00:19are longer than mine by the 1040.
00:22otherwise it's the 840 so this is a

00:32this the risery effort so here's a few
00:34more words in your ear holes The Edge
00:371040 and 840 are both top end bike
00:40computers in fact they're the tippiest
00:42of the topiest the 1040 launched in June
00:462022 is garmin's Flagship by computer it
00:50was the first to feature Garmin
00:52significantly improved user interface
00:54and includes all the sophisticated
00:57training safety and navigation features
01:00known to veloman it was also the first
01:03cycling GPS to feature solar charging if
01:07you're prepared to pay a soup some more
01:09for that option The Edge 840 launched in
01:12April 2023 is basically all of that just
01:15smaller it shares the same software
01:17features as the 1040 along with the
01:20updated and improved UI solar glass is
01:23an option and like the 1040 it's blessed
01:26with a holy USBC charging aperture but
01:29wait before you think the 840 brought
01:32nothing to the relationship we should
01:34talk about climb Pro Climb Pro on the
01:37edge 1040 and 840 clone Pro is the
01:40dedicated screen that pops up on edge
01:42devices when you're climbing in previous
01:45versions of the feature after you had
01:47uploaded a route to your device The Edge
01:49would identify any climbs and present
01:52interesting stats about each one
01:55gradient length meters ascended time in
01:58the Death Zone The Edge 10 40 and 840
02:01still have all the existing climb Pro
02:04Fandango but now you don't need to be
02:06following a route to see it as you free
02:08ride around both computers will identify
02:11climbs in real time and show the climb
02:13Pro screen whenever you're on one this
02:16enhanced climb Pro feature which excites
02:18my innards in a manner that should
02:20disturb you came pre-baked into the edge
02:23840 at launch with a beta firmware
02:26release up chiseling the 1040 at more or
02:30less the same time so sure ultimately
02:32there's no difference between the two
02:34devices on the client Pro front but the
02:37Kom goes to the 840 for getting it first
02:41or something but you came here for a
02:43comparison and a comparison involves
02:46differences so here are those
02:48differences the 1040 is bigger and
02:51heavier than the 840. there are
02:54minuscule differences in with the 1040
02:58is like 1.5 mm meters wider and depth I
03:02don't know a micro lengthwise we're
03:04talking just over three centimeters in
03:07Imperial just over a chode for me
03:10there's no downside in the 1040 being
03:12bigger it's sleek and svelt if those
03:15things are different compared to other
03:17touchscreen electronic devices let's
03:19call them smartphones it's downright
03:22mini and I will not accept not even from
03:25you Cartwright that the 1040s extra 40
03:28grams of weight makes any difference to
03:30anyone's riding performance ever get
03:33down to five percent body fat and then
03:35we can talk the 1040 has space for a
03:38bigger display the 1040 has a three and
03:41a half inch display corner to corner
03:44whilst the 840 measures 2.6 inches
03:47neither display is particularly high def
03:50the Hammerhead Crew 2 Steve crams more
03:53pixels into its high res 3.2 inch screen
03:56anyway the 1040 and 840 are equivalent
04:00in terms of resolution the 1040 just has
04:03more screen real estate by my
04:06calculations 67 more whether you need
04:09that extra screen space is up to you
04:11those looking for a larger font size
04:13should choose the 1040 with the same
04:16number of fields on the data grid screen
04:18the figures on the 1040 unnoticeably
04:21larger and more visible or if we tickle
04:24the equation you can choose to display
04:26more Fields without the same reduction
04:28in font size to be clear though both the
04:311040 and 840 display a maximum of 10
04:35fields on a data screen the 1040 won't
04:38show you a 12 bagger or more keen
04:41Navigators attracted by multo map can
04:44also make the case for choosing the 1040
04:46everyone else will be driven by desire
04:49but aren't we all buttons buttons here
04:52on a touch screen with Mark the 1040
04:55sticks with the historic Garmin
04:57touchscreen approach of sporting only
04:59three buttons the two on the front edge
05:02plus the on off button on the side the
05:04840 has gone a bit novel by adding the
05:08extra four buttons normally seen on
05:10garmin's non-touch screen devices so if
05:13there are times or conditions when you
05:16can't won't simply will not use the
05:19touchscreen then the buttons can be used
05:22to do the equivalent task scroll through
