00:00the best double majors for social
00:03that's what we're going to be talking
00:04about today and this was a highly
00:06requested topic for me to do these
00:07double major videos but before we get
00:09into that make sure to gently tap the
00:11like button in order to defeat the evil
00:13on this channel we talk about personal
00:14finance college degrees careers and
00:16opportunities that are going to lead you
00:17to success and we also go over some of
00:19the common financial mistakes that so
00:21many people fall for
00:22if that sounds like something that
00:23interests you and you haven't done it
00:26of people who view my channel without
00:27subscribing then please go ahead and hit
00:30button and then ring the notification
00:31bell so that you never miss out and with
00:34let's jump right into it social science
00:36degrees don't have the best reputation
00:39i've gone over this in other videos
00:40there's some that are better than others
00:43but when it comes to personal finance
00:44when it comes to actually getting a job
00:47sometimes it can be a little bit
00:48difficult so a lot of these subjects in
00:50social science are extremely interesting
00:52and i think they add a lot of value to
00:54the world but for some reason
00:55unfortunately with the way that things
00:56are set up a lot of the time it's very
00:58difficult to get a job with a social
01:01this is why you see pretty high
01:02unemployment rates with people who
01:04graduate with social science degrees and
01:05then a lot of the time the jobs that
01:07they do end up getting
01:08aren't going to be the highest paying
01:09but with that being said that's why this
01:11channel exists if you do still want to
01:13go for a social science degree after
01:14doing your research and watching my
01:16just make sure that you're being very
01:18careful most of the time you're not
01:19going to be able to just get the degree
01:21and then expect people to be lining up
01:22outside of your door
01:23offering you a job and if you're going
01:25to go 40 000 in debt in order to learn
01:27this stuff you want to make sure that
01:30afterwards so that you can pay that debt
01:31off now with that being said
01:33number one on the list is going to be a
01:35social science degree plus a
01:36business degree now an example of this
01:38one would be an economics degree and a
01:40finance degree with an economics degree
01:42you would expect to make around 58 000 a
01:44year starting out and 109
01:46000 in mid-career pay and a finance
01:48degree you would expect to make around
01:4956 000 a year starting out and 99 000 in
01:52mid-career pay now one career path you
01:54could go down is you could become an
01:55economist and they make around 105
01:57000 a year there's 20 000 jobs available
02:00and it's growing at 14
02:01which is much faster than average
02:02however a lot of the time you're gonna
02:04have to get a master's degree in order
02:07and this is a common theme that you see
02:08over and over again when it comes to the
02:09social science degrees
02:11a lot of the careers that look really
02:12good you have to get a master's or a
02:14doctorate in order to be considered for
02:16and even if you do have a master's or a
02:17doctorate with some of them it still can
02:19be very difficult for you to get a job
02:22really good plan and you knew exactly
02:23what you had to do in order to get it so
02:25for example one test that i like doing
02:27is typing in the degree name onto either
02:29monster.com or indeed.com
02:31this will search all of the different
02:32listings for keywords that you type into
02:34the search bar so for instance when you
02:36sociology degree only around 2 400 jobs
02:40up however when you type in marketing
02:42degree around 271 000 jobs pop
02:45up now this isn't a perfect test of
02:46course but it kind of shows you that
02:48there's a lot more demand there's a lot
02:50advertising for marketing degree
02:52graduates rather than sociology degree
02:54grads so i definitely understand if a
02:56lot of you like these social science
02:58degrees i took extra classes and all
02:59kinds of different social science
03:01however a lot of the time when it comes
03:03to actually being able to get a job
03:04you're probably going to have to go
03:06an extra mile and do a lot more so for
03:08instance to make yourself a little bit
03:09more marketable to business owners and
03:11hiring managers it might be a good idea
03:13for you to mix your sociology degree
03:14with a marketing degree the next one on
03:16the list we're going to be talking about
03:17is going to be social science degrees
03:19mixed with math degrees so i think a
03:21great example here would be political
03:22science mixed with statistics
03:24with the poli-sci degree you would
03:26expect to make around 47 000
03:28a year starting out in 89 000 in
03:30mid-career pay whereas with a statistics
03:32degree you'd make around 63 000 a year
03:36000 in mid-career pay and i think this
03:37is a combination that would make a lot
03:39of sense just because of the fact that
03:40if you're someone who's trying to go
03:41into government and understand policy
03:43it's probably a good idea that you
03:45understand statistics as well so one
03:47career path you might go down is
03:48becoming a political scientist and they
03:52000 a year and there's 7 000 jobs
03:53available and it's growing at around 6
03:55which is faster than average however
03:57again you're generally speaking going to
03:59have to get a master's degree now one
04:01thing i always like to look at is how
04:02much students tend to regret getting
04:05now in doing research for this video a
04:07lot of people who get social science
04:09express quite a bit of regret so for
04:11instance when you look at
04:12ziprecruiter.com they did a survey where
04:14they asked people if they regret getting
04:16and the least regretted type of degree
04:18was a math degree at only about 12.78
04:22and the reason for that regret was
04:23because it's extremely stressful however
04:25most type of regretted degree was a
