00:00the highest paying math degrees that's
00:02what we're going to be talking about
00:03today but before we jump into that let's
00:06gently tap the like button in order to
00:07defeat the evil youtube algorithm on
00:09this channel we talk about personal
00:11finance college degrees careers and
00:13opportunities that will lead you to
00:14success and we also go over how you can
00:17common traps that so many people fall
00:20for if you're new here and that sounds
00:21like something that interests you
00:22go ahead hit the subscribe button and
00:24ring the notification bell if you
00:26haven't done it already now with that
00:28let's jump right into it today we're
00:30going to be talking about the highest
00:32math or mathematics related degrees and
00:36now i've already made several videos
00:37talking about the best and the worst
00:38math degrees where i go over
00:40all kinds of different factors from job
00:42satisfaction to salary to future growth
00:45and all kinds of things like that
00:47that's not what this video is going to
00:48be about today today we are going to be
00:52salary we're going to be talking about
00:53the degrees that have the highest
00:55salary or in other words the degrees
00:57that will lead to careers and jobs that
01:00paying so let's talk about the first one
01:03on the list number 10 is going to be a
01:06mathematics degree now mathematics
01:08degrees compared to a lot of the other
01:10ones we're going to be talking about
01:11today are going to be a little bit more
01:13theoretical and pure so it's basically
01:15like pure mathematics this is different
01:17than something like physics or
01:19engineering which would be more on the
01:20side of being applied
01:22mathematics now with the math degree you
01:24can expect to make around 59 000
01:26a year in the first five years after
01:28graduating from college and then after
01:3010 years also known as mid-career pay
01:32you can expect to make a hundred and
01:34three thousand dollars a year now
01:36there's a ton of different jobs you
01:37could go into one of them would be a
01:39research analyst and they make around 84
01:43a year there's 105 000 jobs available
01:45it's growing at a ridiculous
01:4725 which is much faster than average
01:50that means during the next 10 years
01:52there's going to be 26
01:54000 new jobs that pop up now you might
01:56be thinking to yourself
01:57operations research analyst what does
01:59that have to do with mathematics and
02:01is the problem with math-related degrees
02:05is very valuable to learn but the
02:07problem with a pure mathematics degree
02:09is it's just a little bit too
02:10theoretical it can be a little hard to
02:12apply it to the real world as opposed to
02:14a more practical degree like
02:16engineering that's why you might have a
02:18little bit of a problem getting your
02:20right after you graduate from college so
02:22you probably want to get some internship
02:23experience or some on-the-job experience
02:25while you're in college
02:27but overall there are a ton of jobs out
02:28there for math majors and to be honest
02:30with you it's one of the most respected
02:33i would still recommend starting with
02:35the end in mind making sure that you
02:36know the exact career that you're going
02:39and then reverse engineering exactly how
02:41you're going to get there taking some
02:42statistics classes or programming
02:44classes might be a good idea just
02:45because of the fact that they're a
02:46little bit more practical and easier to
02:48apply to the real world
02:50a lot of math majors and honestly just
02:52math related degrees in general will end
02:54up working in the technology industry as
02:56computer programmers or software
02:58engineers and that's honestly not such a
03:00bad thing because the tech industry has
03:01a ton of opportunity
03:03next one on the list number nine is
03:05going to be a statistics degree
03:07so statistics is all about collecting
03:09lots of data from the real world
03:11and analyzing that data usually in a
03:15and figuring out how you can take a
03:17small proportion of the data and
03:18extrapolate that out to the wider
03:20population you can then use the
03:22conclusions that you reach from that
03:24very important decisions in real life
03:27this one has a lot of overlap with
03:28mathematics but it is a little bit more
03:30practical now with a statistics degree
03:32you can expect to make around 63
03:34000 a year in the first five years and
03:36then 114 000 in mid-career pay now you
03:39could go down the path of becoming a
03:42and you'd be making around 92 000 a year
03:46000 jobs available and it's growing
03:49which means there's going to be about 15
