00:00- Now if you want to improve
your body fat percentage
00:02you ideally want to know
where it is at today
00:04and how it's changing as you
change your diet and exercise.
00:08I've always been trying to
reduce my body fat percentage.
00:10You know, it'd be nice to be shredded,
00:12but maybe just healthy is good enough.
00:14In the past, I've compared a cheap
00:15versus expensive body fat scale.
00:17But today, I wanted to
compare every single one.
00:19From the Samsung smartwatch to the Bod Pod
00:21and every other smart body
fat scanner thing I could find
00:24versus the gold standard,
which is the Dexa Scan.
00:27- The Dexa Scan is not
the golden standard.
00:30- Alright, well it's the best we've got.
00:32My roommate Tajas and I, we're doing
00:34a fitness transformation competition.
00:38So we're competing over 90 days
00:39for who can increase their
fitness levels the most.
00:42You've been skipping the gym, no?
00:43- No, I'm not skipping the gym man.
00:46- And we need a way to
measure our body fat.
00:48- Did you wanna get schooled in body fat?
00:51- This is one of many videos
of testing different tools
00:54to help transform our
bodies and our health.
00:56Turn on your notifications
if you wanna see more.
00:57We're gonna be rating
these body fat devices
01:01Can we get the value that we need
01:02with the least amount of money possible?
01:03Time and convenience.
01:04How long does this take?
01:05Do I need to travel anywhere?
01:06Accuracy and precision.
01:08Is it gonna give me the same
amount of data if I hop back
01:10on it five times in the same five minutes?
01:12Integration with other wearables.
01:13So a lot of fitness trackers take
01:15into account your body weight.
01:16So if you're able to
update it automatically
01:18from your smart device, then
those devices are more likely
01:20to be accurate in terms
of all the other things
01:22they're predicting for you.
01:23But Shervin don't you say
all wearables are wrong
01:25and some are helpful?
01:27Take all this data with
a grain of salt, okay?
01:28We'll go through a category
of four different kinds
01:31of body fat scanners.
01:32I did want to get Greg Doucette
01:33who's actually the real gold standard.
01:35- Eye laser eye vision is
way better, more accurate.
01:39- I DMed him on Instagram
but he didn't reply.
01:40Maybe if he comments on this
video, I can post an update.
01:43If somebody knows him, can we find
01:44out how much he charges
for a body fat measurement?
01:47Next is gonna be the hand stuff
01:49- Sounds really weird.
01:50- First up, we've got this
Omron handheld body fat scanner.
01:52I remember using this
when I was like 17 years
01:54old when I first went to the gym.
01:55Never seen one of these ever again.
01:57- Omron is a similar
brand as the other one
02:00as that scale right over there.
02:01But this is just the hand part.
02:02Are you normal or are you an athlete?
02:04I think you're normal.
02:05- Hey man, put me as an athlete.
02:07I'm not like a couch potato.
02:09You know I'm active
but I'm not an athlete.
02:11- I'll just do normal.
02:14I'm just gonna grab it.
02:1590 degrees, 15.5% body fat,
27.6 bmi, 9.8% body fat
02:23The margin of error is crazy here.
02:29- That normal, just think I'm very normal.
02:30- Okay, 18.5, you think that's accurate?
02:32- No I think higher than that
02:33- Convenience factor.
02:34This was absolutely the
fastest, it took Seven seconds.
02:38Price. This was like three, $400.
02:40Pretty pricey for a small
piece of technology.
02:43Why? I don't know anyone who has one.
02:44integration with other wearables.
02:45It just shows you on display.
02:46There's no app and there's no
Apple Health or Google Fit.
02:49Next is the Aura Strap
02:50- Okay
- This thing is very similar
02:52just much smaller and half the price.
02:54This is a hundred
- Half impress on that?
02:55- This this one is $350.
03:01- Not including the Apple watch though.
03:03- Not including the Apple watch.
03:05And you wanna keep your elbows, your arms
03:06away from each other.
03:07And I'm gonna hit to start.
03:09All right, so this one
sometimes throws errors too.
03:11- You feel the electricity
03:14- Do, Do you actually feel something?
