00:00is a neuroscience major or neuroscience
00:03that's what we're going to be talking
00:04about today but before we get into that
00:06make sure to gently tap the like button
00:07in order to defeat the evil youtube
00:09algorithm on this channel i talk about
00:11personal finance college degrees careers
00:13and opportunities that will lead you to
00:14success and i also go over some of the
00:16common financial traps that
00:18so many people fall for if that sounds
00:20like something that interests you and
00:21you haven't done it already then go
00:22ahead and hit that subscribe button and
00:24ring the notification bell so that you
00:25never miss out so first of all let's
00:27talk about neuroscience and exactly what
00:30so neuroscience is going to be studying
00:31all kinds of different things that are
00:32related to the brain so we're talking
00:35chemistry as well as biology all of
00:38those things that are related to the
00:39brain now this is a relatively rare
00:42only about 5700 people graduate with a
00:44bachelor's every year so we're going to
00:46go ahead and evaluate this degree and
00:48then i'm going to rank it in a bunch of
00:50areas first we're going to talk about
00:52salary so according to pay scale with a
00:55neuroscience degree you're going to make
00:57seven thousand starting out and eighty
00:59thousand dollars in mid-career pay
01:01now there are a number of different
01:02career paths that you can go down with a
01:05one interesting one you could do is you
01:06could learn about machine learning which
01:08is basically people trying to replicate
01:11using coding as well as hardware you
01:13could also go to medical school and
01:15become a neurosurgeon
01:16you could go down the researcher route
01:18and become a scientist
01:19so let's say you wanted to become a
01:21medical scientist they make around 88
01:23000 a year however you usually will have
01:26to get a doctoral level degree in order
01:28to become a scientist
01:29and that's kind of the problem that you
01:31see with a lot of these different types
01:32of career paths you could potentially go
01:34down for instance if you wanted to
01:35become a neurosurgeon sure they're gonna
01:37make a lot of money probably over four
01:38hundred thousand dollars
01:40a year but you're also probably going to
01:42have to go through about 15 years of
01:43schooling and training the truth is it's
01:45not a very obvious progression from
01:48getting a bachelor's degree in
01:50and finding a job with just a bachelor
01:52level degree many of the jobs
01:54out there will require you to have at
01:55the very least a master's level degree
01:57and sometimes even higher so you might
01:59end up getting a neuroscience degree
02:01which is great and all but then you end
02:03up working in something that's
02:04completely unrelated to neuroscience so
02:06it's very important that you make sure
02:08to do your research and know exactly
02:10what you're getting yourself into
02:11and exactly what career path you're
02:13trying to go down overall when it comes
02:15to pay i'm gonna go ahead and put this
02:17one at about 7 out of 10.
02:19next on the list we're going to be
02:20talking about satisfaction so when it
02:22comes to satisfaction i like to look at
02:24two different things the first one is
02:26meaning and meaning is basically how
02:28much you think your degree
02:30positively impacts the world so for
02:32instance if you are someone who gets to
02:34professionally eat food for instance
02:36you're like a professional food taster
02:38that might have a really high job
02:41but it might not have nearly as high of
02:44and according to pay scale people who
02:46graduate with a neuroscience degree
02:47report about a 59 meaning score meaning
02:5059 of them think that their career
02:53significantly positively impacts the
02:55world now also according to pay scale if
02:57you became a medical scientist that
03:0083 meaning score that's much higher than
03:03average and you do tend to see that with
03:05the science-related degrees
03:06people who get science-related degrees
03:08and they end up working in science you
03:10as a you know medical scientists for
03:12instance do tend to have very high
03:14the job satisfaction score for that
03:18which is also higher than average so if
03:20you are able to find a job as a
03:22after graduating with a neuroscience
03:24degree you'll probably be very happy
03:27overall i'm going to go ahead and give
03:28the satisfaction section a 7.5 out of
03:3110. i think the key word here is
03:32if you're able to find a job because a
03:35lot of people unfortunately graduating
03:36with a neuroscience degree will not be
03:38able to find a job with just a
03:40bachelor's in the science field that's
03:42next we're going to be talking about
03:44demand now going back to the medical
03:46scientist job there's about 138
03:48000 jobs available right now and it's
03:50growing at six percent which is faster
03:52than average now if you look at science
03:54related jobs in general they do have
03:55decent growth it's not going to be
03:57amazing like health or technology is
03:59but it's pretty decent however what
04:01you're going to notice is a lot of the
04:02careers require either a master's or a
04:05doctorate and usually the advice that i
04:07give on this channel just because of the
04:08fact that there's so much cost
04:10associated with getting a master's or a
04:12is you want to secure the bag with your
04:14bachelor's degree and what i mean by
04:16this is after graduating after spending
04:18about four years to get your bachelor's
04:20you want to be able to get a job if you
04:23want to you have the
04:24option of going back to school and
04:26getting a master's or a doctorate but
04:28you don't want to be in a situation
04:29where you absolutely have to
04:31and so if you know exactly what you want
04:33to do and you know that you need to get
04:34a neuroscience degree in order to get
04:37and you know that you're probably going
04:38to have to get a masters or a doctorate
04:40then this can be a really good choice
04:42but when it comes to just
04:43bachelor's degrees i have to be fair
04:45here and rank this one extremely low for
04:47this section i'm going to have to give
04:49a 5.5 out of 10. again i know this is
