00:07this morning uh i would like to
00:09speak to you about the holy spirit
00:13in our lives in fact specifically the
00:15title of this message is the holy spirit
00:17our helper and the subtitle
00:21is learning to draw on the help of the
00:25this morning i would like to do more of
00:27a broader teaching specifically focusing
00:30on the person of the holy spirit i would
00:32like to read a passage of scripture
00:35passage of scripture from john's gospel
00:40and i have gone back to one of my old
00:45physical bibles and when i said physical
00:48you know these days i work with digital
00:51and i typically work out on my you know
00:54out of my tablet but i've gone back to
00:56old physical bibles and uh you know with
00:59some of the markings that i've made in
01:00there and i've gone into john's gospel
01:0415 and 16 where jesus teaches on the
01:07and i've gone to those underlined areas
01:10there and i thought i want to
01:11share some of those truths with you
01:16god has revealed to some of us years ago
01:19this will be a good reminder but for
01:22you never heard teaching along these
01:26even if you've heard teaching before
01:27there's always fresh layers
01:29uh of understanding that come into our
01:32lives so i'm reading from john chapter
01:34verse 15 and these are the words of
01:36jesus and in my old bible these are
01:39the the letters are printed in red
01:41because when we have a red letter
01:43of the bible it means that all the words
01:45of christ are printed in red so here we
01:48jesus says if you love me obey my
01:51and i will ask the father and he will
01:55advocate who will never leave you
01:58he is the holy spirit who leads you into
02:02the world cannot recognize him because
02:04it isn't looking for him
02:06and doesn't recognize let me start again
02:09the world does not receive him
02:10because it isn't looking for him and
02:13doesn't recognize him
02:14but you know him because he lives with
02:18and later will be in you no i will not
02:23orphans i will come to you soon the
02:25world will not see me
02:29but you will see me since i live you
02:33and when i'm raised to life again you
02:35will know that i'm in my father
02:38and you're in me and i am in you
02:41wow wonderful words wonderful wonderful
02:46you know when jesus spoke those words to
02:48his disciples uh and he's focusing on
02:52um you know jesus is the layers of
02:56uh but those closest to him were the
02:59twelve apostles that became the twelve
03:03at that point jesus had finished his
03:07which had lasted some three to three and
03:11in john chapter 12 and chapter 13
03:16jesus spoke to them about his departure
03:19he said to them that he was going to be
03:22he told them something they didn't want
03:24to hear they didn't fully understand
03:27everything that was going on but he said
03:28to them that his time had come to return
03:33and that he was going to be crucified
03:35and then in john chapter 14
03:3715 and 16 he began to teach them
03:40about the holy spirit and the holy
03:45in their lives and of course in our
03:46lives because the you know the function
03:49of the holy spirit in their lives is the
03:50same function uh that we have
03:52available to us today bible scholars
03:56call this the upper room discourse
03:59because by now jesus is sharing
04:02his last supper with his disciples and
04:05then began to teach them about the holy
04:08he knows he's not going to be with them
04:11in fact it will be a couple of days at
04:14before he's crucified three days after
04:18that he was gonna he was gonna be raised
04:20from the dead was gonna spend a bit more
04:22reinforce some of the things about the
04:24holy spirit and then go to heaven
04:26all right and we see there that uh in
04:30john chapter 13 and i'm just going to
04:32lay a little bit of a foundation
04:34so that we understand the context of
04:36where these words were spoken
04:38in john chapter 13 jesus sat down with
04:41and he shared the last supper with them
04:43and when they finished supper
04:45the bible says that he took off his his
04:47outer clothing and he put a
04:49a towel around himself and he began to
04:53now that's most uncommon and most
04:57because foot washing was done by the
05:01lower servant in the household so when
05:04dignitaries for that matter the lower
05:07and wash the visitors feet um and you
05:11meaning that in those days they didn't
05:14roads and so forth they had you know
05:16dusty dusty feet and so forth and dirty
05:20and uh but here jesus uh takes that
05:23that form of a lower servant and he
05:25begins to wash their feet
05:27um peter is fussing against it a little
05:31there's a peter or john he says oh no i
05:33don't want you to wash my feet
05:34he says i'll wash you if he doesn't know
05:36he says he says let me wash your feet
05:39jesus says and what i'm doing now he
05:41says i'm doing it as an example that you
05:44to one another now sometimes uh in
05:48churches and in places they have food
05:50ceremonies to me i don't believe that
05:53that means a great deal today in our
05:56but when somebody serves somebody else
06:00jesus tried to demonstrate and in fact
06:02the leadership style
06:04that jesus tried to get across to these
06:07servant leadership and not to be
06:09dominant from the top down which is
06:11what's exercised in the world
06:13but in the church we we operate in
06:15servant leadership we serve others and
06:18by serving them and and so that's in
06:21chapter 13 and then in chapter 14
06:24jesus now swings into teaching uh about
06:28um and as i said that is teaching
06:32that he reinforces after his death his
06:35burial and resurrection
06:36and he reinforced again uh to them he
06:39says listen he says do not depart from
06:42until you've been endued with power from
06:46acts chapter 1 verse 8 he says you shall
06:50after the holy spirit has come upon you
06:52and you shall be witnesses to me
06:54in jerusalem in judea and samaria and
06:57under the animals parts of the earth
07:00and so jesus teaches them about the holy
07:03in john 14 15 and 16 and he reinforces
07:07afterwards and that's kind of the
07:10reading from right now it's also
07:13important to realize
07:14when jesus says that that he was going
07:18helper or another advocate
07:21it's realizing that after this point
07:23jesus was their helper
07:25if they had a problem they would go to
07:27jesus say jesus we don't know what to do
07:28here can you help us and he would help
07:31all right um and they said lord we've
07:34we got an issue over here we don't know
07:36what to do there he tell him what to do
