00:00all right liberal arts no no no
00:05all right liberal arts humanities social
00:07science degrees have a little bit of a
00:10now i've talked about them in other
00:11videos before some of them are okay and
00:13if you have a good plan going in you can
00:15make them work for you
00:17sometimes there are also some of the
00:18most interesting subjects as well so i
00:20can see why so many people like them but
00:22the truth is from a personal finance
00:25many many liberal arts degrees are
00:28useless but don't start crying yet
00:30whenever i point this out people get
00:32triggered they dislike my video
00:34thousands of times they leave hundreds
00:36but the truth is with many of these
00:38degrees they're so bad
00:40that you will actually be less likely to
00:43once you've gotten the degree because of
00:45the fact that you're in so much student
00:47and because of the fact that you wasted
00:49four years of your life you would have
00:50been better off if you just didn't go to
00:52college at all and then you tried to
00:53pursue it in a different way like
00:54starting a youtube channel or a blog or
00:57a podcast or something like that but in
00:59this video i'm gonna talk about
01:00liberal arts degrees that are so bad
01:03that i don't believe that you'll be able
01:04to get through this video without
01:07yeah cringing hard and one cringe equals
01:10don't forget to smash the like button
01:12here we go now starting out
01:14number 10 on the list is going to be
01:16history now in all fairness this one
01:18ranks 412 out of 835 possible degrees
01:22and it's probably my favorite subject
01:25one of my biggest passions in the entire
01:27world i absolutely love
01:29history and it looks like a lot of other
01:31people have the same passion as well
01:32there's over 35 000 people
01:34every single year that graduate with a
01:36history degree and that's just here in
01:39now the reason i decided to not major in
01:41this one and instead just keep it as a
01:42hobby and maybe take a few extra classes
01:45is because the numbers just weren't very
01:47good in terms of getting a job
01:48and making a stable income there's not
01:50that many jobs out there and the few
01:52that are don't pay very well
01:54now ironically i decided to go a
01:55completely different route and i get to
01:57as much time as i want listening to the
02:01watching different youtube history
02:03channels here you know looking at the
02:05badass of the week blog
02:06and i don't have to do any of the boring
02:08stuff like memorizing dates or writing
02:10essays about parts of history that i'm
02:12just not interested in i had a roommate
02:14back in college who got a history degree
02:16and ironically i spend more time
02:18studying and enjoying history than he
02:20now so this is a great example of an
02:22overrated degree and i'm so glad that 17
02:24year old shane was smart enough to see
02:26he was a dumbass in many ways but i do
02:28have to give him credit there
02:30number nine on the list i decided to
02:31group these together it's going to be
02:32anthropology and archaeology now i'm not
02:34going to go over the numbers on these
02:36really bad archaeology is a little bit
02:38worse so i'll just tell you the rankings
02:40instead it's going to be 592 for
02:42anthropology and 651 for archaeology
02:46and by the way looking up the numbers on
02:47all of these different degrees they're
02:49in the first place but they're actually
02:51worse than what's shown on a lot of the
02:53because of the fact that those are
02:55people who actually report their income
02:57many people who get liberal arts and
02:58arts degrees end up jobless and so they
03:00don't have any income to report
03:02that makes the numbers even worse and
03:04out of all those people how many of them
03:06are working as an archaeologist or an
03:08pretty much none and that's a fact
03:11number eight on the list is going to be
03:12communications and this is one of the
03:14most overrated degrees out there
03:16this one ranks 438 out of 835 possible
03:20degrees on pay scale
03:21now there's 37 different types of
03:23communication related degrees out there
03:25and 88 000 people graduate with these
03:28different types of degrees
03:29every single year it's one of the most
03:31popular degrees this is the major that
03:33football players and basketball players
03:35just because it has the reputation of
03:37being really easy but your communication
03:39sucks and your videos shame
03:42number seven on the list is going to be
03:44recreation and leisure
03:45studies now guys the hardest part about
03:47making videos like this is choosing
03:49which ones to put in here because
03:51so many degrees i found that were just
03:53awful recreation and leisure studies
03:56this is where you study how to be a
03:57parks and recreation employee i guess
04:00and i'm going to tell you everything you
04:01need to know about the miserable screwed
04:03up world of local government like i try
04:05to go through the thought process when
04:07i'm making these videos of people who
04:08major in these degrees to try to figure
04:10out like where they're coming from and
04:12it's like i like recreation i like
04:16let's spend eighty thousand dollars for
04:18someone to teach me how to have fun
04:20this one it's uh it's it's just
04:23it's just painful i remember when i was
04:25responding to some comments and i tried
04:26to respond to every single comment you
04:28and someone posted a story about their
04:30aunt they said that their aunt majored
