00:00what's happening guys it's shane here
00:01and in today's video i'm gonna be
00:03interviewing orlando now orlando is an
00:06actor who lives in la and if you're not
00:08familiar with this profession acting is
00:10obviously a type of art and it's also
00:12very competitive it's hard to make a
00:14living as an actor so orlando was
00:16working odd jobs and he also worked as a
00:18waiter and he wanted to find a way for
00:20him to have some sort of steady income
00:22that he could rely on and he also wanted
00:24to find a job that was flexible enough
00:25that he could always do his acting
00:27related stuff on the side and on top of
00:29that he wanted to find a job that he
00:31could do remotely so he didn't have to
00:32spend three hours in traffic every day
00:34in la and so this is the story of how
00:36orlando discovered digital marketing and
00:38he was able to get into it without any
00:40experience at all and i think you're
00:42really going to enjoy this one whether
00:43you're an artist or you're really
00:44ambitious or you're just somebody who
00:46needs a really good career so that they
00:47can fund their dreams so let's jump
00:49right into it right after you gently tap
00:51that like button let's aim for 300 likes
00:53on this video and let's start right now
00:55hey guys welcome back to the channel
00:57today i have a very special guest
01:00orlando orlando is an actor and a
01:02digital marketer and he's going to share
01:05his story about how he got into digital
01:07marketing and this is going to be
01:08especially useful for all of my viewers
01:11out there who are artistic and want to
01:13do a career or some sort of freelance or
01:15start their own business in the arts so
01:18thank you so much orlando for coming on
01:20the channel yeah for sure um thanks for
01:21having me you know happy to be here and
01:23you know share my my experiences as a as
01:26an actor living in in los angeles and
01:28how i you know made the move to do
01:30digital uh marketing got it all right so
01:32let's go ahead and start at the very
01:34beginning uh before you even discovered
01:37uh digital marketing so you were working
01:39as an actor you also had some other uh
01:43side hustles you were doing and then you
01:44were i believe you were working as a
01:46waiter as well can you kind of walk us
01:48through that and the process of
01:50discovering digital marketing yeah for
01:53um you know my story as far as acting
01:55goes is not very um it's usually very
01:58common you know persons whether wherever
02:00they're from they get the idea that they
02:02want to move to hollywood or to la to
02:03pursue this thing called acting uh i was
02:05no different uh when i started you know
02:07i came um to the city in
02:12and you know i put all my resources into
02:14uh studying acting trying to first of
02:16all figure out what this acting thing
02:18was because you know i had no experience
02:20i didn't know um doing that you know i
02:22was able to you know get some jobs in
02:25television some indie films you know
02:27when i first started i first started
02:28doing short films um eventually you know
02:30made some progress did um get some roles
02:33in television which was amazing and you
02:35know other films uh made for tv movies
02:37as well i was doing what i what i could
02:39you know at the time um
02:41you know i think like uber came out and
02:42like lyft came out and then like
02:45um and i was doing all that you know
02:47trying to just to survive you know and
02:49it worked a little bit like i was able
02:50to survive a little bit but it was still
02:53not um not very fun as far as like i was
02:56working uh just to pay my bills barely
03:02work as uh it was like two restaurants
03:05but even working at those restaurants
03:07um but really famous restaurant a lot of
03:10celebrities um go there that kind of
03:12kind of posh when i got my check like
03:14the first month it was i think like 900
03:18and i was like whoa 900
03:20i just did all this like i came monday
03:22through friday did xyz like this is not
03:24even enough to cover my expenses like my
03:27rent alone i think was like 1100 bucks
03:31so even just that i'm like already
03:32negative like 200 and i still need to
03:34pay my car and buy food you know so like
03:37there's no way like this is not not okay
03:39um so i obviously had to pivot and do
03:41something else you know in doing that i
03:43would be on the internet i would see a
03:44lot of um you know the people talking
03:46about oh you can create an online
03:47business and you know these this is like
03:49facebook ads and ecom i keep hearing the
03:51word ecomecon so it interested me and i
03:54try to figure out like what's this thing
03:55called ecom and then it was like oh well
03:58deals with digital marketing it's about
03:59creating ads or sending ads on like you
04:02know facebook and i was really
04:04interested in that but i could never
04:05find a place or a person to say like
04:09this is how you do it like this is the
04:10abc right like this is uh for facebook
04:13that for facebook ads this is what you
