01:34somehow McLaren managed to snatch
01:36controversy out of the jaws of a
01:38wonderful day oh my God just so you're
01:40so right after all the missed
01:41opportunities they missed the
01:43opportunity to just enjoy their win yeah
01:46and some garbled odd strategy decisions
01:49that I'm looking forward to discussing
01:51and the stappen fans will be delighted
01:53to hear that we're also joined by Brad
01:55philpart hello Brad I have had such a
01:58good weekend in in every area I've spent
02:00time with my friends I've watched really
02:02good racing in person and on the TV and
02:05now I'm here this couldn't be better
02:07well we're glad to have you here Brad
02:08and we're going to get straight into to
02:10the action by talking about that
02:13situation between Lando Norris and Oscar
02:16piastri and the McLaren tactics around
02:19it now obviously there's more to this
02:21race than just that swap over but I want
02:23to dive straight into it because there
02:25was also a rerun of 2021 V stappen and
02:29Hamilton battling with contact and the
02:31stewards making a decision I personally
02:33didn't agree with what year is this what
02:36year is it but I want to dive in and ask
02:40why on Earth did McLaren undercut Lando
02:45Norris with piastri in the first place
02:48so some Australians in our panel and I'm
02:50not going to name any Steves did not
02:53take that well so the second that
02:55happened there was instant suspicion so
02:57piastri fans already have it in their
02:59head that he's the number two driver but
03:01Brad you know at that point where they
03:04undercut him you go this doesn't and
03:08even the even the language of P them
03:10saying to pastri hey don't worry about
03:12Lando everything's okay but it could be
03:14don't worry because we don't want you to
03:16win yeah so obviously we were proven
03:19wrong on this but I agree with you when
03:21that happened initially I thought ah
03:23okay they're very sensible Norris has an
03:26outside very very outside but a real for
03:30the championship here we are in the
03:32second half of the Season just we've got
03:34most of we've got half the season
03:35roughly left to go and if it all falls
03:39off the edge of a cliff for Red Bull and
03:41if the Thea and Red Bull relationship
03:43goes really sour and everyone outd
03:45develops them Norris has a genuine Tilt
03:47at this title and so I thought okay this
03:50is a subtle way of McLaren well maybe
03:52not so subtle way of McLaren just
03:54manipulating the result here throwing
03:56piastre under the bus but you know he
03:58wasn't on pole and he probably wasn't
03:59right quicker so this is how this is how
04:02they're doing it and we were totally
04:03proven wrong because although I thought
04:05that was the right thing to do they then
04:07spent half an hour begging Lando to let
04:10him back through and there was another
04:12radio call that said to Norris don't
04:15worry we're fighting Hamilton our battle
04:17is with Hamilton and then some people
04:19were taking that to mean the well we're
04:21fighting Hamilton because you're
04:22settling for P2 but I I wondered whether
04:25that was don't worry you're fighting
04:27Hamilton will take care of piastri and
04:30then suddenly he gets the undercut and
04:32that was the second time in the race he
04:34got the undercut Kyle or got got the
04:37first decision sorry yeah so the first
04:39one it was kind of BN out of necessity
04:41really he had to cover off Hamilton
04:43behind but if you see Hamilton's middle
04:45stint was not particularly spectacular
04:47and he was slow so it's such a curious
04:49decision from McLaren because they
04:51actually had three four seconds cushion
04:53anyway so unless they were scared about
04:56uh a Duff Tire stop or them being held
04:58up in the pits didn't make much sense
05:00whatsoever and yeah Brad saying I
05:03thought initially like Brad saying oh
05:04that's a sneaky way of doing it like
05:06they want to get land ahead but they
05:07were genuinely thought they were I don't
05:09know what they were covering off and I
05:10think this points to and I mentioned it
05:11in the Silverstone podcast that they
05:13don't seem to have a lot of confidence
05:15in making like really decisive strategy
05:17decision decisions and it's like they're
05:19in a one twoo and they seemed they were
05:21overly nervous about protecting that so
05:23maybe they just got the Jitters and
05:24decided to react to something that they
05:26didn't really need to react to
05:29I I just want to pick up on your point
05:31there Kyle because I think you are
05:32correct they are not used to being in a
05:35position where they have both the front
05:36runner and second place and have to make
05:39decisions that will seem fair to the
05:42drivers so the big problem here I think
05:45for McLaren is they became concerned
05:48about Lewis Hamilton's Pace early on
05:50because the track temperature dropped
05:52from 49 down to almost 40 and Lewis was
05:55actually as fast as the McLaren so I
05:58think they there was some genuine
06:01concern there was some genuine concern
06:03that perhaps he might be a threat
06:05because he's on the hard Tire even
06:07though he pitted earlier it lasts longer
06:09they're on the medium tire and they're
06:11going to need to protect that and so
06:13they want to lose as little time to him
06:15and the other thing two other things
06:17came up one is the safety
06:19car the safety car um if the timing was
06:23wrong they might be on the wrong side of
06:25a pit stop and vulnerable to Hamilton or
06:28give Hamilton track position when they
06:29don't want to but the big thing was they
06:31kept Oscar out for two Labs at that
06:34second one and that's really what
06:35allowed that undercut to be a problem
06:38they have a very specific reason for
06:39doing that they wanted to reduce the
06:42offset to Max vers stappen who pitted on
06:45lap 49 versus his lap 47 so there they
06:49did have another reason for doing it but
06:51the problem is all of these things were
06:53very low probability issues and that's
06:56where they got it wrong so I just take a
06:58slight issue with you saying it was the
07:00two laps that made the difference cuz I
07:02was watching the one lap after Norris um
07:05was allowed to undercut and he was
07:06already on the predictor ahead of
07:09piastri before the end of that first lap
07:11so he'd already made enough back just on
07:13his outl that it wouldn't have mattered
07:15if piastri pitted on the you know the
07:17very next lap it was still going to be
07:19Norris slightly ahead um my fiance I am
07:22going to give her credit for this
07:23because her suggestion I mean I mean
07:26this thing I personally thought of is
07:28the real reason I think McLaren think
07:31the the driver's title is so unlikely
07:34that they're just more happy to bank the
07:36constructor's championship and they were
07:38doing everything Matt just said to be as
07:40safe as possible for the overall team
07:42points and they don't really care which
07:44of the drivers finished ahead and they
07:46wanted to be super fair and it's nice
07:48for the team if piastri gets his first
07:49win whereas Norris obviously is thinking
07:52no no don't give up on me yet we now
07:54have a car which is clearly the fastest
07:56and I've got a teammate who's and this
07:58is different to Red Bull I have a
07:59teammate who's quick enough to get in
08:01between me and the guy in the other team
08:04so there's a chance here you could still
08:05win the championship so why waste
08:07another opportunity to maximize that
08:10points Gap and uh anyway yeah I think
08:13it's mlar focused on the constructors
08:14he's second and I'll just do the points
08:16there before Kyle comes in So ven's
08:18currently on
08:20265 and Norris is on 189 so that is a
08:2576 76 Point difference a huge season
08:30three dnfs that all that's all that
08:32takes for vasten three dnfs that's
08:34assuming Norris and vasten score equally
08:36now for the rest of the season if Norris
08:38scores better than vapen that could be
08:41down to two or maybe one dnf that he
08:43needs to win the championship and
08:44they've today have thrown away a
08:46seven-point potential advantage and Mia
08:49F1 in our Patron live chat points out as
08:51well there are engine penalties coming
08:53in as well so this title is not as sewn
08:55up do you mean you go next week and
08:57verafin gets caught up in a few
08:58incidents and Norris wins and suddenly
09:00it looks game one again doesn't it and
09:01that 76 would have been 69 if they'd
09:05have let Norris win that feels that's
09:08quite a big difference actually K I know
09:10are you already changing your mind
09:11spanners about our pre-ra chat yeah I I
09:13started changing my mind um in the
09:15pre-show call actually but we we'll see
09:17we'll see how I get I'm not all the way
09:18there yet
09:20Kyle yeah that is quite a big gap but
09:22I'm kind of more aligned with McLaren's
09:24thinking I mean at the start of the
09:26Season particularly it all looked like
09:27it was completely over and I still think
09:28maybe there that mindset of it's just
09:30too far gone we're never going to we're
09:32never going to have this so I think
09:33they've played into the uh they've also
09:36played into the goal of they now have
09:38two race winners as drivers that's going
09:40to boost pastry's confidence as well so
09:42I agree with Matt they've just purely
09:43gone purely um just settling or M Brady
09:46said they're purely set settling for
09:48second in the championship but what
09:50aggravated this whole situation and made
09:52it look much worse than it actually was
09:54or should have been was Oscar actually
09:56wasn't very good in the final stint and
09:58he said so it he wasn't
10:01fast he wasn't fast and Norris and they
10:04left the door wide open for Norris just
10:06to prove a point and make that awkward
10:07so if if if Oscar was faster it wouldn't
10:09have been so awkward um okay so to set
10:12the scene there Matt and this is where
10:14we get into the strategy
10:15side it to me that doesn't matter that
10:20piastri was a little bit slower like I
10:22don't argue that at all Norris was the
10:24faster driver today he was the fastest
10:25on Saturday as well not by a huge amount
10:28but he got Paul
10:29however track position is so key here
10:32that if you'd have pitted piastri first
10:34there was enough of a gap Norris would
10:36have come out behind it would have been
10:37exactly the same and I don't think
10:39Norris is quick enough over him to have
10:41a Delta to overtake so I you know well
10:45okay Matt disagree with me but I think
10:47it's that kind of they're fairly even
10:48and Norris gets into the dirty air and
10:50it starts to become you know a big
10:52equalizer it's it's hungaro ring you
10:54need a strategy offset to
10:57overtake well I think you just need to
10:59be close enough into the final turn to
11:01have the DRS be effective by time you
11:03get to what is it turn three once you go
11:06around turn one and turn two or that
11:08left-hander you know the what I mean I
11:10for me the for me the the issue with
11:13McLaren is very simple that pass nor is
11:16winning the race needed to happen on
11:18track if it was going to happen because
11:21if they didn't fix the issue for
11:24Oscar then the then if I'm pastry and
11:27Brad you know you you can tell me how
11:29right this is but if I'm pastry and they
11:31say oh we'll fix it and then they don't
11:33fix it next time they come on the radio
11:35and say um yeah so Lando could take the
11:37lead in the driver's Championship if
11:39you'll let him buy now I'd be like okay
11:42let him pass me if he can yeah and that
11:44would be the end of it that would be the
11:46absolute end of it I would do no favors
11:48for him or the team ever again ever and
11:51maybe that's just me as a New Yorker but
11:53no but now Norris has got to do
11:55ultimately the maths which is how many
11:57times is it going to be me required to
11:59to let someone through Oscar through
12:01because he's been ahead generally and
12:03how many times is it going to be We've
12:04Ended up in a situation with him ahead
12:06but I'm much faster that's the more
12:08common situation and I think that is
12:11finally the argument that got through to
12:13Lando norrris because here's my question
12:14to you Brad at what point did Norris
12:17decide that he was actually going to let
12:21Oscar through because my suspition is
12:24all the way until he actually did it he
12:26wasn't going to do it yeah so I agree I
12:30I was fully I was tweeting about this at
12:31the time I did not expect Lando to let
12:34him through right right up until they
12:37blackmailed him enough that he had to so
12:41when they started saying you need us and
12:43Oscar on your side in order to win a
12:46championship that that really that is
12:48blackmail that's what that is it's
12:49saying if you don't do this thing then
12:52we are going to make life difficult for
12:54you in the future side and exactly and I
12:57think that's a little bit dis uous of
12:59McLaren because Lando is stuck with them
13:02and not jump shipped to McLaren despite
13:04offers when McLaren were terrible when
13:06they were like last place in the
13:08championship so I think McLaren having
13:10screwed up this strategy today and doing
13:13done an unnecessary undercut put him in
13:15a position where he is out in clear air
13:17out front and pulling away and
13:18demonstrating he is really the faster
13:20driver he put it on pole as well but for
13:22a bad upshift into second gear he would
13:24have been leading the race anyway I
13:26think it's a little bit bad of McLaren
13:27to put him in this position and and then
13:29pressure him through the rest of the
13:31race to swap around and I just want to
13:33say I think this is a very very
13:35different situation to having an
13:37agreement with the driver beforehand
13:40like over the radio saying okay Lando we