05:24menus select an option call in a
05:27tactical airstrike the 840 will
05:29therefore suit the naysay Brigade that
05:32cannot bring themselves to believe that
05:34a touchscreen could possibly work in the
05:37rain or those touching cloth gloves
05:40whereas the mount cleat type thingy as
05:42we highly unqualified bike mechanics
05:45call it is different on the 1040 it's
05:48machined metal presumably aluminum
05:50aluminum and I have to say it rather
05:53nice the 840 has the standard plastic
05:55version albeit high quality plastic and
05:58yes my history degree involved the
06:01Materials Science components both cleaty
06:03cleats include the electrical contacts
06:06that allow holy communion with the
06:08Garmin charge power pack battery life
06:11don't matter it seems the 1040s extra
06:14heft accommodates a larger battery so
06:17unlike me in many domains it goes for
06:20longer stats based on the company's
06:23demanding scenario loads of sensors
06:25super duper satellite tracking
06:27notification overload and messing around
06:29with it a lot they claim a 1040 battery
06:32life of up to 35 hours sun solar and up
06:36to 45 hours Avec du Soleil the 840
06:39claims up to 32 hours with solar and up
06:42to 26 hours not with so there's a
06:45difference but let's have some
06:46contextual intercourse the equivalent
06:49claim the 8 30 was up to 20 hours and
06:52the 1030 plus is was up to 24 hours
06:55neither of these devices ever felt to me
06:58like over demanding plug cravers I think
07:01we're in the territory where the battery
07:03life differences between the two devices
07:05don't matter a great deal to the vast
07:08number of riders and yes I agree that
07:11you are a special Snowflake and not in
07:13that vast number but let's get naked
07:16together there will always be some
07:18riders that need a very long battery
07:20life even for those guys both the 840
07:24and the 1040 give over 24 hours more
07:28with the solar option and they can
07:30always supplement where they charge
07:32power pack for those of us in the
07:34remaining 99 we're surely at levels here
07:37where you can't notice the difference I
07:40can't remember what I had for lunch
07:42yesterday never mind whether I was
07:44annoyed the last time I had to charge my
07:47bike GPS so for me the excellent battery
07:50life box is ticked for both and it's not
07:53really a factor that drives my choice of
07:56which to buy should you buy the solar
07:58version then uh no best case the solar
08:01option adds 10 hours that's under 1040
08:04for the 840 Garmin specs claim an
08:07additional six hours but I don't live in
08:10the sunny Uplands of best case I
08:12certainly don't ride in them the 1040
08:15non-solar option gives 35 hours of
08:17battery juice supposedly and even
08:20allowing for a bit of promo exuberance
08:22and Battery degradation over time that's
08:25a million more hours than I need before
08:27having to plug it into charge so for me
08:30solar recharging doesn't pelvic nudge
08:33the needle with sufficient thrust to
08:36justify the extra cost just my John
08:38Thomas worth your solar game will of
08:41course vary and just so we're clear I
08:44bought both the edge 1040 and 840 in
08:46solar versions because I am a grade A
08:49pork whistle alternatives to the edge
08:511040 and 840 well you could buy one of
08:55the older generation edges the 1030 Plus
08:58or the 830 both are available at prices
09:01lower than these and do 95 of the things
09:05that you'll realistically use on the
09:071040 and 840 for percent equates to the
09:11older root-based version of climb Pro
09:13one percent two miscellaneous I've got
09:16both the 1030 plus and the 830 and I
09:19like both I wouldn't have bought the
09:21newer devices if it wasn't to feed the
09:24ever hungry more of this Bike Tech half
09:26a channel aside from that if it's
09:28touchscreen you're after I'd be
09:30considering the Hammerhead Kuru 2 the
09:32battery life is a mere fraction of the
09:35edges albeit fine for my distances and
09:38it doesn't have the undevice training
09:40science Wizardry but the matte color
09:42touch screen is beautiful and the user
09:45interface just about Shades the 1040 840
09:48even despite recent improvements to the
09:51latter if we move to non-touchscreen
09:53Alternatives we're straying further from
09:55the market segment that Garmin is
09:57targeting with the 1040 and 840
10:00nonetheless if you want to go there my
10:02pick of the button poppers is the Wahoo
10:05element bolt V2 videos of all of these
10:08computers are on my channel so give them