03:17- All right, it's almost done.
03:20So that was consistent.
03:25So my body fat went up 1%.
03:27So automatically pulled in my weight
03:29from the scales that we just
used, which is really cool.
03:32This took about 36 seconds.
03:33Sometimes it can be buggy and
you have to kind of retry it
03:35but for the most part it works
like 80 to 90% of the time.
03:38Integration with wearables
03:39it automatically imports all
your data into Apple Health.
03:41So that's super convenient.
03:43Not everyone has an iPhone.
03:44What about us Android users?
03:46Samsung Galaxy Watch five Pro.
03:47You're gonna put your
fingers, your middle pointer
03:49finger there and it, it's
gonna measure your body fat.
03:53- Your body composition.
03:54Hold your armpit, arms up.
03:55Yep. And then it's gonna
give you a percentage.
04:00It's built into the Samsung watch.
04:02Isn't that kind of cool?
04:03- The animation's sick.
04:0689.7, muscle mass, fat mass,
42.4, 20.7 body fat again
04:11so consistently is
showing the right amount
04:13but it's definitely more different
04:14than everything else we've used so far.
04:18- 21% body fat at 163 pounds.
04:21- Okay, 3%,
- 3.4, 3% body fat.
04:26- That makes no sense.
04:28- Price of these watches.
04:29Four to $500 average in terms
of time and convenience.
04:32And it automatically imports
your data in a Samsung Health.
04:35And then you can pull
that data into any other
04:36Google Health stuff that you want to.
04:38Full body and scale.
04:39So some of these scales you
just stand on and it's gonna
04:41send an electric current
through your legs and then
04:43down your other leg and
get an estimated body
04:46The full body ones, you'll
actually hold onto a handle.
04:48So you're getting a current through both.
04:49I would like to think the full body ones
04:51are a little more accurate.
04:52This body fat scale is actually illegal
04:54in the United States,
04:55so I had to fly to Germany to go buy it.
04:57That's how much I care about this video.
04:59This is the newest Withings scale.
05:00Go ahead and just step on it,
05:01it connects via wifi.
05:03It knows who I am already, so it picks me
05:13So I gained a little bit of body fat.
05:15- Average time, 30 seconds.
05:16There's a Withings app,
which is super easy.
05:18I haven't had issues using
it over a period of time.
05:21It connects directly to wifi.
05:22So I don't need my phone
nearby and it automatically
05:24imports all my data into Apple Health.
05:26This is probably the
cleanest and least buggy
05:28of all the apps and softwares out there.
05:31Just go ahead and step on
05:35- Did it get your body fat?
05:37- It never changes from 12.5%.
05:40- Doesn't that make you feel good?
05:41- No man, cause there's no way I'm 12.5%
05:44muscle mass 100 and 37 pounds.
05:46- What? Okay, that makes no sense
05:48- Exactly. So this is by
far the least accurate.
05:51These pads apparently only shoot up
05:54through your legs and back down.
05:56But as you can tell, most
05:57of my body fat and everything
is here in my tummy section.
06:00- This one's way cheaper.
06:01$20 versus like the $350
version of the withings.
06:05took just as long, 30 seconds.
06:06The app is pretty good.
06:07It integrates with Apple Health,
but I sometimes have issues
06:09with the integration.
06:10It doesn't always download my body weight.
06:12So I have to like delete
and reinstall the app.
06:13A little more buggy, but it works.
06:15Next is the Omron full body.
06:17You just press here,
select you as the person.
06:19I think I already set
your height and weight
06:22extend your arms at 90 degrees.
06:30- what's going on buddy?
06:33Are you, is this something
you haven't been telling me?
06:35- 19% body fat, 58 years old
06:39Price is relatively
high for what it offers.
06:41There is no integration with wearables
06:43and the average speed around 30 seconds.
06:45Last is probably the most
popular brand that I've seen
06:47at gyms, which is InBody.
06:49- It seems the most accurate.
06:51- It seems the most accurate,
whatever that means.
06:53You just blindly put trust
in one brand over the other.
06:56- Start the InBody test.