13:43think we're under threat from um Lewis
13:46we're going to pick you early but that
13:48is in the under the understanding that
13:49you're going to let your teammate back
13:50through later if Lando says yeah that's
13:52fine then that's that's a totally
13:55different situation if you're just going
13:56about your race you get told to pit on a
13:58certain lap and you come out in front of
14:00your teammate then all bets are off in
14:02my opinion and I think that's really I
14:05would feel extremely grieved in Lando's
14:07position that I'm the guy in second in
14:09the championship you know the only one
14:11that's in the hunt for the the
14:12championship you know this is the
14:14biggest thing in World Motorsport the
14:16biggest prize available and you're in a
14:18position and your team your team itself
14:21is essentially taking away an
14:23opportunity to maximize your points I
14:25don't blame Lando Norris for fighting
14:26his corner right but cuz I'm not all the
14:29way over yet cuz I'm still on let
14:31piastri have the win that you took away
14:33from him with the undercut cuz I'm still
14:34in that camp then the execution of that
14:38was really really really poor so whilst
14:41you're saying the blackmail was bad I
14:43actually think you ask or you say it's a
14:46team order be clear it's a team order
14:48let's move okay we really need to get
14:49this done now then I think it's
14:51perfectly fine to pull the team
14:53principal trigger that's when you get
14:55your Paddy low Christian hor her this is
14:58silly Seb your uh Ross Brawn where with
15:02Hamilton and rosberg your James vs your
15:05Rob Smedley Fernando is faster than you
15:07that's the moment where you stamp it
15:09down and I think I'm going to lend you
15:10my teenagers to look after for a weekend
15:12Brad and by the end of it you will be
15:15straight line
15:17disciplinarian go come back on that I
15:19think um unless we're saying that the
15:22race ends at turn one and whoever gets
15:24to the first Corner first is the guy
15:26that we're going to let win the race
15:28during the middle of the race when
15:29you're in crucial strategy um period I
15:32think you if you don't give Lando the
15:34option if the if his strategy engineer
15:36doesn't come over and say right we've
15:37got an opportunity to beat your teammate
15:39here do you want to undercut do you want
15:40to go for a longer stint but stop
15:42earlier and he says yes or no until that
15:45has been discussed you can't have this
15:47whole let's be super fair to everyone
15:49okay Lando we're we're trying to cover
15:51off someone who's well behind you um and
15:55then that removes a potential strategy
15:57option from him I just think it's a the
15:59entire thing is McLaren McLaren's
16:02orchestration and McLaren's
16:04problem I disagree with Brad pretty much
16:08entirely
16:09there fine so so with with um you know
16:13with McLaren they should have been more
16:14forthright and more forceful with Lando
16:16straight off the bat they did ask him
16:18they said don't worry we've only pitted
16:20you to protect Hamilton we want to swap
16:22the positions back they said that
16:23immediately as soon as he left the Box
16:25pretty much they they were too soft with
16:27him they left it down to his own discrep
16:28aggression in the things they're to
16:30stoft so and Lando we're going to flip
16:31them back now there's a whole another
16:33Dynamic to this where Lando could have
16:35played this differently if Lando would
16:38have let him back immediately Lando
16:40could have then attacked him for the
16:41rest of the race and tried to win it
16:43that way I think Lando immediately
16:45thought okay I'm going I'm going to
16:48prove a point I'm going to pull so so
16:49long and make it an impossible decision
16:51for them to make but actually if if
16:54McLaren more forth right with it and
16:55just said let him back through now Lando
16:58that is a direct instruction no rures uh
17:01he actually would have had a better
17:02chance at getting pastri by the end of
17:04the race
17:05anyway well yeah this is the thing I
17:09agree with Brad this ultimately is
17:11McLaren's fault they needed to have been
17:14clear with L before he pitted that it
17:16was only to keep him safe from Hamilton
17:19in their View and that he would need to
17:21give piastri the position back when
17:23Oscar pitted then we don't have this
17:26problem and maybe we get a really great
17:28race between Norris and piastri to the
17:30end which we were also kind of robbed
17:33of which McLaren wouldn't have minded
17:35either I don't think if uh if they'd
17:37have had that because they did initially
17:39say you guys can race that's fine
17:41so but even worse there I was sitting
17:45there thinking oh my goodness look at
17:48look at baby oscar he's grown up he can
17:50finally manage his tires he's
17:52maintaining a gap over Norris then we
17:54get to this last stin Norris does that
17:56and I'm like oh hang on a minute B
17:59Norris was just hanging out chilling
18:01waiting for the last ENT to where he
18:03knew he would have the maximum advantage
18:05and he was going to pass pastry who
18:07still isn't quite there the way Norris
18:09is which brings me on to McLaren's lies
18:13McLaren on the radio to Norris saying we
18:16think we think your tire management is
18:18not good enough in turn 1 three five and
18:20nine Oh no you're still you're you're
18:22not going to make it to the end Lando oh
18:24no yes it was it was entire light I mean
18:28it was that was crazy what trust is your
18:31driver going to have in you for the rest
18:32of the season if you have clearly he
18:35knows he's he knows what he's doing he's
18:37extending the life to the end he's not
18:38overdriving he would have he would have
18:40gone quicker than that and then fallen
18:41off he he was quick enough and careful
18:45enough with the tires that he pulled a
18:47gap and had enough Pace to stay on on
18:49the leader you know when he eventually
18:51let him through until the end it was in
18:53it was absolute blatantly false what
18:56McLaren were telling their driver over
18:58the radio and it that also goes to show
19:01that this is not McLaren were not being
19:04super squeaky clean here and they were
19:06trying to get themselves out of a ho
19:07that they knew they had got themselves
19:09at the very least it was emotional
19:10blackmail KY wasn't it like oh Zach
19:13Zach's crying down the phone like is
19:15that what you want you want Zach to be
19:17sad on his golf meetings yeah Zach's on
19:20his golf trip and you're ruining it
19:21you're ruining indie car I was just
19:23about to say this is like somebody the
19:25uh things that parents say to kids I'm
19:27not a parent but if you don't eat your
19:29vegetabl you're going have to go to bed
19:30early or the boogeyman's going to come
19:31and get you they should have just been
19:33really strong and just go Lando stop
19:35being a pratt and letting through like
19:36just come straight over and just gone
19:38straight to it and just told him and I
19:39think orando would have just done it but
19:40the fact that they kept opening the door
19:42for him to abuse it a little bit more it
19:44was like when you don't want to go to
19:45bed as a kid and you keep saying oh was
19:46someone this some of this and keep going
19:48they they let that happen so so no no
19:50Matt look this is it from now on right
19:53the pit wall should only have parents of
19:55teenagers because that is the ultimate
19:57training I think for this situ ation
19:59like if you if you car's right if you
20:01give them even a centimeter they will
20:03Hammer a wedge through it they will
20:05lawyer their way into uh owning your car
20:08and your house before you're even aware
20:10of it it's it's astonishing but I will
20:12say this is a lot better on the drama
20:15front than Max on the radio going oh I
20:18think I felt something strange so I will
20:19hand it to McLaren they did create
20:22maximum team drama for us in a way that
20:25others have
20:26not I just think you can't
20:29you can't have a situation where you've
20:31have two drivers in a team who are both
20:33potentially quick enough to win the race
20:36and you're trying to manage them in the
20:38same team you need to have the different
20:41sides of the pit wall allowed to try and
20:44beat the other one because essentially
20:45Lando was robbed of the opportunity to
20:47legitimately beat piastri because this
20:50race was difficult to pass on track it
20:52was about undercutting people or you
20:55know it was about doing the correct
20:56strategy to get yourself ahead on track
20:58and if Lando was allowed to work with
21:00his personal engineer and they weren't
21:02trying to fight against piastri within
21:04the same team he probably would have
21:05said okay do do you want to undercut
21:08Oscar we can we can stop now and
21:10probably get out in front and he would
21:11have gone yes and then he would have got
21:13ahead had more Pace pulled away and
21:16there would have been no discussion or
21:17even a big long overcut with an actual
21:19Tire Delta because he did look strong
21:21enough to attempt something like that
21:23mat but but as it happened he was he
21:25didn't have that opportunity his only
21:27chance was to beat into turn one or
21:29overtake on track and overtaking on
21:31track as we saw with other drivers
21:33wasn't easy so it we were robbed of or
21:36he at least was robbed of that
21:38opportunity the reason you can't quite
21:41do that is because you would wind up
21:43with both your drivers pitting on
21:44exactly the same lap without enough time
21:46between them to to properly change both
21:49their tires somebody has to get priority
21:53on the pit call now I think it's fair to
21:55say to your leading driver which
21:57strategy do you want to go for and let
21:59them choose and then offer the other
22:01driver the other strategy I think that
22:03seems reasonable but you can't just let
22:05the two sides of the garage fight as
22:07Mercedes found out with rosberg and
22:09Hamilton back in
22:112016 can I say something positive about
22:14McLaren because we've just pretty much
22:16decked them out from the start of this
22:18episode okay no no that's true but but
22:19can I can I should we get all the
22:21negative out of the way then because
22:22I've got one last negative thing one
22:24last negative one last negative thing to
22:26say is I I think they the way they
22:28handled it ruined the win so the the wi
22:31was completely ruined by the stressin
22:33and it's like it doesn't matter that you
22:35were at the theme park and got to go on
22:36all the rides you were arguing and
22:38bickering the whole way around and now
22:40everybody is stressed the celebrations
22:42were muted no one came out of that
22:44looking good the pit wall looked a
22:46little weak to be honest and then you
22:48had rosberg on Sky TV giving a full list
22:51of commands to Andrea Stella about what
22:53he should do next time Stella looks
22:55pretty pretty peeved and then went okay
22:58thank you for your Vice counsel I'll
22:59take that on board uh piastri sorry I'll
23:02start with Norris I think Norris came
23:04out of that looking really really bad
23:06even though no well see Brad's the racer
23:09and I I agree he was doing everything in
23:11his head to get over the line but that
23:13was obviously against team policy But
23:16ultimately it looks in the end like
23:18pastry's first win was given to him in
23:20the end to me that is what it ends up
23:23looking like I think almost better off
23:25not having it after that just go yeah
23:28just just go you know the fact is when
23:30Lando Norris was saying catch up with me
23:31and I'll let you past that was that was
23:34the you know pull pull your pants down
23:36show me what you've got moment wasn't
23:37it I honestly think Lando did not come
23:40out that looking bad I think unless you
23:43are looking for your sports people to be
23:46ultra squeaky clean be extremely moral
23:50in every situation which none of the
23:53very best ones tend to be I think Lando
23:57did almost everything right I think the
23:59only thing he did wrong was Bend to the
24:01pressure of the team when they said you
24:04you know if you don't let your teammate
24:06through us and him won't be on your side
24:08for the rest of the year I think he
24:10could have very well if it was me I've
24:12got a lot a list of very strong
24:14arguments I would be presenting to them
24:16in the debrief to say why you definitely
24:19will be um supporting me for the rest of
24:21the year and this was your issue in the
24:23first place and don't you dare put me
24:25back in this position in the future
24:27because this is all all ridiculous and
24:29none of this was orchestrated by me and
24:31also next time if there's an undercut
24:33opportunity you bloom and well tell me
24:35and don't just pit me and then say
24:37afterwards oh yeah you've got to give me
24:38you got to make sure the position gets
24:39given back Brad's one beer away from and
24:41another thing no it's it's all good
24:44point I love the passion you you're
24:46almost converting me almost Matt well
24:49this is the interesting thing I'm going
24:51to agree and disagree with you um my
24:54family has now started watching all the
24:57Formula 1 race
24:59and guess what they agree with Brad they
25:02think it was unfair that Lando's Victory
25:05got taken away from him just as
25:07interesting regular fans watching the
25:09race not not involved in the intricacies
25:13like I like to be so I think that's a
25:15pretty interesting take so in a way I
25:17think Lando's strategy worked out very
25:19well for him he doesn't look selfish at
25:20all he looks like he had the win
25:22unfairly taken away and maybe that's
25:24what he
25:25wanted um I think Lando looked bad
25:27during the race but then completely
25:29exonerated himself in the interviews