04:27social science degree and that was 29
04:30and the reason was because it's too
04:32general impractical and hard to find a
04:34job without further studies so in many
04:36cases i think learning mathematics along
04:38with your social science degree would be
04:40a pretty good combination the hard
04:42skills from the math would complement
04:43the soft skills that you'd get from
04:45learning a social science degree like
04:47and formulating an argument and giving
04:49speeches next one on the list would be a
04:51social science degree plus an
04:53engineering degree so an example of this
04:55one would be economics mixed with
04:56industrial engineering with an economics
04:58degree you would expect to make around
05:01starting out in 109 000 in mid-career
05:03pay whereas with an industrial
05:05engineering degree you'd make 68 000 a
05:07year starting out and 111
05:08000 in mid-career pay if you became an
05:10industrial engineer you'd make around 88
05:13a year there's 295 000 jobs available
05:16and it's growing at 10
05:17which is faster than average now to be
05:19honest with you this is the combination
05:20that makes the least sense for
05:22quite a few different reasons for one it
05:24just doesn't seem like there's that many
05:25degrees that would work synergistically
05:27together and for two engineering degrees
05:29are already extremely hard on their own
05:31and so if you tacked on a bunch of extra
05:33social science degree classes that would
05:35probably overload you now according to
05:37the last census the average person who
05:39graduates with a college degree makes
05:41around 2.4 million dollars
05:43over a lifetime engineering degree grads
05:45on average make around 3.5 million over
05:48and social science degree grads make
05:50around 2.5 million and the cool thing
05:52about an engineering degree is it pretty
05:53much doesn't matter what career path you
05:55end up going down you still end up
05:57making quite a bit more than just about
06:00so for instance engineers that end up
06:01working in arts or media make three
06:03million dollars over a lifetime
06:05and engineers that end up working in
06:06community service or legal
06:08they make around 3.2 million over a
06:10lifetime i think this is for several
06:13one is that engineering degrees tend to
06:14be really well respected so you're
06:16likely to get hired pretty much no
06:17matter what type of job you apply for
06:19business owners and hiring managers kind
06:21of know what they're getting with an
06:22engineer they're going to be getting
06:23someone who's extremely smart and also
06:26on top of that engineering does teach
06:28you quite a few practical skills that
06:29you can use in real life whether you end
06:31up going into the corporate world
06:33whether you end up starting your own
06:34so if you do your research and you find
06:36a great combination of a social science
06:38degree and an engineering degree it
06:39could be really good but chances are i'd
06:42of the time that's not going to happen
06:43next one on the list is going to be a
06:45social science degree plus a technology
06:47degree now this one i was a little bit
06:49surprised on there are quite a few
06:51different examples of technology and
06:53social science degrees that are either
06:54double majors or dual majors so for
06:56instance one example is you might get a
06:58sociology degree and an information
07:00systems degree with sociology you'd make
07:0243 000 a year starting out in 68 000 in
07:05mid-career pay and with is you'd make 59
07:08000 starting out and 101 000 in
07:10mid-career pay now this combination
07:11makes a lot of sense to me because of
07:13the fact that they are trying to make
07:14technology as automated as possible and
07:17one great way to automate it is to
07:18understand human behavior on a
07:20widespread level and that's what
07:21sociology is all about
07:23one really interesting skill that's
07:24really blowing up right now is data
07:26science or information
07:27science and that's all about seeing what
07:29behaviors humans have when they're
07:31interacting with technology and then
07:33basically trying to predict their future
07:35behavior so for instance someone might
07:36be a huge fan of micro pigs and they're
07:38probably 100 times more likely to buy a
07:41shirt that has a picture of a micro
07:42micropig on it or maybe
07:44a mug that's a really simple example but
07:46data has actually surpassed oil as being
07:49valuable resource and that's why there's
07:50so much controversy over all these big
07:52tech companies taking your data and then
07:54selling it to third party companies but
07:56that's a subject for a completely
07:57different video with that being said one
07:59career path you might go down is
08:00becoming a computer and information
08:02research scientists and they make around
08:05000 a year there's 32 000 jobs available
08:07and it's growing at 15
08:08which is much faster than average but
08:10you're generally going to have to get
08:12a master's level degree next one on the
08:14list is going to be a social science
08:15degree mixed with another social science
08:17degree so an example here would be
08:19economics and political science
08:21with an economics degree you would
08:22expect to make around 58 000 a year
08:24starting out and 109 000 in mid-career
08:27pay with a poli sci degree you'd make 47
08:29000 a year starting out in 89 000 in
08:31mid-career pay one career path you might
08:33go down i already mentioned this one but
08:35it's a political scientist and they make
08:36really good money around 122 000 a year
08:39and i think it's probably pretty
08:40important that politicians understand
08:42now when it comes to social science
08:44degrees they do get bagged on quite a
08:46all over the internet and i'm not one of
08:48those people who wants to jump on the
08:49bandwagon making fun of social science
08:51degrees i'm just somebody who tries to
08:54the facts i will say that there are a
08:55few strengths when it comes to social
