00:19you articulate can you tell us how you
00:21feel at this moment uh I would say
00:24energized because of the holiday I had
00:27uh excited really looking forward to the
00:30which is ahead of me we're of course
00:33looking at the training round which is
00:35which is fantastic so there are a lot of
00:37things to look forward to the the team
00:39that's coming back in a few weeks and um
00:43yeah looking forward to a new start of
00:45uh after after a nice period I had at
00:49fineart can we get some housekeeping out
00:51of the way because you've heard your
00:52name pronounced all kinds of different
00:54ways let's get that sorted now uh I've
00:56heard an Anie Anna how do you prounce it
01:00correctly I've heard Arie as well a few
01:02times when I played Celtic Brandon
01:04Rogers he he a few times called me Arie
01:07uh I listen to that name but we in
01:09Holland would would call me Arna which
01:12is not an easy one to pronounce so I
01:15listen to AR as well but I would prefer
01:18AR yeah the scouters will call you
01:20probably all kinds of different names
01:22between between now and then yeah as
01:24long as it's positive I'm it will be
01:26positive how you talked a little bit
01:28there about how you you'd spent that
01:30time in between your last club and this
01:32there there's been a bit of time between
01:34you being announced as Liverpool manager
01:36and now was that a deliberate thing from
01:38view I think it it is because of a few
01:41reasons uh first and foremost maybe the
01:44farewell of uran which was really
01:46special from what I saw was on the same
01:48day I left the fin as well but I did see
01:51a few things and afterwards there was uh
01:55even a bit a few more farewells from
01:57what I saw so I think it was fair to him
01:59and to the club and to the supporters to
02:01wait a bit and then to come in uh apart
02:04from that i' I went on a holiday uh like
02:06you probably can see um and um yeah I
02:11think now is a good moment to arrive
02:13here and to talk to you and uh but but
02:17let be let's be clear that I don't I
02:19don't start today I've been a lot of in
02:21contact with staff members already from
02:24from from people who are working here to
02:26the new staff members that are coming in
02:28and of course uh almost every day uh
02:31Richard and me are calling each other um
02:35because we have to talk this is also a
02:36very important face for the new season
02:39to make sure the team is um is ready and
02:42we have to we have to plan the preseason
02:45so a lot of things have have been done
02:47but more on the background and now I'm
02:48sitting here in front of you uh I think
02:50it's uh it's a good moment to do it now
02:53for for the few reasion I just gave you
02:55how easy is that for you to switch off
02:57this really exciting period that now you
03:00you've started but you know that moment
03:01where you sit on a sun bed and you
03:03you're trying to think about the season
03:04that's just happened but also looking
03:06forward to to the years ahead here at
03:08Liverpool as well are are you somebody
03:10that finds it easy to switch off no I
03:12don't think if it's me or anyone else
03:14ever switches off but uh it's it's been
03:17a good few weeks because uh I can look
03:20back at a very nice time at my former
03:22club finor and really looking forward to
03:24go to a club like Liverpool so uh there
03:27there have been uh Summers that it it
03:30hasn't been this good because that's
03:31also uh the life of a former football
03:34player and uh and a manager but this
03:36summer was really really nice because of
03:39because of the fact that I left finard
03:41in a good place and I'm coming to a club
03:44that uran left in a good place so uh
03:47yeah was it has it's already been a good
03:50summer can we talk about Jurgen klopp
03:52because you do replace an iconic figure
03:54he's clearly somebody that you have huge
03:57for yeah uh uh I'm 45 now watching
04:02football for a long time and watching
04:03football a lot and uh I think this been
04:06an era where everybody looked at the
04:08Barcelona side of Chavi Nesta and Messi
04:11the Rivalry there was between Real
04:12Madrid with Cristiano Ronaldo being
04:14there and I think when that came to an
04:17end the new rivalry in European football
04:21uh came because of uan he managed the
04:24Liverpool and and Pep Guardiola of
04:26course managed the Man City and I think
04:28for everyone who loves football was a
04:30fantastic era to watch the both of them
04:33getting the best out of each other and
04:35um yeah I've seen a lot of games of
04:37Liverpool a lot of games of city as well
04:40and when you live in Europe the Premier
04:42League is probably uh the nicest League
04:45to follow so um yeah he's done a
04:48tremendous job over here and and I'm
04:51really happy with that as a fan but now
04:54as as as his successor I think his
04:56successor we would say yeah uh uh he
05:00left like I just said Liverpool in in
05:02the best possible way I think so uh very
05:05good team fans are uh very good as well
05:09um so looking forward to it was it
05:12important that you spoke with him we
05:14know that you had a longstanding
05:15friendship with with pep linders but was
05:17it important you spoke to to Joga yeah
05:21um I did the same with my former clubs
05:23when I when I um when I started over
05:25there but I think if someone uh worked