25:31afterwards where he was absolutely like
25:33fair play and said Oscar you know
25:35deserved it he got the better start he
25:36drove really well and of course I'll
25:38obey to the team orders I think he saved
25:40a lot of face there at the end of the
25:42race but you know let's Kos to McLaren I
25:44think they were like 13 14 seconds ahead
25:47of the next car in the end uh they've
25:48got a onew even with all of them kffl
25:51out the front Oscar pastri getting his
25:53first race win and you could see how
25:55much it meant to him he was so elated he
25:57raised his eyebrow when he got out of
25:58the car he was absolutely over the moon
26:02and it was amazing to see his raw
26:03emotion so so much so our video editor
26:06Steve Amy who of course has been on the
26:07show uh has the power to delete this
26:10Channel and stop the stream and he's
26:11just said Lando's win wtf1 I I uh I
26:15agree with him in the end it was Lando's
26:18win taken away but the fact that he got
26:20undercut past piastri took away pastry's
26:23win he was in the lead he had track
26:25position Lando was going to have to try
26:26and pass him on track
26:28pastry's win got taken away by Norris
26:31undercutting him unnecessarily there was
26:33no need to defend from Hamilton Brad so
26:35past's win did get taken away from him
26:38before it got given back this is this
26:40tricky thing I was mentioning earlier
26:42where you have two drivers in the same
26:43team who are trying to out strategize
26:45each each other so I think the only fair
26:49way to do this is to on the same lap
26:52present options for strategy to both
26:54Lando and Oscar and say look do you want
26:57to stop before or after your teammate
26:59you know it's probably an advantage to
27:00stop before but but you're then going to
27:02obviously have a longer stint the driver
27:05that's at the in the lead would normally
27:07have the pick and if that had happened I
27:08wouldn't I'd have no complaints in this
27:10race but the fact of the matter is they
27:12gave the preferential strategy to the
27:14driver behind I don't think he asked for
27:17it I think that was just how it was
27:18presented to him had he been given the
27:20option he probably would have taken that
27:22even if it was a risk because Oscar
27:25could have been told look Lando's
27:26stopping a lap early but if you do fast
27:28in laap we're going to stop you on the
27:29next lap you'll probably still come out
27:31ahead there could have been all sorts of
27:33permutations but if all the information
27:35was given to everyone and they chose
27:37incorrectly or they executed incorrectly
27:40then the cards fall however they do but
27:42it seemed today that one driver was out
27:44front you know minding his own business
27:46pestre wasn't doing anything wrong there
27:48was a driver behind who still obviously
27:49thought he was in with a shout for the
27:51win he was given the strategy to give
27:53him the win which was then that was his
27:55one real opportunity to actually take
27:57the win that was then removed from him
27:59afterwards and he even said on the radio
28:01I would have undercut him anyway if I'd
28:02been given the chance Lando would have
28:05done that I reckon even if he was given
28:07the chance to to stop a bit too early
28:09you know he would have still gone for it
28:11and then backed himself to have the
28:13better Tire life towards the end of the
28:14race so I just think it was unfair to to
28:17give him the candy and then take it away
28:19but they were giving him a team order
28:21and Norris was doing everything he could
28:23to ignore that team order that does have
28:26repercussions down the road
28:28yeah but it was a dumb team order and
28:30that's why I'm on Norris's side he was
28:32given a team order which was totally
28:34against basic logic if you want to win
28:37the championship if McLaren have said to
28:39the drivers up front we don't care about
28:41the driver's Championship we're in this
28:42for the constructors then that's fine if
28:44we're all on the same page but they
28:46didn't I don't think they said that I
28:48think Norris still thinks he's got an
28:49outside
28:51shot which brings us to a very large
28:55question which is we're kind of ignoring
28:57the fact there's a reason we're arguing
28:59about this so much and it is I believe
29:02that McLaren might have the fastest car
29:05now okay so that you're trying to sort
29:09of draw that topic to an end then
29:11because that merges into max ven's race
29:14so the last thing I wanted to really say
29:16on um on the Norris thing was I don't
29:19actually think he was doing anything
29:21particularly wrong morally to try and
29:24win that race but from a management
29:26organizational point of view the team
29:28radio was very very clear and if he was
29:31going to follow that team order maybe
29:33follow the team order after the third
29:35time of trying so the British tradition
29:37is very much kind of oh no no no are you
29:40sure and then you know after three
29:41that's our rule in Britain we kind of
29:43have a a rule of three um so you know
29:45his EXC he did even have to be asked to
29:48confirm His Radio was working so let's
29:51be clear if we think that Lando Norris
29:53you know was entitled to that win or was
29:54the faster driver was the better driver
29:56there is an outstanding issue there
29:58there which was he was going out of his
29:59way to do everything he could to defy a
30:01team order to the point that the team
30:03had to remind him that there would be
30:06consequences in the nicest possible way
30:08of ignoring those team orders something
30:10to look out for the Future Okay so we're
30:12asking a bigger question then did
30:14McLaren have the faster car today where
30:16we're straying more into the technical
30:19we'll we'll put a pin in that question
30:21as we move on to talking about Max V
30:23staffin race
30:30oh my goodness what a race Max vapen had
30:34incredibly uh eventful perhaps uh got
30:37caught up in the carbon fiber Zone from
30:40the very beginning from the very first
30:42turn he was on an adventure off track he
30:46got muscled off at turn one claimed he
30:49was pushed off so we could examine that
30:52first then he gets into a situation
30:56where he finds himself undercut from
30:57from the cars behind while he's doing
31:00his best to manage his tires while also
31:02unable to get out ahead of the cars
31:04ahead and then seems to have his race
31:06completely ruined by that battle with
31:08Max V stappen and then gets undercut
31:10again but this time by two cars and then
31:13eventually has a a critical coming
31:16together with Lewis Hamilton but but
31:19what an adventure from an off key Max
31:22ven so from my point of view guys I
31:24think from the last race where I said I
31:27don't think he had the best car and he
31:29did everything right to finish second I
31:32think he almost had a perfect race last
31:34time out at silverston and did
31:36everything he could didn't Panic as the
31:37tires were were going wrong for him held
31:39it all together and finished P2 against
31:42the odds today Brad I don't think he
31:44could have had a worse race not just
31:46from a racing point of view not just
31:48from how the strategy went for him but
31:50also with the Optics of how he came
31:53across to the world as well this was
31:55just an A Day To Forget for ven
31:58we've had three races in a row where Max
32:00has been under pressure so we've had
32:02Austria where he was out front but then
32:04McLaren came on strong and I I would
32:07argue he cracked under pressure and and
32:09drove illegally and then there were
32:10consequences but fortunately for him he
32:12didn't suffer the the worst part of
32:14those consequences Silverstone so the
32:16second of these three he did the best
32:18job possible and I think he came out
32:20with probably the best result available
32:22there and then we get here today to
32:24Hungary and we have like the the worst
32:26case so he's kind of had a middle a a
32:29best and a worst case so he's averaged
32:31out roughly probably where he should be
32:34um at the end of that and I think what
32:36we're really seeing again I'm going to
32:37credit my fiance with with this one is
32:41what he said best in his own interview
32:43after the race in in the post race um
32:46the the press conference or not the
32:47press conference sorry because he wasn't
32:48in the top three but in the the media
32:50pen where he said well if the team
32:52hadn't put me in this position then this
32:54this wouldn't have happened and
32:55essentially that boils down to if the
32:58team hadn't put me in a position where
33:00I'd had to race I wouldn't have had to
33:02actually race people and drive you know
33:04within the rules and multiple times
33:06today he either was on the wrong side of
33:10the rules by breaking them and then
33:12having to give back a position or
33:14complaining that other people weren't
33:16doing the thing he expected them to do
33:18essentially he was in this carbon fiber
33:20Zone where he was actually having to
33:21battle and he hasn't ever looked that
33:25good when he's in that position and so
33:28he's having the results that you would
33:29expect him to have in in that
33:32position so there's really a couple of
33:34interesting things here to observe but
33:37the big one is that the updates that
33:41have come just to Max's Car and just for
33:44this these kinds of races have made him
33:48actually less competitive because he
33:50could not pass the Mercedes at the at
33:54the end of the straight into turn one
33:56and even though he was clearly faster in
33:58a lot of Corners it wound up being
34:01useless speed because he couldn't get
34:04round
34:05Kyle yeah and it was interesting to hear
34:08him say that one of his first complaints
34:09where he where he started to get more
34:11and more heated and that was after going
34:13wide when he was trying to get round
34:15Lewis saying I'm running at minus5 on
34:18The Brak balance that's minus 5% so say
34:21if they're probably I don't know 60
34:2340ish probably around he's like 5% more
34:26to the back than what he usually would
34:27what what their usual neutral brake
34:29balance would be and he said he's still
34:31struggling with under steer and he's
34:33getting really frustrated it's well
34:34publicized everyone knows that Max likes
34:37a car on the nose these new updates
34:39clearly have taken that front end away
34:42from him and is really really struggling
34:44in his outside his comfort zone we
34:46didn't get a good read on it because
34:47Perry has actually had quite a strong
34:48race this race with the other Speck of
34:50car so we didn't get like a read on
34:53whether Max was outperforming this
34:54package or not but like I said at
34:56silverston in the pod this is crazy at
34:58the start of the year it was total Doom
35:00and Gloom and looked like domination and
35:01now red bu somehow are slipping
35:03backwards and backwards and starting to
35:06implode on the inside so it was amazing
35:08like um to to actually hear him moaning
35:10that ferociously about the balance of
35:12his car after the updates oh it's not
35:14just not not just complaining about the
35:15balance of the car before the the race
35:18he was talking about people in and
35:20people need to wake up um in his team
35:23and people need to like start uh making
35:26the updates better so he's instead of
35:28doing that internally you know he's out
35:30and out there just going yeah the car is
35:31not good enough and people need to sort
35:33it out so and and then you know that's
35:35followed up Brad with the second things
35:37went wrong with the strategy really
35:40really you know we're used to the lou
35:42Hamilton passive aggressive like after
35:45the pit stop not before that was the
35:46wrong Tire guys you know like yeah but
35:49we didn't hear you saying that before
35:50whereas ven was really like all guns
35:53blazing and his race engineer um uh
35:56sorry G P jeanpierre lambier thank you
36:00um was also equally just chessed out not
36:04accepting it Brad the whole Optics
36:07coming out of Team ven to me feels like
36:11he's lost the team a little bit that
36:13that's how it feels he's lost the
36:14dressing room as they'd say with the
36:16football manager so I actually don't
36:18take particular issue with Max calling
36:21his team on on their errors you know I
36:23think it's probably quite a good trait
36:25for a top driver to be trying to be on
36:28top of everyone that needs to do a good
36:31job because you know that the complete
36:32package is required to to get the
36:34ultimate performance but what amuses me
36:37and I am going to take a little bit of
36:39of satisfaction in this uh in this
36:41particular Point what amuses me is that
36:43under the slightest pressure the team
36:46falls apart the team that I personally
36:48and I'm not going to hide this and
36:49anyone who follows me on social media
36:51will know this I do not like the Red
36:54Bull team I think they've cultured an
36:55absolutely toxic culture over the last
36:58shocked I wish said something to be
37:00honest I think they've had horrendously
37:03preferential treatment in certain
37:04decisions I mean just look at today just
37:06one example of today where and I know
37:08we'll probably go into the detail of
37:09this later but where Max makes an
37:11obvious error and crashes into Lewis
37:12Hamilton he's unbelievable misses the
37:14Apex locks the wheels runs wide and and
37:16the stewards call that shared
37:18responsibility and say no driver was
37:20predominantly at fault and one driver
37:21was absolutely innocent with doing
37:23nothing wrong at all actually delaying
37:25their turn into the corner to avoid an
37:27incident and another driver hits them
37:29and could have potentially taken them
37:30out that's deemed a shared
37:31responsibility anyway one one example of
37:33an absolute catalog of preferential