07:39and now he's telling them that he's
07:44and of course they were thinking oh gosh
07:45what's going to happen to us
07:47and this is where he then picks up and
07:50ask the father and he will send you
07:54helper or another advocate
07:58and that word another here you know in
08:03there are two words that are translated
08:06into the english word
08:07another one of those words is the word
08:10and angeles means another one of the
08:15and that word allos is in contrast to
08:19uh heteros and heteros
08:23means another one of a different kind
08:26so jesus said i'm gonna send you
08:29another an allos helper another one of
08:32the same kind and we're gonna
08:34refer back to that uh understanding in
08:39and he says i'm sending you another one
08:42of the same kind of the same kind as who
08:46well of the same kind as jesus jesus had
08:50he's about to leave he says but don't
08:52worry he says i'm sending you
08:54another helper of the same kind who will
08:57forever i'm leaving you he says but this
09:00helper that's coming
09:01he will be with you forever all right so
09:05the understanding there the word
09:08and we are reading from the new living
09:12the word advocate comes from the greek
09:17and normally we don't spend a great deal
09:19of time in a sunday service to deal with
09:21greek words but i feel to do so today
09:23because these are very
09:24basic understandings that every believer
09:26needs to grasp and understand
09:28and sometimes you know we need to go
09:30back into the original language to get
09:33of what god wants to get across to us
09:38in the greek means one who draws i'd let
09:42one who draws alongside to help
09:45all right one who draws alongside to
09:50in fact there is no english word
09:55that would fully describe the meaning of
09:59greek word parakletos that's why we use
10:02different words to get the sins
10:04across you know in the king james
10:07they use the word comforter jesus says i
10:11another comforter well that only reveals
10:16of what the holy spirit really does in
10:18our lives and the word comfort
10:21in the days when the king james uh
10:23translation was produced
10:25uh the word comforter today has a
10:26different meaning so we're a little bit
10:29already in the new king james version uh
10:32it uses the word helper
10:34uh capital h because again this is
10:37to the holy spirit and i quite like that
10:40helper has more of a broader meaning
10:45in the amplified translation it does
10:48what the amplifier does so well it
10:49amplifies on the meaning
10:51of the word and it gives us the terms
10:54helper intercessor and
10:57intercessor meaning one who stands in
11:01an advocate a strengthener and a standby
11:06all right i don't know about you but i
11:08need all of the above
11:11i need a counselor all the time i need a
11:15i need an advocate and the advocate
11:18the meaning there is that when people
11:22before a court they were out of their
11:26so they needed an advocate to go with
11:28them to help them work their way around
11:31and uh even to kind of stand in the gap
11:35and the court there is not necessarily a
11:39but it was also the king's court when
11:42say a person was able to come before the
11:46in the king's court the peasant was out
11:48of his depth and he just didn't know
11:50what to do he didn't know what the
11:51protocol was he didn't know
11:53what to say was he supposed to walk was
11:55his what was he supposed to do
11:57well he says they will bring a
11:58paracletos alongside him
12:01who would to teach him what to do and
12:04kind of teach him the protocol you know
12:07each time when i have gone on a mirai
12:10i'm a little bit out of my depth okay
12:13when i'm going on a mirai to either do a
12:15wedding or a funeral or i have some
12:17other opportunity to
12:18to sort of um to to speak
12:21on a mirai they always assign to me
12:25understands the protocol and they say
12:27this is what's going to happen when we
12:29this is what's going to happen then
12:31you'll be sitting there and then when
12:33get up this is where you stand and then
12:35when you speak you know just
12:36be aware of this and be aware of that
12:40and because i put my foot in it a few
12:41times you know one time this uh
12:44this parakletos that they assigned to me
12:47he had learned my name
12:48uh in my name being a german name is
12:50difficult to pronounce
12:52uh for most people well he got it right
12:55he got it so right and i was impressed
12:58and when i referred to him
12:59and to his name i got his name wrong and
13:01that was not very good all right and he
13:03let me know afterwards that i had not
13:05done as well as what he had done
13:06but anyway so that's the whole deal that
13:08you're going to a setting where you out
13:11they would assign a paracletos to you
13:15like an advocate that will help you to
13:18get around to help you to know what to
13:20say and what not to say when to speak
13:22and when not to speak
13:24and one actually who would stand in the
13:25gap for you and speak
13:27on your behalf all right so counselor
13:30helper intercessor advocates strengthen
13:32and stand by the message translation
13:36friend capital f a friend
13:40but not so much with the meaning of a
13:42friend like we have today
13:44you know uh friends uh it's again in
13:47some places they call that person that
13:49was going to be assigned
13:50to uh to go before court with them was
13:53going to be a friend
13:54to them and help them out in that moment
13:57because friends are there
13:58to help us out all right and so that's
14:01kind of the meaning there
14:03and when jesus says i will send you
14:07helper of the same kind as me
14:10but he will never leave you i'm about to
14:13but this one will never leave you
14:21the holy spirit in our lives
14:24praise god that he's ever present
14:28he ever wants to be our counselor he
14:31wants to fulfill all of these functions
14:33that we've tried to describe with
14:35our english terms and we're still
14:38because it he's all of that and more
14:45one of the things that happens is when
14:47we have the holy spirit in our lives
14:51we no longer have the saints of
14:52loneliness at any stage that we might
14:56because we are never alone
14:59all right we are never alone now
15:01sometimes we might cry for human
15:03company but we have divine company
15:07and he lives on the inside of us
15:14so jesus just to emphasize who he's
15:18speaking about in the very next phrase
15:21he is the holy spirit this comforter
15:24this advocate this counselor the
15:27standby this paracletis here is the holy
15:32once again prior to that jesus was there