04:15need to do for google this is how it
04:16works this is how how these things work
04:18and i could never find it was always
04:19open-ended you know now so i had did a
04:21little bit more investigating and then i
04:26uh that came up on facebook and it was
04:28uh seth uh seth's uh course on digital
04:32marketing and i was like okay was this
04:36one of those people telling you what
04:37they can do for the low price of you
04:39know i think they're like about my
04:40course 997 and you're gonna do x all
04:43this great stuff i got the course i paid
04:45for the course and then then i was like
04:47okay this is really helpful because this
04:49is kind of like what i was looking for i
04:51was looking for that person to give me
04:52the the abc you know like step one step
04:55two step three and that was says course
04:57and it was really great because not only
04:58did he cover things on like facebook but
05:00he covered things on facebook on seo on
05:03um google ads and pretty much everything
05:05to do with digital marketing and even
05:07like how to get a job how to present
05:09yourself i think it took me
05:11i remember like the exact month but
05:13maybe it took me like two or three weeks
05:14to finish the course or even a month but
05:16like after that month it might have been
05:19i don't know it feels like it could have
05:20either been like six to eight weeks that
05:22i got like my first actual digital
05:24marketing job for like a startup um
05:27startup agency oh wow so you so you took
05:30the course and from the day you started
05:32taking the course it was about six to
05:33eight weeks before you got your first
05:35job for sure yeah yeah and that that
05:38happened the reason that happened um was
05:41because going through that course it
05:43gave me like so much confidence as far
05:45as like applying and being able to speak
05:47the language um because i really
05:50understood how this works you know so by
05:52the way uh real quick side note seth
05:55does have a free digital marketing
05:57master class where he basically goes
05:59over some of the key stuff that you need
06:00to know if you think you're interested
06:02in digital marketing um and it's totally
06:04free uh i took it myself it's about
06:07three hours or so two three hours uh
06:09very informative and you can check that
06:11out i'll have that link down in the
06:12description as well as the pinned
06:14comments so yes it took about six week
06:17weeks to get to get my first job um and
06:20it was it was a starting position
06:22certain salary which i think was like 20
06:24an hour and it was on a contract basis
06:27and that was great because it gave me
06:29like hands-on experience on actually you
06:31know running these um google ad
06:32campaigns and they had me doing um i
06:35guess all around digital marketing which
06:36they had me doing like google facebook
06:40and it was a good segue into my
06:44into my current job uh which is um at a
06:48thompson reuters fine law which
06:50is a really large company and just being
06:52part of like you know thompson reuters
06:54company it's a global um
06:59that helped me secure this job that i
07:01have now which has allowed me to
07:04fund my life in la which has also
07:06allowed me to not have to really worry
07:09about where my next um
07:10paycheck is coming from or how am i
07:12going to pay the bills you know it's
07:13like it's a nine to five job but as long
07:15as you complete the 40 hours in the week
07:18um you know you're you're fine
07:21so it allows uh for a lot of flexibility
07:24which i like so it's it's above average
07:26salary and you don't really need like a
07:29a college degree you know all you really
07:32need is is to know the skill and
07:34be able to communicate with with clients
07:36you know and the skills you can learn uh
07:38on your own absolutely for sure so you
07:41were able to land the job without a
07:43college degree is that what you said
07:44land a job without a
07:46a university degree and it's great like
07:49i said oh it's such a weird thing like
07:52they preferred that i was google
07:54certified and being certified over like
07:57a bachelor's degree you know even though
07:59like postings say like oh we want
08:00somebody like with a bachelor's or
08:02master's or and uh then it says like we
08:04will it's a plus if you have google's or
08:07requires google certified and being
08:09certified i was like oh yeah i have that
08:11so that's what i go with
08:12or that's what i went with and um yeah
08:14the opportunities are are plentiful um
08:17so i i kind of wanted to touch on a few
08:19points so you kind of mentioned your
08:21very first job uh after uh getting out
08:25of the course you got that in about six
08:27and you made about 20 bucks an hour
08:29which is if i'm i'm doing the
08:31calculations in my head about 40 000 a
08:33year so that's really good for for
08:35landing your first job and i mean the
08:37way i think about it is it's almost like
08:39you're getting paid to learn
08:41right yeah so that's really good and
08:43then uh if you're comfortable you can
