00:00is an architecture major or architecture
00:02degree worth it that's what we're going
00:04to be talking about today but before we
00:05jump into that make sure to gently tap
00:07the like button in order to defeat the
00:08evil youtube algorithm on this channel
00:10we talk about personal finance college
00:12degrees careers and opportunities that
00:14are going to lead you to success and we
00:15also go over how you can avoid some of
00:17the common traps that so many people end
00:19up falling for if that sounds like
00:21something that interests you and you're
00:22new here and you haven't done it already
00:23go ahead and hit that subscribe button
00:25and ring the notification bell so that
00:27you never miss out so first of all what
00:29the heck is architecture architecture is
00:31the science and art of designing and
00:34engineering large structures and
00:36buildings so an architecture degree is a
00:38really cool combination of kind of hard
00:40skills you know you're going to have to
00:41have some math skills but you also have
00:43to have some artistic talent as well
00:46around 8 500 people graduate with an
00:48architecture bachelor degree every year
00:51and there's something magical and
00:52amazing about imagining a structure in
00:54your head putting it down on paper and
00:56then eventually having it become a
00:58reality building it out in real life
01:00architecture is something that's going
01:02to be interesting not just to people who
01:03end up going into the profession but to
01:05other people you know random people that
01:07you meet at dinner they probably will
01:08like to ask you about your profession as
01:10well now as always i'm gonna break this
01:12down into four different categories that
01:14i think are extremely important when it
01:16comes to evaluating college degrees the
01:18first one is going to be salary now
01:20graduating with an architecture degree
01:22you can expect to make around 48 000 a
01:25year starting out and mid-career pay is
01:27going to be 87 000. however there are
01:29other types of architecture such as
01:31interior architecture and landscape
01:33architecture and the pay is going to be
01:35different for those now if you get the
01:36degree and you end up becoming an
01:37architect you can expect to make around
01:3980 000 a year however this is going to
01:41vary greatly depending on whether you're
01:43working in the public sector private
01:45sector working for a big firm or whether
01:47you have your own business you're an
01:48independent contractor it is very
01:50competitive though and you saw on that
01:52last slide with bls that it's only
01:54growing about one percent which is much
01:56slower than average many architecture
01:58positions are also going to require some
02:00type of internship so if you are able to
02:02get a job the salary is pretty good
02:04overall i'm going to go ahead and give
02:06this one a 7 out of 10 for salary next
02:08on the list we're going to be talking
02:10about satisfaction and i always like to
02:12break this down into two really
02:13important categories which is meaning
02:16and then job satisfaction now meaning is
02:18basically how much your career your job
02:21positively impacts the rest of the world
02:24whereas job satisfaction is just how
02:26much do you enjoy doing your job so
02:27let's say you were employed to just
02:29watch netflix all day long and you were
02:31a netflix critic you might really enjoy
02:34doing your job it's something that you
02:35would really enjoy doing because hey who
02:37doesn't want to watch some netflix
02:38however you might find especially a few
02:40years in that your job doesn't have very
02:42much meaning whereas let's say you're a
02:44plumber and you're kind of just doing
02:45the same things over and over again you
02:47know you're fixing pipes it might not be
02:49the most glamorous job but you are
02:52helping people because people truly do
02:54need plumbers so that career might have
02:56a high meaning score but it might not
02:58have as high of a job satisfaction score
03:00now according to pay scale with an
03:01architecture degree you're going to have
03:03around a 55 meaning score and by that i
03:06mean 55 percent of people think that
03:08their degree and the job that that led
03:10to significantly positively impacts the
03:13world when it comes to meaning that is
03:15going to be a little bit above average
03:16when you compare it to other types of
03:18degrees now when you look at job
03:20satisfaction there are several different
03:22types of architects that you can become
03:23but let's say you decide to become a
03:25landscape architect about 73 percent of
03:28landscape architects said that they were
03:30extremely satisfied with their job that
03:32is also going to be higher than average
03:35and you could probably imagine why
03:36becoming an architect is pretty awesome
03:39you get to use those hard skills that
03:40not very many people have and then you
03:42also get to use your own artistic
