00:00how should viewers go about finding out
00:03if it is a good career for them because
00:06i know a lot of young people you know
00:07maybe somebody who's 18
00:09looking if they want to get a degree or
00:11a certification a lot of the time they
00:13don't really know what they like so i
00:15mean how can you know what to go into
00:17when you don't really even know yourself
00:19yet right so how would people go about
00:22figuring out if it is good for them if
00:24you don't if you're not already like a
00:26big computer nerd and you don't have
00:28like a necessarily have a real innate
00:30passion for technology it can still be
00:33like a pretty good career for you so
00:35like what i would recommend doing to
00:36kind of figure that out is i would watch
00:38like i guess finish watching this video
00:41and then maybe search out some other
00:43videos like maybe day in the life of a
00:45help desk person or if you know somebody
00:47who works in it kind of just interview
00:49them and do like your field research to
00:50try to get a general sentiment for the
00:52field and like see if
00:54those people are doing stuff that you
00:56might like doing and if if you're still
00:57kind of interested in it i would
00:59recommend um just getting like a cheap
01:01like refurbished computer from amazon or
01:03something and then just work through
01:05like comptia a plus curriculum like
01:07there's a lot of free
01:08a lot of free stuff on the internet and
01:10just kind of work through it and learn
01:11about the basic concepts of technology
01:14and like what an os is like the ram and
01:16like hard drive and all that and kind of
01:18experiment with your computer the one
01:21um don't ruin your your personal
01:23computer if you can but um i'll just
01:25kind of work through it and work through
01:26a plus and if you can get through a plus
01:28the curriculum not necessarily like
01:30passing the exam even but um just look
01:33around at different people in the field
01:35go through the a plus curriculum and if
01:36you still feel pretty good about it i'll
01:38recommend at least um maybe finish the
01:41cert and then just try working um in in
01:43a help desk job or something like this
01:45yeah and if you anywhere along the way
01:48if you after you like interview people
01:49and you're like that seems boring like i
01:51wouldn't really recommend like putting
01:54putting more effort into it because it's
01:58it's not really that fulfilling of a job
02:00but it it's all right enough to where if
02:02you feel okay going through the
02:05it's worth like giving a try anyway hey
02:07guys shane from the future really
02:09quickly i wanted to say that there are a
02:11few resources down in the description
02:13it'll be at the very top that i think
02:15are good when it comes to it one of them
02:17is going to be a certification that is
02:20very common and it's a good way to kind
02:21of dip your toe into it and see if it's
02:24the right thing for you and it can also
02:25help you to get an entry level job or
02:27maybe an internship and then the other
02:29one is a website that allows you to
02:31quickly test out of different classes at
02:33a fraction of the cost at study.com so
02:36definitely check out both of those down
02:38in the description below
02:40you know okay that's interesting that
02:42you bring up that it's not fulfilling
02:44every time i have a technical issue and
02:47i call like an i.t guy and he's you know
02:49her i.t girl and they're able to figure
02:52i am so thankful to them like and i
02:55think that they're geniuses as well so
02:57like there's been times when i've had
02:58like audio issues video issues i call up
03:01my friends or you know i call up
03:03somebody at the company and i am just
03:05extremely grateful uh to them for being
03:08able to fix that for me so i i do think
03:11it's a job that's relatively meaningful
03:13if uh maybe if you're
03:15somebody who just likes solving problems
03:17for other people um would you would you
03:20agree with that or would you disagree
03:22i can i can speak to that quite a bit
03:24actually i'm glad i'm glad you brought
03:28this is very i don't know if i can say
03:29it's ironic or not but
03:31the i really my first it job the
03:34part-time job and and help desk um that
03:36was that's probably probably my most
03:39favorite job and technology i ever had
03:41because i got to hey josh interface with
03:43people like help them with their
03:44problems and they were like so happy
03:46like like you mentioned and it's really
03:48nice because even though that that job
03:50like paid pretty low
03:52um i could get like instant results i
03:54can just like help people and then like
03:56treat them really well while i'm helping
03:58them they're happy and i get like
03:59instant results and i feel good and i
04:01was like man i to use dope i want to
04:03like keep working in i.t
04:04and like when i got my like kind of the
04:07next job i was still kind of customer
04:09facing um and it was it was nice because
04:11i could i could still kind of help
04:12people a little bit um but the kind of
04:15human interaction like went down a
04:17little bit at that point and it kind of
04:19it was okay but kind of like the more my
04:22my salary went up the more kind of uh
04:25distance from like normal humans i got i
04:28guess and the the problems like the more
04:31your salary goes up the problems that
04:33you're solving this isn't always true
04:34but the problems that you're solving are
04:36like not easy problems and
04:39it can take a long time to solve and you
04:40don't really get that like
04:42uh gratification from helping end users
04:46so it kind of depends on what you're
04:48doing like i really like working help
04:50desk i want to work help just every day