15:36he was the go-to person but now he says
15:40and this other one is coming another one
15:43as me uh and he is the holy spirit
15:47and he says he leads you into all truth
15:51he leads you into all truth not just
15:55all truth frank and i suggest to you
15:59you and i in fact nobody can grasp any
16:04without the help of the holy spirit
16:07all right and it would appear
16:11it would appear as though that uh when
16:13pastor vanessa was ministering the
16:16a couple of nights ago that clearly the
16:18holy spirit was upon him in fact can
16:20somebody take a picture of me as well i
16:21quite like that idea of having a
16:23halo on me as well so there is a the
16:28in the life of the person that
16:29communicates the word of god
16:31and there's the holy spirit there in the
16:35to help them to understand and to grasp
16:38spiritual truth anyone wishing and this
16:42is a new outline anyone wishing
16:44to grasp deeper truths from the word of
16:48must develop a deeper relationship with
16:53all right so the need for us to have a
16:57with the holy spirit you know we speak
17:00personal relationship with god the
17:03father through the lord jesus christ
17:05we speak about a personal relationship
17:07with jesus christ himself but we also
17:10a relationship with the holy spirit very
17:12short we'll touch on the trinity
17:14which is a riddle to many christians i'm
17:17some of those uh understandings a bit
17:20in our lives here as part of our
17:22teaching he is the holy spirit
17:25and if you and i want to go into a
17:28deeper level of understanding
17:30in the word of god in spiritual truth
17:33uh you know the bible speaks about
17:35different levels of spiritual truth
17:38paul described it as like eating natural
17:42you know he speaks about milk the milk
17:44of the word then it speaks about the
17:46of the word which is like you know solid
17:49uh and then it speaks about the strong
17:51meat so there is if you like three
17:52levels of spiritual truth
17:54uh that are available for us to
17:57understand and to step into
18:00and sometimes people go no further than
18:04the milk of the world
18:06and that's a bit sad because there are
18:09and then you know sometimes you know
18:13anyway um let's not go there let's not
18:17uh i'm trying to i'm trying to dish up
18:19as much spiritual truth to you as i can
18:21so at any level of your spiritual
18:23development you should be able to get
18:26and help you to get to the next level
18:27all right so there we go here's the holy
18:30who leads us into all truth
18:37jesus goes on to say he says the world
18:39cannot receive him he says but
18:42you will receive him so he
18:44differentiates between
18:45the world and then he says you
18:48he's speaking to his disciples and he's
18:50speaking to you and me
18:52today the world the people who are
18:55who are busy with their lives you know
18:57busy doing what they do
18:59he says but you he says he says
19:03he says you will receive him they cannot
19:06because they they don't see him and and
19:09they don't wouldn't recognize him if
19:11they saw him and they're not
19:12looking for him all right and when we as
19:16born again believers
19:17we've experienced salvation when we seek
19:21with the holy spirit we hear about it
19:24and we hopefully have somebody that can
19:27we are seeking the holy spirit and and
19:30jesus says we can receive the holy
19:33into our lives we have received jesus
19:37is our personal lord and savior and we
19:41the holy spirit as our helper and these
19:44are typically two separate
19:46events two separate experiences
19:49and every believer should have both now
19:52new believer's class and in our school
19:54of the world one we drill down in
19:56to further detail and bring
19:58understanding because every
20:00many christians who are not
20:01spirit-filled will claim that they have
20:03the holy spirit in their lives and
20:04and they're quite right they have the
20:06holy spirit and as i say we teach the
20:08difference between those two and
20:10hopefully help people to step into the
20:13what the old-time pentecostals used to
20:15the second blessing all right the first
20:18blessing is salvation
20:19having received jesus christ as your
20:21personal lord and savior the second
20:23is receiving the baptism with the holy
20:26spirit with the evidence
20:27of speaking in tongues the world cannot
20:31receive him so in other words in other
20:34we must be born again before we can
20:38the holy spirit and of course to be born
20:41again means to receive jesus christ as
20:44personal lord and savior to confess him
20:46as lord of our lives to surrender
20:48our life to him um and while some of
20:52understandings are you know very simple
20:55and you know most of you were like well
20:57we have no problem understanding that
20:59we're sort of ministering we've got
21:01people joining us from online we don't
21:03know what background
21:04people come from we want to make it as
21:06understandable as what we can
21:07so that everybody can step into
21:10the baptism with the holy spirit so once
21:13again we must be born again
21:15before we can receive uh the holy spirit
21:17you see only a forgiven human spirit
21:20can be indwelled by the holy spirit
21:24and when the holy spirit comes and he he
21:27we receive him and he moves into our
21:30our body becomes the temple of the holy
21:35all right but specifically he lives in
21:40all right and only a forgiven human
21:44can be filled with the holy spirit okay
21:46so you understand that
21:49jesus says but you know him says they
21:53but you know him because he lives with
21:57now and later will be in you
22:00now that's a very interesting statement
22:02he says you know him
22:04the holy spirit because he lives with
22:07and they were not aware of that okay but
22:11later he says he will be in you he's
22:15and then he will be in you now to use a
22:19when i sit down for dinner and i got
22:22food on my plate i know this is a silly
22:24example but it'll help to get the point
22:26when i sit down and i got dinner in
22:28front of me dinner is with me
22:31but after i've eaten it dinner is in me
22:34have you know that there's a difference
22:40you i know it was a silly example but
22:42hopefully it helps to get the point
22:45and somebody said once uh he says
22:48you know we should always give thanks uh
22:50you know say grace before we eat
22:52but if you forget to give thanks that
22:54after you have eaten just two psalm one
22:56says bless the lord all my soul and all
22:59that is within me bless his holy name
