00:10change on the planet Nature once
00:13determined how we survive now we
00:17determine how nature survives
00:28three-quarters of the land surface and
00:31two-thirds of the ocean are impacted by
00:34our activities in the summer there is
00:3840% less Arctic sea ice cover than there
00:42was in 1980 almost half of our planets
00:47forests have been found for their timber
00:51and to make space for ourselves and our
00:54livestock and at sea our extensive
00:59overfishing is leading to the collapse
01:02of key fish stocks the card stocks
01:05crashed back home in Newfoundland
01:07burrows from and you know thousands of
01:10people thrown out of work boats beached
01:13canneries emptied and that was the real
01:16wake-up call that's where I began to
01:18understand there will be no jobs on a
01:20dead planet the destruction of our
01:24natural world is already costing us
01:27trillions of dollars every year
01:30suddenly the costs of the age of humans
01:33are outweighing the benefits we are at
01:37risk of entering a danger zone where we
01:39could trigger irreversible and self
01:42amplifying change which could push the
01:44whole planet ultimately away from the
01:47desired equilibrium we're at risk of
01:50destabilizing the whole planet we have
01:52just ten years to drastically alter our
01:55path before it will be too late to avoid
01:58catastrophic changes to our panicked
02:02we need revolutionary speed right we
02:04need a green revolution and it needs to
02:07happen at the scale and at the speed of
02:09the digital and Internet and mobile
02:11revolution and what drove the speed and
02:15scale of these revolutions business the
02:20same force that powered the last period
02:22of global change can also power the next
02:26the business sector has no option but to
02:29be a force for change successful
02:32businesses will embrace the clean
02:34technologies that now exist are we gonna
02:37run out of wind and sunshine in Texas
02:40before we run out of fossil fuels I'm
02:42betting on wind and solar first and
02:44foremost I'm a businessman and the
02:46original decision was just it was a
02:48business decision new ideas and land
02:51management strategies will help us
02:53protect our biodiversity and feed more
02:55people with less land the health of the
03:01ocean is critical to the way our planet
03:03operates future businesses will respect
03:08it as a resource that belongs to all of
03:10us only taking what it can naturally
03:13replace next generation businesses will
03:17design their product lines to fit within
03:19circular economies waste from one
03:23process becomes food for the next story
03:27source in the wrong place that's even
03:30true for carbon dioxide it's true for
03:32plastics it's true for everything that
03:34we think we're throwing away there is no
03:35away and so we need to create economies
03:37that actually have infrastructure that
03:39enable that circular design
03:46if you ask Millennials what is the
03:49purpose of business 47% said some
03:52version of the purpose of business is to
03:53improve society and protect the
03:56this is a fundamental sea change in the
03:58way an entire generation thinks about
04:01business it's gonna mean if you want to
04:03attract the top talent and retain them
04:06if you want to win over millennial
04:08customers and attract the 30 trillion
04:11dollars of capital that's currently
04:13being given to Millennials by the baby
04:16boomer generation you're gonna have to
04:17have a narrative around how your
04:19products are sustainable and healthy
04:22sustainability is now the only business
04:24plan I think that in the future when we
04:27look back there will be two types of
04:29companies companies that got it and
04:31companies that didn't get it I know
04:34which segment I'd like to belong to the
04:38only viable future is one in which
04:41business innovates to demand less of our
04:44world in that future the world will
04:48recover we can restore the balance of
04:52nature fix the relationship between our
04:56planet and our business
04:59and change the way we live on our planet