04:53and it's true it's very subjective if
04:54you know exactly what career path you're
04:57then it might not matter now let's go
04:59ahead and discuss the x factors of
05:00getting a neuroscience degree
05:02x factors range anywhere from how well
05:04respected the degree is
05:06how easily automated it is and all kinds
05:08of other different factors now when it
05:09comes to ex factors i would say it's not
05:11a very flexible degree
05:13it's not going to be like a business
05:14degree where let's say you choose to go
05:16down one career path and then five years
05:18in you decide you don't want to do that
05:20it's very easy for you to switch
05:22redirect and go down a different career
05:24path with a neuroscience degree the set
05:26of skills that you're learning
05:28are extremely niche and they're pretty
05:29much only going to be good for the most
05:32if you go down certain career paths so
05:34unfortunately you do risk pigeonholing
05:36yourself into only certain
05:38careers with that being said i will say
05:40that neuroscience degrees in general are
05:42going to be relatively well respected
05:44this means that if you're applying for
05:46just kind of a general job that doesn't
05:47necessarily have anything to do with
05:49people will be kind of impressed with a
05:53a lot of companies have the hiring
05:54philosophy that they just want to hire
05:56the smartest possible people and they
05:58don't really care what degree they get
05:59or what kind of background they have
06:01they're going to take their chances on
06:02the brain power and then train them
06:05now when you look at the degree earnings
06:06of all different types of degrees and
06:08all different types of careers
06:09throughout a lifetime
06:10you will see that neuroscience which
06:12falls under biological science
06:14is going to be below average the average
06:16person who graduates with a degree will
06:18earn around 2.4 million dollars
06:20throughout a lifetime whereas someone
06:21who graduates with a biological science
06:23degree will earn around 2.3 million so
06:26average however it will vary quite a bit
06:29depending on what career path you go
06:31so for instance if you end up working in
06:33management you would make around 2.9
06:34million in a lifetime and if you end up
06:36working with computers you might make
06:38around 3 million in a lifetime but with
06:41is a lot lower than you would like to
06:42see across the board if you knew exactly
06:45what you wanted to do
06:46and let's say i'm just going to make
06:47this up off the top of my head let's say
06:49you wanted to become a machine learning
06:51what you could do is you could double
06:53major in neuroscience and something like
06:55computer science for instance
06:56learn both of those skills and that
06:58would prepare you extremely well for
07:00becoming a machine learning expert so if
07:02you know exactly what you want to do and
07:04you know exactly what steps you need to
07:05take in order to get there then this can
07:08but if you don't plan it out or you do
07:10plan it out but you make a mistake
07:12unfortunately there's not a lot of
07:13wiggle room here you will likely have to
07:16grad school in order to get a good job
07:18and i've talked a lot about grad school
07:19on this channel how it
07:20takes a long time and it's also
07:22extremely expensive so overall for x
07:24factors i'm going to give this one a 6
07:27so when it comes to pros and cons some
07:29of the pros here are
07:30if you do end up getting a job in
07:32science and you're someone who really
07:35they do tend to be pretty happy and
07:37satisfied with their careers
07:38another pro is that if you know exactly
07:40what you want to do let's say you want
07:42to become a brain surgeon
07:44then this can be really good for you
07:45because being a neuroscientist would be
07:47a great prerequisite to becoming a brain
07:50another pro is that i think it's
07:52generally speaking a relatively well
07:55and by that i mean if you reply to just
07:57kind of a random business job with this
07:59something that you know companies need
08:01they might respect the fact that this is
08:03a more difficult degree
08:04and you're probably smart and so they
08:06might want to hire you for that reason
08:08cons here are that it's not very
08:09flexible the skills that you learn in
08:11neuroscience are not going to be as easy
08:13to translate into other areas or other
08:16careers a second con here is that it's
08:19going to be very difficult for you to
08:20get a job with just a bachelor level
08:23and the third thing is the jobs that are
08:25available with just a bachelor's level
08:26degree are probably not going to pay
08:29so the overall score here is going to be
08:33i think this is one of those degrees
08:34where it's not horrible you know if you
08:36have a really good plan going in if you
08:38know exactly what you're doing this can
08:40it also can pair really well with other
08:42types of degrees depending on what
08:44career path you're going to go down
08:45i would advise if you're looking at this
08:46degree to make sure that you
08:48thoroughly research it really spend
08:50quite a bit of time researching it and i
08:52would honestly say you might want to
08:54contact people that are in the career
08:56path that you're considering and talk to
08:59if they would advise you getting a
09:00neuroscience degree this is all
09:02extremely subjective and it's going to
09:04be different depending on who we're
09:05talking about what your interests are
09:07and all kinds of other
09:08things but if you are interested in
09:09looking at my personal rankings of all
09:11the different types of degrees
09:13i do have that down in the description
09:16i update the college degree ranker as
09:18much as i can whenever i find some data
09:20that i think would fit into the ranker i
09:22put it in there if you haven't done it
09:23already go ahead and gently tap the like
09:25button in order to defeat the evil
09:27hit the subscribe button ring the
09:29notification bell so that you never miss
09:31and comment down below any thoughts
09:32comments criticisms etc that you have on
09:34the video and before you
09:36go make sure to check out my other
09:37videos right here i made them just for