06:58- First it measures my body weight.
06:59- [Inbody Scale] Place your
thumbs on the oval electrodes.
07:03- [Inbody Scale] keep your arm straight
07:04- and then it says pose
- [Inbody Scale] your arms
07:05- you grab the bars.
07:09So this is frustrating.
07:11You have to deal with this.
07:12You're not gonna want to use this device.
07:14- 23% body fat, 70 pounds of muscle,
07:2062 pounds of muscle,
07:2113.8% body fat, 101 pounds of muscle.
07:25And yesterday I did do it twice
07:27and there was a one pound different
07:28in muscle as well as a almost
1% difference in body fat.
07:32So not sure how trustable that is either.
07:35This one was the buggiest out
of all of these smart devices
07:38sometimes I have to step on it again
07:39I tried wetting my feet and
try to follow all the protocols
07:42$350, definitely on the higher rate.
07:44But this also has an app
requires you to actually
07:46open the app, hit start
test, get on the InBody
07:49and then it syncs via
Bluetooth to your app and then
07:51pulls it into Apple Health.
07:52This was hands down the
second slowest body fat
07:55It took around 70 seconds and
that's if it doesn't fail.
07:58Tajas loves this one
because Imbody is just
07:59a popular brand name.
08:01But I do like the app and how
they make the trends really
08:03visible and easy to see.
08:04Computer Vision had two devices.
08:06Amazon Halo and the Zozo fit suit.
08:08Amazon first cause you
don't have to put anything
08:11- You're gonna pull up the Halo app.
08:12You can go ahead to data
08:13and I can measure my body under body.
08:15So we're gonna tap the camera.
08:17There's a whole scan
checklist, start scan.
08:19- [Halo App] Relax and hold
this pose for the entire scan.
08:23- [Halo App] Turn right
and face sideways again
08:30- You never done this?
08:32- What'd you think of that experience?
08:33- Just four photos and then
they figure out your body fat
08:36based on your height and weight.
08:37Waist to hip ratio is 0.89 27% body fat.
08:42- Do you think that's accurate?
08:44- 18%, So just the like a point difference
08:47doing it the second time.
08:48So you know it's relatively consistent-ish
08:50- Now the Amazon halo
does require a membership
08:52and I think you can buy
08:53like the bedside device
or the wristband device.
08:55I have both, but I almost never use them.
08:59- This was definitely on the faster end.
09:00You'll actually set up your phone
09:01and it takes four photos of
you processes that information
09:04and gives you an estimated
body fat percentage
09:06faster than almost all the scales.
09:07Next was the Zozo Fit Suit.
09:08Now the last ones the funniest one.
09:10This one requires you to
put on a set of clothes
09:12out of all the devices, I think
09:13this is the only one that
gives you body measurements.
09:15So we can see like the
thickness of my biceps.
09:18It's another friction point.
09:19You gotta put clothes on
09:21you gotta make sure you
don't lose these clothes.
09:23And this requires like a
ton more photos compared
09:26- I am a super hero.
09:27- [Zozo App] Move six feet
away, turn right to one o'clock
09:31turn right to two o'clock.
09:33- Oh no measurement error,
09:35looks like some parts
of the pants are folded.
09:37I think it might be too small for you.
09:42- [Zozo App] Your scan has
been successfully completed.
09:44- Let's go.
- [Zozo App] You can pick
09:45- Oh, the results are ready.
09:48- So it's gonna say 18.4%
body fat with all these
09:51body measurements, which is really cool.
09:53So as we do the fitness challenge,
I can compare to see how
09:56has my body changed and
why are my calves two
09:58different sizes, 18.5% body fat.
10:01- Everything is so all over the place.
10:03- Yeah, Wi which one do
you want to trust now?
10:05- The one I'm gonna trust,
10:07- foil, body fat and lean mass.
10:09How do we decide who wins
the competition right?
10:11Because if all these numbers are different
10:13what's the metric for who wins?
10:14This was hands down the
slowest one out of all of them.
10:17First you have to put this full suit on.
10:18So pants and a shirt.
10:20Once you've done that, it
took around 96 seconds.