37:36treatment for the Red Bull team and you
37:38know on top of their um the cost cap
37:41breaches the terrible personal life
37:45dramas of of high-profile members of the
37:47team anyway I'm not a fan is what I'm
37:49trying to say but I don't take issue
37:51with Max trying to pull his team up on
37:53on doing the most professional job
37:55possible but when Max gets pressured in
37:57racing situations in a series that has
38:00literally changed the rules to
38:02accommodate his style of driving and he
38:04can't even drive to his own preferential
38:07rules and gets run wide because you're
38:09now allowed to run people wide on the
38:10exits of corners and then complains
38:12about it um later on argues that
38:14Hamilton didn't leave a macars with
38:16despite having all four wheels within
38:18the white lines of the track when in the
38:20very same corner on the first lap he
38:22actually ran Hamilton fully off the
38:23track it is absolutely unbearable
38:27hypocrisy
38:28and it gives me great joy to see the
38:30downfall of that team happen in front of
38:32M okay okay well firstly just clipping
38:3540 minutes 38 seconds for Tik Tok clip
38:38okay good good so that that's there now
38:41there does seem to be like just a little
38:42bit of lack of awareness when he's
38:43talking about moving in the breaking
38:44Zone and being pushed off and he said
38:47right is I'll tell the FIA then in that
38:49case I I I'm going to push everyone else
38:51off for the rest of the race if that's
38:53the rules now I thought that showed
38:55either zero that must be zero awareness
38:57that he's got a reputation for doing
38:59specifically that thing and here's
39:02here's what Red Bull and vapen have done
39:04incredibly and did really really well in
39:062021 was putting massive pressure on the
39:09stewards so you had Christian herner you
39:11know there's a touch at silverston
39:12Hamilton predominantly to blame
39:14according to the stewards no genu no
39:16real issue with that obviously vapen was
39:19punished in a sort of self- policing way
39:21um but then for Christian heret to come
39:23out and say it's attempted murder that
39:26is borderline slander bringing the sport
39:28into disrepute but you're you're trying
39:30to influence the stewards so that they
39:32will make a decision so today because
39:34they've done that they've put that
39:35pressure on that's prob I think that's
39:37probably influenced the the second
39:38decision well oh okay if we give him a
39:40penalty now it's going to really really
39:42kick
39:45off yeah and I I kind of to try to pose
39:50a bit of balance I'm going to slightly
39:52attempt to defend Max slightly here I'm
39:56going to agree I'm going to agree with
39:59some of the stuff that Brad said in that
40:01yeah I'm not a particular fan in how Red
40:03Bull tend to conduct themselves in this
40:05slightly disingenuous way of yeah the
40:07mudslinging the the kind of the
40:09gaslighting I think is what they're
40:10often accused of isn't it of saying
40:12stuff and we have seen this over the
40:13years look of their relationship with
40:14Renault back in like 2010s and and and
40:17Els and how that kind of fell out and
40:20stuff so yeah I don't know how they go
40:22about and they kind of have made their
40:23own bed and this sort of layer of
40:25toxicity but Max displays these sort of
40:29outbursts and but we've seen this before
40:32I think this is just the mentality of a
40:34ruthless Natural Born winner and the
40:37champion like he genuinely believes he
40:39doesn't see the hypocrisy he he doesn't
40:41have the self-awareness because he
40:43generally believes everything he does is
40:45Right we've seen the same attitude from
40:47Senna before from maybe from schumacker
40:49we've seen this before of just this
40:50absolute I am never wrong and I will win
40:53at all costs and I don't care what
40:54anyone else thinks and I generally don't
40:56think Max cares how he comes across he
40:58is just a natural born aggressive winner
41:01and always in Red Bull he has never been
41:03told no I think it's the first time I've
41:05ever heard the team kind of stand up to
41:07him a little bit and this is kind of you
41:10know you so of course he going to think
41:12that way if he's never been told no
41:14we've seen it with kids and stuff think
41:16you know who are never told no and then
41:17completely freak
41:19out when when they are when it's not
41:21going well so in Max's defense a bit I
41:24think he's just such a ruthless Natural
41:26Born winner that he genuinely sees it
41:28his way and doesn't see some of the
41:31hypocrisy in that so that's a semi sort
41:33of Defense to why he can come across
41:34like that sometimes because all he's
41:36thinking is I'm winning and I don't care
41:38how so you're you're saying it's almost
41:41like his his radio engineer GP said it's
41:44almost childish you know he's acting
41:46childish
41:48yeah
41:50Matt but I
41:52just I actually agree with Kyle I think
41:55if you were going to be a champion
41:57you have to have a certain amount of
42:00ruthlessness and you have to
42:03psychologically be able to take certain
42:06situations and understand or feel you're
42:09on the right side of them or it becomes
42:11a hindrance do you actually doing what
42:13you need to do to
42:15win um but what interests me is that
42:19this was from the off going on from the
42:24first turn one incident where they said
42:27we think you have to give this position
42:29back rightfully so because I think the
42:31FIA was looking at where pastry's axle
42:34was in relationship to vers sapen in
42:36terms of well yeah know you were the
42:38third person into that corner and very
42:41clearly the first person was ahead of
42:42you the second person reacted to the
42:44first person and that means you don't
42:46have a claim and yet you drove off track
42:48pinned the accelerator and actually
42:50pushed Hamilton off and gained a
42:52position you probably shouldn't have had
42:54there yeah look that's such that's such
42:55a minor part of it is the fact actually
42:57pushed Hamilton off and that doesn't
42:59even start to touch the sides really I
43:01mean again when he went off track gained
43:04an advantage from doing that the sort of
43:06the thing that the Mercedes did which I
43:08criticized them for to be fair was to
43:11you know swap the place back and so ven
43:14was saying we'll just let the FIA make
43:15the decision which I don't think is
43:17entirely unfair if you think that that's
43:19fine then Force the FIA to make the
43:22decision but it it took a long time and
43:24it's almost like Red Bull had quite a
43:26long long time to then give vapen the
43:30advice to swap over and so I just I
43:33don't know I don't that period of time
43:36it just felt too long it's like yeah the
43:37FIA by then the position wasn't given
43:40back make your decision either no
43:42further action or uh or or a penalty I
43:45guess which would be a 5-second penalty
43:47which I think was a risk that ven was 10
43:50seconds now done that no no yeah well
43:53I'd prefer that I thought they pushed it
43:54upwards because people were getting away
43:56with it too much
43:57Isn't it nice though that Red Bull are
43:59actually suddenly slightly afraid of
44:01being penalized for something so that I
44:04don't think in the past they would have
44:05told Max to do that it feels because
44:07they no longer have the fastest yeah
44:10it's it's really weird though because
44:13like it shouldn't matter whether or not
44:15you're dominant I think it's that I
44:17think it's that the Hamilton era has
44:20ended for long enough that we're not in
44:22this mindset with the officials that
44:25kind of that that anyone but Lewis kind
44:26of thing so that preferential treatment
44:29might be starting to slip especially
44:31because Red Bull are no longer United as
44:33as a group so I mean this is it's nice
44:36to see because not because one team is
44:38being penalized unfairly but because one
44:41team is actually finally getting
44:42slightly fairer treatment I still don't
44:45think it's entirely um equal but at
44:48least they're worried about it at least
44:49they're concerned that if we do
44:50something blatantly not allowed that we
44:53probably need to consider that in our in
44:55our strategy
44:58I actually think that may have been you
44:59know the turn one thing he could see it
45:01was happening and then let's not forget
45:02in sort of recent history we've seen
45:03drivers like alono and others just
45:06nailing it in in ter when almost
45:08premeditated and being lorded for it as
45:09a massive IQ move so max instantly
45:12recognized the situation unfolding ahead
45:14of him flawed it and tried to argue it
45:16later I mean you can't really blame him
45:18for what he did it was a little bit
45:19annoying that yet it it kind of tripped
45:22Lewis up a little bit and and as anony
45:24Davidson fantastically pointed out after
45:26the race that kind of sa Lando race a
45:27little bit because he would have been
45:28stuck behind Lewis so you can't really
45:31blame Max for doing that and then AR do
45:33it and then argue later I think that I
45:35mean if Max would have backed off and
45:37done it immediately he probably would
45:38have been swallowed for the pack so I
45:39think most most drivers in that
45:42situation probably would have done the
45:43same as Max there so we haven't really
45:46spoken in detail about the
45:47technicalities of that turn one incident
45:49and I don't want to labor it which one
45:52though which one so ven driving off the
45:54track and and like gaining an advantage
45:56around the
45:57was that was that his fault I mean how
45:58could we possibly decide whose fault is
46:01it yay let's play the whose fault is it
46:04game so we've got two incidents here we
46:06have got turn one with Max vapen going
46:09up against the two McLaren piastri in
46:12the middle of the track kind of really
46:13hustling and pushing wide Norris as it
46:16was and then vapen being the spare the
46:18spare car on the left and then we've got
46:20the turn one incident later on in the
46:22race with Max V stappen and Lewis
46:24Hamilton colliding so Brad you wanted to
46:26talk about the first one yeah so so
46:29technically so we kind of all understand
46:32that with the modern racing rules and
46:34again I'm going to highlight that we're
46:35kind of introduced to allow Max for
46:37stappen to drive how he wants to this
46:39isn't how we traditionally would judge
46:40things but we've got this whole thing of
46:42if you're on the inside and you're ahead
46:45at the Apex then you're allowed to
46:47essentially give the outside driver no
46:49room at all but what that doesn't really
46:52take into account is multiple cars so so
46:54additional cars in this instance three
46:56cars one like we were at turn one so we
46:58have McLaren McLaren and then Red Bull
47:01and this particular incident it jumped
47:03out to me when it happened this
47:04particular incident really highlights
47:06the problem with saying you need to be
47:07ahead by the Apex because where was the
47:10Apex at turn one if you look at multiple
47:13angles of that exact incident then
47:16someone else is ahead at different parts
47:17of the corner vapman is slightly ahead
47:19if you look at the right angle at the
47:22right part of the corner and in that
47:24case you could probably argue that he
47:25was entitled to on the exit wasn't
47:28entitled to take the any line he wanted
47:30or or take the Apex but he was entitled
47:32to not be run all four wheels off the
47:34track on the exit yet there is no
47:36defined Apex so by having that as part
47:39of the wording of the rules it totally
47:41it makes the whole thing entirely
47:42subjective and so whoever is judging it
47:45at the time can choose their own Apex so
47:47I could quite easily say well vapen
47:48wasn't ahead at the Apex because for me
47:50the Apex was where piastri or I don't
47:52even remember which car was on the
47:53inside probably piastri at turn at the
47:55first corner um when there was a point
47:58in the corner where he got to the inside
48:00first he was at the Apex first V stappen
48:02is entitled to zero room on the exit so
48:05by running wide he then has to back off
48:07and Slot back in where he would have
48:08been but you could also argue that no
48:10vapen was we never got to an Apex
48:13because that was actually further around
48:15the corner and vapen was run wide before
48:18that was allowed to play out so the
48:20rules have an awful wording or the
48:22guidelines but this is like the driver
48:24guidelines but the on the face of it or
48:27even if we go with what they say you
48:28know with the exact wording it doesn't
48:30take into account additional cars
48:32further out so I actually don't really
48:34know technically how much room Max was
48:37entitled to because Norris certainly
48:40didn't take the Apex and so who was
48:42ahead at the defining point of the
48:46corner it's a really tricky one to to do
48:49but I actually think how it unfolded was
48:52the most sensible and logical way to do
48:54it and I think foren did the correct
48:56thing of just keeping a boot in we'll
48:57sort it out later it was just a
48:59situational thing and one thing that we
49:01kind of haven't mentioned in this and no
49:03nobody sort of thing that was a busy
49:05move by pastri up the inside of his
49:07teammate that was really on the edge if
49:09he snatched the break he's taken all
49:11three of them out of the race and I was
49:13like wow that was so that deserves
49:15massive Kudos from Oscar because that
49:16was really super super brave but with
49:19the rules things Common Sense has to
49:21Prevail sometimes and I think they
49:22called it just about right what would
49:24have been really fascinating here is if
49:27Lewis had have got
49:29past um Lewis would Lewis would have
49:31stayed ahead of Lando and then Max and
49:33then how would you call that does he