03:44ability to create buildings that maybe
03:46no one's ever even seen before people
03:48generally tend to think architects are
03:49cool if you mention that you're an
03:51architect around a dinner table a bunch
03:53of people are going to start asking you
03:54questions and so if you are able to get
03:56a job as an architect after getting an
03:58architecture degree then you're probably
04:00going to be pretty satisfied with it so
04:02for that reason i'm going to say the
04:03satisfaction score if you are able to
04:06get a job is going to be around 8 out of
04:0810 so it's going to be pretty high
04:10however that's a big if and i'm going to
04:12talk about that in the next section
04:14which is demand so remember when i
04:16talked about becoming an architect and
04:18how it's only growing at about one
04:19percent per year that means there's only
04:21going to be around 1100 jobs that open
04:23up in the next 10 years i also mentioned
04:26there's around 8 500 people who graduate
04:28with an architecture degree every year
04:30so there's a little bit of a number
04:31discrepancy there there's not that many
04:33jobs opening up and there's a lot of
04:35people graduating now of course there's
04:36also going to be a lot of people
04:38retiring so hopefully that frees up some
04:40of the jobs but it's still obvious to
04:41see that this is not one of those
04:43industries where there's just tons of
04:44jobs left and right so it will likely be
04:46very difficult for you to get your first
04:48job right out of school and so it's
04:50going to be extremely important for you
04:51to network and make sure you do
04:53internships and on top of that an
04:55architecture degree isn't going to be as
04:57flexible as say a business degree for
04:59instance so with a business degree let's
05:01say you planned on being a marketer for
05:03instance so you got a marketing degree
05:04and then you decided hey i don't really
05:06want to be a marketer it would be very
05:08easy for you to switch careers and go
05:10into something else business degrees are
05:12extremely flexible and they have a lot
05:13of options for you just because of the
05:15fact that every company out there every
05:17industry out there is hiring people who
05:19graduate with business degrees an
05:21architecture degree on the other hand is
05:22not going to be nearly as flexible so
05:24the skill set that you learn with an
05:26architecture degree is going to be
05:27extremely valuable however it is pretty
05:29specific and specialized and it might be
05:32a little bit difficult for companies to
05:34see how you're going to use that skill
05:35set in other roles however with that
05:37being said i do think there's one saving
05:40grace when it comes to getting an
05:41architecture degree and that is that
05:43it's highly respected so there are
05:45certain degrees out there like
05:46engineering for instance where even if
05:48you don't become an engineer it's still
05:50very easy for you to get a job in other
05:52areas so for instance you might get an
05:54engineering degree and then you end up
05:55becoming a software developer a lot of
05:57companies out there have the philosophy
05:59that they're just going to hire the
06:00smartest possible people and then they
06:02can train them how to do the job later
06:04on architecture also falls under this
06:06category where a lot of companies out
06:08there are looking for people who
06:09graduate with architecture degrees for
06:11instance if you search the keyword
06:12monster.com for architecture degree
06:14there's about 43 000 listings that have
06:17that as a keyword now as a comparison
06:19computer science degree is a very
06:21popular one lots of people are looking
06:23for people who graduate with computer
06:24science degrees and that has 141 000 job
06:27listings and an anthropology degree on
06:29the other hand is going to have around
06:31829 job listings because that's not
06:34generally a degree that a lot of people
06:35are looking for so with that being said
06:37the demand here is going to be lower
06:39than average but it's still not the
06:40worst overall i'm going to give the
06:42demand a 6 out of 10. next on the list
06:45we're going to be talking about x
06:46factors and x factors could be anything
06:49from flexibility to how easily automated
06:52is the career we also talk a lot about
06:54the skills that you learn in the career
06:56and how valuable those skills are on the
06:58market so ziprecruiter has a skill index
07:00that basically says how valuable
07:02different types of skills are and
07:04according to this index service oriented
07:06architecture has a skill index score of
07:08about 59 an architecture design has a
07:11skill index score of about 39. this is
07:13kind of average maybe slightly below
07:16average and this doesn't necessarily
07:18mean that these skills aren't valuable
07:19it's just how much are they valued on
07:21the market how much are different
07:23businesses willing to pay people who