10:22So a minute and a half of going
through the entire process
10:25after the clothes have been put on.
10:26And then you gotta add in
taking all the clothes off.
10:28Whereas with the Amazon halo,
I can just go in my boxers or
10:30really tight shorts depending
on how much you want
10:34And this one takes like,
I don't know, 12 photos
10:37And then the lady's voice
is kind of mean and rude.
10:39It's just very harsh.
10:41- [Zozo App] Turn to eight o'clock
10:42- And you have to like
retake the photos sometimes.
10:43- [Zozo App] Sorry you turn too far,
10:45please turn back to eight O'clock.
10:47- But they do give you
a lot more measurements
10:49in terms of your biceps, your quads
10:51and like overall body measurements too.
10:52But considering the friction point
10:54and how long it takes to start the process
10:56and get your numbers, investing in time.
10:57Whereas like a smart scale
that connects the wifi is hands
11:01You just show up, you stand
measures and you leave.
11:03I do have affiliate links
11:04for every single product I'm
talking about today down below.
11:06So if you do plan to buy any of them
11:07please click that link below.
11:08It really helps support the channel.
11:10And then the last two were
these science and sports labs.
11:13to two different medical
facilities for these.
11:19It's like a spaceship.
11:21- [Bod Pod Employee] Yeah, it's whatever.
11:23And when you're in the machine
11:24it measures your body volume.
11:25Once we have your body volume
11:26we can calculate body density literature.
11:28We know that muscle tissue's
more dense than fat tissue.
11:30So you can pop your body density
11:32into some algorithms that
account for that one.
11:34Go ahead and sit down, the
plastic's gonna be cold.
11:38- [Bod Pod Employee] 3, 2, 1.
11:45- [Cameraman] Wow, that was fast.
11:47- [Cameraman] Oh,
- Ugh!
11:48- [Bod Pod Employee] 28.2
11:50- Takes me back to my swimming days.
11:53- [Cameraman] Oh, what?
11:58- [Bod Pod Employee] Yep, done.
12:01- [Bod Pod Employee] oh, seemed weird.
12:06- [Bod Pod Employee]
Usually I would change it
12:07to this density model actually.
12:11- [Cameraman] Whoa, that's a huge margin.
12:13- [Bod Pod Employee] Different models.
12:14I mean we could even do
it again twice in a row
12:16and see if it gets closer.
12:17Like it's up to you if you
want to, if you want to.
12:22- Yeah. I don't know why it
would be so much more different
12:23from the dexa, but I mean some
12:25like devices are just
different on different
12:26like it's a very, it's a very
12:30because like the only truly
way to measure it accurately
12:32it would be like doing a
like biopsy on a dead body.
12:37- Do you guys do those.
12:38- [Cameraman] Dude, if you were 11%
12:40you would be shredded to a bone.
12:42- How do you know I'm not
12:43- I, I just saw you
shirtless for like 10 hours
12:46and at home you walk
around in your underwear.
12:48I know you're body more
than you do now, brother.
12:50- So time wise, very difficult.
12:52It's not something you can
be doing on a daily basis
12:54from a price perspective,
these are a lot more expensive.
12:56The BOD pod I think was
like 80 to a hundred bucks
12:58So now we're gonna go
to the Dexa scan place.
13:00This is an actual medical office.
13:01We're gonna need to wear
masks and everything
13:03and we're gonna compare
all of these devices to
13:05see how close are they in
comparison to the dexo scan data.
13:08So let's head over there.
13:10- Last May, so almost eight months ago.
13:13we took a Texas scan and I was 29% vodka.
13:17If I'm any lower than
that, it's a win today
13:19because I started a whole running journey.
13:22If not, then I don't believe
in physical health anymore
13:25- Texas scans, right?
13:33And I gained seven pounds
of muscle according to this.
13:38- That's really good.
13:40I haven't been able to do that
13:41in I don't know how many years.
13:42- [Cameraman] How accurate is this?
13:43- It's most accurate.
13:44- [Cameraman] The most accurate.
13:47- How do you feel about yours?
13:49- Pretty good actually.