49:36have to give two cars back or just one I
49:38would was just the one car cuz that it
49:40was one coming back on hindered Hamilton
49:44and that's why he lost out to Norris in
49:46the first place so when he gave the
49:47place back to Norris I was going well
49:49yeah but what about Hamilton CU his his
49:51coming back on you know was able to then
49:54impede on Hamilton who was kind of clear
49:56yeah uh yeah that's again I think that's
49:59largely it's just that's an unfortunate
50:01just yeah consequence of the the
50:03situation it was rude I mean it would
50:05have been a great move from Lewis but
50:06you're going around the outside of Max
50:08for stman in turn three in Hungary you
50:10know what's going to happen and to be
50:11fair Lewis did pay that back later in
50:13the race and did run him out a bit wide
50:15so it kind of leveled itself out in the
50:17end okay we can argue that but okay what
50:19I would say is when you have a chicane
50:20in turn one and two if you go wide
50:23there's normally like a little bit of a
50:24penalty runoff so like they had a say
50:27tracks like SOI or at Barcelona left of
50:30the board yeah yeah you have to do that
50:32so maybe hungara ring is a good
50:34candidate for a little penalty weave if
50:36you do end up going off because he
50:38certainly seemed to end up ahead of
50:40where he left the track so why should he
50:42be able to impede Hamilton who stayed on
50:45the track and was ahead of him you know
50:46that that's all that's kind of right but
50:49also think about it from a kind of a
50:50safety point of view if he would have
50:52joined the track slower than the rest of
50:55the pack behind him it's better just to
50:56explore it and just merge in and then
50:57sort it all out later so I actually
50:59don't think that probably could have
51:00been sorted out in any better way a
51:02valid tactic for next year something to
51:04remember for everyone we SEO do this
51:06loads and people on Twitter say it's a
51:08thousand IQ move just Premed I don't
51:10think it was premeditated from Max I
51:12think he very early on recognized the
51:14situation and just flawed it and sorted
51:16out later Matt uh I agree with you um I
51:19think he knew he had to go off track to
51:22avoid uh contact with Norris and he
51:25decided to take advantage of the
51:27situation as much as he could get away
51:30with which is exactly what he did and I
51:32agree with spanners the only reason he
51:34had the momentum there is because he
51:37went very far off track to the point
51:39where he could he could
51:41accelerate uh more than Hamilton could
51:44he could carry more momentum through
51:45that turn because he was wider but to me
51:48the interesting thing here is is the
51:50thing that Brad brings
51:51up Norris
51:54technically was behind Max
51:57at what we would casually call the Apex
52:02and yet Norris didn't get any trouble
52:05for this I have a
52:06theory and this is my theory and I'll
52:09put it to you you tell me if you think
52:10it sounds plausible or not which is that
52:13they were actually looking at piastri
52:15and Norris piastri was clearly ahead of
52:19Norris Norris was reacting to piastri
52:23therefore Max also being behind piastri
52:25was not NE necessarily entitled to room
52:29from piastri through the mechanism of
52:32Norris that would be my argument if I
52:35had to make it Max is almost collateral
52:37damage from what's happening on the very
52:40inside of the corner because the whole
52:42point of of this rule or the guideline
52:44is that the driver on the inside isn't
52:47allowed to run the driver on the outside
52:49all the way off if they are far enough
52:52alongside them or ahead at the Apex but
52:55the driver on the inside has no idea
52:56what the driver on the out outside is
52:58doing and that's what Max was he was
53:00like a secondary issue and Norris is
53:03responding to the car on his right and
53:05the fact that there's a car on his left
53:06is that isn't what the stewards are
53:08necessarily taking into account but I
53:10think the real the Crux of this is Max
53:13regardless of how inconvenienced he is
53:15by that whole situation he shouldn't be
53:17allowed to then gain from it he
53:19shouldn't be allowed to to make up a
53:20couple of positions so I I would have
53:22done actually what he did in that
53:23situation kept my foot in and then seen
53:26what happened later the fact that they
53:28asked him to then yeah the fact that
53:29they asked him to allow the position
53:32back that I would have also expected
53:34that to happen in that situation okay so
53:36I'm not avoiding Matt's question of
53:39which is the faster car but before that
53:41we have the big whose fault is it of the
53:44day which is Max VPP and Diving down the
53:48inside of Lewis Hamilton there is
53:50contact as Lewis Hamilton attempts to
53:53take the corner how dare he and Max
53:55maapp locks up and there is contact that
53:58may color your opinion of what my
54:00opinion is uh but it seemed very very
54:04clear to me and I think I think I don't
54:05know if Kyle can offer any defense here
54:08but it seemed really really clear to me
54:09that this was a very very classic case
54:12of a optimistic dive bomb gone wrong and
54:15I am flabbergasted by the fia's wording
54:19that Lewis Hamilton could have done more
54:22to avoid it I I can't think of a clearer
54:24case of one
54:27driving into another driver and it being
54:29their
54:30fault semi agree uh I do
54:34absolutely completely throw out the
54:37fia's comments as absolute hob cobblers
54:39because that's just I can't believe
54:40they've said that why didn't they say
54:41the same thing in the Norris for staing
54:43incident in Austria it's exactly the
54:45same thing Norris could have done more
54:47to avoid the accident but they didn't
54:48say that so I don't know why that was a
54:50thing but Lewis turns in on his normal
54:53line but it does catch max out I think
54:55Max has absolutely it I did actually
54:57just say to my partner just before that
54:59happened that Max has lost his head I'm
55:01expecting a crazy dive bomb wo and it
55:03comes cuz Max just had a very angry
55:05radio message hadn't he and you can tell
55:06he was getting hot under the collar
55:08there but he it was true what Max said
55:11afterwards like Max did double down on
55:12it and said Lewis moved in the breaking
55:13Zone Lewis I don't really agree with
55:16that but Max was caught out I think Max
55:17expect expected Lewis to see him and
55:20open the corner and kind of jump out the
55:21way to get the undercut but Lewis today
55:24wasn't playing ball I think Max genely
55:26expected Lewis to make room for him and
55:28I think Max would have just stayed on
55:29the track just turned it and I think
55:31Lewis could have maybe undercut him I
55:33don't think Max was expecting Lewis to
55:35actually move to turn into the corner I
55:37think he was expecting Lewis to jump out
55:39of the way and of course Denny moved he
55:40had to react change lock his locked his
55:43tires and then obviously the crash it
55:44was for stam's fault but yeah he was
55:46caught out I think he genuinely thought
55:48Lewis was going to see it coming and
55:50jump out as way so this situation
55:53requires a little bit of of nuanced
55:55understanding of racing etiquette so I'm
55:57going to try and very briefly describe
56:00why I see this in the way I do so if you
56:02imagine rosberg Hamilton 20 whatever the
56:05heck it was back at Austria where
56:06rosberg ran Hamilton all the way out to
56:08the edge of turn three before eventually
56:11turning in that was a case of two
56:14drivers who were side by side and they
56:17were approaching a corner and the driver
56:19on the inside had The High Ground and
56:21was effectively dictating where the
56:23driver on the outside was allowed to
56:25turn in both drivers were entirely under
56:27control at All Phases of the corner
56:30there was no outbreaking there was no
56:31locking up the driver on the outside was
56:34watching the driver on the inside and
56:36waiting for effectively permission to
56:38take the corner what happened today was
56:41very very different situation although I
56:43can understand why people would try and
56:44judge it similarly so you had this time
56:46you had a driver ahead on the outside
56:49and by outside I just mean on the racing
56:51line because they were ahead and they
56:52had no reason not to be on the racing
56:53line you then had a driver coming from
56:55very far far back attempting an an
56:57outbreaking maneuver and that driver in
57:00order to make that outbreaking maneuver
57:01stick legally needed to get the car
57:04break under control and turn into the
57:06corner at a reasonable point and what
57:09actually happened was the driver came
57:11down the inside ven tried to outbreak
57:13Hamilton Hamilton began his ordinary
57:15Turin Point his ordinary Turin phase and
57:18then was presented with a car out of
57:20control appearing on his inside and as
57:23the sters mentioned Hamilton could have
57:25done more to avoid the incident he could
57:27have entirely compromised his Corner
57:29reacted to the car on the inside
57:32appearing in his mirrors and on his
57:34right hand side and opened up the
57:36steering when he'd already begun turning
57:38in but he wasn't obliged to do that in
57:41any way it wasn't his mistake he wasn't
57:43consenting to being run wide he was just
57:46ahead turning into the corner and at
57:48that point it's up to the driver who's
57:50attempting an overtake to make that
57:52overtake safely and and under control
57:55and appear on the side and stay on the
57:58inside and not run any deeper and what
58:00Max did wasn't just under steer it was a
58:02very obvious both front tires locked up
58:06under steer where Lewis would have had
58:08to totally change his trajectory in
58:10order to avoid any contact that's very
58:12very different to the consent that I
58:13mentioned in the first example where you
58:15had two drivers who knew what was going
58:17on in that situation and it was a kind
58:20of unfolding evolving race battle this
58:23was a move suddenly happens and ven
58:26expected Hamilton to just straighten the
58:29wheel at his convenience which he wasn't
58:31obliged to
58:33do yeah he wasn't obliged to do that but
58:37um is it interesting I think if this
58:39move would have happened last year or
58:41the year before Lewis they wouldn't have
58:44made contact I think Lewis would have
58:45seen it and really made allowance for it
58:47but I think Lewis now he's got that win
58:49Lewis is a bit more fighty than he was I
58:51think Lewis has rediscovered his elbows
58:54and he stuck them well and truly out and
58:56he's now doing this and Max generally
58:59didn't expect that I think he was
59:00expecting Lewis of uh 22 and 23 uh
59:04vintage well this is the thing right so
59:06not just Hamilton Norris as well right I
59:10think the whole grid now will fight the
59:12spping whereas last year and the year
59:14before they they wouldn't and so that's
59:15it Matt the sort of the Invincible shine
59:18has come off the Red Bull machine it is
59:20now worth fighting v stappen as Hamilton
59:23showed because he got the podium today
59:25by fighting very hard with ven
59:28throughout the
59:29race again not the fastest car and
59:32crucially the updates they brought made
59:35it better for this track but not in a
59:37way that made it possible for them to
59:39pass even a slower Mercedes because I
59:41will say I think I think veren clearly
59:43had Pace but he didn't have it in the
59:45right place to actually be able to
59:47overtake Lewis and this is part of it he
59:50shows up he immediately has a turn one
59:52thing go he gets bad strategy not once
59:54but twice and he said after the race it
59:56was not so much the first undercut going
59:58wrong because Red Bull traditionally has
01:00:00gone for the tire Delta because that's
01:00:02been an advantage to them but once they
01:00:04saw it wasn't working they doubled down
01:00:06on that and I think that really just
01:00:08sent him on tilt I'm not sure it was a
01:00:11terrible strategy I I think it's just
01:00:13that they expected more tire wear and if
01:00:16they had had if they had been more tire
01:00:18wear having that overcut if you like
01:00:20might have worked better well it's
01:00:22worked for them in the past Max's point
01:00:24was once it didn't work the first time
01:00:26why did we do it again but but
01:00:28regardless I think this all put him into
01:00:32the Red Mist it put him on tilt and what
01:00:35Hamilton did that was both genius but I
01:00:37think also kind of why this wound up
01:00:39being a racing incident was he having
01:00:42had to pass they both had to pass a
01:00:44lapped car he took the racing line and
01:00:47thought to himself Max has got a a nice
01:00:51rate of uh uh overs speed here I better
01:00:54limit his ability in this corner so he
01:00:57kind of turns in up the same place he
01:00:59does but he turns in in a way to really
01:01:02limit the amount of real estate Max has
01:01:04to work with Max I think just reacted
01:01:07late to that and locked up the brakes
01:01:09and went straight on and that's how it
01:01:11happened any last point from you Brad on
01:01:13this racing
01:01:14incident I just think the more we see
01:01:17Max having to fight in the pack and the
01:01:19more we have have to see him uh the more
01:01:22opportunity we have to see him actually
01:01:25you know racing within the rules which
01:01:27is what you know that's what you're
01:01:28supposed to do when you're battling
01:01:29other drivers in various different
01:01:31situations I think we're going to see
01:01:33this more and more and I like the fact
01:01:35that he's under pressure and this really
01:01:37adds to my point at the start that
01:01:39McLaren are being naive and thinking
01:01:41that Norris cannot come back in this
01:01:43championship fight if they genuinely do