23:02say grace afterwards uh okay
23:05so he says you know him he lives with
23:09you now and he will be
23:14in order for us to understand what jesus
23:17is talking about we really need to have
23:20a bit of an understanding
23:22of the triune nature of god
23:25we call it the trinity you know when we
23:28do our new believers class
23:29i tell everybody i say by the way guys
23:34that means we believe in the trinity we
23:38uh and three persons in the godhead
23:42one god and then you've got god the
23:43father god the son and god the holy
23:45spirit but there's still only one god
23:47but there are three distinct and
23:51all right so having that understanding
23:53will unlock what jesus is trying to
23:55get across to them all right in fact in
24:00a bit earlier on jesus said to them he
24:05if you have seen me you have seen the
24:09because jesus was operating
24:12under the direction of the father every
24:15moment and every step of the way
24:17and jesus said to his disciples says
24:20i'm going to heaven i'm going back to my
24:23father and i'm preparing a mansion for
24:26and uh john chapter 14 you know many of
24:29you know the passage it's a fantastic
24:32jesus has gone to prepare a place for us
24:34and he says and if i
24:36don't prepare a place for you i will
24:37come again and i will receive you to
24:40making reference to the second coming at
24:44and then like philip is there and philip
24:46head is spinning out
24:47he says oh you're going to the father he
24:49says show us the father
24:51show us the father jesus and jesus says
24:55have i been with you this long and you
24:57say show me the father i've been with
25:00because the father lived in jesus
25:03through the power of the holy spirit now
25:06let me at this point say like some of
25:10i would i would suggest that the trinity
25:12is probably one of the more complex uh
25:16things to understand in the word of god
25:17but when you understand the trinity
25:19it'll unlock a whole lot of other areas
25:22all right so so see one truth unlocks
25:26and then another truth unlocks another
25:28truth and so we need to wrestle with
25:29some of these things in order to get to
25:32of spiritual truth so jesus says
25:36philip have i been with you this long
25:38and and you say show me the father he
25:40says he says i've been with you all this
25:42time but but yet jesus
25:45was still the second member in the
25:48trinity and they're talking about the
25:50but the father is in jesus and jesus
25:52says i'm in the father
25:55all right and in fact in john chapter 10
26:00jesus says i and the father are one
26:04okay i and the father are one
26:09now all three members of the trinity
26:13are distinctly separate persons
26:17there are three of them okay
26:22and all three members of the trinity are
26:27meaning another of the same in nature
26:34in the nature of god and in the
26:38the father the son and the holy spirit
26:43they're all kind they're all loving
26:47they're all patient they all
26:51exercise long-suffering towards us
26:56all right so it's not like when you deal
26:58with one and with another you get sort
26:59of different characters they
27:01all first and foremost love god is love
27:06the lord is gracious because psalm 145
27:09says the lord is gracious and full of
27:13slow to anger and of great mercies
27:16the lord is good to all and his tender
27:20are over all his works who is he talking
27:23about he's talking about god the father
27:24god the son and god the holy spirit
27:27they're all an elders of one another
27:31of the same kind yet in function
27:35and in operation there are heteros
27:39they are different they are another one
27:42of a different function
27:44the god the father god the son and god
27:47they each have a different role and a
27:51and it's different and distinct but when
27:57they're completely one that's how you
28:01three persons and one god
28:07they're not like many people when you
28:09get three people together somewhere you
28:11end up with three opinions
28:14father and the son of the holy spirit
28:17they defer to one another they are so
28:21much on the same page
28:22when you you know try when you look at
28:25them and try to sort of analyze them
28:27sometimes almost like hard to separate
28:30separate out the three distinct persons
28:32uh when you look at them because they're
28:34so on the same page and they're so
28:37intertwined and they're so one
28:40this is how you know the old testament
28:42when god speaks to israel he says here o
28:45israel the lord your god is one
28:51and you know we speak about christianity
28:55being a monotheistic religion mono
28:59as opposed to a pluralistic
29:02religion where people got multiple gods
29:05and you know different religions got
29:06multiple gods and multiple deities
29:08we only have one yet the godhead is made
29:12of three distinct persons father son and
29:16and jesus says no he says i will not
29:20as orphans i will not abandon you yes
29:23but you will not be abandoned he says
29:30now that's interesting uh when jesus
29:32says i will come to you
29:34he was at that point not speaking about
29:37he was speaking about the day of
29:38pentecost when jesus
29:41came to the disciples there by the power
29:48you know today jesus christ lives in the
29:53through the power of the holy spirit
29:57and as i say when i first heard these
30:00truths and this concept like my head
30:01spinning out it's like
30:04how do you put all of that together um
30:07all right when jesus died on the cross
30:12and uh his body was buried his spirit
30:15went to hell after three days he rose
30:17again he had a bodily
30:18resurrection he appeared to his
30:20disciples over a period of some 40 days
30:25and then he ascended up to heaven he had
30:28resurrection and a bodily ascension to
30:32and the bible says he's seated at the
30:35of the father now that means that the
30:40and jesus is in heaven yet we say jesus
30:46and the question is if jesus is in
30:48heaven how is jesus among us well jesus
30:52through the power of the holy spirit
30:56and the bible says christ within you the
31:00how is christ in you and he's also in
31:02heaven seated at the right hand of the
31:06well he's in us through the power of the
31:10sometimes people have visions
31:14of you know there being a gathering of
31:16believers there's worship going on or
31:18whatever is going on at any given time
31:20and somebody sees jesus walking in
31:22amongst the isles walking up and down
31:24walking around and it is quite possible
31:28that jesus is able to leave heaven and
31:30come to earth and to
31:32walk in amongst the people and the group