05:28at a club for 9 years I've been so
05:30successful uh you want to know all about
05:32it from him and you also want to know uh
05:36um of the players although I think it's
05:39also important to get my own opinion
05:40about that but uh all the staff that
05:43that that that are staying here um so
05:47you can only use all this information he
05:50has because he did so well uh not only
05:53in terms of results but I think also uh
05:56everybody saw uh in his farewell but
05:59also the years before that how popular
06:01he was and um he gave me more than a few
06:05good tips but I think what standed out
06:07for me was that he was so uh happy for
06:10me and that that that he had um and I
06:13think he said that in the media as well
06:14that he would be my biggest fan from now
06:17on because he supports Liverpool in the
06:18best possible way and you don't see this
06:21very often so uh says a lot about his
06:23character the way he handled this
06:25situation as well um it's very important
06:27that you are your own man in all of this
06:29as well but we look at your style from
06:31what we've seen on on TV you know your
06:34passion for developing Elite young
06:36players as well there are a few
06:37similarities between you and him
06:40perhaps I think there are and uh I think
06:43that's also one of the reasons why I
06:45came in because uh I think they uh the
06:48way uh Liverpool scouted me I don't
06:52think if that's the right word to use
06:53but I'm not sure about that but but they
06:56were looking for not the exact same type
07:00I think when something has been
07:01successful a certain way of playing you
07:03would you would like to uh extend this
07:06or to go on with this and um it's
07:09probably one of the reasons why they
07:11came to me as well um yeah it is my
07:14style uh but I think it's the style of
07:16many modern coaches at the moment of of
07:18guine club and um I think at a big Club
07:22where I worked at final as well it is
07:24probably the only style you can play to
07:26have the ball a lot to to have a lot of
07:29energy and uh I think also now there are
07:31comparisons between the club I just left
07:34behind and the club I'm going to work
07:36work for now the fans love to see uh
07:39both fans love to see a team that wants
07:41to do everything to win a game and um
07:45and if things things are tough uh they
07:48try to do everything to turn the game
07:49around and I think that has been done by
07:51Liverpool many times and it's been done
07:53by my former side finer many times as
07:56well it is a big change but change is
07:58exciting too isn't it
08:00it is uh it is uh you just said it's
08:03wearing a New Jersey um and of course
08:06there's change but a lot of things are
08:08still the same as well so uh I think the
08:10players are still the same which is
08:12probably the most important thing
08:14because in the end it comes down to the
08:16players and I think the fans are still
08:18the same so many things are also still
08:21still the same uh and um yeah we're
08:25going to try to work on what Juran left
08:27behind and uh we will see a lot of
08:30similar things but of course I bring my
08:32own things to the table as well and I
08:34think uh that's also what is expected of
08:36me your title is officially head coach
08:39what does that mean for for you here at
08:42Liverpool yeah for me it's it's it's
08:44normal because this is the way it is in
08:48Holland um I don't think there's much of
08:51a change between a head coach or a
08:53manager is just uh about being a head
08:56coach I can fully uh go into the things
08:59I would like to do so work with the team
09:02uh prepare the team in the best possible
09:03way and me and Richard are are going to
09:06work together when it comes to to
09:07transfers but not only the two of us
09:09there's a big back room staff included
09:11to this as well and I think for me it's
09:15the way I've worked always and for me is
09:17the ideal ideal way of working because I
09:19can I can use my the the most of my time
09:23by working with the team and the time
09:26that is left uh will probably be a bit
09:28for the family and a bit uh to talk with
09:31Richard about how we can strengthen the
09:33team but uh we already have a really
09:38uh can you tell us a little bit about
09:40when Liverpool's interest became real
09:42for you and and there's a possibility of
09:45you taken the job and that moment where
09:46you decide that this was the right move
09:51um I think those moments are all always
09:54uh very private because nobody needs to
09:56know about it so the first time you hear
09:59that Liverpool is interested in you you
10:00have to keep it between me and my wife
10:04um I always knew that that it had to be
10:07a fantastic Club where I would leave
10:104 uh and this was Liverpool and the
10:13league as well so um I think it was a
10:17year ago I was in the interest of a few
10:18premier league clups as well but I
10:19decided to extend at finor with the idea
10:22of staying there two more
10:24seasons uh but uh after a year um Li
10:29ipool came along and then yeah like I
10:31just told you about the Rivalry between
10:34City and uh and Liverpool and many games
10:37we as football fans saw um it wasn't a
10:42difficult choice to make although like I
10:43said I was really happy at finor the way
10:46I could work there with the with the
10:47fans with the staff with the players but