08:45talk about the salary you're getting
08:47paid uh at this the second job that you
08:49got if you're not comfortable it's
08:50totally fine uh you can maybe just talk
08:52about like generally what people could
08:54expect to be paid after working in
08:57digital marketing for one to two years
08:59whatever you're comfortable with yeah so
09:00so i had that job started at 20 an hour
09:02i was there for eight months or
09:04something like that before i got where
09:07i'm at right now the job where i'm at
09:08right now so when they they brought me
09:10on um to my current position they
09:13brought me on as a contractor um so i
09:16came on as a contractor and that the
09:18starting salary there was um 53 000 for
09:21the year per for annual salary um so i
09:24thought well that was really great
09:26because i went from 40 to 53 right so i
09:28have like 13k increase you know so and
09:30that was within a year and then when i
09:32was on the job they offered me a
09:34full-time position six months later so
09:36six months later after that it went from
09:43with bonus so that's another increase of
09:46like i don't know that was like 10 like
09:48another 12 000 uh 12 13k um with the
09:52bonus so within i don't know 18 months i
09:55was able to go from you know 40k to 70
09:58with 70 being like with the bonus what
10:00i'm currently making um i've been doing
10:02this a little over three years a lot of
10:04people that have been doing this over
10:06three years they can expect to be
10:07probably making a lot more uh between
10:10like 80 to even six figures depending on
10:13their position so yeah i mean six
10:14figures is very possible within a short
10:16period of time so that's also what i
10:18like about it the opportunities are
10:20there the jobs are there uh just a
10:22matter of you know learning the skills
10:24and putting in you know some of that um
10:27sweat equity as they say got it yeah and
10:30uh how would you say like seth's course
10:34um kind of was there a group dynamic
10:37like were were there other people you
10:39kind of uh talked with in the facebook
10:41group um did you know were the teachings
10:44really thorough did you did you go over
10:46the course once or twice can you kind of
10:48just give a little bit of an overview of
10:49how seth's course was yeah so his course
10:52um like i said it kind of it really
10:56um from what i got at the time was
10:58pretty much every component of um
11:00digital marketing whether it's facebook
11:02uh google or seo it kind of broke it
11:06down and give it simple it made it
11:08simple to understand what this digital
11:10marketing is and the technical side of
11:12how to create campaigns how to optimize
11:18kind of over your shoulder um
11:20you know type of deal like you know
11:22you're able to see like actual examples
11:24of like well if you have if this happens
11:27do this and this and this if this
11:29happens do this you know which are
11:30skills that you need uh to know before
11:32you actually get um campaigns like
11:34real-life campaigns my biggest takeaway
11:36was that it really gave me give me the
11:38confidence to one really understand um
11:40digital marketing as a whole and from
11:43there i was able to kind of well i
11:45segued into like running google ads and
11:48paid search you know um i do know his
11:50course does his teaches a lot about like
11:52seo so like for people that want to do
11:54seo maybe you don't even like
11:56paid search or you don't want to deal
11:57with it there's like you know the seo
11:59components pretty informative too as
12:01well as the facebook ads you know for me
12:03my personal story was just like i just
12:05segued into you know paid search so i
12:07know you touched on this a little bit
12:09but could you maybe go over a little bit
12:11more about the job satisfaction and kind
12:14of the flexibility of digital marketing
12:16um because i know there are a lot of
12:20and i actually experienced this myself
12:23where you know you go to the job you do
12:25your eight hours and then when you get
12:27off after your eight hours you are just
12:29totally drained right you just you don't
12:31have any battery life left uh it's
12:33pretty much impossible for you to pursue
12:36any side hustles or any external goals
12:38outside of that you kind of just want to
12:39go home and watch netflix right so uh
12:42digital marketing can you kind of talk
12:44about uh the the job satisfaction the
12:47flexibility and if it allows you to
12:49pursue your external goals uh while
12:52you're doing it yeah for sure um that's
12:54one of the great things that that i
12:55loved about digital marketing because a
12:58lot of these jobs are remote you work
13:01so one thing i will will speak on is
13:04working from home obviously means
13:06working from home so you don't have to
13:08travel or go to the office uh los
13:11angeles specifically in the mornings are
13:13crazy the flexibility that digital
13:16offers me in my case specifically is
13:19that i have created my schedule around
13:22my endeavors right meaning