31:35meeting and so forth but he if he's
31:37there when we say he's here
31:39he's with us through the power of the
31:44and if you don't fully get your head
31:46around that right now don't worry about
31:48in my mind the trinity we receive it not
31:52but it there's layer upon layer upon
31:55layer of revelation until you get a
31:57a good uh grasp on that truth
32:00jesus says to his disciples where two or
32:03three are gathered together in my name
32:06i'm right in their midst
32:09and many times when we come together and
32:11we pray we say lord we are
32:12conscious of your presence because you
32:15promised us that two of us come together
32:17all three that you're right in our midst
32:21but how is he there he's there through
32:23the power of the holy spirit
32:25so jesus says i will not leave you
32:26orphans i will come to you
32:33and in chapter 14 and in verse 25 he
32:37i'm telling you these things now while
32:42but when the father sends the advocate
32:44as my representative
32:46that is the holy spirit he will teach
32:50and will remind you of everything that i
32:55so jesus says i'm telling you these
32:56things now while i'm still with you
32:58because within hours a couple of days
33:03you know they are going from the upper
33:07where his disciples had prepared the
33:09last supper the passover meal actually
33:12which became the last supper they're
33:14going from there to the ghana of
33:20and then you know the gods of the high
33:23priest came and they captured him from
33:25there and took him away
33:27and put him through various trials
33:28accused him of being guilty and then
33:30hung him on the cross and killed him all
33:34he says i'm telling you these things now
33:36while i'm still with you
33:38you know jesus taught his disciples for
33:40about three and a half years
33:42while he was physically present with
33:46and on the day of pentecost the father
33:50the holy spirit as jesus's
33:54representative now the holy spirit is
33:58to as it were do what he wants to do
34:03because none of them do what they want
34:04to do they're all here for each other
34:06the holy spirit is in the earth today
34:09and he's in your life as a born-again
34:11and in my life to be jesus's
34:20and uh it goes on to say here
34:23that uh he's there he says to teach the
34:27church everything he says i'll i says
34:29he will lead you into all to he he will
34:32the church everything and by the way the
34:36the holy spirit is the true teacher
34:39of the church sometimes we make
34:43people that are anointed to teach the
34:45word of god but ultimately
34:47the holy spirit is the true teacher of
34:52and he's there he says to remind the
34:54church of everything that jesus had
34:57jesus taught him many things but at that
35:00a lot of truth didn't register with them
35:03didn't fully grasp it um and he says but
35:07when the holy spirit comes
35:09he says he will he will he will teach
35:12you all things and he will remind you
35:14of everything that i have said
35:18now there is a facet an understanding
35:22sometimes people overlook so you might
35:25get say somebody saying
35:26oh gosh you know i'm a christian i've
35:28been a christian for many years but i
35:30can't seem to remember scripture
35:34you know like people do memory verses i
35:38put it together can i suggest to you
35:40that that's a function of the holy
35:44somebody said to me once they said look
35:46he says i'm working in the legal field
35:49he says i'm working with one specific
35:51act the parliament is passed many years
35:54and i can virtually quote the whole act
35:57he says but i've been a christian for
35:58many years but i can't quote scripture
36:02he says i can't remember it and what
36:04that really means is that there is a
36:08in the relationship with the holy spirit
36:10because the holy spirit reminds
36:12us of things and not in a
36:16kind of a mechanical sort of a way but
36:18he reminds us of the scripture that we
36:21at the moment facing what we're facing
36:26certainly that scripture comes up that
36:27deals with that particular situation so
36:29we know exactly what to do
36:31it's a function of the holy spirit all
36:39so let me encourage you if somehow that
36:42description applies in your life as well
36:45how do you remember scripture like that
36:47it's not an intelligence issue
36:49and it is not even so much a a good
36:54it's a function of the holy spirit but
36:57the holy spirit helps us he brings up
36:59you see provided we've read the whole
37:02bible from cover to cover
37:04and you know sooner or later every
37:06christian needs to do that
37:08because if you haven't read it and you
37:12the holy spirit can't remind you of it
37:15all right so it's amazing it's amazing
37:18sit in a situation and and we discuss
37:21something with somebody and the
37:22scripture comes up but what's what's
37:23that it's the holy spirit
37:25right there helping out by the way guys
37:28the scripture what you're discussing
37:29here's the solution here is the word
37:31here is the answer to your
37:33problem or here is the the method
37:36as to how god wants you to proceed
37:39because we don't live
37:40according to the world's philosophies we
37:42live according to the philosophy
37:44of the word of god so it's a function of
37:46the holy spirit so truly
37:48the holy spirit is not only the true
37:50teacher of the church
37:52and all of us need a a a deep
37:55relationship with him to go deeper into
37:57truth but he's also the one that reminds
37:59moment by moment because he's always
38:03he's always there you see when jesus
38:07i'm teaching you these things while i'm
38:12i'm going to be gone soon
38:15in fact we'll refer to that again later
38:16on if we have enough time
38:18so jesus was their helper while he was
38:22but when he went out the door and they
38:24were by themselves the helper wasn't
38:27but he says when the holy spirit comes
38:31with you but he will be in you
38:34so as a spirit-filled believer when i
38:38turned from this way to that way the
38:40holy spirit has just turned from this
38:41way to that way when i go over here
38:44the holy spirit goes over here so
38:46wherever the whole i am the holy spirit
38:48is and that is the same for you
38:50so the ability to call on the help and
38:52the draw and the holy spirit is there
38:54moment by moment literally
38:58moment by moment when jesus was
39:01interacting with his disciples sometimes
39:03he was interacting with the twelve
39:06sometimes only with the three we talk
39:08about the inner circle
39:10uh amongst the twelve which was three