01:01:45have the fastest car which I appreciate
01:01:47we're about to talk about then there's a
01:01:50real chance Norris could come back here
01:01:52because Max won't be finishing second
01:01:54it's not a case of Norris first um max
01:01:57second in every race and mathematically
01:01:59it's very difficult to achieve if Norris
01:02:01is first in most of the races and Max is
01:02:04fifth or fourth this is on so we're
01:02:06going to see more of this as the season
01:02:08goes
01:02:09on um it's interesting especially with
01:02:12all of the comments that were happening
01:02:14this is the first time we're seeing sort
01:02:15of GP really biting back but there looks
01:02:18there teeth to it there's a bit of
01:02:19niggles I think this is indicating all's
01:02:21not well behind the scenes at Red Bull
01:02:23you obviously got the V steens versus
01:02:25corner it's not a happy hamper anymore
01:02:28like you know it's bad there is
01:02:30definitely something lurking in there
01:02:31and I think this the relationships are
01:02:33really strained and I think it's
01:02:35starting to come through now Max you
01:02:37know I don't think we're seeing the full
01:02:39picture here I think I don't think Max
01:02:41has flown off the rails just straight
01:02:42away unproved because look the Red Bull
01:02:44have been amazing the last few years
01:02:45they've nailed just about everything it
01:02:46is unusual to see a ride at R um a
01:02:48driver decking them out as soon as soon
01:02:51as it goes I forgot what show was on
01:02:53then as soon as it goes um as soon as it
01:02:55goes bad
01:02:56I think there's like real teeth behind
01:02:57the scenes I think he's lost face or
01:02:59they've fallen out a few races ago and
01:03:01this is brewing like you there something
01:03:04bad Brewing behind the scenes I think so
01:03:05too yeah I mean um yeah John Pierro
01:03:09lambasi definitely took that tone of
01:03:11okay you're not bigger than the team
01:03:13which has been different to before Scott
01:03:14makes a great Point Matt should have had
01:03:16Lewis around the outside a couple of
01:03:18laps before and missed it so there was
01:03:20one fight where Hamilton even went wide
01:03:22into turn one and and um Thea I think
01:03:26this is only from doing it on the Sim
01:03:28but that turn to if you're going to
01:03:30overtake you want to be around the
01:03:32outside sort of Wall of Death whereas
01:03:34because he was squeezing Hamilton to the
01:03:35inside suddenly the track just Falls
01:03:37away to your left and there's nothing
01:03:39you can do and and you just go wider and
01:03:41wider is that is that fair Brad that's
01:03:43because that's what happened to uh bing
01:03:45it looked like spanners the marbles
01:03:47pushed in wide oh was it the marbles oh
01:03:49okay yeah they they not supposed to
01:03:51they're not supposed to do that he just
01:03:53exactly as you said he squee Hamilton
01:03:55too much much then ran a bit wider than
01:03:57he intended got on the marbles I I can't
01:04:00I can't hide that I was enjoying that
01:04:02particular I know so you're taking Glee
01:04:04from it right but I will say that the
01:04:06last race I gave V stappen and red bullt
01:04:08a 10 out of 10 but it just seems like
01:04:10this like he had the opportunity to make
01:04:12the Red Bull strategy work so the Red
01:04:14Bull strategy was we're going to go for
01:04:16the overcut yes Hamilton's going to get
01:04:17ahead of you but you've got a tire
01:04:19Advantage use it and there was an there
01:04:21was a chance for him to get past a
01:04:23Mercedes that was struggling more on the
01:04:26tires was slower and he didn't take that
01:04:29opportunity today he's done lots of good
01:04:30racing things but today he didn't
01:04:32execute the plan that Red Bull put in
01:04:34front of him I agree about Silverstone
01:04:37totally agree and I agree with that
01:04:39particular move I thought that was done
01:04:40and dusted and I think most of the
01:04:42drivers on the grid in that position
01:04:44would have got that move done it's quite
01:04:46a simple around the outside move all you
01:04:48need to do is not go so far wide that
01:04:50you're on the bit of the track that no
01:04:52one's used yet and is covered in Marbles
01:04:54and then obviously go fully off the
01:04:55track he just didn't race that race
01:04:58properly in that exact moment there that
01:05:01that exact incident theen didn't pull it
01:05:04off and I I just like him being under
01:05:07that kind of pressure because I've said
01:05:09it for ages but that's this I haven't
01:05:12yet been convinced of I've been very
01:05:13convinced of Max ver happen's speed I
01:05:15think he's great I haven't been
01:05:16convinced of his racecraft yet when
01:05:18under pressure and this is an example
01:05:21where I'm still
01:05:23unconvinced okay to try to
01:05:26say something maybe not so negative
01:05:29about Max you know like I genuinely
01:05:30thought I genuinely thought silverston
01:05:32was his best Drive of the year and he
01:05:34outperformed the car I still think
01:05:36agreed I still think we may have had a
01:05:39bit of that in this race he was running
01:05:41a different spec to perz it looked
01:05:43difficult to drive I still think he may
01:05:46have been outperforming the car he'd
01:05:48been complaining about it the whole race
01:05:49and remember in the first in he was like
01:05:51it's bad the TIR isn't working I'm
01:05:52struggling in the corners he was already
01:05:54complaining about his balance and him
01:05:55going wide in that move you know we just
01:05:58don't have a read on was this for
01:06:00staffen having a scruffy race I think he
01:06:02was trying to maximize and get
01:06:03everything out of that car cuz I don't
01:06:06think I still think he's probably making
01:06:08that car look a bit better than it is so
01:06:10he still could have been driving a
01:06:11blinding race we just didn't get to see
01:06:13it well that's the key question then who
01:06:16has got the fastest car so I'm taking my
01:06:19lead from a lot of the F1 fan base when
01:06:22I am going to make my case that the Red
01:06:25Bull was still clearly the fastest car
01:06:26because Max would have won easily had he
01:06:29not been pushed off at the start had he
01:06:31not have to give the place back had he
01:06:33not been undercut by Lewis Hamilton had
01:06:35he not been held up by Lewis then been
01:06:37undercut by Lewis and then by Charles as
01:06:39well and then had he not gone onto the
01:06:41hards instead of a magic Super Tire that
01:06:43would have you know promoted him up to
01:06:45the front and then had he not been cruy
01:06:47turned in on by Lewis Hamilton Max ven
01:06:50would definitely have won this race have
01:06:52I done it right Matt doesn't that prove
01:06:55that St and had the fastest car
01:06:57today uh no usually the lap times are
01:07:00what we look at for that but it was a
01:07:02very well- constructed argument and
01:07:04quite believable I'll give you
01:07:07that when I was looking at the lap times
01:07:09all through the stints to be fair early
01:07:12on it looked like it was a a straight
01:07:14three-way fight like there was really
01:07:16three cars in it then Hamilton's
01:07:18Mercedes struggled a little bit U on the
01:07:21hards towards the end but but I think
01:07:24that Red Bull looked plenty
01:07:27quick yeah the Red Bull was it had a lot
01:07:30of pace but it couldn't pass anything
01:07:33fundamentally you can have a fast car
01:07:35but if it's not fast in the right places
01:07:37you're not going to make any forward
01:07:39progress unlike Perez who in the older
01:07:41spec car did make a fair amount of
01:07:43progress here he couldn't make that
01:07:46progress they were quicker overall in
01:07:48terms of lap time which is why he had
01:07:50the good qualifying but it came back to
01:07:53um absolutely bite them in the race and
01:07:56I think it it contributed to the
01:07:58frustration that Max had throughout and
01:08:01to his eventual um Ignus coming together
01:08:04with
01:08:05Hamilton yeah so look I I think um what
01:08:08is very clear is that the McLaren and
01:08:10Red Bull look pretty good and that the
01:08:13Mercedes is catching them quicker and
01:08:15could probably be quicker on on its day
01:08:17at the right track in the right
01:08:19conditions but I think you run that race
01:08:21in three different sets of conditions I
01:08:24think you're going to have three cars
01:08:25that are faster overall and you could
01:08:28have a different day where they choose
01:08:29the right or wrong setups they go the
01:08:31right the wrong way you could swap the
01:08:33drivers round I think that the
01:08:35difference between those cars is now
01:08:37quite small that all those different
01:08:39factors now come into it more than this
01:08:41Baseline somewhat meaningless who has
01:08:44the best car
01:08:46question it might be meaningless but I I
01:08:49it's hard to argue with McLaren having a
01:08:51slate Advantage at this point I'll be
01:08:54interested to see what they do at spa
01:08:57with the Red Bull and what spec they run
01:08:59that I see is a track where maybe we do
01:09:02see Red Bull coming back and having an
01:09:04advantage over
01:09:06McLaren I think it's absolutely
01:09:08undeniable they finished like 13 14
01:09:11seconds ahead of the rest of the pack
01:09:13today even with them giving away another
01:09:15five seconds in their fuffeling like
01:09:18they they're definitely the fastest card
01:09:20the thing looked on Rails in qual it
01:09:22looked absolutely amazing this is what
01:09:24we were seeing at the B the last couple
01:09:26of years yeah I'm fully in like McLaren
01:09:27is the best car Camp okay that's no fine
01:09:30and I'm not necessarily saying that's
01:09:31not true however I don't like the 13
01:09:34seconds Gap being cuz that was 13
01:09:35seconds to the third best car today so
01:09:38we can probably agree that Mercedes had
01:09:40the third best car uh so because ven had
01:09:43a nightmare on Pace ven was much faster
01:09:47than Hamilton no surely we're agreeing
01:09:49that so had he you know had he well I'll
01:09:52come you you're tell you're really
01:09:53trying to argue Matt that the Red Bull
01:09:56wasn't faster than the Mercedes yes it
01:09:58was be stop it not when the track
01:10:00temperature was around 4C it absolutely
01:10:02was not it was only when the
01:10:04temperatures went back up that we saw
01:10:06that pace difference uh show up with the
01:10:08Red
01:10:11Bull well no one's going to argue with
01:10:13that no I I was expecting somebody else
01:10:15to jump in because you're kind of
01:10:17backing up what I said which is that you
01:10:19run that race in three different sets of
01:10:21conditions and you get three different
01:10:23cars that are faster so to just like in
01:10:25Silverstone where I thought Red Bull
01:10:28didn't have the fastest car I actually I
01:10:29think the the Mercedes had the fastest
01:10:32package that day whereas here yeah maybe
01:10:35McLaren did have the fastest car today
01:10:37and that's fine but I just don't think
01:10:38that 13 second Gap is you know is the
01:10:42indicator because if you had taken away
01:10:45Hamilton from that equation Hamilton
01:10:47absolutely wrecked for Steen race like
01:10:50in so many ways with the undercut track
01:10:52position defending well all that kind of
01:10:54stuff so that was not an indicator of
01:10:56the sten's pace it was actually an
01:10:57indicator of of how well uh or not well
01:11:01that the stappen did all right quick
01:11:02fire before we go to the podium then
01:11:04because we've got a believe it or not
01:11:06there was more than McLaren and Red Bull
01:11:09in this race although of course they did
01:11:11dominate it with the headlines uh and I
01:11:13will say I just just want a quick note
01:11:15for anyone who thinks that we didn't
01:11:17praise piastri enough for that win I I
01:11:20think we did if you Stitch it together
01:11:22we just didn't do a whole how good is
01:11:24piastri bit because you know he he got
01:11:26you know he fought well off the start
01:11:28his time management was was decent he
01:11:30had track position that's great not
01:11:33every driver on the grid could have done
01:11:35what he did today and I believe had he
01:11:37not been undercut by Lando Norris he
01:11:39would have been able to hold position
01:11:40even with a charging Lando Norris um but
01:11:43we'll certainly get into that after the
01:11:44podium um so what what do we think um
01:11:47grabbed our attention I think qualifying
01:11:49was really interesting Matt um and you
01:11:51wanted to talk a little bit about
01:11:52sonoda's performance uh yeah I did
01:11:55because I remember before the the race
01:11:57we were talking about the strategy and
01:11:59someone said one stop and I said
01:12:00absolutely not no one did a one stop and
01:12:03guess who did a one stop this year Yuki
01:12:06absolutely so and therefore should be a
01:12:09shoe in
01:12:10for driver of the day no the for the
01:12:15something something
01:12:16seat for the uh for the senior Red Bull
01:12:19seat yes of course no and and this is
01:12:22this is a fascinating thing to me he he
01:12:24did One Stop he ran 40 laps essentially
01:12:27on the hard Tire his lap times were just
01:12:31ruthless he set his fastest lap like lap
01:12:34in the in the late 50s on tires that
01:12:37were you know a 20 laps old easily
01:12:41already and compared to Ricardo's Pace
01:12:44on the hard tires just like it was
01:12:47laughable and because it's a 20 second
01:12:49time savings I thought to myself well
01:12:51geez if Perez had been able to run a on
01:12:53stop although he did start a a hard Tire
01:12:55if he'd run a one stop and was 20
01:12:58seconds up the road where would he
01:12:59finish he would have finished in fourth
01:13:02place Perez would have if he'd been able