13:54It's a good day to be Tajas.
14:08You know, for a second I was doubting
14:09that my body was able to
lose fat and gain muscle.
14:11Like just as a human being, I thought
14:13like for some reason I
wasn't able to do that.
14:15And the fact that like
14:17even though it's not a
lot, it showed me that I
14:21there's progress that actually
gotta make me happy, man.
14:23Like I'm, I'm cheesing a little bit.
14:26- 3% less body fat,
two pounds more muscle.
14:33It's expensive and looks cool.
14:35So I gained 6.5 pounds of
muscle and two pounds of fat
14:39which I'm not gonna lie, it's pretty good.
14:41I'll take what I can get.
14:44- You live with your body every day
14:45so you don't see progress.
14:47So it's cool to see by numbers.
14:49However, accurate or not like
it's cool to see that there
14:53- DEXA scan was $200.
14:55This is in New York City Manhattan.
14:56I know it's cheaper
everywhere else in California.
14:59I think I was able to
get it for like $130.
15:01I would say it takes
about one to three hours
15:03cause of travel time and getting there.
15:04The appointments are
approximately 30 minutes long.
15:06And then travel time back home
15:08depending on how far you
live, precision and accuracy
15:10supposedly DEXA scan is
the most accurate device
15:13that you can use out
there within one to 2%.
15:15Now let's start with Cole cause
he didn't do the Dexo scan
15:17but overall these devices
were giving him numbers
15:19from 10% all the way up to 15% body fat.
15:23in itself just shows how
inaccurate these devices can be
15:26and how you have to take
all this information
15:27with a grain of salt.
15:28Tajas is got a range from
12.5% all the way up to 31%.
15:34to his dexoscan was actually
the Amazon Halo and next
15:37the Aura strap and the Omron
full body right after that.
15:40Now leaving the best for last
me, what were my numbers?
15:43It ranged from 15% to like 21% ish.
15:45But what was very fascinating
was the dexoscan got 17.3%
15:50and the BOD Pod gave me 11%.
15:52Like they were drastically different.
15:54And we did the BOD pod twice
15:55so gave me a really, really low number.
15:57So yeah, I'm 11% body fat,
but I'm not sure why that is.
16:00Maybe I'm just shaped
differently or I'm just an alien
16:02and the BOD PODD doesn't work for me.
16:03But the closest for me
were the Amazon Halo
16:05and the zozo fit both within 1%
16:08of the dexoscan and then
next closest was the renpho
16:11with things in body and
on the Omron handheld.
16:13So that was really interesting.
16:14But if we go off this
non-science based approach
16:16of which body fat is the best
16:18I think Amazon Halo wins surprisingly.
16:20Four images straight
outta the selfie camera
16:23on my iPhone takes less than 30 seconds.
16:27it seemed to get the
closest body fat percentage
16:30What was interesting for me was the InBody
16:32and the Samsung Galaxy Watch
had the farthest numbers away
16:34from my actual body fat percentage.
16:36In terms of price, a lot of
these devices range probably
16:38from the 200 to $400 range per device.
16:41But then there's a predicament.
16:43Some of these devices
aren't actually scales
16:44and you need to enter your body weight.
16:46So what I would recommend
is get the cheapest
16:49So like the renpho, which is like $20.
16:51Import your body weight
automatically into your smartphone
16:53and then use your
smartphone Amazon Halo to
16:56visually measure your body fat percentage.
16:58If you're trying to go for
the most accurate number
17:01that I could find using two people.
17:02And if you're a big Peteratia fan like me
17:04he does mention trying to get a dexoscan
17:06at least once a year.
17:07So maybe that's the route to go.
17:08And then on a weekly or daily basis
17:10you could measure your body
weight on a cheap renpho
17:12and then do the Amazon Halo
body fat measurement maybe
17:16And the end goal doesn't
need to be to be super
17:18extremely shredded, but just to stay
17:19within healthy bounds, right?
17:20We just have different genetics
17:22for what a healthy body
fat percentage is for us.
17:24So it's about finding what's
comfortable, what's easy
17:26and what feeds into a happy lifestyle.