10:50um this was the possibility I had to
10:53take can you tell us about you then
10:55about about your style again I mentioned
10:57before that we we learn from what we see
10:59on on TV but how would you describe
11:01yourself as a head coach your
11:04cornerstones I think when I when I when
11:07I come in in the first first days in the
11:08first week I'm here I will be really
11:11focused on the training grounds uh I
11:13think there is the place where you can
11:15influence the most uh and you have to
11:17influence the most because you have to
11:18influence your players coming to G model
11:21and um and your game plan and I think
11:23that's where it's all about to find a
11:25way of playing which suits the players
11:26best and then adjust Maybe with the c
11:29plan a bit where we can win a few things
11:34um but that's all tactical and I think
11:35there's something else towards being a
11:38head coach or a manager the way you want
11:39to call it and that is the relations you
11:41have with people relationship I have
11:44with my staff but also uh the players uh
11:48how they get along with each other and
11:49the relation between staff and players
11:52and I think this was one of the things
11:54looking at it from the outside where
11:55yugen was great at as well apart from
11:57playing style and uh um that is a
12:00challenge because I'm 100% sure that
12:02many people who are still at this club
12:05still love him and we have to find a way
12:08that people get used to me and used to
12:10the new staff that's coming in and get
12:13the same energy in this building um and
12:16eventually into the stadium as well
12:18because that's where it's all about we
12:20have to perform during uh during the
12:21games but to perform there I think it's
12:24important to have a good idea of how we
12:29a good energy within the team and within
12:31the people who are working at Liverpool
12:34it seems from what I've read as well
12:35that you take a lot of learning
12:36experiences from other sports it's not
12:38just football you take interest in in
12:40what you can learn as a coach from from
12:43things yeah not not technically of
12:46course because uh those are different
12:48sports but the way some some sports
12:51handle uh the mental side of the game
12:54can help you and I sometimes used it in
12:56uh in team meetings before a game so I
12:59try to use examples of cycling or um or
13:05at the moment we've I think we've seen
13:07Roland G Ro and we've seen jakovic
13:09winning in a really tough game and I
13:11think that's one of his qualities that
13:13he can also win the game is not going
13:16his way he can still find some way to
13:18win it and I think there are there are
13:21uh those are examples you can use to
13:23words players as well but let be clear
13:26we were mostly talking about football
13:27and it's not going to it's not going to
13:29be the situation that players are going
13:31to listen to all kind of other sports
13:34sometimes I use it but only if I think
13:36it's necessary we spoke about change
13:39just a moment ago it's a big change
13:40behind the scenes as well you will bring
13:42with you your support staff your coaches
13:45can you tell us a little bit about about
13:47them their personalities and and what
13:49they will offer this playing Squad and
13:50and this fan base at
13:52Liverpool like I just said
13:55already yugan left the club in a really
13:57good place left the team in a really
13:58good place I think we have a lot of
13:59quality and and and the way they played
14:01last season was was already impressive
14:05um so we we we are going to build from
14:10um of course you want to take some
14:12people with you as well because they
14:14know who you are they know your playing
14:16style and they can translate this to the
14:17other persons in the staff as well but
14:20if you go to a club like Liverpool you
14:21can assume and I already noticed that
14:23that there are a lot of good people
14:25working here as well so we're going to
14:27use the best of Hope The Best of Both
14:29Worlds to implement a few things from us
14:32and to use the knowledge that is in this
14:34inside this club already because of the
14:36nine years yugan and his staff worked
14:38here yeah I bring in uh s kulov who's
14:41been my assistant for a few years now at
14:43fer I work with him longer uh ago I work
14:47with him at Cen as well he was the
14:50assistant of Ron Kuman of the Dutch
14:51national team as well um but uh he's
14:55going to join me now from the start um
14:59a bit older than me I think not so much
15:01but a bit older than me um because we
15:05work together for such a long time I
15:07think the both of us know exactly what
15:09we want when it comes to game model
15:11playing style and I think that helps
15:14then then we will bring in uh a
15:16performance coach as well who's going to
15:18help me and the club with um yeah how
15:23would I put this in English words with
15:26with with the way we are working on
15:29physicality side physical side um and I
15:34think us three have worked together at
15:36final for three years now and um yeah we
15:40know how we want to work which is of
15:42course uh normal and then there's um
15:45replacement in the goalkeeping staff as
15:46well we've brought in Fabian OT Who's
15:49the who who was working at bisho Mission
15:51kbach and is still now with the USA team
15:56America so those are the first