04:32and she's making really good money and
04:34she's happy with her job and i talked to
04:36this guy because i was interested i
04:37wanted to hear his side of the story and
04:38he admitted that this is the exception
04:41and his aunt probably got really really
04:43lucky you have to realize that
04:44exceptions to the rule
04:45actually prove the rule itself people
04:48love to focus on exceptions and they all
04:50think that it's going to turn out well
04:52and i know i sound like a boomer here
04:53telling you to not get these
04:56but seriously if you want to make a
04:57living from studying stuff like this
04:59just start a youtube channel start a
05:03there's no need for you to spend four
05:04years of your life and tens of thousands
05:07to have someone teach you how to netflix
05:08and chill number six on the list is
05:11early childhood education you hear that
05:15the cairns are coming to cancel me so i
05:17felt bad about ranking this one low i
05:19mean technically it's the second worst
05:22it ranks 831 out of 835 possible degrees
05:27that's really really bad now i said i
05:30wasn't going to show the numbers but
05:31just to give you guys some perspective
05:33they start off around 33 500 a year
05:36in the first five years and then
05:37mid-career pay is going to be 43
05:39000 a year now these numbers might be a
05:41little bit over inflated because again
05:43this is survey data this is the people
05:45respond and many of the people who
05:47respond do have jobs but there's
05:48probably a lot of them that don't so
05:50that's going to skew the data a little
05:52probably a little higher than it
05:53actually is in reality but bls
05:55on the other hand says that preschool
05:57teachers in general make around 30 000
05:59a year and you don't even need a
06:01bachelor's degree to get into this all
06:03you need is an associates now bls also
06:06average salary of all workers in the us
06:08this is people with or without degrees
06:10is around 50 000 a year so there is a
06:12significant amount of people getting a
06:16going 40 000 in debt on average in order
06:19to earn only thirty thousand dollars a
06:21year when you don't even need to have a
06:22bachelor's to get into that job in the
06:25now i always recommend on this channel
06:27that you try to go for a job where you
06:28can realistically expect to make around
06:30seventy five thousand dollars a year
06:32and the reason for this is because
06:34studies have shown that your happiness
06:35increases up to 75 000 a year and then
06:39it doesn't really increase
06:40after that so up to a certain point it
06:42absolutely does increase your happiness
06:44but beyond that point it kind of gets
06:45saturated and it doesn't really matter
06:48so in my opinion you should try to go
06:51a year in order to maximize your
06:53happiness now that's all i'm going to
06:54say about that but the next one is going
06:56to be a different type of education
06:58which is history teacher education now
07:01education degrees on their own don't pay
07:03very well education on its own ranks 691
07:06out of 835 possible degrees
07:09when you get a degree like education
07:11it's already specific enough i mean you
07:13pretty much know what kind of career
07:14you're going to go into you're probably
07:16going to become a teacher so there's no
07:18need for you to get any more specific
07:20however they offer a ton of degrees that
07:23are extremely tailored to certain types
07:26this is one example history teacher
07:27education it ranks 807
07:30out of 835 possible degrees now i don't
07:32necessarily agree with this i think they
07:34probably should be paying teachers much
07:36better than they are
07:37they're teaching people who are going to
07:38be the future of our country and they
07:40should probably be well compensated for
07:42that but when i see people getting
07:43degrees like this where it's like a
07:45history teacher education i'm not
07:47surprised at all that it ranks so low
07:49and this whole list could honestly have
07:50been made up of degrees just like this i
07:52mean check these out
07:53all of these specific education degrees
07:55rank extremely low in the 700s and the
07:58and this is why you see education being
08:00the third most regretted degree in
08:04the reasons cited being basically
08:06everything low pay low job satisfaction
08:08and not very many opportunities for
08:10advancement so unfortunately i think
08:11that you should avoid education but if
08:13you are going to go into education don't
08:16number four on the list is going to be
08:18ministry all right so this is a fun one
08:20i could have put a bunch of different
08:21religious related degrees on there but i
08:23decided to go with this one
08:24now i want to make one thing very clear
08:26i don't have a problem with
08:28anyone's religion here's the point i'm
08:30trying to make these
08:31thirsty colleges will take anything at
08:34that you are passionate about and
08:36religion is one of the you know biggest
08:38most important things in people's lives
08:40and then they'll make it into a degree
08:41by slapping a studies on it or a
08:44education or something along those lines
08:46oh you're passionate about having fun
08:48you should do a recreation and leisure
08:49studies degree oh you like music
08:52you should do a music degree do you
08:53enjoy baking and making desserts oh you
08:55should do a baking and pastry art degree
08:57now religion just happens to be a really
08:59good example of that
09:01for a lot of people religion is the most
