then ignore it for a
50:39whole year and come back to it and be
50:40like oh yeah that song was so good I
50:42mean just like take a one-day break
50:45where in this so let let's say on Monday
50:48I make the
50:50song can't figure out uh or I'm just
50:52like working on the song on Monday I
50:53can't figure out what it needs Tuesday
50:57I'm just going to listen to a put on a
50:59playlist of a bunch of songs that I that
51:02are in the style of the song that I'm
51:03making so if I'm making a tech house
51:05song Maybe on Tuesday I'll just start
51:08listening to a bunch of music uh on like
51:10Spotify like in Tech house or or any
51:13genre of of uh any genre just like start
51:16listening to other music and make it
51:21intentional like the way that you're
51:23listening to the music don't just like
51:25casually listen to music make it like
51:26very intentional like I'm going to be
51:28listening to music today but I want to
51:31find things in the songs that I'm
51:33listening to that I can apply to the
51:34song that I was working on so maybe
51:37you're just driving but you're listening
51:39to music and you're kind of thinking
51:42about the songs and maybe you'll
51:43discover something in one of the songs
51:45that you're hearing on a playlist while
51:47you're driving and then you can say oh I
51:49can maybe try that on my song that I was
51:50working on maybe you're listening to
51:52music at the gym you have on a playlist
51:54but you're listening to it with int
51:57where you're thinking okay I'm working
52:00out but I'm listening to this music and
52:02I want to find something in the music
52:03that I'm listening to that I can apply
52:04to the song that I was working on and so
52:07maybe over the period of a day or two
52:09after listening to a bunch of music uh
52:11like and maybe taking notes also like on
52:14a note on the notes app on on your
52:16iPhone just like oh that that bass sound
52:20from that Dom dollar track or like the
52:23effect sound from that John Summit track
52:27like make take some notes as you're
52:29listening to other songs and then when
52:31you go back to your original songs set a
52:35timer for like an hour and be like okay
52:37for this one hour I'm going to try these
52:38things and then just see if any of that
52:40stuff works out and then if none of it
52:42works out after that hour just try it
52:45try again and maybe after that hour of
52:47spending time working on the song Maybe
52:49you come up with uh something cool that
52:53you heard from any of these other songs
52:55and then that just helps you uh helps
52:59you make progress with the song and then
53:02also and then also if you think it has
53:04potential and you're not sure what it
53:06needs but you still want to release it
53:07then just release it and see what
53:08happens cuz maybe maybe you're just
53:11doubting yourself and sometimes just um
53:15putting the song out kind of relieves
53:18you from that doubt because then people
53:19you find out people like it and the song
53:22actually didn't need anything else so uh
53:26put song out and then move on work on
53:29another song so those are all the