03:51000 jobs popping up in the next 10 years
03:53however unfortunately you're also going
03:55to need to get a master's degree in most
03:58circumstances but it's okay because
04:00there are a ton of other career paths
04:02that you can go down with a statistics
04:04degree you could become a data analyst
04:06and work in the financial sector you can
04:08become a software engineer you can start
04:10working with information and data
04:12number eight on the list is going to be
04:14a physics degree now physics is going to
04:16be the science and the study of the
04:18matter as well as energy there's going
04:20to be a ton of mathematics involved and
04:22it's going to be more applied type
04:24mathematics so it's a little bit more
04:26practical with a physics degree you can
04:28expect to make around 62 thousand
04:29dollars a year in your first five years
04:31after graduating and 113 000 in
04:34now if your goal is to become a
04:36physicist that's definitely one path you
04:38they make around 122 000 a year there's
04:4120 000 jobs available it's growing at
04:43seven percent which means there's going
04:45000 new jobs popping up in the next 10
04:49one big problem here is you likely will
04:51have to get a graduate level degree like
04:53a doctorate or a professional degree but
04:56a ton of other paths that physics majors
04:59a lot of them will end up working in the
05:00technology industry just like a lot of
05:02the other math degrees
05:03and overall physics is just a highly
05:06highly respected degree
05:07companies know that if somebody is able
05:09to graduate with a physics degree
05:10they're pretty much like a borderline
05:13and so even if you don't know the exact
05:15skills that they want you to know
05:17they'll hire you just based off of your
05:18brain power alone this is actually a
05:20very common practice with hiring
05:22managers in the financial industry for
05:24a lot of companies have the philosophy
05:26that they'll just hire the smartest
05:29and then later on they'll teach them
05:30whatever skills that they want them to
05:32know so physics majors get hired all the
05:34time in finance technology
05:36different companies will hire them for
05:37like business related careers that
05:39involve some mathematics
05:40it might be a little bit difficult for
05:42you to get your first job right out of
05:44college especially if you haven't done
05:45your research and your due diligence
05:47but once you get your first job you get
05:49a few years under your belt it should be
05:50very easy for you to get mini jobs
05:52after that number seven on the list is
05:56mathematics now this is what i was
05:58talking about before it's basically
06:00exactly what it sounds like it's
06:02mathematics but it's applied to
06:04real life problems real world problems
06:06so it's a lot more practical than some
06:09theoretical type mathematics that you
06:11might study in university now this is
06:13also a very rare degree not that many
06:15people graduate every year with an
06:17and so that might be throwing off the
06:19statistics just a little bit so keep
06:21that in mind with this degree you can
06:22expect to earn around 64 000
06:24a year starting off and mid-career pay
06:26is a hundred and fifteen thousand a year
06:28now there are so many different
06:30you can go for involving mathematics as
06:34and so bls for instance shows the
06:36average of all these different
06:37mathematical or computer related careers
06:40and they show that there is a very very
06:43set of numbers here so there's like 4.3
06:46million jobs available and the mean
06:4891 000 a year that's like twice what the
06:51average american makes in a year so uh
06:53that's pretty good you could work in the
06:55finance industry you could become an
06:57actuary you can go into programming you
06:59can work in business
07:01next one on the list number six is going
07:03to be computer science
07:05and overall just technology related
07:08now i could have put other technology
07:09related degrees on this list but i
07:11basically just wanted to keep it really
07:12simple computer science and some of the
07:14other technology related degrees
07:16are going to have quite a bit of math in
07:17them so i decided to add it to this list
07:19and at the end of the day they're going
07:20to be competing for a lot of the same
07:23it makes sense but computer science for
07:25instance you're going to start off
07:26making around 70 000
07:28a year and mid-career pay is going to be
07:30a hundred and sixteen thousand
07:31you could become a software developer
07:33for instance they make around 107 000 a
07:36year there's 1.4 million jobs available