09:02important thing in their life and
09:04there's nothing wrong with that i
09:05respect that you can spend as much time
09:07as you want reading it or studying it
09:09if you want to go to church or you know
09:11different types of worship as
09:12seven days a week then you should do
09:14that that's great but when it comes to
09:15investing four years of your life and
09:17going forty thousand dollars in debt on
09:18average you gotta make a better choice
09:21because the numbers just don't make
09:23now people in the comments section have
09:25pointed out hey look at those television
09:27preachers they're making
09:28millions and millions of dollars a year
09:30and believe it or not there's one
09:31preacher who's worth over
09:37five minutes later okay it finally
09:42and believe it or not there's one
09:43preacher who's worth over 700 million
09:46and i guess that's where the donation to
09:48all these televangelists are going
09:50but uh that's none of my business now of
09:51course kenneth copeland did not get a
09:53religious studies degree himself
09:55but what he did do is he opened a school
09:58him money for you to get a degree i mean
10:00you can't even make this stuff up guys i
10:02looked up like most of the top
10:04televangelists you know the tv preachers
10:07none of them have a religious studies
10:10osteen nope creflo dollar nope how about
10:13our lady preachers like joyce meyer
10:16a lot of these preachers that i looked
10:17up didn't even go to college at all and
10:19they're making millions of dollars a
10:21i think you guys see the point here if
10:22you're passionate about religion and all
10:24that sort of thing i have respect for
10:26you don't need to go to college in order
10:28to make a living from it
10:29number three on the list is going to be
10:31legal assistant studies
10:33this one ranks 805 out of 835 on the
10:36list and this is another example of a
10:39unnecessary degree according to bls to
10:42become a legal assistant you need to get
10:43either an associate's degree
10:45or some sort of certificate and this is
10:47all so easy to look up it takes about 30
10:50there's no reason to get a bachelor's
10:52degree in order to get into this line of
10:54work but i guess people think that their
10:55stock will go up if they study it in a
10:57formal setting they'll be more likely to
11:00there's a lot of degrees out there like
11:01this another one is the criminal justice
11:04people watch csi criminal minds all
11:06kinds of stuff like that on tv and it
11:07gets them really excited
11:09to go get a criminal justice degree they
11:11think getting this degree will help them
11:14but in reality most police officers
11:16almost all the positions you do not need
11:18to get a criminal justice degree for
11:20in fact in many positions you don't need
11:22to get any college degree at all
11:24that's why it's so important for you to
11:26do your research before you commit so
11:29to going to college number two on the
11:32outdoor education now i was confused by
11:35what this degree even is
11:36so i had to look it up so what is the
11:38purpose of an outdoor education degree
11:41use of the outdoors makes a major
11:43contribution to physical and
11:44environmental education and enhances
11:46many other curriculum areas
11:48it contributes to personal growth and
11:50social awareness and develops skills for
11:52life in a world of work
11:54qualities such as a sense of
11:55responsibility and a purpose in life are
11:58okay so that's a great example of saying
12:00absolutely nothing by saying a lot so
12:02you're telling me that i should spend
12:04four years of my life
12:05and go 40 000 in debt in order to learn
12:08how to have a sense of responsibility
12:10and how is the outdoors gonna do that to
12:12me i just i don't get it
12:14you should learn to have a sense of
12:15responsibility no matter what direction
12:17that you go in your life you don't need
12:18to go to college in order to learn that
12:20this degree makes no sense whatsoever
12:22imagine a boss or a hiring manager sees
12:26what do you think that they're going to
12:28think how is this degree going to help
12:30them to grow their business or you know
12:32improve the company now this one
12:33actually ranked worst on the entire list
12:35832 out of 835 possible degrees
12:39but there's one degree that i put as
12:42number one on the list is going to be
12:46therapy okay guys um
12:49i i'm i'm getting a headache give me a
12:51moment give me a moment
12:54five minutes later this is where the
12:57you know follow your passions thing that
13:00you hear everyone say this is where it
13:07just how how stupid that is sure this
13:10would be a cool class for you to take if
13:12you need to fill up your schedule
13:14if you're really passionate about it you
13:15could maybe even minor in it and take a
13:17bunch of different classes
13:18but why would anyone major in this one
13:22everyone knows that doing things that
13:23are fun and things that you're
13:24passionate about is going to be good for
13:27and in that sense it's a good form of
13:28therapy i guess you could call it but
13:30you could call just about anything
13:32if you really enjoy doing something you
13:34should do it more often
13:35why does anyone need to go to four years
13:39in order to learn how to do this even if
13:41you want to teach people how to have fun
13:42as therapy like you want to be a life
13:44coach or something you don't need to go
13:46there's just not that much of a demand
13:48out there for you to justify that much