01:13:04to do a one stop and why Red Bull are
01:13:07overlooking performances like this well
01:13:10you know I'm just asking questions but
01:13:12I'd like to know the answer well the
01:13:13answer is the answer is that Perez sells
01:13:17a lot of caps and hats and shirts and
01:13:20Ricardo will sell a lot of hats and caps
01:13:22and shirts and sonoda not so many
01:13:26I think Yuki deserves some rightful
01:13:28praise there he had quite a big Smash in
01:13:31qualifying and when he got out he did
01:13:33look somewhat discombobulated and it was
01:13:35a bit thing it was a bit peeve that what
01:13:37happened he he couldn't really figure
01:13:39out what had happened to him there he
01:13:40got launched by a difference in height
01:13:43from the back of the curb to the ASD
01:13:45Turf it was all a bit strange and
01:13:46launched him so the car would have been
01:13:47smashed up he didn't have a great qu
01:13:49quality spot but yeah to make that one
01:13:51stop work as Matt said that's incredible
01:13:54to get ninth I think he was ninth in the
01:13:56end ninth he's yes yeah that's that's a
01:13:58really really really good performance
01:14:00he's outperformed Ricardo again so you
01:14:03know Yuki is doing everything he needs
01:14:05to do like like what else can he do
01:14:08really apart from he needs a crazy good
01:14:11safety car called to go his way in like
01:14:13the next race so he can fluke a Podium
01:14:15or something like that CU he is actually
01:14:17doing a solid job I was quite critical
01:14:19of Ruki the first couple years think
01:14:22only Honda was keeping him in like Honda
01:14:24like a Japanese dri whether there a an
01:14:26affiliation or not I believe he he is
01:14:29only there because of Honda but I
01:14:30believe now he's purely he's he he is
01:14:32there purely on Merit now he's he's
01:14:35doing a really solid job so I wouldn't
01:14:37be unhappy at all if he got the Red Bull
01:14:39drive so what are you saying that it's
01:14:41not a good idea to dig a trench in the
01:14:43concrete and then fill it with something
01:14:44softer than
01:14:46concrete
01:14:48no that was my concern in austr I know
01:14:51you argued with me Brad um because you
01:14:53know it's not a proper gravel trap that
01:14:55they had nosta but my main concern is
01:14:57before you put in the soft thing you
01:14:59basically have a basin that you've
01:15:01carved out and that car would well my my
01:15:05my fear was in Austria they'd go
01:15:06sideways and roll once they hit the side
01:15:08curve but this is kind of the same where
01:15:10they this is like a big sausage curb but
01:15:13a horizontal one or perpendicular to the
01:15:15direction of travel and you know they've
01:15:18obviously gone down on the AstroTurf and
01:15:19then hit it like a ramp and then flown
01:15:21into the the barrier this kind of you
01:15:24know thing it can't be it can't be the
01:15:26thing going forward yeah I didn't I
01:15:28didn't think the solution they came up
01:15:30with in the end was particularly good um
01:15:32I thought the Austria solution was good
01:15:34except for the bit that piastro W wide
01:15:36at you know I think it would just be a
01:15:38neater solution if you couldn't
01:15:40physically touch the gravel um and still
01:15:42be within track limits that would just
01:15:44make it easier for everyone the drivers
01:15:46and and the stewards to police if
01:15:48outside track limits you know if you
01:15:50touched the gravel you were definitely
01:15:51outside track limits but what they did
01:15:53here at Hungary was it didn't seem any
01:15:56better than just having grass there
01:15:58because you could just you can dig away
01:15:59at the gravel and make that worse so
01:16:02anyway in terms of the the sonoda
01:16:05evaluation I didn't see him at all in
01:16:08the race so I I didn't really have any
01:16:10kind of opinion until you guys started
01:16:11talking about him I didn't even realize
01:16:13he finished in front of Ricardo I don't
01:16:15think he'll get the nod ahead of Ricardo
01:16:18because I think putting Daniel in for
01:16:20just under half the season is quite a
01:16:22neat way of finishing the Ricardo story
01:16:25if he does well for some weird reason
01:16:29that's kind of brilliant for Red Bull
01:16:30and they'll look great and they'll have
01:16:32all the Ricardo merch sold and that's a
01:16:34you know that would be a good news Red
01:16:36Bull story if in the more likely
01:16:38scenario he doesn't do a lot better than
01:16:41Perez and he Fizzles out well at least
01:16:43they've kind of given him the shot he's
01:16:44had a couple of years at the junior team
01:16:46and he's not that good in Red Bull so
01:16:47they can get rid of him without that
01:16:49much argument and that then like frees
01:16:51up a space for the next drivers to to
01:16:53come on up and LW and to get see I just
01:16:55don't really see Coda as a Red Bull
01:16:57driver I see him as a Honda driver all
01:16:59right fine so okay I'm uh I need a break
01:17:02before we go to the awards um so it's
01:17:04time to talk about Perez so I'll put um
01:17:06our three nons spanners people up on the
01:17:08screen and uh leave you to it take it
01:17:11away
01:17:12Matt all right then well I suppose if
01:17:14we're going to talk about Perez we
01:17:16should probably start with his
01:17:18qualifying which sort of set the scene
01:17:20for the entire race no skip that bit oh
01:17:24no we only talk about qualifying crash
01:17:26is when it confirms your theor who
01:17:28crashes there no one that's who you did
01:17:32say that how did he wind up crashing
01:17:34there
01:17:35Brad uh I mean I wasn't watching it live
01:17:38because I don't know if I mentioned I
01:17:40was at Formula E live um I tried to keep
01:17:43up with it a little bit on phones there
01:17:44were a few people there watching it on
01:17:46their phones but I saw the replay and it
01:17:48looked like he it was it was slightly
01:17:50damp wasn't it it was like raining a
01:17:52little bit everyone was on slicks and he
01:17:54forgot the the painted bits of the
01:17:56slippery bits so he just forgot all the
01:17:59stuff that you learn in every other
01:18:00category and in Formula 1 and they put
01:18:03his tires on the slippery bit and he
01:18:06surprisingly then spun into the barrier
01:18:09um and somehow everyone else didn't do
01:18:13that yeah well and and this to me seems
01:18:16like a bit of a shame because he was in
01:18:18the older spack of car which oh that
01:18:21that's what it was it was the old it
01:18:23wasn't the other thing I said it was the
01:18:24old the spec probably oh is that it
01:18:27Kyle yeah I was just about to say when
01:18:29it happened some well some of you may
01:18:31have seen my tweet the thing that kind
01:18:33of gets my back up a bit about Perez is
01:18:35the just the zero I don't think I've he
01:18:37I don't think I've ever heard him say I
01:18:40made a mistake uh it was my fault I've
01:18:42done this it was always the car wasn't
01:18:44good enough or the team it's the
01:18:45absolute lack of accountability for
01:18:47having a bad performance I mean how
01:18:49often have we heard Lewis Lando lir all
01:18:53put their hands up and go I was just a
01:18:56bit I was just a bit crap today like I
01:18:57made a mistake and sorry to the team
01:18:59like even George George at the end of
01:19:01qualifying even of the team made a
01:19:02mistake with not putting enough fuel in
01:19:04he was like it's on me that was my
01:19:05mistake cuz I wasn't quick enough in the
01:19:07first bit of it and the one thing that
01:19:09really gets my back up and makes me
01:19:11think that Perez is quite an unlikable
01:19:13driver in my opinion is the lack of just
01:19:16accountability of saying I've I may have
01:19:19had a a rude gesture from span I'm not
01:19:21here I want to break it's the uh it's
01:19:24it's the the lack of accountability I
01:19:25would like him a hell of a lot more if
01:19:27he come out and goes I just did a really
01:19:29bad performance today I need to get it
01:19:31back together sorry for the team I put
01:19:32it in the wall again not just oh the car
01:19:35was difficult to drive and it was
01:19:36slippery and it wented the barrier if I
01:19:38was one of the mechanics i' I'd love to
01:19:39see he say I'm really sorry for my guys
01:19:42I'm doing this yeah let's try and sort
01:19:44it out positive and move forward but he
01:19:45doesn't I'd like him a load more If he
01:19:47if he just held his hands up and said
01:19:49I'm I'm going for a rough patch but he
01:19:51doesn't well maybe this will um assuage
01:19:55your fears there or your your complaints
01:19:58and and that I do believe he did admit
01:20:01that like no this is this is It's it
01:20:04can't continue like this like even he is
01:20:06saying like no I can't continue to have
01:20:08results like this I don't know if you if
01:20:11that really counts as accepting
01:20:13responsibility or not but it seemed like
01:20:16to me it was at least an acknowledgement
01:20:19of his performance not being up to par
01:20:22which which is fair that said Warner
01:20:25seemed to be pretty happy with what he
01:20:26did
01:20:30today I'm not just I want it to be over
01:20:34I want it to be over Kyle I just and I
01:20:37don't I don't like there's William seat
01:20:39I think and I think it's going to be
01:20:40midseason and I think Perez is about to
01:20:43ruin the the time of a lot of Midfield
01:20:45drivers the likes of Magnuson the likes
01:20:48of Joe who were going around with a
01:20:49little bit of money trying to get that
01:20:51that mid lower Midfield Drive uh I think
01:20:53Perez is about to ruined one of their
01:20:55days hang on hang on I just looked do
01:20:57you know how many places Perez gained
01:21:00today what from the the second the
01:21:03terrible place that he started yes he
01:21:05gained nine places he did exactly as
01:21:08well as George Russell did and I don't
01:21:10hear anyone saying George Russell should
01:21:13be fired for today's
01:21:15performance
01:21:17YZ yep to be fair to Perez and Russell
01:21:20even said this in his interview
01:21:21afterwards and it was quite funny it was
01:21:23quite like a backhanded compliment
01:21:25really he said and he goes actually we
01:21:27weren't expecting Perez to have the
01:21:28performance he did today we expected his
01:21:30previous performances and it was just
01:21:32they generally expected him to drop the
01:21:34ball but the ball was well and firmly
01:21:36held by Paris today so credit where
01:21:37credit's due he did a solid job right
01:21:41why is it me that's the one sitting here
01:21:42going I don't agree I don't agree I
01:21:45think the bar is too low you're too
01:21:46close to you're too close to the subject
01:21:48you got too close to the subject I'm
01:21:50lost I can't see the woods for the trees
01:21:52but I think that is not the performance
01:21:54that saved job they are simply biing
01:21:56their time until the contract Clauses
01:21:59open up so let's move on to the
01:22:02podium and I think there something we
01:22:04can all agree on at least was that today
01:22:06was really entertaining I honestly think
01:22:09Formula 1 is in such great shape Osa
01:22:12Oscar piastri is the seventh winner this
01:22:16season if my maths is correct is that
01:22:18right he's the seventh winner and you
01:22:21have to go back to 2012 to have that
01:22:23where you had the first seven races had
01:22:25seven different winners obviously this
01:22:27is different because vampin has
01:22:29dominated the start of the season I
01:22:31think the point that Brad makes is is
01:22:33fair which is this Championship isn't
01:22:35over and had Lando Norris won today and
01:22:38not come second that gap of 69 for
01:22:41whatever reason seems nice like a nicer
01:22:44Gap than 66 uh than 76 that would have
01:22:48made a huge huge difference today engine
01:22:50penalties are coming and they don't seem
01:22:52to have a car Advantage not only that
01:22:55but ven has not raced well under
01:22:57pressure and looks to have kind of lost
01:23:00the pit wall a little bit and you've got
01:23:02internal things going on with Red Bull
01:23:05that could rip the whole team apart we
01:23:08could genuinely legitimately be looking
01:23:11at the the end of Red Bull not only as a
01:23:13force within Formula 1 but maybe as an
01:23:15entity in itself and all of that could
01:23:18happen Brad stop praying stop
01:23:20manifesting it but all of that could
01:23:23happen this season
01:23:24we have seen big leads like this
01:23:27overturned and in fact I just mentioned
01:23:302012 where I think the history books
01:23:33sometimes don't reflect how big a lead
01:23:36Fernando Alonzo had going into the
01:23:38summer break I think he had a 50o lead
01:23:41Fernando Alonzo going into the summer
01:23:42break in 2012 these kind of deficits do
01:23:46get closed down especially when there's
01:23:49momentum for that to happen Lando Norris
01:23:52and McLaren would have to be the best or
01:23:55the second best team Race in race out
01:23:57and it's not impossible that that could
01:24:00happen now so Formula 1 is not only in
01:24:02great shape because of that but because
01:24:05and I'm going to credit drive to survive
01:24:07for for all the old school puts it down
01:24:10and says it cheapens some of Formula 1
01:24:13the reason we care about the radio drama
01:24:16today more than the actual strategy and
01:24:19what happened was is because we're so
01:24:20deeply invested in the characters we're
01:24:22so deeply invested in those people and
01:24:25that's something that wouldn't have
01:24:26happened in the Bernie era when I was
01:24:29growing up in Formula 1 you never had
01:24:30access to all of these drivers and as
01:24:33much as I tease my American colleagues
01:24:36for calling these story lines instead of
01:24:38you know news stories or what happened
01:24:40they are storylines and if we enjoy that