39:12disciples peter james and john
39:14while jesus was with peter james and
39:16john the others were alone they didn't
39:17a helper with them at that specific
39:21but he says when the helper comes he
39:25forever so let me encourage my friend to
39:29learn more and more to draw on the help
39:32of the holy spirit moment by moment for
39:36daily living not just when we're praying
39:39uh but moment by moment and just
39:41sometimes even just quietly
39:43you know you're facing a situation
39:45you're facing a problem
39:46so help me holy spirit and guess what
39:51for some of you young people who are you
39:53know not the young ones you're studying
39:56some sort of exam situation you know
39:58gosh i can't remember say
40:00help me holy spirit and learn to rest
40:03on the holy spirit now the holy spirit's
40:05not going to make up for laziness if you
40:08you know like you haven't even hardly
40:09bought it to read the material you know
40:11you know like but if you have made an
40:15he will be right there with you to help
40:18remind you of things that you have
40:24i will send you the advocate john 15 26
40:29he says the spirit of truth he will come
40:32to you from the father
40:34and he will testify all about me
40:38there's another facet of truth you know
40:40jesus comes at them with chunks
40:42of truth so there's about five or six
40:46in john chapter 14 15 and 16 and we're
40:49picking those out he says i will send
40:53the spirit of truth now the holy spirit
40:58has different names or sometimes
41:00different descriptions given to him like
41:03the holy spirit or the spirit of god
41:06or the spirit of truth or the spirit of
41:11christ spirit is all the same
41:14it's all different terms for the same
41:17the third member of the trinity namely
41:19the holy spirit is called
41:21the spirit of truth and here is the
41:24the holy spirit always leads us in line
41:28with the truth of god's word always
41:32say always with me always
41:35there is never an exception the holy
41:39never contradict or circumvent
41:42the word of god and i say that because
41:45sometimes people claim
41:47to be led by the holy spirit they claim
41:52you know spirit-filled and they claim to
41:54have revelation from the holy spirit
41:56and quote unquote the holy spirit has
41:57told them to do something that is
42:00contrary to what the word of god says
42:03immediately tells them to say no you
42:05have not heard from the holy spirit
42:07no no but i've had a vision does not
42:10if it's not in line with the word of god
42:11it's not the holy spirit it will be a
42:15not the holy spirit there are deceptive
42:19seducing spirits some of them
42:23even masquerading as the holy spirit are
42:26making out there the holy spirit but no
42:28there's only one holy spirit
42:30and if you're born again spirit-filled
42:33and when he leads you you see the holy
42:36spirit is the author of the word
42:38when he leads us he will lead us through
42:43and always in line with the word never
42:46contrary to the word i just kind of
42:49overemphasize that you know sometimes
42:52people will it's like brother hagin used
42:54to say you know bro people
42:55says middle of the road friends middle
42:57of the road people either end up in on
43:00one side of the road in the ditch or
43:01they end up on the other side of the
43:03and somehow god wants us to walk in in
43:07walk by the spirit um and and not
43:10to one or the other you know they used
43:13to say that people who only
43:15have the word and not the holy spirit
43:17people you know word only people dry up
43:19and and people only only have the holy
43:22spirit but no word of god people blow up
43:24but when you have the word and the
43:26spirit together you grow up
43:29all right the holy spirit can be likened
43:33like to a river jesus says there will be
43:37rivers of living water flowing forth
43:40innermost being and it speaks about the
43:42well of salvation which is another
43:44reference to the holy spirit but if you
43:47the holy spirit being like the river of
43:52and the banks of the river is the word
43:56so the holy spirit will stay within the
43:59the parameters of what the word of god
44:02uh describes because he is indeed the
44:05of the book and will never contradict or
44:09the word of god he says he will come to
44:13and of course on the day of pentecost
44:15acts chapter 2 verse 1
44:17on the day of pentecost had fully come
44:19they were all gathered together
44:21in one accord and the holy spirit came
44:25from the father there was a sound is a
44:30coming from heaven and it filled the
44:31whole house where they were sitting
44:33and jesus goes on to say and he will
44:34testify all about me
44:37when the holy spirit comes he will
44:39testify all about me it's been said that
44:42when the holy spirit comes
44:43he always points to jesus he doesn't
44:47he always points to jesus and down
44:50through the centuries and through the
44:52decades there's been so little
44:54understanding on the holy spirit
44:57and his function and his person
45:01because he always points to the holy to
45:03to jesus and because there wasn't any
45:05teaching around and it's not until you
45:09different people came along and and
45:11began to teach about the holy spirit
45:13there was howard carter
45:14uh began to teach about the holy spirit
45:181920s began to teach on the holy spirit
45:21began to point out that the holy spirit
45:25he was a he a person
45:29and then you get others you know books
45:30that have been written uh one of them
45:33called good morning holy spirit which
45:35brings an understanding that you can
45:37relationship with the holy spirit and
45:40talk to him and so forth so
45:43he says but when he comes he will
45:47about me testify means speak well off
45:51commend the good news bible says he will
45:55speak about me and here's the key
45:59friends the more the holy spirit moves
46:03the more jesus christ is lifted up
46:08and if you were to go into a meeting
46:10anywhere at any time
46:11and come away from there and say wow you
46:13know the holy spirit was really moving
46:18here is the the acid test
46:22was jesus christ lifted up almost man
46:28because if men lifted up the holy spirit
46:30didn't move all that much it's all about
46:32pointing to jesus christ
46:36giving him all the glory all the praise
46:40the power is his the glory is his the
46:44belongs to him see there's no pride no
46:50in our lives but there's certainly no
46:53in this place where the word of god is
46:55ministered it's all about
46:56pointing people not to self but to point