08:57science degrees and i think the first
08:58one that i want to talk about
09:00is they do teach you quite a bit of soft
09:02skills these are skills like giving
09:05communication formulating an argument
09:07and critical thinking now unfortunately
09:08the market doesn't value social science
09:10degrees very much and by that i mean
09:12there are more people who graduate with
09:14these degrees than there are positions
09:15to fill up however just because they
09:18profitable that doesn't mean they're not
09:19going to indirectly help you make money
09:21and just be successful in life in
09:23general i think that studying history
09:25for instance has helped me to gain the
09:26success that i've already gained up to
09:28this point which isn't that much but
09:30it's you know something and of course it
09:31didn't directly help me but it
09:33indirectly helped me because i learned
09:35from the mistakes of the past
09:36now that being said another strength
09:38when it comes to social science degrees
09:40and the careers that they tend to lead
09:42is that they're probably not going to be
09:43automated political scientists for
09:45instance only have around a four percent
09:47chance of being automated so if you are
09:48able to make a really good plan
09:50set out a goal and figure out the steps
09:51you need to take in order to reach your
09:53goal and then you're able to get your
09:54first few years of experience get your
09:56foot in the door and find yourself a
09:58then it can work out really well for you
10:00however with these types of degrees you
10:02really want to make sure that you do
10:03your due diligence because a lot of
10:05people end up getting a social science
10:07thinking they can get a job and then
10:09they end up having to go back to grad
10:11take out lots of loans spends lots of
10:12time in order to get a master's or a
10:14doctorate and then sometimes even with a
10:16master's or a doctorate they're not
10:17going to be working in the field that
10:19they thought they were going to be
10:20working in now with that being said
10:21number six on this list is going to be a
10:23social science degree plus a more
10:25practical degree so an example here
10:27would be psychology and statistics with
10:29a psychology degree you would expect to
10:32a year starting out and 70 000 in
10:34mid-career pay and with a statistics
10:36degree you'd make 63 000 starting out
10:38and 114 000 mid career one career path
10:41you might go down as becoming an
10:42industrial or an organizational
10:44psychologist and they make pretty good
10:47000 a year although there aren't that
10:49many jobs out there i think mixing a
10:51statistics degree with a psychology
10:53degree would make you look quite a bit
10:54better and it would help you to secure a
10:57psychology of course is going to involve
10:58quite a bit of statistics and if you
11:01understanding of that it would help you
11:02out another thing that you might want to
11:05minoring in your social science degree
11:07i've talked about this in other videos
11:08but there's a lot more people graduating
11:10with these types of degrees than there
11:12are jobs in order to fill it's all
11:14about supply and demand and
11:15unfortunately when you have a really bad
11:17ratio of supply and demand
11:18that's going to affect pretty much every
11:20area of the career so for instance if
11:22there's not that many careers out there
11:24for people who are graduating with a
11:26that means that the few careers out
11:28there that are left they're probably not
11:29going to be very good paying
11:31they're likely not going to treat you
11:32that well so your quality of life is
11:34going to be relatively low
11:35and on top of that if you have any issue
11:37with that there's probably a hundred
11:38other people who are lined up to take
11:40don't underestimate the power of supply
11:42and demand it's extremely powerful and
11:44you need to make sure that you
11:45understand this so what you could do
11:47instead is you could consider either
11:48minoring in it taking extra classes or
11:50just studying it on the side so for
11:52instance one of my favorite subjects is
11:54history and so what i did is i took
11:55extra classes in it and i basically just
11:59i think sometimes if you try to make
12:00your passions into a career when there's
12:03just no career opportunities out there
12:05you're going to end up kind of ruining
12:07so for instance i really like playing
12:09video games but if i had to play video
12:11games professionally and i had to just
12:12take it extremely seriously all the time
12:15i would probably lose my love for the
12:16game but of course that's extremely
12:18subjective and it's going to be
12:19different for everyone let's say you're
12:20really set on a history degree and you
12:22absolutely want to do
12:24history professionally you're going to
12:25want to probably find an alternative way
12:27to make money with it so you might want
12:29to start a podcast or a youtube channel
12:31or blog or something along those lines
12:33and figure out how you can make money as
12:35if you're just doing it for the
12:36knowledge some of the best universities
12:39offer completely free courses online
12:41like harvard university for instance now
12:43i've mentioned this before but i've been
12:44working on a really exciting project
12:46where i'm basically trying to rank
12:47all of the best degrees and put all the
12:49most important information that i found
12:52doing lots of research online into one
12:54table and you can find that down in the
12:56description below in my patreon i'm only
12:58going to be offering version 1.1 there
13:00for a limited amount of time so you can
13:02check it out right now and then in the
13:03future i'm also going to be putting
13:05other stuff on my patreon like my
13:07personal stock portfolio if you haven't
13:08done it already go ahead and
13:10gently tap the like button hit the
13:11subscribe button ring the notification
13:12bell comment down below any thoughts
13:14comments criticisms etc and share the