07:40which is insane that means over the next
07:4310 years there's going to be
07:44316 000 jobs that pop up now computer
07:48science is one of my highest rated
07:50degrees it's definitely one of the best
07:51degrees out there there's so many
07:53different career paths you can go down
07:54there's lots of opportunity in the
07:56technology industry technology software
07:59automation is pretty much disrupting
08:01every single industry out there so you
08:03can pretty much work for whatever
08:05business or whatever industry you want
08:07you can also combine your computer
08:08science degree with all kinds of other
08:10types of skills for instance computer
08:12science would go amazingly well with a
08:14finance degree or an accounting degree
08:16it's just a fantastic degree overall i
08:18made an entire video on it because i
08:20thought it's one of the best
08:21number five on the list is going to be
08:23economics and mathematics so this is two
08:26different degrees combined either in a
08:28double major or a combined major
08:30and so basically this one is going to be
08:31economics you'll be studying the economy
08:33and how money flows through a nation
08:35but it's also going to be combined with
08:37pure mathematical technical skill so a
08:40lot of the time economics doesn't have
08:41quite as much of the mathematical skill
08:43that you're going to need in the real
08:44world for a lot of the jobs out there so
08:46combining these two is going to be
08:48great so with this combo you can expect
08:50to make around 65 000
08:52a year starting out and 121 000 in
08:54mid-career pay now one career path you
08:56could go down is you could become an
08:58economist for instance and they're going
09:01000 a year there's 20 000 jobs available
09:04it's growing really fast at 14
09:06which means there's about 3 000 jobs
09:08popping up in the next 10 years
09:10unfortunately to become an economist
09:12you'll likely have to get a master's
09:14however there are a ton of other options
09:16out there for you you can go into
09:18finance for instance especially with the
09:19math skill that you have from your math
09:22you can go into some of the more math
09:24heavy types of business related careers
09:26data analysis or supply chain management
09:29you could also become a software
09:30developer and use your economics and
09:32mathematics skills to help you with that
09:34there's a ton of options here and i'm
09:36not surprised at all that this one made
09:37it so high on the list the next one is
09:39actually extremely similar and that's
09:41going to be quantitative economics
09:43or econometrics so this one is going to
09:45be economics mixed with math but it's
09:47going to have much more of an emphasis
09:49on the statistics side of things
09:51so with this one you can expect to make
09:53around sixty thousand dollars a year
09:54starting out and then a hundred and
09:56twenty three thousand dollars a year in
09:59there's a ton of different career paths
10:00you could go down with this one as well
10:01one of them would be a financial manager
10:04they make around 129 000 a year there's
10:07697 000 jobs available
10:09it's growing at 15 which means in the
10:11next 10 years there's gonna be a hundred
10:13and eight thousand jobs that pop
10:15up that is amazing so basically all the
10:17jobs that i just talked about with the
10:19options for you here again economics is
10:22pretty good on its own but you want to
10:24make sure that you also beef that up
10:25with some math related skills maybe even
10:27some programming related skills as well
10:30number three on the list is going to be
10:33aerospace studies this is going to be
10:35one of the few degrees that is the
10:37exception to the rule that i told you
10:39guys where you don't pursue anything
10:41that has the word studies in it
10:42and this is basically the major that you
10:44would pursue if you want to be a rocket
10:47so aerospace studies you can expect to
10:49make around fifty thousand dollars a
10:51year starting out and mid-career pay is
10:53a hundred and thirty thousand now this
10:54is one of these careers where you gotta
10:56be careful because you might be
10:57pigeonholing yourself just a little bit
10:59you're literally going to be trying to
11:01become like a rocket scientist so you
11:03might end up working for like
11:04elon musk with spacex or nasa or maybe
11:07jeff bezos with blue origin
11:10and there's not that many rocket
11:11scientists out there so
11:13the closest career that i could find to
11:14what you would be doing would be
11:16aerospace engineering aerospace
11:18engineers make around a hundred and
11:19sixteen thousand dollars a year there's