47:09jesus says it is best for you that i go
47:13you know sometimes people say oh would
47:15it not have been good
47:17if we had been around in the days of
47:19galilee jesus walked around
47:21to be able to walk with him and see
47:23everything he did well wouldn't that be
47:26no jesus says it's greater today
47:30it was good when he was with them but he
47:31says it'll be better afterwards
47:34it is best that i go away because if i
47:38the advocate won't come but if i go away
47:41i will send him to you and this
47:45we've said before you know pointing out
47:47that when jesus was with them he was
47:50but when the holy spirit came he lives
47:54all right he's on the inside of us he's
47:57moment by moment the omnipresence of god
48:01is so true when it comes to the holy
48:03spirit he's everywhere at the same time
48:05but he most certainly lives
48:07inside the born-again spirit-filled
48:11john 16 verse 8 i'll move quickly
48:15and verse 8 through to verse 11. jesus
48:17says and when he comes
48:20he meaning the holy spirit the helper
48:24the advocate he will convict the world
48:28and of god's righteousness and of the
48:33the world's sin is that it refuses to
48:40the world meaning unsafe people
48:45you know when bible speaks about
48:46judgment the ultimate sin
48:49that in the end people will be judged
48:50for and the sin that will send people to
48:54is it is to refuse to believe in jesus
48:58and to surrender to him
49:01it's not all of this other stuff that
49:03people do because actually all of this
49:05other stuff that people do
49:06the sin in their lives it's already been
49:08paid for on the cross
49:10because jesus didn't just die for the
49:12sins of the christians
49:14he died for the sins of the whole world
49:16it's already the sin problem has been
49:21so all we have to do in our own personal
49:22lives is to deal with the rebellion
49:25and to surrender our life to jesus
49:30him the lord and savior of our lives so
49:32that's why he says he says
49:34the world sin is that it refuses to
49:38righteousness is available because i go
49:42you know amazing when jesus went to
49:44heaven the bible teaches
49:46us that jesus took some of his own blood
49:50to heaven now don't tell me how
49:52physically literally that took place but
49:54he took his own blood to heaven
49:56and he went into the heavenly temple and
49:58he went into the holy of holies and he
50:00went to the mercy seat
50:02inside the holy of holies and he
50:04sprinkled his own blood on there
50:08so that mercy would be extended towards
50:10mankind and the people could get saved
50:13salvation is now available righteousness
50:16has been freely offered
50:18to every man every woman every child
50:21from the times that jesus rose from the
50:25and went to heaven to the time that he
50:29we speak about the day of salvation now
50:32is the day of salvation
50:34the day of salvation will close for for
50:38on the day when jesus christ returns
50:41so my friend now is the time to get
50:46do not let your own rebellion send you
50:51because the world sin jesus tells us is
50:55to believe in me righteousness is this
50:59because i go to the father
51:01and you will see me no more judgment
51:04come because the rule of this world has
51:08so can i say that the main function of
51:12in the lives of the believer is to lead
51:14us and to empower us it's the main
51:17there's other facets to it but these two
51:19are the the main summary
51:22but the holy spirit's main function in
51:24the life of unbelievers
51:26is to convict them of sin of
51:27righteousness and of judgment
51:30so the holy spirit functions in your
51:32life and in mind as born again believers
51:34if you are indeed born again and in the
51:36lives of people that are still
51:38spiritually lost that function is
51:41we pray for another outpouring of the
51:45upon all flesh on our cities and our
51:48towns and we're talking about pouring
51:52on on the whole nation we really praying
51:54say god when the holy spirit comes he
51:57lost people of sin he will convict
52:01lost people of righteousness and he will
52:04lost people of judgment the judgment
52:07all right and the only way to escape
52:10judgment is to surrender
52:12our life to jesus christ and to become
52:16once we have we are born again with
52:20judgment to life john tells us
52:23we've passed there's no more judgment
52:27um and of course there's other facets to
52:30that we speak about the judgment seat of
52:33is better called the reward seat of
52:35christ which we will
52:36cover at some point uh in the
52:38not-too-distant future actually um
52:41so john 16 uh the last passage i want to
52:44uh you know encourage you with today
52:48he says there's so much more i want to
52:51but you can't bear it now see jesus had
52:55so many more things that he could have
52:57but he says you couldn't handle it you
52:59couldn't even handle what i've already
53:01he says but there is more he says
53:04but when the spirit of truth comes he
53:08into all truth all truth there's an easy
53:12complex truth he will guide you into the
53:14milk of the word the
53:16meat of the word the strong meat all
53:19he will not speak on his own but he will
53:22what he has heard he will tell you
53:26about the future and he will bring me
53:30by telling you whatever he receives from
53:33so the holy spirit is there in our lives
53:36constantly give glory to jesus
53:40to constantly draw people not to self
53:47verse 14 he will bring me glory by
53:49telling you what he's received from me
53:51verse 15 all that belongs to the father
53:55this is why i said the spirit will tell
53:58whatever he receives from me all right
54:02so again just to break that down and
54:04then we'll close very shortly
54:06he says he says when the spirit of truth
54:09he will guide you into all truth the
54:12bible also speaks about a spirit of
54:13error you know but the holy spirit is
54:16the spirit of truth and he guides
54:18us into all truth friends
54:21we don't end up in truth by ourselves
54:24we don't stumble our way into it and we
54:27end up by accident we only end up in
54:32because the holy spirit has guided us
54:36you know funny but sometimes we talk
54:38about somebody you know giving a
54:40testimony they say you know i was a real
54:43lived a bad life and you know but then i
54:47and we say no you didn't found the lord
54:50all right and then i figured it all out
54:53no you didn't figure it out the holy
54:55spirit opened the eyes of your
54:58and then i got really clever and i began
55:00to understand spiritual truth no you
55:03the holy spirit opened the eyes of your