13:25i know okay i'm working from you know
13:28nine in the morning to 5 p.m or i'm
13:30doing like 8 30 to 4 30. um in general
13:32it's eight hours so i know for a fact
13:33i'm working eight hours i'm not doing no
13:35hard labor i'm not working out in the
13:38um if i have to go somewhere i'm able to
13:41go on my own free will you know that the
13:43people i work with are really great my
13:47i've always had the the my managers and
13:49the seniors and the people that that um
13:51a little you know a little bit higher up
13:54they're really great and they're really
13:55helpful and they understand like you
13:57know your job is your job we don't want
13:59this to like uh stress you out like we
14:01just want you to you know come here do
14:02your work if you need to go somewhere uh
14:05go ahead and do that but you know just
14:07come back finish your work and that's it
14:08you know there's not a lot of stress um
14:11case in point i think might have been
14:13last month i think i had like an
14:14audition for a commercial uh and it was
14:16like at 11 30 a.m um and just like when
14:20you have these types of meetings with
14:21with um auditions it's it's um
14:24it's really hard to change the schedules
14:25you know so you almost have to like say
14:27you're gonna go or just decline um you
14:30don't want to decline for like obvious
14:32reasons because well you don't even give
14:36if you confirm that you're expected that
14:37you're going to go so normal job
14:39anywhere else i would be if that would
14:41happen um i wouldn't be able to go i'd
14:43have to decline so that would you know
14:45obviously um put it you know damper in
14:49person because it's like well i'm going
14:50to feel really bad like oh wow i
14:51couldn't i couldn't go there because i'm
14:53doing this job and when that happens it
14:55for at least for me and my mind it's
14:57like well well now i'm kind of like
14:59giving up my dream you know to a degree
15:01because like well now you have this job
15:02what are you gonna do like you have to
15:04choose between art and commerce and and
15:06um you can choose art but then like if
15:08you're not making a lot of money um you
15:10know like i said before it's going to be
15:12really really hard to survive um so now
15:14with this job it's allowed me to choose
15:16i'm able to have both you know if i need
15:18to go i can i can go
15:20so that's kind of like the flexibility
15:22that digital marketing offers
15:24and which is why i thought it was like a
15:27you know huge blessing that you know i
15:29got into this field and
15:31it allows me to do these kinds of things
15:32you know which which makes me happy
15:34because i can still pursue what i'm
15:36doing and and still have a decent income
15:39um actually a professional salary you
15:41know and there's room to grow awesome
15:43well i think we covered everything uh
15:46thanks for sharing your story thanks for
15:47coming on the channel i think a lot of
15:49people especially uh people who are
15:51artistic i get so many questions from
15:54want to pursue artistic endeavors and
15:57you know typically the advice that i
15:58give them is you know learn a valuable
16:02and then pursue your artistic endeavors
16:05either on the side or there are a few
16:07skills that are are somewhat artistic
16:09that you can get a job with as well but
16:11that's usually the advice that i give
16:12them that gives them uh you know
16:14stability and the chance to kind of
16:16launch their freelance business or their
16:18entrepreneurial uh endeavors and uh yeah
16:22so that's basically exactly what you're
16:25um i think that you're you're definitely
16:27on the right track there uh and i think
16:29that you're gonna inspire a lot of
16:31people on my channel so thank you so
16:32much for coming on i really appreciate
16:34it orlando yeah for sure no problem and
16:36you're spot on um you know with learning
16:39a skill and and um and pursuing pursuing
16:41your artistic uh endeavor so
16:44yeah for anybody i would say for anybody
16:46who who's feels after struggling if
16:48you're an artist um whether it's music
16:51whatever it is that you do
16:53um there is hope uh just
16:56you know put a little bit of work in it
16:57and i mean you'll you'll be good you
16:59know nothing to worry about nothing to
17:02um just get out there you know do your
17:04thing and don't uh give up on your dream
17:07and continue to grind but grind in the
17:10right way you know to where you have an
17:12actual income so by the way uh if you're
17:14interested in learning more about seth
17:17because seth is the guy who actually
17:18created uh the digital marketing course
17:21he's the one who's trained literally
17:23thousands of people he's got thousands
17:25of reviews over his you know on his
17:27facebook group instagram and youtube
17:30you can check out the interview that we
17:31did i'll put it i think right here i
17:34always get confused about that yeah i
17:35think i'll put it up here in the top
17:37right corner uh so you can just click on
17:40that and that'll be a link to the
17:41interview to his video