15:59uh uh positions we filled in and I think
16:01we are still looking for one or two
16:03other positions and I just said in the
16:05beginning of the interview that Richard
16:06and me are calling each other a lot not
16:09only about this but also about the
16:11positions we still have to fill in yeah
16:13and recruitment will be a big part of
16:14that as well as has that been part of of
16:16those conversations with Richard yeah
16:18and it's also been part of my spending
16:20my time in the in the last few weeks so
16:23um uh of course uh if you bring in
16:27Fabian which I didn't know before uh you
16:30have conversations meetings with him
16:32together with Richard and um to to bring
16:36the best possible uh uh person in we
16:38could find and I think uh in the
16:41situation of Fabian we will manag to do
16:43that uh he's regarded as one of the most
16:47interesting goalkeeper coaches there is
16:49at the moment and uh in the meetings we
16:52had I I I I felt this as well so um
16:55still one or two positions to fill in
16:57and we are talking about this having
16:59meetings uh about this of course as well
17:02it was a a squad that finished on 82
17:04points you mentioned before it's been
17:05left in a good place so you must feel
17:07that is it's in a good place to go again
17:09and go against strong this
17:10squad yeah definitely I think 82 points
17:13is a result of playing style uh always
17:15the points you you get is always a
17:18result of the way you play and uh I've
17:20seen many games already I've seen many
17:21training sessions as well and and and of
17:25course the fans can see the games so
17:29uh we have some very good players but I
17:31also seen a lot of um training sessions
17:34already and I think this is where you
17:36bring the culture uh and they were
17:38always working hard like the fany during
17:40the game and um real good team real good
17:45players uh managed to to be on top for a
17:48very long time but I think in the end we
17:51would all love to see Liverpool a bit
17:52higher than the third place and this is
17:54the challenge we are facing now to build
17:57on from what we have and and hopefully
17:59and uh I have all the confidence in this
18:03players uh that we can that we can add a
18:07few things where we hopefully can get a
18:08bit more points than 82 which is
18:10necessary with the likes of Arsenal and
18:13um and City to end up uh hopefully a bit
18:18higher than we did this season it's
18:21fascinating to hear you talk not just
18:22about the fact that you watch so many of
18:24the games but you would even go back and
18:26watch training sessions so that you know
18:28that you dig quite deep into into the
18:30history of what last season looked back
18:31behind the scenes as well yeah there are
18:34two things uh to do this of course to
18:37get to know more about the players
18:38because mostly you see them during the
18:40games and you want to know also what the
18:43what the culture is how they train and
18:45what they are used to and I think it's
18:47always interesting if you are the
18:48successor of yugan club and this situ
18:50and also papan lers who did who does
18:52quite a bit of work on the on the
18:55training pitch to see what their ideas
18:58were on the training pitch and um I
19:01think uh many successful managers have
19:03said this we all try to steal a bit from
19:06each other and uh mostly this is done by
19:09looking at the games but if you can see
19:12the way they train that can only help
19:13you but uh that one thing be clear the
19:16the players are not going to get all the
19:18same exercises again we will Implement
19:20our own things but uh it's interesting
19:23to see what they did also during the
19:24week what has this period been like for
19:27you as as the boss in terms of how you
19:29speak to players do you leave them to
19:31their International duties at the moment
19:33or have you reached out to a few of them
19:34to find out how they are I think I've
19:36reached out to a few of them all of them
19:39after uran left because I thought that
19:41was really important to to to be fair to
19:44uran and be fair to the players because
19:46um they had to end the season and I
19:49don't think I would be really happy if
19:51if if my successor would have called
19:52players before I left the club so um and
19:56then I think it's normal to start with
19:57the captain which was Virgil which was
19:59an easy one for me because we could
20:01speak Dutch um and from there on I
20:04called a few others but but but not many
20:07of them because I think they're all most
20:09of them are with uh in preparation or at
20:13this moment playing uh at the euros and
20:15the other ones some other ones are at
20:17the cup America preparation so I think
20:20um yeah the best way is to keep to keep
20:24a certain distance but also be
20:26interested in them as well and um hoping
20:29that most of them especially the Dutch
20:31will stay as long as possible away uh so
20:35that they will reach the final um and
20:38then afterwards I will get to meet them
20:40and I think that's a better way of of
20:43getting to know each other than by phone
20:44or by uh Zoom meetings fixtures for the
20:48new season of fresh from being released
20:49I think it's seven weeks now before it
20:51all gets under way that will go very
20:53quickly that period so what are your
20:54priorities in that next seven
20:56weeks I think in Pre season is all about