55:13it's not about self and how clever we
55:16and what we're discussing here is not an
55:18intelligence issue and it's not a
55:20an academic exercise sometimes people
55:22think that are really good academically
55:24i salute you for it but
55:26your academic abilities don't
55:28necessarily help you a great deal when
55:30relationship with the holy spirit and
55:34spiritual truth i could you know we
55:36could travel around the country we could
55:38go from university to university
55:40we could grab some of those lectures
55:42there some of them are high-end
55:45but their sin is they do not believe in
55:48they haven't got an ounce of spiritual
55:50truth in their lives all right so this
55:52is not an academic exercise
55:54this is a spiritual exercise for the
55:57you know the bible says that when paul
56:00had his experience on his role to to
56:03damascus and then later on when
56:05when uh you know ananias uh
56:08anus and somebody was saying to him one
56:10of the disciples was saying to him to
56:11pray for him to get him baptized with
56:14the bible says there was like scales
56:17fell off of his eyes it's almost like he
56:18had physical scales of his eyes
56:21that prevented him from seeing spiritual
56:25fell off and suddenly he came into the
56:27baptism with the holy spirit and
56:29next minute i mean he is like you know
56:32from day to night it's a
56:33night today it's like i mean i mean one
56:35minute is persecuting the church next
56:37minute is building the church
56:40so we didn't don't end up in truth by
56:41ourselves or by accident we're guided
56:44by the holy spirit into all truth the
56:49is actually the spirit of wisdom and
56:52that the book of ephesians chapter 1
56:56and he's the one that opens the eyes of
57:00to see and i usually say and i usually
57:04pray when i pray for lost people
57:06i say lord give him eyes to see and
57:09they're not physical eyes as much as
57:10their spiritual eyes
57:12give him ears to hear and give him a
57:16i think that's a very valid prayer and
57:19encapsulated what paul was speaking
57:21about one of paul's prayer
57:23which is listed in ephesians chapter 1
57:27that god will give unto them a spirit of
57:29wisdom and revelation
57:30in the knowledge of god the eyes of
57:33their understanding being enlightened
57:37he will tell you about the future
57:40jesus says we'll close very shortly
57:44the king james version says he will show
57:47things to come i quite like that
57:52because when people say well he will
57:55uh you know about the future
57:58people are saying i'm not hearing
57:59anything you see when god
58:02speaks to us it's mostly not audible
58:07um and some people receive understanding
58:10some people hear some people see and
58:15last week we spoke about the noah on the
58:18so it's hearing seeing or knowing and
58:21for some of you one of those functions
58:24than another i like that rendering and
58:26the king james version says when the
58:27holy spirit comes he will
58:29show you things to come and sometimes we
58:33you know we can have visions and dreams
58:35maybe there's literal
58:36sort of uh pictures that are in front of
58:39us but sometimes there's just
58:40facets in front of us we're seeing
58:43things we're seeing things and
58:44we keep on seeing things and sometimes
58:46i'm hearing things and sometimes i'm
58:48hearing a person's name or i'm hearing
58:50i'm hearing about you know doing this or
58:53traveling there or doing that and that
58:55and that's repeated and that lets me
58:56know that the holy spirit wants me
58:58to do something about this uh situation
59:02you know david young with joel the
59:04pastor of one of the largest churches in
59:07seoul korea he said the language of the
59:09holy spirit is visions and dreams
59:13so if you're expecting to hear audibly
59:15you're gonna miss the point
59:16because god wants to show you things not
59:20tell you things all right
59:23and of course uh just a couple of
59:24examples here and we'll close with this
59:27in acts chapter 20 verse 22 paul is
59:29speaking to the elders
59:31in in ephesus and he's
59:35traveling to jerusalem where he knew he
59:37was going to be captured
59:38and he was going to be tried and then he
59:40ended up appealing to season that's how
59:41he ended up in rome was able
59:43to preach the gospel there and there he
59:45says the holy spirit testifies in every
59:48the chains and tribulation awaited me
59:53how did that happen probably through
59:56probably through somebody speaking with
59:58a prophetic voice to say
01:00:00paul god is showing me something that
01:00:02you're on route to jerusalem
01:00:05and and we're seeing that there will be
01:00:07tribulation there for you
01:00:08and that there will be change you will
01:00:10be captured you will be locked up
01:00:12and of course if the elder said well
01:00:14paul don't go don't go
01:00:16he says what do you mean to break my
01:00:17heart like this is i'm ready to die for
01:00:20that's where i need to go and that's
01:00:21what i need to do but it was the holy
01:00:23spirit who showed him
01:00:25future events the holy spirit wants to
01:00:28of future things in our lives he wants
01:00:31to warn us of trouble
01:00:32that is up ahead so we can divert and
01:00:35move around it the holy spirit is
01:00:37here to show every single one of us uh
01:00:40about things to come so my friend uh i
01:00:44uh if you're not born again and i'm
01:00:48the folk from our internet audience if
01:00:50you're not born again and you have not
01:00:51surrendered jesus christ
01:00:52your life to jesus christ do so today it
01:00:55would be a shame to hear all this
01:00:56amazing teacher on the helper
01:00:58and not to receive him as our helper
01:01:00that's the most beautiful gift that we
01:01:02can do so why don't we just
01:01:03do this together right now if you pray
01:01:05this prayer you don't mind praying
01:01:06because i've prayed this prayer
01:01:07thousands of times
01:01:09and so why don't we do this just say
01:01:12lord jesus i receive you as my lord
01:01:17and my savior and right now
01:01:21i thank you for the beautiful gift
01:01:25of the holy spirit and now holy spirit
01:01:30i invite you to come into my heart
01:01:33to be my helper to be my leader
01:01:37to be my guide my standby
01:01:41my paraclete i thank you
01:01:44i receive you now in jesus name
01:01:49and i also receive
01:01:52the gift of speaking
01:01:55in a heavenly language i'm not afraid
01:02:00i open my mouth and i thank you
01:02:03that you give me the utterance in jesus
01:02:09amen and let's just open our lips right