07:25have these skills with that being said
07:27according to a study by thetab.com
07:29architecture did actually rank as the
07:31most difficult degree that you can get
07:33and that probably explains why it's so
07:35well respected business owners know that
07:37if you can get an architecture degree
07:39which is definitely one of the harder
07:40degrees it might not be the hardest but
07:42it's definitely one of the hardest
07:43degrees then you could probably do a
07:45really good job for them but this also
07:46means that it's going to be one of the
07:48most difficult degrees so you might want
07:50to keep that in mind just because of the
07:51fact that the average 18 year old might
07:53not be ready for the curriculum i
07:55remember when i went to college if
07:56architecture is anything like
07:58engineering those guys were studying
08:00like 24 7. whereas the business majors
08:02were having a lot of fun the engineering
08:04students were basically studying all the
08:07willrobotstakemyjob.com there's about a
08:091.8 chance that architecture will be
08:11automated and i tend to agree with that
08:13there's no way architecture is going to
08:15be automated that combination of
08:17artistic skill and then also the hard
08:19skills when it comes to math and
08:21designing stuff and all that there's
08:22just no way that you're ever going to be
08:24able to automate that it would also be
08:25very difficult for you to outsource it
08:28and send it to another country just
08:29because of the fact that you do have to
08:31have a lot of communication with other
08:32people that are going to be working on
08:34the project but overall i think the
08:35issue with this one and where it really
08:37suffers is because of the fact that it's
08:39just not very flexible most people are
08:41going to go to architecture school and
08:42get an architecture degree because they
08:44want to be architects the problem is
08:46there's just not that many jobs out
08:48there for architects and this isn't one
08:49of these degrees that's extremely
08:51flexible where you can just easily
08:52switch careers yes sure absolutely it's
08:55possible for you to switch careers and
08:56do something else but it's not going to
08:58be as easy as say a business degree it's
09:00also one of those careers that depends
09:02heavily on how the economy is doing so
09:04if the economy is going really well
09:06they're probably going to be designing
09:08and building a bunch of new buildings
09:09and if it's not going very well they're
09:11probably going to be scrapping all those
09:13projects overall if you plan it out if
09:15you've really done your due diligence
09:16when it comes to planning making sure
09:19you know exactly what you're going for
09:20and then figuring out reverse
09:22engineering the steps that you need to
09:23take in order to get there then this can
09:25be really good but i'm going to have to
09:26say here that if you make a mistake this
09:28one has an x factor score of 5.5 out of
09:3110. so when it comes to the pros and
09:33cons of studying architecture some of
09:35the pros are going to be that it's
09:37somewhat artistic now there's different
09:38programs some of them are going to offer
09:40a ba which is more of an artistic
09:42related degree and then some of them are
09:43going to offer a bs which is more of a
09:45science related degree but overall it is
09:47going to be somewhat artistic no matter
09:49which one you go for and people who
09:51become architects tend to really enjoy
09:53their job so that's another pro here and
09:55on top of that architecture degrees and
09:57architects in general are going to be
09:59pretty well respected some of the cons
10:01here are going to be that it's going to
10:02have low job growth and the growth is
10:04going to depend quite a bit on how good
10:06the economy is the second thing here is
10:08the process of becoming an architect can
10:09be extremely competitive long and
10:12expensive some people end up going back
10:13to grad school in order to get a
10:15master's degree or a doctorate there's a
10:17lot of tests and certifications that you
10:19have to get many people end up doing
10:21internships as well before they get
10:23hired for a full-time job and then
10:25another con is that it's one of the most
10:26difficult majors although this could be
10:28seen as a positive as well overall i'm
10:31going to give this one a score of
10:336.625 out of 10. it can be a great
10:36degree if you've really planned things
10:38out you know exactly what you're getting
10:39yourself into however if you don't plan
10:42things out or things don't go exactly
10:44the way that you thought they were going
10:45to this one can be a big trap now of
10:47course this is going to be completely
10:49subjective you know getting a degree for
10:51one person might be a 10 out of 10 score
10:53and then getting this degree for another
10:54person might be one out of 10. i always
10:56encourage you guys to do your own
10:58research when it comes to these videos