11:21sixty six thousand jobs available it's
11:23growing at three percent which means
11:25there's going to be about two thousand
11:26jobs that pop up in the next 10 years
11:28next one on the list is going to be
11:30actuarial science or actuarial
11:33now this one you're going to be using
11:35mathematical and statistical methods
11:37to assess risk usually in the finance
11:40industry now with this degree you can
11:42expect to make around sixty one thousand
11:44starting out and then mid-career pay is
11:46going to be around a hundred and thirty
11:48according to bls actuaries make on
11:50average about a hundred and eight
11:52thousand dollars a year there's twenty
11:54seven thousand jobs available
11:55and it's growing at 18 which is
11:57fantastic meaning there's about 5 000
11:59jobs popping up in the next 10 years
12:02now with this one it has the problem of
12:04kind of pigeonholing you just a little
12:06you only want to major in actuarial
12:09100 sure that you want to be an actuary
12:13the reason for this is because you could
12:14probably just major in like mathematics
12:16or something like that
12:17and then just take some extra actuary
12:19classes and some extra statistics
12:21and also become an actuary whereas it
12:23doesn't necessarily work the other way
12:26but overall this is a very practical one
12:27there's not that many people who
12:29graduate with a degree so that could be
12:30kind of throwing off the statistics just
12:33but number one on this list is going to
12:35be petroleum engineering
12:38slash all kinds of different engineering
12:41so there are a ton of different
12:42engineering related degrees out there
12:44and they tend to pay extremely well now
12:46the highest paying out of all of them is
12:48going to be petroleum engineering so
12:50this one is going to be all about taking
12:51oil from the earth crude oil and it's
12:53going to go all the way through the
12:54process where people can actually put it
12:56in their gas tank there's actually a lot
12:58of math related to that you'd think
13:00there wasn't but there's actually a lot
13:02and that's why they have a specific
13:06petroleum engineering and that's why i
13:07put it on this list because engineering
13:10is going to have quite a bit of math in
13:11it now with this degree you can expect
13:14whopping 92 000 a year right after
13:17graduating and then mid-career pay is an
13:21182 000. according to bls petroleum
13:24engineers make 137 000 a year
13:27there's 33 000 jobs available and it's
13:29growing at 3 percent which is on the
13:30lower side of being as fast as average
13:33that means over the next 10 years
13:34there's going to be about 1100 jobs that
13:36open up now there's a lot to be said
13:38about this one to be honest
13:39many people think that this is going to
13:41be a dying industry it's going to be
13:42going away within the next 10
13:4420 years it's also very volatile and
13:48any career that's within the energy
13:49industry is going to be pretty volatile
13:51and what i mean by that is a war a
13:55some kind of new law some kind of new
13:57regulation all of these different types
13:59of things could end up completely
14:02changing the industry and thousands and
14:04thousands of people could lose their
14:05jobs this actually happened in 2014 when
14:08the prices of oil dropped and they had
14:10thousands of people with that being said
14:12on the other side of things there's lots
14:14of baby boomers who've been working in
14:16this industry for decades that are going
14:18soon and that means a lot of jobs are
14:20going to open up as well now i've done a
14:21ton of research on this trying to figure
14:23out how valid these claims are
14:25and in my personal opinion i don't think
14:27this is going to be going away in the
14:30again i'm not saying whether this is a
14:31good thing or a bad thing but i just
14:33don't think that we're anywhere near
14:35being able to get to a point where we
14:36don't need to use natural gases
14:38just want to remind everybody there's a
14:40super exciting project that i've been
14:42working on it's gonna be in the
14:44description below and basically i
14:46am ranking most of the common degrees
14:48that people ask about all the time on
14:51it's been this project that i've been
14:52working on for months i even brought
14:53someone on i hired someone to help me
14:55with it because it was such a big
14:57project and i wanted to do it the right
14:59and basically it's going to be the most
15:01accurate ranking of different college
15:04ever been created as of the recording of
15:06this video it's in version 1.1 and you
15:08can check that out down in the