04:52but um i'm like caught in a dilemma
04:55between like the salary and like the
04:58you know how how fun the job was i guess
05:00i i rambled for a while there but i hope
05:02that kind of made sense i guess
05:04i think that's a great point because it
05:06kind of just goes back to kind of
05:07figuring yourself out and what you enjoy
05:10doing there might be some people who
05:12would uh really not like help desk and
05:15interacting with uh the public yeah and
05:18then there's you know it really just
05:19depends on your personality so um that's
05:22that's a great point yeah for sure i
05:23forgot about that i'm glad you i'm glad
05:25you brought that up actually
05:27i'm trying to extract that value i'm
05:29trying to extract that value out
05:31okay so next is gonna be the yes or no
05:37um if possible we want to keep it like
05:39under a sentence or you know one word
05:41answers are going to be good here but uh
05:44yes or no do grades matter in college
05:47when it comes to i.t uh i wouldn't say
05:49so no one's ever asked me about my
05:51grades and i i don't put my gpa on my
05:54yes or no was it worth your time to join
05:57clubs when you were in college or maybe
05:59when you were getting your
06:00certifications i've never joined a club
06:03so i i would say it's worth it if you
06:05can but it's definitely not necessary to
06:07to get a job how about leadership
06:09positions so if you join a club and you
06:11get a leadership position would that be
06:13something that's worth it it's
06:14definitely helpful um definitely worth
06:18so i'd say yes but don't worry if you
06:20can't do that it's not really required
06:22but but yes i guess and then internships
06:24how are internships looked at in the
06:26high t field um i would say yes it's
06:29worth it if you can get one
06:31definitely go for it um but you can
06:33always substitute it with something else
06:35like creating your own experience or
06:37anything like this and speaking of
06:39experience how about work experience
06:41does that matter it does it's really
06:45uh getting the interview like the
06:46getting the interview portion that's
06:49again if you if you don't have any like
06:51you can't get an internship or something
06:52you can always kind of
06:54create your own and stick it on your
06:56resume and then i think we already went
06:58over this a little bit but is networking
07:00important yes yes it is it's the single
07:03most powerful thing that you can use to
07:05get a job but uh you don't need it it's
07:07very good so yes but you don't
07:10necessarily need to do it and then how
07:12about skills how important are skills i
07:16would say skill is paramount so that
07:18will help you there's the getting the
07:20interview and then passing the interview
07:22the skills will actually get you a job
07:25so it's very important to develop some
07:27kind of basic skills if you're trying to
07:29get into i.t and then how about the
07:31school you go to is it that important to
07:34go to like an elite level school or you
07:36know can you go to community college and
07:38then just go to a state school how
07:40important is the school that you go to
07:42the school is it's not important i would
07:44say um you might even be able to go to
07:47like something that's not accredited
07:49just for it like people because people
07:51don't really look at it
07:53um so it's i wouldn't say the school is
07:55that important they'll probably just be
07:57like oh bachelor's okay okay and then
08:00yeah so it's not it's not that important
08:02and then this this is a tough one i'm
08:04gonna have to read this uh sorry uh this
08:06is probably tough to do but can you rank
08:09from most to least important grades
08:12clubs leadership positions internships
08:14uh work experience networking skills uh
08:18projects and the school you go to
08:20yeah that's a tough one sorry
08:22no it's cool i'll have to read from my
08:24list a little bit i kind of wrote them
08:26down in order so i'll just
08:28i'll do my best here um so the most most
08:31important is skill because that's what
08:33everything is about like you you just
08:35can't work if you don't have skill and
08:37you can't pass your interview if you
08:40next important thing i kind of grouped
08:42into one kind of uh i guess group like
08:45internships work experience and projects
08:46i kind of put those all under the
08:49umbrella of experience
08:51these things are really important they
08:52help you in both phases like getting the
08:54interview and and passing the interview
08:56it's pretty important um iris i i wrote
08:59certification in here as that i don't
09:02think you oh you didn't give that as an
09:06i wrote certification like after uh
09:08internships just because it helps you um
09:10it'll help you get the interview
09:12especially for your first it job it's
09:17you're networking um
09:20i wrote networking after networking is
09:22like it's really strong but
09:25it's not something that you need to
09:27succeed in it like i've i've never done
09:30networking before so i ranked it pretty
09:32low and i know a lot of people don't
09:34like to do networking i'm really
09:36introverted so i'm not i'm not trying to
09:37go out just for the sake of like meeting
09:39people and like trying to
09:41build connections that's a real thing
09:43and i should do that i guess but i just
09:45don't so i ranked networking pretty low
09:48and then grades um grades in school is
09:50about the same uh it's just not really
09:52important i've never talked about my my
09:55grades to anyone and no one has ever
09:56asked me about my school and like an
09:58interview setting like oh i see you've
10:00gone to wgu here like tell me about that
10:02that's like never happened to me