20:59getting players fit um and get your game
21:03idea your game model into the into the
21:06players and therefore we have quite a
21:08lot of training time with a few of them
21:11and depends on how far players will go
21:13into the tournaments they are playing
21:14how many time do is to work with with
21:16these players but like you already
21:19mentioned uh playing style will not be
21:22completely different but uh would be
21:25strange if we would do exactly similar
21:27things because I'm not a
21:29uh although I'm the replacement of
21:30yurgen club I'm not exactly similar to
21:32him so uh we try uh with the players
21:36that come in uh in the beginning which
21:39are quite a lot of them already
21:41Implement our idea of football as soon
21:43as we can and um and when the rest comes
21:47in a bit later hopefully the ones who
21:50already can help us as a playing as a
21:53train uh coaching staff to um that they
21:57know what what is being expected and
21:59then probably it will go uh as fast as
22:02possible because we have to be ready at
22:04the first game with with if switch away
22:06and before that comes the the US tour
22:08you'll lead your team in The Dugout for
22:11the first time in Pittsburgh you must be
22:13excited for that yeah I think it's
22:16always special uh to to have your games
22:19if it's in the United States from what
22:21been told to me the stadiums were quite
22:22full or completely full uh that's a
22:25special way of starting your career at
22:28um at Liverpool but especially uh if you
22:31go to a new club the first time is
22:34always special first time arriving here
22:36for the first training session first
22:37time leading a session and first time
22:40leading a game will be special but the
22:42most of course I'm looking forward to is
22:45leading a game at anfield and um but we
22:48have to wait a while before that happens
22:51we spoke a little bit about fin or at
22:53the start you must be in a wonderful
22:55place mentally now to have left them
22:57amongst Europe's Elite again always
22:59probably quite sad to leave a club that
23:01you have such a a big part in your life
23:03though yeah I think it was during the
23:05interview I said that last season I had
23:07the chance to go to the Premier League
23:09as well I decided to stay because I I
23:11felt that things weren't done yet um
23:15when I started there Club was in quite a
23:19difficult Place uh didn't had a lot of
23:21money ended up Fifth I think uh and we
23:25could change that around and and now
23:26with two successive seasons of Champions
23:29League winning the title ones winning
23:31the cup ones I think and the value the
23:34squad has now has been completely
23:35different than three years ago I think
23:38it's fair to say that um that I left
23:41final in the good players and I'm I have
23:44um all the belief that the new head
23:46coach over there will uh will do a great
23:47job there as well because he's
23:49inheriting a good culture and a very
23:52good team as well just that thought
23:53though of of of being at anfield for the
23:56first competitive game is is there
23:57something in your your mind that just
23:59thinks that will be such a special day
24:01for for one for you as as Liverpool
24:03manager yeah I think it is uh every new
24:07club you go to and it's your first home
24:08game is special uh I remember it being
24:11special at Fino and I'm expecting it to
24:13be really special here in in Liverpool
24:15as well but like I said the first thing
24:17I'm going to look at is the first
24:18training session we have and um and then
24:22afterwards all the sessions that that
24:24come after and and and and the games we
24:26will play and we we have to take is
24:28really serious to be the best possible
24:30team we can be at the first game at
24:33ipswitch and the second home game
24:35against BR brenford and they sing You'll
24:37Never Walk Alone like the do well I I
24:41think I've already said that there are a
24:42few similarities between finer and and
24:47um uh it's uh both our cities along
24:50alongside the river so uh people work in
24:53the ducks ducks is I think the English
24:54word for it yeah it's uh
24:58working class uh uh fans that that
25:02appreciate seeing the team and I
25:05think these clubs these these clubs like
25:08like fer and um and liver prooof from
25:11what I saw from it are it just means a
25:14bit more for the fans it just means a
25:16bit more uh if the team does well than
25:18at some other places around the world
25:21and this is what I felt that fin out and
25:23I'm I'm I'm I'm expecting to feel the
25:25same here at nfield as well yeah and
25:27we're looking forward to it too um one
25:29last job hopefully for you and that is
25:31your camera there it seems like a good
25:33way to finish if there's a message from
25:35you to to the fans so speak to them
25:38direct you surprised me a bit on this
25:42um no I think like you said there is a
25:46there is a change uh and um but the
25:49change hopefully isn't that big because
25:51we still have the same players we still
25:53have the same fans and if the both of
25:55them are going to do the same job that
25:59a lot more easy so uh I'm expecting them
26:01to show up again the upcoming season and
26:04the same for the players and I will do
26:06everything within my interest and power
26:08to um to lead the team in the best
26:11possible way very best of luck we're