01:24:43and if it's something that really
01:24:44absorbs us into the season and how it
01:24:46unfolds then you know so be it we've got
01:24:49some new storylines now the drama
01:24:52between Max and the team the interaction
01:24:55between Lando Norris and piastri did
01:24:57they did they rob piastri of the glory
01:25:00of his first race did Lando Norris get
01:25:03robbed of his chance at the championship
01:25:05all of that is just absolutely fantastic
01:25:08Dynamics even the internal workings of
01:25:11the power structure at McLaren is now in
01:25:14the Limelight and the focus this is just
01:25:17good TV so we're going to give out two
01:25:20Awards we're going to start with a
01:25:22negative one so we can finish uh on a
01:25:25positive so we're going to start on the
01:25:27negative by asking who you think missed
01:25:29the Apex oh no you missed the Apex okay

01:26:52opening up all of the controversy today
01:26:54that would have been easily avoided it
01:26:56was totally predictable it could have
01:26:58been completely avoided by simply
01:27:00pitting piastri before Norris if Norris
01:27:03had then been faster in the final stint
01:27:05and had closed pastri down and had made
01:27:07a legitimate overtake because his tire
01:27:09his tire um management was better than
01:27:11piastri there would have been no
01:27:13complaints today everything would have
01:27:14been fine and if piastri had just won it
01:27:17would have been fine but McLaren opened
01:27:19up all of these negatives by pitting nor
01:27:24for no real good reason before piastri
01:27:28if they'd have left left pestry out for
01:27:30longer to build some kind of Delta I
01:27:32could have understand the meaning but
01:27:34because they did him exactly one lap
01:27:36later or two laps later sorry I think
01:27:37Matt said they guaranteed an undercut
01:27:39from Norr and then caused themselves
01:27:42this entire issue no McLaren get Brad
01:27:44Smith Apex award Kyle power Kyle host of

01:28:13British Grand Prix at silverston right

01:28:17is that I think it's on the fourth of
01:28:20August I need to I just need to check I
01:28:22haven't got it off the top it is it's in
01:28:23two weeks time oh that is possible Brad
01:28:26should we go and see the Witchcraft and
01:28:27see what stops them falling down
01:28:30absolutely not they're not even real
01:28:31cars no I agree I agree unless they
01:28:33strap two of them together that is a
01:28:35hard maybe but this would be a good
01:28:37opportunity for Kyle to convince us to
01:28:39at least watch it on TV because it is
01:28:42absolutely amazing there is so many
01:28:44story like the Formula 1 at the moment
01:28:46there are some big characters there's
01:28:48some controversial decisions there's
01:28:50inter Team battles and it's all Brewing
01:28:53up to
01:28:54an absolutely superb end of season
01:28:57there's so many story lines and I've
01:28:59never thought of MOT for story lines and
01:29:02I've been DTS what's happened to me so
01:29:04it's amazing uh so yeah I there has
01:29:07never been a better time to watch Moto
01:29:09GP it has all of the drama so if you
01:29:12want a little bit more short form racing
01:29:14and you don't have a full commitment
01:29:16over the weekend watch MotoG GP and then
01:29:18come and listen to us talk about
01:29:20it and it is super cheap compared to
01:29:23Formula 1 just want to throw that in
01:29:25there you love a good bargain you can't
01:29:26go wrong there for Formula E for me and
01:29:29my son was £75 to get into the London XL
01:29:32and that was just such a wow after you
01:29:35know after trying to go to Formula 1 uh
01:29:38but Kyle who missed the Apex for you

01:30:00saying that Lewis could have avoided the
01:30:03accident more is absolute cods Wallop
01:30:05like I I I don't know where that has
01:30:07come from it is absolutely ridiculous
01:30:10why didn't they say the same about
01:30:11austri like as stewards I think that's
01:30:13quite dangerous language to kind of use
01:30:15and said they could avoid it but it's
01:30:16absolutely true just I don't expect to
01:30:18see that coming in a Steward's decision
01:30:20it's unusually my opinion so that's my
01:30:22answer Matt do rpets at mat

01:31:40put together when talking to Norris

01:31:48drive past Alonzo and you go see if you
01:31:50can catch sunod but just give the
01:31:52position back
01:31:54if you don't they said
01:31:57that and then the position never got
01:31:59returned so stroll gets a point Alonzo
01:32:02doesn't and I still have no idea why
01:32:07that position did not get returned yep
01:32:09there we go so now it's on to to me and
01:32:12all I would push and promote is to
01:32:13follow me at spanners ready and if
01:32:15you've gotten this far into our program

01:32:50think if Max has a great day after doing
01:32:52that we should celebrate doing that that
01:32:54but if Max does that and then takes
01:32:56himself out of the race blaton U misses
01:33:00opportunities to pass Lewis Hamilton and
01:33:03then kicks off and sounds pretty bad all
01:33:05day on the radio I and let's be honest
01:33:08he sounded grumpy and over tired on the
01:33:10radio he did the one thing I would like
01:33:13to point out and take exception to was
01:33:14cofy used that line a bit too much
01:33:17already when he's under criticized for
01:33:19being for the British biased on a
01:33:21British broadcast which I think is
01:33:22ridiculous by the way listen to any
01:33:23other local both sort of you know the
01:33:25local things listen to VI play or zigo
01:33:28or whatever it is or dazen whatever it
01:33:29is that's ridiculous these accusations
01:33:31but already when they they know there's
01:33:33like ears on them and negative ears on
01:33:36them why keep going down and I don't
01:33:37like him exploiting that I think Max
01:33:39doing the Sim racing stuff should be
01:33:40absolutely celebrated and I think it's
01:33:42amazing cuz he's doing the hobby that we
01:33:43love as well in the form one weekend and
01:33:45I think it's the coolest thing ever yeah
01:33:47it's cool that he does eye racing it's
01:33:48so cool like you've been in races with
01:33:51the stappen Brad I've been in races with
01:33:53GR Alonzo a Jake Dennis all these great
01:33:56races do I racing I think it's brilliant
01:33:583:00 a.m. on a school night you're mad
01:34:01you're mad makes it even cooler no that
01:34:03has a a that's Into Night Shift
01:34:05territory that has a specific negative
01:34:07cognitive effect I think if you've got a
01:34:10rocket ship that's clearly the class of
01:34:13the field and you can win easily and
01:34:14your teammates an absolute bum then yeah
01:34:16you can do whatever you want really it
01:34:17doesn't really matter and you can look
01:34:19like a hero by doing it but when you
01:34:21need the full focus of your team and
01:34:23everyone in that team is going to bed at
01:34:25a sensible time because they need to be
01:34:27on the ball for the race day to make
01:34:29good decisions and you are staying up
01:34:31having a bit of a jolly in the middle of
01:34:32the night to play on you know it's
01:34:35simulator but he's not doing it for F1
01:34:38simulation purposes he's doing it to
01:34:39have fun in his in his in the red line
01:34:42team then if you have a bad day the next
01:34:44day you have to hold your hand up and
01:34:46say maybe I was a bit too tired yep no
01:34:48that's that that's complet like yeah I
01:34:50love iRacing and I think it's fantastic
01:34:53but if I'm compromising my work because
01:34:55I'm up until 4:00 a.m. that is a factor
01:34:57I'm not telling anyone how to live but
01:34:58like you know if you win you're a hero
01:35:01do ever do whatever you want um but that
01:35:03is my M Apex award so now we get to end
01:35:05on the good

01:35:10thing and I'm going to go first because
01:35:14I jumped the gun early on with the
01:35:17piastri train and I really thought that
01:35:20he was going to be putting it to Lando
01:35:22Norris much much quicker
01:35:24and more
01:35:25consistently but today you know it
01:35:27looked like the things we've criticized
01:35:29him for he has addressed so it wasn't
01:35:32the hardest Tire management uh race on
01:35:35Earth yes it was high tire wear but the
01:35:40way the stints worked out and the
01:35:41strategies worked out it wasn't like you
01:35:43were hang having to hang on for dear
01:35:44life it wasn't extreme Tire management
01:35:47but you needed some and he did it some
01:35:50and especially on a hard to overtake
01:35:53track he did it enough so on this day in
01:35:56these conditions he did enough to win a
01:35:59Grand Prix and drove well enough too and
01:36:01I'm delighted to see that potential
01:36:04fulfilled and just think he could be at
01:36:06Alpine what kind of day would he have
01:36:08been having today if he had not made the
01:36:11Bold decision along with his management
01:36:13with Mark Weber to say no we need to not
01:36:15be there we need to be with McLaren so
01:36:18that is the ultimate thing isn't it for
01:36:20a new driver to come in to F1 and win a
01:36:22Grand Prix my thing is the weekend Oscar

01:36:30the weekend was actually and I hope I'm

01:36:40200 podiums nice like that just just to
01:36:43put that into some context right let's
01:36:45just average out the races let's say
01:36:47it's 20 races per season that's 10
01:36:50seasons of podiums like solid that's 10
01:36:53multiple seasons of podiums that's
01:36:56insane like if a form One driver has had
01:36:5810 seasons in the sport you'd consider
01:37:00that a bit of a journeyman and they've
01:37:01had a great career 10 SE of purely
01:37:05podiums is absolutely insane I've never
01:37:08been one really for lording Hamilton for
01:37:10his like statistics even though they're
01:37:12amazing um that just blew my mind when I
01:37:15actually said that earlier I hadn't
01:37:16actually been keeping a track on it and
01:37:18I didn't realize when they said that
01:37:19earlier I I was like no surely that
01:37:21can't that can't be right and to do that
01:37:23today to do that today he had to fight
01:37:25off none other than the current three
01:37:27time world champion who you know had to
01:37:30fight off Max with sta one of the
01:37:31fiercest Racers on the planet and was
01:37:33able to defend with you know a slower
01:37:36car at that point uh yeah and I've
01:37:38actually been quite outspoken of Lewis
01:37:39like of course I'm a Lewis fan but as
01:37:41always on this podcast I will say it as
01:37:42I see it and I have spent the last few
01:37:44podcasts apart from zil obviously pretty
01:37:47much decking Lewis out and saying I
01:37:48don't think he's been doing a good
01:37:49performance and I've said on our group
01:37:50chats before that I think he's I think
01:37:52he's on the turn I think he's over and
01:37:53he was declining so to see him come back
01:37:55strong like this I love to be able to
01:37:57praise it and to see it so there might
01:37:59be life in that old dog yet I think I
01:38:01think I was wrong I don't think it's
01:38:03even an insult to say he's not at his
01:38:05Peak you know at nearly 40s 40 in
01:38:08January I don't think it's an insult to
01:38:10say this might not be the ultimate best
01:38:13Peak Physical version of mental
01:38:15sharpness leis Hamilton that that's you
01:38:18know now you're having to box clever and
01:38:20uh it's great we've seen him boxing
01:38:22clever for a couple of grown in a row

01:38:25weekend I like the confirmation for the
01:38:28third race in a row that we have a a
01:38:30fight on our hands for each race I like
01:38:34going into the weekend not being certain
01:38:36of the outcome whatever that happens to
01:38:38be whether it's Max or someone else who
01:38:40wins I like the fact that it's not a
01:38:42foregone conclusion so my thing of the
01:38:44weekend is
01:38:46that and that leaves us with Matt Matt
01:38:48what was your thing of the
01:38:50weekend well you know my thing of the
01:38:52weekend has to be the uh little chitter
01:38:55chatter between Hamilton and Norris in
01:38:57the cool down room oh my goodness right
01:39:00and first have you seen that video that
01:39:01I shared in our group chat no oh it's
01:39:05hard to get this across in words but
01:39:08Norris comes in and Hamilton like sticks
01:39:11his bottom lip out like in a a face to
01:39:14to Norris for not winning the race and
01:39:17you've got I've I'm I've shared it in
01:39:18the Discord I think I'm going to Tweet
01:39:20it as well do you know what I'm going to
01:39:21do the easiest thing is to retweet it uh
01:39:24but it just it was quite patronizing
01:39:26actually but it was patronizing but also
01:39:29part like genuine sympathy it was very
01:39:32Uncle e it was like what your uncle
01:39:34would do if you fell over with 10 m to
01:39:37go in 100
01:39:38meters yeah well I I just love it
01:39:40because he came in and he's like oh wow
01:39:43man you guys have a really fast car and
01:39:45and I just love that Lando for I don't
01:39:47know psychologically the place he was in
01:39:50or how he feels about lewi generally was
01:39:52immediately well you guys had a really
01:39:53fast car s years ago and is so perplexed
01:39:56by this he's like what were you here s
01:39:58years ago like what is this then he goes
01:40:02on and says look you know I was actually
01:40:04trying to pay you guys a compliment you
01:40:06build a really good car here yeah and
01:40:08and Lando just took it entirely the
01:40:10wrong way so I just think I think it
01:40:12augers for more fun in our racing in the
01:40:14future that's all that might not have
01:40:16been the best time to approach Lando
01:40:19Norris as well and and unfortunately for
01:40:21Lando you know that was uh similar to
01:40:23Monza a couple of Seasons back where
01:40:25suddenly McLaren find themselves in a
01:40:27onew and he's not the McLaren that gets
01:40:30to be upfront but that's the end of our
